Chocolate Chip Cookie Bowls 3 cups all-purpose flour 2/3 cup firmly-packed brown sugar 1/3 cup granulated sugar 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) butter, melted 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2/3 cup miniature semi-sweet chocolate chips Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray outside of each bowl cavity of Ice Cream Cookie Bowl Pan with vegetable pan spray. In large bowl, combine flour, sugars, baking powder and salt; mix well. In small bowl, whisk together melted

butter, eggs and vanilla; add to dry ingredients, mixing well to form stiff dough. Mix in chocolate chips. Roll out dough on generouslyfloured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut 5-inch round circles from dough. Drape one circle over each cavity of pan, pressing to form smooth surface. Bake 12-14 minutes or until cookie cups are firm and golden brown. Cool

on pan on cooling rack 5 minutes. Loosen bottom edges of cookies from pan using small spatula. Carefully remove cookies from pan and cool completely. Wash and dry pan; repeat with remaining dough. Fill cooled cookie bowls with ice cream, pudding or fresh fruit. Makes 12 bowls

Janie is survived by her husband Lee, her brother John Mascari, sister Denise Lawler, her five children Brian Penderghast, Shawna Fallon, Steven Penderghast, Dean Penderghast and Maria Brief, their spouses and fourteen wonderful grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Thurs., July 17, at San Francisco Solano Catholic Church. Five Tips for Safe Summer Sun By Kevin Ronneberg, M.D. Summer has arrived. As the weather heats up, it’s critical for beachgoers and outdoor fun-seekers to be sun-safe. This begins with choosing the right sunscreen to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Equally important are these five simple tips from the Skin Cancer Foundation, which also will help you mitigate sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. First, seek the shade. Simply minimizing exposure to UVA and UVB rays can go a long way toward protecting your skin. Taking a break from direct sun is especially important between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when rays are strongest. And remember, clouds don’t block UV rays. Infants under 6 months should always be kept out of the sun -- protected with clothing, an umbrella or a stroller hood. Children and adults should wear protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses. Second, use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Regardless of the season, this kind of sun protection should be used on a daily basis. Most people understand the importance of sun safety during the summer months, but many underestimate the need for year-round protection. The temperature may drop, but UV rays remains strong. And the cooler temperatures may actually prevent people from realizing the extent of the damage the sun is doing to their skin. Next year, new regulations from the Food and Drug Administration will help consumers know they’re getting the right protection by prohibiting manufactures from labeling their sunscreens as “broad spectrum” or

making claims about protecting against skin cancer and aging unless they’re SPF 15 or higher. And sunscreens with lower SPF values will have to sport a warning that the product may not offer protection against the harmful effects of exposure to the sun. Third, apply 1 ounce of sunscreen to the entire body 30 minutes before going outside. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, for full SPF protection, sunscreen must be applied half an hour before sun exposure. If you are average size, you’ll need a full ounce -- or about two tablespoons -- to adequately cover your skin. Studies show that most people apply less than half that amount, losing the full benefit of the SPF protection. Reapplication is just as important as putting sunscreen on in the first place, as sunscreens tend to break down with exposure and can be rubbed off or washed off by sweat or water. So sunscreen should be applied every two hours, and immediately after swimming or a set of tennis. During a full day at the beach, one person should expect to use at least a quarter of an 8 oz. bottle of sunscreen. Fourth, do not let yourself burn. Sunburn is the most immediate and obvious sign of UV damage. When immune cells race to the injured skin site to start healing the damage, they produce the reddening and swelling. Tanning is the skin’s response to this damage and may permanently

