Father’s Day was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. Its first celebration was in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors hadn’t enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. It didn’t have much success initially. In the 1920s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she was studying in the Art Institute of Chicago, and it faded into relative

obscurity, even in Spokane. In the 1930s Dodd returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at a national level. She had the help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes, and any traditional present to fathers. Since 1938 she had the help of the Father’s Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that
it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus “[singling] out just one of our two parents”. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Funny and Creative Ideas for Homemade DIY Father’s Day Crafts and Gifts Show Your Dad that You Care About Him by Making Something Memorable Father’s Day is coming up fast. Are you in need of some funny ideas or useful gifts for your dad as a Father’s Day gift? If so, there are lots of ideas just for that. Father’s Day is all about fathers, and your father in particular. That is why the first thing you need to do is think about what your dad enjoys doing or what he thinks is funny. Then you can start coming up with the funny ideas. First, how about something to do with sports? Almost every father loves sports and if yours is a man who loves his favorite baseball, football or basketball team, then go get him a hat or cap or jersey or something from his team. Next, does your father love funny stuff? Go buy him a funny movie or DVD of his favorite comedy series. Dads love to laugh and have a good time and getting him something funny is always a great idea Another idea is to make some holiday cards from a website that allows you to create them online. Here is one website that can help you with us. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CT010143394.aspx Then, after you make and print them, you can add a whole bunch of funny quotes, sayings and expressions that you can get from this website . http://www.funny-quotes-life.com/ Your father will love this craft idea because he knows you put time and effort into it. Another suggestion is to make gift certificates and then put on them everyday chores that your father does not like to do and that you or someone else in the household would do upon presentation of the certificate. Your dad will really love this because he could save the gift certificates all year long and redeem them whenever he felt like that. Hope you can use these ideas on how to make funny and interesting Father’s Day crafts to celebrate dear old dad. Make sure you get everyone’s input and help while doing this.

Decorate a Cookie Family for Dad’s Day What better way to spoil dad on Father’s Day than with a dessert made just for him? A sweet treat is a great way to say “thank you” to the most important man in your life. And, since it’s his day, choose one that reflects what he loves most of all – his family. The celebration experts at Wilton have created a fun and memorable recipe just for the occasion – Dad’s Perfect Family Cookies. They’re sure to put a smile on Dad’s face. Start with a basic buttery sugar cookie dough; roll and cut with boy, girl, dog and cat cutters. When the cookies are baked and cooled, it’s time to paint the family portrait. Kids will love decorating cutouts in each family member’s likeness – remember to decorate Dad using his favorite colors. Use Color Flow Icing – special icing that makes it easy to outline and color almost any design – to “dress” the cookies. Or for a convenient, readyto-use option, try Cookie Icing – simply heat in the microwave and squeeze onto cookies. Add personal touches with sparkling sugars, sprinkles, and other candies for outfits, buttons and jewelry. Use these amazing cookies as fun place cards, or serve as dessert after Dad’s celebratory meal. Pour him a cold glass of milk and let him relax and enjoy his special treat.
For more fun baking and decorating ideas, visit www.wilton.com. Dad’s Perfect Family Cookies 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1 egg 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract Large and small boy and girl cookie cutters Dog and cat cookie cutters Color Flow Icing Mix 4 cups (about 1 pound) sifted confectioners’ sugar Assorted Icing Colors Mega Sprinkles Tote Assorted Colored Sugars Preheat oven to 350°F. In medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. In large bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add egg and extracts; mix well. Do not chill dough; divide into 2 balls. On floured surface, roll each ball into a circle approximately 12 inches diameter x 1/8 inch thick. Dip cookie cutter in flour be-
fore each use. Bake same-sized cookies together on ungreased cookie sheets 8 to 11 minutes or until cookies are lightly browned. Cool completely. Prepare Color Flow Icing with confectioners’ sugar, following package instructions. You can also substitute Cookie Icing if you prefer. Tint portions of icing a variety of colors with icing color. Outline cookies and “clothing”
with full-strength icing; fill in with thinned icing. Immediately position sprinkles and sugars. Let set. Add hair, facial features, shoes, clothing and other details using full-strength icing. Let dry overnight. Makes about 2-1/2 dozen cookies. *Variation: Substitute Cookie Icing for tinted Color Flow Icing. Decorate as directed above.
PACIFIC SYMPHONY ANNOUNCES GREGORY P. COX AS ITS NEW VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT
Gregory Pierre Cox has been named the new vice president of development for Pacific Symphony. For well over a decade, Cox has garnered a reputation for providing leadership that equates and encourages an environment where staff and volunteers thrive and produce high-end results. As a leader for various nonprofit and educational organizations, Cox has skillfully managed advancement programs and has built and restructured development programs that promote diverse communities—all of which have resulted in increased fund-raising results, more donors and a higher donor retention rate. Most recently, Cox has served as vice president for advancement for Southern California Radio (KPCC, KUOR and KVLA), where he made unprecedented accomplishments including the increase of overall fund-raising results in each of the past two years and growing membership by 23 percent over the previous year. In 2011, Cox was recruited by Claremont Graduate University
and named vice president for advancement. Here, he was responsible for directing all advancement operations for the University and its nine independent schools. Cox also expanded public relations efforts within University Communications, garnering enhanced publicity in national print publications and new media outlets. In 2002, Cox served as the director of development for the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra. His skills as a successful fund-raiser helped to put the orchestra, which had been running in the red for many years, in a strong financial position with a significant surplus. The achievements he accomplished with the orchestra earned him two senior fund-raising positions at California State University, Long Beach. The first position was as the senior director of development for the College of the Arts where he surpassed the annual institutional goal by $10 million. The second was a newly created position as executive director for major gifts and regional development.
