Jerome Bohuslavizki from Rancho Santa Margarita High School Selected to the NFL’s Legacy Leadership Project By Sean Zeitler Congratulations to rising senior Jerome Bohuslavizki ’16 of Dove Canyon for being selected to the NFL Legacy Leadership Project. Now that he has been selected, Bohuslavizki will experience a unique one-toone mentoring relationship with a Pro Football Hall of Fame (PFHOF) member. The selection of finalists were made by a committee and will include an all-expense paid trip to Canton, Ohio to attend the induction
ceremonies this summer. In order to be selected, the student-athlete needed to exemplify the qualities of “IMPACT,” integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community, and tenacity. Bohuslavizki is a wide receiver and outside linebacker for the varsity football team and is widely recognized across the SMCHS community as a leader both on and off the field. The Legacy Leadership Project began in 2008 in Orange County, California with a single athlete and Pro Football Hall of Fame mentor. The mission was simple; to provide experiences and support that could help student athletes who have the most influence on the future of football make positive life choices. The program began as an experiment, but proved so successful that the LLP now offers a leadership and life skills symposium, and involves over a dozen members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame (PFHOF) who volunteer as sponsors and mentors. The LLP is supported by the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, a nonJerome Bohuslavizki on the field profit 501(c)(3).

Tips for making your child’s birthday extra special this year For many young children (especially those between the ages of 3 and 6), a birthday is the most important and anticipated day of the year, ranking even above Christmas or Easter. The challenge, however, is that with more two-income families, increase in single parent households, and busier work and school schedules, finding the time and the creativity to make kids’ birthdays extra special is difficult. “There are many fun and easy ways to make your child feel extra special on their birthday. It is amazing how these little touches can make such big and lasting impressions,” says Tish Dahlby, the author of Pinklejinx, a new children’s book that tells the story of Joy, the birthday fairy. Here are some simple ideas to help your child feel special. * Start the celebration early. While the child is sleeping, sneak into the bedroom and decorate with balloons and streamers. Cover the floor or stuff the closet with balloons. Form a trail of confetti that leads from the bedroom to the breakfast table. * Provide surprise birthday wishes throughout the house. Hide birthday wishes in unexpected places. Using soap, craft a birthday greeting on the bathroom mirror, the kitchen window or the rear window of the car. * Involve the whole family. If there are siblings or other relatives in the house, have them wait on the birthday child. Even the family pet could wear a special birthday hat. * Create a festive environment fit for royalty. Consider dining at the fancy table in a room reserved just for special occasions. There you can pull out all the stops to make your child feel like a real prince or princess. The Pinklejinx birthday keepsake kit provides everything you need, including the storybook
you and your child can read the night before to create a new family tradition of welcoming Joy, the birthday fairy. The kit includes a brightly colored felt birthday banner along with a festive felt chair cover with ribbons and tassels that turns any chair into the seat of honor. A velvety crown provides the full royal treatment and is durable enough to be worn for hours or even days after the birthday festivities have ended. Breakfast can be served on the colorful cake plate or pedestal bowl, along with birthday candle-shaped utensils. The most important ingredient, of course, is the Pinklejinx sprinkles, which should be sprinkled just before making the birthday wish. * Celebrate loud and clear. If possible, find a way to celebrate the exact moment of the child’s birth with lots of hoopla - perhaps blow some horns or bang the pots. * Break the routine. This is a day unlike any other, so don’t follow the same routine. Get creative with the food you serve, its color and how you serve it. Instead of making the child wait to open presents, start the day by opening at least one very special
present. * Communicate what’s special about your child. This is the time for letting your feelings show. Take turns going around the table and let everyone in the family give one reason why the birthday child is special. * Lunchbox surprise. Pack school lunches as normal but take a few extra minutes to wrap the birthday child’s sandwich in gift wrap. Imagine your child’s smile as he or she unwraps the most special sandwich at the lunch table. * Start a new tradition. Make this birthday so special that your little ones will already be counting down the days until the next birthday. Consider doing the same thing every year. Start by reading the Pinklejinx birthday story the night before the celebration and prepare for the coming of the birthday fairy. Or take a photo in the same location doing the same thing each birthday to see how much has changed in just one year. For more ideas on how to make birthdays extra special, visit www. pinklejinx.com.

