The history of father ’s day and any traditional present to fathers.
Father’s Day was founded in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd. Its first celebration was in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis’ Mother’s Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a
similar holiday honoring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, the pastors hadn’t enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June. It didn’t have much success initially. In the 1920s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she was studying in the Art Institute
55+ APARTMENT HOMES
of Chicago, and it faded into relative obscurity, even in Spokane. In the 1930s Dodd returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at a national level. She had the help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes,
Since 1938 she had the help of the Father’s Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak in a Father’s Day celebration and wanted to make it official, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized. US President Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed by the nation, but stopped short of issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress. In 1957, Maine Senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus “[singling] out just one of our two parents”. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

5 steps to the perfect fishing trip with dad When you were a kid and needed to learn something new, you went to Dad, right? He’s the one who taught you how to ride a bike and drive a car. He’s also the one who taught you how to bait your hook for the first time. You’ve never forgotten these skills and now is a great time to say thank you to the man who helped you learn and grow by taking him out for a day of fishing. You might even teach him a thing or two. Whether it’s for Father’s Day or his birthday, this is a great time of year to surprise him with can’t-miss gifts he’ll enjoy while sharing his favorite pastime with you. So don’t delay. The weather’s great and the boat is ready. Make the most of it with this list of tips guaranteed to show Dad a fishing trip he won’t forget. * Surprise him with the perfect invitation. If your dad can’t say no to helping with a project, surprising him with a fishing trip will be easy. Ask for his help on something you can’t do yourself. You can even poke at him about how hard the project will be, just don’t go too far or he won’t show up. And then, when he arrives, show him the car packed and ready to hit his favorite honey hole. He’ll be so happy he may just forgive you for the trick. * Plan to the last detail. On a good fishing trip, the drive is half the fun, so don’t race through it. Take Dad to his favorite restaurant for breakfast, play his favorite tunes in the car and
have a steaming cup of his favorite coffee waiting for him when you hit the open road. * Surprise him with the right gear. Help dear old Dad up his angling acumen by giving a few thoughtful gifts throughout the day. Start the surprise by setting up his favorite rod and reel, before picking him up, with Sufix 832 Advanced Superline. A go-to fishing line for the world’s best anglers, this braided line has the strength and durability to ward against line breaks and will ensure Dad’s next big catch makes it all the way to the boat. And at the end of this line you can tie on the dynamic Rapala Ripstop. An innovative new lure, the bait features a unique hard-plastic-boot tail that creates a hard-rolling, slashing action to mimic live-minnow movement, perfect for drawing plenty of attention. Then after a morning of catching fish on the water, hand Dad the Rapala Lithium
Ion Cordless Fillet to make quick work of even the most intimidating filleting chore. Its lithium-ion battery provides continuous, full-power operation for 80 minutes, and will have the two of you enjoying a delicious shore lunch in no time. * Cap the day off right. When the sun starts to set and the day of fishing is finally done, cap the day off with a drink at his favorite spot or sit around the fire telling stories. Just don’t be surprised if the size of Dad’s catch has grown considerably by then - it is a fish story after all. * Sit back and enjoy the ride. All of your planning has come to make this day as special for you as it is for your father, so don’t miss a moment of it. Put the phone away and unplug while engaging in conversation. You may just learn a thing or two about your dad that you never knew before and the memories you’ll get from your trip together will last a lifetime. - (BPT)
My father used to say that it’s never too late to do anything you wanted to do. And he said, ‘You never know what you can accomplish until you try. ~ Michael Jordan

El k s Host Adult Transition Program Dance
By Mike Klinger The Mission Viejo Saddleback Valley Elks 2444 and the Charity Committee hosted the Adult Transition Program (ATP) Annual Dance that saw over 150 young citizens, family, friends and teachers strutting-their-stuff on the dancefloor. Elk members Greg Morgan and Les Stipek organized the annual event along with another successful event, Best Buddies, earlier this year. The lodge was filled with DJ sounds and bright lights as the young adults danced to their hearts content, then took a break to dine on pizza and wonderful desserts. Exalted Ruler Mike Klinger spoke with Dee Ann Hindman, Education Specialist Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD), and Clint Collins, Principal of the ATP Program, CLASS Program and the Bridges Community Day School about the dance. “We are so proud to be associated with the Elks and everything they do for the community” stated Collins. ER Klinger mentioned, “The motto this year is Focused on Elkdom, reaching out to our community of special needs young citizens and to bring drug awareness to the forefront. And thanks to all the teachers that help guide these students to be productive citizens”. The mission of the Adult Transition Program (ATP) is to develop young adults with special needs into positive,

