How to choose a high quality swimsuit The only thing worse than choosing the wrong swimsuit for your shape is finding the perfect swimsuit and have it fall apart before a full season of wear. These tips will help you become a savvy swimsuit shopper that knows how to choose a bathing suit that is perfect for your body shape and one that will last throughout the summer. Full Fabric Lining A swimsuit with a full fabric lining will prevent anything from showing through the fabric and preserve the bathing suit’s shape. A swimsuit that only has a few spots lined will bunch up in those lined areas and give a bumpy appearance after a few washings. Also look for a suit that has the same color lining as the outer fabric. The color matched fabric will camouflage any spots where the lining may peek through while you’re suited up. Lycra is Your Friend Lycra provides the support of a friend, to both your body and the swimsuit. Look for a bathing suit that contains at least 18% lycra so it will retain its shape through a multitude of launderings and the lycra content will smooth out your shape while you’re wearing suit. The greater lycra con-
R
tent, the more holding power the suit will have on unwieldy body parts, but the suit will also be more difficult to get in and out of, especially when wet. Double Stitched Durability To prevent things from popping open and popping out while you’re frolicking in the water, look for double stitching on the swimsuit’s key stress points. The points where the front and back of straps are attached to suit’s
bodice should be double stitched, as should all other strap connections. Bottoms with elastic waist bands should be double stitched around the waist bands too. Layer upon Layer Layers hide figure flaws and add details to a swimsuit. Skirts, shirring and drapes are great for helping us to accentuate the positive and downplay the negative. Just note that the more
fabric a bathing suit has, the longer it will take to dry. Layering (or some other decorative detail) on the top will make things appear bigger than they really are and draw attention towards the upper body. Camouflaging a problem bottom half is often done best with a separate sarong or wrap. The sarong can be worn (or removed) as needed and be kept dry.

Next Saturday sees the start of a nine day tall ship adventure for 26 Orange county teenagers! All of the youth are members of Mariners 936 sea scouts based in Dana Point Harbor. They will be sailing on The Spirit of Dana Point , a traditionally built, accurate replica of a 1770’s privateer used during the American Revolution, which is owned by the Ocean Institute. According to Jim “Skip” Wehan, leader of the Mariner program and Captain of the tall ship, this voyage is the highlight of the Mariner year. The itinerary includes visits to remote coves in the Channel Islands National Park on Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands and brief stopovers in Santa Barbara Harbor and Catalina Island. Wehan reports that sailing a 118 foot replica from the early nineteenth century is a very unique experience requiring a great deal of teamwork. In addition, he points out, there are many fun activities for adventurous youth including hiking, kayaking and snorkeling on and
around these spectacular islands . This awesome experience often results in bonding and formation of lifelong friendships. Participants prepare for the cruise year round with sail and maintenance training on Saturdays as well as classroom instruction on Wednesday evenings. The youth will serve as crew members to man the sailing vessel under the supervision of a professional crew. The more experienced of the group will assume responsibilities as junior officers; emphasis on youth leadership is weaved into all Mariner activities. All cruise participants will be assigned to one of three crews serving around the clock watches led by youth officers. Some have spent as many as six years in the program, honing their maritime skills in preparation for their duties as officers, and in keeping with the Mariner motto “Where we go one, there we go all”, they will be expected to pass on their knowledge to the younger Mariners on board. For graduating seniors this may be their
last Mariner adventure before starting college in the fall. Although most will continue sailing for recreation and fun, some will be heading to the Maritime Academy in the fall with the intent of turning their love for the sea into a career. Based out of the County Facility known as the Sailing and Conference Center, Mariners is in it’s 35th year of operation providing ocean experience and training to the youth of Orange County. The program depends on the expertise of 40 adult volunteers and utilizes a fleet of vessels ranging from eight to thirty eight feet in length. Youth in two distinct programs learn basic through advanced maritime skills in a club atmosphere that is largely youth led under adult supervision. The coed program for 12 and 13 year olds is known as Mariner Juniors while the program for youth ages 14 through high school is known as Mariners. Further information is available on the Mariner Web Site mariners936.com. Upcoming events can also be seen on Facebook.

