2015’s Swimwear Guide Swimsuit trends are always fun to look at each year, and 2015’s gear is no exception. This year creativity has reached a new level with swimwear that will catch your eye. Some of the trends will have you giving a double-take, and others’ will not leave much to the imagination. Here are the trends for this year’s swimsuit season! Crochet swimwear This is one of my favorite trends for this season. Crochet pieces are

absolutely beautiful, but the artwork of the crochet swimwear is stunning. There are fresh ideas out there that are full of color. Some are bikinis, but surprisingly, there are some really beautiful one piece crochet looks. Cultural notes This year’s swimsuit detailing pulls from the Native American heritage it seems. There is a lot of beading, fringe, tribal influences, and color reminiscent of the Indian culture. Although some pieces are breathtaking, be careful when you pick one out that the beading isn’t too cheap looking. Mesh Many swimsuits are taking on more mesh for 2015. It may seem inspired by a figure skating costume, but I like to think it is way hotter! And even though the fabric pieces seem to be skimpier when covering private areas, the mesh covering the stomach area may give some women more confidence in this year’s trend. It’s the next best thing to a bikini. Athletic wear/rash guard style Sporty looks have also made their way into 2015’s swimsuit line. In case you don’t have enough crop tops for

body type, so I suggest making sure you look good in a high waist before going out and buying one. Go bold with color There are so many styles to pick from this year, and after you decide what you want, go ahead and pick out one with extreme colors. This year’s trend is all about bold statements through print and color, so finding a swimsuit you are comfortable in is important!

this year, the swimsuit trendsetters have begun selling swimsuits that come with crop tops. The rash guard style is also making headlines, and bringing a surfing feel to the everyday swimwear. There are some really cool designs with long sleeved tops with cut outs. High-waist bottoms The classic high-waist is not only popping up in shorts, but it has made its way into swimwear. The modern take on this oldie pairs a simple bra top with a high-waist bottom. It’s a very elegant way to pull off a trend for 2015. This style isn’t for every

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA ENTRY MONUMENT SIGN NEARING COMPLETION Construction Progress at Alicia and Santa Margarita Parkways Moving Along

HUGE EXPANSE OF SANTA MARGARITA ENTRY MONUMENT SIGN envelopes the entire intersection of Alicia Parkway visible from several hundred feet away Heavy masonry work has begun work at the three-way intersection of Santa Margarita Parkway and Alicia Parkway where builders are currently erecting a 140-foot long monument sign. The Gateway Improvements Project is part of a seven-year Capital Improvement Program that was originally given the go-ahead last summer. The City budgeted $440,000 of Public Financing Authority (PFA) Bond Funds, which are mandated for use exclusively for infrastructure improvement projects within three years. Members of the Rancho Santa Margarita City Council voted unanimously to award the contract to an Orange construction company to beautify the city’s busiest intersection. The construction time which began in May, was estimated to be three months, with another three months to allow landscaping to proliferate. The project is anticipated to be completed in full by November. The northbound lane closest to the sidewalk on Santa Margarita Parkway, as well as the bike lane, was minimized from May to July during monument construction. It was closed between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. City officials calculate that there are about 55,000 trips daily through the intersection. “I think it gives an identity to the community,” former mayor and current council member Carol Page 8

Gamble said before approving the contract along with Mayor McGirr, Mayor Pro Tem Tony Beall and council member Mike Vaughn. “With other communities coming along as the region evolves, it’s important for us to make meaningful investments to keep up.” Mayor McGirr agreed, mentioning specifically the communities of Ladera Ranch, Talega and Rancho Mission Viejo. “It beautifies the city and in doing so, make us all the more proud of the City in which we live,” McGirr said. “ At its highest point, the slate finish concrete masonry sign will be 10 feet 6 inches. Facing Alicia Parkway, it will include six stone veneer finish columns. The City sought public input on the design elements included in the monument, and said that they considered community feedback before finalizing the design. Sixteen native tree species are being planted in adjacent O’Neill Regional Park as part of the landscaping, which will also include drought-tolerant plantation, drip irrigation and lighting. The project by Horizons Construction Company International might also include new street lamps as well. The center of the sign will be 47 feet long and about 6 feet at each end, rising in an arc at the center, where planners say, the city seal will rest over the city name.

