First Win for Jamie Barge and Luebbo in the $30,000 Summer Festival Grand Prix

Barge and Luebbo celebrate their first grand prix win Rain loomed over the grounds of the Del Mar Horse Park as the $30,000 Summer Festival Grand Prix, presented by SmartPak, got underway. It drizzled throughout the class, but the weather didn’t stop Jamie Barge on Kylieco’s Luebbo from earning her first Grand Prix win. Due to the rain, the jumps for the Grand Prix were moved to ground that had not been used for previous classes. Although only 20 of the original 32 entries ventured out onto the wet course, the footing held up well. FEI course designer Ivan Tagle presented a few tight rollbacks with options to go wider, kept the height to standard, and focused on the technical aspects. The eighth element on the course, a vertical-oxer-vertical triple combination, and the final jump, a big airy oxer with lots of flowers, were the trouble spots. Only five pairs made it to the jump-off, and just two of those went double clean. After the first three jump-off attempts scored one rail each, Nick Hein Ruus rode Big Red (Gerardo Pasquel, owner) double clear in 51.06. Last to go, Barge had the Page 8

advantage of knowing what she had to do for the win. Shaving corners just a touch and taking advantage of her horse’s big step, she crossed the timers clean in 44.41. Young yet determined, Barge has made a name for herself on the California grand prix circuit. Earning a spot in several jump-offs and consistently bringing home ribbons, the big win had eluded her for a couple of seasons. Most recently, she finished 3rd in the Markel Insurance Grand Prix at the Blenheim Red, White, and Blue Classic on Kylieco’s Lasse and was second in Friday’s Markel Insurance Grand Prix with Luebbo. She has been riding Luebbo, a 10-year-old Oldenberg, for two years now and she loves his ‘I’ll do my best’ attitude. “I still can’t believe it,” she said of her win. “My horse has been good this week, jumping really well. I’m really proud of him today.” When asked if she considered scratching the class, she replied, “Honestly, yes! I almost scratched before I went in. And I thought, you know what, I’ll jump the first jump, see how I feel,” she explained. “I went in

and he took me right to the first jump. So then I thought, okay I guess we’re going.” On this date last year, Barge’s coach Gabby Salick won this same grand prix, making the victory today that much sweeter. Segerstrom Center Salutes Local Business Leaders

Stephanie Watts, “Aretha”, Nancy Muth, Dee Higby, Photo by Segerstrom Center for the Arts held its second annual Arts and Business Kimberly April Leadership Awards Dinner fundraiser to support Center education and community engagement programs; the event raised $300,000. The evening included a networking cocktail party, dinner and awards in Samueli Theater, a performance of the hit Broadway show Motown the Musical in Segerstrom Hall and a post-performance cast party hosted by Scott’s Restaurant and Bar. This year, the Center honored Rick J. Muth, president, ORCO Block & Hardscape, with the Distinguished Leader Award and Andrew Y. Low, vice president and senior director, BNY Mellon Wealth Management, with the Rising Leader Award. The event was chaired by the co-chairs of the Center’s Business Leadership Committee: John L. Ginger, Board Chairman of the Center’s Board of Directors and CEO of J. Ginger Masonry and William F. Meehan, partner, Rutan and Tucker and a Center board member. The room was decorated in great detail with a “Motown” feel, from the decorations on the table to the music, everyone was transported back to when Berry Gordy launched musical greats such as Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. John Ginger opened the evening’s awards presentations remarking, “When a community fosters a strong arts sector, neighborhoods transform, attracting new businesses and bright minds. Creativity flourishes, creating Andrew Low and Bill Meehan, Photo by Doug Gifford a vibrant, lively culture fueling an unstoppable economic engine. We are lucky to have such vibrancy here in Orange County, thanks to the support of the business leaders in this room tonight and, especially, our honorees, Rick Muth and Andrew Low.” While introducing Rick Muth, John Ginger noted, “Rick’s efforts have contributed significantly toward building Orange County’s thriving arts economy and, quite literally, toward building the Center itself.” Accepting his award, Muth said, “The reason we are here is to raise funds for the enrichment of our community by community education and leadership for our community. After the performance, a post-performance cast party hosted by Scott’s Restaurant and Bar was enjoyed by everyone. Dancing went on until almost midnight with the cast and VIP’s in attendance. For more than 30 years, Segerstrom Center for the Arts has brought arts programs to schools and community events throughout Orange County. It is the leading provider of arts education programs of any not-for-profit arts organization on the West Coast, reaching nearly 300,000 young people, adults and educators each year in six California counties. In addition to providing opportunities to enhance knowledge of and appreciation for the arts, when Center programs are integrated by teachers into their daily classroom lessons, they also deepen learning experiences and improve academic achievement for their students. Art-A-Fair Old West Quick Draw Sunday, August 9th, 2015 It is Sunday, August 9th, a glorious summer day. You are at Art-A-Fair, Laguna Beach’s world class art festival, happily strolling among its 125 extraordinary local and national artists. Suddenly, you hear a deep voice shout, “Draw partner.” You don’t reach for your gun, you reach for your paintbrush. You are in the middle of Art-A-Fair’s Old West Quick Draw, a unique event for participants and observers alike. Art-A-Fair throws out a challenge and provides the opportunity for artists of every experience level to paint, draw or photograph live Old West models, available for one hour. There is no charge except the Art-A-Fair entry fee. On Sunday August 9th, the schedule is as follows: 10:00 AM the Western models arrive; 10:30 – 11:30 AM - Quick Draw; 11:45 AM – Lunch (at additional charge). Artists will need a signed release from the Old West models for any images (resulting from this event) for resale purposes. This is a day for everyone to

