Survey: Teens not as cyber savvy as parents might think While some parents may not know a gigabyte from Google, they still need to help their kids stay safe and protect personal information online. A new survey by LifeLock finds that some of today’s young people don’t understand the dangers of their techheavy lifestyles. While 89 percent of the 700 teenagers polled said they don’t give out too much personal information online (although 46 percent said their friends do), many admitted to engaging in online behaviors that could put their personal information at risk. Three-fourths of kids 13 to 17 included some type of personal information (partial or complete birth date, address, phone number, school, etc.) on their social media profiles. “Clearly, there’s a disconnect between what teens - and their parents - think they know about online safety and what they’re actually doing,” says Hilary Schneider, LifeLock’s president. “While teens may be experts at using technology and social media to stay connected, we as parents must help them understand the steps necessary to protect their online privacy or how their online
actions today could affect their lives in the future.” Despite near-daily stories of social media misbehavior damaging the careers of politicians, athletes and entertainers, nearly half of surveyed teens don’t expect their online activities to hurt them later in life. Many were unaware of how to tell whether a site is secure before entering personal information. “Children are favorite targets for identity thieves because they have clean credit histories,” says Schneider, who herself is a mother of teenagers. “Fraud may go undetected for years until the child applies for credit as a young adult. With the risks so high, teens and parents have to take steps to protect their privacy, security and identities online.” Some tips: * Limit the personal information you share in your social media profile. Listing your full name, full address or even your birth date could potentially open the door to identity thieves. * Do not accept “friend” requests from anyone you have not already met in person, even if he or she claims to be a friend of a friend.
* Use strong passwords for each social media account and for all your mobile devices. Strong passwords include capital and lowercase letters, numerals and special symbols. Consider using a pass-phrase like “LincolnClassOf2013IsTheBestEver!” or the first letter of each word: “LCo2013itBE!” * Do your best to verify the security and authenticity of a website before you interact with it, buy something from it or give any information about yourself. Look for the URL to begin with “https” or for the lock symbol on
the page that indicates a secure site at checkout. * Remember that anything you post online is forever. It’s almost impossible to completely eliminate information from the Internet. Inappropriate material posted online now may affect your future relationships, ability to get into the college of your choice - even your future job prospects. “Today’s teens use technology in virtually every aspect of their lives,” Schneider said. “But they can still use some help from parents to ensure they safely navigate the digital world.”

Whole-Family Entertainment; Independence Day Proceeds to Benefit Local Charities Classic cars, homemade floats and marching bands will once again fill the streets of Coto De Caza Drive during the 34th Annual 4th of July Parade and Festival, hosted by The Rotary Club of Coto de Caza/Rancho Santa Margarita. Celebrating our nation’s independence, the summer festivities will host a variety of fun family activities including bounce houses, carnival games, on-site food vendors and a beer garden for adults. The celebration will kick off at 10 a.m. with the parade starting at Plano Trabuco and Coto de Caza Drive and ending at the Country Fair housed at the Sports Park in Coto de Caza. This year’s grand marshal for the parade will be local resident Major General William Lyon, USAF (Ret), a homebuilding icon and retired Air Force Commander who will be showcasing a vintage touring car or two from the Lyon family car collection. The parade will also feature local Coto De Caza community groups and leaders: While the parade and fair admission are free to the public, the Rotary Club will spearhead specialty sponsorship opportunities including the Country Fair vendor booths and parade entries. The 4th of July Parade is open to all ages, and registration is currently underway for event participants in the areas of classic cars, golf carts, self-made floats, sports teams and performance groups. “We are excited to once again celebrate our nation’s freedom with a parade that will certainly entertain and wow our local residents of Coto de