Festival Runway Fashion Show Meets Art in Laguna Kathy Jones, Pat Kollenda and Anita Mangels. The Laguna Beach Festival of Arts “Festival Runway Fashion Show” was another WOW hit this year as Festival exhibitors competed to win cash prizes showing off their recycled creations where fashion meets art. The show is like “Project Runway” where artists are pitted against each other to see who would create the most inspired couture using reclaimed, reused or recycled material. In its seventh year, the show offered cash prizes of $1,000 in four categories. “Festival Runway Fashion is one of the Festivals most popular events of the summer,” said Susan Davis, director of special events for the Festival of Arts. “The artists put so much effort and ingenuity into crafting these stunning one-of-a-kind runway looks, it’s not to be missed!” The event was hosted by celebrity host Cristina Ferrare, author, philanthropist and co-host of The Hallmark Channel’s Emmy nominated series “Home & Family”. The judges this year were artist Regina Jacobson, costume designer Alex Jaeger and production/set designer Nelson Coates. Competing for the top prizes were festival exhibitors Jessica deStefano, Bradley Elsberry, Elizabeth McGhee, Richard Moren, Adam Neeley, Mariana Nelson, Casey Parlette and John Tolle. Winners who walked away with bragging rights for the categories were Brad Elsberry for Most Exciting Ensemble. With his “Rhapsody in Blue Denim”, model Erika Baldwin came out in a 100% post consumer, recycled denim building insulation cape revealing underneath a beautiful designer fitting gown made out of 50 pairs of used blue jeans. Casey Parlette won for Most Innovative Use of Materials for her creation that was inspired by her experience in the Amazon Jungle, its fauna and native peoples. Kissed by a halo of blue butterflies “Encantadora Mariposa” or Butterfly Enchantress was comprised of various types of wood, titanium scraps turned into butterflies, paper and plastic bags, dray cleaner bags, screen door mesh and feathers. Bringing home the Most Creative Concept was Elizabeth McGhee with her design “Bloom” made up of dozens of water jugs and plastic bags - the outfit was a fitting awareness of what goes into our oceans with a jellyfish like creation as according to one study “the amount of plastic that goes into the ocean every year is equal to five grocery bags per every foot of coastline around the globe”. Capturing the People’s Choice Award and the Most Glamorous Red Carpet Worthy Creation was Mariana Nelson with her jazzy piece made out of 2000 black cocktail straws dipped in gold. Her summer cruise to Greece made it possible for her to save that many along with thousands of dry cleaning bags encompassing the top. The hat is made of fan parts, old CD’s and zip ties - quite 1920’s style that made most everyone channel their inner flapper. As one of the nation’s oldest and most highly acclaimed juried fine art shows, the Festival of Arts features the artwork of 140 award-winning artists. Patrons can enjoy the work of exhibiting artists, demonstrations and art workshops, daily art tours, live music, special events, dine at on-site restaurants and much more. Coto De Caza Resident Patrick villasensor helps the Water Crisis in Uganda with his Eagle Scout Project! Eagle Scout candidate Patrick Villasenor lead a team of fellow Boy Scouts from Troop 818 in Rancho Santa Margarita on July 4th to educate the public about the water crisis in Uganda. Patrick’s Eagle Scout Project “Building Awareness of the Water Crisis in Uganda” was the focus of a booth he had at the Mission Viejo 4th of July Street Fair. He chose to partner with the “Wells of Life” organization for his Eagle Scout Project once he learned what great work this group does in building wells in Uganda to give people there the opportunity to have clean water to drink. He first learned about Wells of Life when he had the honor to be color guard for a celebration of Father Jim Dunning’s life in the Priesthood. Fr. Jim was Pastor of St. Kilian’s Catholic Church in Mission Viejo for many years and had a well dedicated in his honor at this celebration. Patrick was touched by the personal accounts of gratefulness the villagers in Uganda had when a well was constructed near their village. Before having a nearby water well, the girls and women walk daily at least 3 miles one

