To p T e n B ac k -To - Sc h o o l Car s f or 2013- 2014 By Rhonda Manning Tools for school have become more high-tech, not to mention more costly since I attended high school and college. Today, there are 9.5 million young adult drivers on the road. Parents not only shop for pens, paper, notebooks, and backpacks, now they make a trip to their local car dealer. When it comes to selection, safety and style rank high. Parents also consider such factors as cost, value, and fuel economy. Kelley Blue Book (KBB.com), a well-known source for new and used car information, has come out with their choice of cars for student drivers to begin the new 2013-2014 school year. Something else parents will be glad to note-the price is right on most of the models, which start below $20,000. Here are KBB.com’s top 10 recommendations: #10 2014 Fiat 500L

Aesthetic-wise, this is my favorite car. It’s cute and it even looks economical. The 500L makes for a roomier interior that can easily seat up to 5 passengers. Loading and unloading is a breeze with a hatchback and ample space in the back. The fuel economy isn’t bad either: 24 for the city; 33 highway, and 27 combined miles per gallon. I call it Euro elegance that handles well! #9 2013 Subaru Impreza

Versatility is the best feature of the Impreza. This Subaru boasts standard features such as Bluetooth and iPod controls, all-wheel drive, and cargo-hauling. Either a sedan Page 2

or hatchback will appeal to practical students or those with busy lifestyles. The fuel economy is decent with a combined mpg of 30; 27 city and 36 highway.

#5 2013 Honda Civic

#8 2013 Toyota Prius C

If gas mileage is a priority, then this is your car! Zip around the city in this cute little baby and you’ll get a whopping 53 mpg! Tops in the car industry. Yes, it’s a hybrid that can possibly save you a bundle. Add to that the Toyota name and their years of manufacturing America’s favorite cars, and you are off to a great start for the school year. Cha-ching! #7 2013 Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf is German engineering with an attitude that is gentle on the pockets. The entire car design, a sporty hatchback, fits a student’s lifestyle with ease. The fuel economy is average, with a combined mpg of 26. #6 2013 Kia Sportage

Though mileage isn’t one of this car’s attractions, being selected as a 2103 IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick is one of the Sportage’s best features. A very comforting fact when your teen is behind the wheel. The price tag is parent-friendly, and so is the warranty, which is lengthy.

The Ladera Ranch News

How amazing that you can still get this gem-of-a-car for under $20,000! I bought my daughter a Honda Civic back in 2004 for $18,000. Now, that’s value! Built to last, she drove it for years. Two-door coupe or 4-door sedan, you can’t go wrong with a Honda. The Civic gets good mileage, too at 28 city, 39 highway, and a combo mpg of 32. #4 2013 Mazda MAZDA3

Our number 4 car, the MAZDA3, has another distinction parents may find value-worthy. It has been featured on KKB.com’s list of 10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000 every year of its existence. Plans are to introduce a new MAZDA3 in 2014, so finding a good deal on this 2013 model should be a breeze. Plus, the MAZDA3 gets a hefty 40 mpg on the highway. Time to ride! #3 2014 Chevrolet Sonic

First, let me welcome an American car to the list. And, I am happy it is a Chevy! Very popular back in the day! This Chevy is sharp and the hatchback design resembles the Volkswagen Golf. It’s compact and sporty. You can also get this little beauty in a sedan. There is so much to love about the Chevy Sonic. Let’s start with the fuel economybetween 37-40 mpg on the highway. Impressive. How about 10 airbags? And, are you ready for this? The cost is just below $15,000. Sweet! #2 2014 Ford Focus

Here’s another nod to American car manufacturing at its best. Because of its sleek design and contemporary appointed interior, the Ford Focus can easily stand proud next to its European counterparts. Its good looks, Euro-flavor, top safety ratings, and impressive fuel economy make the Ford Focus an all-around great car. Yoo-hoo for the US! #1 2014 Nissan Versa Note Our A #1, list topper is a zippy compact that designers didn’t cut corners with its style or beauty, plus they added versatility to boot. The 2014 Nissan Versa Note features a new-tech interior, 40 mpg on the highway, 5-door hatchback styling, and a price that starts under $15,000. Did I hear the word s-a-v-i-n-g-s? Versa Note will look fabulous on a high school or college campus. Need I say more? It’s back to school in style!

