Tips to help you shop smarter this holiday season The holiday season is all about celebrating with family and friends, which means more merry-making, staying organized and enjoying the time spent shopping for the perfect gifts. A smart shopper is able to access and keep organized great deals and discounts, reduce time with online shopping and check for last-minute opinions if absolutely necessary. To help be a smarter shopper this holiday season, consider putting these tips to use: * Keep the deals and discounts organized - At this time of year, everyone’s inbox is flooded with promotions with varying expiration dates. Holiday-themed emails began filling inboxes across the country starting mid-October, and will continue to increase over the next two months, according to an Experian study. Being able to train your inbox to manage these promotions for you will help save time while online shopping. Outlook.com has a sweep feature that allows users to move everything from a particular sender to a single folder with a quick push of a button, and then delete everything except the most recent communications. In a matter

of seconds, the hundreds of holiday deals clogging your inbox are sorted and deleted except for the deals you need in order to receive a discount on your online purchase. More than half of holiday shoppers will shop online this season, according to the National Retail Federation, but you’ll be ahead of the game with your promotions organized for quick access. * Make certain your online shopping is secure - Identity theft is a big concern during the holiday season, and keeping your credit card and account information secure should be a priority, especially when shopping online. Start first with the Internet browser you’re using. Internet Explorer 11 is the most secure browser among its competitors, according to NSS Labs. By keeping your browser and other software updated you’ll have the most upto-date security protection on your computer. Also, when shopping, make certain you’re on a secure site. The SmartScreen Filter on Internet Explorer 11 helps warn you about unsafe sites before you share your account information with people who could misuse it. * Share your wish lists - Many

families create wish lists to help in finding the perfect gift for each recipient - you wouldn’t want anyone receiving another fruit cake! But sometimes a typed list doesn’t convey the full idea of exactly what you’re looking for. Use visuals to remove any confusion about what you really want by uploading and sharing a photo wish list on SkyDrive. That way, you know the wish list will always be with you through the cloud. * Get a last-minute opinion Sometimes the shopping list fails or you’re in need of an urgent gift, and find yourself in a crowded store faced with a gift dilemma. Grab a second

opinion with a friend or family member using Skype on your phone. You can use both video calls and messages to communicate your quandary, and quickly arrive at a mutual agreement, allowing you to finish your shopping and enjoy the rest of the holiday season. Smart shopping helps remove stress from the holiday season, and you can accomplish your shopping to-do list much more efficiently. You’ll soon discover you have free time to hang out with friends and family more often and really enjoy the holiday season.

Mission Hospital Receives a $10 Million gift The largest gift to directly support Mission Hospital Laguna Beach emergency room services will fund expansion and technology enhancements. After months of thoughtful consideration, local philanthropists Sue and Bill Gross have donated $10 million to Mission Hospital Laguna Beach. In recognition of this generous gift, Mission Hospital is honored to name the Laguna Beach Emergency Department - The Sue and Bill Gross Emergency Department at Mission Hospital Laguna Beach. Sue and Bill Gross’ Spirit of Giving will allow Mission Hospital Laguna Beach to implement a comprehensive plan that includes new imaging technologies, expanded and enhanced facilities, and the provision of emergency support services to ensure sustainability for generations to come. This gift will support the hospital’s mission to extend the healing ministry of Jesus in the tradition of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange by continually improving the health and quality of life of people in the communities we serve. “I am inspired and humbled by the philanthropic leadership and compassion of Sue and Bill Gross,” said Kenneth D. McFarland, president and chief executive officer of Mission Hospital. “Their incredibly generous gift will have an immediate and substantial impact on the delivery of exceptional health care in Laguna Beach and the surrounding communities.” Mission Hospital acquired the Laguna Beach hospital just over five years ago (known then as South Coast Medical Center) and saved the vital

community hospital from closure. Serving an average of 12,000 patients per year, the Laguna Beach Emergency Department is critical to the safety and well-being of Laguna Beach residents. With 24/7 access, it is the only Emergency Department in close proximity to provide services for the people who live, work and vacation in our coastal communities. “Laguna Beach is our home and we wanted to help ensure that our community has access to emergency services locally,” shared Sue Gross, President of the Gross Family Foundation. “We feel privileged to have an opportunity to partner with Mission Hospital Laguna Beach and to help care for our community.” mission4health.com 27700 Medical Center Road • Mission Viejo, CA 92691 Foundation Telephone: (949) 364-7783 A Ministry founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange The need for advanced imaging technology is critical in caring for emergency medicine patients. The Gross’ gift will fund imaging enhancements that will enrich patient comfort and convenience, promote optimal healing and augment the efficiency of treatment. In addition to technology upgrades, the Emergency Department will be reconfigured to accommodate higher volumes of patients with varying degrees of illness and injury. Individual treatment areas will be created to increase the functional space via protective walls that maintain patient privacy. “Mission Hospital is honored to be the recipient

