31st Annual Dana Point Tall Ships Festival This weekend September 12-13, 2015. Sunset Parade Friday September 11. Every September the Dana Point Harbor becomes a forest of towering masts, billowing sails, and stately wooden ships in early September during the annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, the largest gathering of historic sailing ships on the West Coast. www.tallshipsfestival.com The Toshiba Tall Ships Festival started in 1984 and is the Ocean Institute’s premier annual event, drawing thousands to Dana Point’s beautiful harbor. This festival celebrates the return of the brig Pilgrim from her annual summer sail as an ambassador of good will for the City of Dana Point and the Ocean Institute. Equally important, the festival highlights the community’s rich cultural heritage as chronicled in Richard Henry Dana’s classic American novel, “Two Years Before the Mast”, when the Pilgrim explored and traded along this coastline in the early days while California was still owned by Mexico The brig Pilgrim and the other tall ships of her era represent an important chapter in our nation’s history. This era represents history’s last largescale technological transportation system whose fabrication and implementation had little or no carbon footprint. In evoking the history, heritage, and romance of the Age of Sail, Tall Ship festivals also symbolize the capacity of humanity to achieve world-changing developments through the use of

sustainable technologies. About the Ocean Institute The Ocean Institute has become nationally known for its hands-on marine science, environmental education and maritime history programs. More than 115,000 K-12 students and 8,000 teachers annually participate in the Institute’s 61 award-winning, immersion style programs. The Institute is primarily an educational facility specializing in innovative marine and social science programs. 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr. Dana Point, CA 92629. 949.496.2274 www.ocean-institute.org About Tall Ships America: The Tall Ships Challenge Series Tall Ships America’s TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® is an annual series that rotates on a three-year cycle between the Atlantic Coast, Great Lakes and the Pacific Coast. Since 2001, Tall Ships America has coordinated more than 87 TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® events in 54 cities, attracting more than 22 million visitors and stimulating in excess of $1.8 billion in aggregate economic and tourism activity for the host ports. Founded in 1973, Tall Ships America serves as the hub for tall ship activity, expertise, and information in North America, and is commended by Congress as the National Sail Training

organization representing the United States in the international forum. In addition to organizing the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series, Tall Ships America supports the people, ships and programs of sail training through grants, scholarships, conferences, education, publications, and public events and advocacy.

Bells will soon be ringing, and parents may experience a sense of déjà vu for the first several weeks of school. That’s because the early part of each new school year is commonly spent reversing the effect of “summer brain drain” – when kids lose skills they mastered the previous year. According to a recent survey by DSM Nutritional Products and Pop Warner, 78 percent of parents are concerned about students’ difficulties retaining what they learned in school throughout the summer. A majority of surveyed parents understand the role of nutrition in physical and academic performance, but don’t make the connection to nutrition’s role in preventing brain drain. While many parents encourage their children to take vitamins and minerals to supplement nutrition, nearly half admit they aren’t clear about which nutrients support children’s brain health. What’s more, maintaining a well-rounded and healthy diet and taking vitamins and other essential

nutrients that support brain health ranked significantly lower than other strategies parents use to prevent brain drain, such as sports and academic activities. Nutrition plays an important role in brain health year-round, says Elizabeth Somer, a nationally acclaimed registered dietitian, nutritionist and author. To help keep your students’ minds sharp as they head back to school, consider these tips from Somer: Eat fatty fish twice a week for dinner or supplement omega-3s. Omega-3s are highly concentrated in the brain and important to brain health, yet according to research published in the British Medical Journal, the average American diet contains less omega-3s from seafood than most other developed countries. Children and adults should get the recommended two servings of fatty fish, such as salmon, per week. Offer a variety of healthy food options in the house. Giving children choices teaches them to take care