William and Kate name Britain’s new royal heir George By Costas Pitas (Reuters) Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate have chosen three traditional royal names by calling their new-born baby boy George Alexander Louis, William’s office said on Wednesday. The baby, born on Monday to global media frenzy and third in line to the British throne, will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge, Kensington Palace said in a statement. All three names had been among the favorites listed by British bookmakers, and the announcement was relatively quick by royal standards; it took a month for the name of Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, to be announced, and a week for William, his eldest son. George has been the name of six British kings. The last, George VI, was the father of Queen Elizabeth and reigned from 1936 to 1952. Alexandra, the female form of Alexander, is one of the queen’s middle names, and was also the name of the queen consort of King Edward VII at the start of the last century. Louis is one of William’s middle names, and was the given name of Prince Charles’s mentor and greatuncle Louis Mountbatten, who was assassinated by Irish nationalist IRA guerrillas in 1979. The baby’s arrival on Monday
triggered frenetic coverage from global media who had camped for days on the doorstep of the London hospital where he was born, as well as celebratory gun salutes and the illumination of London landmarks in blue. The choice of name, relatively short by royal standards, does not necessarily mean the baby will eventually become King George VII. The queen’s father was christened Albert, but chose to be crowned as George VI. “It’s interesting that they chose to go with just three names. It’s almost as if the royal family is coming down with ordinary people, who tend to have fewer middle names than monarchs,” historian Suzannah Lipscomb, told Sky News. “It is a name that none can find any problems with. George itself can’t be shortened in any obvious offensive way ... They’ve probably gone for something that is safe.” Some commentators said the names appeared to have no direct connection to Kate’s side of the family. “They’ve kept it very simple by not trying to represent all parts of the family,” royal historian Tracy Borman told Sky News. “I think there seems to be genuine joy, warmth and good feeling about this birth and the duke and duchess are so popular. People will be nothing
but pleased.” The interest stirred by the birth has given a further boost to the royal family after the public’s enthusiastic celebration last year of Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne, and Kate and William’s lavish Westminster Abbey wedding in 2011. The monarchy’s popularity sank to a low in the 1990s after a string of divorces and the death of William’s mother, Diana, after which many said the royal family’s response made it appear out of touch with public sentiment. The left-leaning Guardian newspaper described the turnaround as “an incredible recovery”, although its website offered readers a ‘Republican’ button to block out royal stories. Most British newspapers devoted their front pages to big pictures of Tuesday’s first photocall, with headlines such as “Hello World” and “Our Little Prince”. But after weeks of fevered coverage, the couple are expected to try to keep a low profile. They spent Wednesday at Kate’s parents’
home in the village of Bucklebury, in southern England. The royal couple have been living in a remote part of Wales, where William works as a rescue helicopter pilot, but are expected to move later this year to London’s Kensington Palace, William’s childhood home. Royal observers say William is determined to shield his son from the obsessive attention that plagued his mother Diana, pursued relentlessly by the media and killed in a car crash in 1997 after her car was chased by photographers. “William knows only too well that his baby son will be the new favorite creature in the circus he grew up in,” wrote Daily Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson. “Every plan he and Kate have put in place is to protect him.”

Riesling: Oregon’s Best Kept Secret HAPPY GRAPES
By David White If you play word association with a wine enthusiast and throw out the word “Oregon,” chances are pretty high that the response will be “Pinot Noir.” For good reason. In the 1960s, a handful of young vintners moved to the state, all passionate about wine and eager to be a part of something new. Within a decade, those who believed Oregon’s climate would be too cold and wet for grapes were proven
wrong when a Pinot Noir from one of those trailblazers, David Lett, took home gold at the 1979 Wine Olympics in Paris. Over the next 30 years, hundreds of winemakers set up shop in Oregon, eager to produce world-class Pinot Noir. Today, the state’s wine industry promotes itself with posters and other promotional items that say “Drink Pinot, Think Oregon.” But while Lett and other pioneers were focusing on Pinot Noir, a number of other vintners were giving it a go with Riesling. Indeed, about a quarter of Oregon’s vineyards were planted to Riesling in 1980. As Pinot Noir acreage exploded, however, Riesling became overshadowed. Today, though, Oregon Riesling is experiencing a resurgence. And it’s better than ever. Many consumers recoil at the sight of Riesling, as it’s still associated with the sweet, simple German wines of yesteryear, like Blue Nun. Wines like these are still produced and they’ll always have fans. But they do a dis-
service to true Riesling. It’s not by accident that Riesling has long been known as the “noblest of the noble grapes.” For one thing, Riesling is honest. Because most Riesling is fermented in stainless steel, it isn’t manipulated through oak aging or other winemaking techniques. So it’s remarkably transparent and excels in capturing terroir, or a wine’s sense of place. As Robert Parker, the world’s most famous wine critic, once explained, “If you want to talk about terroir, talk about German Rieslings or Alsace Rieslings, where the wines are naked -- there’s no makeup.” Riesling is also quite versatile. Some of the world’s best Rieslings are syrupy and lusciously sweet, while others are bone dry. Most fall somewhere in between, and all are extremely fragrant. And thanks to its high acidity, Riesling is an extremely adaptable food wine. Misconceptions still abound, but fortunately, consumers are starting to recognize that Riesling is a seri-
ous grape. I recently tasted through a dozen Oregon Rieslings and was impressed with all them. One bottle worth finding is Chehalem’s “Three Vineyard Riesling.” Marked by exotic citrus fruits, green apples, and chalk-like minerality, the wine is exceptionally vibrant. Other wines worth looking for include Amity Vineyards’ Wedding Dance Riesling, Penner-Ash’s Willamette Valley Riesling, and Elk Cove’s Estate Riesling. All are refreshing and delicious, offering delicate notes of citrus fruits and apples. These four wines do have quite a bit of residual sugar, but they almost taste dry because they’re balanced by bracing acidity. Plus, they’re affordable. While these producers are known for their Pinot Noir -- many of which cost upwards of $50 per bottle -- these Rieslings can be found for right around $20. Riesling might be Oregon’s best kept secret. So make sure you try some before the word gets out.