tech trends that keep kids in touch Chances are your young kids love to play games on their tablets or even your smartphone, and your teens and college students rely on technology to stay in touch with friends. But as they head back to school, keep in mind technology can also help students discover the joy of learning, and keep them on track with their schoolwork. “Technology is a natural part of learning for kids today,” says Conor Kearney, vice president of computing for office supply giant Staples. “And where once teachers might have viewed technology in the classroom as a distraction, today they are finding ways to integrate it into lessons - and helping students connect with material through the technology they already love.” As your children head back to school, here are a handful of tech trends that can help make the school year more productive and fun: Chromebooks put the shine on learning - Chromebooks are easyto-use, lightweight laptops that run the popular Google operating system. Their portability and ease of use make them perfect for youngsters just learning how to use technology in the classroom. Samsung, HP and Acer all offer Chromebooks, and you can find them in Staples stores across the country or online at Staples.com. Page 4

And talking about tablets - Smaller, lighter weight and powerful, tablets are a great alternative to full-sized laptops, fitting easily into backpacks and totes. Tablets such as the Microsoft Surface, Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy, Samsung Note 8.0 and Kindle Fire HD help students stay connected online and in and out of the classroom. There’s an app for that - No conversation about technology is complete without the right software to complement your hardware. Learning apps abound, so start out by consulting with your child’s teacher to see if he or she will be working with students using a specific app or website this year. Then head over to pcmag.com for reviews and information on the best learning apps for children. Accessories make the tech Although technology is becoming more durable every year, most kids can still use some help keeping their tech tools in good shape. Jansport sleeves combine fashion and function in a wide assortment of tablet sleeves and laptop cases. Kids can choose from animal prints to plaids and even neon accents. For those who want to combine the roominess of a backpack with the protection of a laptop case, the Jansport Superbreak Sleeve is a durable and fashionable option.

Free university learning Parents who purchase a qualified touchscreen laptop from Staples can also enroll their college-age students in Microsoft Office 365 University for free. The program (usually sold for $79.99) provides students with four years of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote and Outlook for free. To b e e l i g i b l e , purchasers must show valid college/university identification or an original acceptance letter to a postsecondary school along with their photo ID. Making it all easy - Wireless networking, cloud backup, data protection - it c an all get pretty confusing for a parent. F o r t u n a t e l y, Staples EasyTech associates have the expertise and answers to help. They offer a variety of tech services for just $99 each, including setting

up your student’s PC, getting your data vault (including cloud backup, Internet security and virus protection) up and running or coming to your home to make sure your wireless network is functioning properly.

Saying goodbye to summer doesn’t have to be a sentimental ending when you consider it’s also a beginning - the kick off to autumn and the holiday season. The promise of fall is in the air. It’s a great time to dress up your home for fall entertaining; whether that means friends gathered around the television rooting for your favorite team or the ultimate traditional Thanksgiving feast. “Decorating trends for this fall are really fun and functional,” says visual merchandiser John Griffith. “Colors that evoke a sense of nostalgia and family are a really big part of the visual design message for autumn 2013. Reds, golds and oranges are trending this fall. These hues are not only warm and comforting; they’re reflective of the season.” Griffith and teammate Julie Robbins add their own unique spin on the latest trends to create seasonal design vignettes for Replacements, Ltd., the world’s largest retailer of old and new china, crystal, silver and collectibles. Whether you are planning a casual family gathering or an elegant dinner party, Robbins suggests easy ways to mix in great fall colors. This can

