Uncover the latest trends in swimwear toppers By Sharon Mosley Associated Press Courtesy of creators.com Sheer tunic cover-ups are must-haves for a beach vacation. Vix cotton ruffle tunic (www.vixpaulahermanny.com). Swimwear cover-ups have swum a long way since the days of oversized T-shirts. Now you can wear your cover-up out to dinner and no one will ever guess you’ve been at the beach all day, thanks to the new “un-cover-ups.” Here are some ways to rethink your swimwear wardrobe this summer while spending more time enjoying the outdoors both in and out of the water. THE SWIM DRESS. One of the most versatile items you can wear over your swimsuit or by itself, the swim dress is the ultimate cover-up. In crinkle cotton or slinky jersey, in short or long hem-lengths, short sleeves or long sleeves, you can determine the coverage. Look for swim dresses in fabrics with sun protection for even more value. THE EMBELLISHED TUNIC. More of a long top than a dress, tunics have become one of the best go-to’s for any summer wardrobe, on and off the beach. Decorative embroidery, stones and beading add even more interest. In the season’s newest and brightest floral prints, tunics have bohemian flair. Sheer tunics are light and airy, a perfect choice for layering over swimsuits. THE BUTTON-FRONT SHIRT. Another versatile “un-cover-up” which can do double duty in your wardrobe year-round is a button-up shirt. From short, white classics to longer shirt dresses, these breezy shirts easily button up over swimwear and
are flattering to a wide variety of beach bodies. Try one in chambray to add a touch of Western spirit. THE ANORAK JACKET. When the sun is sizzling, a heavy jacket is not what you pack in your beach bag, but if it’s a cooler evening or cloudy day, then a lightweight anorak may be the perfect “un-cover-up.” Choose from their rainbow colors complete in all-weather waterproof nylon. You’ll be prepared for any kind of day at the beach, come rain or shine. THE CAFTAN. If you want long and loose, but lots of glamour, a caftan may be the ultimate “uncover-up” for you. Kaftans or caftans originated in the Middle East and are now common all over the world. The flowing garment is popular at pool parties and has an old Hollywood kind of je ne sais quoi. You can even custom design your own caftan featuring prints of your favorite pet. Meow! THE SWIM SEPARATES. With so many options available in swimwear collections, there are more ways than ever to cover up than ever before. Today’s options include long-sleeved tee rash guards and SPF-infused board shorts available in a variety of colors. Another choice given to swimmers are the high-waist miniskirts complete with tummy control. There’s something for everyone, not only to protect your skin from harmful sunburn, but to help disguise any uncomfortable parts you don’t want people to see. Don’t forget to accessorize. Oversized scarves make great cover-ups, along with other important summer must-haves: hats and sunglasses.

Be prepared: Red Cross urges blood and platelet donation Because emergency situations are unpredictable, the American Red Cross needs regular donations to help ensure that blood products are available for patients at a moment’s notice. You can help ensure a sufficient supply for accident victims and others with serious medical conditions. This May, the American Red Cross is calling for donors to give blood and platelets regularly to be prepared to meet the needs of patients in emergency situations. According to the National Trauma Institute, trauma accounts for approximately 41 million emergency department visits and 2 million hospital admissions each year. In March 2015, Kevin Frame suffered life-threatening injuries in a head-on collision during spring break. He received blood products to treat internal injuries immediately after the accident and during multiple surgeries while recovering. “Without the blood and plasma products made available from donations, I would not be alive today to continue my rehabilitation journey,” said Frame, who had to relearn to swallow, speak and walk after the accident. Regular blood, platelet and plasma donations help ensure that blood is available at a moment’s notice. In fact, it is the blood on the shelves that is used to help save lives at the time of an accident or sudden illness. In trauma situations, when there’s no time to check a patient’s blood type, emergency personnel reach for type O negative red blood cells and type AB plasma because they can be transfused to any patient, regardless of blood type. Less than 7 percent of
the population has type O negative blood, and only about 4 percent of the population has type AB blood. Platelets may also be needed to help with clotting in cases of massive bleeding. Because platelets must be transfused within five days of donation, there is a constant – often critical – need to keep up with hospital demand. Donors of all blood types are urged to roll up a sleeve this May to help meet the needs of trauma patients and others with serious medical conditions. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). How to donate blood Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their predonation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the
instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/ RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Volunteers needed Another way to support the lifesaving mission of the American Red Cross is to become a volunteer transportation specialist and deliver lifesaving blood products to local area hospitals. Volunteer transportation specialists play a very important role in ensuring an ample blood supply for patients in need by transporting blood and blood products. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, visit rdcrss.org/driver. About the American Red Cross The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit RedCross. org or CruzRojaAmericana.org, or visit us on Twitter at @RedCross.

