Dressing for success on campus: a guide to college fashion College students are cash strapped and time crunched. So how can they look fashionable while juggling their studies, campus activities and a part-time job? Integrating basic items into their wardrobes is a start and adding pops of color with accessories can transform a standard outfit into a standout style. Building off fashion staples “For both guys and girls, jeans, jackets and T-shirts are, of course, all staples for a college student’s wardrobe,” says Peggy Blum, fashion program coordinator at The Art Institute of Austin. This fall, “blue is heralded as the new black.” Warm reds and oranges, pastels, taxi cab yellow and loden green are also trendy hues. And while skinny jeans still rule the denim world, expect to see them in neon colors, or with printed or bleached treatments. Blum recommends that students seeking a more comfortable fit choose a “boyfriend” jean, which features more relaxed styling. Blum suggests that college students invest in bold-striped T-shirts, with stripes that vary in width. She adds that prepster-style shirts are a fresh look for both men and women this fall. Also in style - wide leg jeans and an overall masculine look, says Emilia Valle, program coordinator for fashion at The Art Institute of Houston-North. “The look for the returning college student is definitely a coat or jacket with a strong masculine look. From pastels - yes pastels even in fall - to traditional men’s fabrics and some punk flair, this upcoming season is full of overcoats to complete a strong polished style,” Valle says.

Accessorizing: from shoulder bags to footwear Army style, denim and long shirtstyle jackets are an easy way to accessorize an outfit, according to Blum. “For girls, pink coats are predicted to be a hit this fall straight from the runways.” Other must have accessories include printed smartphone cases, sporty sneakers or cutout oxfords and strong gold-tone neckpieces to complete the look while complementing a summer tan. College students are trending away from backpacks and moving toward all day bags. “A streamlined multipurpose tote will fit any student’s daily must haves and is appropriate for campus to work or travel.” Valle mentions that choosing a large leather tote will add a touch of class to a student’s overall look. “A large leather tote will work fab and still keep you in style.” Thrifty looks: fashion on a budget Students on a tight budget might wonder how they can incorporate fashionable pieces into their

wardrobe. Valle suggests mixing old and new to create a fresh, budgetfriendly look. “Remember, consignment and thrift stores can make a fashion budget stretch longer, and of course you can help out the planet in the process by recycling someone else’s retro fashion pieces,” she adds. And the runway trend toward disheveled grunge styles should be helpful to those seeking recycled pieces. A nod to grunge every now and then works this season. The do-it-yourself trend is also extremely popular with fashionable, budget-conscious college students. Thrifting at second hand shops, yard sales, or swapping clothing is a costeffective way to remain fashionable on a budget. Looking fashionable while attending college doesn’t have to be time-consuming or budget-breaking. By choosing a few staple items and adding colorful accessories, students can make it to class on time and on-trend.

Price is no object when the object is to provide pampered residents with paved roads that drive like a dream and look like liquid licorice in Coto de Caza’s fashionable Ranchos Colinas neighborhood. Only little more than a year had passed since the Coto de Caza Homeowners Association treated the residents to a silky-smooth black slurry to the elegant mansion-lined thoroughfares that traverse the community. While winter rains and the regular rumble of service trucks may have rumpled the roadways in a few places, no major complaints were heard. However, as Coto de Caza’s Ranchos Colinas residents pay not one but two sets of Homeowner Association dues each month, it was not altogether unexpected that the Ranchos Colinas Homeowners Association this month announced that these ritzy residential roads would not just be treated to their customary coat of slurry, but indeed would be ripped asunder. Nothing less than a major makeover to rip out, remove and repair every conceivable crevice, crack and pavement irregularity is currently underway and a complete asphalt facelift is fast forthcoming. Although the asphalt assault was slated to take three days in which residents would not be able to park on their streets, with few objections these opulent occupants took it in stride. All manner of elegant automobiles soon began filling up all available parking along Coto de Caza Drive and in the adjacent Tiara neighborhood. By the time this newspaper is delivered to your mailbox the streets will once again be the seamless stretches of driving perfection as Coto de Caza’s Ranchos Colinas residents have come to expect. Coincidentally, all completed just in time for the September Block Party.