be as simple as adding a charger plate or colorful serving pieces. “ U s i n g colored glass is fantastic way of infusing autumn colors to create a seasonal feel,” says Robbins. “Amber colored glass is really popular this fall because the rich, warm color goes with so many patterns and designs. I’m big on the pressed vintage patterns; depression glass, coin glass and sandwich glass are all very lovely and nostalgic. We’re actually mixing and matching patterns from historic American glassmakers including Federal, Indiana Glass and Fostoria on our tables. It looks great to mix designs which share the same colors or combine an array of colors within a place setting.” Metal serveware is another popular trend this fall. “We’re incorporating metal serveware into many of our displays because you can do so much with it from a design standpoint,” s a y s G r i ff i t h . “These are great accent pieces you can dress up or down, plus it is family- and football-season friendly. Metal serveware is also

very functional. Once heated, the alloy retains warmth to keep food warmer longer or cooler if you chill these pieces. Plus it is easy to clean and doesn’t have to be polished. We’re using a lot of fun shapes, like leaf-shaped pieces and turkey platters.” Fall’s bountiful harvest translates into the home this season. Robbins is using natural elements in her table designs that evoke a sense of the first Thanksgiving. “I suggest filling vases, glasses or serving bowls with dried beans, acorns or even kernels of dried deer corn. Not only does this look pretty, you can also mix in candles or flowers and use these natural elements to hold those items in place.” Robbins adds apples, gourds, pumpkins and green pears are among fruits and vegetables you can use on your table or anywhere in your home to create a brilliant splash of color. She says you can find more decorating ideas at Replacements’ YouTube channel and Facebook page.

local dentist Michael Tessier Says avoiding Tooth decay is Getting easier than ever Before Years ago some of the reasons people gave for not having the cavities in our teeth filled were:” the “shot”, the “the “drill”, the “numbness”, the pain” Dr. Michael Tessier associated with old-time dentistry. But, by using the Whisper Jet, a micro miniature sandblaster using 50 micron-size particles of aluminum oxide, and the Waterlase MD Laser, we get your fillings completed without anesthetic, and with no pain, because of today’s technology, Remembering that the decay process starts with acid-induced demineralization of the enamel of the teeth, here are some ways to avoid the need for dental work: Go to the dentist every six monthsfrequent visits help avoid big problems. Avoid industrially-manufactured foods, like chips or cookies or crackers. Instead, or after, eat raw carrots, celery or apples. Real foods have larger, fibrous particles which actually clean decay-producing sugars off the teeth). Avoid soft drinks, sweetened or otherwise. Instead, drink water, fluoridated or not. Chew sugarless gum. This stimulates acid-neutralizing saliva which counteracts the acidic end-products of bacterial metabolism that cause decay, and mechanically cleans the teeth.

Brush properly with fluoride toothpaste. Floss daily. That little point contact where adjacent teeth touch each other is not accessible to a toothbrush bristle. Remember, you only have to floss the ones you want to keep. By the way, there’s a significant link between the phosphoric acid used as a preservative in dark soft drinks and Alzheimer’s. Another reason to avoid them. We recently found a hard candy that’s sweetened with a Xylitol that coats the teeth with a decay-reducing micro-film. Something like fifteen flavors, no aftertaste. Good Stuff. There is a genetic pre-disposition to susceptibility to decay. Some people get cavities irrespective of how well they take care of their teeth; some people don’t take care of their teeth at all, and still never get cavities. It isn’t necessarily fair (how much in life is?), but the above can help. “The more I work with the laser and the sandblaster, filling teeth without the need for drilling and therefore anesthetic, the more I realize how much dentistry has changed over the last 30 years. When the drill and the carbide burr were our only cutting options, we made it more likely that, in their later adult hood, these teeth would crack, ultimately needing crowns. Today, we’re leaving these teeth stronger. This stuff is great,” he says with a smile. Dr. Michael Tessier is located in Los Flores Plaza at 28562 Oso Parkway. Most major credit cards and dental plans cheerfully accepted. Telephone (949) 459-7212

Fall Safely By Staying Ahead!

