National Charity League Canyon Chapter Mother Daughter Recognition Tea at the dove canyon country club

The NCL, Inc. Canyon Chapter accomplishments during the past

celebrated their annual Mother six years with a photo montage and Daughter Recognition Tea on May rose ceremony. This year, Canyon 4, 2014 at the Dove Canyon Golf Chapter has raised over $57,500 for Club. The tea was held in the their charities through raffle donations ballroom overlooking the scenic golf for gift baskets and centerpieces course. Over 240 Patronesses and during the tea and their 5th Annual Ticktockers enjoyed the â&#x20AC;&#x153;A Passion NCL, Inc. Canyon Chapter Home for Fashionâ&#x20AC;? theme and came dressed Tour. runway ready in their best fashion couture. The ladies enjoyed a lovely lunch of southwestern chicken salad and buffalo chicken wraps provided by the club chefs. Many Ticktockers were recognized at the tea for going above and beyond the required philanthropy service hours. During the last year, the Canyon Chapter volunteered an aggregate of 8,769 philanthropy hours to support sixteen local charities. The tea ended on a high note as the senior mothers

Public can attend meeting and participate in online survey to give input on county’s bikeway connectivity. The Orange County Transportation Authority is holding a bikeways roundtable in District 5 to seek public input and plan for the county’s transportation needs. The roundtable is set for 5:307:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 28 at the Laguna Hills Community Center, Heritage Room C, 25555 Alicia Pkwy, Laguna Hills, CA 92653. The public can join OCTA, Orange County Council of Governments, Caltrans, County of Orange and other participating agencies for a

discussion on efforts to improve regional connectivity for bicycling in southern Orange County. Participating agencies in attendance will include: Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and the Transportation Corridor Agencies. During the meeting the public will be able to give feedback and provide comments in regards to bikeway connectivity projects. Community members are encouraged to participate in an

online survey. The survey asks for public input so OCTA can better understand bicycle transportation in south Orange County. The district 5 roundtable is part of the Regional Bikeways Planning which is a countywide effort involving OCTA, the Orange County Council of Governments, local jurisdictions and bicycle stakeholders. The goals of the effort are to build consensus on key bikeways corridors and to assist local jurisdictions with project development. local HIGH SCHOOLS RANK AMONG NATION’S ELITE All District Comprehensive High Schools Earn Silver Medals in Magazine’s Latest Evaluation All six comprehensive high schools in Capistrano Unified School District were identified as among the elite in the latest state and national rankings released by U.S. News & World Report magazine. The magazine examined more than 19,400 public high schools in 50 states plus the District of Columbia using data from the 2011-12 school year. The top 24 percent of eligible schools in this national review were awarded either gold, silver, or bronze medals. The six CUSD high schools earned silver medals with rankings in the top 5 percent, according to the magazine’s analysis. Among District high schools, Tesoro placed highest nationally at 545 followed by Dana Hills, 605; Aliso Niguel, 753; San Clemente; 757; San Juan Hills, 787; and Capistrano Valley, 823. “These new nationwide high school rankings place our six medal-earning comprehensive high schools among the best in the nation, and is yet again another means of confirmation

that our students are receiving an exceptional education,” said Board President John M. Alpay. “This survey also validates the decision made to make classroom instruction our top priority, and further recognizes the contributions of all our employees who have more than diligently implemented this emphasis.”

Of the 2,026 public high schools in the state, 600 earned medals, and only gold or silver schools were eligible for a state ranking in California. Tesoro ranked 114th in the state followed by Dana Hills, 124; Aliso Niguel, 152; San Clemente; 153; San Juan Hills, 159; and Capistrano Valley, 168.

The six evaluated and ranked comprehensive high schools bettered the state’s academic goals and scored highly on the college readiness index, which measures student participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests.