Cox’s interest in advancing musical organizations led him to his role as the executive director of the Monadnock Music Festival in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where he rejuvenated and directed the 40-year-old festival. As an individual devoted to work in the non-profit sector and the arts, Cox’s track record began as an executive director for Orchestra X in Houston in 1999. In addition to his professional experience, Cox has strong fund-
raising credentials. A Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) since 2007, he is currently completing a Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) course at the American Institute for Philanthropic Studies at California State University, Long Beach. He is a graduate of the University of New Orleans and a member of both the Association of Fundraising Professionals and Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.

FURTHER POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS IN SALE OF MERRY HILL SCHOOL IS WELCOME NEWS TO COTO DE CAZA RESIDENTS According to Jon Selznick of Hanley Investment Group, the broker representing Nobel Learning Communities (owner of the Merry Hill School site), the deed restriction encumbering the Merry Hill School property in favor of Lennar Corporation was removed in February of this year from the chain of title, allowing the owner of the Merry Hill School site to deliver the property with clean marketable title. The buyer that had been in escrow to purchase the property awaiting the deed restriction removal has already begun their due diligence, commonly known as a feasibility study, into community support for a rezoning by the County of Orange to a residential use. Given the vast supply of commercial property in surrounding Rancho Santa Margarita a commercial use is no longer highest and best use for the property. The concept has seen vast support from the various subdivisions in Coto De Caza, and the CZ Master Association has asked the buyer to share more information with the local neighborhood groups and to discuss with them the proposed senior housing development that many believe will add another complimentary amenity to our already unique

Special Olympics on Parade Raises $297k at Up Up and Away Linda McMillian, Denise Richter, Wendy Lockwood Larson, Jennifer Photos by Ann Chatillon Watchinski, Debbie Angle and Lisa Truman Thanks to the enthusiastic support of 500 guests, Special Olympics Orange County received $297,000 in contributions through Special Olympics on Parade, Up, Up and Away! Donations will be used to underwrite the year-round sports training and competition program for more than 1,700 men, women and children with intellectual disabilities who benefit from Special Olympics Orange County. The event was chaired by Jennifer Watchinski with the help of co-chairs and friends Linda McMillian and Lisa Truman. “We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our guests given in support of the athletes,” said David Armendariz, Regional Director for Special Olympics Orange County. “We applaud their accomplishments. It is a privilege and an honor to help the athletes as they journey to greater levels of independence and self-sufficiency.” The event was a celebration of the athletes that participate in Special Olympics Orange County. During the evening, the Betty Belden Palmer Award honoree for Outstanding Athlete was given to Josh Levine of Irvine. According to Special Olympics Southern California founder Rafer Johnson, “Many athletes reach the pinnacle of their sport and are revered for their outstanding abilities. I have no doubt that Josh is a fine athlete. However, that is not the sole basis for which he is receiving this award. I am honored to present the Betty Belden Award to Josh for his leadership, for his commitment to being Jennifer Bricker with Michael and Natalie Duerksen a team player and for his passion for helping others.” As our guests of honor, Dominique Moceanu and Jennifer Bricker gave a truly inspiring presentation regarding their unique relationship. 1996 Olympic gold medalist gymnast, Dominique Moceanu, is considered one of the most accomplished gymnasts of the modern era. Behind the limelight of her illustrious career, Dominique faced difficult challenges from two domineering men in her life, her coach and her father. Her amaz¬ing story, described in the pages of her New York Times best-selling memoir Off Balance, speaks to the inner strength and courage she found to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Jennifer Bricker always had a passion for tumbling and gymnastics, despite being born without legs. She competed in power tumbling and won the Illinois State High School Tumbling Championship. A gifted athlete, she also played on her high school basketball and softball teams. In 1998, she completed in tumbling at the AAU Junior Olympics. Jennifer’s confidence in herself and enthusiasm for life are an inspiration to all. Jennifer, who was given up for adoption at birth, grew up idolizing Dominique only to find out later in life that she was her biological sister. The event featured a rousing Parade of Champions in which 10 Special Olympics athletes were paired with 10 Team USA Olympians or elite athletes who are champions of Special Olympics. Parade participants included: 1996 Paul Hoffman and Dominque Josh Levine and Rafer Johnson Olympic gold medalist, Dominique Moceanu with Keith Jaramillo of the Irvine Moceanu Eagles; Olympian and 2011 US National Champion in the Heptathlon, Sharon Day with Brandon Briseno from Currie Middle School; 2004 Olympic gold medalist, Amanda Freed Katchka with Chelsa Lenninger of the Anaheim Panthers; Olympian kayaker and 2000 Team USA Flagbearer, Cliff Meidl with Monserrat Tapia from Currie Middle School; 1960 Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon, Rafer Johnson with Sean Campbell of the Irvine Eagles and Josh Levine, 2013 Outstanding Athlete of the year from the Irvine Eagles; 2012 Olympic gold medalist in water polo, Tumua Anae with Juliana Gomez of Currie Middle School; 2012 Olympic gold medalist in water polo, Courtney Matthewson with Joseph Gorin from the Laguna Hills Hawks; The Illinois state champion in power tumbling, Jennifer Bricker with Cesar Hernandez from Currie Middle School; 2008 Olympic gold medalist in volleyball, Tom Hoff with Tim Johnson from the Irvine Eagles and A volleyball legend with 3 Olympic gold medals, Karch Kiraly with Davis Kline from Currie Middle School. Special Olympics is proud to empower individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, and productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. This is done through year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports, giving athletes ongoing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy in sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship. When we asked local dentist Dr. Michael Te s s i e r why he is always so cheerful, He replied: “because I love my work. What Dr. Michael Tessier I do makes people feel better and look better. What could be better than that? And, almost on a daily basis, my practice is finding new ways to take care of people. ”Dr. Tessier continued. “My