2018 Hot Swimsuits Strutting the Best this season
With summer fresh upon us, selecting the perfect, form-fitting swimsuit requires the time and patience to try on and try out the latest and greatest. While my preference has always leaned toward Victoria Secret, look at these options and let us know what you think. Shaping Swimsuits: This is a perfect option for those who have a bit to hide in the tummy and hips as well as those who need a bit of help in the top. This swimsuit offers it all with flair of style as it highlights and adds the sexy curves that we all wish we had. One-Shoulder Swimsuits One-shoulder swimsuits are hardly new as a concept, though as with everything that cyclically emerges as a trend, the concept is infused with a fresh new take. With Luli Fama, the one-shoulder two piece that hit
Cute swimwear for the new season that was on par with several summer 2018 swimwear trends. Fun looks cover more than one trend is a crocheted tankini style top that laces up the V-neck. Sexy One pieces One pieces are not generally considered to be sexy, though options like T-Rivera and the Baywatch style swimsuits (which are revamped, of course) definitely break through. Most of the super sexy one pieces fall into at more than one of the above categories. The serious plunge of some of the necklines and cleverly placed cut outs on the one-piece swimsuit trends for summer 2018 are masterful. One-Shoulder Swimsuits One-shoulder swimsuits are hardly the runway was lightly pink, nearly nude, with a single shouldered top new as a concept, though as with that featured a short sleeve on one everything that cyclically emerges as side and a tie on the other, technically making it a string bikini. It was cute, fun and different. Full Coverage Swimsuit: This is a great choice for those who suffer with short torsos. This design of a flattering top takes full advantage of appearance. It allows the torso to be highlighted and draping into a longer torso. With basically full coverage front and bottom, the element of surprise is a fully open back. With the halter top and fully lined interior, the style and smooth lining add a dramatic beach effect. Front Tied Swimsuits Front tied bikinis are typically string bikinis, but can also be a part of tankinis and monokinis as well. Crocheted Swimwear
a trend, the concept is infused with a fresh new take. The one-shoulder two piece hit the runway with a single shouldered top that featured a short sleeve on one side and a tie on the other. Monokinis Monokinis are one pieces that look like a bikini that is attached by a piece of fabric or latticework. This can be done on the front, crossed over or just on one or both sides. Activewear Swimsuits Activewear swimsuits include a lot of options. Swimwear showe off sporty style bralettes and amazing surfer gear. Evena cold-shoulder top. The zip-up options seem to perfectly fit the requirements as well. Prints and Patterns Not your mothers typicall swim suit. Prints and funny saying abound.

The beloved singer Prince’s Island Mansion Going To Auction!