Six Fabulous Swimsuits for Summer 2013 Now that summer is here, it is time to re-evaluate the swimwear in your wardrobe. Most women like to purchase a new swimsuit each year as a fashion update. For this summer season, paisleys, florals, and coral are the favorites, in both bold and pastel colors. Of course, swimsuit styles remain in a wide selection, from bikinis to tankinis and the classic one-piece. Here are the top six swimsuit picks for the summer 2013 season: Here is a monokini that a mermaid will envy! Of course, you will feel like a mermaid wearing it, too, with its soft aqua color, paisley and floral pattern
in pastels that echo the 1960’s. Designed by Trina Turk, this monokini is called Sea Cove and has a halter neckline, ties at the neckline and back waist. It’s the side cutouts that really make this swimsuit so appealing and sexy, exposing just enough skin around the sides and back. Available from Neiman Marcus for $148.00.
the swimming pool. Strapless with support in front, this tankini will get you lots of compliments this summer season. Available from Bloomingdale’s for $82.00.
Kaleidoscopes were fun to play with when I was a child, and this swimsuit will get eyes gazing up and down your figure as you take in some sun on the beach. Not for the shy woman, this one-piece swimsuit designed by Tyr Huntington has a pink, blue, aqua, and black kaleidoscope pattern, has full coverage across the front, and black piping along the edges for a clean look. Available from Dillard’s for $59.99.
For ladies who prefer tankinis, this Ralph Lauren one will flatter any figure without compromising style. Called Seaside Paisley, the turquoise blue nylon fabric with a blue and white paisley pattern here is vibrant enough to stand out at the beach - or
For the woman who prefers bikinis that make a statement, this Bendito Popcorn swimsuit is sexy with just a hint of corset styling in it. Imagine showing off corset lacing at the beach without having physical discomfort involved! dazzling bikini. Available from Swimwear Boutique for $153.75. Purple always looks fabulous in a swimsuit. This South Beach triangle-cut bikini has minimal coverage and is very sexy. The style comes in other colors and patterns too, but purple has always been a favorite of mine. Wearing a French-cut bikini at the beach will make you look like a million dollars. Available from Two Coconuts for $57.50. Picture yourself swimming among the coral reefs in this stunning one-piece strapless swimsuit by Bantu. The pink and orange reef print against a taupe background is so unique, yet seems like it should be a common theme for swimwear but isn’t. While everyone else is wearing flowers and paisley this summer season, you can go for the gold with a reef print. Available from Barney’s for $185.00.

Local Events Help Military with Raising Spirits and Money Cast of Sons of Anarchy pose with a Marine who re-enlisted right after This week I had the privilege of attending two events that paid tribute to being discharged. (photo by Andrea Gallagher Photography) our Military. The first one was at Hamilton Oaks Winery San Juan with the Boot Campaign; the second event was at the City National Grove of Anaheim with the Semper Fi Fund. Starting with the Boot Campaign, Hamilton Oaks Winery San Juan Capistrano was the setting as over 100 Marines from Camp Pendleton and their families were invited to a full blown BBQ dinner, music and fun hosted by the FX Channel and their hit show “Sons of Anarchy”. The vineyard was the perfect place to host these families as the children were able to run around on the grass, get their faces painted, enjoy balloon animals along with pop corn and cotton candy. Bad to the Bone BBQ in San Juan Capistrano served a true backyard bar-b-que feast for the event. The marines had a great time with their families, but what they did not know was the surprise visit from the Sons of Anarchy cast, Theo Rossi aka “Juan Carlos ‘Juice’ Ortiz”, Kim Coats aka “Alex ‘Tig’ Trager”, and Mark Boone Junior aka “Robert ‘Bobby’ Munson”. All three came riding up on their motorcycles as the set was staged for a promotional filming for the hit show as well. The event was staged for the Marines paying tribute to them as well as giving awareness to the Boot Campaign with the cast members helping out The Brotherhood of United States Marine Corps Riders came out to by signing autographs and taking photos with everyone. Talking with Theo, show their support for the Boot Campaign at Hamilton Oaks Winery Kim and Mark afterwards, they told me they are honored to help out in any San Juan. Active duty or retired Marines and Navy Corpsman make up way they can and are proud being a part of the Boot Campaign; they also this group that raise funds for the Semper Fi Fund as well. (photo by travel around the world visiting different Military Bases showing their support. Andrea Gallagher Photography) The Boot Campaign encourages everyone to “get their boots on” by providing an easy and tangible way for Americans to show their appreciation for our troops, cultivate awareness of the challenges they face upon return and raise funds for military programs meeting the physical and emotional needs of our heroes. They’re next event with the SOA is August 25th with the Boot Ride; more information can be found at www.BootCampaign.com. Get your boots on! At the City National Grove of Anaheim, about 300 active and retired members of local law enforcement, fire