way to fetch water with a 44 pound jug on their heads, and they do not have the opportunity to go to school as bringing water to their homes is their responsibility. Because the water is not clean, the villagers have many water related health problems such as loss of vision from parasites in the water. Seventy percent of hospital admissions in East Africa are water related, and 1 in 4 children who die before the age of 5 are killed from water related diseases in East Africa. The photos of small children putting dirty water in whatever vessels they had, sometimes tires and small bottles to bring back to their home for their families to drink made Patrick realize he wanted to do something to help. It was on this day that he committed to working with Wells of Life to bring awareness of the need for clean drinking water in Uganda. At the booth at the Street Fair the Scouts demonstrated under Patrick’s leadership a portable water pump they made as part of his Eagle Scout project, and gave many children the opportunity to work the pump themselves. This showed them how a pump brings up water to simulate

how a water well works, and how this simple idea can help many people. The Scouts also showed the exhibits of clean and dirty drinking water, giving the visitors to the booth a visual understanding of the water the people in Uganda have to drink. There was a coloring table for the children where they could color pictures of an African village, water wells and pumps, and African animals to learn about life in Africa in a way they could understand. The Scouts gave water facts to passers by, and offered them cold bottles of water on this very warm day to remind them of the accessibility of clean water that we have. Patrick even had a dish of clean cool water for the dogs that came by which was appreciated by many of the 4 legged visitors! The booth was visited by many that attended the Mission Viejo Street Fair, including a family that had recently adopted their son from Uganda. They knew first hand the importance of Patrick’s Eagle Scout Project and the needs the people in Uganda face. Patrick was happy for their child that he would be raised in our great country where he will

experience the many opportunities and blessings we have and often take for granted on a daily basis, including the right of all people to have clean water to drink. For additional information about the Wells of Life Organization and how you may become involved in their efforts to bring clean drinking water to East Africa, please contact Wells of Life at www.WellsOfLife.org.

hanaeleh HORSE SANCTUARY RAISING FUNDS FOR HAY TO FEED RESCUED HORSES

Hanaeleh must buy hay from September to November to feed rescued horses. Hay prices, along with all other feed prices, continue to rise. They need your to continue to save the horses who arrive with no place left to go. Remember your pets in this extreme heat, too With extremely hot weather forecasted for the next few days, the Animal Services Center is urging animal owners to remember that heat affects our pets too. Animals have higher body temperatures than we do and less ability to cool down. Humans are covered with sweat glands, but our pets’ sweat glands are confined to their nose, mouth and pads of the feet. An over-heating dog, for example, can only regulate its own body temperature through panting, which is not terribly effective in extremely hot weather. You can take precautions to keep your pet safe during this heat wave: NEVER, under any circumstance, leave an animal in a parked car. This is very dangerous, as the temperatures inside a car increase greatly in hot weather. Always ensure your pet is kept in a well-ventilated area. It is not appropriate to house a pet in a garage or on a patio. Ideally, during

a heat wave, your pet should be kept indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. Be careful when walking your dog on hot pavement. Dogs’ paw pads can easily burn if they are forced to walk on a hot surface. Test the temperature of the pavement by placing your palm on it for one minute. If you can’t take the heat, neither can your dog. Exercise your dog in the early morning or cool evening hours. Be extra careful with dogs that are brachyalphalic, such as pugs, bulldogs and boxers. These breeds have a tougher time breathing, since their noses are short. If you notice that your pet is panting excessively, is extremely thirsty, has glazed eyes, or has bright red gums or a tongue, the animal may be overheating. In any of these cases, contact a veterinarian immediately. For more information, or if you are concerned about an animal that may be in distress, call 949-470-3045. The Coto de Caza News