Garrett Williams, Scottie Butler and Austin Drysch Hold Top Honors for SMCHS Class of 2014

Three Santa Margarita students have been named the head of their class and will address the Class of 2014 at the 10 a.m. May 30 commencement ceremony at the UCI Bren Center. Austin Drysch (UCLA) and Garrett Williams (Georgetown University) earned the honor of co-valedictorians, while Scottie Butler (Columbia University) will represent the Class of 2014 as the salutatorian. The valedictorian honor is bestowed upon the senior who has earned the highest GPA over seven semesters. The salutatorian title is given to the senior who has earned the second highest GPA. This year, two students tied for the highest GPA. All three students are a part of Santa Margarita’s International Baccalaureate Programme, a rigorous academic program offered at SMCHS and select high schools across the globe. The program provides highly motivated students an opportunity to take IB courses and earn an internationally-recognized diploma. When I came to Santa Margarita for the first time four years ago, I had never even dreamed of being valedictorian, but I truly feel honored to be bestowed with this award. Although it has been a struggle at times, I know that all of my friends here at Santa Margarita have supported me along the way. What did it take to get where you are today? I doubt that I would have been able to handle the rigor of becoming valedictorian if it wasn’t for the balance I have between my schoolwork and my free time. Even when I had hours of work, I knew there was always someone I could ask for help if I needed it. Do you have any advice for underclassmen? My advice for underclassmen would be to focus on your Page 8

work, especially your homework, as it allows you to study less in the future. This simple aspect has been essential to my success, as I know I am already at least partially prepared for a test before I even start studying. Commit the knowledge to your longterm memory through the homework, and simply refresh yourself by studying before the test. I think someday working for the State Department or the CIA would be truly amazing, as it would allow me to follow my interests in political affairs and international relations. Also, I think due to China’s increasingly prominent influence in international affairs, continuing to study Mandarin will help me in a career of either international business or politics. How do you think your experiences here at Santa Margarita will help you in the future? I think that Santa Margarita instills a sense of morality within its students that cause them to be able to distinguish between right and wrong. The fundamental teachings of this school have allowed us to grow as individuals focused on bettering the community around us and to endure experiences that shape our characters. We have been given the ability to given the skills necessary to

I am so grateful for spending my high schools as an Eagle and I am incredibly appreciate for the opportunities I have been offered. How does it feel to be the Valedictorian of your class? I am very honored and blessed to be the valedictorian. I think it’s a very exciting award to be given and it is especially rewarding that all of my hard work over the past four years has been recognized. I am incredibly pleased and I want to thank everyone who helped me get to where I am today. I don’t necessarily think that being named valedictorian is something that changes the meaning of my success over the past four years. I am still the same person regardless of if I am the valedictorian, and I still have the same GPA. With that said, it is very gratifying to have my efforts externally recognized by the school. What is your favorite high school memory? I think my favorite high school memory was my trip to Beijing and Tokyo for an MUN conference during March of my senior year. Being exposed to cultures and ideologies that both tested and complemented my own was an incredible experience. I also am appreciate for this opportunity as it gave me a method to practice the skills of speaking Chinese I have learned in the classroom and apply it to real life dialogue. I am in great debt to all of my teachers at SM that have gone the extra mile to ensure that their students are knowledgeable on course material and truly understand the importance of learning the particular subject they teach. It is the great expectations the teachers have for their students, as well as the expectations the students have for one another, that has pushed me these four years. What is your favorite high school memory? My favorite high school memory is definitely traveling across the globe to China and Japan with the MUN program. Being able to experience firsthand what I was previously only able to study was an incredible experience that I will not forget. The immersion into a culture I had never experienced before was a great way to end my four years in MUN at Santa Margarita.

Three Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) students are traveling East next month after qualifying for the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest taking place June 15-19 in Maryland. Amy Schultz, an eighth-grader at Bernice Ayer Middle School, and ninth-graders Amanda Rooker of San Juan Hills High School and Albert Yu of Tesoro High School, advanced to the national level of the rigorous program after earning

top honors in their respective categories at the California National History Day finals held last month in Riverside. The three CUSD representatives will compete at the University of Maryland in College Park for scholarships and prizes against nearly 3,000 students from the U.S., American Samoa, Guam, In ternational schools, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe. Amy qualified in the Junior Division for her website honoring the role of American women as a vital industrial workforce instrumental to the Allies’ victory in World War II. In the Senior Division, Amanda advanced in the “Individual Performance” category for her dramatic portrayal of three characters central to the Tinker v. National History Day Contest for four consecutive years, competing at the state level as a seventhgrader and as a national finalist for the first time last year. Albert’s entry in the “History Paper” category is titled “The First Step Towards American Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation.” He conducted the initial research for this winning essay without assistance, and nor was it part of any class assignment. National History Day is a yearlong education program that engages students in the discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students produce dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries, and research papers based on research related to an annual theme. The theme for 2014 is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.” Projects are then evaluated at local, state, and national competitions. State Junior and Senior co-champions in each category move on to the National Contest.