office uses the latest in scientific dental advancements such as toothstraightening without metal braces (“Invisalign”); Tooth-colored porcelain crowns that have no metal in them and are subsequently dramatically more attractive and natural looking than the old porcelain-baked-on-to-metal type. I also recommend Porcelain veneers that, with a minimum of tooth structure removal, improve alignment, color, and evenness of front teeth, a process that is accomplished in a remarkably small amount of time. There are so many new scientific dental innovations that modern dentistry is a pleasure for me to practice. I often use a tiny “sandblaster” to do many of our smaller fillings, allowing us to do those fillings without discomfort and subsequently without anesthetic altogether. or cold sores with a laser, dramatically shortening their life and the discomfort they cause. We do gum surgery with a laser (Periolase), not a knife, which is much more effective and greatly reduces any discomfort. Today Removable dentures can be anchored to implants, preventing them from moving and restoring more normal chewing. Another wonderful innovation is Implant crowns, which allow us to replace missing teeth without damaging the teeth on either side of the space where the tooth was originally located. We make an intra-oral appliance that keeps the lower jaw forward during sleep, reducing sleep apnea and all the other problems that the cessation of breathing at night can cause. I’ve been in private practice in Saddleback Valley since 1980 when I got out of the Navy. When the situation arises that we need a specialist, like an oral surgeon for wisdom extraction, or endodontists (root canal specialists), or periodontists (gum specialists) to save jeopardized teeth, I’m on a “first-name” basis with the best in all of those fields, who are all close by. We’re all living longer, and we’ll need our teeth longer. So it is my pleasure to have all of these good things we can do to make that happen. It’s better to have teeth left at the end of your life, rather than life left at the end of your teeth. “THE MIDTOWN MEN”... FOUR SINGING SENSATIONS FROM THE ORIGINAL CAST OF “JERSEY BOYS CLOSE PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S 2012-13 POPS SEASON Proclaimed by The Calgary Sun to be “ambassadors of the ’60s,” the four stars of The Midtown Men bring their Broadway talent, top-shelf choreography and unique onstage chemistry to Pacific Symphony for the final concert of the 2012-13 Pops season, led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman. Taking the world by storm as the original cast of the jukebox musical and Broadway hit “Jersey Boys,” the talented quartet reunites as The Midtown Men to perform favorite 1960s hits from not only The Four Seasons, but also The Beatles, Motown and more, all backed by the lush sounds of the full symphony orchestra. Tony Award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony Award-nominee J. Robert Spencer share their oldschool singing style in a one-of-akind concert experience celebrating the music that defined the ’60s. The concert takes place Thursday through Saturday, June 13-15, at 8 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Tickets are $35-$185; for more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. “It will be exciting to have these four performers on our stage after doing ‘Jersey Boys’ together on Broadway,” says Maestro Kaufman. “And having Pacific Symphony right behind them will be an amazing experience for all of us as well.” During their time in the mega-hit musical “Jersey Boys,” these four artists shared the stage for more than 1,000 performances and delighted television audiences with appearances on “Today,” “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve.” Since forming in 2007, The Midtown Men have reached a national audience performing coast to coast in 77 cities this season. Keeping the music of the ’60s alive and fresh, their self-titled debut album “The Midtown Men: Sixties Hits” was met with critical acclaim and garnered five-star album reviews across iTunes. Many of the songs from this hit album are performed in the evening’s concert including such iconic 1960s singles as, “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Up on the Roof” and “Time of the Season.” Other exciting highlights include “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “California Dreamin’” and “Happy Together.” “The music of the ’60s takes us back to a simpler, more innocent time,” says Kaufman. “The melodies are wonderful, and the lyrics are
all about love. It’s a chance to get away from our stress-filled world of today and have a great time listening to some of America’s most memorable songs. It’s all about fun! “In the ’60s, singers were starting to use more than just a rhythm section on their recordings,” he continues. “Strings, woodwinds, harps... these all became part of the background in some of the most memorable songs ever recorded. Having these arrangements played by Pacific Symphony will make the instrumental sounds even more vivid and wonderful.” Christian Hoff won a Tony Award for his performance as Tommy DeVito in “Jersey Boys,” as well as a Drama Desk Award, a Drama League Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination. He was named “The Master of Mimicry” by Entertainment Weekly. His voice-over accomplishments have earned him notable success including Foreword Magazine’s 2008 Audio Book of The Year, when his voicing of over 200 characters surpassed the audio book world record. As the voice of Richie Rich in the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series, his voice-over career was launched and continues today with numerous audio books, television and radio campaigns. Theatrical highlights include the roles of Frank-n-Furter in the Los Angeles production of “The Rocky Horror Show,” King Herod in the national revival tour of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Governor Hugh Dorsey in the Los Angeles revival of “Parade,” George M. Cohan in “George M!,” Will Rogers in “The Will Rogers Follies,” Huck in “Big River,” and his Broadway debut in the Tony Award and Grammy Award-winning “The Who’s Tommy.” Michael Longoria is best known for his star turn on Broadway as Frankie Valli in “Jersey Boys.” He made his Broadway debut in the smash hit musical “Hairspray” (2003 Tony Award for Best Musical), and later created the role of Joey in the original Broadway cast of “Jersey Boys” before taking over the role of Frankie Valli. This took his career to new heights beginning with a solo performance for hundreds of thousands of fans in Times Square for “Broadway on Broadway.” He went on to numerous