of their bodies and empowers them to make better food decisions in the future. Stock the kitchen with lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, such as baby carrots, berries and bananas for snacks, and broccoli, green peas and mashed sweet potatoes for dinner. The nutrients in these foods are important for the brain. Along with calcium, low-fat milk supplies vitamin D, which is a nutrient essential for brain development. Consider taking a multivitamin. No one eats perfectly. It is important to talk with your physician or registered dietitian about whether you or your children could benefit from a multivitamin. According to research published in The Journal of Nutrition, only 10 percent of Americans get the nutrients they need from their food, and supplementation can help fill that gap. “We are inviting Coto residents to attend a Town Hall meeting where we can present the proposed project for homes to be built on a portion of the property owned by William and Willa Dean Lyon,” said Carol McDermot spokes person for the Lyon family. The majority of the 134-acre estate will remain untouched and the proposed project will site twenty eight additional homes on approximately 60 acres of the estate. The plan proposes to retain many existing natural features of the site including sensitive habitat and oak trees as well as ridgelines. The resource preservation area within the Lyon Estate will be expanded from approximately 6 acres to 30 acres.

The informational meeting is being held at the Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club on Saturday September 12 at 10:00 and all residents are invited. Light refreshments will be served. Spokesperson Carol McDermott indicated that, “General and Willa Dean Lyon have treasured their home and property for the entire 30 years they have lived in Coto and enjoyed raising their son here. They continue to live in their home and host their family often. They look forward to adding new homes on a part of the estate in keeping with the fine tradition of Coto living”.

Everyone has heard that saying, but unfortunately, breakfast is also often the most forgotten meal of the day. CRUNCHTIME! Tesoro Titans Meet Mater Dei Monarchs

MOB SCENE: Mater Dei ball carrier mugged near goal line Photography by Aaron Hartwell On a muggy, moonlit Friday night perfect for football, busloads of energetic Tesoro Titan fans bailed out of their buses and vans and burst into the Eddie West Field sometimes known as the Santa Ana Stadium next to the Orange County Central Jail. The Tesoro team and their fans let the Mater Dei crowd know that they were ready for a rumble and everyone in the stadium was soon certain of that. Tesoro stunned the mighty Mater Dei Monarchs with a spirited 18 yard scoring run by Quarterback Devon Modster giving the Titans the 7-0 early lead. The quarterback also scored on a later 6 yard sprint past the goal line and completed 24 of his 35 passes. With the Monarchs surging ahead to lead at half time 14-7 then scored again early in the third quarter to bring the score to 21-7.Tesoro suddenly surged again, bringing everyone in the stadium to their feet with a seventy- six yard, eleven play

combination culminating in another incredible six yard scoring drive bringing a gasp to the Mater Dei crowd as Tesoro cut the Monarchs lead to 21-14 with but four minutes remaining on the clock in the third quarter. Titan linemen and defensive backs soon stymied another attack by Mater Dei and after a surprise penalty after a forced punt, Mater Dei marched ahead to increase their lead to 28-14 and escalated their offense for the remainder of the game. Tesoro cheerleaders were undismayed and the loyal Titan crowds were hoarse from their intense cheers throughout the final whistle signaling the end of an intense and immensely interesting competition between two talented teams. Santiago High School had no defensive answer for the multi-faceted offense as the Eagles cruise to victory, 2-0 on the season

Senior Alec Stewart has become a headache for opposing linemen, racking up three sacks and seven solo tackles in the first two games. Writer: Sean Zeitler Photos by: Robert Russell For the second consecutive week, the Santa Margarita Eagles football team hit the road as they traveled to Santiago High School to take on the Sharks in a highly anticipated matchup. When all was said and done, the Eagle faithful left Corona with a 59-14 victory as the Eagles improved their record to 2-0 on the season. The Santa Margarita Eagles were led by Stanford-commit KJ Costello’s efficient evening, completing 2835 passes for 423 yards and five touchdowns. In the first two games of the season, Costello has now completed 70% of his passes for 773 yards and eight touchdowns to no interceptions. Behind a staunch offensive line, Costello has had plenty of time to pick apart secondary’s with