A Tradition of Service

Home Sales Top $11 Billion This Year So Far Article by Jeff Collins, OC Register

Orange County home sales topped $11 billion in the first half of 2015, the most since 2005, data from the California Regional Multiple Listing Service show. Sales hit $2.37 billion in June alone, likewise a high not seen since the peak of the housing boom. The latest CR-MLS report, based on home sales through the broker-run network, shows rising sales combined with rising home prices are fueling the strongest recovery since the housing bubble burst. Highlights of the MLS’s June report for Orange County include: • The combined value of all homes sold by brokers and agents totaled $11.03 billion in the six months ending in June. • That was 14.9 percent, or $1.4 billion, more than the amount generated by home sales in the first six months of 2014. • Sales in the first half of the year were the highest since local brokers closed $13.01 billion worth of home sales in 2005. • The dollar volume of home sales are up 85 percent, or $5.1 billion, from the market bottom in 2009. • A total of 15,087 homes were sold from January through June, a 10.4 percent jump. Of those, 3,128 homes were sold in the month of June, up 14.7 percent from June 2014. • The avg. sale price was $731,181, up 4.1 percent over the first half 2014. June’s avg. of $756,972 was up 5.5 percent year over year. • June’s sales volume of $2.37 billion was up nearly $412 million, or 21.1 percent, from the total revenue generated a year earlier. • Last month’s total equates to approximately $142 million in real estate agent commissions (assuming the typical commission is plus or minus 6 percent). That’s roughly $25 million more than was generated in June of last year. Call me to find out more about this report or if you have any real estate questions. I’m here to help.

Tickets for Ina Garten: Barefoot Contessa start at $49. Single tickets will be available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. The TTY number is (714) 556-2746. Williams-Sonoma is the exclusive seller of autographed copies of Ina’s latest book, MAKE IT AHEAD: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, for this tour with Mills Entertainment. Autographed copies can be preordered now at www.williamssonoma.com/inagartentour for pickup at the event. Pre-ordering is strongly

recommended as there will be a limited supply available for purchase on the night of the show. MAKE IT AHEAD: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook delivers Ina’s top makeahead recipes and invaluable tips, making meal-planning easier than ever — whether for the week ahead or for a special meal. Eight million copies of Garten’s books have been in print, including her last seven titles that have been The New York Times bestsellers. Segerstrom Center for the Arts applauds Kia, Official Automotive Partner of the Center and United Airlines, Official Airline of the Center. Garten opened a modest store in the Hamptons called Barefoot Contessa, in 1978. Eighteen years later, the store had grown to 3,000 sq. ft., which she sold to start working on her cookbooks. In 2002, Food Network approached Garten to do a cooking show based on her cookbooks and love of entertaining. Garten’s new line of prepared frozen meals, Sauté Dinners for Two, launched in spring of 2013 and is available in 40 national supermarket chains. In addition, Garten has contributed to House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living and O, Oprah’s magazine.

When It Comes to Beauty and Fashion, Make an Eye-Catching Statement Change is the only constant for Millennials in the beauty and fashion world, suggests a recent survey. Millennial women, ages 18 to 29, feel empowered to embrace change and showcase a variety of colors when it comes to their appearance. The survey, found that Millennial women are more inclined to pull fresh trends and colors into their beauty and fashion selections a departure from the more simple styles embraced by Generation X. With over half of Millennials describing their style as always changing, this bold new take allows for a great deal of freedom and flexibility in personal expression. Color is one of the major factors that allows these Millennials to stand out and express themselves. In the survey, 71 percent of women stated that adding color to their look is one of the most effective ways to showcase their personality. Additionally, more than 60 percent of Millennials believe that using different colors can enhance their natural look and boost their confidence. And empowerment is a major factor in all this change, according to the survey, which revealed young women view enhancements to their appearance as both an empowering and fundamental part of their style. You can follow the lead of these fearless fashionistas with some simple tips for adding color to your own style.