affect skin cells. While many believe a “base tan” will prevent damaging burns, that’s not the case. There is no such thing as a healthy or base tan. Finally, check your skin regularly and ask your doctor for a skin cancer exam annually. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer. Tans and burns can be the first step. Intermittent but intense UV exposure is more closely associated with melanoma, the most deadly variety of skin cancer, than chronic sun exposure. One blistering sunburn in childhood or five in a lifetime doubles the risk of melanoma. To check yourself for signs of skin damage, inspect your skin from head to toe, looking for spots or sores that heal too slowly, new growths, and any moles or beauty marks that change in color, texture, or size. And once each year, be sure to ask your physician for a skin checkup. Sunscreens are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. They keep skin looking young and reduce the risk of many skin cancers. Heather Denison Wins Mrs. California-America 2014 By Mike Kallay Photo by William Casper The married women of California will be represented at the Mrs. America® competition by Heather Denison of Glendora who was crowned Mrs. California-America 2014. Mrs. America® is scheduled to take place at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort, AZ on August 29, 2014 Some of the most beautiful and accomplished married women from across the State of California met for 2014 Mrs. California-America which took place at the Hilton Palm Springs Resort on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The distinguished judging panel had a difficult decision to make and any one of the competitors could have been selected. Before a large audience of supporters, family and friends for all the competitors, Heather Denison captured the coveted title of Mrs. California-America 2014. Her Court includes Dawn Rodrigues, Kati Vander Pol-Legnon, Lindsay Closson and Kena Strohmeier. Heather enjoys public speaking, and works as on-air talent. She has worked as a host for the Off-Road Expo, a model and panel speaker for a series of videos on eHow.com, and serves as a live emcee for the National American Miss organization. She has a master’s degree in education from Whitter College and uses her

degree to inspire young minds and the leaders of tomorrow. Heather is a fifth grade Math and Science teacher in Pasadena with thirty-nine students. Heather says she enjoys serving as a positive role model for her students, and loves showing young girls that it is cool to be interested in the field of Mathematics and Science. She is interested in the study of Expectancy Theory, which states that children rise to the level of the expectations of their care providers. She strives to set high ethical and academic expectations for all of her students to promote their success. Heather provides opportunities for her students to serve in their community. She hopes to promote a world-view which includes giving selflessly to those in need. Heather hopes to enable her students to feel the personal pride when their strengths impact the world around them. As a community service project this year, Heather and her students held a collection drive for the Vietnam Veterans of America. Heather’s fifth grade students also serve as the site leaders at their elementary school for Operation Santa Paws, an annual collection drive to benefit homeless dogs and cats. Heather also volunteers for Best Friends Animal Society and works their mobile adoption events. Heather volunteers her time with a

national organization to help support young women who are fighting the battle with eating disorders. She is makes herself available 24 hours a day for support and guidance while these young women are on their way to recovery. Heather enjoys pageantry because it promotes development of poise and confidence. As a child, Heather was shy and reserved. She says pageantry helped her to find her inner confidence and build her public speaking skills. The years of practice offered many opportunities for her to discover her strengths and unique passion for service. She says, “Women involved in pageantry are some of the most selfless, hardworking people I know. They leave a legacy of service and serve as positive role models for today’s youth. This is a great thing for society when many celebrities in the media are leading our younger generations morally astray and to a less-fulfilling life. Pageantry builds on positive values and encourages young women to promote charitable causes and help other people.” As a firm believer in life-long education, Heather loves pageants for married women because they encourage women to continue developing their strengths and personal growth into their later years. Heather is looking forward to

Heather and her husband Chris live in Southern California with their rescue dog, Chloe. Chris is a Hollywood stuntman and serves as the Editor-inChief of Dirt Rider magazine in Orange County. Their favorite pastime is personal defense training. They also enjoy cycling and hiking in the Angeles National Forest. Heather’s other hobbies include reading, cooking, and cake decorating.

