Sweetheart Dance at the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge By Andy Costello What could be nicer for Valentine’s Day than to take your partner to the Sweetheart Dance at the Mission Viejo, Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge? One hundred twelve seniors attended the dinner dance sponsored by the Elks Lodge in cooperation with the Norman Murray Senior Center. Red Hearts and roses valentines adorned the Lodge room walls and the tables were set in a red and white valentine theme. Music was provided by the talented Wayne Pulcini who kept the dance floor filled throughout the event. Dinner was served and diners enjoyed a mixed green salad with raspberry vinaigrette dressing, Chicken Cordon Blue or Vegetarian Lasagna, and sweetheart cake for desert, courtesy of Elks kitchen cooks and volunteer servers: Dennis Boelts, Laura Lumley, Basia bills, Judy Klinger, and Vicky Long. Helping out was Elks Exalted Ruler Mike Long and Leading Knight Mike Klinger taking photos. The event was chaired

by Elks Past Exalted Ruler Gloria R. LeCouvre. On hand from the Murray Senior Center was Jan Brown Senior Community Services Leader. Four gift baskets were raffled-off. Winners were Julie Hill, Candis Davis, Irene Romero PER, and Vincent Marotto. The Sweetheart Dinner Dance is one of two such events held for the seniors of the Saddleback Valley each year, as part of the Elks Community Involvement Program. The next Senior Dance will be in October. The Mission Viejo/Saddleback Valley Elks Lodge #2444 is celebrating 49 years of service to Saddleback Valley Communities. It is one of 10 lodges in the Orange Coast District of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) whose headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. The BPOE is a charitable organization with a 150 year history of giving. “Elks Care Elks Share” For information regarding Elks programs or membership, call 949 830-3557.

Ladera Ranch News is an independent weekly newspaper published every Friday. We are not owned or operated by any of the big daily newspapers. The views and opinions expressed are those of the publisher and not any organization. No reproduction, in whole or in part is permitted without the express written permission of Ladera Ranch News. Legal Advertising: The Ladera Ranch News was adjudicated by the Orange County Superior Court as a newspaper of general circulation pursuant to Government Code 6000 case #A227454 on December 30, 2004 and as such is the appropriate newspaper to place legal and public notices for the South Orange County Judicial District and the community of Ladera Ranch.

Visitors to San Bernardino National Forest will be able to enjoy picnic areas, trailheads and recreational day-use sites without having to purchase an Adventure Pass on six days this year. These “fee free” days are offered across the country by the U.S. Forest Service: • Feb. 19: President’s Day • June 9: National Get Outdoors Day • Sept. 22: National Public Lands Day • Nov. 11 - 12: Veterans Day Weekend “From Wrightwood to Idyllwild, the San Bernardino National Forest

offers a variety of rich experiences for visitors,” said Forest Supervisor Jody Noiron. “You can play in snow, hike the tallest peaks in Southern California, explore hundreds of miles of dirt roads and immerse yourself in nature.” For non-fee free days, the Adventure Pass costs $5 for a day pass and $30 for an annual one. Funds raised go back in to recreation sites for maintenance of parking lots, bathrooms, trash cans, signage, trailheads and other recreation

facilities. Visitors who inadvertently commit a daily Adventure Pass on “fee free” days can have it replaced free-ofcharge. Forest visitors are reminded that even though the Adventure Pass fee will be waived, other fees such as campground, reservation and group site fees will still be applicable. For more information on the National Forest Adventure Pass, visit our website at http://www.fs.usda.gov/ adventurepass.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts Presents EDDIE IZZARD: BELIEVE ME TOUR A Funny and Emotional Show Revealing the Man Behind the Stand-up Segerstrom Center for the Arts welcomes comedian Eddie Izzard in his new show Eddie Izzard: Believe Me Tour on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. in Segerstrom Hall. Produced by WestBeth Entertainment, this funny and emotional show reveals the man behind the stand-up with all of the fascination the ridiculous fans expect from an Eddie Izzard performance. Tickets for Eddie Izzard start at $39 and go on sale Sunday, December 17 at 10 a.m. and will be available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 556-2787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 20 or more, please call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. Izzard’s first book, Believe Me, was just chosen by Bill Gates as one of the “5 Amazing Books I Read This Year.” Released on June 13, 2017, Believe Me is a New York Times Best Seller. Writing with the same candor and insight evident in his comedy, he reflects on a childhood marked by the loss of his mother, boarding school, and alternative sexuality, as well as a life in comedy, film, politics, running and philanthropy. Honest and generous, Izzard’s Believe Me is an inspired account of a very singular life thus far. Izzard can currently be seen costarring opposite Judi Dench as her son Bertie, the King-in-waiting in the critically acclaimed film, Victoria and Abdul. The film premiered at The Venice Film Festival on September 3, 2017 and opened to the public on September 22, 2017. Over the course of a thirty-year career, Eddie Izzard has proven himself to be a creative chameleon, inhabiting the stage and film and television screen with an unbelievable fervor. Born in Yemen and raised in Northern Ireland, Wales, and England, he lost his mother at the age of six, and that has affected the rest of his life. In his teens, he dropped out of university and took to the streets of London as part of a comedy double act. When his partner went on vacation, Izzard kept busy by inventing a one-man escape act, and thus a solo career was ignited. As a stand-up comedian, Izzard has captivated audiences with his surreal, stream-of-consciousness comedy lines such as “Cake or Death?” “Death Star Canteen,” and “Do You Have a Flag?” have the status of great rock lyrics. As a selfproclaimed “action transvestite,” Izzard broke a mold performing in