enjoy. Artists challenge their ability to create in a limited amount of time, while working with live models. Observers can enjoy watching the creative process come to fruition. Art-A-Fair offers many pleasures through the summer season. Live music plays for listening

Capistrano Unified School District Announces Early, Pre-Labor Day Starts for Next Two Academic Years The Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) announced earlier pre-Labor Day start dates for its next two academic years. The Board of Trustees recently approved starting the 2016-2017 school year on Monday, August 15, 2016. This follows the previously announced Tuesday, August 25, 2015, start date for the 2015-2016 school year. The earlier start in 2016 will align the calendars of CUSD’s elementary, secondary and adult transition programs with local colleges and Orange County school districts and eliminate breaks in the flow of classroom instruction. “The Board of Trustees has taken a major step forward in optimizing instructional time for our students and teachers and facilitating opportunities for academic growth,” said Superintendent Kirsten M. Vital. “Starting the school year before Labor Day will ensure the most continuous instructional period that Capistrano Unified School District has had in years. With the semester now ending before winter break, we have lessened the number of breaks in instructional time within a particular course of study, and our students, teachers, and their families will now

be able to enjoy a ‘true’ break, with the semester ending at the winter break.” In addition to the elementary, secondary and adult transition program calendars being brought into alignment, the CUSD and Saddleback College instructional calendars will also now align. This will better position CUSD students to take advanced coursework and participate in a wider range of summer programs

offered at the college. Students in Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs will also benefit by receiving additional direct instruction during the school year to optimize instructional opportunities prior to testing. This schedule will also better align with post-secondary programs, allowing our graduating seniors to participate in graduation ceremonies as well as

college transition activities. “Prioritizing instructional time in the classroom is a top priority,” said CUSD Board President Lynn Hatton-Hodson, “and it is incumbent upon the Board of Trustees to facilitate as much of that quality education time as possible to ensure an environment most conducive to student achievement.”