Actress Holly Robinson Peete Joins 44 Women for Children College Scholarship fundraiser Photos by Ann Chatillon Nearly 300 Orange County ladies (and a few men too) gathered at The Resort at Pelican Hill to raise money for scholarships so that local foster teens can achieve their dreams of attending college. The luncheon was presented by Orangewood Children’s Foundation’s 44 Women for Children auxiliary. Event chair Carey Clawson led a committee of 44 Women members. Highlights were the speech from Orangewood scholarship student Karla and a Q&A session with actress Holly Robinson Peete. The luncheon started with a VIP reception meet and greet with Holly Robinson Peete. Several VIP’s, sponsors and special guests joined her in the private ballroom at the resort. The opportunity drawing items were displayed outside where guest gathered to enjoy and to bid on. There were nine items up for grabs plus a premium opportunity drawing for a chance to win a David Yurman ring and bracelet pair valued at $3,125. The winner of the jewelry was Diana McCutchen of Aliso Viejo. Some of the opportunity items were a $1,000 South Coast Plaza Gift Certificate and a Diptyque Basket, Tom Xavier was the lucky winner. Colleen Davidson of Newport Coast took home the 4 Diamond Club Angels tickets pus parking and a Prime Cut Café gift card while Jackie Cisneros won the Mercedes Benz S-Klass Ride on Car for Kids with 2 tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific and 2 round trip passes on the Catalina Flyer. Other items included an Anaheim Duck Experience, OC Restaurant Experience with Golf, Disney passes and designer fashions. The luncheon program started with a welcome from Event Co-Chair Carey Clawson. A video was introduced of how important it is to support this organization and what it does for our youth. Founded in 1999 by Susan Samueli, 44 Women for Children contributes to Orangewood Children’s Foundation by nurturing, supporting and inspiring adolescents emancipating from the foster care system on their 18th birthdays. Scholarship student Karla was then introduced to talk about her experience with 44 Women for Children. She started her speech by showing a video about her past that she created. She described the abuse she endured while living with her family but transitioning from the video to her speech, Karla said, “First things first. Please smile, my story is not a sad one.” She shifted the focus from her past to her present, sharing with the audience five great things that have happened to her in the past five years, including graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree, joining Teach for America and spending two years teaching in Hawaii, and being accepted into a master’s degree program at John’s Hopkins University (funded in part through an Orangewood Advanced Studies scholarship). “My heart is bursting with gratitude,” she said. “I see the faces of the people who love the ones who feel unlovable. Your contribution delivers miracles. You took a chance on me and now I no longer contemplate ‘how will I get there?’ I contemplate ‘of all that is possible- what will I choose?’” Actress Holly Robinson Peete sat down for a Q&A session with Orangewood Board member and NBC4 News Orange County Bureau Chief Vikki Vargas. The two women, both working mothers, exchanged light banter on the topics of fame, family, and bad 80’s hairstyles. On a more serious note, Peete shared with the audience what drove her and her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, to create their HollyRod Foundation, which supports those affected by Parkinson’s (which Holly’s father battled) and autism (with which the couple’s eldest son is diagnosed). She spoke about the value of an education telling the story of how she stopped acting to return to school and of support for marginalized youth who often don’t have a voice in society. Wrapping up her time on stage, Peete shared a quote with the crowd by Marian Edelman, the 1st woman accepted to the Mississippi Bar, “Service is the rent we pay for living,” and applauded those in attendance for their service to Orange County foster youth. 44 Women for Children focuses on three key areas: providing mentoring and education; increasing community awareness about child abuse and neglect; and hosting annual fundraising events. Elegant summer entertaining with fresh, seasonal cocktails