Caza and Rancho Santa Margarita,” said Darrell Starnes, member of the Rotary Club of Coto De Caza/Rancho Santa Margarita. “We are incredibly grateful for all the vendors and sponsors helping put this celebration together, and are looking forward to seeing this year’s parade float creativity.” For more than 30 years, the Rotary Club of Coto de Caza/Rancho Santa Margarita del Sol has supported local charities and sponsored school

Cooking in the kitchen is a great activity for families, including children of all ages. Consider the following ways you can get your children up and out of their nests each morning for fun family time together over a delicious breakfast: * Little children - The youngest members of the family are excellent ingredient mixers and are really good at decorating the table. Give them a craft project to create a table placemat for each plate, or teach them how to fold the napkins in a pretty way. * Older children - If you have kids in elementary school, ask them to put their math skills to use in measuring ingredients for the meal. They can also pour the milk or juice drinks and put the finished breakfast meal on a plate in a decorative way for serving at the table. * Teenagers - Ask your teenagers to be responsible for cooking the food. Anything dealing with the stove or oven is their responsibility, and they should also keep an eye out for younger siblings getting too close. * Parents - You are the overseers of the entire kitchen project. You get to determine the final menu, and make certain that all the breakfast foods will be prepared for serving at the same time so everyone can sit down and enjoy the meal together. Once the food is ready and plated, have everyone sit down at the table together to enjoy the creation. Soon it will become a tradition that you celebrate your weekend breakfasts
together as a family, creating fun memories for everyone. As you begin your family breakfasts together, try the following fun recipe your kids will love. Hungry Jack Hashbrowns are used to create nests, with some eggs and cheese in the middle for a creative springthemed breakfast dish. Hungry Jack Hashbrowns are ready to use, fully seasoned and cook perfectly crispy every time. They are made of 100 percent Idaho potatoes and do not require refrigeration. This recipe also can be used for a brunch if you are having company over. Hashbrown Nests with Eggs Ingredients: 1 carton (4.2 ounces) Hungry Jack Original Hashbrown Potatoes 3 tablespoons cooking oil 6 slices American cheese, each slice cut into four quarters 6 large eggs 2 tablespoons bacon bits 1 tablespoon butter Cooking spray Salt
Directions: Heat oven to 425 F. Spray a 12cup muffin pan with no-stick cooking spray. Fill hashbrowns carton to fill line with hot water. Let stand 12 minutes. Drain very well. Transfer potatoes to a mixing bowl and mix in the oil. Scoop potatoes into each muffin cup, forming a nest. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven. Beat eggs in a mixing bowl. Heat a large non-stick skillet. Melt the butter in the pan, and gently cook eggs over low heat, stirring constantly and breaking up any large curds. Cook eggs for 5 minutes, or until creamy and soft enough to easily scoop with a spoon. Season to taste with salt. Place two small cheese squares in the potato-lined muffin cup and top with about a tablespoon of the scrambled eggs. Sprinkle each muffin cup with bacon bits. Bake for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Gently run a butter knife around the edge of each muffin cup, to loosen. Allow nests to cool for 5 minutes, then remove from the pan and serve.

Nothing to sneeze at: tips for seasonal allergy relief Spring is upon us, and if you have seasonal allergies, you may be less excited about that than most. After all, what fun is finally freeing your face from that scarf if you’re just going to bury it in a tissue? It’s no fun at all, but allergies don’t have to make you miserable. “The key to surviving allergies is knowing what triggers your symptoms,” said allergist James Sublett, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “Because there can be millions of pollen particles in the air, finding allergy relief can seem nearly impossible for some. But by knowing what triggers your allergy symptoms, and how to avoid these allergens, you can be on your way to a sneeze-free season. Here are tips from ACAAI to help you find relief and enjoy spring. * The feel of cotton. For allergy suffers, not all clothing materials are created equal. Research shows that when synthetic fabrics rub against one another, they create an electrical charge that attracts pollen, which, as it turns out, is also electrically charged. Natural fibers such as cotton also breathe better, so they stay drier and less hospitable to moisture-loving