Similar to other celebrities Taylor Swift, Ellen DeGeneres, Meg Ryan and Diane Keaton, the late rocker Prince was a bit of a real estate collector buying and selling homes from California to Europe. But by the end of his second marriage in 2006, Prince centered his real estate purchases around his home state, Minnesota. Multiple tracts of acreage and homes were accumulated with the most well-known being his Paisley Park Studios complex in Chanhassen, which included space for recording, rehearsing, a party venue and was the headquarters of his record label. Also making his home there, it was where he was found dead from an overdose of fentanyl in 2016. Though deeply invested in Minnesota, Prince did have one unpublicized glamour property squirreled away, which might have been his best - a private fiveacre oceanfront estate on a secluded peninsula on Providenciales Island in
Page 10
Turks and Caicos. Two years after his death, Prince’s ocean house will be going to auction on July 12th. Designed for celebrity privacy, the 10,000-square-foot mansion is perched on a cliff 40 feet above the ocean with views of two private beaches, 200-foot private dock and panoramic ocean views. Built in island style, the massive sixbedroom, six-bath residence has dark, wood-beamed ceilings and walls of glass and doors that open wide to let in the sea breezes with access to the various terraces, pool and outdoor living spaces only a step away. The guard house is located at the entrance to the Prince signature purple driveway that passes the tennis court on the way to the mansion entrance. Located about 600 miles from Miami, the island is a popular vacation destination for Hollywood celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Christie Brinkley,

and Eva Longoria. Fashion designer Donna Karen, Keith Richards and Bruce Willis have owned homes on the island. Prince’s luxurious island estate, previously priced at $12 million, will be going up for auction with no starting
bid minimum. A refundable $100,000 bidder’s registration fee is required, and all bids must be delivered by July 12th. Premier Estates Auction Company is handling the sale. Source: premiereestates.com TopTenRealEstateDeals.com

Kure It’s Inaugural Rivals Cup Golf Tournament Nets over $100,000 Goal Photos by Jason Kurtz and Tony Lattimore Rivals United for a Kure, the major support group for nonprofit Kure It Cancer Research, which raises funds for underfunded cancers, held its inaugural golf tournament at Pelican Hill Golf Club in early June. A full contingent of golfers signed up for a beautiful, sunny day of golfing at the prestigious golf resort, later joining friends and family at the awards banquet and auction in a tent near the club house. The Rivals story is about the longstanding football rivalry between UCLA and USC, and the golfers came out to compete for the Rival’s Cup representing and routing for their respective team. It was close, but USC won the inaugural Rival’s Cup. The nice ending to the rivalry story is that raising funds for cancer research put aside any serious rivalry feelings and smiles abounded all-round. Among those leading the charge were Kure It board officer and Westport Properties Board Chair Drew Hoeven, whose late father Barry Hoeven founded Kure It 10 years ago, Briggs Electric CFO and Kure It board chair Todd Perry, Kure It board member and US Storage Centers and Westport Properties President/CEO Charles Byerly, and tournament co-chairs Linda and Burton Young (USC) and Dana and Tom Chou (UCLA). Television host and country singer Matt Rogers led the fast-paced live auction, which showcased trips to top golf retreats, including Pinehurst, Wailea, Cabo Del Sol, Bandon Dunes and the venerable Masters in Augusta, Georgia. Golfer Michael Wong won both Pinehurst and Bandon Dunes and the Masters sold for $16,000 twice to Karen Jordan and Taryn and Chris Mead. Drew Hoeven said of the effort, “Seeing the Rivals United for a Kure campaign extend into the inaugural Rivals Cup Tournament makes me extremely proud. My father, Barry Hoeven, would be so happy to see Kure It raise even more money for UCLA Jonsson and USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Centers. Our first tournament was a tremendous success, and we are happy to announce that we netted well over our $100,000 goal for cancer research.” Sponsors included Title Sponsor US Storage Centers, Sperry Commercial and Sperry Equities, Briggs Electric, Kiwi II Construction, NPV Advisors, The Muller Company, Walker & Dunlop, Rolex, Rolls Royce of Orange County, First Foundation Bank, Elite OC Productions, Coast to Coast Copy Empower Graphics, Main Graphics, among others. The fourth Rivals United for a Kure Gala is being planned for Sunday, November 11, at the City National Grove of Anaheim. It is always held the Sunday prior to the famous football match-up between UCLA and USC the following Saturday. Kure It, Inc. is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing funding for translational research projects focused on kidney cancer and other underfunded cancers. The funds raised through Kure It directly support groundbreaking research at leading cancer centers. Founded by Barry Hoeven in 2007 after his diagnosis with kidney cancer, Kure It expanded to support all underfunded cancers when the vast disconnect between the number of people afflicted with cancer and the amount of funding available for research became apparent. To date, Kure It has raised more than $6 million for cancer research and holds strong to the belief in Funding Research = Saving Lives! For more information visit www.KureIt.org.