and military personnel were at the 5th Annual SafetyHeroes.org fundraiser. Notable attendees including Ted Nugent, Leigh Steinberg, and Davey Lind along with SafetyHeroes.org Founder and event producer, Mark Peacock of Newport Beach, all delivered moving presentations and over $20,000 was raised in support of the cause. SafetyHeroes.org Founder, Mark J. Peacock of Newport Beach opened the evening welcoming guests and introducing members of Semper Fi Fund with a touching video detailing the organizations efforts. Double leg amputee, MSgt Davey Lind, USMC (Ret), presented his personal story and how Semper Fi Davey Lind with Ted Nugent and Mark Peacock, founder of SafetyHeFund provided priceless assistance in his recovery process. Notable Sports Agent, Leigh Steinberg, also spoke about the importance of supporting those ros.org (photo by Chad Yanagisawa) injured in the line of duty and their families. American guitar legend and activist, Ted Nugent, made a special appearance and presentation to Semper Fi Fund prior to his concert at the City National Grove later that evening. While talking with Nugent, he told me he’s humbled by the military families and their sacrifices they make, “It takes a special specimen to see a fire and race towards it...they bring a spirit of righteousness...that’s a unique attribute that only a small percentage qualify for, and I don’t qualify, but if I qualify to be among them, there’s no words to describe how cool that is.” Multiple Taylor guitars, original artwork and other collectible items signed by Ted Nugent were part of the silent auction that helped raise funds for the cause. Other bidding items included sports lessons and outdoors activities donated by various Olympic athletes that were in attendance at the event including two-time USA Olympic kayaking team member, Cathy Marino and Olympic track cyclist, Connie Paraskevin among others. The Semper Fi Fund directs urgently needed resources to post 9 11 members of the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard who serve in support of Marine forces. The non-profit provides relief for financial hardships that arise during hospitalization and recovery as well as assistance for those Jessie Wackerman, Adam Thaete, Taylor Adams, and Kyle Martin support with perpetuating needs. local Dentist michael tessier says Dental exams prevent Disease by early Detection M a n y readers will be pleased to learn that routine dental examinations not only eliminate most of the future dental problems, but may Dr. Michael Tessier often quickly identify and lead to the prevention of cancer of the mouth throat, head and neck. Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and pharynx accounts for over 34,000 cases per year in the U.S.75% of all head and neck cancers begin in the oral cavity, with 30% of those originating on the tongue, 17% in the lip, and 14% in the floor of the mouth.75% of these cancers are related to alcohol and tobacco use, but a significant 25% occur in non-smokers or non-drinkers. The rise of HPV positive individuals among younger, non-smoking patients under the age of 50 is the fastest growing segment of the oral cancer population. Cancer, itself, is not contagious, but the human papilloma virus is contagious, but the lesions of several strains have a predisposition to become cancerous.” But” says Dr. Tessier, “regular checkups from your dentist keep you free from these diseases and give you a sparkling smile as a bonus. Like all diseases, early detection is a big key to control and cure. When our office cleans and examines your teeth every six months,
that’s a great opportunity to do a soft tissue exam, along with examining the teeth, the bite, and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condition. We look for changes or irregularities in the soft tissue, spots, white patches, or raised (hyperplastic) tissue areas. We carefully check for lumps deeper in the tissues, in the lips or cheek tissues. “Of course we always give your tongue a close examination, particularly the sides of your tongue,” says Dr. Tessier. “We routinely and carefully examine the tongue with a mouth mirror and having our patient say, “Ahhh”, not “Ehhh”, allows better visualization of the back of the throat. And, the doctor adds” the lymph nodes should be checked to see If there is cancer growing somewhere- a malignancy- in the head and neck region. The lymph nodes will try to collect or filter the metastasizing cells out of the blood-stream. They will become swollen, sometimes visually apparent, and/or tender to the touch. There are lymph nodes along the border of the lower jaw, or a chain of them running down the front of the neck, or more at the base of the skull. Early detection is the name of the game,.” We’re all living longer, and we’ll need good health to achieve that.. So it is my pleasure to have all of these good things we can do to make that happen. It’s better to have teeth left at the end of your life, rather than life left at the end of your teeth. FESTIVAL ARTISTS MIX THINGS UP AT THURSDAY ART TALK LAGUNA BEACH, CA — July 23, 2013 — The Festival of Arts continues its weekly Thursday Art Talk series with Mixed Media Artists Carolyn Machado and Mia Moore on Thursday, August 1 from 12 – 1pm. The discussion will be focused on how artists find and use inspiration in their work. Both artists have exhibited at the Festival of Arts since the early 90’s. Festival Ballet Gala of