Think Together Raises $375,000 An d C e l e b r a t e s 2 1 Y e a r s
Matt and Jackie Brunwin
More than 300 community and business leaders came together to celebrate Think Together’s annual “Raise a Hand” event at [AV] Irvine. They raised $375,000 to benefit the organization’s programs that change the odds for children and youth from low-income families. The celebration featured a “Face of the Future” college scholarship award given to two students who have worked hard to beat the odds, and a “Champion of Change” award, honoring an individual who is changing the odds for kids. Guests also had the opportunity to interact with students in “a day in the life” program showcases. Folks settled in for a wonderful dinner prior to the program starting – consisting of Watermelon and Feta Salad with Balsamic Glaze for starters. Next came a plate of Filet Mignon and Chilean Sea Bass Duo, a choice filet mignon with cremini mushroom and bourbon demi-glaze pan-seared Chilean sea bass with Meyer lemon and roasted shallot butter truffle with smashed Yukon gold potatoes accompanied with fresh spring asparagus. For dessert, a Chocolate Reflection Cake had everyone excited as this dark chocolate cake had a rich chocolate mousse filling with dark chocolate glaze and raspberry coulis – decadent! There was a quick live auction where attendees were privy to some great items. First up for grabs - a three night/three-bedroom villa golf & spa escape at the Resort at Pelican Hill; then there was a Tequila tasting and prix fix dinner for 10 in the private cellar at Gabbi’s Mexican kitchen; someone Caleb Remington and Tiffany Au walked away with a private tour and tasting for 6 at Joseph Phelps vineyards; and lastly, a bidder’s choice - ticket exchange: one lucky winning bidder has choice of two tickets to a major sporting event in 2018. Opportunities typically include: Golf US Masters Tournament, NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament, NFL Super Bowl, or US Open Tennis. Package included a $2,000 American Express gift card which can be used toward travel and lodging. When the program began, awards were given out with the “Face of the Future” college scholarship award presented to Ana Lua Martel and Daniella Manzanares. Martel, a Think Together student, Class of 2018 is a La Puente resident and a senior at Bassett High School. She has participated in Think Together’s programs for 8 years and was accepted to six California universities. She plans to obtain her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and continue to law school after college. Martel’s goal is to become an immigration lawyer to better serve the Latino community and help families stay together. Manzanares, also a Think Together student, Class of 2018 is a Costa Mesa resident and a senior at Pacifica Christian High School in Newport Beach. She has participated in Think Together’s programs since kindergarten at the Shalimar Learning Center. In the fall, she will be attending one of the nine universities she applied to, where she plans to major in Business and Leo Vanwarnerdam with Sterling minor in Spanish. Manzanares plans to pay it forward during college and Joyce Lee with Eunice Sun Cates after by inspiring others, just as she was inspired by the Think Together staff at Shalimar. The “Champion of Change” award was presented to Gudiel Crosthwaite, EdD, Superintendent, Lynwood School District, and Paul Gothold, EdD, Retired Superintendent, Lynwood School District. They both helped champion the revitalization of Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD) and the lives of families in the community through Principal’s Exchange, in partnership with Think Together. “We are beyond grateful to our dedicated donors and supporters who believe in our goal of educational equity and excellence for all kids,” said Randy Barth, CEO and Founder of Think Together. “Through their support, Think Together has been able to transform schools and children throughout the state and we look forward to partnering with even more schools to take kids from just beating the odds, to fundamentally changing the odds for years to come.” Think Together was formally founded as a nonprofit in 1997 to expand its support model to schools serving low income students. Today, the organization is a trusted partner of 43 California school districts and impacts over 150,000 kids in 422 program sites every year. Its programs and services continue to evolve to support learning in and out of school, so kids can succeed in their journey from pre-school to college or career readiness. 3 s i m p l e w a y s m e n c a n i m p r o v e t h e i r h e a lt h It’s a common misconception that Men don’t have the best track
record when it comes to taking care of themselves. It’s safe to say we all know someone who is just plain stubborn about going to the doctor. Even if they exhibit clear symptoms that should be checked out, say wheezing, chronic fatigue or worse, it can be a challenge to get them to seek medical help. Of course, not all men are like this. In fact, as a whole, men have been getting better about taking care of themselves, according to new data gathered by the American Academy of Family Physicians. “Men have begun paying more attention to their health and acting to maintain good health,” says Wanda Filer, MD, MBA, president of the AAFP and a practicing family physician. “They are getting physical exams, increasing their exercise activity, and getting their health care from their regular doctor.” With this encouraging news, it’s important to remember that men’s health is still a big concern. By keeping the following three points in mind, you can help yourself, or a loved one, lead a longer and healthier life. Health care is preventive, too.