performances on television, including Broadway “Under the Stars: A Tribute to Harold Prince,” The U.S. Open and “America’s Got Talent” season nine finale with Susan Boyle and Shakira. His journey recently led him back to Atlantic City with feature performances in “That’s Life!” with Joe Piscopo at Caesar’s. As a singersongwriter, Longoria has shared his one-of-a-kind talent at such venues as New York City’s CB’s Gallery, Cutting Room, Joe’s Pub, The Knitting Factory and Caroline’s on Broadway. Daniel Reichard is best known for his portrayal of original Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio in the boxoffice smash “Jersey Boys,” a role he originated both on Broadway and in the La Jolla Playhouse premiere. He followed “Jersey Boys” with a critically acclaimed performance as the title character in Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide” at the New York City Opera. His talent paved the way to starring roles in New York City and beyond, including his portrayal of artist/ social activist Keith Haring in “Radiant Baby” at Joe Papp’s Public Theater; “Man in The Thing About Men”; and Emmet in the world premiere of the musical version of Jim Henson’s “Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas” at the Goodspeed Opera House. As a concert singer, Reichard has had sold-out engagements at New York City’s Joe’s Pub, Metropolitan Room and Ars Nova. Other concert appearances include Symphony Space, The Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, BB Kings, Town Hall, Firebird and the Cutting Room. He can be seen as Frankie in the 2009 film version of the hit musical comedy “Forever Plaid.” J. Robert Spencer is a Tony Awardnominated actor, independent film director, producer and writer. In 2004, he originated the role of Nick Massi in “Jersey Boys,” and in 2008, he originated the role of Dan Goodman in the critically acclaimed Broadway production of “Next To Normal,” and nominated for the
Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actor and for a 2008-09 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. In 2004, Spencer appeared as a psychopathic killer in the independent feature film “Night of the Dog.” The role earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Smmash Film Festival, and the film won Audience Awards for best feature film at Palm Beach, Santa Barbara, Smmash and PBIFF film festivals. In 2005, he began his independent film company, 7 Spencer Productions, for which he produced his first feature, “Farm Girl in New York.” The film was featured on “Today” and selected for the Sacramento International Film Festival (nominated for Best Comedy and Best Actress), Big Apple, Atlanta Film, Buffalo Niagara and the Seattle True Independent film festivals. As the Pops season comes to a close, Kaufman reflects: “It’s been a great season of music and terrific performers, many who have made their Pacific Symphony Pops debut. Most of all, it’s been another season where our audiences have been able to experience the awesome talents of our orchestra. I’m sure that anyone who heard the orchestra in concert this past season is already looking forward to the coming season, and more exciting and superb performances from one of America’s great orchestras, Pacific Symphony.” The Symphony’s 2013-14 Pops season includes Michael Cavanagh singing songs of Elton John and more, Christmas with LeAnn Rimes, Valentine’s Day with Burt Bacharach, Michael McDonald, Cirque de la Symphonie and rock band America, plus “Night at the Copa” featuring guests to be announced. Subscriptions are on sale now; single tickets are available August 18. “The Midtown Men” are not a performance of or affiliated with the show ‘Jersey Boys.’”

This Summer, Drink Pink! By David White With Memorial Day behind us, summer has officially arrived. This means more time outside, and consequently, a different cocktail menu. For lazy days by the pool or at the beach, it’s hard to beat a piña colada, margarita, or other tropical drink. When enjoying a hot dog or hamburger at a barbeque, beer is the obvious choice. For wine drinkers, finding the perfect summertime match can be daunting. When lounging on the deck or patio, red wine can seem too heavy. And sometimes, that simple white wine is just, well, too simple. That’s why it’s hard to beat a crisp rosé when the weather is warm. It’s easy to dismiss pink wine. After all, most Americans associate rosé with cheap, sweet “blush” wines, like Sutter Home’s white Zinfandel. This style of wine traces its roots to the early 1970s. Back then, demand for white wine outpaced supply, so many California winemakers started producing white wine from red grapes, taking advantage of the fact that even red grapes give off white juice. In 1975, the winemaker at Sutter Home, Bob Trinchero, had a problem while making his white Zinfandel. A portion of the wine experienced a “stuck
fermentation,” meaning the yeast died before all the sugar had converted into alcohol. Rather than “fix” the wine by adding more yeast, Trinchero decided to let it sit for two weeks. When he revisited the wine, he knew it would be a hit -- and Sutter Home’s modern-day white Zinfandel was born. Countless imitators would soon follow. This style of pink wine remains quite popular and it will always have fans. More often than not, though, white Zinfandel and other blush wines are just too sweet. Many taste more like Kool-Aid or strawberry fruit punch than wine. True rosés are bone dry, textured, and refreshing. And they can be just as complex and food friendly as traditional wines. True rosés are made in one of two ways. In the first method, the winemaker crushes red wine grapes and leaves the juice in contact with the skin for a brief period, typically one or two days. She then discards the skins, allowing the juice to finish fermentation on its own. Thanks to the short period of skin contact, the wine retains some color. Here, rosé is the only goal. In the second method, rosé is a byproduct of red wine fermentation. Red wine obtains color, tannin, struc-
ture, and flavors from grape skins. If a winemaker wants to increase the skin-to-juice ratio during fermentation, she can simply remove some juice at an early stage. This pink juice can be fermented separately to create rosé. This method is known as saignée. True rosés have been a part of life in France for centuries. In the southeastern part of the country, residents and visitors alike have long recognized the splendor of pairing rosé with warm weather and coastal cuisine. France remains the source of many fantastic rosés - great examples can be found in Bandol, Tavel, Sancerre, and many other regions. When looking for French rosés, it’s best to look for reliable importers, like Kermit Lynch, Beaune Imports, Weygandt-Metzler, and Robert Kacher. All four bring in a number of knockout wines. Plenty of delightful pink wines come from outside France, as well. Across the world, more and more producers are making top-notch, authentic rosés. In the United States, some producers to look for include Alexander Valley Vineyards, which makes a splendid rosé of Sangiovese, Copain, and Ponzi. Another favorite is made by Mulderbosch in South Africa. The world is still awash in bad rosés,
of course. It’s still quite easy to accidently wind up with a bottle that’s too heavy, alcoholic, or sweet. So if your local wine shop offers tastings, be sure to stop in when rosés are open - you might find a crisp, refreshing wine that’s worth stocking up on. After all, pink wine is the perfect accompaniment to summer. So why not grab a case? David White, a wine writer, is the founder and editor of Terroirist.com. His columns are housed at Wines.com, the fastest growing wine portal on the Internet.