mold. * Adjust your workout routine. After months indoors, you can’t wait to exercise outside. However, exercising causes you to breathe more deeply and inhale the pollen that affects your allergy symptoms. If you’re planning a vigorous workout, try to stay indoors and if you’re planning on taking a casual walk, take a nondrowsy antihistamine before you go. Exercise outdoors when pollen counts are at their lowest - before dawn and in the late afternoon or early evening. * Garden smart. Think your spring allergies are going to force you to quit gardening? Think again. Taking an antihistamine about half an hour before you head outside will help. You should also wear gloves and a NIOSH-rated 95 filter mask if your tasks including digging in the dirt, which can stir up pollen. Avoid touching your eyes, and be sure to wash your hands, hair and clothing once you go back indoors. * Take something a little stronger. Over the counter intranasal steroids (nasal sprays) as well as non-drowsy antihistamines and decongestants can be beneficial for those suffering from mild allergies. However, people suffering from more severe allergies

will benefit from seeing an allergist. “An allergist will help you develop an action plan with ways to avoid allergy triggers and determine what treatment is best for your individual needs,” says Dr. Sublett. Many severe allergy sufferers find relief in immunotherapy - allergy shots that help the body build resistance to the effects of the allergen. While there is no cure for the more than 50 million Americans suffering from allergies, immunotherapy is known to modify and prevent disease progression. * Eliminate uninvited guests. You can make your spring allergies more bearable by limiting your exposure
to indoor allergens. Vacuum your furniture, leave your shoes by the door, shower frequently, cover your floors with washable throw rugs and use a dehumidifier to limit your mold exposure. All of these steps will help, and look for a good air purifier with a HEPA filter. Spring allergies are a fact of life but you don’t have to let them dictate yours. Employ the tips above, and you’ll be able to enjoy the warmer weather without constantly reaching for a tissue. Eight ways to get the most out of your trip to the farmers market When spring arrives, leaves, flowers and robins aren’t the only signs of warm weather to reappear. Spring also heralds the return of farmers markets. A trip to the market is a great opportunity to indulge in fresh healthy produce and to expand your horizons by trying new items or preparing them in different ways. Here are eight tips to make the most of your visit to the local farmers market: * Note the hours and dates of your local market on your calendar. Set reminders on your smartphone that will alert you when favorite items such as tomatoes, peas, beans and strawberries come into season. * Prepare your refrigerator and kitchen for the season’s harvest. Clean out your fridge’s produce drawer, and stock up on items that complement fresh produce, such as salad dressings and seasonings that can be used to turn basic veggies into delicious meals. Cheech Marin Hosts Orange County Family justice Center “Runway of Strength Gala” Photos by Elise Souza The Orange County Family Justice Center (OCFJC) Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides direct victim assistance, empowerment and prevention resources to victims and families whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence had their largest fundraiser with Actor and Comedian Cheech Marin as host. Marin, known for The Lion King (1994), Nash Bridges (1996) and Cars (2006) was Master of Ceremonies for inaugural “Runway of Strength Gala” at the home of long-time OCFJC supporters Patrick and Jolynn Mahoney in Anaheim Hills at their Lost World Estate. This VIP event raised $250,000, featured a silent auction, live auction, passed appetizers, food stations and cocktails among the 480 guests who attended the event. Culminating in a high fashion modeling show featuring Betinnis Fashions, models made up of survivors of family violence, celebrities, and dignitaries strutted down the “Runway of Strength”. Guests were privy to a feast designed by Debbie Juliani from Aramark Sports and Entertainment as well as a tour of the Lost World Estates. Wth its sprawling gardens covering nearly 2 acres of tropical plants, rare palms, water features and a variety of seating areas, guests enjoyed the sights and dense vegetation that surrounded the 11,000 square foot home. The fashion show was hosted by Cheech Marin with Chadia Alameddin, owner of Betinnis in Brea. Marin’s funny personality shined as he introduced the “models” as they came out dancing, strutting and