you go to the doctor only when you’re sick or not feeling well. So, what’s the most common barrier that prevents men from seeing a doctor? Answer: themselves. According to a 2016 survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of the AAFP, 31 percent of men wait until they feel extremely sick before seeing a doctor, and 21 percent say they have no reason to go to a doctor when feeling healthy. As Filer says, “Not feeling sick is not necessarily the same as being healthy.” Early detection and preventive care are two of the most important ways to maintain health and prevent potential health concerns from becoming major problems. Step away from the screen. Though more men exercise in 2016 than they did in the AAFP’s 2007 survey (80 percent vs 74 percent), many men still spend a considerable amount of time looking at screens. In the 2016 online survey of 916 men across the country, the AAFP found that men spend, on average, about 20 hours each week working at a computer and 19 hours in front of a television.
While it’s nearly impossible to avoid screens in this day and age, men should be motivated to take on more physical and active hobbies that can reduce stress and improve their physical health. Develop a relationship with a family physician. An important step men can take to ensure they receive regular checkups and preventive care is to regularly visit a family physician. Nearly eight in 10 men (79 percent) have a regular doctor or health care professional they see when they are sick or want medical advice, however, a family physician not only treats the whole
person, but the whole family. This is because an individual’s health should be a concern for the entire family. The value of a family physician is that they perform routine checkups, immunizations and screenings. They can also treat chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, asthma, arthritis and depression. “If more men develop ongoing relationships with their family physician, their perception of good health is more likely to become reality,” said Dr. Filer. Orange County Native Receives Top Honors in D.C. By Navy Recruiting Command Public Affairs Navy Counselor 1st Class James Condon, from Anaheim, California, was awarded the Navy Recruiting Command (NRC) Sales Person of the Year for 2017 during a ceremony at the Navy Memorial in Washington D.C., May, 17. Selection for this award is a testament to Condon’s talent acquisition expertise and his positive impact in the local community. Attendees of the event included Adm. Bill Moran, vice chief of naval operations, Vice Adm. Robert Burke, chief of naval personnel, Rear Adm. John Nowell, director, military personnel plans and policy, Rear Adm. Peter Garvin, commander, NRC, Rear Adm. ceremony. “Some may think that our ships, aircraft and submarines are the Navy’s most important assets, but really it’s our Sailors.” Condon is currently assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group Portland. For him, the Navy has been a life-changing experience. “The Navy has a lot of benefits that are offered, but ultimately knowing that I could be a Sailor and give back to this great nation was my main reason for joining,” said Condon. “It has challenged me every day to push myself to be a better Sailor, Husband, and father. The Navy gives me the motivation and drive to continue to be successful in every aspect of my life.” Condon was selected for this award from more than 6,100 Navy recruiters across the nation and around the world. “We are here tonight to recognize the superb work of these outstanding Sailors,” said Garvin. “They are the best recruiters in the United States Navy, and they represent the finest recruiting has to offer.” The ceremony was just one event during a three-day occasion held in our nation’s capital city. Governor Brown, Legislative Leaders Reach Budget Agreement Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., Senate President pro Tempore Toni Atkins and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon today announced that they have reached an agreement on the 2018-19 state budget. The budget agreement makes record investments in schools and universities, creates the state’s first online community college, fully fills the Rainy Day Fund, boosts child care and combats homelessness and poverty. “After detailed discussions, California is on the verge of having another on-time, balanced budget,” said Governor Brown. “From a $27 billion deficit in 2011, the state now enjoys a healthy surplus and a solid Rainy Day Fund.” “From day one, we knew we needed to prepare for the inevitable economic downturn. That is why this budget balances fiscal responsibility with social responsibility by significantly expanding the Rainy Day Fund and also making record levels of investment in education funding – both K-12 and higher education – child care access, and
funding to fight homelessness and to protect children from living in deep poverty. I commend Governor Brown for his steady leadership throughout his years as Governor of this great state, and to Speaker Rendon for his partnership in the Legislature. We have crafted the strongest budget possible for the people of California,” said Senate President pro Tempore Atkins. “This budget agreement brings together shared priorities of the Assembly, the Senate, and the Governor — easing the homelessness crisis, providing a pathway toward healthcare for all, lifting families out of poverty, keeping college affordable for California students, and building responsible reserves as protection against tough times. No single budget can capture all the opportunities California has, or meet all the challenges we face — but the smart and sensible choices in this budget absolutely move California closer to where we want and need to be,” said Assembly Speaker Rendon.
Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.
The man cave: Give Dad a space all his own
Man cave, manspace, manctuary ... whatever he calls it, it’s Dad’s special place away from the rest of the house. This Father’s Day, give Dad the ultimate gift and make him his own man cave. It’s easier than you think, and a thoughtful gift that says to Dad, “I love you, and you can run away from us now.” Step 1: Identify the space The optimal man cave is secluded, has a lockable door and is 100 percent Dad’s to own and decorate. Examples include garages, basements, dens, attics or for the bookish types, studies. When locating Dad’s man cave, consider this - it’s his to own, decorate, use and entertain in however he chooses. He will clean it (or not) how he sees fit ... although you can encourage him with a heavy-duty vacuum, like the RIDGID Wet/Dry Vac. Step 2: Clear it out and outfit it Dad needs a blank canvas to create his masterpiece. Clear out all the boxes, industrial-size cleaning and paper products and any other knickknacks you’ve stored there. Locate the focal point of the room and think about what he’ll put there. For sports-loving dads and his friends, this will probably be a big screen TV. For the DIYer and builder, it’s where his workbench goes. * Paint it. A fresh coat of paint does wonders. In one glance, it can tell you that you’ve entered the “man room.” BEHR paint experts recommend dark blues, greens or reds for a man cave, with accents of charcoal blacks or chocolate brown. * No matter the dad, you’ll want to set him up with durable storage options that can handle anything from power tools to whiskey stones, like a Husky
9-drawer Mobile Work Center, $249 or the Husky 48 inch Floor Cabinet, $379. It’ll also withstand every day wear and tear and look great years from now. * Does Dad like giant TVs? Don’t run the risk of having it crash to the ground. Get a mounting kit, like the Level Mount Adjustable Fixed Mount, $47.99. If you’ve got questions on how to install, ask an associate when you’re picking it up. Step 3: Stock it Next, fill ‘er up with goodies to keep him busy for days. Whether these gifts are for his projects or just for relaxing, Dad deserves ultimate setup. * If Dad likes to entertain or just stay refreshed while working, an ice maker and mini fridge will keep him from having to leave his new favorite place. Check out the Magic Chef 27-lb Portable Ice Maker ($199) and the SPT Mini Refrigerator, $169. * Dad like toys? Hook him up with the latest innovation in power tools - lithium ion batteries. They hold their charge four times longer than traditional ni-cad batteries. For newbies, the Ryobi ONE+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Drill and Impact Driver Combo kit or the Ryobi ONE + Ultimate Combo Kits are both great choices to get Dad drilling. For the fully-stocked DIYer, try the Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ 18-Gauge Cordless 2 inch Brad Nailer. If it’s hand tools he’s after, you can get lifetime-guaranteed Husky 7-Piece Ratcheting Mobile Wrench Set. * Give him something cool to show off with his friends. Check out the Defiant AmorMax 3D Tactical Flashlight, $29.97, which can shine the length of three football fields and work even while submerged in 30 feet of water; a Kerogrator Beer Keg Fridge,
$499 or an LED headlamp like the Defiant 7 LED Headlamp, $17.97 (you’ll be shocked at the uses he’ll find for this). * Let him choose his own adventure with new Project Cards from The Home Depot - load it up with the amount needed for Dad’s next project and he can track the balance with no fees. If you’re helping Dad, you can also be added to the account to use the card when you run out for supplies. Step 4: Break it in Every new space needs a housewarming party, including caves. Invite the guys over and encourage Dad to show off his man cave’s sweet style.- Put together tubs of soda, beer and water, order the wings, arrange easy table snacks like chips and salsa, and let them have at it. Cheers to this mancutary.