A Beach Book for Wine Enthusiasts HAPPY GRAPES
By David White Rarely do wine enthusiasts have a summertime page-turner. There was Sideways, of course, the Pinotdrenched novel by Rex Pickett that became a blockbuster movie, but that hit bookstores nearly ten years ago. Over the past decade, many writers have tried to replicate the success of Sideways with wine-inspired fiction. But the strongest narratives have been nonfiction -- books like Benjamin Wallace’s The Billionaire’s Vinegar, which exposes the seedy underbelly of wine auctions, and Evan Dawson’s Summer in a Glass, which chronicles the history of the Finger Lakes wine region. Fortunately, oenophiles once Page 16
again have a work of fiction that’s perfect for the beach: James Conaway’s Nose, released this spring by Thomas Dunne Books. If Conaway’s name sounds familiar, that’s because he’s been writing for more than 40 years. An essayist for National Geographic Traveler, Conaway is best known in wine circles for Napa: The Story of an American Eden, released in 1990, and his 2002 follow-up, The Far Side of Eden. Both works -- juicy, social histories of America’s top winegrowing locale -- garnered much acclaim. At the center of Conway’s foray into fiction is Clyde Craven-Jones, a transplanted Briton who has become the world’s most powerful wine critic. From his adopted home in northern California, Craven-Jones -- known as “CJ” -- can move markets with the scores he publishes in his eponymous newsletter. So producers everywhere try to imitate “the Craven-Jones style” by producing big, boozy wines. (Without question, this character is loosely based on Robert M. Parker, Jr.) Early in the novel, CJ sits for a routine tasting of nine different bottles of local Cabernet Sauvignon. Included
The Coto de Caza News
in the blind tasting is a shiner -- an unlabeled bottle that mysteriously ended up on CJ’s doorstep. That shiner isn’t just the best in the lineup -- it’s the best California wine CJ has ever tasted. So he gives it a perfect score, an award he’s never bestowed upon a California wine. An investigation promptly begins, spearheaded by CJ’s wife, Claire. In Claire’s quest to identify the wine, readers meet a collection of misfits, villains, and unlikely heroes. Helping Claire is Les Breeden, an unemployed journalist who decides to advertise himself as a private investigator after losing his job at the local newspaper. He spends virtually all his free time at the local dive bar, a wine geeks’ paradise called Glass Act. As the investigation unfolds, readers become well acquainted with two others: Jerome Hutt, a developerturned-winery-owner whose wines are as opulent as his lifestyle; and Cotton Harrell, an ecologist-turnedwinemaker who is dedicated to biodynamic farming. Like the cheerleader and the band geek in a classic high school drama, these men serve as foils to one an-
other. Hutt is the symbol of all that’s wrong with California’s “cult” wines and Harrell represents all that’s pure about viniculture. The book hints at some serious issues, from the madness of wine ratings and the changing media landscape to the alcoholism and class divisions that quietly exist in every winemaking region. But at its heart, Nose is a straightforward mystery novel. Predictable, to be sure, but with enough twists and turns it’s nearly impossible to put down.

Presented by Hoag, the Symphony’s 2013 Summer Festival begins with the annual “July 4 Extravaganza,” featuring the heartfelt classics of Neil Diamond and a stunning fireworks finale. Patrons find themselves transported to another galaxy for “The Planets,” featuring guest conductor Case Scaglione and guest violinist Caroline Goulding, who performs Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. Then, get ready to rock-and-roll with J.T. & Friends in “Roll Over, Beethoven,” featuring chart-toppers from the past four centuries. And music from some of cinema’s most-treasured family films comes alive in “Pixar in Concert,” featuring music and video from “Toy Story,” “The Incredibles,” “Brave” and more! The Symphony concludes the season with “Tchaikovsky Spectacular,” featuring breathtaking cannons and fireworks during the “1812 Overture.” Plus, new this year: a special addon concert, “Video Games Live,” takes place Wednesday, July 17, at 8 p.m. Five-concert subscriptions range from $95-$465, with luxury season packages also available. Single tickets are $25-$99 and go on sale June 2. Gates open at 6 p.m. for picnicking at all concerts except Sunday, Aug. 4, when they open at 5:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony. org. Summer Festival 2013 is made possible by supporting sponsor, Orange County Register; major sponsor, Mercedes Benz; plus, video images are provided by Vizio. Media sponsors include K-Earth 101, KPCC, KUSC and PBS SoCal. “I always look forward to our summer series at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater,” says Music Director Carl St.Clair. “I get to share vibrant music with our gracious audience and wonderful orchestra; combine that with the beautiful Southern California night sky and you have the perfect combination! It’s a wonderfully unique atmosphere and the perfect setting for a concert.” It’s not just Caroline that’s sweet! The Symphony, led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman, opens the summer season with a
“July 4 Extravaganza,” featuring San Francisco-based Super Diamond, a rock-and-roll band that interprets Neil Diamond’s addictive, feel-good hits alongside the orchestra. Favorite Diamond chart-toppers such as “Sweet Caroline,” “Heartlight,” “Song Sung Blue,” “America” and other classics that have been delighting generations of Americans for years fill the amphitheater with a festive holiday spirit. The concert takes place on Thursday, July 4, at 8 p.m., and includes patriotic favorites, a salute to the U.S. armed forces and a jaw-dropping fireworks finale that pays homage to the nation’s troops and our nation’s history. “As citizens of the U.S.A., the Fourth of July is our annual opportunity to come together to celebrate our beloved country with music,” says Maestro Kaufman. “Each year on our July Fourth concert, we bring our audience the sounds of musical America. This year, we’ll remember the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg with the Oscar-nominated music of John Williams from ‘Lincoln,’ as well as Randy Edelman’s stirring music from the film ‘Gettysburg.’ I am anticipating a memorable musical experience for not only our audience, but for the musicians and most certainly for the conductor (aka, yours truly).” Blast off! The Symphony takes concertgoers on a journey to the far reaches of the solar system for “The Planets,” a concert filled with music inspired by the galaxy itself. This intergalactic multimedia event includes high-definition images from the Hubble Space Telescope projected on the big screen above the stage, as the Symphony performs Gustav Holst’s invigorating “The Planets.” Scaglione joins the Symphony as the concert’s guest conductor along with guest violinist Goulding, who plays Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. Scaglione currently serves as the assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic and in 2011, was the recipient of the Conductor’s Prize by the Solti Foundation U.S.—an esteemed honor that has only been awarded three times in the foundation’s history. A vivacious violinist, Goulding has received considerable recognition for her musical talent. In 2009, she won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, received the Helen Armstrong Violin Fellowship and received a Grammy nomination for her debut recording. She was also the recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2011. This concert takes place Saturday, July 13, at 8 p.m.