W FAMILY FEATURES

hile kids and parents alike eagerly await the fresh start of a new school year, the back-to-school season is not without its share of stressors for busy families. The start of school means new schedules, teachers, shoes, backpacks and friends; as well as new academic challenges. Adding some fun and excitement to the newness can help smooth the way. For example, allowing kids to help choose their outfits for the first day of school can help diffuse that nervous anticipation. Similarly, the chance to put a fresh set of pens to use or show off a cool new notebook can provide a distraction from those first-day jitters. If the shopping itself is adding stress to your household, ease the back-to-school burden on your family with these helpful tips to simplify shopping for the school year ahead. Make note of your inventory. School lists often carry over each school year, so make sure you aren’t buying multiples of things you already own. Some supplies are more exciting when refreshed every year, but buying the same old boring ruler year after year is simply a waste of money. Make a list with your children. Put everything you need on that list, and be clear that once the list is done, it’s done. Having everyone on the same page with a complete list helps ensure nothing vital is forgotten, and the list can serve as a handy tool to keep your budget in check. Get uber organized using vibrant Sarasa gel pens by Zebra to create lists color-coded by kid or category to make your shopping more manageable. Begin shopping as early as possible. Hunt bargains before the traditional back-to-school season to get the best deals. Not only will you save some cash, shopping before the rush will give you a wider selection to choose from, so you’re sure to find the items you need in the styles you (and your kids) want. Spreading the shopping over several weeks or months also allows you to distribute the expense across several pay periods, helping lessen the chance that you blow your monthly budget with one mega shopping excursion. Be a savvy online shopper. Check out your favorite brands and retailers online, and sign up for their email alerts, so you’ll be in the know when the best deals hit. Many retailers now offer onlineonly specials, so watch ads closely to know when you’re better served making purchases in-store or online. Also keep an eye out for free or reduced shipping for extra savings that make it even cheaper than buying in person when you factor in the cost of gas. Remember that you can also rely on social media to follow back-to-school offers and hashtags. Create a back-up bin at home. You may find that your kids consistently run out of certain items midyear. Devote a special area of your home to keep extras in stock, and take advantage of sales during back-to-school season or buy in bulk to get a better price.

Page 24

Put quality ahead of price. While it’s tempting to go for cheap when your list is long, remember that sometimes quality buys actually save more in the long run. You can buy a ton of cheap pens that skip, or simply stop working. Or you can look at alternatives, such as Zebra’s Z-Grip brand, which are affordable, quality pens that allow children to focus on writing, not on the pen. Known for delivering a smooth-flowing writing experience at a great value, a Z-Grip pen truly delivers for young learners. Make your children shopping buddies. Involve your kids in the back-to-school shopping process by giving them a budget. Help them allocate money for all the expenses, including clothing, school supplies, shoes and more. Use the opportunity to talk about how shopping smart for the necessities can leave room for some fun buys, too. Reduce and reuse. Save plastic and money by encouraging kids to embrace reusable items, such as lunch bags in place of paper sacks and plastic containers instead of sandwich bags. If water bottles are allowed at school, look for a durable refillable option that can be used again and again. Make the old new again. Turn barely used items into something new by decorating or adding stickers. Not only is this a fun activity that can help get the kids excited about and engaged in planning for the year ahead, it’s easy on the budget and eco-friendly. Keep leftover supplies on hand to revive the enthusiasm with fresh designs at the end of the quarter or semester. Swap with other moms. Make back-to-school time more fun by hosting a swap event with other moms for clothing, backpacks, shoes, etc. It seems that kids are forever trading with their friends, so embrace that mindset and see what exciting new treasures you can find for your kids to call their own. The Coto de Caza News

