TAX PLANNING STRATEGIES FOR 2016 FROM KIM COYLE CPA
Dear Client; As the end of the year approaches, it’s a good time to think of planning strategies that will help lowering your taxes for 2016. My goal is for you to leverage your tax deductions and credit to the fullest extent. I want to briefly discuss five different strategies that can be powerful tools in lowering your tax bill. And the really great part is that each of these strategies is easy to understand and implement. Here are the strategies: 1. Prepay Expenses The IRS allows cash-basis taxpayers to prepay and deduct qualifying expenses up to 12 months in advance (through December 2017) without challenge, adjustment, or change by the IRS. For a cash-basis taxpayer, qualifying expenses include lease payment on business vehicles, rent payments on offices and machinery, and business and malpractice insurance premiums. This is a great way to pump up your 2016 deductions with expenses you will eventually pay anyway. 2. Stop Billing Customers and Patients An easy strategy for reducing your taxable income for this year is to stop billing your customers until December 31, 2016. Customers, patients, and insurance companies generally don’t pay until billed. Not billing customers and patients is a time-tested tax planning strategy that business owner have used successfully for years. 3. Buy Office Equipment With Section 179, you can write off up to $500,000 of office equipment in 2016. Qualifying Section 179 purchases include new and used personal property such as equipment, computers, desks, chairs, and certain qualifying vehicles. To qualify for Section 179, you need to both buy the items and put them in business service on or before midnight December 31, 2016. 4. Use Your Credit Cards If you are a sole proprietor, the day you charge a purchase to your business or personal credit card is the day the expense is deductible, Therefore, as a proprietor, consider using your credit cards to buy office supplies and other business necessities. If you operate your business as a corporation, and if the corporation has a credit card in the corporate name, the same rule applies: the date of charge is the date of deduction for the corporation. But if you operate your business as a corporation and you are the personal owner of the credit card, the corporation must reimburse you if you want the corporation to realize the tax deduction, and that happens on the date of reimbursement. Thus, submit your expense report and have your corporation make its reimbursements to you before midnight on December 31. 5. Don’t Assume You Are Taking Too Many Deductions Make sure your record all of your rightful deductions for 2016, because if your business deductions exceed your business income, you have a tax loss for the year. After a few modifications to the loss, tax law calls this a “net operating loss,” or an NOL. The good news is that tax law allows you to carry back the NOL for two years and get instant refunds from taxes previously paid. If, after going back for two years, you still have unused losses, you can carry them forward for up to 20 years. In other words, you have a 22-year window during which you can realize the benefits of your deductions. So always document your expenses in order to get your rightful deductions. 6 small steps to improve your health in a big way
You want to be healthier, right? But try as you might, it always seems like something’s standing in your way. Time and money are two of the largest obstacles, and you may think it’s impossible to improve your health without a significant time or financial investment. The good news is, however, that’s not true. Even the smallest changes can have a big impact on your health, and you can start improving your wellness today with these six simple steps. 1. Take a stand while so many others are having a seat. Did you know the average person sits about 13 hours a day? Whether eating, working, driving or relaxing, that’s a lot of sitting. Stand up for your health by resolving to get up at least once an hour. Walk to the bathroom, the water fountain or to ask your question in person instead of via email - you’ll be healthier for it. 2. Run in place....any place. Effective exercise can happen without the gym membership. Blue Cross and Blue Shield surprised customers at one candy store by asking them to pay for their sweets with physical activity. Running in place, burpees, jumping jacks and shadow boxing you can watch customers do it all in an entertaining video. And remember that just 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week can dramatically reduce your own risk of diabetes. 3. Floss for your heart. You brush your teeth twice a day, but how often do you floss? If you’re like 80 percent of surveyed adults, you don’t, and that can increase your risk of heart disease. A good oral hygiene habit includes flossing, so add this simple task to your regimen every day. 4. Don’t underestimate the importance of a good nap. Getting a good night’s sleep helps you function better during the day, but it can also reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes. But what do you do on those days when getting a good night’s sleep isn’t possible? Take a nap even a 30-minute nap can leave you