Attention gamers! In a unique and special summer event, the Symphony presents “Video Games Live,” a concert celebrating the exciting collaborations of music, art and interactive technology that make up the video game industry. With liveaction visuals, synchronized lighting, exclusive video footage, soloists and electronic percussionists—plus the powerful sound of the full symphony orchestra—it’s an explosion of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. This concert features music and video from the most popular video games of all time, including “Diablo,” “Halo,” “Guitar Hero” and “Warcraft,” as well as the nostalgic classics from yesteryear such as “Frogger,” “Mario,” “Sonic,” “Zelda” and more! Plus, selected audience members are chosen to come up on stage and play games while the orchestra performs. Taking place Wednesday, July 17, at 8 p.m., tickets are sold separately ($25-$65), not as part of the Summer Festival package. Get ready to dance! Join the Symphony, Maestro St.Clair and J.T. & Friends for a night that is sure to prove widely entertaining. “Roll Over, Beethoven” juxtaposes some of the most popular works by Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky with rockand-roll hits from the 1940s to today. Joining the orchestra onstage is J.T. & Friends—a 46-musician band led by John Tu of Kingston Technology—which has brought down the house at the Symphony’s Gala for the past three years with its myriad of fun-loving songs by the Temptations, Elvis, Rod Stewart, Gloria Gaynor and more! Now the band joins the orchestra onstage for a powerhouse of sound and an evening that is sure to have the audience dancing in their seats! “This is going to be a great night at Verizon,” says St.Clair. “I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday evening than listening to classics by the masters and the adored hits of rock-and-roll. It’s the perfect fusion
of the two genres and it’s definitely going to be a great time.” The concert takes place Sunday, Aug. 4, at 7:30 p.m. Gates open early at 5:30 p.m. Family night! Beloved children’s films and music come together for the Symphony’s presentation of “Pixar in Concert,” on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 8 p.m. The orchestra brings to life the cherished musical moments of such popular and captivating films as “Up,” “Brave,” “Cars,” “Wall-E” and many more. While the Symphony fills the amphitheater with music from the film scores, scenes from the movies play on a big screen overhead, giving concertgoers a truly unique multi-media experience. Award-winning conductor Sarah Hicks joins the Symphony as a guest, bringing her ingenious talent and artistry to the stage. Hicks graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in composition. She has received numerous prestigious awards, among them the Doris Cohen Levy Prize for conducting and the Thomas Hoopes Prize for composition, both from Harvard University. This presentation is licensed by Disney Concert Library © Disney/Pixar. End summer with a magnificent bang! The Summer Festival series concludes its season on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 8 p.m., with “Tchaikovsky Spectacular.” Filled with cannons, fireworks and thundering scores, this concert is the perfect culmination to the festival’s season and a fantastic way to salute summer’s end. Led by St.Clair, the program includes Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 4” and “1812 Overture.” The concert also features the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition medalist. “This concert serves as both a farewell and a salutation,” says St.Clair. “While we bid adieu to summer, we greet the approaching fall season with a hearty hello. It’s a marvelous way to celebrate both the ending and beginning of two wonderful seasons.”

