Mariners 936 sea scouts, celebrated the end to another great summer with a last cruise to Catalina Island. Mariners 936 sea scouts, based in Dana Point harbor, have celebrated the end to another great summer with a last cruise to Catalina Island. The youth and adults headed to the west end of the Island on Friday on four large sailboats, spending time at the Isthmus and then to Emerald cove, rendezvousing with other scouts ships for the English George Regatta; a competition of maritime skills. The Mariner team took 1st place in the “Round Indian Rock” race as well as taking time for socializing and fun in the sun! Congratulations to Teddy Carter and Sarah Wyman of Mariners 936 for their 2nd place win in the Koch cup qualifier event this weekend at Newport Sea base, earning them the chance to compete against scouts from all over the world at the 2014 William I. Koch International Sea Scout Cup. Mariners Sea Scouts will kick off their 36th fall season with an open house and informational meeting September 11th at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Orange County Sailing & Events Center, 34451 Ensenada Place at the Dana
Point Harbor and will include a tour of facility and refreshments for prospective new members. Youth from throughout south Orange County are invited to learn about the opportunities available with the local Sea Scouts program. Mariners offers a co-ed boating program to youth ages 12 to 18 designed to allow kids an opportunity to have fun with their friends in boats of all sizes at a very low cost. Recreational sailing and racing, along with fun weekend trips to Catalina and the Channel Islands, allow participants to become fully competent in handling boats of all sizes. No previous boating experience is required. Mariners offers an extensive fleet of small and large sailboats along with trips aboard the tall ship Spirit of Dana Point. In addition, kayaks, rowing boats, outboard motor boats and motorized inflatable dinghies are available for member use. Mariner
Sea Scouts are a part of Boy Scouts of America’s Venturing Division and have been based at the Dana Point Harbor for 36 years under the leadership of Jim “Skip” Wehan. Mariners’ youth have the opportunity to sail and live aboard the Spirit of Dana Point tall ship every summer for a nine-day trip at sea. In addition, a $10,000 college scholarship is awarded each year to

Story by Wendy Hunt Photos by William Casper Picture this: it’s a beautiful clear and sunny day, as light ocean breeze cresses your hair and you think “what a perfect day.” You turn and see the ocean horizon, clear skies, birds passing, and horses taking off. The racetrack at Del Mar, CA, offers all that all within your reach. For those of you who love sports or need a little bit of Vegas in Southern California, this is the track for you. For those of you who need some family time, the racetrack offers that experience as well. There is much more to do than just betting on your favorite race horse. For those of you who need a little family time, Del Mar offers you the ability to let your children have fun while you enjoy the horses. Children
have the opportunity to slide down large inflatable water slides, enjoy a private beach and multiple eating options located just in the middle of the all the action. You’re located directly in the center of the track giving you a full 360 degree view from start to finish. For those of you who need a little bit of Vegas, Del Mar offers you the same wagers and pay offs as Vegas. You will not be disappointed with either choice. In between the races take a moment to view the featured horses’ parade around the walking arena and placed in their respected paddock stables. The horses walk with such grace and well aware of the crowd. Seeing them gives the patrons an opportunity to see their favorites in person. As the time approaches the race your enchanted by the sound of the trumpet player beginning to play the infamous song “Call to the Post” and
you know it’s time to gather around the track to get ready for the start of the race. The excitements of watching the horses entering the starting gate and just waiting for that gate to swing open… 3….2…1…and now they’re off! I really enjoyed placing my bet on my favorites and standing with the crowd cheering for my pick just completes this experience. The energy you get from the crowd as the horses come around the last turn as anything can change in that last stretch so don’t take your eyes off of the track. Del Mar offers caters to each patron of all ages. You will not be disappointed with your experience and you will leave with wanting more. With 37 race days to choose from, take the time and come and join us at the races, and remember to “Dress and Impress.”