Temperatures are dropping, it’s getting darker earlier, baseball is wrapping up and football is beginning… Fall is in the air! Fall is now official as of Sunday, September 22nd, and as we head into cooler weather and the upcoming holiday season now is a good time to be reminded and start preparing ourselves for winter and holiday safety says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. “We’ll spend the next several months sharing specific safety information, however, this may be a good time to start thinking ahead as we move into Fall.” Most people will spend more time inside their homes cooking, holiday celebrations, using fireplaces, furnaces, and heaters as winter nears sys Chief DiGiovanna. It’s time to service your furnace, use fireplaces safely and use caution with space heaters. Exercise candle caution, change smoke alarm batteries during time change, practice Halloween safety, clean yard drains, use caution on ladders when cleaning roofs and gutters from leaves, needles and twigs before the rain season as well as preparing for those Santa Ana winds we get this time of year. Shoes or boots may be wet causing you to slip as you climb the ladder. Keep your driveway and walkway clear of falling leaves. They get very slippery when they are wet. Check and replace any home fire extinguishers that have expired. Always wear work gloves when doing outside yard work. It’s important to start planning now by staying ahead and not falling behind.

Cool car upgrades: How to enhance your ride Fall has finally arrived, meaning it’s time for the kids to hit the school books. And as the leaves gradually morph from green to gold, your driving schedule quickly accelerates from leisurely cruising to nonstop go, go, go. Besides taking the kids to and from school, there are plenty of after-school activities - football practice, cheerleading tryouts, piano lessons and math tutors that require additional drive time. Maybe a big-game tailgating party is on the agenda, too? Before the crazed driving crunch hits, you might want to make sure your car, truck, SUV or van is ready for the back-to-school rush and good to go through the fast-approaching holiday season. According to Peter MacGillivray, vice president of events and communication for the Specialty

Equipment Market Association (SEMA), an automotive trade organization with 6,500-plus member companies, there are endless amounts of innovative auto-enhancing products to help during the frantic driving season. “For 50-plus years, SEMA-member companies have been designing and producing clever, high-tech products that improve a vehicle’s appearance, comfort, performance and even fuel-savings,” said MacGillivray. Consumers can find these p r o d u c t s a n d m o r e a t w w w. enjoythedrive.com. “As families go back to school, many find themselves spending more time in their vehicles. There are automotive accessories that can make the overall ride better and a lot less stressful.” 1. Sit down: Best way to make passengers (and yourself) happy is to be comfortable. There are plenty of aftermarket seat-enhancing products from soft cushions to luxurious new car seats. There are also high-tech booster chairs and seats that

have folding desks/trays which are ideal for last-minute homework. 2. Child alert: For the ultimate in safety there are “future-is-now” seats with phone apps that detect and warn when the child wiggles out of the seat and another that has a mobile notification system to alert parents if they accidently left a child in a car seat. It also provides detailed information about the temperature inside the car. 3. Strap in: There are lots of stops on the school run and during holiday madness, so safety is top of mind. There are myriad types of safety belts and restraint options to hold you and the family securely in place. 4. Just in case: With the long line of impatient parents waiting to drop off or pick up their kids at school, fender benders happen. A flexible rubber license plate bumper will help protect your vehicle - and everybody else’s - from low-speed damage. 5. Cleanup duty: Breakfast on the run with kids can be messy. Check out the many choices of stylish seat covers and floor mats before the Cap’n Crunch and milk gets everywhere. If disaster does strike, there are several car care products that clean leather, plastic, carpet and windows.

6. Plug in: A good GPS system will solve the problem of getting lost with the kiddos. There’s a touch mirror display option that has a GPS and a backup camera in a universally mountable rearview mirror. If your engine light is on, there’s a product that captures the trouble code, takes you to a website to explain the problem and suggests solutions. And if you can’t find your car, there’s an electronic auto finder to help locate it. 7. Hold it: It’s not safe to try and juggle cell phones and tablets while driving. Same goes for hot coffee. Luckily there are articulated mounting systems for technology devices and drinks that can be mounted on the seats and/or dash. 8. Tire talk: With all the summer driving you’ve done, now might be the time for new tires. At the very least, check your tire pressure every month. The correct tire pressure lengthens tire life, saves fuel and enhances safety. A slick digital tire pressure gauge makes it easy. “These are just a few samples of the aftermarket products available for your vehicle,” says MacGillivray. “Most auto parts stores and national chains carry them, and you can easily find them online, too.”