In the mood for Romance? Bring your Sweetheart to Trabuco Oaks Steakhouse and Watch the Sparks Fly! Love is in the air and you don’t have to wait for Valentine’s Day to enjoy the excitement Local Legend; Trabuco Oaks Steakhouse -A Presidential Favorite and Home of Cowboy Cuisine The legendary Trabuco Oaks steakhouse restaurant is known for its 2 pound cowboy steak. Juicy, and tender, and in fact is really more than most people can eat in a single sitting, it is one of the hallmarks of the menu at Trabuco Oaks steakhouse. It is well worth the drive down the winding road to Live Oak Canyon near Rancho Santa Margarita to experience this picturesque eating establishment. For the last 45 years, it has been a well-kept secret among Canyon residents and now is becoming more popular with residents of Coto de Caza, Ladera Ranch, and Mission Viejo. Great food is only the start of the Trabuco Oaks legend; their famous steaks have attracted a growing stream of celebrities.Once you arrive, take a moment to look at all of the fabulous pictures lining the walls of the Trabuco Oaks steakhouse. There you will see photographs of famous people such as Richard Nixon, who dined here while he was vice president of the United States, and later as president. He loved to sneak away and have the Secret Service Dr. him down here from the western White House which was then located in San Clemente. In addition to President Nixon, David Hardman, General William Lyon, Kelly Lang, Santa Margarita Catholic High and USC football stars Vince Ferragamo, Carson Palmer (now a NFL Quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals) You may notice that some of the celebrities in the photographs have their ties cut off at half mast. The owners used to take a large scissors and cut off people's ties to discourage people from wearing them as they thought their diners should be more relaxed. In fact you will see a large display of men's ties chopped off and hung from the rafters of the Trabuco Oaks steakhouse. Perhaps most diners don't wear their ties anymore, as the Coto de Caza News reviewer didn't see anyone losing their ties when we were there to review the restaurant. Dori Nordeck –Odenath, charming owner the Trabuco Oaks steakhouse says that she loves the restaurant business and that her customers are like her family and all the staff is extremely devoted to her and that their loyalty translates into energy and enthusiasm. The steak house customers seem to relate to the rustic atmosphere where a tree actually grows through the center of the dining room. First time diners should remember to take the map as a restaurant is a little bit off the beaten path. Trabuco Oaks steakhouse menu items are all hearty examples of western cuisine. The mesquite fired charcoal barbeque pit starts to heat up early in the day and by dinnertime the savory smells of sizzling sirloin drift over the canyon filling the evening air with excitement.

While their signature 32 ounce ‘Cowboy’ top sirloin is king of the house, Trabuco Oaks steakhouse has a magnificent array of steaks including the Ponderosa 16 ounce Porterhouse, Another 16 ouncer ‘Cowpoke’ is the top sirloin cut. The Ramrod 12 ounce top sirloin is well marbled and hand selected. Finally, the ‘Li’l Wrangler at 8 ounces is perfect for smaller appetites and younger diners. Trabuco Oaks steakhouse is famous as well for its barbeque beef ribs with their heavenly barbeque sauce slathered all over or served on the side, with a skillet of mushrooms sizzling in a sauce of butter and sherry with just the right touch of chopped bell peppers, fresh green onions. The Zucchini skillet side dish is both unusual and excellent with its delightful covering of melted mozzarella cheese. Trabuco Oaks steakhouse mesquite fired barbeque pit adds that special smoky flavor to the baked potatoes and western baked beans found nowhere else. Mesquite grilled chicken marinated with fresh herbs and spices is an exceptional variation. Trabuco Oaks steakhouse also serves lightly battered fresh fish and French fries. Add their popular hamburgers, spaghetti and garlic bread to the menu and the whole family will quickly find their favorite. If you still have room for dessert, order the Trabuco Oaks steakhouse ‘Gizmo’. A surprise concoction of cherry filling wrapped in a flour tortilla and deep fried, topped with whipped cream and hot cherry sauce. A full bar with a hearty wine cellar compliments superb menu and attentive service by people who seem interested in making your dining experience a happy one.

SUMMER 2013 EXHIBITIONS AT LAGUNA ART MUSEUM This summer, Laguna Art Museum opens three new exhibitions to the public: Faux Real (on display June 2-September 29); Sea Change: Tanya Aguiñiga’s Bluebelt Forest (on display June 2, 2013-May 18, 2014); and ex•pose: beatriz da costa (on display June 2-September 29). The museum’s current exhibition John Mason: Blue Wall is on display through October 13. FAUX REAL June 2-September 29 Faux Real is a group exhibition curated by Laguna Art Museum’s Curator of Contemporary Art Grace Kook-Anderson, which features installation artists and sculptors who recreate reality with a twist, using off-beat materials and in most cases a keen sense of humor. The results are playful, intriguing, and highly entertaining. The participating artists re-imagine reality with their work. They begin with familiar subjects: food, furniture, and knick-knacks that occupy the spaces of many homes, and recreate them with unconventional and often surprising materials. The pieces highlight mundane everyday objects often passed over without a second thought, bringing into focus the exercise of seeing, the processes of construction, and the broad utility of materials. While often humorous in their execution, the included artwork offers social and political critique of American culture and the mass culture of consumerism. Artists featured in the exhibition include: Michael Arcega, Sandow Birk, Libby Black, Julie Bozzi, Amy Caterina, Lauren DiCioccio, Daniel Douke, Ala Ebtekar, Cheryl Ekstrom, David Gilhooly, Kim MacConnel, Matthias Merkel Hess, Jean Lowe, Gifford Myers, Kaz Oshiro, Elyse Pignolet, Walter Robinson, Richard Shaw, and Stephanie Syjuco. The exhibition will be on display in the museum’s main level galleries. SEA CHANGE: TANYA AGUIÑIGA’S BLUEBELT FOREST June 2, 2013-May 18, 2014 This summer the museum opens a site-specific installation along the same lines as Faux Real by Los Angeles artist Tanya Aguiñiga in its upper level gallery. Aguiñiga will transform the space into a forest of kelp, corals, barnacles, and other fantastic creatures that one would typically find under the sea just off the coast of Laguna Beach. Every object Page 24