LYON AIR MUSEUM HOSTS “ Vintage Motor Racing with a Special Tribute to Dan Gurney” Exhibit
Lyon Air Museum, a world class showcase of historic aircraft and vintage automobiles, to host exhibit, “Vintage Motor Racing – with a Special Tribute to Dan Gurney.” Nine breathtaking examples of race cars that made motor racing history will be presented alongside historic aircraft, July 1 – September 3, 2018 at the Museum, located on the west side of John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. Auto racing continues to be one of the world’s most popular spectator sports, with millions of enthusiastic fans attending racing events around the world every year. With humble beginnings dating back to the advent of the automobile itself, the sport has grown into an integral part of our global culture. Dan Gurney remains one of the
most significant drivers, constructors, and team owners in auto racing history. Getting his professional start in driving after returning home from the Korean War, he quickly racked up numerous victories, including four Formula 1 races and two 2nd place Indy 500 finishes, as well as overall wins at prestigious races such as Daytona, Sebring, and Le Mans. Dan’s win of the 1967 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa in the Gurney Eagle Weslake V12 racer, built by his own company, All American Racers, remains the only time an American-built car driven by its American designer occupied the winner’s circle of a Formula One World Championship event. A week later, after winning the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans, Gurney started the racing tradition of spraying champagne on the winner’s podium. Amongst the cars showcased during the special exhibit will be two Gurney Eagle Indy cars, representing All American Racer’s successful chassis campaigned at the 1968 and 1972 Indy 500. Also on display will be Dan Gurney’s personal 1963 Shelby Cobra, configured like that of the race car he drove at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1963.
In addition to the iconic Gurney race cars, among others, will be a 1927 Bugatti Type 35 Grand Prix racer, a rare 1965 Alfa Romeo TZ2, a 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster, 1961 Porsche Abarth driven by Gerhard Koch to the German GT Championship in 1962, and the 1973/74 Kremer Porsche Carrera RSR that achieved the 1973 GT class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with an incredible 8th place overall. These are truly rare and exceptional automobiles that are as timeless as they are beautiful, with many of them maintained in racing condition and still successfully competing on the historic motor racing circuit. Lyon Air Museum represents the realization of a dream of founder General William Lyon. As a former combat pilot, and ultimately Chief of the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1975 to 1979, his passion for aviation history and youth education is the driving force behind Lyon Air Museum. In establishing the Museum, General Lyon has created a world-class facility, offering educational tours and displays to inspire young people. The Museum has on exhibit some of the world’s rarest operational historic
aircraft and vehicles. Lyon Air Museum is located at 19300 Ike Jones Road, Santa Ana, CA 92707. 714/210-4585. info@lyonairmuseum.org. www. lyonairmuseum.org. Hours of operation are daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission rates: General admission--$12; Seniors and Veterans--$9; Ages 5-17--$6; Under age 5—Free. Groups of 10 or more-$1 off each visitor.