Summer is synonymous with entertaining and for good reason. Warm summer days and long summer evenings make the perfect backdrop for gatherings with friends and family to enjoy delicious food and drinks. As Memorial Day, Independence Day and long summer weekends come and go, keep in mind some simple tips to make your summer soirees extra special and elegant. First, instead of typically busy patterned linens and party decor, use simple color schemes to convey summer holiday themes with sophistication. Decorate your table with monochromatic fresh flowers in red, white or blue, accented with crisp white linens and bowls of fresh red strawberries and blueberries. The berries serve double-duty as refreshing snacks and beautiful table decor that pull through the summer color palette. You can also string white lights in backyard trees and foliage. As the sun sets, simple white lights will add an element of twinkling elegance and ambiance to outdoor gatherings. Finally, serve craft cocktails made with La Marca Prosecco, an affordably luxurious crisp and refreshing Italian sparkling wine. Combine La Marca Prosecco with in-season fruit and a selection of spirits to add a special touch of elegance to any summer gathering. Santa Margarita High School Youth Co-Ed Track & Field Camp July 13 – July 17
Open to Rising 5th- 8th Graders (Incoming Freshman) Over the past 20 years our summer camp has helped students learn and develop the basics of each event. Specialized group and individualized instruction will be given each day. Our camp has been very successful in identifying campers’ strengths and
giving them a good idea of what they should focus on once they are on the team. Many previous campers have developed into fine hurdlers or jumpers in addition to sprinters only after they have discovered their ability to be successful in the event from trying it out during the summer camp. This camp is open to 5th-8th
graders. This camp will cover all events excluding the pole vault for safety reasons. Camp Instructors will be head boys track and field Coach, Sean Zeitler; head girls track and field Coach Gil Garcia, and Director of Track & Field Dave Zeitler. Between the three coaches, there is over 60
years of track and field coaching experience. SMCHS Contact: Sean Zeitler, Head Boys Track & Field Coach 949-766-6000 zeitlers@smhs.org Located at, Santa Margarita Catholic High School Track. Meet at the Track and Field Monument

Nathalie Manning and Con Spirit Sail Away with a Grand Prix Win
With an entourage of family, friends and clients, Manning was surrounded with smiling faces The $30,000 Markel Insurance Grand Prix at the Blenheim Red, White, & Blue Classic finished in style as Nathalie Manning won her first grand prix blue aboard her own Con Spirit. The pair were the only double clean of the day. The class included future show jumping stars such as sixteenyear-old Sophia Mossman and seventeen-year-old Morgan Dickerson, both alternates for the North American Junior and Young Riders Championships this July, as well as riders with impressive miles like Mexico’s Eduardo Sanchez Navarro and American Michelle Rodal. A strong local contingent also competed, including last week’s Markel Insurance Grand Prix winner, Marc Grock, and the 1.40m event once again offered another solid yet not overwhelming grand prix opportunity. In 2014, the wildly successful Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series hosted classes with up to 96 entries and a competitive final at the Las Vegas National. Returning as the sponsor for a second year, Brandon Seger, Director of Equine Operations for Markel, is pleased with the response to these events. “We wanted to do a sponsorship with Blenheim EquiSports, and they had the brilliant idea to do this ‘meter forty’ series. They explained that it would be a class where up-and-coming riders, as well as amateur riders, could compete with some of the pros,” he commented. “And I thought what a cool opportunity to get involved in a class that brings everyone together, and gives them a chance to rise to the occasion.” Page 22
International course designer Jack Robson’s track handled the mix of experience well. With a tight time allowed, two riders finished with only time faults, Rodal on Morgan Hill Partners’ Albert II and Jamie Barge on Kyelico’s Luebbo. In a winning round format, faults accrued for the top six scoring riders in the first round carried over to the jump-off. The two riders with time faults returned first, followed by the four who were clean in round one. The first of the four were Manning and Con Spirit who rode fault free in 45.85. The next three attempts, Misti Cassar on Gavin Brodin’s Allstar

5, Eduardo Sanchez Navarro on his Pacifico and Jamie Barge aboard Kylieco’s Lasse each had rails. Manning galloped away with a double clean victory. Grinning from ear to ear, the California professional was ecstatic as she came out of the ring. She had huge praise for her nine-year-old mount. “He’s perfect,” she says of Con Spirit, a horse she got when he was six years old. “I’ve never had a grand prix horse. And this is our first grand prix win!” Bringing along another young horse, Manning also won the Six Year Old Jumper Classic on the same day