the Stars - August 16 Festival Ballet will present a star-studded cast in our Sixth Annual Gala of the Stars, and you won’t want to miss the chance to see these amazing dancers! Yesterday we introduced you to Isabella Boylston and Daniil Simkin from American Ballet Theatre, who will dance in FBT’s 2013 Gala in August. Today we feature the amazing NYCB dancers, Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild. Each day this week, we will introduce you artists who will perform in the Gala. Stay tuned for updates this week and throughout the weeks leading to this exciting event! What the experts are saying: “[Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild are] two of the company’s most musical dancers... Both move with scintillating clarity mixed with a jazzy sense of all-American informality. Fairchild is a charmer, all heart, all energy and unending devotion to his ballerina. Peck is something greater: a dancer who exudes the kind of physical control that permits total freedom. Nothing is forced, nothing unfinished.” Marina Harss; DanceTabs, New York “Robert Fairchild and Tiler Peck are the future of classical ballet, and it’s a real coup that they will be dancing in this production,” Warren Carlyle said. “It will be a beautiful evening about the music with one special moment of dance.” ArtsNewsDesk, New York “All the dancers are wonderful, but the real Page 16
standouts are Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild. Fairchild’s timing, his rhythm, the snap of his fingers - all remind me of a young Fred Astaire. Tiler Peck is just perfect as the girl in pink.... Tiler Peck nails “Fascinatin’ Rhythm”. Her precision, her musicality, her phrasing - all are beyond compare. Peck’s

whiplash turns are danced at a breakneck pace. In their pas de deux to ‘The Man I Love’ Peck and Fairchild are magical. The radiant yearning of their love brings tears to my eyes.” Colleen Boresta, ballet-dance magazine (speaking about NYCB’s 2012 Gala performances)

lyon air museum summer vehicle exhibit Lyon Air Museum will host their summer vehicle exhibit showcasing seven iconic American Woodie automobiles. It’s only appropriate that these prime icons of American summer culture kick off their debut on the 4th of July at the museum, located on the west side of John Wayne Airport in Orange County. The Woodies Exhibit, featuring Fords and Chryslers, will carry on Lyon Air Museum’s reputation for displaying fine, vintage vehicles alongside historic aircraft. Last summer brought in seven exclusive Packards and the year before, ten impeccable classic Duesenbergs. This year’s exhibit will run through August 4, 2013. The first Woodies date back to the railroads of the early 20th century, when wagons were used to transport passengers and luggage between stations and other points. These “station wagons” utilized the forward section and chassis of a production automobile, coupled with a custom, lower cost wooden body. Although initially built for commercial use, they soon became available to the general public. Woodies were often rather attractive, but were popular mainly due to their economically sound price point, especially during the Depression years of the 1930s. Cost savings were a further factor as World War II brought on shortages of steel which was in great demand for the war effort. Post World War II saw a soaring
economy, with many Americans opting for a safer, all-metal automobile. The days of the Woodie appeared to be numbered. But what propelled the Woodie to its initial popularity resurfaced in the 1960s in a whole new culture – surfing. Woodies of the past were being sought after because they were inexpensive and had a high carrying capacity. Soon spacious Woodies were toting surfers, surf boards, food and beach party gear to the best surf spots around. The scene quickly caught on to the rest of the country through movies such as Gidget and Beach Blanket Bingo, and through music by The Beach Boys and Jan and Dean with songs like Surfin’ Safari, Surf City, and Boogie Woodie, all of which referenced the Woodie and further increased its
popularity. Today, the Woodie automobile is highly desired by car collectors, and by those who yearn to cruise the coastline in a symbol of sun, sand and surf. So throw on your flip flops and cruise on over to Lyon Air Museum to catch a bit of 20th Century pop culture. Lyon Air Museum represents the fulfillment of a dream of Maj. Gen. William Lyon, USAF (Ret), who held the position of Chief of the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1975 to 1979. Currently, General Lyon is Executive Chairman of William Lyon Homes, Inc., in Newport Beach, CA. His passion for aviation history and youth education is the driving force behind Lyon Air Museum. In establishing the museum, General Lyon sought to
create a world-class facility available to the local community and offering educational displays to inspire young people. The museum has on exhibit some of the world’s rarest operational historic aircraft and vehicles. Lyon Air Museum is located at 19300 Ike Jones Road, Santa Ana, CA 92707. P: 714/210-4585. F: 714/210-4588. Email: info@ lyonairmuseum.org. Web: www. lyonairmuseum.org. Hours of operation are daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission rates: General admission--$12; Seniors and Veterans--$9; Ages 5-17--$6; Under age 5--Free. Groups of 10 or more-$1 off each visitor. Pre-arranged school groups--Free.