California State Archives Releases Nearly 3,000 Newly Digitized Photos of Early 20th Century Life and Landmarks The California State Archives has completed one of its largest digitization projects ever. The collection features nearly 3,000 photographs taken by native Californians William M. and Grace McCarthy from approximately 1905 to 1938. The McCarthys traveled extensively during the early years of automobile travel, as newly constructed highways connected people and places throughout the United States and beyond, providing pictorial documentation of a pivotal period in our nation’s history. “While most of us do not leave the house without a camera on our smartphone now, William and Grace documented California during a much different time,” Secretary of State Alex Padilla said. “As early adopters of automobile travel and personal photography, the McCarthy’s embodied California’s pioneering spirit. Their photo collection captures the landmarks and events that defined California, and beyond, during the early 20th century. These clear, high-quality photos are some of the true gems of the State Archives, I’m proud of the hard work of our staff to ensure that they will be easily accessible to a global audience.” Always ready with his camera, William McCarthy captured stunning images of California landmarks and significant events, including: Shots of San Francisco, including before and after the 1906 earthquake, and the fire that destroyed the famous Cliff House in 1907. Los Angeles’ iconic City Hall and the Hollywood Hills. California’s stunning natural beauty—including Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, the central coast, and the Mojave Desert. San Diego’s Balboa Park and Mission San
Diego. A journey into Mexico along the Pan American Highway. State and International Expositions, including the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, Panama-California Exposition, the Chicago World’s Fair, the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, and the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition. The original black and white photographs, mounted in eleven albums, make up one of the few private collections preserved by the California State Archives. The collection was digitized by the State Archives’ curatorial staff. This newly collection substantially builds upon the State Archives’ previous online exhibit, “California
Memoirs: The William M. McCarthy Photograph Collection,” that was launched on Google Arts & Culture in July 2017. The previous exhibit contained several dozen images, while the newly digitized McCarthy photo collection contains nearly 3,000 images. William M. McCarthy (1876 – 1956) and Grace C. Kane (1878 – 1957) wed in the early 1900s and were married for over fifty years. They lived in San Francisco for most of their lives where William was stationed as an armament expert for the U.S. War Department. Celebrate Dad with Grilling and Golf This year for Father’s Day, skip the tacky tie and 6 tablespoons diced red onion give dad something he truly wants – quality time 3 garlic cloves, minced with the kids who gave him such an honorable 3 tablespoons lemon juice title. Plan an intimate family gathering with all his 1 tablespoon olive oil favorite foods and a few special touches that reflect 1/4 teaspoon ground thyme his other passions in life, such as golf. Pepper to taste Let dad savor some grilled goodness (and a 1 pound boned, lean pork chop, cut into healthy dose of antioxidants) with colorful fruit and 1-inch cubes (approximately 38-40 pieces) veggie kabobs. Healthy, hydrating watermelon is 32 cubes watermelon (1 inch each), plus extra the star ingredient of these colorful skewers, which for garnish if desired also include marinated chunks of pork. 16-24 zucchini rounds (1/2 inch) Add a low-calorie, fat-free side by serving 16 pineapple chunks, fresh or watermelon balls in a fun golf ball-shaped vessel canned (1 inch each) carved from a watermelon rind. 24 yellow or orange peppers For more recipes and carving ideas using chunks (1 inch each, approximately versatile watermelon, visit www.watermelon.org. 3-4 peppers total) Pork and Watermelon Kabobs Cooking spray Servings: 8 Sesame seeds for garnish 6 tablespoons brown sugar Combine sugar, soy sauce, onion, garlic, lemon 6 tablespoons soy sauce juice, olive oil, thyme and pepper in mixing bowl. Pour into resealable bag and add pork pieces. Seal bag, mix thoroughly and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, turning bag periodically. Remove pork from bag and reserve marinade. Thread 5 pork pieces, 4 watermelon cubes, 2-3 zucchini rounds, 2 pineapple chunks and 3 peppers on each of 8 skewers, alternating the order. Spray cooking surface on heated grill and place kebobs on grill. Grill for 12-15 minutes, or until done, turning and basting frequently with reserved marinade. Garnish with sesame seeds and chunks of watermelon. Golf Ball Serving Bowl Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. On cutting board, place watermelon on side and cut off 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch from stem end, being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind.
This will provide sturdy base. Using paring knife, cut a 3- to 4-inch round circle in top of watermelon. Use melon baller to make shallow round divots into rind of watermelon to mimic dimples in golf ball. Next, use kitchen knife to peel thin layers of rind off to expose white underneath, being careful not to cut too deep or red flesh will be exposed. Try to get as much of green rind off so it will resemble a white golf ball. Hollow out watermelon with spoon or scoop. Place on tray and add watermelon balls to serve.