of such a historic gift,” said McFarland. “Sue and Bill Gross are transforming the landscape of health care in south Orange County and inspiring others to invest in our future. Their gift brings us even closer to completing Mission Hospital’s $200 million comprehensive campaign.” The comprehensive campaign focuses on four strategic areas of growth: advanced technology and facilities to support our various centers of excellence, nursing excellence to benefit training and education, community benefit programs for the underserved and healthy community initiatives, and endowment to sustain our future in clinical excellence. Think outside the chocolate box when hosting a holiday cookie exchange The holidays provide a good excuse to bake and eat cookies. Not the traditional chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies that most of us eat during the rest of the year, but those special recipes that have everyone going back for a second taste. Hosting a cookie exchange is a great way to expose your friends to a wider variety of cookie recipes this holiday season. But before sending out invitations and asking your friends to make their favorite cookie recipe, consider thinking outside the chocolate box for your party this year. There are tons of ways to make your cookie exchange party unique. Start planning your party right away using a couple of these ideas. * Make it a themed cookie exchange. Theme parties are fun at any time of year, but take it one step further with your cookie exchange. Invite your guests to follow the theme with the recipes they choose to make. For example, consider hosting a black and white cookie party, explaining to attendees that the cookies must have a black or white element. Coconut, white or dark chocolate candies, nuts and sugar for icing are just several ingredients that fit the bill, and you can find dozens of recipes featuring these items. Or make it a chocolate party, where all of the recipes have a Page 4

chocolate ingredient in them. Many cookie recipes include nuts, so a nut theme would also be a great idea. In addition to the recipes featuring the theme, also decorate the party room to match. In need of a recipe? The following white chocolate crunch recipe is great for all three themed parties: Hawaiian Host Whole Macadamia White Chocolate Crunch Ingredients: 1 box, 7 ounces, 18 pieces Hawaiian Host Whole Macadamia White Chocolates 1 cup Rice Krispies 1 cup mini marshmallows 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter Directions: Melt chocolate in a microwave oven in 4 quart casserole at 70 percent power for 3 - 4 minutes, stirring periodically, until melted. Stir in peanut butter. Add corn cereal and marshmallows; stir. Pour into buttered 8-by-8 inch square pan or dish. When firm, cut into squares. * Up the game on the party favors. The purpose of a cookie exchange is to leave the party with a variety of holiday cookies, but you and your guests can have a lot more fun. Ways to think outside the chocolate box include holding a wine pairing with the cookies. Red wine and chocolate go well together, and your guests can

The Ladera Ranch News

determine which pairing works best for their holiday tables. Or indulge by serving some chocolate martinis alongside the cookies. If your group is into games, make up fun names for the cookie recipes everyone brought, or make a unique recipe just for the party, and have guests guess the ingredients in the mystery cookie. * Introduce unexpected ingredients into the cookie recipes. One of the holiday season’s most popular confections is Hawaiian Host chocolate-covered macadamia nuts that tempt frequent snacking all season long. But chopping up these chocolate-covered nuts and putting them into a cookie recipe will introduce a new surprise to all your guests. Try them in the following butter cookie recipe: Hawaiian Host Milk Chocolate AlohaMac Butter Cookies Ingredients: 14 pieces Hawaiian Host Milk Chocolate AlohaMacs, chop into pieces 1/2 cup butter, unsalted 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup light brown sugar, granulated 1 large egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/4 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix butter and sugars in large bowl until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat, then add vanilla extract. Mix flour, salt and soda, and add gradually to butter mixture. Fold in chocolate pieces. Drop rounded spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake 8 - 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until light brown. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes. Then place on a wire rack to cool completely. Hosting a cookie exchange is a lot of fun, and when you think outside the chocolate box, you can take the fun to a whole new level. So start planning your party, find some unique cookie recipes and get started with your holiday baking. Easy and beautiful holiday looks for the everyday woman Feeling your best during the holiday season helps make celebrating that much more meaningful. When you look beautiful, your confidence and charisma can shine, whether at a work party or a family gathering. You don’t have to dress like a fashion model to have a festive look, simply remember these fashion tricks and trends for a gorgeous, comfortable appearance no matter what you’re celebrating: Accessorize - Just as the holiday lights sparkle, so too should your accessories. This is the perfect time of year to use your costume jewelry to jazz up any outfit. Pair a statement necklace with a simple blouse for a cheerful look. Heading outdoors? Broaches are back - so pin that sparkler to your jacket collar or to your knit hat for a little extra pizzazz. Denim - You can’t go wrong with a great pair of jeans. Be sure to choose a pair that complements your best features, like dENiZEN (R) from the Levi’s (R) brand, which is sold exclusively at Target, includes a line for curvy gals. Being fashionable doesn’t mean being uncomfortable: with their innovative Essential Stretch fabrication, their denim is 40 percent more stretchable, plus it will maintain its shape and soft feel for all-day comfort. Whether you’re heading to an ice rink or a restaurant, pair dENiZEN jeans with a cable-knit sweater for a wonderful winter outfit. Blazers - Blazers are back and ideal for winter weather. A classic tweed blazer makes for memorable