makeup and heels, and has become as famous for his “total clothing” rights as he has for his art. In Believe Me, he recounts the dizzying rise he made from the streets of London to West End theaters, to Wembley Arena, Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl. Izzard is arguably one of today’s top comedians. He is touring his Force Majeure show—so far in more than forty countries worldwide and in four languages: English, French, German, and Spanish. With his brand of keenly intelligent humor that ranges from world history to historical politics, sexual politics, mad ancient kings, and chickens with guns, he has built an extraordinary fan base that transcends age, gender and race. For more information, visit EddieIzzard.com. WestBeth Entertainment has consistently delivered critically acclaimed, financially successful, groundbreaking productions for over 30 years. WestBeth’s ability to meld creative vision with financial and production savvy has created a unique company out of making artists’ and audience’s dreams come true. From Billy Connolly to Eddie Izzard, and The Jim Henson Company to John Leguizamo, WBE has been the creative catalyst, partner and producer of some of the most innovative performances and productions on the continent in venues throughout North America including Madison Square Garden, The Hollywood Bowl, Toronto’s Massey Hall, Chicago’s Chicago Theatre and even New York’s Radio City Musical Hall. With entertainment and audience enjoyment being a key element, WestBeth Entertainment’s most recent productions include: Eddie Izzard’s first US book tour for his memoir Believe Me, a New York Times Bestseller, North American debut of Australia’s comedy group Aunty Donna, Dylan Moran’s Off The Hook Airline; and Omaha Steaks International, Official Fine Food Retailer. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence, offering unsurpassed experiences and to engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring artsbased education and community engagement programs. Community engagement programs developed through the Center for Dance and Innovation and Center Without Boundaries also connect the Center more comprehensively with Orange County’s many diverse

communities. The CDI supports flagship artistic programming and a wide range of projects that celebrate innovation, nurture creativity and engage audiences of the future. It is home to the ABT Gillespie School and the School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities. The Center Without Boundaries develops partnerships with noncultural organizations to help them in their own efforts to respond the everchanging needs of the community. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is also proud to serve as the artistic home to three of the region’s major performing arts organizations: Pacific Symphony, Philharmonic Society of Orange County and Pacific Chorale, who contribute greatly to the artistic life of the region with annual seasons performed at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. In addition to Segerstrom Center for the Arts as a presenting and producing institution, it also identifies the beautiful 14-acre campus that embraces the Center’s own facilities as well as two independently acclaimed organizations: Tony Award®-winning South Coast Repertory and a site designated as the future home of the Orange County Museum of Art.