feeling rested and ultimately support your health. 5. Smallersize your plates. Over the last 20 years the average portion size has doubled and, not surprisingly, 65 percent of Americans are now classified as obese. Reversing this trend starts with reversing the portion size. To take smaller portions, start using smaller plates. Your brain will feel as though you have still taken a full plate of food but you’ll consume fewer calories. 6. Show the world your most confident pose. Stress is often a part of daily life. Whether it’s stress caused by work, home or financial reasons, this stress can also have a negative impact on your health by raising your blood pressure and weakening your immune system. Combat stress by power posing to grow your confidence. Just two minutes of this technique can increase your confidence by 20 percent. Managing your health takes commitment, but the job isn’t too big for anyone. It starts with making smart, healthy decisions every single day, including the tips above. Confidence-boosting tips for fitness class first-timers You’ve joined a health club and now you’re curious about fitness classes. You’re almost ready to sign up for an indoor cycle, yoga or strength-training class, but something stops you. You feel nervous and uncomfortable and decide to wait. Group fitness classes are a fantastic way to exercise because you’re guided by an expert, plus the energy of the group keeps you motivated. However, because it’s something new that puts people outside their comfort zone, it’s common to feel apprehensive in the beginning. To help you gain confidence to try any type of group exercise class, consider these tips from three health club members. Comfort over style. “Trust me, no one cares what you’re wearing,” says Deb Kampe, a member at Life Time, which operates 122 destinations across the United States and in Canada. “If you want to wear gym shorts and a T-shirt, do it. Head-totoe athleisure? Do it. A tutu? Do it. Just make sure you’re comfortable and safe. Don’t spend a fortune on the latest fitness clothing trends or labels. Expensive does not equal better.” Don’t be self-conscious. “It’s easy to assume everyone in class is fit, knows all the moves and is judging you. No one cares,” Kampe says. “Once the music starts and the instructor begins, all eyes are up front taking direction and being lifted into the moment.” Everyone was a newbie. “Everyone was a first-timer at some point, so they know how it feels,” says Dustin
Meriwether, member at Life Time. “They’re not going to judge you for it, and many - hopefully all - will be willing to answer any questions and help in any other way.” Instructors want to assist. “All instructors - and other members - want to help you,” says Kelby Mezzenga, member at Life Time. “So just walk in and let the instructor know you are new or have a question. That welcoming feeling takes the edge off and chances are, you’ll have met a new friend.” Keep an open mind. “Group fitness classes are designed to challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone. You may be unfamiliar with the equipment you’ll use or how hard it might be, but I guarantee you will feel the burn,” Mezzenga says. Listen to your body. “You know your body best,” says Meriwether. “If something doesn’t feel right or if you know you have problems with something, modify the workout correspondingly. People do that all the time and many instructors
are good about suggesting such modifications.” Give it 100 percent. “You get out what you put in,” Meriwether says. “If you put in minimal effort, you can expect minimal results. But if you give it your all, you can expect some pretty fantastic fitness changes.” Bring water. Hydration is important, but you don’t need to worry about anything else. “Life Time has everything you’ll need for any class, from yoga mats to towels,” says Mezzenga. Celebrate victories “During the cool-down and stretching segment of class, take a moment to celebrate your victory,” says Kampe. “Look around, everyone no matter what their age and ability will beseriously sweaty, all there with you sharing the same endorphins. A four-point plan for joint health Keep on cruising with a regular maintenance schedule for your joints Whether it’s a brand-new Bentley or a classic 1970 Mustang, most people have a car they dream about. NEW DOG LAWS FOR 2017 ARE THE HOT TOPIC IN RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA The whole town is talking about the strong new animal control laws that the City Council of the City of Rancho Santa Margarita unanimously enacted at the end of 2016.Every owner of any kind of animal that lives in or near the City of Rancho Santa Margarita or Mission Viejo will want to become familiar with these comprehensive new regulations which cover a vast array of animal activities. The full text of the sweeping new ordinances was published in the (12/23/16) edition of the Ladera Ranch News. Here are some of the Highlights of the new animal regulations that now apply to you and your animal; FAILURE TO PICK UP ANIMAL WASTE COSTS YOU FINES OF $300 TO $500 EACH TIME That’s right! Walking your dog may now mean bringing along a plastic bag and shovel to pick up after it. Animal control officers have sweeping authority to ticket you for a first offense of Three Hundred dollars (No kidding!) and repeated offenses up to $five hundred and fifty dollars each. YOU CAN’T OWN FIVE OR MORE CATS OR DOGS WITHOUT A KENNEL LICENSE A kennel license is not easy to get. You probably can’t just plop down the $250 fee, you will need a premises inspection, which may include concrete, walled or commercially fenced enclosure, with drainage, sanitation system, fly control, separate water supply. ALL DOGS MUST BE VACCINATED, LICENSED AND WEAR TAGS OR BE IMPOUNDED The cities have banded together to require licenses in every part of the greater South Orange County area serviced by the Mission Viejo Animal Services, which includes nearly all of Mission Viejo, Ladera Ranch, Coto de Caza and Rancho Santa Margarita. YOU CAN’T KEEP DANGEROUS DOGS WITHOUT MILLION DOLLAR INSURANCE POLICY If your dog has bitten someone, or even attempted to bite or injure anyone who is on public property, the animal may be declared a dangerous animal requiring you to furnish the city with proof of a one-million-dollar insurance policy. Dangerous dogs can be impounded by animal control officials and destroyed . HUNDREDS OF ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS ARE INCLUDED IN THESE NEW REGULATIONS Anyone who owns a cat or dog should become aware of the new laws. The newspaper spoke to Bradley J. McGirr, former Rancho Santa Margarita Mayor and current Councilmember, who said:” The changes to our animal care ordinances, were modified to comply with what Mission Viejo’s animal care ordinance structure