Lake Shasta Fishing and Vacation Information By Kimberly Sharpe Lake Shasta, nestled beside the snow-capped Mount Shasta in northern California, spans 29,500 acres and boasts 370 miles of shoreline. The lake has diverse fishing opportunities with abundant rainbow trout, brown trout, crappie, kokanee salmon, king salmon, catfish, sturgeon, bluegill, spotted bass, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Considered a true fishermen’s mecca, the lake offers boat fishing and shoreline fishing choices. The largest man-made lake in California, Lake Shasta has a maximum fishing depth of 512 feet. Construction of the lake was completed in 1945 and the lake was officially filled in 1948. Four rivers, known as arms, empty into the lake. The McCloud river, Squaw creek, Sacramento river and Pit river flow into the lake and create its unique large arms which gives Lake Shasta its irregular shoreline appearance. Innumerable mountain streams and spring runoff sites also empty into the lake. Marinas and Boat Launches Lake Shasta’s shoreline is dotted with 11 marinas. Each one offers boat docking and tackle supplies for
anglers. Around the lake fishermen will find seven public boat launches. There is a minimal fee charged to launch a boat from any of the ramps. The ever changing seasonal water level of the lake dictates which boat launches will be open. If the water level is low a few launches may be closed. The Shasta Lake Visitor Information Centers monitor and provide boaters with current boat launch information. Each boat launch features ample parking for vehicles and boat trailers. Courtesy docks are available at the boat launch site to load gear and passengers into the boat. Fishing Locations Fishermen tend to congregate around the area of the arms that empty into the lake to catch fish. The McCloud river arm draws fishermen wishing to catch brown trout, according to the California Game & Fish. The fish spawn in the McCloud river in the fall and begin to enter Shasta lake using the river’s inlet during November and December when their spawning cycle is complete. The Jones Valley provides easy fishing access with paved roads to the Pit river arm where fishermen congre-
gate to catch rainbow trout. The area features beach side camping locations, a full service campground and a public boat launch. Planted Fish Every year the California Department of Fish and Game plants over 30,000 rainbow trout into Lake Shasta. Many of the marinas around the lake also raise rainbow trout in underwater cages until they reach magnum size before releasing them into the lake. Native rainbow trout can be found congreting near the mountain streams that drain into the lake and beside the arms where
they breed. Shore Fishing The Lake Shasta area offers shoreline fishing locations. Along the Sacramento Arm, off Lancaster Drive, fishermen will find easy access to simply walk down to the shore and cast a line. The upper portions of the McCloud arm are also readily accessible on foot with trails that lead down to the shore side. Winter months offer an ideal time for shoreline trout fishing because the fish rise up along the waters surface beside the shoreline in search of food.

The Brig Pilgrim The Pilgrim is a full size replica of the hide brig immortalized by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. in his American classic seafaring novel Two Years Before the Mast. She is a 130-foot “snow brig” hosting fourteen sails, including eight square sails, giving her that distinctively majestic appearance. At sea, the Pilgrim’s volunteer crew mans up to 144 lines in perfect synchronicity to sail her as in bygone times. Coming to Dana Point in 1981, this community icon has served the Ocean Institute well. Having proven to be a most powerful educational tool, thousands of children step aboard the Pilgrim’s decks each school year to participate in one of her many awardwinning living history programs. In the summer, the Pilgrim continues to celebrate her heritage as she heads to sea, with a crew of dedicated