Lake Shasta Fishing and Vacation Information By Kimberly Sharpe Lake Shasta, nestled beside the snow-capped Mount Shasta in northern California, spans 29,500 acres and boasts 370 miles of shoreline. The lake has diverse fishing opportunities with abundant rainbow trout, brown trout, crappie, kokanee salmon, king salmon, catfish, sturgeon, bluegill, spotted bass, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Considered a true fishermen’s mecca, the lake offers boat fishing and shoreline fishing choices. The largest man-made lake in California, Lake Shasta has a maximum fishing depth of 512 feet. Construction of the lake was completed in 1945 and the lake was officially filled in 1948. Four rivers, known as arms, empty into the lake. The McCloud river, Squaw creek, Sacramento river and Pit river flow into the lake and create its unique large arms which gives Lake Shasta its irregular shoreline appearance. Innumerable mountain streams and spring runoff sites also empty into the lake. Marinas and Boat Launches Lake Shasta’s shoreline is dotted with 11 marinas. Each one offers boat docking and tackle supplies for
anglers. Around the lake fishermen will find seven public boat launches. There is a minimal fee charged to launch a boat from any of the ramps. The ever changing seasonal water level of the lake dictates which boat launches will be open. If the water level is low a few launches may be closed. The Shasta Lake Visitor Information Centers monitor and provide boaters with current boat launch information. Each boat launch features ample parking for vehicles and boat trailers. Courtesy docks are available at the boat launch site to load gear and passengers into the boat. Fishing Locations Fishermen tend to congregate around the area of the arms that empty into the lake to catch fish. The McCloud river arm draws fishermen wishing to catch brown trout, according to the California Game & Fish. The fish spawn in the McCloud river in the fall and begin to enter Shasta lake using the river’s inlet during November and December when their spawning cycle is complete. The Jones Valley provides easy fishing access with paved roads to the Pit river arm where fishermen congre-
gate to catch rainbow trout. The area features beach side camping locations, a full service campground and a public boat launch. Planted Fish Every year the California Department of Fish and Game plants over 30,000 rainbow trout into Lake Shasta. Many of the marinas around the lake also raise rainbow trout in underwater cages until they reach magnum size before releasing them into the lake. Native rainbow trout can be found congreting near the mountain streams that drain into the lake and beside the arms where
they breed. Shore Fishing The Lake Shasta area offers shoreline fishing locations. Along the Sacramento Arm, off Lancaster Drive, fishermen will find easy access to simply walk down to the shore and cast a line. The upper portions of the McCloud arm are also readily accessible on foot with trails that lead down to the shore side. Winter months offer an ideal time for shoreline trout fishing because the fish rise up along the waters surface beside the shoreline in search of food.

Family Fun Around the Grill Preparing a meal on the grill can be fun for the whole family. Gather the kids and get them involved in the meal from start to finish for an easy way to spend more quality time together. Rebecca P. Cohen, author of “15 Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids,” is a big believer in spending time outdoors together as a family. “We make a point of getting outside every day. Spending quality time as a family is important, and centering that time around an outdoor activity like grilling is a great way to do that,” says Cohen. Cohen offers some tips for enjoying fun outdoor meals with the family:
Create a topping bar – Set out a plastic tablecloth and some kid-friendly dipping sauces, condiments and toppings, such as ketchup, grated cheese, mayonnaise, hummus and more. Have the kids prepare their favorite dipping sauces and toppings and line them up in colorful bowls. Make the meal grill-friendly – Look for foods and recipes that can be prepared directly on the grill, such as New Ore-Ida® Grillers. These thick-cut, round slices of potato go from freezer to grill, where they cook in just 15 minutes and serve as a perfect side dish that goes hand in hand with your favorite toppings and dipping sauces. This way, you can spend less time inside preparing and more time outside enjoying! Make it fun – What’s a cookout without family fun? Make the most of your cook time by incorporating some simple yet fun activities. Try racing with ice cubes on your spoons or tossing a refreshing
ice cube back and forth. For more cool fun, freeze fruit juice in ice cube containers with popsicle sticks for a refreshing treat. Enjoy a grill-side snack – Plan a special late night snack with s’mores on the grill. Try flavored marshmallows like chocolate, strawberry and toasted coconut, or spice up the graham crackers with sprinkled cinnamon and sugar. Try to name the constellations while you enjoy a late night snack together under the stars. Who doesn’t want an extra fifteen minutes to spend with family and friends? Body Surfing Guide: An Easy Technique to Ride Your First Wave By Jeanne Rose Body surfing can be a very fun and enjoyable experience for someone who likes riding the waves on the beach. Body surfing is essentially when you have the ability to ride a wave with your body instead of a surfboard. You do not usually need equipment for body surfing since you are using your body, which makes it a great spontaneous thing to do. Body surfing can be very dangerous because it is not as easy as it might look so you should always have someone with you the first time. Body surfing is something everyone should do at least one time in their life if they enjoy the water and riding the waves. As with most things in life, body surfing will take time and practice in order to perfectly ride a wave. If you want to body surf but you are unsure how to go about it exactly, here are some techniques you can use to body surf. Body surfing does not require you to use any equipment, although you might want to get a pair of swimming fins. The swim fins are something you will need if you want to body surf farther out into the water, which is something you should only do after you have gotten the hang of it You can get basic swim fins or the body board-