now that we will be joining with their no kill shelter since the first of the year. Rather than following the loose protocols of the County of Orange, our modified ordinances with include more detail regarding adoption events and other animal care and control.” Reporters for the Coto de Caza News also spoke with former Rancho Santa Margarita City Planning Commissioner April Josephson, a prominent animal lover and Executive Director of The Pet Adoption Center of Orange County in Lake Forest, and we asked her Why the city felt the need for these strong changes? “From my understanding”, she said “the whole basis for the change is that we had to adopt Mission Viejo ordinances exactly, to move our city’s services to Mission Viejo Animal Services, and since Mission Viejo is making these changes, Rancho Santa Margarita has to make them first to be allowed to join Mission Viejo jurisdiction, effective January 1, 2017. The main differences relate to the fact that they are taking on the Mission Viejo’s ordinances, which are more restrictive than the county’s in a number of areas. The one area where they are more lenient is that Mission Viejo allows for four dogs and four cats per household, and the county only allows for three. However, Rancho Santa Margarita is a planned community, where Homeowners Associations’ Regulations generally restrict the number of dogs and cats to less anyway. The city moved to join with Mission Viejo primarily because they were touting their no-kill shelter. In reality, that is not what will affect Rancho Santa Margarita most. Rancho Santa Margarita has very few animals that are actually taken into the shelter. In fact as of yesterday and today, when I checked, Rancho Santa Margarita had zero pets at our current animal shelter, the Orange County shelter. Rancho Santa Margarita is now being subject to greater restrictions regarding pet-related businesses, except that veterinary clinics are exempt from those restrictions. I am hopeful that the cities will work together to revise any business regulations that may have an unintended impact on Rancho Santa Margarita pet-related businesses. “The biggest positive impact that I expect from the move to Mission Viejo jurisdiction is the addition of 24/7 animal control services. Response time should be faster, as should dead animal pick-up, which has been a repeated complaint from Dove Canyon and other area homeowners,” said Josephson.

80’s To the Max Party Hosted by Ducks for orangewood fundraiser Photos by Ann Chatillon If you loved the 80’s, then this was the event to be at as it was a totally crazy 80’s night at the Sport Chalet in the Crate and Barrel wing of South Coast Plaza. With around 420 guests all in outrageous 80’s themed outfits, fans, supporters and guests celebrated the 2016 Anaheim Ducks Center Ice Party presented by the Klein Family which supports Orangewood Foundation. With the theme “80’s to the Max, Like Totally!” the room was filled with folks dressed in their craziest 80’s garb – leg warmers, big hair, tie-dyed shirts and of course those DUCK players! They were dressed in neon Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses (similar to the hit 80s show, Magnum PI). It was fun as they mingled with the crowd, joined guests at the arcade games and the pool table, and even performed a rendition of the theme song from the movie Ghostbusters. Guests enjoyed mall food and court style food, as the passed around trays of soft pretzels with beer cheese, corn dogs and tater tots, to-go cartons of Chinese food. The musical entertainment was a live performance by 80s cover band The Spazmatics, who thrilled the crowd with their high school nerd costumes and silly antics which accompanied their musical covers of classic 80s hits like “Wake Me Up Before You Go” by Wham. An extensive variety of silent auction items were available for guests to bid on. There were also four live auction items, including the opportunity to spend an hour with the iconic Stanley Cup trophy. Title sponsor Bill Klein placed the highest bid on this item and then announced he would share the hour with the students at Orangewood’s charter high school, Samueli Academy. Other live auction items that were up for grabs were a New Year’s Eve package for 14 in a luxury suite at the Honda Center watching the Ducks/Flyers game along with a one night stay at an Island Corner Suite for 2 and a dinner party for 4 at the Oak Grill; for the Ultimate sports fan – someone picked up 2 glass seats for a Ducks game plus LA Rams and Angel tickets and a 20 person suite at Dodger Stadium to use in 2017; there was also the ultimate Party Like a Rock Star package that included Luxury accommodations for 2 for the 2017 NHL All Star weekend which included an signed All-Star Jersey, parties, meet and greets with hotel accommodations. Opportunity items were just as popular – four lucky fans walked away with either a John Gibson Autographed Canvas, Ryan Kesler