a slew of options at receiver. Costello’s main target is senior Dylan Crawford, who in the first two games has managed nine receptions for 235 yards and four touchdowns. Junior Grant Calcaterra is making a name for himself as a sure hand, hauling in 10 catches for 195 yards and a touchdown. Standout basketball point guard Noah Rasheed has shown that he has handles on the court and the football field, as he is averaging 117.5 yards per game on 13 catches with a long of 80 yards and a touchdown. The Eagles’ aerial assault would not be possible without the stellar rushing game in large part to senior Trey Green in the backfield. Green is averaging nearly 10 yards per carry (9.8) on 20 carries for a total of 195 yards and two touchdowns. What does not show up in the box score is

Registration Now Open for Orange County Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19 Orange County Coastkeeper expects thousands to gather to pick up trash across 91 miles of coastline. Orange County residents can now sign up to participate in Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19. Volunteers across the state head to California’s coast and inland waters by the thousands to lend their hands in support of clean beaches and waterways. This year, Orange County Coastkeeper and Jim Meyer with Trails4All take on all 42-cleanup sites in Orange County—organizing site captains and volunteer registration. The cleanup efforts help collect trash and debris from sites spanning across 91 miles of coastline. Last year, 7,053 Orange County volunteers collected more than 67,000 pounds of trash and recyclable materials during the three-hour event. With increased awareness about the impact of water pollution, Coastkeeper aims to beat that mark this year. “Most people don’t think about their personal impact on pollution until they see items lying on the sand that they throw away every

day,” says Courtney James, Orange County Coastkeeper ’s coastal cleanup director. “It is nothing short of inspiring to see thousands of people cleaning our waters and realizing that they can influence the future of our natural environment.” Vast amounts of debris litter the world’s waters causing harm to oceans, wildlife, coastal economies and beach-goers. Beaches serve as collecting spots for trash that travels from city streets and highways via inland waterways, storm drains, sewers and on the wind. Beach cleanups stand as a last line of defense to prevent debris from entering the ocean. Coastkeeper aspires to accomplish a zero-waste event and asks that volunteers bring their own cleanup supplies including a bucket or reusable bag, gloves and reusable water bottle. In addition to volunteering, residents and businesses can support Coastal Cleanup Day with donations and sponsorships. To register for Coastal Cleanup Day and find the site closest to you, visit www.coastkeeper.org/ccd. For

more information, contact Courtney James at courtney@coastkeeper. org. ORANGE COUNTY COASTKEEPER: Founded in 1999, the mission of Coastkeeper is to protect and promote sustainable water resources that are swimmable, drinkable, and fishable. Coastkeeper is a nonprofit clean water organization that serves as a proactive steward of our fresh- and