seriously having a good time showing off the latest in fashions by Betinnis. From casual wear to formal gowns, it was a true party atmosphere on the runway! The crowd went wild clapping and dancing along with the creative moves from the models. Honored for the John Welter Community Partner Award were Dr. Cynthia Coad and her husband Dr. Thomas Coad. Cynthia served on the OCFJC board of trustees from the inception; she and her husband Thomas have been contributors to its programs and its growth for the past 9 years. Also honored for the OCFJC Corporate Partner of the Year were CW Industries, Inc. with proprietors Roseli and Craig Wildvank. Since the OCFJC was founded, the Wildvank’s and their business CW Industries, Inc., have been very generous with their annual support – it has enabled the center to expand its programs and serve more victims of violence each year. The live auction gave folks some spectacular items that are not normally available for purchase such as The Lost World Wine Cellar Dinner for 10 – the winning bid came in at $4,000.00 where ten folks can enjoy a five course gourmet meal by Aramark Chefs paired with champagnes and fine wines from Pat and Jolynn Mahoney’s family wine cellar along with a tour of the lush grounds which includes their whimsical and surrealistic art collection. There was also the Bordeaux France/St. Emilion Experience – that lucky winner paid $5,200 for a 5 day 4 night trip at the Chateau Des Amis, which is a 4 bedroom Luxury Villa owned by the proprietor of Rarecat Wines. It’s a luxurious and charming chateau in the heart of St. Emilion where this lucky couple will receive a private guided winery tour and tastings at top Grand Cru Chateau’s in Bordeux’s wine country. There was more including a deep sea fishing trip, a custom jewelry piece, and a men’s Corum watch. The after party with live music by local Blues band Detour 91 had everyone on their feet dancing the evening away. The After Party food was just as amazing – guests enjoyed Cali Street Dogs, Shrimp Corn Dogs, Petite Cuban Sandwiches, Bags of Bacon Carmel Pop Corn, Dave’s Hand Crafted Pizza and a Hand Crafted Dessert Display that had a variety of sweets to choose from. All proceeds from the “Runway of Strength” Gala will fund essential programs provided by the OCFJC. Founded by retired Anaheim Police Chief John Welter in 2006 serves all of Orange County providing direct victim assistance, empowerment and prevention resources to victims and families whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault and elder abuse. Nothing to sneeze at: tips for seasonal allergy relief Spring is upon us, and if you have seasonal allergies, you may be less excited about that than most. After all, what fun is finally freeing your face from that scarf if you’re just going to bury it in a tissue? It’s no fun at all, but allergies don’t have to make you miserable. “The key to surviving allergies is knowing what triggers your symptoms,” said allergist James Sublett, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “Because there can be millions of pollen particles in the air, finding allergy relief can seem nearly impossible for some. But by knowing what triggers your allergy symptoms, and how to avoid these allergens, you can be on your way to a sneeze-free season. Here are tips from ACAAI to help you find relief and enjoy spring. * The feel of cotton. For allergy suffers, not all clothing materials are created equal. Research shows that when synthetic fabrics rub against one another, they create an electrical charge that attracts pollen, which, as it turns out, is also electrically charged. Natural fibers such as cotton also breathe better, so they stay drier and less hospitable to moisture-loving
mold. * Adjust your workout routine. After months indoors, you can’t wait to exercise outside. However, exercising causes you to breathe more deeply and inhale the pollen that affects your allergy symptoms. If you’re planning a vigorous workout, try to stay indoors and if you’re planning on taking a casual walk, take a nondrowsy antihistamine before you go. Exercise outdoors when pollen counts are at their lowest - before dawn and in the late afternoon or early evening. * Garden smart. Think your spring allergies are going to force you to quit gardening? Think again. Taking an antihistamine about half an hour before you head outside will help. You should also wear gloves and a NIOSH-rated 95 filter mask if your tasks including digging in the dirt, which can stir up pollen. Avoid touching your eyes, and be sure to wash your hands, hair and clothing once you go back indoors. * Take something a little stronger. Over the counter intranasal steroids (nasal sprays) as well as non-drowsy antihistamines and decongestants can be beneficial for those suffering from mild allergies. However, people suffering from more severe allergies