• A fresh approach to your makeup instantly transforms your look. Try changing up the color of your lipstick, eye shadow, nail polish and eye liner for an instant enhancement. • Express yourself in unexpected ways, such as with your eye color. AIR OPTIX® COLORS contact lenses were designed for the fashionsavvy consumer to enhance their look and complement their make-up choices. Call for Candidates It’s that time of year again for our call for candidates for the 2015-2016 Village HOA Board of Directors. If you have an interest to volunteer your time and serve your community, please fill out the attached Candidate’s Statement and return to Management no later than August 31, 2015. All valid candidates will be invited to speak at the Candidates’ Night on September 9, 2015, with the election taking place at the October 14, 2015 meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Management for assistance. South Orange County Fire Watch Volunteers The South County Fire Watch together with the Orange County Fire Authority invite you to participate in their fire watch, a partnership to deter and report behaviors that could lead to fires and to detect fires quickly if they start. Protect Your Community • Nearly all wildfires in Orange County in the last 100 years have been caused by humans; Fire Watch Training • O C FA t r a i n i n g p r e p a r e s volunteers for deployment under conditions of severe fire hazard. On “Red Flag” days, South County Fire Watch will assign rotating shifts of volunteers to wildland vantage points to serve as deterrents and lookouts for fire professionals. We seek to place participants in locations easily accessible from where they live or work. Page 22

How Can You Help? Become a Fire Watch Volunteer! Contact Sandy DeSimone (949) 858-0309, sdesimoH.Aubon.org or Laura Coley Eisenberg (949) 240-3363 Ext 297, Icoleyeis-raTanchomv.com. These letters may be a request for home maintenance including but not limited to painting, cleaning, and landscaping. Please do not be alarmed if you receive a courtesy letter from Management and rest assured that both the Board and Management are happy to work with all homeowners on a reasonable deadline to address any concerns. Any application received after the 15th will not be reviewed until the following month’s Architectural Meeting. Water Conservation Ideas Do you love turf but not the high cost of water? Here’s an alternative to converting your current irrigation to a drip line. Please visit the Santa Margarita Water District website at .smwd.com for possible rebates up to $175 for every 250 sq. ft. of grass. Please remember that any landscape changes require ARC Committee approval prior to work beginning. Coto General Store The new owners of the Coto General Store, Larry and Carol Guesno, have launched a website at www.cotogeneralstore.com with details of their vision for the property and site renderings. They are also interested in hearing from the community on what residents want to see at the location and have a survey section on their website. Encroachment Policy Before homeowner’s can plant vegetation into HOA property they must first obtain approval through the Architechtural Committee. Homeowners are required to submit their plans along with a signed and notarized Encroachment Agreement to the Management for Committee review. Once Approved the homeowner must file this

documentation with the County before work can begin. Drought conditions Please remember to avoid watering your lawn between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Water evaporates more quickly when the sun is out. Instead, please water your lawn in the early morning, evening or at night. Do your part to conserve water during this serious drought. Easing stress during the busy back-to-school season The easy breezy days of summer are coming to a close, and families everywhere are preparing to go back to school. For parents, this is a particularly challenging time of year. To help simplify and make this time more enjoyable, “The Lifestyle Mom” Dana Hilmer has a few tips for busy parents: 1. The temptation to sign your kids up for any and every extra-curricular activity is intense. Before you turn in registration forms, think through how each activity will impact both your children and your family’s priorities. Perhaps you want one day of the weekend free or you want to have dinner together four times a week. Once you have assessed your needs, ask yourself if each activity aligns with them. 2. You have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and while it may be easy to provide a good breakfast for your kids, parents often forget about fueling up with the right breakfast for themselves. Perfect for eating on the go, belVita Soft Baked Breakfast Biscuits come in two varieties, Mixed Berry and Oats-& Chocolate. They provide 11 grams of whole grains and contain no high fructose corn syrup or artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners. Grab a banana and a latte, and you have nutritious morning energy to help tackle whatever comes your way. 3. It may be easier said than