volunteers, to embark on her annual goodwill and sail training voyage. The Spirit of Dana Point The Ocean Institute’s second tall ship, the regal schooner, Spirit of Dana Point, allows students, educators and the general public the opportunity to cast off the dock for exciting sailing adventures that last anywhere from a few hours… to five days! The Spirit of Dana Point is a traditionally built replica of a 1770s privateer employed during the American Revolution. She is classified as a 118-foot’ topsail schooner, with a sparred length of 118 feet and 5,000 square feet of sail. She now serves as an at-sea learning platform for school children of all ages with an emphasis in maritime living history and marine science. In keeping with the tradition of the Ocean Institute’s maritime programs, students are challenged to develop their problem solving and communication skills, as well as their ability to work as a team while developing a sense of leadership and self-esteem. The Curlew Designed by the legendary John G. Alden, Curlew was built in 1926 at Fred F. Pendleton’s shipyard in Wiscasset, Maine. In the 40’s, Curlew was donated to the Merchant Marine Academy where she served as a sail-training vessel and saw coastal submarine patrol duty for the Coast Guard during WWII. A pioneer in the Caribbean charter trade, Curlew gained fame in 1962 by surviving a hurricane-like storm that claimed 144 lives. She later cruised extensively in the Central and South Pacific. In 1976, she was meticulously restored in New Zealand and then
sailed to Hawaii where she was engaged in inter-island charters. Curlew is a classic wooden boat. Her strong and graceful hull is sheathed in long leaf yellow pine over sturdy frames of white oak. Fully inspected and certified by the Coast Guard, Curlew is now permanently berthed in Dana Point Harbor at the Dana Wharf Sportfishing docks. Californian This regal schooner, is owned and operated by the San Diego Maritime Museum. The Californian is a recreation of the 1849 Campbell-class Revenue Marine Cutter C.W. Lawrence. She is a 145’ twomasted square topsail schooner. The Californian offers educational sailing programs for youth and sail training opportunities for volunteers. The ship has been designated as the official tallship ambassador for the state of California and has a broad history having sailed to ports in Hawaii, Canada, and Mexico. Bill of Rights This classic gaff topsail schooner was built in South Bristol, Maine by the Harvey Gamage Shipyard, a famous old-school New England yard. Built in 1971, the Bill of Rights sailed from Norfolk, Virginia, to join the Los Angeles Maritime Institute “TopSail” Youth Programs in March of 1998. Now, after having undergone considerable restoration, The Bill of Rights at 136’ long is currently located in Channel Islands Harbor and is operated by Steven Taylor. “Zoofari State Faire” Celebrates 21st Fundraiser

Photos by Ann Chatillon The Friends of Santa Ana Zoo (FOSAZ), a non-profit organization, hosted the 21st annual Zoofari fundraising black-tie gala for over 300 guests with a Victorian Faire theme entitled “Zoofari State Faire.” Zoofari takes place at one of the most inspiring venues in Orange County, the Santa Ana Zoo. Guests began the night being greeted by various animals and their docent “handlers”. A three banded armadillo, a ball python, along with Danny the pony and Bindi the binturong welcomed everyone as they entered the Santa Ana Zoo. Free valet parking was sponsored by Villa Ford along with a hosted bar, appetizers and then a gourmet dinner prepared by Parties by Panache were also enjoyed. SoCal PBS Anchor Ed Arnold was the emcee for the evening with Glen Fladeboe as auctioneer for the live auction, assisted by FOSAZ Board Member Debbie Newmeyer. Special honorees this year were Debbie Friedman and Dan Dunshee and Lori and Bobby Babcock. They received awards as they have been instrumental in leading the Board over the recent years bringing the Santa Ana Zoo’s special events to the next level; all to help the animals and the people who visit the Zoo. The event netted over $75,000 and this year they raised over $30,000 just in the silent auction area alone while the live auction netted over $25,000. The most exciting live auction bids were the final Live Auction item – it was a straight donation where the Santa Ana Zoo will be bringing a Silver Langur to the Zoo. Almost everyone in the audience participated raising the amount needed, $12,000; it will fund a “howdy cage” in addition to the exhibit. Other live auction items were: two iPad Mini’s donated by Board Member Howard Hall; a Halloween Party for 20 with dinner and