holiday attire when paired with stylish jeans, or jazz up a houndstooth blazer with black slacks and a cashmere scarf. Not only will you have cool style fitting for women of every generation, but you’ll also have an extra layer to block the chill of Old Man Winter. Sweaters - Perhaps no other piece of clothing embraces the feeling of the holidays better than a great sweater. Chunky knits and cowl necks are big, proving a warm sweater has its place in everyone’s closet. Take queues from the traditional holiday hues and wear a sweater in ruby red, emerald green or rich metallics. Pair with leggings and boots and you’re ready to hit the town. Black jeans - Switch out your LBD (little black dress) for the LBJ (little black jean)! You can rock them by day with a blazer to the office, or with a feminine frock for an office happy hour by night. One look that is great to experiment with over the holidays is a twist to the woman’s tuxedo. Take a pair of black skinny jeans, like the ones from dENiZEN(R) from the Levi’s(R) brand. Wear with a tuxedo jacket, a black blouse, bowtie and satin stilettos for a look that will turn heads all night. Textures - An easy way to breathe new life into your closet is by thinking outside the box and matching pieces you normally wouldn’t pair together. Blending textures is a great way to create new outfits - pair a silky shirt with a twill scarf, an angora sweater with a leather skirt, or those funky boots with a conservative cardigan.

You’ll be surprised at the new looks that can be inspired. Makeup - The holidays are the perfect reason for playing up your makeup routine. Whether you rarely wear makeup or you have an extensive daily routine, hit up your favorite retail store and treat yourself to a few new products. Nothing says “mistletoe-ready” better than red lips, but the shade is glamorous on nails, too. For eyes, metals are trending. If the idea of gold or silver on your lids intimidates you, just dab a bit on the inside corner of your eyes for a little touch of shimmer. The perfect holiday outfit isn’t something to fret over. Celebrate all the good tidings of the season and feel great in an outfit that looks great while letting your personal style shine through.

LOCAL DENtISt DR. MICHAEL tESSIER REVEALS tHE SECREtS OF OVERLY SENSItIVE tEEtH A patient of long-standing came in s e v e r a l weeks ago, complaining that her teeth were sensitive, generally, all over mouth. When I visually Dr. Michael Tessier inspected her mouth, there was no evidence of cracked teeth, or tired-old fillings, or bad crowns, or gum recession- all the usual suspects. There was nothing that I could see that might contribute to tooth sensitivity. We treated the sensitive teeth on the right wide with the laser. When she came back two weeks later, she said that she couldn’t wait to have me do the left side, because all the sensitivity was gone on the right side. Positively amazing. So, when you eat ice cream, or drink a margarita, one of your molars, or maybe even a bicuspid, is sensitive. When you take that problem tooth to your friendly, neighborhood dentist, and he says you need that tooth capped (or crowned). What’s that about? When someone drills on a crystalline structure, like glass, or porcelain, or tooth enamel, the heat of friction from the drilling device puts microscopic fractures in the material. When a dentist has to put a big filling in a tooth, those little fractures pre-dispose that tooth to further fracture. The fractures

virtually split the tooth. Later, after years of chewing trauma, the nerve becomes irritated from this microscopic splitting during chewing or clenching. This hypersensitivity is usually manifested as temperature sensitivity. Just replacing the filling doesn’t help because the cracks are already there. A crown, on the other hand, holds the tooth together, like the band on a barrel, so the splitting activity stops. If the trauma to the nerve of the tooth didn’t damage that nerve irreparably, which would necessitate a root canal (removing the damaged nerve from the root of the tooth), a crown is all that’s necessary to allow you to return to the pleasures of ice cream-eating. There are also instances where a tooth is sensitive to cold or even sweets, and a fracture is not the culprit. This is most often a result of root sensitivity, where the root of the tooth is exposed due to gum recession. There is also a setting on my soft-tissue laser (Periolase) for treating teeth that are cold sensitive due to root sensitivity. Dr. Tessier says “If this article brings forward a question, please call me and we can chat. Consultation appointments are always complimentary. Please don’t hesitate to call my office if you have any questions about this process, or any other of the modern technologies we can use to make your smile whiter and your day better.” Dr. Michael Tessier is located in Los Flores plaza at 28562 Oso Parkway. Most major credit cards and dental plans are cheerfully accepted. Telephone (949)459 -7212

MORE THAN A PIPE DREAM! PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S ANNUAL “HOLIDAY ORGAN SPECTACULAR” FEATURES CHRISTMAS FAVORITES