done, but learn how to say “no.” Saying “no” gives you permission to say “yes” to things that are truly important to you. Next time you are asked to do something, let that person know that you need to check your calendar. That will give you time to decide if this new activity is truly worthy of your time, and to craft a polite explanation, if not. 4. Finally, create a to-do list that

is realistic and achievable. Many people are guilty of having a huge to-do list and then feeling defeated at the end of the day when all of the boxes aren’t checked off. Often, a good chunk of things on that list probably have more to do with your own expectations than with what anyone else is expecting of you. Start a to-do list with three sections: the priority of the day for yourself, the

priority of the day for your family and the priority of the day for your work. Start with these items and only move on to the others once they’re done. Chances are the laundry can wait until another day. Your children going back to school doesn’t have to be stressful. With these tips you can enjoy this exciting, coming of age time with your family.

The man cave: Give Dad a space all his own

Man cave, manspace, manctuary ... whatever he calls it, it’s Dad’s special place away from the rest of the house. This Father’s Day, give Dad the ultimate gift and make him his own man cave. It’s easier than you think, and a thoughtful gift that says to Dad, “I love you, and you can run away from us now.” Step 1: Identify the space The optimal man cave is secluded, has a lockable door and is 100 percent Dad’s to own and decorate. Examples include garages, basements, dens, attics or for the bookish types, studies. When locating Dad’s man cave, consider this it’s his to own, decorate, use and entertain in however he chooses. He will clean it (or not) how he sees fit ... although you can encourage him with a heavy-duty vacuum, like a Wet/Dry Vac. Step 2: Clear it out and outfit it Dad needs a blank canvas to create his masterpiece. Clear out all the boxes, industrial-size cleaning and paper products and any other knickknacks you’ve stored there. Locate the focal point of the room and think about what he’ll put there. For sports-loving dads and his friends, this will probably be a big screen TV. For the DIYer and builder, it’s where his workbench goes. * Paint it. A fresh coat of paint does wonders. In one glance, it can tell you that you’ve entered the “man room.” Paint experts recommend dark blues, greens or reds for a man cave, with accents of charcoal blacks or chocolate brown. * No matter the dad, you’ll want to set him up with durable storage options that can handle anything from power tools to whiskey stones, like a 9-drawer

Mobile Work Center, or 48 inch Floor Cabinet. It’ll also withstand every day wear and tear and look great years from now. * Does Dad like giant TVs? Don’t run the risk of having it crash to the ground. Get a mounting kit, like the Level Mount Adjustable Fixed Mount. If you’ve got questions on how to install, ask an associate when you’re picking it up. Step 3: Stock it Next, fill ‘er up with goodies to keep him busy for days. Whether these gifts are for his projects or just for relaxing, Dad deserves ultimate setup. * If Dad likes to entertain or just stay refreshed while working, an ice maker and mini fridge will keep him from having to leave his new favorite place. * Dad like toys? Hook him up with the latest innovation in power tools lithium ion batteries. They hold their charge four times longer than traditional ni-cad batteries. For newbies, the Ryobi ONE+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Drill and Impact Driver Combo kit or the Ryobi ONE + Ultimate Combo Kits are both great choices to get Dad drilling. For the fully-stocked DIYer, try the Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ 18-Gauge Cordless 2 inch Brad Nailer. If it’s hand tools he’s after, you can get lifetime-guaranteed Husky 7-Piece Ratcheting Mobile Wrench Set. * Give him something cool to show off with his friends. Check out ta 3D Tactical Flashlight, which can shine the length of three football fields and work even while submerged in 30 feet of water; a Beer Keg Fridge, or an LED headlamp (you’ll be shocked at the uses he’ll find for this). * Let him choose his own adventure with new

Project Cards from The Home Depot - load it up with the amount needed for Dad’s next project and he can track the balance with no fees. If you’re helping Dad, you can also be added to the account to use the card when you run out for supplies. Step 4: Break it in Every new space needs a housewarming party, including caves. Invite the guys over and encourage Dad to show off his man cave’s sweet style.- Put together tubs of soda, beer and water, order the wings, arrange easy table snacks like chips and salsa, and let them have at it. Cheers to this mancutary.

