POST OFFICE CREWS DELIVER LADERA RANCH NEWS
United States Postal carriers at the Mission Viejo Post office get ready to load this week’s edition of the Ladera Ranch News. According to Jerry White, publisher of the Ladera Ranch News,” Our goal is deliver the newspaper every week to every single family residence in Ladera Ranch. The newspaper which began in 2003, was adjudicated by the Superior Court in December of 2004 as a newspaper of general circulation for the communities of Ladera Ranch, Las Flores, and Wagon Wheel. As the only weekly newspaper exclusively for Ladera Ranch we try to deliver a superior newspaper, and in this context we are constantly striving to improve the delivery as well,” said White. “When we first initiated local delivery of the Ladera Ranch News” he continued, “We started with young newsboys who traveled throughout the communities of Covenant Hills, Oak Knoll, Bridgepark, Flintridge, Township, Terramor, Avendale, Wycliffe, and Echo Ridge. At that time we were the only publication in Ladera Ranch .Time has proven that the United States Post Office seems to be the most reliable method of delivery.” “Subsequently,” White continued,”
We branched out to include bulk stations where additional copies of the Ladera Ranch News were left in local retail businesses as well as subscriptions which were mailed primarily to out of town readers who wanted to keep up with events in Ladera Ranch.” White went on to say that” The Ladera Ranch News has also expanded into an electronic version
which is available on the web at Laderaranchnews.com. The newspaper has been constantly expanding and seeking new columnists, and local writers to augment our popular publication. One of our most widely regarded features is Society Scene by Kelly Bennett.” Kelly Bennett is the popular host of the television and radio show “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly”.
Her Society column is the most widely read Society column in all of Orange County appearing in five local newspapers. The Ladera Ranch News is part of the Mission Viejo News Group, which also publishes the Coto de Caza News, Mission Viejo News, San Clemente News, and the Newport News.

Walking to Exercise for Fitness Better Health and Fitness Are Just Steps Away By Nancy Shepherd For years it was believed that exercise for fitness had to be very strenuous to have any noticeable benefit. However, it is now recognized that something as simple as walking can be as efficient as more rigorous activities. The key is the type of walking you do. Simply strolling is better than nothing; it at least gets you moving and keeps your joints limber. But if you’re walking to exercise for fitness, you’ll need to step up the pace. Depending on your current health and your fitness goals, you can choose from brisk walking, power walking, and pole walking. Brisk walking can help you lose weight, improve your mood, manage Type 2 diabetes, lower blood pressure, and normalize cholesterol. Done consistently, it is as effective for reducing the risk of heart attack as jogging. As a weight-bearing exercise, it also contributes to strong bones and reduces risk from osteoporosis. All it takes is a good, supportive pair of walking shoes and enough space to work up to a good pace. Page 4
To gain the benefits of brisk walking, your speed should be fast enough to raise your heart rate, but still allow you to comfortably carry on a conversation. After a five to ten minute warm-up at a slower pace, increase to the brisk pace and maintain it for at least 30 minutes. You’ll get best results from engaging in the activity no fewer than five days a week. The next level of walking for fitness is power walking. At this level you can burn almost as many calories as jogging but without the jarring impact on your joints. In one study, women who incorporated three power walks per week into their walking routines lost five times as much belly fat than women whose workouts consisted of only brisk walking -- even though they burned the same number of calories. To take your workout to the power walking level, do your warm-up walk, then bend your elbows and swing your arms as you stride energetically. Strive for a pace of four miles an hour, an intensity at which conversation is no longer comfortable. Pole walking gives you all the
The Ladera Ranch News
benefits of power walking and then some. Adding poles to your walking routine involves more muscles of the upper body, so you burn more calories and tone your upper body as well as your legs. Additionally, the poles provide stability and relieve some of the load from the hips and knees, which may make it easier for older people to take part. Walking with poles results in a greater aerobic workout without having to walk any faster. Even though using the poles raises the heart rate higher and burns more calories than walking without poles, walkers don’t perceive the exertion as harder. It has also been reported to relieve neck and shoulder pain. To pole walk correctly, it is best to get some instruction so you’ll get the most from your efforts. You’ll learn the proper length for your poles and the most effective techniques. Generally, walking with poles is like power walking, except that you will push down and back on the poles to propel yourself more powerfully with each stride. There’s no longer any excuse for
not working out. Walking to exercise makes improved fitness accessible to nearly everyone. Start where you are and do as much as you can do. As your fitness improves, step up to the next level of walking and you’ll be taking positive steps toward better health.