Feel the joy and majesty of the holidays through the mighty sounds and vibrations of the William J. Gillespie Concert Organ during Pacific Symphony’s annual “Holiday Organ Spectacular.” The color, beauty and versatility of the organ is showcased in partnership with voice and other solo instruments to bring out the best of treasured Christmas classics. Todd Wilson, curator of the E.M. Skinner pipe organ at Severance Hall and one of the highest-regarded concert organists across the world today, returns with a thrilling mix of classical and popular Christmas carols, including Bach’s “In dulci jubilo” and “Two Chorale Preludes.” Praised for her “exquisite voice, clarity and range” (Harold Prince), soprano Lisa Vroman, who starred for several years on Broadway as Christine Daae in “The Phantom of the Opera,” is featured throughout the program in “Ave Maria,” “O Holy Night,” “Candlelight Carol,” “The Christmas Song” and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” Adding yet more color and zest to the organ’s palette are the Symphony’s principal musicians Rose Corrigan, bassoon; Barry Perkins, trumpet (playing piccolo/ petite trumpet); and Mindy Ball, harp. Taking place Tuesday, Dec. 16, at

7:30 p.m., this concert launches the 2014-15 Pedals and Pipes series, which spotlights the $3.1 million concert organ created by C.B. Fisk— the visual focal point of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. For more information or to purchase tickets ($15-$75), call (714) 7555799 or visit www.PacificSymphony. org. “[Todd Wilson is]... a fabulous virtuoso with fleet feet, a prodigious memory and technique to burn.” — The Plain Dealer. “We have a wonderful variety of music on this year’s program, ranging from Bach to seasonal favorites like ‘O Holy Night’ and ‘Sleigh Ride,’” says Wilson. “We also have some new arrangements being created especially for this concert. I look forward especially to the arrangement of ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,’ featuring the bassoon as Grinch. It promises to be great fun!” An acoustic delight, this performance features beloved Christmas songs that warm the heart and create the feeling of good cheer. “The First Noel,” “Little Drummer Boy” and “I Saw Three Ships,” are included, as well as two chances for the audience to sing along to the songs, “The Holly and the Ivy,” “Deck the Halls,” “Silent Night” and “Joy to

the World.” Wilson also performs Garth Edmundson’s Toccata on “Vom Himmel Hoch” and Pastorale and Dance by Craig Phillips. “I enjoy this concert year after year because of the special opportunity to collaborate with some of the outstanding musicians of Pacific Symphony, and to play a magnificent organ in a beautiful concert hall,” says Wilson. Setting “the gold standard by which others are measured” (The American Organist), Wilson is acclaimed internationally for his virtuosity. Wilson is head of the organ department at The Cleveland Institute of Music and director of music and worship at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Cleveland. He also serves as house organist for the newly restored Aeolian organ at the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron, Ohio. He has performed in major cities throughout the United States, Europe and Japan, including concerts at Symphony Hall in Birmingham, U.K., Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Severance Hall in Cleveland, Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas and Uihlein Hall in Milwaukee. His latest CDs on the JAV label feature a live recital of American music from the National Cathedral

in Washington, D.C. and “Live from Severance Hall,” a concert of music for trumpet and organ. Establishing herself as one of America’s most versatile voices, Vroman garnered Theatre Critic’s awards for her role in “The Phantom of the Opera” during a recordbreaking run in San Francisco, and she also had a return engagement at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. In 2008, Vroman made her Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops, starred as Lili Vanessi in “Kiss Me Kate” with Glimmerglass Opera, sang the role of Birdie in “Regina” with Utah Opera, made her New Jersey Opera debut as Rosalinda in “Die Fledermaus,” and premiered two comic operas by composers John Musto and William Bolcom with the New York Festival of Song. She is a frequent guest soloist with major theatre and opera companies as well as orchestras. Pedals and Pipes continues on March 8, 2015, with an organ recital by Hector Olivera. On April 26, 2015, Dennis James returns for another silent film revival, as he performs the soundtrack to Charlie Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush.” This series is generously sponsored by the official vehicle, Mercedes Benz, Avenue of the Arts Wyndham Hotel and PBS SoCal.