saltwater ecosystems. We work collaboratively with diverse groups in the public and private sectors to achieve healthy, accessible, and sustainable water resources for the region. Ribs, Pigs and Watermelon Raises $50,000 for American Family Housing As we say goodbye to summer and another season of spectacular things to do along the Southern California coast, American Family Housing’s 4th annual fundraiser, Ribs, Pigs and Watermelons Professional BBQ Competition and Summer Festival, is sure to be remembered for its feel-good cause and unique theme of events that attracted thousands to Huntington State Beach during the August 7-9 weekend. Shedding light and a little lightheartedness on a somber subject, the non-profit organization teamed up with a long list of loyal sponsors to pull off a culinary extravaganza that raised awareness and critical funds to support homeless adults and families in Orange, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties. With over fifty professional BBQ teams filling a quarter-mile stretch of the State Beach parking lot alongside the boardwalk, the event engulfed the beach with that unmistakable smell of spicy barbeque smoke and the powerful scent of craft beers, raising over $50,000 for American Family Housing programs that provide an array of urgently needed social services and affordable housing options to vulnerable populations facing barriers to housing stability. Sponsors of the event included Yelp OC, Southwest Material Handling, Inc., OC Mazda, Rainbow Environmental Services, Chef Jason Fullilove, Hub International, US Bank and BJ’s Brewhouse, who provided all of the handcrafted sodas and beers for guests. Sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society, the event attracted top nationally ranked BBQ teams -- including teams from the TLC reality television show BBQ Pitmasters -- who competed for the $10,000 grand prize while cooking up some savory meats for the hungry crowds. The winning teams included Grand Champion Pig Skin BBQ from Iowa and Reserved Grand Champion Hickory & Spice from Tustin, Calif. The People’s Choice Award, determined by the public in attendance, went to Twisted Brisket from Costa Mesa, Calif. The best tastings throughout the weekend included bacon candy, moink balls—an all-beef meatball wrapped in bacon—ribs, chicken, tri-tip, brisket, sausage, bacon-flavored kettle corn and cotton candy and more. Thousands of pounds of watermelon were on hand for consuming, with competitions attracting children and adults alike. On Saturday afternoon, families joined in for the Kids Que, an event that allowed children ages 6 to 15 to compete in their own BBQ competition. Parents stood by as their children barbequed burgers and steaks. Team “Brenden’s Smokin’ Hart” won the 6 to 10-year-old division and team “Jayden’s Smokin’ Hart” won the 11 to 15-year-old division. Guests who wanted a home-on-the-range experience had the unusual opportunity to compete in cow-milking contests, and for those who were less apt to get their faces and hands dirty, a classic car show provided an atmosphere of old-fashioned fun. Without a doubt, the eating contests provided the most entertainment for both participants, who got to stuff their faces, and the bystanders who watched in shock and awe. People truly ate their hearts out, devouring ribs and watermelon in record time. Later, they got a chance to dance it all off with live music from some great local bands that included the American Vagrants, Rockaholics, and Maureen and the Mercury 5. Coto’s Rancho Colinas Neighborhood Labor Day Block Party Finds Residents Hearty to Party on Summer’s Final Weekend

PLENTY OF SMILES TO GO AROUND at the Ranchos Colinas neighborhood block party last weekend.

MOUNTAINS OF FINE FOOD and sumptuous spreads were arrayed on attractively decorated tables.

GOOD NEIGHBORS, GOOD FOOD make a good time for all.

TEMPTING ASSORTMENTS of delicious desserts were too good to pass up.

HAPPY FACES ALL AROUND the tables for this end-of- summer get together

Coto de Caza residents are a festive crowd in any season but last weekend found residents of Coto’s exclusive Ranchos Colinas neighborhoods were in the mood to laugh, pour a little wine, and set fire to some premium burgers and dance in the streets while the hearty smell of barbeque filling the warm summer air with scents of Labor Day fun. Although the inhabitants of this elite neighborhood missed the popular outdoor event last year, frolicking residents were ready to rock and roll last weekend blocking off the roads and pulling out all the stops to traditional laid back behavior in favor one last blast to hail the final exit of summer. The weather was warm enough for water balloons and indeed a few soakings and splashdown skirmishes brought hoots of joy to the neighborhood kids who howled with delight. Parents brought their youngsters along and several enthusiastic teenagers tagged along as well. An amplifier cranked up to the hit tunes added to the excitement as the youngsters began to hop along aboard a giant green bounce-house Sumptuous spreads of delicious desserts were attractively arrayed on tables decorated in flashy holiday hues. Driveways were lined with chilled coolers filled with elegant iced-down beverages. Several guests brought lawn chairs to lounge around. Those who enjoyed a cold beer or a chilled chardonnay throughout the afternoon didn’t need to keep a careful count as the party was within walking distance to everyone’s front door. Although some arrived in golf carts, most Ranchos Colinas residents strolled in bearing gifts of succulent salads or festive cakes, cookies or confections. Although the event was expected to wind down after dinner, most of the residents decided to linger and renew friendships with neighbors, clinking glasses and sharing hearty handshakes with each other rather than just a wave of the hand. As sunset descended on the festive crowds in the Ranchos Colinas neighborhood block party many were heard to remark on the joy of getting together once again and made plans to reinstate the annual traditional gathering.