Autographed Jersey, Corey Perry Autographed Game stick (used of course!) and Cam Flower Autographed Canvas. Speakers during the brief program included Ducks Rinkside Reporter Kent French, Ducks co-owner and long-time Orangewood supporter Susan Samueli (founding chair of the Orangewood’s 44 Women for Orangewood auxiliary and also an Orangewood board member), and Orangewood CEO Chris Simonsen. Founded in 1981, Orangewood Foundation is one of the leading providers of services to foster and community youth. Their mission is to prepare foster and community youth to reach their greatest potential. Last year they helped almost 2,000 youth teens with programs that prepare them to make a successful transition from the foster care system to independent adulthood. Can You Stand Still? Pageant of the Masters Casting Call 2017 Ever wonder what it would be like to step into a famous piece of art? If you can stand still for 90 seconds, you could experience just that by volunteering for the renowned Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach - “where art comes to life!” In preparation of the 2017 show, The Grand Tour, the Pageant is looking for men, women and children to volunteer. People of all sizes and ages are needed to be cast members in the world’s most famous presentation of tableaux vivants. Casting call will be held at the Irvine Bowl Park (650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, CA) during the following times: Friday, January 6 from 7 – 9pm Saturday, January 7 from 7 - 9pm Sunday, January 8 from 2 - 5pm Next summer’s performances of the Pageant of the Masters will run nightly at 8:30pm from July 7 to August 31, 2017. Prospective volunteers will be measured and photographed, enjoy refreshments and meet the behind-the-scenes Pageant staff. No theater experience is necessary. The only requirement is the ability to stand still and have fun. “Over 500 volunteers, both onstage and behind-the-scenes,
are needed to put on the show,” said Pageant Director Diane Challis Davy. “Everyone has a great time backstage and many return year after year to take part in this one-ofa-kind performance. The Pageant just simply wouldn’t be possible without our volunteers!” Pageant volunteers are also needed for positions in the wardrobe, make up, and headdress departments, as well as cast area coordinators and refreshment servers, among other positions. Volunteering for the Pageant is a great way to spend your summer and it is common to have several Volunteers help bring to life the Pageant of the Masters re-creation generations of the same family of Sir Edwin Landseer’s painting “ Windsor Castle in Modern Times.” volunteering for different aspects of the show. Additionally, by volunteering for the Pageant, students can earn credit towards community service requirements. Recipe created by The Chef Next Door on behalf of Milk Means More Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Servings: 4 3/4 cup buckwheat flour 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 1 3/4 cups lactose-free, 2 percent milk 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 2 cups fresh blueberries, plus additional for topping (optional) syrup (optional) In large bowl, whisk together flours, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In small bowl, beat eggs then add milk, oil and vanilla; mix well. Stir wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix to combine. Heat griddle or large skillet over medium heat. Using 1/4 measuring cup, pour batter onto griddle. Gently place several blueberries all over surface of pancakes. Flip pancakes when bubbles start to form around edges and bottoms are golden brown. Cook on other side until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Remove to plate and cover to keep warm. Top pancakes with additional blueberries and syrup before serving, if desired.

Stir in oats. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer oats, stirring occasionally, 4 minutes. Remove oats from heat and place lid on saucepan. Set aside. In nonstick skillet over medium heat, saute onion in olive oil until soft, about 4 minutes. Stir canned tomatoes with green chilies and chipotle chili powder into onions to combine. Continue to heat salsa to boil, about 1 minute. Make two wells in middle of tomato salsa. Crack eggs into wells. Season eggs with salt and pepper, to taste. Cover skillet and poach eggs in salsa to desired doneness; about 3-4 minutes. Divide oats evenly between two bowls. Spoon eggs and salsa over oats. Serve immediately with cheddar cheese.

Recipe created by Rachel Cooks on behalf of Milk Means More Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 35 minutes Servings: 8 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 large clove garlic, minced 12 ounces frozen spinach, thawed and water pressed out 12 large eggs 1/4 cup skim milk 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves 3/4 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 cup minced fresh basil 1/2 cup shredded, part-skim mozzarella cheese Heat oven to 325 F. In oven-safe skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and cook 2 minutes, or until fragrant. Once garlic is fragrant, add spinach; break up to incorporate and heat. In medium bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, pepper, oregano, ricotta, Parmesan and basil. Add egg mixture to skillet, reduce heat to low and cook 1 minute, stirring gently. Move to oven and bake 25-30 minutes, or until eggs are almost completely set. Carefully remove from oven and add mozzarella. Return to oven and bake until mozzarella is melted, about 5 minutes. May be served hot, at room temperature or cold.