Skating4Capes Recognizes Young Superheroes

Holidays on Ice Mission Viejo Partners With Nonprofit to Raise Spirits & Funds Holidays on Ice Mission Viejo is partnering with Capes4Heroes this holiday season to make a difference in the lives of children battling lifethreatening illnesses and disabilities. The outdoor ice rink will host the fundraiser “Skating4Capes” on Saturday, December 13, from 11 a.m to 1 p.m. All proceeds from the ticket sales between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., plus a raffle will benefit Capes4Heroes. Prices are $17 per adult, $10 per child accompanied by a paid adult or $14 per child under 14 years of age. The local ice rink, which is located at The Shops in Mission Viejo (between Macy’s and Farrell’s Restaurant), is also offering children who are battling cancer free admission during the event (limited to the first 25 children who attend with a paying adult). Those 25 children will also receive their own superhero cape to showcase their strength while battling a disease. Capes4Heroes, a 501c3 charity based in the Bay Area, presents superhero capes to children dealing with life-threatening illnesses, disabilities or life struggles to help them showcase their strength and courage. The handmade capes are presented to children at hospitals,

Ronald McDonald Houses and camps throughout the United States. The co-owner of Holidays on Ice Mission Viejo, Richard Yakkey, was first introduced to the non-profit organization when his niece Audrey Davis received her own superhero cape a couple years ago. Audrey was diagnosed with brain cancer at only 13 months of age, and her family was fearful she would not live to see her second birthday. While staying at the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford, Audrey received her handmade superhero cape from Capes4Heroes. According to her family, the cape made her feel safe and gave her a sense of calmness in a chaotic setting. It allowed her to smile and be a kid – not just a cancer patient. Today, Audrey is four years old. After 33 rounds of intense chemotherapy, numerous infections, dehydration and several month-long stays in the hospital, Audrey is considered cancer free. Her spirits are high and she is enjoying typical childhood experiences. “We want to help Capes4Heroes empower even more children who are facing illness and painful treatments,” said Yakkey. “What better way to celebrate the holiday season than to

provide the joy of ice skating along with a superhero cape to children experiencing a painful illness. I can’t wait to see the smiles on the children’s faces – while at the same time, raising money for an organization who is touching these children’s lives in such a positive way.” “It is amazing how something so simple as a cape can have such a profound impact,” says Barbara Casados, Capes4Heroes Founder. “It really gives one a sense of hope, courage and so much more. I never get used to the reaction of the children when they receive their very own superhero cape. It just lifts them up and takes them out of the pain they have been suffering.” Capes4Heroes Founder Barbara Casados and her team of volunteers continue to be the driving force of the organization. Their goal: to recognize and empower children, to make them smile and show them that they are the true superheroes. To date, they have distributed more than 5,000 capes in California and beyond. In addition to distributing capes at hospitals and camps, Capes4Heroes also finds deserving children and generous sponsors through Facebook and their website. Anyone interested in sponsoring an individual cape or

becoming a corporate sponsor can visit www.capes4heroes.org and www.facebook.com/capes4heroes. Capes4Heroes is a Danvillebased 501c3 non-profit that presents superhero capes to children dealing with life-threatening illnesses, disabilities or life struggles to help them showcase their strength and courage. To date, Capes4Heroes has distributed custom capes to more than 5,000 brave children throughout the country. ‘Tis the season to entertain: A simple guide to artisanal wine and cheese pairings Planning a get together with close friends or family this holiday season and fretting over what to serve? Regardless of theme or guest list, a delicious artisanal cheese and wine platter is a great way to start off any gathering. By following these simple guidelines, creating the perfect pairings can be one of the simplest things on your to-do list this holiday season. Step 1: Vary your cheese choices Lindsey Jessup, cheese and wine pairing expert and wine ambassador for Bridlewood Estate Winery, suggests that balancing a variety of flavors is a good place to start. The key is creating a diverse platter that offers something for all your guests to enjoy. “Contrast your tastes and textures by offering a number of different cheeses,” suggests Jessup. “By balancing the different flavors, you’ll have a dynamic and complete holiday cheese plate that can be the perfect complement to your wine selections.” Jessup recommends a selection of four cheeses to build a crowdpleasing and wine-friendly cheese plate: an aged, hard-rind cheese, a soft-ripened cheese, a blue cheese and a mild cow’s milk cheese.

Step 2: Select your wine Along with a variety of cheeses, consider the range of wine options to offer your guests. A good rule of thumb is to have at least two red options and two white options to match the versatility of your cheese selections. If you are offering artisanal cheeses, balance them with handcrafted wines. “Bridlewood’s critically acclaimed Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Blend 175 and Cabernet Sauvignon display unique, adventurous, yet approachable flavors that make a perfect accompaniment for artisanal cheeses during the holidays and beyond,” adds Jessup. Step 3: Begin pairing Personal preference plays a large role in all wine pairings. In general, Jessup recommends some general guidelines when pairing artisanal cheeses and wine: * Mild and hard cheeses match a wider range of wines than soft, ripe or mature cheeses. * White wine may pair more easily with a wider range of cheeses. * More tannic red wines pair better with harder cheeses. Step 4: Set up the display Now that you have the cheese and the wine, don’t forget the