Thanks, Dad: 5 special things you can do for your father this season He was there when you rode your bike for the first time, got behind the wheel of a car and when you simply couldn’t figure out algebra. Your dad has been there for you through the good and the bad and he’s given you so much that you can’t help but want to give back. Now’s the perfect time. Whether you do it for Father’s Day, his birthday, anniversary or a simple surprise Tuesday, anytime can be the perfect backdrop to show Dad just how much he’s meant to you and it all starts with these tips. * Celebrate his interests. What does your dad love to do? Whatever it is, do it with him. Whether it’s a fishing trip to his favorite lake, tickets to watch his favorite team play or even a surprise trip to the destination he’s always wanted to visit, Dad will love the gift even more if it means spending time with you. * Indulge him with the latest tech. If your dad is a gadget guy, now is the perfect time to indulge him with the latest technology. One way to do this is to solve the WiFi troubles in his home with eero, a reliable and secure home WiFi solution. Instead of relying on a single router to cover the entire home, eero will provide WiFi
to every room. No more dead spots, slow spots or drop-offs; it’s the perfect solution for total WiFi coverage. And it’s secure - unlike traditional routers, eero receives regular security updates automatically, so no more searching, downloading or installing needed. * Think of everything. This sounds daunting at first, of course, but one of the best gifts you can give Dad is a day away from the pressures he normally feels. That means if you plan to spend the day with him doing one of the activities listed above, plan that activity out to the last detail so he only has to go along for the ride. And if you’re not planning to do such an excursion, your dad will appreciate your help with a job on his to-do list. Painting, yard work or errands, the more you can do for him, the less stress he’ll feel. * Create a scrapbook. From social media to computers and cloud storage, finding the photos and videos that relive important life moments has never been easier. Use them and create a scrapbook or digital memento for your father. Celebrate some of your greatest adventures together and you’ll create a keepsake he’ll cherish forever.
* Say thank you. This one is so simple it’s amazing how many people forget to do it. At the same time, though, sometimes a simple thankyou is all Dad needs. Thank him for everything he has brought to your life.
Thank him for teaching you to ride a bike, drive a car or trying to teach you algebra. Let him know that you appreciate everything he has done for you and you’ll truly deliver your father a one-of-a-kind present. - (BPT)

Do ’s and don’ts of shopping for dads and grads Father’s Day and graduations are coming up, and that means you’ll have to think of appropriate gifts for these heralded champions. You don’t need to spend a fortune to make gift recipients happy, all you do need to do is put some thought into their presents. A few tips and tricks will help you pick out a gift the recipient is sure to love. Here are some do’s and don’ts for shopping for dads and grads: Do: * Know what Dad enjoys. Does he like to cook? To read? Enjoy a specific sports team? It’s easier to buy a gift he’ll enjoy when you tailor it to his tastes. * Consider giving your grad cash. Whether he or she is graduating from high school or college, there will be late-night pizza needs that pop up, and that money is sure to come in handy. * Check your area for unique experiences. Being a tourist in your hometown can be easier than you think - whether it’s a trip to a local street fair, a specialty beer tasting at nearby watering hole, or even an afternoon at the ball game, sometimes sharing the experience can be the best gift.
* Spread your gift out through the whole year with a subscription to Netflix for Dad’s movie obsession, Hulu Plus for TV-lovers or Pandora for your grad with a music library that rivals Billboard’s Hot 100.- Almost all online streaming devices from TVs to Blu-ray players and even a sound bar from LG can give him access to his subscription. *Grads would love a place to plug in their music, and a docking station is perfect for everything from visiting a friend’s dorm room to just lounging around the apartment. With the ability to wirelessly stream from both iPhones and Androids, LG’s dual docking station can play from any phone in the area and keep them charged in the meantime. Don’t: * Buy Dad a tie. Beyond being cliche, with today’s casual workplace, he probably has more than enough already. Nothing says “forced smile” like a tie. * Buy your grads gift card for specific stores. By now, they’ve got their own flair and style, and you’ll run the risk of missing the mark. Best to throw a cash card or two in the mix, and call it the “gift of shopping.” * Give your grad the customary
graduation pen - it will be “lost” or act as the resident paper weight until he/ she moves out. * Buy exercise equipment unless you know it will be used. Just because you think Dad should start exercising, doesn’t mean he shares your enthusiasm - and you’re implying he needs to lose weight (not what he wants to hear).