aboard Helium. A pro since 2009, Manning is coached by Michelle Parker and runs Acorn Farm at the nearby Oaks Facility. “I just want to thank Michelle Parker and Salvador Alvarado, Alex Alvarado, and all of Acorn Farm and Guillermo Flores for all their help. I couldn’t do it without my team! Manning and Con Spirit plan to continue in the grand prix classes at Showpark this summer. The shows head south to Del Mar in just over two weeks with the Showpark Summer Festival, Racing Festival and August Festival. Photos by McCool

HAPPY GRAPES
By David White On January 12, 2007, one of the world’s greatest violin players set up shop in the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station in Washington, D.C. Wearing jeans, a long sleeved T-shirt, and a Washington Nationals baseball cap, 39 year old Joshua Bell pulled out his instrument handcrafted by Antonio Stradivari in 1713 and purchased in 2003 for nearly $4 million and played six classical songs for rush hour commuters. The setting of Bell’s 43 minute performance was unusual, to say the least. By the time he was 14, the violin prodigy was soloing for the Philadelphia Orchestra. At 17, he made his first appearance at Carnegie Hall. He has performed as a guest soloist for the New York Philharmonic three times and currently directs one of the world’s most celebrated chamber orchestras.
More than 1,000 commuters came within earshot of Bell that morning and witnessed a world class performance from a musical genius on one of the finest instruments ever crafted. Yet among the mass of hurried Metro riders, Bell went almost unnoticed. What does any of this have to do with wine? Quite a bit. Giant corporate producers dominate the wine market. In the United States, three brands E. & J. Gallo, the Wine Group, and Constellation produced 172.3 million cases of wine in 2012, accounting for roughly 50 percent of wine sales. Yet most of the world’s finest wines are produced by small, unassuming, and largely ignored grape growers. Unlike the big brands, these vignerons produce wines that reflect the regions and vineyards in which the grapes are grown. Their wines have a distinctiveness that can’t be matched by mass produced alternatives. In other words, wine consumers are surrounded by Joshua Bell level brilliance. Serious wine enthusiasts are finally paying attention. To some extent, the relative anonymity of most wine producers is understandable. The United States is home to more than 8,000 wineries. Three in four produce fewer than 5,000 cases per year; about 50 percent produce fewer than 500,000
cases. Other wine producing countries boast similar ratios; the back roads of Italy, France, and Spain are full of passionate vignerons who make miniscule amounts of compelling, soulful wine. And just as Bell can be readily ignored once separated from a “brand name” institution like Carnegie Hall, it’s easy to overlook the excellence of these small producers. They don’t have the kind of status that comes with a recognizable brand name like, say, Veuve Clicquot, which produces more than 1 million cases of Champagne annually. This lack of name recognition has enabled big producers to effectively monopolize the wine market, especially in the United States. But that’s changing. One man who helped launch this shift is Kermit Lynch, a writer and musician who started to recognize these growers more than three decades ago. With a $5,000 loan from his girlfriend, he opened an eponymous wine shop in northern California in 1972. He soon became a distributor and importer as well, visiting Europe regularly to look for the wine equivalent of Stradivarius wielding fiddlers in a Metro station. And he began educating consumers about the virtues of traditional wines artisanal projects, produced with
minimal intervention, that express a sense of place. Lynch inspired many imitators. These days, if you walk into any good wine retailer and watch how the geekiest consumers shop, you’ll undoubtedly see people flipping bottles over to check the import label. These savvy shoppers know that in addition to Lynch, they can rely on importers like Neal Rosenthal, Louis/ Dressner, Terry Theise, and Peter Weygandt to bring in good wine. The tastes of these small importers are, without question, ascendant. Sommeliers and boutique retailers, too, are beginning to eschew what Lynch calls “pop” wines heavy, oaksoaked concoctions designed for mass appeal. At restaurants and on retail shelves across the country, consumers can now find interesting, small-production wines more easily than ever before. And America’s booming wine tourism industry is proof that consumers appreciate wine beyond Sutter Home and Barefoot. Consumers are finally recognizing that the subway-station musician they’ve long ignored may be a treasure waiting to be discovered.