ing swim fins at surf shops or other retail stores in the sporting goods section for about 30 dollars. If you are body surfing early in the season or in cold water you might also want to buy a wetsuit which will protect your body against the coldness of the water. Generally, a wetsuit will cost you about 50 dollars to 100 dollars depending on the brand and style. You can find a wetsuit at your local swim or surf shop or at many retail stores in the sporting goods section. If this is your first time body surfing, you want to be in the more shallow water and have someone else with you in case of an accident. You never want to try body surfing for the first time alone and you might even want to make sure a lifeguard is on duty at your location. A wave can come up and hit you very fast and take you under the water, and if you are not skilled in swimming in the ocean then you might get into trouble. The best beaches for water surfing are the beaches will shallow grades which will have more gentle waves. You can go pretty far out into the water on a beach where the waves are gentle and it is best for a beginner. You do not want to go to a beach that has a sudden drop off in the water
depth because you can really get caught in a bad wave. You want to find a wave that does not crash suddenly and that is about one to four feet in height. Do not be body surfing right on the beach; make sure you are farther out into the waters. Once you have found that perfect wave to body surf then you can focus on the technique to try to body surf correctly. You want to stand so your back is to the wave and you are facing toward the beach itself and wait until the wave is a few feet behind you. Push off from the bottom of the water and begin to move your legs like you are trying to kick. The wave will lift you off and then you want to angle your body so you are facing downward. The lower half of your body should be rising above the top half of your body. Make your body long and straight like a surfboard as you begin to slide in the wave and keep your legs together. Hold your arms straight out in front of your head and arch your back a little. Once you do this you should be sliding on your chest most of the time. You can paddle your arms and
legs a little to keep your body in that position and it will help you body surf the wave. When the wave begins to break then you want to turn away from the wave or dive under the water so the wave can pass. When you first start body surfing, you want to glide straight down the waves so that you get the hang of the feel of the experience. After you have gotten experience you can then proceed to change your formation and body surf the waves in other directions. It might take several days or weeks for you to successfully body surf the first time so be patient. The main thing to remember about body surfing is you want to keep your body in a position similar to a surfboard so you can ride the wave without causing yourself to go under the water.
When the Weather Warms, Keep Wines Cool By David White Most of the nation is still recovering from a brutal heat wave that shattered thousands of records and forced millions to stay indoors and crank up the air conditioning. The impact of such weather on wine was on full effect last weekend, when I attended an outdoor party on a 100-degree day. I arrived to the event a few hours early, as my friend had asked if I could bring a few cases of wine. When I pulled in, I was thrilled to spot the caterer, who was already filling large coolers with ice. She quickly took the white wines and threw them in the coolers. The reds, though, remained on a table, baking under the hot sun. So I asked how I could help, offering to put the reds in a refrigerator or toss them in a different cooler. She looked at me like I was insane. “I’ve been doing this for years, and I’ve never heard of chilling reds,” she declared, incredulously. I politely noted the sweltering heat, and suggested that guests would prefer cool wine -- which would quickly warm once poured -- to wine that had been sitting in the hot sun all day. “Well, you’re the expert,” she answered, proceeding to put the reds on ice. “But I’ve always been told that red wines are served at room temperature.”
And there it was, the world’s most pervasive wine myth. The notion that reds should be served at room temperature is why most people -- and even most bars, restaurants, and caterers -- serve red wines too warm. Before the advent of thermostats, homes were much cooler than they are today. So serving red wine at “room temperature” made sense -- it still made for a refreshing beverage. Today, most Americans keep their homes at about 72 degrees. At this temperature, alcohol is more obvious, which distorts the aromas and flavors of a wine. Warm wines generally seem rough, unstructured, and alcoholic. These traits only get worse as a wine heats up. Conversely, most white wines are consumed when they’re too cold. Most consumers serve whites straight from the refrigerator, and most restaurants serve them straight from an ice bucket. Serving any wine at such low temperatures will mask its flavors. Fortunately, you don’t need a fancy wine refrigerator to serve wine at its optimal temperature. If you’re drinking a red wine, pop it in the fridge for 20-30 minutes. If you’re drinking a white wine, pull it out of the fridge about 20-30 minutes before you’re going to drink it. As wine critic Bill Ward recently
explained, “Basically, all wine should be chilled, but not too much, and served between 43 degrees (sweet or crisp whites, bubbles) and 65 degrees (hearty reds). Richer whites (Chardonnay) and lighter reds (Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cabernet Franc) fall in between.” Temperature doesn’t just matter when serving wine, it also matters when storing it. If you’re looking to hold onto a special bottle for a long time, most experts agree that it should be stored somewhere cool and dark -- wine cellars are typically kept at about 55 degrees. This allows a wine to develop slowly and predictably, hopefully becoming more complex and interesting over time. Wines stored at higher temperatures will age more quickly and can develop off flavors and aromas. It’s also worth noting that wine is perishable and can spoil very quickly when exposed to extreme heat. This was another concern of mine last weekend. Like ice cream, wine can be de-