* Skimp on technology. It changes quickly - that’s why stores have those clearance tables. No need to break the bank, but don’t buy something that’s outdated the moment you walk out of the store. Regardless of what you give a grad or Dad, she or he will appreciate it the most when your gift comes from your heart. -(BPT)
Look no further than your freezer for Dad’s perfect gift Bill Cosby once said, “Fatherhood is pretending the present you love the most is soap-on-a-rope.” As children all over the country prepare to honor their dads for Father’s Day or a special birthday, it might be time to say “no” to the soap and ties and give him what he really loves - a home-cooked meal. In a survey of more than 2,000 American adults, Harris Interactive asked men and women about the best gifts for their dads. While a new tablet or smartphone came in at No. 1, the second thing dads want most is a home-cooked meal. For most of us, tablets and smartphones might be out of reach, but a home-cooked meal is just what the budget ordered. And what home-cooked meal do dads love the most? According to a study (featured on the Today Show) that examined the intersection between food taste and gender, men tend to prefer salt-fat combinations (burgers, pizza, chips). When it comes to comfort food, men turn to steak or stews. Simply put - men like meat. So this year, when it’s time to honor your dad, consider hosting a family barbecue with all of Dad’s home-cooked favorites. Whether you choose mouth-watering steak burgers, bone-in ribeyes or fingerlicking good Kansas City barbecue, the options are almost endless for a home-cooked meal that Dad (and your friends and family) will love. If you don’t know where to start your menu planning, you can find
some great barbecue ideas online. Be sure to check out the recipe and cooking tips from The Kansas City Steak Company. Simply select your favorite category and you’ll receive helpful tips and tricks for a delectable meal with recipes created by talented chefs and home cooks across the country. With more than 600 recipes to choose from, you’re sure to find just the right meal to honor your dad. Ed Scavuzzo, president of The Kansas City Steak Company, says that summer is becoming one of the company’s busiest times of the year. “As life gets more complicated, more families are using special days like Father’s Day to reconnect. We provide everything you need to host the perfect outdoor barbecue - except the grill.” Once you’ve selected the perfect meal for your dad, don’t forget to check out these top 10 grilling tips to maximize flavors and minimize flare-ups. Whether your dad wants to navigate the grill himself - after all, it is his day - or he allows you to take over for the day, grilling your meat-of-choice to perfection is easy when you follow a few simple rules. There’s even a grilling app to give you on-the-spot tips and timing. So this year when it’s time to honor your dad, look no further than your computer, your creativity and your freezer for a gift he’ll treasure memories made together enjoying a home-cooked meal. -(BPT)

Dote on Dad with a Backyard Brunch Brunch isn’t just for mom. This Father’s Day, make eggs, toast and bacon on the grill for a breakfast that’s sure to spoil the man of the house. Not sure how to make eggs on the grill? It’s easy! Crack an egg into a cut-out hole in toast set on a cedar plank, then sprinkle with a little cheddar and an Applewood rub for smoky grilled flavor. “To complete the meal on dad’s favorite outdoor tool, cook the bacon in a shallow disposable foil pan next to the eggs,” said Chef Kevan Vetter of the McCormick Kitchens. “Once the bacon is almost done, I love to brush it with a honey-cinnamon mixture, then grill it directly on the grates for a few minutes to add a candied crisp.” For more grilling recipes and tips visit www.grillmates.com, and check out McCormick Grill Mates on Facebook. Cedar Plank Grilled Egg in Toast Makes 4 servings Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes 2 cedar planks (about 12x6 inches each)

Segerstrom Center for the Arts Presents Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein In Conversation and Performance Beloved American entertainment icons Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein appear together at Segerstrom Center for the Arts for the first time, in conversation and performance, on June 30, 2018 in Segerstrom Hall. A star-powered event, this will be a rare opportunity to get to know the personalities of two of the entertainment world’s most talented and celebrated artists. Single tickets start at $79 and are now available online at www.SCFTA. org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. Liza Minnelli Liza Minnelli, winner of four Tony Awards, an Oscar, a special “Legends” Grammy, two Golden Globe Awards and an Emmy, is one of the entertainment world’s consummate performers. In film, on stage and in television, Liza has won critical acclaim, a multitude of fans, and recognition from her peers in show business, giving new dimension and credibility to the word “superstar.” One of America’s true legends, Liza began her professional career at an early age, 16, in 1963, in an OffBroadway revival of the musical Best Foot Forward, for which she received her first award, the Theatre World Award. It would be the first among many show business honors. In 1972 her movie career peaked when she played Sally Bowles in Cabaret. The film won eight Oscars, including