will benefit from seeing an allergist. “An allergist will help you develop an action plan with ways to avoid allergy triggers and determine what treatment is best for your individual needs,” says Dr. Sublett. Many severe allergy sufferers find relief in immunotherapy - allergy shots that help the body build resistance to the effects of the allergen. While there is no cure for the more than 50 million Americans suffering from allergies, immunotherapy is known to modify and prevent disease progression. * Eliminate uninvited guests. You can make your spring allergies more bearable by limiting your exposure
to indoor allergens. Vacuum your furniture, leave your shoes by the door, shower frequently, cover your floors with washable throw rugs and use a dehumidifier to limit your mold exposure. All of these steps will help, and look for a good air purifier with a HEPA filter. Spring allergies are a fact of life but you don’t have to let them dictate yours. Employ the tips above, and you’ll be able to enjoy the warmer weather without constantly reaching for a tissue. Power shoes : Choosing the right footwear for climbing the corporate ladder Climbing the corporate ladder shoes at the office means wearing

While the importance of proper footwear may seem obvious for professions that require standing or walking all day, such as waitressing, nursing or cooking, poor shoe choices can also trip you up in an office setting. “At best, sore feet can be a troublesome distraction when you need to concentrate in a meeting or be at your best during a job interview,” says Dr. Matthew Garoufalis, a podiatrist and president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). “At worst, severe foot injuries from poor footwear can require corrective surgery that puts you out of commission - and out of the office - for extended periods of time.” While you may assume that some professions are more prone to injury than others, or that women wearing high heels are more at risk, everyone working nine to five should take steps to ensure they head to work every morning wearing shoes that will help - not hinder - how well they do their jobs. The APMA offers some advice for choosing work shoes: Shoes for women For many women, wearing dress
high heels five days a week. When you’re choosing a dress shoe for work, whether it’s a high heel or flat, keep these tips in mind: * Avoid wearing heels higher than two inches. If you choose to wear very high heels for a meeting or other work occasion, limit the time you’re in them and change into a lower, more comfortable pair as soon as possible. * Vary heel height day-to-day. Look for “walking” pumps - also called “comfort” or “performance” pumps with mid- to lower-heels. The APMA offers a list of shoes that have earned its Seal of Acceptance for promoting good foot health. * Look for plenty of toe room. Ideally, pumps with wider, rounded or square toe boxes give your toes more room. Avoid shoes with pointy toes that squeeze digits into unnatural positions. Cramped toes can cause a host of foot woes, from bunions to ingrown toenails. * Choose wider heels that offer more stability. Stiletto heels and similar pointy heels are less stable and may cause spinal misalignment and ankle injuries. * Beware ballet flats. You may think no-heel shoes are better for your feet, but often that’s not the case.
Ballet flats offer little cushioning or support, and can also cause foot problems such as plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the tendon that connects the heel bone to the toes. * Regardless of heel height or shoe style, look for shoes that offer adequate arch and ankle support, and plenty of cushioning. Shoes for men * Look for good quality oxford styles - like wing-tip or cap-toe designs which tend to be best. You can also opt for slip-ons, dressy loafers and low dress boots. * Avoid wearing the same pair of shoes every day. You should have at least three or four pairs of good quality professional shoes. * When shoes become too worn to be supportive anymore, replace them.
You may be tempted to hold on to that old pair of shoes you love, but apart from looking unprofessional, worn out shoes also provide less support for your feet. Both men and women should keep a few common tips in mind when shoe shopping: * Always shop at the end of the day when feet are at their largest. * Choose quality materials that allow the foot to breathe. * Look for shoes that offer good support. * Never buy a pair of shoes that are uncomfortable, assuming you’ll “break them in.” Shoes should be comfortable right away. If they’re not, then they’re not the right shoes for your feet!