Easy meal and snack ideas for families adjusting to busy school schedules As the relaxing days of summer come to a close, it can be challenging to smoothly transition to back-to-school time. While kids and families adjust to more hectic schedules, it’s more important than ever to fuel both body and mind with foods that nourish and satisfy.- With a few new meal and snack ideas, your family will have a head start on the season. When it comes to simple snacks it doesn’t get easier than fresh grapes. California’s fresh grape season is in full swing throughout the fall - good news for kids and their parents, too. Packed in a container for munching during lunch or snack breaks, grapes are a sweet, juicy and refreshing fruit with excellent credentials: * Grapes contain just 90 calories per 3/4 cup serving, with no fat or cholesterol, and they are very low in sodium. In addition, all colors of grapes - green, red and black - contain antioxidants and other polyphenols, w h i c h scientific studies suggest may help protect the heart and important cell functions. * Having a bowl of fresh

grapes handy for an after school snack is a delicious and smart alternative to chips, cookies and other manufactured foods, which are generally expensive and high in fat and salt. Plus, grapes are delightfully easy: no peeling or coring required. * Grapes make a simple snack that kids can make themselves. Try a fresh take on the PB and J classic. If needed, a parent can pre-slice the grapes, which can be done the night before; luckily grapes don’t brown when cut. Peanut butter can be replaced with almond butter or other nut butters and spreads. Peanut Butter and Grape Sandwich Ingredients: 1 slice of bread (wheat, sourdough, cinnamon swirl) 2 tablespoons peanut butter 1/4 cup red seedless California grapes, halved Directions: Spread peanut butter on bread. Place grape halves on top. Serve immediately. Adults can join in the fun too. Nutritious and delicious, a rice salad with grapes and golden beets will appeal to older children, teens and parents, and anyone wanting a fresh take on salads. -It’s also perfect for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets.

-Three food groups are well represented and the grapes add a juicy quality and a unique sweet and tangy flavor which complements the honey-vinaigrette dressing. Grapes also add a crispness that balances the textures of the chewy rice and the al dente beets. The salad can be served as a side for dinner or packed for school or office lunches. Grape, Golden Beet and Brown Rice Salad Ingredients: 4 medium golden beets, scrubbed 1 cup short grain brown rice (or 2 cups cooked brown rice) Salt to taste 1/3 cup chopped red onion 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon honey Black pepper, freshly ground, to taste 1 cup thinly sliced celery 1 cup halved red seedless California grapes Pinch cayenne 1/4 cup chopped Italian parsley Directions: Preheat the oven to 375 F. Trim off all but 1-inch of stem on the beets and place in a small baking dish. Cover with foil and bake until

a paring knife inserted into the center of the beets goes in easily, about 60 to 90 minutes. Let cool until easy to handle. Peel, then cut the beets into 1/2-inch wedges. Meanwhile, bring 2 cups of water, the rice and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Cover, reduce the heat to low and simmer covered until tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, 40 to 50 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes, and then transfer to a baking sheet to cool slightly. At the same time, combine the onion, garlic and vinegar in a large mixing bowl and let stand 15 minutes. Whisk in the oil, honey and salt and pepper to taste. Then add the rice, beets, celery, grapes, cayenne, parsley and toss. Serve warm or chilled. Makes 6 cups. For more grape ideas, go to grapesfromcalifornia. com or facebook.com/ grapesfromcalifornia.