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO’S HISTORIC EGAN HOUSE SOON TO BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC San Juan Capistrano’s historic Egan House, soon to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places, will once again be open to the public. Ellie’s Table at The Egan House, a bakery and café of homemade proportions, will open this winter in downtown San Juan Capistrano. Built in 1883, the iconic solid-brick building was the centerpiece of downtown and home to Judge Richard Egan, also dubbed “the King of Capistrano” for the picnics, balls, parties and dinners he hosted. Because of the lively social activities held there, the Egan House became affectionately known as “Harmony Hall” during the 19th century. Rooted in similar tradition and history, Ellie’s Table at The Egan House boasts three generations of hosting culinary events and pays homage to matriarch Eleanor Mastroianni, whose baking talents and classic cuisine earned the family slogan: “Happiness is Homemade.” Their first location, Ellie’s Table at North Beach next to the historic Casino in San Clemente, is already a local hotspot where the only downside can be finding a table. Armand Barragan, Ellie’s grandson and Chief Operating Officer of Jay’s Catering (a family-owned business founded in 1967 and arm of Ellie’s Table) immediately recognized the fit and setting of Egan House as the perfect second location for their café. “We wanted to find a place that shared Ellie’s vibrant personality and warmth, and the Egan House is just that,” Barragan said. “With its rich history and charm, it’s the perfect home for our neighborhood café. We are excited to serve more South OC residents, and can’t wait to be a part of San Juan Capistrano’s amazing community.” Restoration of the Egan House is underway

by owner and long-term San Juan Capistrano resident Bill Griffith, with completion and occupancy targeted for this winter. The brick exterior has been restored, new landscaping is installed, fresh flowers in the front pots are blooming, and the porch lights are on at night. Griffith credits Dennis Hogan, also a long-time local resident and 30-year commercial broker, for his vision in recognizing the opportunity of bringing the Ellie’s Table legacy to historical downtown. Hogan, who represented Ellie’s Table, and Dan Friess of Mission Commercial Properties worked

together to ensure that Ellie’s Table at The Egan House will be one of the next exciting ventures to open its doors in San Juan Capistrano. LOCAL ELKS LODGE MEMBER Harvey Boelts HONORED The Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge was the scene of an Elks time-honored ceremony; “The Jeweling of an Elks District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler.” The proud recipient of the jewels of the office for the Fraternal year 2015 – 2016 was the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge Past State Vice President Harvey Boelts. Harvey joined the Mission Viejo Lodge in 1999 and progressed through the various positions within the organization to his present day honor. The duties of the high office of District Deputy include the supervision of the ten (10) Elks Lodges in Orange County. Harvey and wife Betty live in San Juan Capistrano and have three (3) sons and six (6) grandchildren all living in Orange County. The event was kept a family affair as guests enjoyed a special dinner prepared by sons Dennis and Michael Boelts of Mission Viejo with the able assistance of other Boelts family members. Elks dignitaries, officers, and members from all the surrounding cities and Lodges were in attendance and were greeted by Lodge Exalted Ruler (ER) Camacho Alvarez, wife Mary Ann, and the corps of Mission

Viejo, Saddleback Valley Lodge officers. ER Camacho welcomed the guests and introduced Lodge Advisor and Secretary Norm Jones. Jones, himself a past District Deputy, acted as master of ceremonies for the evening’s program. He also made the presentation of the jewels of office to District Deputy Harvey. In his acceptance speech, District Deputy Boelts thanked the many Elks responsible for supporting him in his efforts through the years leading to his appointment. He gave special praise to wife Betty and said, “It’s a fact that none of us men or women in Elkdom could have achieved our successes without the help of our spouses, families and loved ones.” Among his many accomplishments, District Deputy Boelts is credited for his outstanding management of the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge’s Bingo Program and successful Charity Committee. He also served as Orange Coast District Scholarship Chairman and Americanism Chairman. He pledged to continue his Lodge work in the Saddleback Valley community as well as fulfill his responsibilities to all the Lodges of Orange County. Also

Segerstrom Center for the Arts Movie Mondays 2015 finale Summer is around the corner and that means Segerstrom Center’s Movie Mondays will soon return for the ninth year. Each year, thousands of film lovers gather on the Center’s Arts Plaza to enjoy evenings of free fun-filled activities, outdoor dining and screenings of five films on consecutive Mondays. Segerstrom Center’s Season Preview Event Offers Audiences a Sneak Peek into the 2015 – 2016 Broadway Season Segerstrom Center for the Arts presents its annual Season Preview event highlighting the blockbuster 2015 – 2016 Broadway Series on Monday, August 17 at 7 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.