From floor to fixtures: Top spring home decor trends add style and personality Spring is in the air and summer is right around the corner, which means it’s time to refresh your indoor spaces to reflect the energy and optimism of the season. The top home decor trends of spring 2015 take a fresh approach to traditional design elements to create an aesthetic that is fresh and full of life. Best yet, the trends are easily accessible, so anyone can update their space with a few simple tips. Carpet More homeowners are seeking the beauty, comfort and safety that carpet provides, making it a top flooring trend for spring 2015 and beyond. What types of carpet are popular? “New soft fibers,” says Vickie Gilstrap, director of design services for The Dixie Group, a top U.S. carpet manufacturer. “Consumers went away from wall-to-wall carpet, as hard surface flooring gained in popularity. Then, people began to miss the softness and warmth
of carpet. Carpet absorbs sound, making homes quieter, and traps dust at the base of the carpet fibers so that dust doesn’t circulate in the room air.- The soft fibers give us a reason to put carpet down again.” She is also seeing increased interest in “mixed-media” carpet styles - with hi-lustre and low-lustre yarns used in the same carpet. Additionally, patterns are being featured on top of texture, giving a multi-dimensional appearance to flooring. Not only stylish, carpet is healthy, too. People with allergies or other sensitivities can choose carpet as a way to improve indoor air quality. A recent study supports previous findings that carpet, when effectively cleaned, traps allergens and other particles, resulting in less dust, dander and airborne contaminants escaping into the air. color doesn’t necessarily require a complete interior overhaul. Consider incorporating spring colors using accent pieces. Texture and pattern This spring, more homeowners are using textures and patterns to make a visual statement through design. PACIFIC SYMPHONY AND BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF SANTA ANA REIGNITE SANTA ANA STRINGS, a heartstrings program Smiles of joy and excitement lit up the faces of 50 elementary school children when they each received a new, shiny violin to take home during the re-launch in January of Pacific Symphony’s Santa Ana Strings (SAS), a Heartstrings program. Thanks to a partnership between the Symphony and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana (BGCSA), SAS returned for a six-month pilot program (with plans to expand to year-round) that provides after-school violin instruction by Symphony and volunteer musicians. SAS is inspired by El Sistema, the international model defined as an intensive youth music program seeking to effect social change through the pursuit of musical excellence. Serving elementary school students living in Santa Ana, the program is designed to foster creativity, perseverance and selfesteem as well as develop teamwork skills through the study and practice of the violin. Now in its fourth season, SAS continues to grow and improve each year. Since its recent launch under the new partnership, SAS has been encouraged by two successful concerts—the first receiving the largest showing of parent and family support in BGCSA’s history, and the second, which took place at a recent Symphony’s Family Musical Mornings. Now SAS gears up for its final pilot performance at the BGCSA on June 10. I feel like I could do anything. When I hear the violin, I think it is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.” “Since its inception, the program has truly been special and touched so many young students’ lives in a positive way,” says Adam Neeley, SAS teaching artist and Symphony violist. “With this new iteration, we are able to create an instructional style that focuses completely on enriching the students’ lives in every way that we can through musical instruction. At every opportunity, we strive to teach Page 24
important life skills through music, such as discipline, togetherness, communication and self-motivation. I don’t hesitate at all after only a few short months to say that it is working.” SAS takes place after school, Monday-Friday at the BGCSA, for students who have elected to participate in the program. “The initial number of interested students was larger than we originally anticipated, which is great!” says Elizabeth Aguilar, the chief operating officer of the BGCSA. “We are very impressed by how seriously the students are taking this program and the level of commitment they have at such a young age.” Mondays and Tuesdays, students receive group lessons from their “Symphony Star,” Neeley. On Wednesdays, Neeley is joined by additional Symphony musicians— Agnes Gottschewski, Christine Frank, Dana Freeman, Carolyn Riley, Shelly Shi and Ayako Sugaya—who provide hands-on instruction for small groups of two-three students to refine what they are learning in the group sessions. On Thursdays and Fridays, volunteer musicians work with students who would like additional instruction or extra time to

practice. With the focused attention of the musicians and the small musicianstudent ratio each Wednesday, students are learning faster than they have in any other prior year of SAS. “Not only are our kids wonderfully progressing in terms of how quickly they are picking up violin technique and musical skill, but I can already see the impact our program is having on them in other ways,” says Neeley. “Nothing could be more rewarding than seeing first-hand their eagerness to work hard, and then be able to share their sense of accomplishment with me, their family and their peers. “What began for these students as an after-school activity has quickly become something they are proud of and invested in,” he continues. “My hope for this class is that by the end of our first six months together, the students will truly feel like young violinists, and that the pride in being a violinist will blossom and become part of each of their self-identities.” The expanded partnership between the Symphony and BGCSA offers many benefits for the SAS program. “Moving this program from a schoolbased model to a community site has provided wonderful opportunities for us to engage with students, starting