Bald eagle chicks hatch at Big Bear Lake

With all eyes glued to a live streaming “nest cam,” viewers from all over the country watched as a bald eagle chick worked its way out of the egg at approximately 9:57 a.m. on the morning of Feb. 11, 2018, at a nest in San Bernardino National Forest near Big Bear Lake, Calif. The second chick hatched at approximately 12:20 p.m. On Feb. 12, 2018. Two eggs were laid in early Jan. in the nest of a pair of eagles. The pair took turns on the nest during the 35 day incubation period, including through a snow storm. The second egg was laid three days later than the first and is expected to hatch within a few days. In November 2016, the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, with the support of the U.S. Forest Service, installed a live-stream camera near the nest. The livestream can be viewed at http://www.iws.org/ livecams.html (Select “Big Bear Eagle Cam, Big Bear Lake). The camera allows viewers to watch the nest action up close and personal without causing any disturbance that might result in the eagles abandoning the chicks. The parents are a newly identified nesting pair. Forest Service biologists believe that the female hatched from

this nesting area in February 2012 and that she now occupies her natal territory after it was abandoned in 2017. On the live-stream camera, she can be distinguished from the male by a few black-tinged tail feathers. By next year, when she has gained her full adult plumage, those feathers will be all white. She is also larger than the male, a size distinction common in most raptors. Both parents share in incubation and parenting duties. If all goes well, the chicks will leave the nest in two and a half to three months. They’ll stay close to their parents while they hone their hunting skills. Until then, the parents will continue to help provide food. This Big Bear nesting territory has produced four eagles since the first successful nesting occurred early in 2012. To protect the eagles from disturbances which could affect young survival, the area surrounding the nest is completely closed to all public entry. The public is invited to help Forest Service and California State Park biologists at the remaining winter bald eagle counts on Saturday, March 10. The events are held at six Inland Empire lakes, including Big Bear Lake.

For more information about bald eagles and viewing opportunities, call or visit the Forest Service’s Big Bear Discovery Center (909-382-2790; 40971 North Shore Drive/Hwy 38, Fawnskin, CA 92333). The mission of the U.S. Forest Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is to sustain the health, diversity and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations. The agency manages 193 million acres of public land, provides assistance to state and

private landowners, and maintains the largest forestry research organization in the world. Public lands the Forest Service manages contribute more than $13 billion to the economy each year through visitor spending alone. Those same lands provide 20 percent of the nation’s clean water supply, a value estimated at $7.2 billion per year. The agency has either a direct or indirect role in stewardship of about 80 percent of the 850 million forested acres within the U.S., of which 100 million acres are urban forests where most Americans live.

Garage space isn’t just for cars anymore

The word garage, when looked up in the dictionary, has a simple meaning: a building or indoor area for parking or storing motor vehicles. By and large, this definition sums up exactly what comes to mind for most folks when they hear the word. But for some folks, garages are so much more than a space to park the family minivan and store the cumbersome and unattractive trash and recycling bins. Instead, they are functioning spaces of the home that, in the eye of the homeowner, serve just as much purpose as a kitchen or a bathroom and deserve just as much attention to detail. More and more, people are using garages as space to actually live in. It isn’t just extra room anymore. Since the 1950s, most garages in North America are of the “attached” variety, meaning that they are part of the actual main home and not a separate building on the property. From music studios to man caves, art spaces to playrooms, garages are quickly becoming more integral parts of the family home. They are heated and cooled. They are equipped with cable and Internet capabilities. They are accessorized with attractive lighting and flooring choices. While wall cabinetry units may still house things like a yard rake

and a collection of tennis racquets and lacrosse sticks, they are also being chosen to integrate in such a fashion that the garage is truly seen as another room in the home, no matter what the intended end use of the square footage. The gateway to the garage, of course, is the garage door. Garage doors, even though they impact the exterior look of the home, have not always been given as much careful consideration, as a design element, as the rest of the house. But now, more than ever, garage doors are getting special treatment in the design arena - both from the exterior and interior perspectives. A consumer using garage space as an art studio may choose a door with more window panels, as to increase and enhance the natural light that comes into the space. The parents of a budding rock band musician who uses the space as a performing and recording area might need to take into account the ability of the door to reduce the noise carrying to other parts of the house. Garage spaces can even be beautifully appointed to serve as living rooms, sunrooms, and a variety of other entertaining spaces that integrate seamlessly with the design and decor of the rest of the home. A ground-breaking addition to

the garage world is the new Trento Collection, distributed by Amarr, a company that has been a leader in the garage door industry with decades of innovation and design. Available in an almost unlimited number of looks, doors in the Trento Collection can be customized to fit the architecture of any home. Unlike traditional garage doors that operate via a series of springs, rails and tracks along the ceiling, Trento Collection garage doors showcase revolutionary technology and Italian design, featuring a patented overlap design that allows the door to open by folding neatly in half without any ceiling hardware to clutter the

overhead space in the garage. This allows for a Trento door to take up far less space and appear significantly sleeker on the inside and outside than the traditional garage door. So give your garage another look. It is a fine space for doing the things that traditionally make us think of garages, of course, but take a look at your garage space with a fresh eye. The space can be so much more. Entertaining space, work space, a space for a personal hobby that you’ve always wanted in your home but could never figure out how to have. The possibilities are endless. -(BPT)