Over $900,000 was raised at the event, then a surprise $1 million grant was announced by honorary chairs Julia Argyros and daughter Stephanie Argyros that will specifically fund therapeutic programs for children. Three generations of the Sonenshine family were honored for their longtime support of Human Options that supports women and children affected by domestic violence. This year’s Serious Fun theme, A Salute to Old Hollywood, was an inspiration for 475 guests decked out in apparel from the 1940-1950s Hollywood eras. After a lively poolside cocktail hour and silent auction, the program began by honoring the Sonenshine family with Human Options’ 2014 Dove Award. The family was instrumental in assisting the organization over 33 years ago when Justice Sheila Prell Sonenshine (now retired) counseled clients on the legal process. Ygal and Sheila’s son Danny and wife Kerri later became Three generations of Sonenshine family involved and both have served on the board of directors and in a variety of other leadership positions over the past 13 years. The third generation includes Danny and Kerri’s young daughters Maggie and Sarah who were recognized for fundraising efforts including an annual Halloween costume drive, lemonade stands, birthday gift donations and art projects. Community leaders Karla Kraft, Anderee Berengian and Tamie Rus served as event chairs while Julia Argyros and daughter Stephanie Argyros were honorary event chairs. When first entering the Balboa Bay Club, attendees were able to stroll along the red carpet, complete with old Hollywood paparazzi! A brand new red Ferrari California was on display as a live auction item. It included a weekend California Ferrari experience including use of the car and a two night stay at the Balboa Bay Resort courtesy of Ferrari of Newport Beach. Both the poolside silent auction area and grand ballroom were draped in black and red with an art déco/old Hollywood twist. The menu consisted of cream of white asparagus soup, a petit filet mignon with béarnaise sauce and roasted Chilean sea bass with bordelaise and Meyer lemon sauce. For dessert, salted caramel macadamia nut torte and lemon Human Options Board Chair Tom and Elizabeth Tierney chiffon Tahitian vanilla cheese cake with raspberries were just delightful. Up for grabs were a variety of items; jewelry, vacations, the Ferrari of course and swanky dinners, you name it – even a jail tour and lunch with Orange County Sheriff Hutchens. Some of the top items were the Exclusive Trip to Isreal that went for $30,000; a vacation at Kohanaiki Golf and Ocean Club went twice at $25,000 a piece and a Diamond Flexible Bangle Cuff made someone happy at $10,000. The evening concluded with dancing and live music performed by the N8+ Jazz Band. The mission of Human Options is to provide safe haven and life changing programs to help abused women, their children and families rebuild their lives, while working with the community to break the cycle of domestic violence. Now in its 33rd year, Human Options provides a full continuum of services to stop the violence – from prevention and early intervention programs to emergency shelter and long-term transitional housing. Natalie Michelle Adame 2009 Trabuco Hills High School Graduate Named 2014 Outstanding Graduate at California State University, Long Beach Natalie Michelle Adame, a 2009 graduate of Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo, has been named a 2014 Outstanding Graduate for the College of the Health and Human Services at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). The daughter of David and Vicki Adame of Foothill Ranch, Adame will be recognized at CSULB’s opening College of Health and Human Services commencement ceremony on Tuesday, May 20, when she will officially be conferred her bachelor of science degree in nursing. “I chose nursing because it allows me to care for, love, nurse, and help those in need,” said Adame, who noted that her parents’ careers in healthcare (both are respiratory therapists) helped lead her to pursue nursing. “My passion has always been to work with children and this career will allow me to use my brain and my heart to heal the patients and their families I come in contact with. “I think at the beginning of nursing

school I had this idea that I was going to save lives and change the world,” she added. “I now realize that even if I save one child’s life or change one child’s day for the positive, this has all been worth it.” Adame already has a job lined up, and in August will begin working at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center as a new graduate registered nurse. She said she is “blessed and excited” to have a job straight out of nursing school. Immediately after graduation, however, Adame will be leaving for one month to venture over to Europe and visit numerous countries with a friend from nursing school. I am so excited to explore different cultures in Europe and travel before I start my post-grad life,” she noted. Each CSULB college selects student honorees based on nominations solicited from faculty, staff and other students. Honorees must earn a 3.5 grade-point average or above and demonstrate service