LOCAL DENTIST DR. MICHAEL TESSIER REVEALS THE SECRETS OF OVERLY SENSITIVE TEETH A patient of long-standing came in s e v e r a l weeks ago, complaining that her teeth were sensitive, generally, all over mouth. When I visually Dr. Michael Tessier inspected her mouth, there was no evidence of cracked teeth, or tired-old fillings, or bad crowns, or gum recession- all the usual suspects. There was nothing that I could see that might contribute to tooth sensitivity. We treated the sensitive teeth on the right wide with the laser. When she came back two weeks later, she said that she couldn’t wait to have me do the left side, because all the sensitivity was gone on the right side. Positively amazing. So, when you eat ice cream, or drink a margarita, one of your molars, or maybe even a bicuspid, is sensitive. When you take that problem tooth to your friendly, neighborhood dentist, and he says you need that tooth capped (or crowned). What’s that about? When someone drills on a crystalline structure, like glass, or porcelain, or tooth enamel, the heat of friction from the drilling device puts microscopic fractures in the material. When a dentist has to put a big filling in a tooth, those little fractures pre-dispose that tooth to further fracture. The fractures
virtually split the tooth. Later, after years of chewing trauma, the nerve becomes irritated from this microscopic splitting during chewing or clenching. This hypersensitivity is usually manifested as temperature sensitivity. Just replacing the filling doesn’t help because the cracks are already there. A crown, on the other hand, holds the tooth together, like the band on a barrel, so the splitting activity stops. If the trauma to the nerve of the tooth didn’t damage that nerve irreparably, which would necessitate a root canal (removing the damaged nerve from the root of the tooth), a crown is all that’s necessary to allow you to return to the pleasures of ice cream-eating. There are also instances where a tooth is sensitive to cold or even sweets, and a fracture is not the culprit. This is most often a result of root sensitivity, where the root of the tooth is exposed due to gum recession. There is also a setting on my soft-tissue laser (Periolase) for treating teeth that are cold sensitive due to root sensitivity. Dr. Tessier says “If this article brings forward a question, please call me and we can chat. Consultation appointments are always complimentary. Please don’t hesitate to call my office if you have any questions about this process, or any other of the modern technologies we can use to make your smile whiter and your day better.” Dr. Michael Tessier is located in Los Flores plaza at 28562 Oso Parkway. Most major credit cards and dental plans are cheerfully accepted. Telephone (949)459 -7212

Stay Motivated All Year with These Easy Fitness Tips In 2015, millions of people will make a vow to lose weight or start a fitness plan, but many will lose the motivation it takes to sustain a fit and active lifestyle within just a few weeks. With the right tools and support though, finding motivation to stay fit can be a snap. Father, New York Times Best-Selling Author, and “Extra” TV host Mario Lopez finds his motivation to stay fit using the techniques of his personal trainer, Jimmy Peña. Now, Peña wants to help people keep their fitness vows using the same techniques by offering these simple tips to maintain motivation all year long: Start Small – If you haven’t been active in a long time, don’t stress your muscles by doing too much too fast. Start slowly by taking the stairs or squeezing in a 20-minute jog on your lunch break. Build Up Endurance – Track your progress and continue to build upon your exercise activities – whether you’re running or jogging a route, walking a path, biking, swimming or weight training – to push yourself a little farther each week. Grab a Partner – “You can improve exercise performance by having a partner who pushes you to your limits. But if you prefer to workout solo, the built-in audio trainer in the new MOTOACTV from Motorola can provide motivation. It’s like having a personal trainer right in your ear,” says Peña. The new device tracks fitness stats including time, distance, heart rate and even calories burned. Then, upload your workout to www.motoactv.com to analyze the performance data tracked by the