Mercy House “Living With Heart” Gala Nets Over $200,000 Mercy House Living Centers attracted more than 300 guests to the Fairmont, Newport Beach Hotel for its ninth annual fundraising gala “Living with Heart.” The event netted over $200,000, including $55,000 raised by the auctions and $79,000 (more than $20,000 higher than goal) by the “Raise Your Heart” pledges. “What an amazing night! I am so grateful to all of our volunteers and supporters. They are such a big part of the reason why Mercy House is such a special organization” said Executive Director Larry Haynes. “We exceeded our goals on so many levels, but it was particularly gratifying to incorporate the dignified and strong voices of our clients into the evening.” For the first time, Mercy House introduced one of its clients, Christina Brown, who courageously stood before the audience and put the realities of homelessness into perspective by telling her story. She then introduced a video that captured the stories of other clients whose lives have been transformed by Mercy House. The evening began on the terrace for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction (which was accomplished using cell phone technology), and then into the ballroom for dinner and the program. Bill Rogers, familiar to all as “the Voice of Disneyland,” acted as master of ceremonies. The LIVE auction is always a thrill, with packages up for grabs – folks were bidding like crazy. There were many items up on the auction block but the most notable items that went to the highest bidder were an Angels Game Suite for the Seattle Mariners vs the Angels and $500 Visa Card; Tim Engvall of Tracy Industries, Inc. won that for $4,750. Barbara Wall took home the Mountain Elegance package for $4,200 which is a one week resort vacation in majestic Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Castle in the Canadian Rockies a 5 day, 4 night experience at the world famous Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, located in the heart of Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was picked up for $4,250 by Mladen and Jennifer Buntich and Michele Turner was the lucky winner of the San Diego Chargers “Photographer for a Day” package for $5,000. Guests also enjoyed a variety of scrumptious delights – starting with a White corn bisque soup with warm Camembert beignets and micro-basil sprouts. The entrée brought a Cedar plank smoked salmon brushed with Fireweed Honey and a roasted beef tenderloin with Chive blossom whipped potatoes. An assorted Cheese Course was offered with a selection of imported and domestic cheeses along with Fairmont Rooftop Honey and dried fruits, dark malt wheat bread with herb and plain crackers. A dessert to brag about was the Bambu Garden Evening Soiree - heart shaped chocolate truffles with vanilla and pink strawberry sponge cake and Grand Marnier flambéed strawberries with whipped cream and assorted toppings – oh my my! After dinner, guests gathered in the Bamboo Garden to enjoy special interactive dessert bars and live entertainment from accomplished and versatile producer, composer and musician Terry Wollman and acclaimed songstress, Melanie Taylor. Mercy House is a Santa Ana based non-profit 501c(3) organization that provides housing and comprehensive supportive services for some of the most vulnerable homeless populations including families, adult men and women, mothers and their children, persons living with HIV/AIDS, and veterans. Seeing the need in our community to serve the poor and the homeless, Mercy House was founded in 1988 by Father Jerome T. Karcher. Elks Lodge and city of Mission Viejo announce the funding of Free Vision Testing Event

With partial funding from the city of Mission Viejo, Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge No. 2444 (“Elks Lodge”) will be hosting and funding the first citywide free vision testing for youths on August 17, 2014 from noon to 5 pm. The Better Vision for Children Foundation (“BVCF”) will conduct a series of free pre-school vision

screenings for city resident youths aged 6 months to 5 years old. This age group is at risk of the common “Lazy Eye” blindness. This comprehensive vision screening, utilizing technology developed by NASA, can help prevent blindness, dyslexia and serious complications from eye cancer. The testing can also detect the early need for eye

glasses. To continue the ongoing city wide free vision screenings program, BVCF needs sponsors and volunteers as soon as possible. It’s summertime. Better weather some how makes more opportunities to knock teeth out. Here’s what to do. If a baby tooth Dr. Michael Tessier gets knocked out, there’s not much that can be done. The adult teeth will be replacing them soon anyway. There are procedures to replace avulsed (knocked out) baby teeth for parents that are interested. It’s more likely that a baby tooth will me knocked way out of alignment, like pushed back into the mouth, but, amazingly, they migrate back to where they belong without any help. When an adult tooth is knocked out, most likely a front tooth because of the shape of the root, the most important factor for healing is immediate (less than five minutes) re-implantation; holding the tooth by the enamel part-the crown, rinse it off, stick it back in the hole, then hold it there until professional help can be contacted. There’s probably already pain, and fear, and bleeding, so any additional discomfort won’t be that noticeable. The first person prepared to re-implant the tooth should do

LAGUNA ART MUSEUM PRESENTS JOHN ALTOON: DRAWINGS AND PRINTS & CALIFORNIA LANDSCAPE ARTIST REX BRANDT June 29-September 21, 2014 Laguna Art Museum presents John Altoon: Drawings and Prints.This exhibition is curated by Laguna Art Museum’s Curator of Contemporary Art Grace Kook-Anderson and is on display in the museum’s upstairs gallery. It is timed to coincide with the major exhibition of Altoon’s work at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art this summer. John Altoon (1925-1969) is best known as a painter, but drawing was an important aspect of his working practice throughout his career. Like his paintings, his drawings show a remarkable boldness, speed, and ability to improvise. This intimate exhibition of drawings and prints looks at Altoon’s hesitation between being a commercial illustrator and a