presentation. First and foremost, it is important to serve your cheese at room temperature to maximize flavor profiles. Be sure to take the cheeses out of the refrigerator at least one to two hours before guests arrive. When considering layout, place cheeses from mild to strongest and accent them with colorful fresh and dried fruit, artisanal breads, and nuts. When displaying the cheese, pre-cut some while leaving larger pieces for a backdrop and have a dedicated knife for each option. Once your cheese is laid out,

place your selected wine pairing next to each cheese option along with enough stemware for guests. Keep the white wine on ice so that it’s appropriately chilled throughout the evening. Whether you are planning a large party or a more intimate gathering, creating a simple and elegant artisanal cheese and wine platter is a delicious way to create a memorable and enjoyable experience this holiday season. Party-planning tips to make a happy host Every host knows the elements of a great party fantastic food and beverages, just the right balance of sophistication and fun, and decor that speaks to the season and theme of your soiree. In the right combination, those ingredients ensure guests will have a great time. But what about your good time? Staging a party should be every bit as sweet for you as attending it is for your guests. As your celebration plans rev up, follow these simple steps to ensure your party-prep is both fun and effortless: * Go with what you know. Sure, sampling new dishes can be fun and you can introduce a few unfamiliar dishes to your party menu. But for sure-fire success, stick with what guests know and love - and do the familiar with flare. Familiar, traditional and simple are just fine, as long as what you’re serving - hors d’oeuvres to dessert - is palate-pleasing. * Plan one show-stopping experience for your party guests. Host a wine tasting event by pairing your favorite varietals with a selection of premium dark chocolates, like Lindt EXCELLENCE dark chocolate diamonds. Individually wrapped and available in four distinct flavors, these chocolates lend themselves to an array of wine pairings. Try serving Lindt EXCELLENCE A Touch of Sea Salt with a Pinot Noir or EXCELLENCE Intense Orange with a Chardonnay. * Make prep manageable. If you’re rushing to do everything the night before or the day of the party, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed - and make mistakes. Look for ways to minimize day-of prep, such as

making and freezing a batch of appetizers the week before, or tackling house-cleaning bit by bit over the few days leading up to the event. The day before, take care of set-up by placing decorations and arranging furniture to facilitate conversation and a clear path to the food table. * End the evening on a high note. Give your guests something to savor and enjoy on the way home by offering each a parting favor. Individually wrapped treats such as the premium Lindt EXCELLENCE chocolate diamonds say “sophistication” and “’til we meet again” far better than a hasty

hug at the door. Consider placing the individually wrapped chocolate in small mesh bags tied with colored silk ribbons. Place the bags on a decorative tray by the door at the end of your night to ensure that every guest leaves your party with a memorable token.Celebrations should be fun for everyone - the hosts as well as the guests. You can maximize your party enjoyment and create a memorable event for guests by keeping things simple, planning ahead and serving familiar favorites with flare and fun.

Angelitos de Oro Raises $300,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters With the sole purpose of raising funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County’s “High School Bigs” mentoring program, Angelitos de Oro, a Newport Beach-based volunteer women’s auxiliary group, raised $300,000 for the nonprofit during its 13th annual Angelitos Card fashion fundraiser at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. Angelitos de Oro has donated more than $5M to the nonprofit since the auxiliary’s inception in 1961. “Angelitos de Oro is a deeply valued supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, and we are so grateful for their continued commitment to our vision that every child should have the opportunity to succeed in life and live up to their full potential,” said Melissa Beck, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. “The 2014 Angelitos Card program was another amazing success and we thank the Angelitos for putting on this fantastic annual fashion fundraiser to benefit at-risk youth.” A partnership between Angelitos de Oro and South Coast Plaza, the Angelitos Card program consisted of more than 100 boutiques and restaurants at South Coast Plaza who offered a 20% saving to Angelitos cardholders for one week. Stores that participated in the Angelitos Card fundraiser included Bottega Veneta, Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, St. John, Giorgio Armani, Saint Laurent, Anne Fontaine, M.Missoni, J.Crew, DKNY and TOD’s. The card was sold for $60, and all proceeds benefited the nonprofit. A Preview Day event was held October 7 in South Coast Plaza’s Jewel Court, where fall fashion trends were presented by participating luxury boutiques, including Bottega Veneta, Donna Karan and M.Missoni, champagne and a light lunch were served, and Card holders learned more about how Angelitos de Oro’s generous contributions support the important mentorship programs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County provides in the community to at-risk youth. All boutiques participating in Preview Day generously donated 10% of their sales proceeds that day to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. Angelitos de Oro raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County’s “High School Bigs” program, which matches a volunteer high school “Big” with an elementary school “Little” and once a week after school the “Bigs” provide age-appropriate peer-to-peer mentoring. The program is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year and served 590 elementary and middle school students in 2013. The nonprofit has found a significant decrease in truancy as well as increased academic performance as a result of the program. A Tustin-based nonprofit organization that helps youth to realize their potential and build their futures, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County provides over 2,400 children facing adversity with professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships to change their lives for the better. Youth (“Littles”) are matched with volunteer mentors (“Bigs”) to develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on their lives, with results including: in 2013-2014, 98% of “Littles” graduated high school on time, with 70% of “Littles” being the first in their family to receive a high school diploma. More so, 83% of “Littles” enrolled in college and 100% said their “Big” was their biggest influence to pursue a higher education for a better future. For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters live in single-parent and low-income families, or households where a parent is incarcerated. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”). Providing a system of ongoing evaluation and support, Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven by independent studies to help families by improving the odds that “Littles” will perform better in school and avoid violence and illegal activities, and have stronger relationships with their parents and others. Headquartered in Dallas with a network of nearly 400 agencies across the country, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves a quarter million children annually. In 2013, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County served over 2,400 children. To learn more about Angelitos de Oro, visit angelitosdeoro.org. For more information, visit www.bigbrooc.org. Page 12