and dedication to CSULB and to the community. At CSULB, Adame has achieved the President’s List every semester since fall 2012, leading to her membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Additionally, her academic achievements have earned her the 2012 Visiting Nurse Association and 2013 Leticia Walsh Nursing Scholarships. Adame’s community service leadership has been impressive, both on a local and international scale. She served as the CSULB California Nursing Student Association’s community service committee director and executive board member. In 2013, she volunteered at Camp Kindle, a camp for children affected by HIV/AIDS. When one of her best friends died in a car accident, she co-founded Cole’s Compassionate Community to inspire others through service. In 2013, she traveled to

Natalie Michelle Adame Muizenberg, South Africa, and worked with Dreams to Reality to teach surfing to children from the Capricorn Township. Her clinical experiences include rotations with five hospitals in the L.A. and Orange County areas. I had a conversation with a patient the other day, an eighty-five year old doctor (retired). We were discussing how, when, in the 1960’s I was a hospital corpsman in Dr. Michael Tessier the Navy and he was an established physician, we were just starting to use new needles on every patient, as opposed to re-sharpening old ones. The old way sounds so barbaric. That got me thinking about the other things we do today to make dental work easier and better. Thirty-seven years ago, while in dental school, there was nothing that bonded to tooth structure. Today we can bond a 0.75mm thick porcelain veneer to the front surface of a tooth, dramatically improving its appearance while removing a lot less tooth structure. The old analogue x-rays required some nasty chemicals for development. Today, digital x-rays go right into the computer, where they can be e-mailed to anywhere in the world. The definition is dramatically better, and the amount of radiation they expose the patient to is way less than walking around in the sun. We also take digital panographic x-rays which are totally extra-oral, and show a complete picture of, say, the wisdom teeth and surrounding tissues, or any bone abnormalities like cysts or even bone cancer in the jaws that regular x-rays don’t pick up.

I wear a battery-powered headlight that gives me better illumination than I’ve ever had before (no more working in the dark). For smaller cavities, we use a sandblaster istead fo the drill. No anesthetic is required, and there’s no heat of friction which otherwise might result in fractured teeth in years to come. Replacing missing teeth is still done with fixed tooth-colored porcelain bridges (don’t come out) bridges made of toothcolored porcelain and have no unsightly or irritating external hardware. Alternatively, implants are as close to 100% reliable as anything ever is, they don’t involve the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Frequently, where a root canal on a questionable tooth used to be the only option, now that offender is removed and replaced with an implant. We’ve been using a laser for the past six years to treat gum problems. The old way of using a knife to cut the gums and peel them off the bone to fix a defect in the boney socket in which a tooth is situated was very painful for about seven to ten days after the procedure. Today, the laser allows us to avoid the knife and sutures and the post-operative pain, and we can actually expect the gum tissue to re-attach to the tooth structure. FORMER BOARD MEMBER Dennis sitar SAYS OAK GROVE TAKEOVER OF COTO DE CAZA EQUESTRIAN CENTER FOR LUXURY HOMES WILL LIKELY CAUSE IT TO FAIL

There have been several positive articles written in local newspapers covering Oak Grove’s pursuit to purchase the Coto de Caza Equestrian Center. This is not one of them. The hostile takeover attempt of the Coto de Caza Equestrian Center by Oak Grove, LLC should be of grave concern to all Coto de Caza residents. The Equestrian Center which is owned by the Silver Bronze

Corporation has been a symbolic center and a serene image of life in the Coto Valley from the beginning of Coto de Caza. I am sure one of the main reasons people moved to Coto was for the life style. The life style associated with living in a community with amenities like tennis, golf and horses. There are a lot of tennis and golf communities but not many equestrian. So this makes Coto very special having all three. Now, feature in your mind the equestrian center no longer existing. How would that change your image of the Coto Valley? How about the housing values? If Oak Grove has its way more than likely that will be the case. Their plan is to cannibalize the most valuable part of the Equestrian Center and turn it into luxury lots. Oak Grove has no more interest in the equestrian area than making a financial killing on the property. Robert O Hill from Oak Grove has provided several plans incorporating the remainder of the equestrian center in confined compact conditions which in my opinion would reduce its chances to succeed and survive.