DAY TRIP TO VISIT ‘KING TUT’ AT THE CALIFORNIA MUSEUM OF SCIENCE By Lydia E. Ringwald Orange County friends and families looking for a fun and educational place to visit and take children this summer, may consider a visit to the California Museum of Science to experience amazing ‘King Tut’ art and artifacts from Egypt. The exhibit of extraordinary original works visits the museum in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park for the entire summer and fall of this year, then travels to Europe in a 10 cities worldwide tour over the next seven years. Plan a day trip from Orange County, but first order tickets in advance from the California Museum of Science website to reserve entry to this spectacular show. There are extended evening hours several days a week to accommodate the many visitors. Although the King Tut exhibit includes primarily the art and artifacts from King Tut’s tomb discovered in the Valley of the Kings, additions displays in the California Science Museum with recent scientific developments in CT scan technology reveal more Page 16
information about the life of the Ancient Egyptian King and Pharaoh. While at the museum, visitors can also view the many other science exhibits and also see the spectacular 3-D IMAX films in the 7 story IMAX screen in the theater adjacent the California Museum of Science. Featured is ‘Mysteries of Egypt’ where audiences accompany a National Geographic team as they uncover the secrets of the pharaohs’ tombs and pyramids. Check showtimes for spectacular IMAX films ‘Hubble 3D’, ‘Journey to Space 3D’ expand the scope from ancient times into the future. Visitors may also plunge into the depths of the Amazon with ‘Amazon Adventure 3D’ or experience Panda bears in ‘Pandas 3D.’ Enjoy delightful dining at the nearby Museum of Natural History cafeteria or other local eateries in the Exposition Park area. Carly Anthony and Clochard celebrate the win in the $25,000 Markel Insurance 1.45m Jumper Classic
Carly Anthony and Clochard Stake Their Claim in the $25,000 Markel Insurance Jumper Classic Shawn Casady & Durango VDL Top the Field in the U25 Jumper Classic Photos by McCool my plan is always just to keep up Casady is handling the job well. produces events in three locations:
Carly Anthony and Clochard, owned by Neil Jones Equestrian, Inc., topped the field of 21 competitors in today’s $25,000 Markel Insurance 1.45m Jumper Classic. Shawn Casady rounded out the podium with second aboard Durango VDL and third on Campitello 5, both owned by Highpoint Farm, LLC. First to go in the jump-off, Anthony’s inside turns and Clochard’s big stride led to a double clear performance in an impressive time of 37.55 seconds. Although Casady was also double clear on both his mounts, he could not catch Anthony and Clochard. International course designer Michel Vaillancourt built a challenging 1.45m track on The Oaks International Grand Prix Field that included many related direct and bending lines, leading to just three fault-free rounds, one round with two time faults, and four riders with scores of four faults. “I liked the course out there today. When I’m in a jump-off with Clochard
with him and let him do his thing,” the winner explained. “Looking to the rest of the season with him, I’d like to keep having consistent rounds in these 1.45 classics and in the Saturday Grand Prix classes.” Shawn Casady and Durango VDL Top the Field in the $2,500 Blenheim U25 Jumper Classic Running concurrently with the Markel Insurance 1.45m Jumper Classic, Shawn Casady rode the gray stallion, Durango VDL, to the win in the $2,500 Blenheim U25 Jumper Classic. “Durango is a very big horse with a very big stride. He jumped great in both rounds today,” Casady noted. “I look forward to competing with him and the rest of the horses throughout the season.” Casady has taken over the reins for Tina Yates of Highpoint Farm, LLC, as she and her husband Craig are expecting their first baby in July. Known for his catch riding skills,
Blenheim June Classic 1 will continue into the weekend with the $30,000 1.50m Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon and the USHJA WCHR West Coast Hunter Spectacular on Sunday morning. Blenheim EquiSports, an equestrian event management company based in San Juan Capistrano, CA,

Rethink Your Drink This Summer