device – and challenge your friends to beat your latest stats. “A little competition can be a big motivator,” explains Peña. Mix it Up – It’s important to make a fitness schedule and stick to it, but that doesn’t mean doing the same routine over and over. To stay motivated, try changing your workout. From walking to running to cycling, you can always find a new activity to challenge yourself – and you can bring MOTOACTV with you. Sweatproof and rain-resistant, this device also features a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass display. You can wear it on your wrist, clip it to your shirt, or purchase a mount to attach it to your bike during an outdoor ride, making it easy to change up your activities to keep you interested (sold separately). Turn Up the Volume – “Music is key for most of my clients. When they’re running out of steam, the right song can help put them on track to meet their fitness goals,” says Peña. Creating playlists of different music that keeps you motivated for different types of activities can really help keep you going. Remember to refresh playlists, as you can quickly tire of the same music. “MOTOACTV is a personal trainer and a In addition, users can stay tangle-free, since the DJ all at the same time,” says Lopez. “It tracks all device allows you to enjoy a completely wireless the data I need – from pace, heart rate, distance, workout via stereo Bluetooth enabled headphones, miles logged, and it plays all my favorite music. Three CUSD Schools Awarded “Innovation in Education” Grants Three Capistrano Unified School District schools Aliso Viejo Middle School, Aliso Niguel and Tesoro high school have been named recipients of the first “Innovations in Education” grants from Cox Communications. The CUSD schools are among 14 Orange County schools awarded grants to help fund advanced science and technology programs for students in grades K-12. The $1,731 grant for Aliso Viejo Middle School will support hardware and software purchases for the robotics and engineering class in which students learn to write computer codes and programming, and gain an understanding of logic, control parameters, and sensor feedback sequences. The grant application was written by science teacher Mark Groothuis. At Aliso Niguel High School, the $4,948 grant will benefit the school’s iPad Academy . More than 420 students use their iPads to take tests, share information about projects, and participate in online discussion groups in the Voluntary iPad Academy . The grant will provide iPads to students in the program who cannot afford their own device. The grant application was written by science teacher Erik Silberman.
Tesoro High School will use its $5,000 grant for science laboratory classes as students gather, analyze, and share sensor data collected using hand-held devices, such as in measuring water content in soil, UVB radiation, solar energy, energy from photosynthesis, and light needed for growth. The data can then be shared and processed wirelessly on any
device with a web browser such as a smart phone or tablet. The grant application was written by science teacher Amy Varricchio. The “Innovation in Education” grant program, which is in its inaugural year, invited principals, administrators, and teachers at eligible schools to submit a grant application for classroom projects that focus on skills-
based learning, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design, and Mathematics), digital literacy, or cyber citizenship (responsibly using the Internet). A panel of educational, community, and business leaders helped Cox score the applications.

Fashion Show at the Ritz Carlton Raises $250,000 for Camino Health Center Photos by John Eckmier Continuing its beloved tradition of beginning the official holiday shopping season with a dynamic fashion show featuring South Coast Plaza retailers, the Auxiliary for Camino Health Center held its 2014 Camino Health Center Auxiliary Fashion Show at the Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. With more than 400 guests in attendance, all were welcomed by tuxedo-clad gentleman and escorted into the event. Total raised for this exquisite event was more than $250,000 for the nonprofit. The program started with welcoming remarks from Ericka Waidley, President of Camino Health Center Auxiliary then an invocation from Sister Martha Ann Fizpatrick from Mission Hospital. A special video presentation was introduced from Debra Drew, CEO of Camino Health Center which tugged at many heart strings as to how Camino Health Center helps so many. “Camino Health Center is truly blessed to have the support and engagement of the Auxiliary,” shared Drew. “Since it was formed in 1985, the Auxiliary has raised more than $6 million to enhance the health and quality of life in our community.” The fashion show then began, and it was spectacular! With featured designs from Anne Fontaine, Bally, Brunello Cucinelli, Diane von Furstenberg, DKNY, Donna Karan, Façonnable, Loro Piana, Marni, MaxMara, Saks Fifth Avenue, St. John and Stuart