Actions speak louder than words and Mr. O Hill’s actions lead me to distrust him completely. I am confident that the court will find his going around the Silver Bronze Board and directly approaching its shareholders violates Silver Bronze Corporation by-laws. If he is buying their votes at $30,000 apiece, this tells you how insincere his words are and where his focus is. As far as I am able to determine, nearly all shareholders receiving this outrageous overpayment no longer

live in Coto. By way of his actions sneaking behind the Silver Bronze Corporation Board he has proven himself to be untrustworthy and likely to ruin the entire equestrian center in the name of profit. This kind of greed should not be tolerated. If you are dismayed that your community may be radically altered by people WHO NO LONGER LIVE IN COTO please contact the President of your homeowner’s association and voice your concern.

The Rotary Club of Coto de Caza / Rancho Santa Margarita announced that Jeff Bott, senior public affairs and community relations representative for the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA), will speak at its 7 a.m. meeting on Thursday, June 5 at the Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. He will provide an update on Orange County’s toll roads transitioning to cashless payment methods and will address the status of the State Route 241 Tesoro Extension Project. “We are honored to work with Jeff Bott of the Transportation Corridor Agencies to bring the members of the Rotary and the local community an update on how OC commuters can expect to be affected both currently

and in the future,” said Derek Godfrey, president of the Rotary Club of Coto de Caza/Rancho Santa Margarita. “We encourage both members and non-members to join us for breakfast and learn more about the agency’s projects and their impact on Orange County.” Bott has worked for the TCA, a public agency that built and operates the largest network of toll roads in California for the past 19 years. As senior public affairs and community relations representative, he is responsible for communicating to the public about The Toll Roads. As a resident of San Clemente, Bott serves on the Board of Directors for the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce and was elected chairman for 2010. San Juan Capistrano School District Honors Staff at Awards Ceremony Awards Recognize Employees Who Support District’s Instructional Mission Six members of the Capistrano Unified School District non-teaching staff were named its 2014 Classified Employees of the Year at an awards ceremony held Monday, May 19. California has used the third week in May to recognize the contributions of its classified school employees, which includes such important staff members as bus drivers, secretaries, instructional assistants, food service workers, and custodians. “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I take great pleasure in congratulating the six winners and all the nominees for their well-deserved recognition at this year’s program,” said Board President John M. Alpay. “Our classified employees are an integral part of the district’s educational mission in supporting our children’s academic achievement, health, nutrition, and safety.” At the ceremony hosted at Capistrano Valley High School, 105 nominees were recognized and winners in six categories were announced. VICKY CARABINI INVITED TO JOIN MISSION PRESERVATION FOUNDATION BOARD Vicky Carabini never met a board she didn’t like, but when it comes to Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Mission Preservation Foundation Board, she admits there is something special about it. Carabini was recently invited to join to the Board, and she couldn’t be happier. “I was beyond honored,” said Carabini, who has lived with her husband Michael in South Orange County since 1985 and in San Juan Capistrano since 1996. “I think about who they’ve chosen as board members in the past and that they would even think to nominate me to be a part of such an elite group of people, that are all inspirational in their own way, I’m just really honored.” Mechelle Lawrence Adams, Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Executive Director, is confident Carabini will be a great addition to the Board. “She is a bundle of smart energy with passion and dedication for anything she pursues,” Lawrence Adams said. “She has a mother’s heart, and a business person’s pragmatism. I am so happy she’s on board for preserving the Mission

and will share with us her eye for marketing and making a difference.” Carabini ran her own marketing and public relations company before she decided she needed to be a full-time mom to daughters Christina and Anna Maria. So she retired her company in 1997, devoted her time to her daughters and still found time to raise funds for Mission Hospital. She has spent plenty of time on one board or another over the years, including the Board of Valient Women and the Board for Art and Creativity for Healing. She is on the board for the Italian Arts Council at Bowers Museum, the Area Coordinator for the NIAF (National Italian American Foundation) and most recently, Chair of the Italian Studies Council at Chapman University. Carabini also was appointed Ambassador so San Juan Capistrano’s sister city -- Capestrano, Italy -and has been active in promoting Italian events throughout San Juan Capistrano. Now she embarks on a new venture with Mission San Juan Capistrano, sparking an excitement she just can’t quite put her finger on. “It may be the fact that it’s such