From barbecues and birthdays to concerts and cookouts, summertime is the perfect time of year to bring everyone together. However, nice weather and outdoor events are also coupled with summer heat waves and high temperatures. Water – whether plain or sparkling – is a great way to help you stay hydrated all summer long without the calories and added sugar of other summer favorites like lemonade or punch. Healthy hydration in the summertime starts when you rethink your drink so you can beat the heat. To get started, these tips from Sarah Ladden, M.S., R.D., nutrition, health and wellness director at Nestlé Waters North America, can help keep you hydrated all summer long. Pack for the heat. The summer heat can mean an increase in water loss, which can put you at a higher risk for dehydration especially if you’re outside for long periods of time. Make sure to pack water for all your summer outings and hydrate before, during and after all outdoor activities. Add your own flavor. While bottled, filtered or tap water are all good choices for healthy hydration, some people simply prefer flavored beverages. The good news: it’s easy to customize water just the way you like it. This summer, wow your friends with a DIY sparkling water bar. Set out your favorite sparkling waters – include flavored waters for added fun –
alongside an assortment of seasonal berries, sliced fruit and fresh herbs, and let guests create their personalized refreshments. Make water fun. Jazz up a glass of your favorite water with a simple addition – decorative ice. Before filling your ice tray, add a few berries or cubed melon, fresh herbs like mint or rosemary then top with water and
freeze. Add a few cubes to a refreshing glass of water and enjoy just a hint of subtle flavor. Keep water close. It’s important to keep your body well-hydrated throughout the day, but it is easy to get busy and simply forget to drink. Keep water in convenient locations throughout your home, office or even in the car for a visual reminder to keep
sipping. Stocking water at the front of your fridge is another good habit so it’s the first choice kids or other family members see. This summer, rethink your drink with these tips to help make smart beverage choices. To learn more about healthy hydration, visit nestlewatersna.com. Photo courtesy of Getty Images
Tips to Get Your Yard Summer-Ready
Although you may be itching to get back outside, before you can relax there’s work to do. After enduring the wear and tear of fall and winter, most yards need attention to get back into summer shape. These tips from the experts at Sun Joe will help you clean up your entire yard in time for summer so there’s more time to enjoy the great outdoors: Garden – Prepare your planting bed by using a tiller before seeding. Loosening up existing soil helps water and nutrients reach your new plants’ roots. Better yet, add some manure before tilling to create a healthy growing environment. Trees – Spring and summer are all about new life and dead tree limbs hanging around your home can kill the mood. Instead of climbing up a rickety latter with clippers, keep your feet planted and use Sun Joe’s cordless Pole Chain Saw. This lightweight chainsaw allows you to saw off dead limbs and let gravity do the rest… just make sure to stand back using the 15-foot extension. Mulch – Use the mild weather of spring before it gets too hot to lay down or freshen up the mulch around your plants. A thin (2-3 inches deep) layer of mulch around your landscape will help keep roots cool in the upcoming summer months and warm when cooler weather inevitably Page 24
returns again. Grass – When your grass is recovering from the long winter, you should wait until your soil dries out before starting work on your lawn because being too eager and working on soggy soil can harm already tender new grass roots. Once your grass is alive and growing, mow only once you
The Coto de Caza News
need to – grass is at its healthiest if you cut no more than a third of the blade. Get your timing right and your neighbors will notice that the grass is always greener on your side. Driveway/Patio – Over the winter months, mildew, grime, dirt and stains have grown in your outdoor spaces, reduced curb appeal and destroyed
your yard. Sun Joe’s line of easy-touse electric pressure washers can make your spaces look brand new, delivering thousands of pounds of water pressure to demolish every square inch of dirt from your driveway, your patio, your sidewalk and even your home’s siding.