stroyed when left outside -- or even worse, in a car -- on a hot summer day. If a wine is just slightly “cooked,” the damage will be hard to perceive -- it will just seem a bit dull. When a wine is more noticeably heat-damaged, it’s marked by aromas of stewed fruit and burnt sugar. When heat damage is severe, the wine will expand inside the bottle -- pushing out the cork and breaking its seal, thus spoiling the wine by exposing it to too much oxygen. Already, it looks like this might be the hottest summer in history. So keep cool. And don’t forget to chill your wines. David White, a wine writer, is the founder and editor of Terroirist.com. July is Dedicated as National Grilling Safety Month… Dad, the Burgers are Burning, and So is the House! Not something one wants to hear… “While gas grills contribute to a higher number of home fires than their charcoal counterparts, all grills pose a risk for fires and burns says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.” Firefighters respond to multiple structure fires this time of year that involve barbeques in courtyards, terraces, patios and decks. Grills should be placed well away from the home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. If there is a fire involving grilling equipment, any fuel for the fire should not be near the home or any other structure. Some other grilling safety tips from the NFPA are: Propane and char grills should only be used outdoors. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before igniting it. Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. If you smell gas Page 24
while cooking, immediately get away from the grill and call the fire department. Do not move the grill. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it. Charcoal grills - There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney

starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel. If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire. Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources. There are also electric

Five Tips for Safe Summer Sun By Kevin Ronneberg, M.D. Summer has arrived. As the weather heats up, it’s critical for beachgoers and outdoor fun-seekers to be sun-safe. This begins with choosing the right sunscreen to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Equally important are these five simple tips from the Skin Cancer Foundation, which also will help you mitigate sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. First, seek the shade. Simply minimizing exposure to UVA and UVB rays can go a long way toward protecting your skin. Taking a break from direct sun is especially important between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when rays are strongest. And remember, clouds don’t block UV rays. Infants under 6 months should always be kept out of the sun -- protected with clothing, an umbrella or a stroller hood. Children and adults should wear protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and UV-blocking sunglasses. Second, use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Regardless of the season, this kind of sun protection should be used on a daily basis. Most people understand the importance of sun
safety during the summer months, but many underestimate the need for year-round protection. The temperature may drop, but UV rays remains strong. And the cooler temperatures may actually prevent people from realizing the extent of the damage the sun is doing to their skin. Next year, new regulations from the Food and Drug Administration will help consumers know they’re getting the right protection by prohibiting manufactures from labeling their sunscreens as “broad spectrum” or making claims about protecting against skin cancer and aging unless they’re SPF 15 or higher. And sunscreens with lower SPF values will have to sport a warning that the product may not offer protection against the harmful effects of exposure to the sun. Third, apply 1 ounce of sunscreen to the entire body 30 minutes before going outside. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, for full SPF protection, sunscreen must be applied half an hour before sun exposure. If you are average size, you’ll need a full ounce -- or about two tablespoons -- to adequately cover your skin. Studies show that most people apply less than half that amount, losing the full benefit of the SPF protection.
Reapplication is just as important as putting sunscreen on in the first place, as sunscreens tend to break down with exposure and can be rubbed off or washed off by sweat or water. So sunscreen should be applied every two hours, and immediately after swimming or a set of tennis. During a full day at the beach, one person should expect to use at least a quarter of an 8 oz. bottle of sunscreen. Fourth, do not let yourself burn. Sunburn is the most immediate and obvious sign of UV damage. When immune cells race to the injured skin site to start healing the damage, they produce the reddening and swelling. Tanning is the skin’s response to this damage and may permanently affect skin cells. While many believe a “base tan” will prevent damaging burns, that’s not the case. There is no such thing as a healthy or base tan. Finally, check your skin regularly and ask your doctor for a skin cancer exam annually. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer. Tans and burns can be the first step. Intermittent but intense UV exposure is more closely associated with melanoma, the most deadly variety of skin cancer,
than chronic sun exposure. One blistering sunburn in childhood or five in a lifetime doubles the risk of melanoma. To check yourself for signs of skin damage, inspect your skin from head to toe, looking for spots or sores that heal too slowly, new growths, and any moles or beauty marks that change in color, texture, or size. And once each year, be sure to ask your physician for a skin checkup. Sunscreens are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. They keep skin looking young and reduce the risk of many skin cancers. They must be used properly, however. These five suggestions will help keep you and your skin safe. Dr. Kevin Ronneberg is the associate medical director at Target.

If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder`s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call Priority Posting and Publishing at 714-573-1965 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address on the previous page for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA05000778-13-1. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER AND ALL OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-573-1965 or visit this Internet Web site: www.priorityposting.com using the file number assigned to this case H11-05003. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained herein, the sale shall be subject to the following as provided in California Civil Code Section 1367.4(c)4: “A non judicial foreclosure sale by an association to collect upon a debt for delinquent assessments shall be subject to a right of redemption. The redemption period within which the separate interest may be redeemed from a foreclosure sale under this paragraph ends 90 days after the sale.” Dated 7/2/2013 Witkin & Neal, Inc. as said Trustee 5805 SEPULVEDA BLVD., SUITE 670 SHERMAN OAKS, CA 91411 (818) 845-8808 By: Susan Paquette Trustee Sales Officer THIS NOTICE IS SENT FOR THE PURPOSE OF COLLECTING A DEBT.