Mission Preservation Foundation President George O’Connell, Honoree Mike Hagan and Wylie Aitken

Photos by: Carla Rhea Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Romance of the Mission benefit gala featured a spectacular concert by actress/singer Susan Egan and estimates net proceeds at $220,000. Over 400 guests were on hand to experience an elegant evening under the stars highlighted by honoring longtime Mission San Juan Capistrano supporter and former Mission Preservation Foundation Board member Mike Hagan. Event proceeds will further the preservation of historic Mission San Juan Capistrano including the initial investigation work necessary for conserving the historic Sala building. Guests entered the black tie affair through the beautiful Mission Gate House Entry with access to the new Mission Store. Cocktail hour in the lush front gardens was followed by a stunning concert in the ruins of The Great Stone Church by Tony Award nominee performer Susan Egan. Mission San Juan Capistrano Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence Adams was joined by Mission Preservation Board President George O’Connell to welcome guests and recognize the extensive support and commitment of 2013 honorary chair Mike Hagan. Attendees then stepped through the historic Resurgam displaying artifacts from the Mission’s collection into the Main Courtyard for a gourmet plated Matt Griffin, Barb and Don Beier and Krysti Griffen four-course candlelight dinner masterfully prepared and served by The RitzCarlton, Laguna Niguel. Lawrence Adams commented, “Tonight is about celebrating all that we’ve accomplished since last year’s event and honoring both past and present donors. New traditions this year included the first-time ringing of the bells at 6:00 p.m. to officially commence the evening festivities, then our guests entering the Mission’s front gardens through the new Gate House Entry and Mission Store.” The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange Bishop Kevin Vann led the invocation prior to dinner. During a short program, Gala committee members were recognized by Don Dorkowski and The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel’s General Manager Bruce Brainerd and Mission Preservation board member Connie Spenuzza drew opportunity drawing winners for a Ritz-Carlton get-a-way; vintage pendant, ring and earrings by Barbara Parkers, Inc.; a diamond cross by Roberto Coin; and a “Shop and Sip” event at the Mission Store. Beautiful candlelit tables featured floral arrangements in Romance of the Mission branded collectors champagne boxes filled with flowers reminiscent of Mission flowers. Each guest received collector’s edition Mission San Juan vintage postcards provided by Citizen’s Bank. PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S “RODRIGO’S CONCIERTO,” LED BY MUSIC DIRECTOR CARL ST.CLAIR

Pacific Symphony’s 35th anniversary season continues with the sizzling sounds of 20th-century Spain igniting in the hands of Music Director Carl St.Clair as he leads the orchestra into the exotic world of flamenco, guitar and Spanish poetry. The first Music Unwound concert of the season, the performance spotlights the well-known guitar concerto, Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez,” performed by renowned Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang. Hailed for her “feisty virtuosity, impeccable technique and sensitive musicianship… Yang’s guitar sings as if she had grown up in the shaded courtyards of Andalusia” (The New York Times). Then, in honor of William Bolcom’s 75th birthday, the Symphony performs the Pulitzer-Prize winning composer’s “Canciones de Lorca,” a song-cycle based on the language of Spain’s revered poet, Frederico García Lorca, which was composed in collaboration with tenor Plácido Domingo. The evocation of Lorca’s poetry is sung by multiple prize-winning tenor René Barbera and the music is being recorded for future release. Described by Variety as “fascinating” and “free-spirited,” the work was commissioned for and premiered at the opening of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall in 2006, and is dedicated to Pacific Symphony, Maestro St.Clair and Domingo. The program also includes a vivid Spanish ghost story, as the Symphony plays the five final selections of Manuel de Falla’s “El Amor Brujo” (Love, the Magician). De Falla’s suite was originally written for a famous flamenco gypsy dancer, Pastora Imperio, and tells the story of a woman, Candelas, who is haunted by the spirit of her past lover. The songs, written in the Andalusian Spanish dialect, are sung by mezzo-soprano Ola Rafało. To set the mood for the concert, Page 14