Weitzman, and Salvatore Ferragamo; each were truly outstanding and brought excitement to the ladies (and men!) in attendance. Prior to the event, folks were able to peruse the many silent auction items that were available which helped raise $60,000 for the nonprofit. These items always feature premier pieces and don’t forget the luxury opportunity drawings! This year’s opportunity winners included Pat Atallah of Tustin who won the Napa Valley Experience; Jimmie Montgomery from Costa Mesa won the Revitalize, Refresh and Renew package donated by Pacific Coast Cosmetic and Laser Medical Center, and Jennifer Bartusick of Newport Beach won the Bally Bloom handbag, matching wallet and patent leather ankle boots. The lunch menu for guests attending were Heirloom tomatoes with extra virgin olive oil, local burrata cheese and basil for starters. The main course consisted of Orange glazed chicken breast with mixed vegetables and almond quinoa, then dessert was a duo of crunchy chocolate cake, passion fruit curd, chocolate caramel sauce, berries and Greek yogurt panna cotta, raspberries and almond crunch. The event was made possible thanks to the generosity of Diamond Level Sponsor South Coast Plaza as well as support provided by: Bank of America, Mission Hospital Executive Team, Pacific Life Foundation, Linda and Rice Berkshire, Nanette Buccola, Anne and Michael Crawford, Sandy and Tom Ewing, Mary J. George, Susan and Keith Hoffnagle, Nancy and Jeffrey Lavigne, Ann and Jim Morris, Marjorie and Jay Warren, Marilyn and Steve Weber, Teresa and Ira Bell, MD, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur B. Birtcher, Mary Jane Foley and Glad To Be Here Foundation in Loving Memory of John V. Foley II, Patti and Sam Fukushima, Margaret and Ponnappa Kalimada, MD, Judy and Michael Leon, Susan D. Morrison and Bonnie and Phil Presicci. Camino Health Center is a fully licensed, community-based clinic that provides affordable, quality primary medical and dental care. The center serves over 120,000 visits annually through its medical clinic, mobile medical and diabetes vans, pediatric dental clinic and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. Why Getting Messy is Good
Playing outside and getting messy may just seem like fun to kids, but playtime actually has an important role in child development. Research shows that various types of play and parental interaction are vital to the healthy development of children. That’s why child care author and mom of three, Dr. Michele Borba is letting moms know it’s okay to let their little ones get dirty and have a blast doing it, instead of fretting about the mess. “By teaching kids that it’s okay to get messy sometimes and even encouraging it occasionally, we as parents show them that nobody is perfect, that accidents happen and most importantly, we teach them to be themselves,” said Borba. “Childhood is just too short to worry about getting dirty. Moreover, today’s advanced detergents, such as all(r) Oxi-Active, can remove many tough stains in one wash, but the memories that come with making them can last a lifetime.” “We’ve always known that kids and play are just a natural combo,” Borba said. “But new research also shows that letting kids engage in self-directed play has immense value for their social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth.” * Play expands kids’ minds and neurological development. Self-initiated play improves skills such as problem solving and interpreting and is important to brain development and learning. * Play boosts children’s creativity and imagination. Play gives children the chance to invent, build, expand, explore and develop a whole different part of the brain. Page 16
* Play stretches our children’s attention spans. Playing outdoors just 30 minutes a day increases child’s ability to focus and pay attention. * Play boosts self-confidence and self-regulation. Kids learn to become masters of their own destiny without an adult directing, pushing, managing or scheduling * Play helps kids learn to enjoy just being in their own company, entertaining themselves and developing identity. Ease that guilt when your kid says, “I’m bored, Mom!” and wants to be amused by you. Borba urges parents to ask these questions:
The Ladera Ranch News
* How much are your kids plugged into some kind of a digital device? (Did you know the average child is plugged in for 7 1/2 hours a day?) * How often are they glued to that TV or clicking that keypad? * How much free time do they have (unscheduled, unsupervised)? * How often do they go outdoors to just decompress? * Do your kids know how to entertain themselves and enjoy the great outdoors? * How do you respond when they get messy?