Best Actress for Liza. The role also earned her a Golden Globe and a British Film Academy Award. The unqualified success of Cabaret put Liza on the covers of both Time and Newsweek in the same week. Liza starred in the first concert ever filmed live for television in 1972. The seminal Liza with a Z produced a Top 20 album and won the Emmy for Outstanding Single Program and the prestigious Peabody Award. It has been released in recent years on DVD. In between her many TV and film roles, Liza has never stopped touring and has long been considered one of the most exciting concert performers, electrifying audiences around the world and setting records at the most prestigious venues, from the Palladium in London and Opera House in Sydney, to the Olympia Theatre in Paris and New York’s historic Carnegie Hall, where one of Liza’s greatest triumphs was her unprecedented three-week concert engagement in 1987. Liza was the first entertainer in the hall’s history to completely sell-out three weeks of appearances. She had earlier appeared in concert at Carnegie Hall in 1979. This appearance was every bit as unforgettable. On closing night the police had to disperse the crowd when they refused to leave the
Liza Minnelli and Michael Feinstein. auditorium following multiple encores. Both concerts were recorded and are among the music industry’s most highly praised live concert recordings. One of the greatest and most acclaimed show business triumphs of all time was Liza’s record-setting inconcert engagement at Manhattan’s famed Radio City Music Hall in 1991, where Liza played to packed houses for three weeks, followed by a return engagement. The show was called, “Stepping Out,” after Liza’s film of the same name. Today, when her busy schedule allows, she works with students at The Actor’s Studio teaching master classes in acting and singing. Her well-known generosity of spirit, enthusiasm and commitment to her craft are unequaled in the entertainment industry. Michael Feinstein Michael Feinstein has built a dazzling career over the last three decades, bringing the music of the Great American songbook to the world. From recordings that have earned him five Grammy Award nominations to his Emmy-nominated PBS-TV specials, his acclaimed NPR series and concerts spanning the globe, plus appearances at such iconic venues as The White House, Buckingham Palace, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall and Sydney Opera House, his work as an educator and archivist define Feinstein as one of the most important musical forces of our time. Feinstein’s passion for music and the Great American songbook (he founded the Great American
Songbook Foundation, dedicated to celebrating the art form and preserving it through educational programs, master classes and the annual High School Songbook Academy) has taken him along many artistic paths that have brought him great critical acclaim. His Sinatra Project earned his fifth Grammy Award nomination and led to The Sinatra Project, Volume II: The Good Life. His Emmy Award-nominated TV special Michael Feinstein – The Sinatra Legacy was taped live at the Palladium in Carmel, IN and aired across the country in 2011. The PBS series Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook received the ASCAP Deems-Taylor Television Broadcast Award. He released the CDs The Power Of Two – collaborating with Glee and 30 Rock star Cheyenne Jackson – and Cheek To Cheek, recorded with Broadway legend Barbara Cook. For his CD We Dreamed These Days, he co-wrote the title song with Dr. Maya Angelou. For his nationally syndicated public radio program, Song Travels, Michael interviews and performs alongside such music luminaries as Bette Midler, Neil Sedaka, Liza Minnelli, Rickie Lee Jones, David Hyde Pierce and others. Feinstein is Principal Pops Conductor for the Pasadena Symphony. Under his leadership, the Pasadena Pops has quickly become a premier orchestral presenter of the Great American Songbook, with definitive performances of rare orchestrations and classic arrangements. He launched an additional Pops series at the Kravis
Center for the Performing Arts in Palm Beach, Florida. Feinstein’s at the Nikko, Michael’s nightclub at San Francisco’s Nikko Hotel, has presented the top talents of pop and jazz since 2013. He debuted at Feinstein’s/54 Below, his new club in New York, late in 2015. His first venue in New York, Feinstein’s at the Regency, featured major entertainers such as Rosemary Clooney, Glen Campbell, Barbara Cook, Diahann Carroll, Jane Krakowski, Lea Michele, Cyndi Lauper, Jason Mraz and Alan Cumming from 1999 to 2012. In 2013, Michael released Change Of Heart: The Songs of Andre Previn, in collaboration with the four-time Oscar and 11-time Grammy Awardwinning composer-conductor-pianist. The album celebrates Previn’s pop songs and motion picture classics. Earlier album highlights include Hopeless Romantics, a songbook of classics by Michael’s late friend Harry Warren, recording with legendary jazz pianist George Shearing. His album with songwriting icon Jimmy Webb, Only One Life – The Songs of Jimmy Webb, was named one of the 10 Best CDs of the Year by USA Today. Through his life performances, recordings, film and television appearances and his songwriting (in collaboration with Alan and Marilyn Berman, Lindy Robbins, Bob Merrill and Marshall Barer), Feinstein is an all-star force in American music. 600 Town Center Drive Costa Mesa, CA 92626 T (714) 556-2121 SCFTA.org