School of Rock – The Musical also won the 2017 Oliver award for Outstanding Achievement in Music. Based on the hit film, School of Rock – The Musical is a hilarious show that follows Dewey Finn, a
failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitarshredding, bass-slapping, mindblowing rock band. While teaching these pint-size prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful, but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within. School of Rock – The Musical features scenic and costume design by Anna Louizos, lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Mick Potter and music supervision by John Rigby. School of Rock — The Musical is produced on Broadway by Andrew Lloyd Webber for The Really Useful Group, Warner Music Group & Access Industries, The Shubert Organization and The Nederlander Organization. Nina Lannan and Madeleine Lloyd Webber serve as Executive Producers. Segerstrom Center for the Arts applauds Charles Schwab for its sponsorship of School of Rock – The Musical. Kia Motors America is the Official Automotive Partner, United Airlines is the Official Airline, and Omaha Steaks International is the Official Fine Food Retailer. Spectrum Reach is the Media Partner of the Broadway and Curtain Call Series. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. T
FAMILY FEATURES
he start of spring is the perfect time for new beginnings, including a fresh start on eating healthy. The trick is introducing smart eating habits so tasty and easy that your eating plan becomes more a way of life than a short-lived commitment. One easy way to achieve that habit is by adding watermelon to your daily diet, giving your body a low-calorie option to curb an appetite for unhealthy snacks. Set reasonable goals. A deprivation diet is destined to fail because eventually your body will rebel. Instead, aim for well-rounded meals with moderate portions. If weight loss is your ultimate goal, know that losing two pounds a week is generally considered the maximum, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Satisfy your sweet tooth. Everyone, even the most dedicated health food fans, experience cravings from time to time. Most experts agree that it’s OK to answer your sweet tooth – in moderation of course. Before you take the plunge, think about whether there are other options that could be a good substitute. For example, instead of a sugary candy bar, consider a naturally sweet slice of watermelon for a cholesterol-free, fat-free way to satisfy cravings at only 80 calories per 2-cup serving. Watermelon contains fiber and water, and packs a wealth of health benefits, including strong levels of vitamins A, C and B6. Stay well hydrated. During the warmer spring and summer months, it’s easy to let water consumption slide because you’re focused on entertaining and outdoor activities. However, the warm air can be hard on your body, so it’s important to keep that water flowing year-around. Most adults should aim for eight glasses of water each day, but you can also boost your water intake with foods that have a high water content, such as watermelon, which is 92 percent water and contains protein and fiber so you are satisfied on fewer calories while boosting your overall hydration. Find more inspiration for health-conscious habits at watermelon.org.

Make Water Mouthwatering
A simple infusion of flavor gives water an instant upgrade, whether you’re looking to add some variety to your daily water consumption or you’re hosting an event and want to offer guests a unique and nutritious beverage. Use your favorite herbs and fruits to create one-of-a-kind combinations that provide refreshing rehydration. Try these pairings: n Watermelon with basil, mint or lime n Strawberry with lime and basil n Cucumber and rosemary n Mixed berries and mint n Pineapple with coconut

5 easy ways to reduce digital eyestrain
Technology can be beautiful thing. It has expanded our worlds and our minds, connecting people in a way they’ve never been before. But if you’re regularly using mobile devices, it’s possible you’re one of 70 percent of U.S. adults who suffer from digital eyestrain. And if you’re using technology before bed, you’re probably suffering from the sleep- and heath-altering effects of blue light. Blue light, which helps us see digital screens clearly in the daytime, is emitted from things you use every day: cell phones, tablets, laptop and desktop computers, and even TVs and digital billboards. And consistent exposure can cause disruptions in your circadian rhythm and sleep patterns, especially if you’re exposed to blue light before bedtime. The poor sleep quality caused by these disruptions has been associated with a myriad of health issues, from diabetes to heart disease. Our technology consumption isn’t expected to decline anytime soon, but we still need our eyes to function properly to experience and interact with the world. Below are some tips that can help you maintain your health while using modern technology: Make sure you have the right tools. For those who wear glasses or any kind of vision correction solution, Carl Zeiss Vision created an entire portfolio of products to help users
maintain optimal eye health while interacting with our digital world. From Digital Lens, which helps to combat digital eyestrain and support screen viewing, to Duravision BlueProtect which is specifically designed to protect against blue and violet light waves, these solutions help users better and more comfortably view the world. Put your phone down before bed. Avoid looking at bright screens two to three hours before bed so your body and eyes can “power down,” and help you start the essential nightly restoration process that is sleep. Hack your sleep. When sleeping, try to make sure all digital devices are completely off. Sleeping in a completely dark room has been shown to improve recovery and restoration from the day’s activities, allowing you to feel more rested in the morning. Get out in the sun. Exposing yourself to lots of bright light during the day will acclimate your body to the cycle of being alert and present throughout the day, and improve your body’s ability to sleep at night. Go for the 20-20-20 solution. Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds and focus on something that’s 20 feet away. This gives your eyes time to adjust and refocus, reducing fatigue. - (BPT)