drinks won by Board Member Kristeen Stolo, 8 days/7nights in a one bedroom villa at the Cancun Resort in Vegas donated by Board Member Curtis Farrell, a Prada red Saffiano leather tote handbag donated by Board Member Patty McClendon which was stuffed with over $800 and 100 California “Scratchers” won by Board Member Monica Kim, 5 days/4 nights at the St. Regis in Vancouver with airfare from Alaska Airlines won by Board Member Allen Goh, and the rare-behind-the-scenes “Blue Ribbon Tour” experience was sold 4 times giving folks a private tour of the zoo along with lunch. Attendees also enjoyed decorations by R.W.B. Party Rentals and dancing to the dynamic tunes of the “Groove Factory”. Zoofari is chaired by Cathi Decker and sponsored by FOSAZ, a non-profit organization which has helped support and improve the Zoo for over 31 years. This year, Zoofari is raising funds for the rides, upgrading the train and paying off the loan for the Carrousel along with starting funds for the Fifty Monkey Ferris Wheel as well as building “howdy cage” and exhibit space for the Silver Langur. Established in 1952, the Santa Ana Zoo is Orange County’s only AZA accredited Zoo and is recognized as signifying excellence and commitment to animal care and conservation. It is also home to more than 150 animals, including 50 of the most interesting and engaging monkeys and several endangered species. Deep-Sea Fishing in Southern California for Beginners By Sylvia Cochran A California vacation would be incomplete without a few deep-sea fishing trips. If you are following in the footsteps of your fishing buddies, there are at least three facts they forgot to tell you. What should you know about Southern California deep-sea charters before setting foot on deck? Deep-Sea Fishing Trips Follow Peak Seasons As noted by Sportfish San Diego, deep-sea charters usually target fish species by following a calendar denoting seasonal peaks. For example, if you have your heart set on yellowfin tuna, schedule your California vacation between the months of July and October. Conversely, if big eye tuna is your game, then August and September are the months that charter boat operators predict greatest success. Deep-sea Fishing in Southern California Is Regulated The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) provides up-to-date information on open, closed, and partially closed fisheries. Check the listing frequently, as ocean conditions or dips in the fish populations may lead to early fishery closures. Moreover, fishing for some species from shore is governed by rules
that greatly differentiate from regulations applying to deep-sea charters. Case in point are rockfish, which may be caught by divers and shore anglers year-round, but may only be caught by boat anglers between March 1 and December 31. The changing rules, bag limits, tackle restrictions, and depth constraints are the reasons why tourists going on deep-sea fishing trips prefer to use the services of deep-sea charters. Not All Deep-sea Charters Operate and Cost the Same - Newport Landing (309 Palm St. #A in Balboa, CA 92661; 949-675-0550) will charge you extra if the cost of marine diesel goes above the $4 per gallon mark. Rod rentals start at $12.50, and a half-day deep-sea fishing charter costs $41.50 for anyone 13 and older; the cost is $34 for anyone 12 and under. - Davey’s Locker (400 Main St. in Newport Beach, CA 92661; 949673-1434) offers an adult package price for half-day charters, which includes not only the $46.50 ticket
price, but also a rod rental, one-day fishing license, and tackle. The company charges extra for onboard fish cleaning. - Marina del Rey Sportfishing (Dock 52 Fiji Way in Marina del Rey, CA 90292; 310-822-3625) specializes in twilight charters. These deep-sea fishing trips last from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and cost $39 for each adult. In this case, adult pricing also applies to youngsters 12 and older. Those under
the age of 12 pay $25. - Dana Wharf (34675 Golden Lantern in Dana Point, CA 92629; 949-496-5794) offers a special deal for Tuesday anglers: 50 percent off ticket prices. Good on half-day and three-quarter-day trips, this yearround promotion makes it affordable to go deep-sea fishing if $44 or $59 respectively for an adult ticket is a bit steep. Youngsters over the age of 14 pay the adult ticket cost.