fine artist. On the commercial side, he made illustrations for articles in magazines such as Caper and Escapade. He also designed album covers and in 1956 was included in Pacific Jazz’s “West Coast Artist Series” along with Robert Irwin, Sueo Serisawa, and Keith Finch. By the early 1960s, Altoon’s work as a fine artist was his priority. Even as his style became more abstract, elements of the figure and the importance of line were evident throughout. John Altoon was born and raised in Los Angeles, the son of Armenian parents who had emigrated from Turkey. While still a teenager, he joined the Navy and went to the Pacific to participate in major military campaigns before the end of World War II. When he returned, he studied at the Otis Art Institute and the Chouinard Art Institute. In 1950 he moved to Santa Barbara, where his work caught the attention of the director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Donald Bear. This led to an exhibition, although Altoon moved to New York just before the opening. In New York, he worked as both a commercial and a fine artist for four years. In 1954, he received a grant that helped him travel to Europe. He returned to Los Angeles in 1956 and the following year became one of the founding members of the Ferus Gallery with Ed Kienholz and Walter Hopps. In 1962 the innovative abstract paintings of his Ocean Park Series led to an exhibition at the

Whitney Museum that circulated to several other museums the following year. Altoon died of a massive heart attack in 1969, at the age of fortythree. A retrospective exhibition of the paintings of California landscape artist Rex Brandt (1914–2000) in its main level galleries.The exhibition is curated by Laguna Art Museum’s Curator of Historical Art Janet Blake. Rex Brandt gained national renown for his watercolor paintings during the period from the mid 1930s to the 1990s. As a dedicated teacher of the watercolor medium, he conducted painting workshops both at his home in Corona del Mar, his summer home in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington, and at several international locations. Brandt published more than ten books on watercolor painting, including The Winning Ways of Watercolor. Although he painted with other media (including oil, to which he developed an allergy), he preferred watercolor, which he considered to be the most expressive and the perfect vehicle to paint “light and air.” The exhibition consists of approximately fifty paintings, and is accompanied by a fully illustrated scholarly catalogue. The title of the exhibition is his own, from a 1991 privatelypublished pamphlet he wrote that was illustrated with nine paintings. In it he acknowledged sunshine as the essential theme of his long career. He

wrote: “Whether we are conscious of it or not, everything in the perceived world is in motion. Sunshine is the mediator, a pervasive quality in which things are lost and found, emerge and recede…” Rexford Elson Brandt was born in San Diego in 1914. He grew up in Riverside and attended Riverside Junior College and the University of California, Berkeley, receiving his degree in 1936. The art department at Berkeley was decidedly modernist, in part a legacy of the German abstract artist and teacher Hans Hofmann, who taught there in the summers of 1930 and 1931. There is plenty to see and do this week as the Festival of Arts California’s premier fine art show continues in Laguna Beach. Family Art Day will take place on Saturday, July 19 from noon-3 p.m. Activities will include: Ceramics in the Art Center; “Art Quest” – an art exhibit treasure hunt where kids will answer kid-friendly questions by investigating different exhibits throughout the grounds; a marionette show, face painting, balloon art, hat making and a free lunch for the kids. On Sunday, July 20 from 1-8 p.m., the Aulani Hawaiian Craft Workshop will take place. Join us as we discover a beautiful ancient Hawaiian art, and create a keepsake in print. The ‘hearing bone’s’ connected to the what?

Studies show that hearing loss is connected to other health conditions. Once upon a time, before people knew any better, they thought that hearing loss was simply a part of growing older - something not worth doing much about. They were wrong. Turns out, hearing loss isn’t fussy about age. More than half of us with hearing loss are still in the workforce. And hearing loss is a much bigger deal than we ever imagined. We need to take it seriously. As one of the most common chronic health conditions in the United States today, hearing loss affects baby boomers, Gen Xers and every other age group. And, when left unaddressed, hearing loss affects just about every aspect of a person’s life. The big surprise is that hearing loss has been linked to other health conditions. Hearing loss can have unwelcome companions - like heart disease; diabetes; chronic kidney disease; depression; cognitive decline, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease; increased risk of falling; increased hospitalizations. In fact, as studies on the link between hearing loss and other