PACIFIC SYMPHONY NAMES ACCOMPLISHED YOUNG MAESTRO, ROGER KALIA, AS NEW ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR Pacific Symphony announces Roger Kalia as its next assistant conductor, beginning in September. Kalia replaces Assistant Conductor Alejandro Gutiérrez, who after three years with the Symphony returns home to Costa Rica to take on the roles of professor at the University of Costa Rica and guest conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra. Gutiérrez’ final concert takes place at the Symphony’s Summer Festival on Saturday, July 25, when he leads “Beethoven’s ‘Emperor’ and Scheherazade.” With a great deal of experience as a conductor and educator, Kalia, age 30, comes to Orange County from the Charlotte Symphony, where he has served as assistant conductor since September 2013. In his new role, Kalia will serve as conductor of the Symphony’s Family Musical Mornings concerts and music director of Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra. Among his duties, the new assistant conductor will lead the youth orchestra on its tour to China next fall. “I am thrilled and honored to be the next assistant conductor of Pacific Symphony,” says Kalia. “I am very much looking forward to making music with the fantastic musicians of Pacific Symphony and working closely with Music Director Carl St.Clair. I am also excited to connect with our audience and to play a vital role in Orange County’s cultural scene.” Maestro Kalia led a variety of performances for the Charlotte Symphony including the family, education, outreach and parks concerts, and he also collaborated frequently with the Charlotte Ballet. He’s been praised for conducting with “vigor” and “commitment” (Charlotte Observer) and for bringing a “fresh view to classical music” (The Republic). Kalia also finishes up three years as music director of the Young Musicians Foundation (YMF) Debut Orchestra in Los Angeles. Winner of YMF’s 2012 National Conductor Search, he follows in the footsteps of such illustrious conductors as Michael Tilson Thomas, André Previn and Myung-Whun Chung. “We are all very excited that Roger will be joining our Pacific Symphony Page 24

family as assistant conductor,” says Maestro St.Clair. “He is a conductor with immense talent and great passion. Though relatively young, he has amassed a great deal of experience as a conductor. His conducting successes have garnered him national attention. I welcome him and look forward to having him as an assistant.” In addition to assisting Maestro St.Clair with conducting duties, Kalia will play a vital role in the Symphony’s education initiatives. These include programming and conducting the Family Musical Mornings series, which introduces children ages 5-11 to the exciting world of orchestral music through engaging and educational concerts. He will also welcome more than 12,000 elementary schoolchildren to the concert hall at the end of each school year for the Class Act Youth Concerts, which conclude a year of music lessons and performances in Orange County schools given by Symphony musicians. His introduction to the Symphony audience takes place at the first family concert of the year, “Phantoms of the Orchestra,” on Saturday, Oct. 24. “With Roger, the Symphony will have an excellent musician and conductor, but most importantly a great person with wonderful energy and experience working with young artists and young audiences,” says departing Assistant Conductor Gutiérrez. Another primary role for Kalia will be serving as music director of Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra (PSYO), a premier training orchestra for instrumentalists in grades 9-12. In addition to preparing them for a threeconcert series each season, Kalia will also be guiding the orchestra on a 10-day international tour to China in the summer of 2016. “One of the greatest joys of working with young musicians is their curiosity and excitement about music,” says Kalia. “Many of them are encountering these masterpieces for the very first time, and their energy is simply contagious. “I am eager and excited to be going to China with Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra next year,” he continues. “Having the opportunity