Turn Good Lunchboxes into Great Lunchboxes While moms want to make sure their kids eat a healthier lunch at school, it’s not always easy packing lunches that are good for them. Food and lifestyle expert Evette Rios has five easy tips to help families pack a healthier lunch, and turn a good lunchbox into a great lunchbox: Subtract the fat. Remove unnecessary fat with fat-free deli meats – your kids won’t know the difference. Avoid temptation with snacks. Children who eat a poor quality breakfast or lunch may give in to temptation, so offer healthier snacks like nuts and dried fruit, or sneak 20 percent of your kid’s daily fiber into the lunchbox by packing a Nature Valley granola bar or Fiber One bar. It’s not juice if it’s not 100 percent. If you are going to serve juice make sure its 100 percent fruit juice. Don’t be afraid to give them a sweet treat. Here are the top California surfing beaches where you can surf or watch surfers ride the waves. Manhattan Beach: Manhattan is one of three beach communities in Los Angeles consisting of Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Hermosa Beach. It is just three miles from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and is a popular surfing site for pop culture crowds. Capistrano Beach: Capistrano Beach is great beach with hometown flare. It is one of those great beaches where everyone seems to know each other, and there are those close knit small towns feel. This beach is one of the places to catch relatively mild and gentle surf. Redondo Breakwater: Surfing is a great pastime at Redondo Beach, where the Breakwater waves move in from the left side at over 6 feet and can hold up to 20 feet. It has sandy bottom with difficult surfing level. You are warned that a novice surfer will not make it; you must be advanced in your arts to ride the breakwater waves here. It is a great location for advanced surfers for its big waves. International Surf Festivals are held here
Malibu Point:Malibu is among the Southern California Surf Spots. It isone of the world’s most famous long, slow point breaks, with strong reef waves often coming from the right side of surfing. Great for intermediate to skilled surfer. Trestles: located in a hidden area of San Clemente, Trestles is known for its reef breaks coming from the right. The bottom is filled with rocky reef so you are warned to be at least intermediate surfer to attend. It can have a busy crowd who enjoy the renowned California break produced here. It is known in Orange County for its consistent and great surf. The fact that it is in a hidden location makes it extra special for locals to enjoy it.
Santa Monica Chevron Reef : Chevron Reef is Los Angeles County’s first artificial reef breaks created by oil firm Chevron and the Surfrider Foundation in a beach erosion settlement. It is situated just off the coast of Marina Del Rey, close to LAX. Great wave breaks at four feet and can hold to 15 feet or more in all directions. Seal Beach Pier: Seal Beach is among the top Long Beach Southern California Surf spots. It has pier breaks surrounded by sandbar reef. Its rivermouth wave comes from the right and the left to break in any type of conditions, especially when in a south swell. It is great for intermediate surfer.

Fishing with Your Kids The Best Way to Have an Enjoyable Experience Fishing By Carl Kolchak Fishing with your kids should be a fun family experience, but it often can turn into a tedious chore. Tangled lines, a lack of action, and the suggestion of going fishing with your kids can turn from excited looks into bored faces in a hurry. Trying to keep up, especially if you have more than two children, can run a parent ragged, as he or she tries to make sure lines are in the water and everybody is having a good time. Here are some tips to make sure that fishing with your kids is a worthwhile and enjoyable adventure. First and foremost, you need to catch fish. Nothing creates the potential for boredom more than a fishing pole that just sits there with no fish biting! Pretty soon the children are wondering why they are there to begin with and fishing with your kids goes from a great idea to a very bad one in a matter of a few minutes. There are many things you can do to increase your odds of catching fish, giving the kids the excitement that will keep their interest. Go fishing with the kids in the early morning or late afternoon; these are the peak times for most species of fish to bite. During the summer, after supper is the optimal time to gather the equipment and head to the local fishing spot. If the kids are too young to bait their own hooks and cast out, you need to forget about doing any fishing yourself and concentrate on their needs. It’s no fun for a kid to stand around and watch you fish. Proper equipment is crucial to success when fishing with your kids. Do not bother with those “kiddie” poles that cannot stand up to the rigors of actual fishing. An inexpensive spinning reel and rod will do the trick; you aren’t going after world records, you simply want to catch fish. A spinning reel is the easiest type for a youngster to learn to cast with. If they are old enough to cast, make sure you put them in a spot way from trees and brush that will snag your child’s line and hook. Find an open area along the river bank or shore of the pond. Nothing is more frustrating while fishing than having to break your line, tie another hook on, rebait it and cast again, only to get caught up in the same branch or log! If you are fishing with your kids at a small pond, there are two species of fish that you can usually targetbullheads and pumpkinseeds. All you need for bait are night crawlers, which Page 22