5 Ways to Save Money on School Gear Families are working to stretch their back-to-school shopping budgets further this year, according to a recent survey by the National Retail Foundation. But saving money isn’t just about how much you spend on supplies; it’s also about making school supplies and equipment last as long as possible. Here are some tips for protecting your students’ school gear to help stretch your budget – and their gear: Talk with children about handling tech devices. Kids will be kids, and sometimes that means they’ll be tough on their stuff. Unfortunately, their school-mandated tech devices – such as calculators, tablets and laptops – can’t always take the beating. To reduce the risk of accidental breakage, talk to kids about proper handling and storage of their devices and the potential risks for breakage when drops, spills and hard impacts occur. Lighten the backpack load. Between books and laptops, students tend to pack a lot of heavy items in their backpacks during the course of a school year. As the load increases, backpack zippers may break, and seams may tear from the daily stress. Reduce the wear and tear by ensuring your kids don’t over-pack their bags. Not only will this reduce strain on their backpacks, it will lighten the load on

students’ backs as well. Consider a protection plan. Research shows that some school essentials – such as backpacks and laptop batteries – break or stop functioning within the first 1-2 years of use. To help keep costs down, many retailers offer reputable protection plans, such as SIMPLR, which can help repair or replace the equipment for free or a fraction of what you’d normally pay on your own. Sharing isn’t always caring. Even if your child handles his calculator or

laptop with care, his friends might not. Establish guidelines with your kids at the start of the school year about what items can be shared with others at school and which cannot. For those things that can be shared, consider encouraging your child to establish ground rules when sharing with friends. Guidelines could include when the item should be returned, tasks for which the item will be used and an understanding that items will be handled with care. Don’t forget about bikes. Kids

who ride their bikes to school can be just as hard on their bikes as they are on their school supplies. A tuneup at the start of the school year can keep the bike running smoothly and help catch wear and tear, such as damaged spokes or worn tires and brake pads. For more information on protection plans for your child’s school supplies and tech devices, visit simplrplan. com. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Can your morning cup of joe make the world a better place? Can’t start your day without a cup of coffee? You’re not alone; 63 percent of adult Americans drink coffee every day, according to the 2012 National Coffee Association’s National Coffee Drinking Trends study. All those cups of joe, however, can do more than give Americans the boost they need to wake up. They also have the potential to help coffee farmers around the world. A growing number of Americans are embracing Fair Trade, which provides farmers a fair price for their crops, resulting in a better quality of life in their communities. Fair Trade benefits more than 1.2 million families in 70 developing countries throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America, according to Fair Trade USA - a leading Fair Trade certification organization. The majority of Americans (74 percent) believe it’s important to purchase products that are priced to compensate producers fairly, yet only one-in-five Americans (18 percent) are purchasing Fair Trade regularly, according to new research from Fair Trade USA. Fair Trade results in quality products, because when farmers are paid more, they can invest back into the quality of the products they produce. “More and more people

are shopping at their local farmers’ markets, because they want quality products, and want to know where these products come from and that they are grown or produced in socially and environmentally responsible ways. Fair Trade is like a global farmers’ market - it extends those same values to products that aren’t grown locally,” says Lindsey Bolger, vice president, Coffee Sourcing & Excellence for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Inc. (GMCR). GMCR purchased more than 54 million pounds of Fair Trade Certified (TM) coffee in 2012, making the company the largest purchaser of Fair Trade Certified coffee in the world. In addition, through the community development funds that are generated by Fair Trade purchases, farmers and their families can help address other community needs, such as improving roads, building health care facilities and ensuring access to education for their children. “Purchasing Fair Trade products is a simple choice that can make a big difference in coffee communities around the world,” says Bolger. In 2012 alone, GMCR’s Fair Trade Certified coffee purchases contributed to more than $10 million in Fair Trade community development