Delectable: A Wine App That Could Revolutionize Drinking HAPPY GRAPES

By David White Alexander Niehenke began to appreciate wine ten years ago. But for the first four years, it was simply a beverage he enjoyed with dinner from time to time, especially when cooking at home. And then he put his nose in a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon from Justin, a winery based in Paso Robles, California. He was at a bachelor party, where few attendees were paying any attention to the wine inside their glasses. But for Niehenke, the aromas were intoxicating. Something clicked. So he promptly dove into the world of wine. For the next five years, Niehenke’s passion for wine grew steadily and predictably. As a resident of San Francisco, weekend trips to Napa

Valley and Sonoma were easy -- so he started driving north regularly. He began attending tastings, reading wine publications, and even collecting. And then he discovered Delectable, a mobile wine app. Since downloading the program last fall, Niehenke has been moving towards oenophilia at lightning speed. “The app has taught me about new producers, new regions, and even new varieties,” he explained. “I actually just learned about orange wine -- and tried my first one -- thanks to it.” An orange wine is made by treating white wine grapes as if they’re red -- in other words, soaking the skins and seeds alongside the juice during fermentation. Orange wines have become quite popular among some of the nation’s hippest sommeliers, and thanks to Delectable, Niehenke can see what those sommeliers are opening each night. Delectable traces its roots to 2011, when Alex Fishman was working in Dubai for Palantir, the data analytics firm best known for its work with the U.S. intelligence community. Shortly before returning home, Fishman and his girlfriend came upon a wine they’d enjoyed on many occasions. Wanting

to remember the bottle so they could purchase it in the United States, they looked to the label for information -- but were overwhelmed. Fishman recalled this experience a few months later over breakfast with in New York with Aaron Vanderbeek, a video-game designer. The two were old friends, and Fishman was detailing his desire to launch a mission-focused company -- ideally, one that would “make the world a more delicious place.” In short order, they realized that there weren’t any good mobile apps for wine enthusiasts. So Fishman and Vanderbeek began building Delectable. Today, the app identifies all a wine’s details from a photo and allows users to review and purchase wines. It also helps users discover industry professionals -- winemakers, sommeliers, and critics -- and see what they’re drinking. It’s no wonder why Delectable has been described as “the Instagram of wine.” Thanks in large part to this feature, Delectable could revolutionize consumption. As Fishman told me, “the wine market is broken because of a lack of information. That’s why consumers buy points. But the point system is flawed because people have

radically different tastes.” As consumers discover other enthusiasts on Delectable with similar tastes, they’ll discover new wines worth drinking. After all, it doesn’t make any sense to take the advice of a critic who has slapped “98 points!” on a bottle unless one shares that critic’s preferences. Delectable solves what Fishman calls “the matching problem” consumers face with wine critics. Niehenke is certainly drinking better thanks to the app. “When looking for new wines, I used to call my knowledgeable friends. Now, I can just open up Delectable to see what they’re drinking,” he explained. “When I realized I could follow pros, too, wow -- that was cool. I love seeing what my favorite winemakers -- people like Ross Cobb and Cathy Corison -- are drinking. Now, I follow people with similar palates to mine and un-follow people with different tastes.” Fishman is convinced that his app will fulfill its mission. “If we do this right,” he concluded, “the amount of global happiness that’s derived from wine will go up. People will drink better and better wines, since our suggestions will be tailored to individual users.”