you can catch yourself on any damp spring or early summer evening. Get the children involved in this, by letting them go out and catch them for themselves. All they need is a flashlight and a bit of coaching. Catching the worms will be almost as much fun as catching the fish. If you need to buy your bait, many convenience stores actually sell worms during the fishing season. Night crawlers can be kept in a container in your refrigerator for weeks; only be sure that everyone knows what is in that container to avoid unwanted surprises. Once you are at the pond, space the kids out so they will have their own areas to fish and avoid tangling their lines. You do not need to use floats or bobs. Have a number four snelled hook tied to the line with a pair of split shots secured about eighteen inches up from the hook. A snelled hook is a hook that comes already attached to a short piece of monofilament with a loop tied at the end. You can tie it right to your line; the number of the hook, in this case a number four, is an indicator of the hook’s size. The split shot will give you or your child added weight on the line, allowing the line to be cast further. Hook the night crawler on and cast out. Place a forked stick into the ground and lean the pole against it. When the fish bite, your child will see the line start to move. It will either begin to go out as the fish runs with the bait or there will be a distinct jerking motion that your child can

easily detect as the end of the rod as it snaps back and forth. Now is when you have your child pick up the rod and try to set the hook. Teach them not to simply reel the line in, but to give the line a good, quick yank in an attempt to hook the fish. They will be able to tell in an instant if the fish is on by the tension and feel of the line. Have them reel in, but not too fast, always being sure not to let the line go slack. Pumpkinseeds, a common pond dweller, are small in size, but their streamlined shape allows them to put up a great fight for their stature. They will zigzag to and fro in the water until your child can land them. They have sharp spines on their back fins that need to be avoided. It is important for your child to learn how to properly handle a fish once it has been caught, so as to be able to release it unharmed. Show your child how to hold the fish and remove the hook, teaching them not to be afraid of doing this. Until your child is old enough to handle this alone, you will be doing the removing, as well as putting on the worm and casting out. Bullhead will bite one right after another on a good day, and they can keep you running from child to child as they land them or lose them. Let your child either catch the fish or be responsible for it getting away, as this will help them learn what they did right or wrong. They will get a feel for when the fish are biting, when to set the hook, and how fast to reel in. Eventually, they will be able to hold the pole and
know when the fish are biting, without having to lean it against the stick. If you are going to be fishing with your kids at a river, add more split shots so you can cast out further. Rivers are more unpredictable in that there are many more species of fish that can be caught; trout, bass, white and yellow perch, suckers, pumpkinseed, and carp are commonly caught on night crawlers here in the Northeast. The potential is there for your kid to hook some decent sized fish; avoid the temptation to jump in and land the “big one”. Fishing with your kids at a river can be made even more fun by assigning each species of fish a point value. The more desirable the fish, such as a bass or trout, the higher number it is assigned. Have your kids keep track of how many points they have accumulated, with some sort of reward or prize going to the winner. Teach them to be sure to leave the pond shore or riverbank the way they found it, litter and garbage free. If the fish are not biting, a pair of binoculars can come in handy as there is bound to be something of interest around the water, whether it’s a kingfisher, a mallard, or a muskrat. Fishing with your kids can be great fun, enhanced by their learning to appreciate the outdoors and actually catching fish. Put yourself and your children in a situation where they have the best chance to succeed, and you and they will look forward to spending this time together long after they have grown up!