funds. Fair Trade Certified products include tea-and herbs,-cocoa,-rice,vanilla,-sugar,-flowers, fruit, wineand-apparel. Coffee-is the most popular-Fair Trade-product in the U.S. and is a good model for how Fair Trade can benefit both farmers and consumers. Many coffee farmers are small landowners in remote locations and lack access to credit, so they are vulnerable to middlemen who offer cash for their coffee at a fraction of its value. Fair Trade means these farmers receive a fair price for their beans, which they can invest back into the quality of the coffee and the

health of their communities.Finding Fair Trade Certified products is easier than most shoppers think. Many popular coffees are available as Fair Trade Certified blends and Green Mountain Coffee (R) offers one of the largest selections of Fair Trade Certified coffees in the U.S. This includes one of the brand’s newest coffees, Three Continent Blend, which combines the flavors and aromas of three continents (South America, Africa and Asia) in one harmonious Extra Bold blend. ELKS ROUND UP OVER $4,000 AT THEIR ANNUAL WESTERN NITE HOEDOWN FUND RAISER FOR HANDICAPPED KIDS CHARITIES Event chair, Exalted Ruler Camacho Alvarez of the Mission Viejo / Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge said, “This was our 33th year for the Western Night Dinner-Dance and it just keeps getting better and better each year!” All of the cowgirls and cowboys that attended enjoyed a hoot’n good time, knowing that the biggest benefactors of the evening are the handicapped kids and the Elks charities supported by this annual event. Over $4,000 was raised; all destined for the Elks community charities. The Elks Lodge room on Marguerite Parkway was once again transformed into a delightful old western town & country scene with hand painted wall murals and included a jail house that practically everyone frequented by night’s end. Deputies, Dottie White and Mike Klinger arrested everyone within sight and jailbirds happily paid the jailer Elk Don Berreth a small fine (all for the handicapped kids) to buy their freedom. Exalted Ruler Camacho Alvarez and chief judge Mary Ann Costello presented awards for best costumes to John (Fish) Fischle and companion Nancy Ingham with runner-ups Chuck & Jean Chapman. The full house of cowboys and cowgirls in western attire feasted on BBQ tri-tip, BBQ chicken, country beans, corn & salad, topped off with apple pie, all prepared by Elks volunteers Russ Sindt, Kevin

Lindley, Bob Hauxhurst and a crew of kitchen helpers made-up of Elks Vicky Long, Dave & Sheryl Tucker, and Julie Thomas. Girl Scouts of Troop 261 served the meal, and were given a donation by the Lodge. Music was provided by a rocking country & western group “Borderline”. This was the band’s first appearance at the event and they kept the dance floor filled the entire evening. Exalted Ruler Camacho Alvarez acted as MC. He welcomed the guests and thanked the many workers who helped to decorate and make the night a success. They included: Judy and Mike Klinger, Bob & Linda Hauxhurst, Kory Klinger, Mike Zaic, Vickey & Best costume award winners John Fischle & Nancy Ingham and Jean Mike Long, Jerry Gross, Jennifer & Chuck Chapman James, Jinnae & Jim Wessling, Mike & Vicky Long, Frank Scarpine, Jack and Sandy Jacobs, Rick Wilson, Andy Costello, and PERs Charlie Hart, and Gloria LeCouvre. The Mission Viejo / Saddleback Elks Lodge No. 2444, celebrating forty-five (45) years of service to the Saddleback Valley communities, is one of ten lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. The BPOE is a charitable organization with a 145 year history of giving, “Elks Care, Elks Share.” For information on Elks charities call (949) 830-3557. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (916) 939-0772 or visit this Internet Web site www.nationwideposting.com, using the file number assigned to this case 14-14036. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