a historic piece of history right here in San Juan Capistrano,” she said. “It may be that when I walk into the Mission I feel like I’ve walked into my hometown back in Italy. It may be that it’s such a treasure and that I believe in keeping something like the Mission for generations to come. “Every time I go to an event there, the leadership at the Mission and the staff do such a fabulous job. We’ve been long-time supporters of the Mission and my children have

developed the same passion for that beautiful treasure that’s right here in our own backyard.” Carabini said she’s had a chance to look at a recent Board Report, and can’t wait to get involved. “I thought, oh my gosh, this is so amazing,” she said. “I’ve sat on so many boards and never been so impressed with how much they do, how forward thinking they are. The Mission Store itself is such an overwhelming success already.”

The Future of Education STEAM Day at St. John’s

By: St. John’s Episcopal School St. John’s kicked off the new science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) initiative with its inaugural STEAM Day on Monday, April 28. During STEAM Day, students worked in teams to design and build projects that integrated concepts from all educational disciplines. The day served as the culmination of weeks of team planning and research. STEAM uses a project-based learning approach to encourage students to think creatively and critically while helping them understand the connections between different academic subjects and real world application of those concepts. Each grade level took on a different challenge, from building buoyant

Gluten-Free Olive, Shallot and Rosemary Focaccia Ingredients: 2 cups lukewarm water 2 teaspoons sugar 2 packets instant dry yeast 4 eggs 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, plus extra for pan 3 cups brown rice flour, divided 1/2 cup each: white rice flour, sorghum flour and tapioca starch/ flour 1 tablespoon xanthan gum 2 1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon cornmeal Olive Topping: 5 cloves garlic, minced 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, coarsely chopped 1 (6 ounce) can California Ripe Olives, well drained 2 medium shallots, thinly sliced 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan

cheese 2 teaspoons Maldon salt Directions: Place water, sugar and yeast in a large mixer bowl; let stand for five minutes or until yeast begins to foam. Beat in eggs and olive oil. Add flours, xanthan gum and salt and beat well with a dough hook for five minutes, scraping down the sides occasionally. Mixture should be a very thick batter. Lightly oil two medium baking sheets and sprinkle with cornmeal. Spread batter about 1-inch thick into pans and top with garlic, rosemary, olives, shallots, cheese and Maldon salt, in that order, pressing lightly into the dough. Let stand in a warm spot for 30 minutes or until dough has doubled in size. Preheat oven to 400 F. Bake focaccia for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown, tenting with foil during the last five or 10 minutes if topping browns too quickly. 4 ounces sliced Genova salame 4 ounces sliced Sopressa Veneta Directions: Place bread on a board and carefully cut in half horizontally. Spread tapenade over the bottom half and top with cheese, ham, salame and sopressa. Cover with focaccia top and press down gently. Cut in wedges. Makes eight servings.

Digital ‘spring cleaning’ tips help prevent cyber crime Every day, more than 1 million people become victims of cyber crime, according to the 2013 Norton Cyber Crime Report. The Heartbleed bug, which attacked vulnerable versions of the OpenSSL software, put even more people at risk of hackers accessing their personal information shared on many websites. In 2013, the Target Corporation data breach affected 110 million customers. Yet, according to Norton, nearly 50 percent of tablet and smartphone users continue to neglect basic precautions such as passwords, security software or backup files to secure their mobile devices. It is only a matter of time until the next digital bug or retailer data breach. To protect yourself, cyber security experts recommend “spring cleaning” your cyber footprint. “Many people don’t realize that everything they do is being tracked online,” says Ed Hill, Web application consultant and professor in the College of Engineering and Information Sciences at DeVry University. “Consumers should take precautionary steps to clean up their Page 28

cyber footprint for their own cyber safety.” Hill offers tips for consumers to clear or secure their cyber footprint and avoid a cyber crime: 1. Delete abandoned accounts and review your apps. If you’re no longer active on a website, delete your account - and the personal data it holds - to prevent your information from being used or sold. Additionally, there is no reason for apps on your phone to have access to your information. 2. Use the “Do Not Track” feature of your browser. The feature informs websites you visit that you wish to opt-out of tracking. Think of this as a digital “do not call” list. This is not a perfect solution because it is up to the website managers to decide if they will honor this request. However, it can help reduce the number of websites tracking your information.