The most accurate way to determine whether your lawn needs water is to use a knife to cut a wedge of soil (through the turf) about four inches deep and feel the soil. Ideally, it should be moist, not powder dry nor soggy and wet. “Signs of typical wear and tear on yards this time of year are amplified when lawns are stressed,” said Ben Hamza, Ph.D., director of technical operations at TruGreen. “Brown spots on lawns may not always be from lack of water or nutrients, but instead from lawn-feeding insects that can mimic drought damage on select grass types. Homeowners need to have a clear understanding of the source of the yard problem to effectively resolve.” How to Water Your Lawn Established lawns should be watered deeply, but infrequently. Deep
watering once a week encourages deeper root growth, while frequent, shallow watering produces a limited root system. When watering, make sure you moisten the top three to four inches of soil, which covers the root zone. Although watering frequency depends on the type of grass, your soil, and the weather, most grasses require about one inch of water each week for healthy growth. Let Mother Nature do as much of the watering for you as possible. The best time to water is in the morning and in non-windy conditions. This conserves water and allows grass to dry before evening. Grass that remains wet for long periods of time is more susceptible to disease development. Watering in the afternoon is the worst for water conservation. Up to half the water can evaporate in the air or on the ground during the hot part of the day. If you’re using a movable sprinkler, let it run in one spot just until the water
begins to run off the surface, then move to a different area of the lawn. Monitor your underground irrigation or sprinkler system to be sure that you moisten the lawn’s entire root zone without over-watering any sections. To help ensure uniformity, place a one-inch deep, empty food can in the middle of lawn area to measure depth of water collected after each watering cycle. Beware of the Pitfalls of Public Wi-Fi By Jason Alderman Ever notice how many people walk down the street completely engrossed in their smartphones and tablets? I fully expect to see one of them to walk into a light post one day. Although it’s great having access to email, social networking and online shopping anywhere, anytime, such convenience comes with a certain amount of risk, according to Jennifer Fischer, Head of Americas Payment System Security, Visa Inc. “Unless you’re hyper-vigilant about using secure networks and hack-proof passwords, someone sitting at the next table – or halfway around the world – could be watching your every move online and stealing valuable personal and financial information right off your device,” says Fischer. “There are two primary potential dangers with Wi-Fi,” notes Fischer. “The first is using an unsecured network – as many public hotspots are. With a little know-how and the right tools, cybercriminals could easily eavesdrop on your online activity. “The second hazard is phony wireless networks that impersonate legitimate Wi-Fi hot spots. You think you’re logged onto a trusted network, but instead a cybercriminal has hijacked your session and can see all
the private information you access or input.” When using public Wi-Fi networks, always follow these safety precautions: • Change default settings on your laptop, smartphone or tablet to require that you must manually select a particular Wi-Fi network, rather than automatically accepting the strongest available signal. • Avoid any network connections your device lists as “unsecured” (look for the “lock” icon). But if you must log on to a public network, avoid websites that require log-ins and passwords – e.g., bank accounts or email. • Ask for the exact name of the establishment’s hot spot address – don’t be fooled by lookalikes. • Only send personal data via Wi-Fi to encrypted websites (those whose addresses begin with “https” and display a lock icon). To be safe, you may want to avoid conducting financial transactions on public Wi-Fi altogether; instead, use your secure home network. • Consider using a third-party virtual private network (VPN) product to encrypt your Internet traffic. • Regularly update virus and spyware protection software, make sure firewalls are on, and load operating system updates as soon as they

Use a mixture of letters, numbers and symbols and avoid common words and phrases. Security experts recommend using at least 12 characters instead of the minimum eight characters commonly required. Cybercrime is a booming business. According to the 2012 Norton Cybercrime Report, its global price tag topped $388 billion last year, more than the global black market in marijuana, cocaine and heroin combined. It impacts individuals, small and large businesses and governments alike. On October 2, 2013, Visa Inc. is hosting its fifth Global Security Summit in Washington, D.C. “We’re bringing together experts from the worlds of government, law enforcement, technology, finance, retail commerce and academia to explore how industry
and government can collaborate to address cyber security,” says Fischer. “Those interested in attending can register for free at www.visasecuritysummit.com.” Being able to access the Internet anywhere anytime can be a great convenience and time-saver.