health conditions mount, we’ve begun to see how our ears - and specifically how our hearing - connect to our whole body and health. Here’s what we know: The very best thing to do for hearing loss is to find out if you have it as soon as possible. Then take it seriously. If deemed appropriate by a qualified hearing health care professional, treat it. Hearing aids can benefit the vast majority of people with hearing loss. Cardiovascular and hearing health are connected. Studies show that a healthy cardiovascular system positively affects hearing. Conversely, inadequate blood flow and trauma to the blood vessels of the inner ear can contribute to hearing loss. Some experts even believe that because the inner ear is so sensitive to blood flow, it is possible that abnormalities in the cardiovascular system could be noted here earlier than in other less sensitive parts of the body - making the ear a kind of “window to the heart.” People with diabetes are about twice as likely to have hearing loss as those without it. Recent studies show a link between hearing loss and dementia, leading many experts to stress the importance of addressing hearing loss. One study found that seniors

with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. Another found that hearing loss is associated with accelerated cognitive decline in older adults, and that those with hearing loss are more likely to develop problems thinking and remembering than older adults whose hearing is normal. Peo p l e who d on ’ t address hearing loss are more prone to depression. Fortunately, studies show that people with hearing loss who use hearing aids often have fewer depressive symptoms, greater social engagement, and improved quality of life. Hearing loss is tied to a three-fold risk of falling. One study found that even people with mild hearing loss were nearly three times more likely to have a history of falling. A study of older adults showed that those with moderate chronic kidney disease had a higher prevalence of hearing loss than those of the same age without the disease. Hospitalization is more likely for older adults with hearing loss than for their peers with normal hearing, according to a study by experts at Johns Hopkins. A 2013-published study found that

older men with hearing loss had a greater risk of dying, particularly from cardiovascular causes. But men and women who used hearing aids - even though they were older and had more severe hearing loss - had a significantly lower mortality risk than those with hearing loss who did not use hearing aids. Most doctors don’t include hearing health as a routine part of annual exams. So ask to have your hearing tested. Once you reach middle-age, it makes sense to include hearing tests as part of your routine annual care. It seems that the “hearing bone” may be connected to more than we originally thought. Water is hidden in diets, in the energy used and the products purchased. Every pair of jeans worn or hamburger consumed is created using water in some capacity. That’s why water conservation, no matter where you live, is a global necessity. The Colorado River brings this global issue home. Stretching across seven states, it serves more than 30 million people-- or nearly 10 percent of Americans - for their freshwater

needs. But it no longer reaches the sea, with the last 90 miles nearly all dried up. In fact, it was named the “Most Endangered River in America,” by conservation group American Rivers. Many businesses and organizations are setting up water conservation projects and asking for your help for the Colorado River, among other water efforts. Silk(R), the brand known for its best-selling soymilk, almondmilk and coconutmilk, has joined forces with National Geographic Society, Bonneville Environmental Foundation and Participant Media on Change the Course, a group project to conserve fresh water and preserve the ecological health of the heavilydammed, diverted and overused Colorado River. To help raise awareness of the Change the Course movement, Silk is challenging people to pledge to reduce water consumption at ReuniteTheRiver.com. Each pledge made will restore 1,000 gallons of water to the Colorado River, working to make the river healthy again. of the depleted Colorado River. The expansive art installation, totaling 32 feet by 64 feet of space, offers a visual understanding of the depleted Colorado River to help raise awareness for water conservation efforts. Unveiled in downtown Chicago in June, the installation drew hordes of people and led to nearly 1,000 new pledges. In addition to efforts by businesses such as Silk, homeowners can also help contribute to water conservation efforts by making simple lifestyle changes such as: * Appliance use - The toilet, washing machine and dishwasher are among the highest water-consuming appliances in a household. Only run the washing machine and dishwasher when full to make the most use of the water being consumed. Manufacturers of these appliances have made great strides in developing new technologies that consume less water. For example, there are toilets that use less than two gallons of water per flush. * Gardening and lawn care - Most landscaping plants only need an inch of water each week. If there is a sprinkler system installed, add a

sensor to it that turns the sprinkler on only when rain hasn’t fallen for a set amount of time. Installing a rain gauge in the yard or edge of the flower bed can help accurately measure how much water has fallen in a week.