Heritage Pointe Hosts 28th Annual Fundraising Gala; Raises $200,000

The Ladera Ranch News

Event Co-chair Donna Markovitz, Keynote Speaker Ron Suskind, and Heritage Pointe, Orange County’s premier independent, assisted-living Event Co-chair Gail Taleisnik and memory care Senior community, hosted its 28th Annual Fundraising Gala “8 OVER 80” in grand style at the elegant Island Hotel in Newport Beach. The festivities began with a sumptuous cocktail reception in the foyer of the Grand Ballroom, followed by a delectable four course dinner inside the elegant Grand Ballroom, with over 500 guests in attendance at this not-to-be-missed annual Gala. Barbara Shapiro, well-known Orange County philanthropist, Chaired this year’s gala, joined by her committee consisting of long-time Heritage Pointe Board member, Roberta Feuerstein, Ann Miller, and Elana Samson. All four of these women have lent their tremendous support to many organizations within the Orange County Jewish community, and Heritage Pointe was extremely fortunate to have them all serve for this auspicious and celebratory event. “It is an honor to have been asked to Chair this very significant event, recognizing eight outstanding individuals who are in their 80s, and who have continued to give back to their community in so many ways,” stated Event Chair Barbara Shapiro. “I try to be someone who would have made my Mother and Grandmother, of blessed memory, proud. Because I lost them at a young age, I appreciate the wisdom of my elders. You learn a lot Madeline Zuckerman, Mike Silverman, CEO of Heritage Pointe, and spending time with older people. Hearing their stories of love, overcoming Beth Slavin, Director of Philanthropy for Heritage Pointe hardships, their successes, and family dynamics, can inspire you to avoid or embrace those aspects of life.” Shapiro continued. This event honored “8 Over 80” exemplary Orange County philanthropists, who are role models for charitable giving and the spirit that makes such generosity possible. The distinguished group of “8 Over 80” Honorees recognized at this year’s Gala included Leona Aronoff-Sadacca, Dr. Doris Chasin, Rose Lacher, Dr. Joe & Barbara Lebovitz, Marlene Mitnick, Dr. Herb Modelevsky, Blossom Siegel, and Polly Sloan. “8 OVER 80” lauds the creativity and significance of the over 80 generation, something our honorees demonstrate every day,” stated Beth Slavin, Director of Philanthropy for Heritage Pointe. “Each honoree vigorously supports worthy causes that continually enrich our community and inspire individuals. With 30 % of the U.S. population expected to reach 80 or older by 2030, “8 OVER 80” reflects the changing times in which we live. We asked the Orange County Jewish community to nominate these philanthropic individuals from our community, therefore, Heritage Pointe did not select these individuals. These honorees, who are in their ninth and tenth decades, continue to live lives of remarkable achievement, vitality, and civic engagement. During the Gala a very special and touching video was shown, produced by Josh Friedman, which gave all of the guests a snapshot into the lives of these Kathy Waldman finding a extraordinary honorees. Sharon Kraus and Shirley Field treasure shopping Scott Siegel, who was recognized last year along with his wife Leslie, as Heritage Pointe’s Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree, presented the “8 Over 80” distinguished Honorees with their special awards during the Gala. “This celebration represents all that the Orange County Jewish community should be proud of -- a rich heritage of giving, a heritage of caring for others – a heritage of repairing the world one mitzvah at a time,” stated Heritage Pointe CEO Mike Silverman. The evening’s entertainment was provided by the highly-acclaimed Bonnie Foster Productions, featuring its high-energy seven-piece band performing a variety of music for all guests to enjoy. Heritage Pointe is a nonprofit, residential community of 225 residents in Mission Viejo, California, providing independent, assisted-living, and memory care services for the elderly, while incorporating Jewish traditions and lifestyles. Heritage Pointe offers specialized social, cultural, religious, and educational activities for its residents. Contributions from this event will benefit the Heritage Fund, which provides assistance to residents who are in financial need. Heritage Pointe’s vision is simple, to foster an exceptional environment based on Jewish values where all community members, including seniors, their families, and volunteers can learn, grow, live well, and flourish.