classical guitarist Joseph Yashar performs Spanish music in the concert lobby, and guests are invited to create their own poetry using phrases written by Lorca. Taking place Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 24-26, at 8 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, the concert includes a preview talk with Alan Chapman at 7 p.m. and a post-concert talkback with St.Clair, Bolcom and the Symphony’s artistic advisor, Joseph Horowitz. Tickets are $25-$109; for more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit PacificSymphony.org. “For this Music Unwound program, we wanted to bring to light the fascinating world of Spanish flamenco, which influenced the works of composers Rodrigo and de Falla, as well as Spain’s most famous poet, Lorca,” says St.Clair. “This powerful poetry provides an opportunity for us to delve into his world of words through our world of music. The way Bill Bolcom paints the sonic picture is just marvelous and points to his genius of combining the two art forms.” The concert opens with Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez,” a musical portrait of the gardens at the Palace of Aranjuez, 26 miles south of Madrid. He described the concerto as capturing “the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains” at the Palace. The work is enriched with nuances of flamenco’s cante jondo, or “deep song,” and the finale evokes a courtly dance. The middle movement has become familiar to many because of its many adaptations—one of the most famous being the version by Miles Davis in his album, “Sketches of Spain.” It’s remarkable to note that the composer was blind by the age of 3 (he composed in braille), and although he is praised for giving the guitar a place of dignity in the concerto repertoire, he himself was a pianist and never

mastered the guitar. Of the evening’s soloist, Yang, Gramophone wrote, “the guitar world has a new star.” Born in Beijing, she was the first guitarist in China to enter a music school (Beijing’s Central Conservatoire of Music), and became the first Chinese guitarist to launch an international professional career. Her first public appearance was at the age of 10 and received such acclaim that the Spanish ambassador in China immediately presented her with a concert guitar. Her debut in Madrid at the age of 14 was attended by the composer Rodrigo and, when guitarist John Williams heard her play, he gave two of his own instruments to Beijing’s Central Conservatoire especially for her and other advanced students. She then went on to become the first Chinese student to be awarded a full post-graduate scholarship to study at London’s Royal Academy of Music. In recognition of her distinguished career, Yang was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Music in June 2012. “‘Canciones de Lorca’ was so well received at the opening of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, when Plácido Domingo was the soloist, that I wanted to bring the songs back, record them and release them on a CD with Bill’s other work we commissioned, ‘Prometheus,’ as a 75th birthday gift,” says St.Clair. Tenor Barbera, a graduate of Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Patick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center, has swiftly established himself as a young artist on the rise. At Plácido Domingo’s Operalia 2011 in Moscow, he was awarded First Prize for Opera, First Prize for Zarzuela and the Audience Prize. He is the first artist to be the sole recipient of all three awards since the competition began in 1993. Earlier in the summer of 2011, he triumphed as Tonio in “The Daughter of the Regiment” for Opera Theatre

of St. Louis. Of his performance, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said, “Tenor René Barbera…has a thrilling voice… His account of ‘Ah! mes amis’—the one with the famous nine high Cs— was tossed off with such apparent ease that some might wonder what all the fuss is about.” Mezzo-soprano Rafało, a rising star, has a voice that the Palm Beach Arts Paper called “attractive, dusky and powerful.” Her rich voice and dramatic sensibility lent themselves perfectly to the sumptuous roles of Carmen, Eboli in “Don Carlo,” Amneris in “Aida,” and Dalila in “Samson et Dalila.” Rafało has coached with opera greats such as Sherrill Milnes, Tito Capobianco, Fabrizio Melano and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. In 2008, she was awarded Grand Prize of the Elgin Opera competition and First Prize of the Sherrill Milnes Opera Idol competition. She was also an apprentice artist at Sarasota Opera, receiving the Leo M. Rogers award, as well as an apprentice at Opera Tampa. Now entering its fifth season, Music Unwound is a series of three concerts, underwritten by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, that bring innovative new formats and thematic programming to the concert experience. By creating contextual backdrops, the Symphony endeavors to give the music deeper meaning. Other Music Unwound concerts in the 2013-14 season include “Toradze Plays Shostakovich” (Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2014) and “Carmina Burana” (June 5-7, 2014). Pacific Symphony’s Classical series performances are made possible by the Hal and Jeanette Segerstrom Family Foundation with additional support from American Airlines, The Westin South Coast Plaza, KUSC and PBS SoCal. The Boeing Company is the concert sponsor for the Oct. 25 performance.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 12-0027001. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