in the exhibition will be hand-made by the artist and her assistants, using a variety of materials and textiles. By recreating these organic elements using unexpected, manmade materials, Aguiñiga enables the viewer to experience them anew. In addition to looking, visitors will also be able to explore the exhibition through touching it, thereby allowing for a truly immersive encounter. Aguiñiga works at the intersection of furniture design, craft making, and fine art. The ability to successfully navigate between different worlds is something that she attributes to having grown up in the border area of Tijuana and San Diego, where she had to cross the border and move between cultures on a daily basis throughout her childhood. Just as Aguiñiga has been doing in her personal life, she inhabits more than one world through her work. Aguiñiga (b.1978) received her BA in Furniture Design from San Diego State University and her MFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Among the awards she has received are United States Artists Fellow and USA Target Fellow in Crafts and Traditional Arts. She has also been involved in a numerous community empowerment projects, including the Border Art Workshop (BAW/TAF), a collaborative of artists from Mexico and the U.S. EX·POSE: BEATRIZ DA COSTA June 2-September 29 The fourth exhibition in Laguna Art Museum’s ex·pose series features the most recent project by the late Beatriz da Costa. Dying for the Other, a triptych video installation, offers a parallel consideration of mice used in breast cancer research set alongside scenes from the artist’s own life. Da Costa suffered from breast cancer and underwent intense medical treatment to combat the disease. In doing so, the artist covers an uncomfortable and sticky part of our collective social consciousness—pursuing the advancement of science and medicine, but doing so at the sacrifice of other “less intelligent” beings. Set alongside Dying for the Other is da Costa’s Anti-Cancer Survival Kit, a friendly and interactive approach to a somewhat taboo social subject. The kit provides information for people to take the resources and knowledge home with them. Some of the components of the kit include a database of comprehensive research; a coffee-table style illustrated book providing guidelines for anti-cancer approaches;

SEA CHANGE: TANYA AGUIÑIGA’S BLUEBELT FOREST games designed for touch-screen mobile devices; and information on creating an anti-cancer, DIY garden. Bringing together scholars and artists from many disciplines, these set of supplies and collected knowledge are meant for those living with cancer, while also serving as tools for their loved ones. “It’s the kind of kit I wish somebody would have given me as a gift, when I was first diagnosed three years ago,” da Costa says about initiating the project. She had dealt with the disease in different manifestations since diagnosed with her first cancer at age fourteen. Da Costa has worked as a multidisciplinary artist exploring human impact on the world around us—promoting an awareness of the inextricable ways in which active and passive human action affects our environment. Her work as an
educator (she was the Associate Professor of Studio Art, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine) was indicative of her multidisciplinary tact in promoting social awareness, fusing the impact of raw data and science with appeals to emotional sensibilities. After battling the illness for so long, da Costa passed away at age 38 on December 27, 2012. ex·pose is a contemporary art program curated by Grace KookAnderson, curator of contemporary art at Laguna Art Museum. Focusing on one emerging or mid-career artist at a time, the program encourages the development of new projects and an immersive involvement with the museum’s Young Artists Society Gallery program. ex·pose aims to present a diverse range of artists working in all mediums.

T h e B o w e n T e a m : H i t t i ng i t O u t o f t h e Pa r k Local remax agents win number one in California, number eight in united states
Tamara Young, Ken Bowen, Gail Liniger (Owner of Re/max), Donnie Bowen, Christina Bowen, Stacie Brick
By Ted Reckas Ken Bowen could hardly believe it as he walked across the stage at the Re/ Max International Awards at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. His little family firm, The Bowen Team had just won again, against teams with five times the staff. The Bowen Team was the number one team in California, and number eight in the US. He looked around at the 10,000 attendees of the black tie affair, then looked up at the sky, in memory of his father and founder of The Bowen Team, Don. “We were recognized among teams with 30 agents. We’re three agents and two assistants. When Ken went up to receive the award and pointed up to the sky in tribute to our father, that was an emotional experience for the whole team,” said Don’s son, Donnie. Don Bowen passed away in November, after building one of the most successful real estate brokerages in the country, which his sons Ken and Donnie, and daughter Christina are now leading to new heights. Don and Ken co-founded the firm in 1989 when they saw a bright future in the communities of Coto de Caza, Rancho Santa Margarita and Ladera Ranch, which were still under the real estate radar. They immersed themselves in the communities and steadily built the Bowen brand into a powerhouse, albeit a friendly one with a family feel. That’s kind of their secret: when you do business with them you feel like part of the family. “Our dad really groomed us with the work ethic it requires to be a solid real estate agent: commitment, integrity, the mentality that the job isn’t completed until clients are completely satisfied,” said Donnie “He did anything for them. Spending 12 hours a day, sometimes 7 days a week. Even toward the later part of his career, he still had that work ethic. He was a major pillar in our community. He left big shoes to fill, and we’ve been succeeding in that.” Indeed. The Bowen team has doubled their business over the last two years, and Ken said, “Our goals for 2012 were 110 transactions and we did 105. Our goal this year is to do 150 transactions, so grow our business by 50%. We’re ahead of schedule right now.” How does a team of just five people post that kind of success? “We constantly reinvest in our business, from acquiring our own Re/max
franchise several years ago, to investing in our community, and from reaching new marketing tools to benefit our clients” said Ken. Donnie added, “We really work with our hearts. We dig in and trouble shoot and make sure our clients’ needs are taken care of. We’re involved in the community, with schools and charities. We’ve built it one client at a time.” So what’s next for The Bowen Team? Growth. Ken: “We’ve recently hired a genius who handles our web presence, and we’ve hired two more agents.” Donnie elaborates, “We’re expanding our territory to include Ladera Ranch, Covenant Hills and the coastal communities. I live in Laguna Beach, and one of our new agents is in San Clemente, so that opens up our marketplace. But we’re not losing sight of the ethics that built our company. We will always have that mom and pop feel.” The team was also inducted into the Circle of Legends Club, an honor reserved for Re/Max agents who have produced more than $10M in gross commission for ten years consecutively. At the time only 144 agents worldwide have pulled this off. The Bowen Team was number 52. Stacie Brick, Executive Assistant, said, “We were at a staff meeting when I told them what they had won. They said what is that? They didn’t even know what it was because they’re so focused on their clients instead of awards and recognition.”