Your go-to guide for elevator and escalator safety during the holidays Remember the scene in Home Alone where the family is rushing through the crowded airport? Or images of teeming crowds in a shopping mall, every arm holding countless packages? Well ... it’s that time of year again! November and December are arguably the busiest months of the year for traveling and shopping. Millions of people descend on the nation’s airports and shopping centers looking to create that perfect holiday memory. With all the excitement surrounding this time of year, the last thing Americans should worry about is escalator and elevator safety while navigating through the crowds. But while you may be more focused on your holiday to-do’s, you need to remember some important safety tips about the elevators and escalators you are using. Safety innovations have come a long way in the last few decades and today’s elevators and escalators are safer than ever before. The National Elevator Industry, Inc. (NEII) is the expert in building transportation safety. NEII works to develop and promote updated safety codes, encourage the adaptation of the latest safety technologies, and ensure passengers are informed on the safest riding procedures for elevators and escalators. However, even with all the advancements in safety technology, it’s worth keeping in mind that most accidents can be easily prevented by following simple elevator and escalator safety tips. Below are key Page 14

guidelines proven to keep riders safe during the holiday season and any time throughout the year: When boarding and riding elevators: * Allow passengers exiting the elevator to clear before boarding * Watch your step - the elevator car may not be perfectly level with the floor * Stand clear of the doors - keep clothes and carry-ons away from the opening * Hold children and pets firmly * Leashed pets should be on the same side of the door as the passenger to prevent the door from closing on the leash * Passengers nearest to the doors should enter first when the car arrives * Push and hold the “door open” button if doors need to be held open, or ask someone to push the button for you * Never try to stop a closing door, wait for the next car * Once on board, quickly press the button for your floor and move to the back of the car to make room for other passengers * Hold the rail or stand against the wall, if available * Pay attention to the floor indications and announcements when provided * If the doors do not open when the elevator stops, push the “door open” button If there is ever an emergency, remember that all elevators have several safety devices, one of which is brakes that will stop the car if it is not operating properly. If the elevator

The Ladera Ranch News

should ever stop between floors, do not panic. Follow these guidelines: * If the elevator should ever stop between floors, do not panic, there is plenty of air in the elevator * Never climb out of a stalled elevator * Use the “alarm” or “help” button, the telephone or the intercom to call for assistance * Above all, wait for qualified help to arrive and never try to leave an elevator that has not stopped normally * Emergency lighting will come on in the event of a power failure When entering escalators: * Watch the direction of the moving step and step on and off with extra care * Hold children firmly with one arm or hold child’s free hand * Hold small packages firmly in one hand, but always leave one hand available to hold the handrail * Grasp the handle as you step onto the moving step * Do not step onto an escalator going in the opposite direction * Do not take wheelchairs, electric scooters, strollers, hand carts, luggage carts or similar items on the escalator When riding and exiting escalators: * Keep loose clothing clear of steps and sides * Wear closed-toed and hard-soled shoes, and avoid wearing footwear made of soft-resin or other rubbery materials * Stand clear and keep feet clear of the sides of the escalator

* Face forward and keep firm grip on the handrail * Reposition your hand slowly if the handrail moves ahead or behind the steps * Don’t climb onto or ride the handrail * Do not let children sit on steps or stand too close to sides * Don’t hesitate and step off promptly * Make sure to step over the comb fingers; don’t let your feet slide off the end of the escalator * Immediately move clear of the escalator exit area; don’t stop to talk or look around since other passengers may be behind you Always remember, if there is an emergency, simply push one of the “stop” buttons located at the top or bottom landings of the escalator near the handrail or floor level. For more detailed information about elevator and escalator safety, visit the NEII website at www.neii.org.

8-Time Olympic Medalist Jason Lezak to Light Fashion Island’s Huge Friendship Menorah Hanukah - The Festival of Lights - for many of us brings back fond memories of childhood years, and serves to renew our sense of identity. The Chanukah lights provide us with warmth, joy, strength and inspiration. Such is a purpose of a community-wide Menorah lighting and celebration. Fashion Island joins Chabad Jewish Center in inviting the entire community to celebrate the Festival of Lights at a public Menorah Lighting ceremony on Tuesday, December 16 at 6:00PM in Fashion Island’s Atrium Garden Court. The celebration begins with a holiday musical performance by a group of young special needs children from the Friendship Circle. The lighting of the huge Friendship Menorah, painted by children with special needs will be kindled by 8-Time Olympic Medalist, Jason Lezak. Participants will enjoy gifts and treats, Hanukah crafts, face painting and balloon animals. Participants are encouraged to bring along a

gift for the community toy drive and distribution to underprivileged children, making these deserving children’s holiday that much brighter. Hanukah, a celebration for all time, is highlighted by the kindling of the Menorah each night of the Holiday. “It is a holiday that enriches our lives and strengthens our tradition”, said Rabbi Reuven Mintz of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life. “In ancient times, our ancestors rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, we rededicate ourselves to making this world a better and brighter place. Hanukah also transmits the universal message that ultimately good will prevail over evil, freedom over oppression and light over darkness.” Event Calendar Summary Menorah Lighting at Fashion Island Date: Tuesday, December 16th at 6:00 PM Location: Fashion Island’s Atrium Garden Court – Near Barnes and Noble Info www.JewishNewport.com ~ (949) 721-9800