Make It a Peaceful Shopping Experience Though back-to-school shopping can be fun, it can also be overwhelming. These tricks may help you add some Zen to the experience, or at least cut some of the chaos. Know yourself: Are you better at doing all of your shopping all at once, or would you rather make separate trips throughout a couple of weeks to ease the stress? There is no one “right” way to tackle back-to-school shopping; just go with what works best for you. Create a democratic shopping experience: Instead of taking it upon yourself to get the supplies you think your kids need, turn it into a fun experience for everyone to enjoy. Ask what your kids want and what colors they like. Encourage them to stimulate creativity with whimsical supplies, such as the fun and funky patterns of Cadoozles mechanical pencils. Want your high school or college bound academians to have a little extra swag for school? Look for a few simple purchases that reflect their confidence, such as Zebra Steel pens, with a sleek design perfect for the advancing student.

A Coup for Cupilor and Michelle Parker The Pair Top a Field of 44 to Win the Markel Insurance Grand Prix

Michelle Parker and Cupilor As the qualifying classes wind down for the popular Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series, the competition is heating up. With 44 entries in the class, Michelle Parker and Cross Creek Farm’s Cupilor were first clear and fastest for the win. Veteran FEI course designer Leopoldo Palacios set a tough track with a tight time allowed. He pointed out an interesting aspect of the class overall: “A 1.40m course can be more difficult than a 1.50m course. The height and the spread is a big factor, but it is not all of it.” With only four clean, one two-fault score and seven four-fault scores, the course tested the field. Over twenty entries ended their round with time faults. A number of competitors had rails early on in a diagonal line that demanded precision. The four element line started with a tall vertical at fence 4, then a mandatory steady six strides to 5a-b, a black-and-white combination, directly in three strides to fence 6, an oxer. What looked to be the first clear of the class, Hanna Mauritzson on Landlyst’s Leroy (owned by Swede Equine, LLC), narrowly missed that zero fault score, acquiring two time faults. Galloping in sixteenth, Page 26

Parker and Dutch Warmblood Cupilor (Lupricor x Libre) had an interesting yet successful experience in their first round. “Right off the bat, at fence number one, I thought, ‘It’s going to be a long way around,’” she admitted. In regards to the aforementioned diagonal line, Parker said, “I was just kicking for the back rail; I actually dropped my reins intentionally over 5b. He puts his head really low, so I just fed him the reins. I don’t think I had reins between there and the three strides. Then I just gathered them back up and on we went.” Despite the small number of contenders, it was an exciting, faultfree jump-off that had the crowd on the edge of their seats until the last horse crossed the finish line. The short course included two new jumps in a bending line, followed by tight roll back turns and a long gallop to the final oxer. Blazing the way in the jump-off, Michelle Parker and Cupilor set a time that could not be beat, at 37.75. Next in, Jamie Barge and Kylieco’s Luebbo, raced around clean, just under three-tenths of a second slower in 38.14. Try as they might, Josephina Nor Lantzman and her longtime partner Chello Z

The Coto de Caza News

couldn’t catch Michelle and ultimately finished in second place with a time of 37.97, just over two-tenths of a second slower. Last to go and once again fast, Daniel Anicet and his own Chacna took over the third spot with a time of 38.02, leaving Barge to claim the fourth place ribbon. Cupilor is no stranger to the Showpark winner’s circle. Since purchasing the gelding from Branscomb Farm as a four-yearold, Parker has piloted Cupilor to Champion in the 2013 YJC Six Year Old Finals, as well as the 2014 Seven

Year Old Finals. After graduating with honors from the Young Horse program, Cupilor is proving his grand prix potential as an eight-year-old. Stay tuned as the Showpark excitement continues this week, with a $7,500 U25 CashCall Mortgage Qualifier, the $50,000 Showpark Summer Grand Prix, presented by EquiFit, inc., and three divisions competing in the CPHA Foundation Equitation Finals.