Roger Kalia to see and experience another culture is something that these young musicians will never forget. I, too, had the experience of visiting China as part of a youth orchestra when I was a junior in high school, and the trip made a huge lasting impression on me. Performing in different concert halls and seeing the sights and sounds of different cities in China inspired me to become a professional musician. This will be an elevating and transformative experience for these young musicians, and I can’t wait for this trip.” Kalia has proven to be a prolific leader in the music world through his appearances with orchestras across North America and Europe, as well as his innovative programming choices. Highlights from his time with YMF Debut Orchestra include a production of Stravinsky’s “The Soldier’s Tale” with actors Jack Black and Michael Lerner at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a unique concert titled “Gamer Jams: Music Behind the Screen” featuring

music by leading video game composers at the Ford Theater, and the orchestra’s debut performance at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels “Virgin of Guadalupe” Celebration, which was televised and streamed worldwide. Kalia has worked with many famous composers, commissioning and programming more than 100 works as an advocate for contemporary classical music. This fascination for the advancement of music in today’s world along with the reverence for the old masterpieces is expressed in Kalia’s co-founding and music directorship of the Lake George Music Festival in New York, which serves as a meeting point for composers and musicians from across the nation. Kalia’s many praiseworthy experiences are further bolstered by his acceptance of the BMI/Lionel Newman Conducting Scholarship and YMF Conducting Grant. He completed his work as a doctoral conducting fellow at Indiana University.

This Summer, Make Room for Chillable, Gulpable Reds HAPPY GRAPES

By David White Greetings from Ocean City, New Jersey. This past Saturday, I checked into a rental house for the week with some friends. Since Ocean City is a dry town, we came with plenty of beer and wine, along with ingredients for a few basic cocktails. While prepping dinner on the first night, we opened our first wine a rosé of Pinot Noir from Pascal and Nicolas Reverdy, two brothers who produce some of the best wine in Sancerre. After sitting down to eat, we decided to open a red. So we pulled the cork on a bottle of Refosco from Matthiasson Wines, a small, family operation in Napa Valley. It had been in the refrigerator for about two hours and

so was quite cold. But nothing about the serving temperature struck any of us as wrong; it was lip-smackingly delicious. This time of year, light reds deserve a spot in the fridge and on the table. Such a concept might seem foreign. After all, when consumers think of chilled wines, they tend to think of whites and rosés. And for most Americans, a light, brisk red is an oxymoron. Reds are supposed to be dark, powerful, and served alongside steak. But plenty of reds shine when chilled. Take Gamay, the red variety from Beaujolais. Famed wine importer Kermit Lynch once described the wines of Domaine Diochon, a producer there, as “juicily delicious,” praising them for having “a lush, supple, swallowable texture.” This description can be used for virtually every top Beaujolais. The best examples effortlessly combine vibrant acidity with depth and complexity. And they sing when served slightly cold. (If you’re scratching your head, then you’re probably thinking of Beaujolais Nouveau, the easy

drinking, fruity wine that floods ashore every November and is almost always insipid.) Elsewhere in France, the Jura’s reds which consist mainly of Poulsard, Pinot Noir, and Trousseau demand to be chilled. This region is becoming quite popular with wine enthusiasts. Beaujolais and the Jura are both quite cool. On the viticultural edge, grapes struggle to ripen, so it’s nearly impossible to produce big reds. Consequently, the indigenous grapes tend to be light-bodied, supple, and energetic. Take Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch, Austria’s all-star reds. They’re spicy and brooding, yet light on their feet. Or look at Lagrein, which hails from to Alto Adige in northeast Italy. It’s deep and plummy but rarely heavy. Refosco, which hails from FriuliVenezia Giulia, the northern Italian wine region that borders Slovenia and Austria, is similar. All these grapes take to a chill. And notably, they’re all low in tannins. If a wine is too tannic, that’s all you’ll taste once it’s cold. So don’t stock your refrigerators with Barolo and

Napa Cabernet. If you’re looking for something with a bit more oomph, Grenache, Barbera, and even some Zinfandel can handle a brisk serving temperature. When the mercury rises, wine enthusiasts in France cry out for “vins de soif,” a term that describes wines that are thirst-quenching and gulpable. Plenty of reds fit that description. And they belong on the summertime drinks menu. David White is the founder and editor of Terroirist.com, which was named “Best Overall Wine Blog” at the 2013 Wine Blog Awards.
