HAGGEN STORE OPENS IN FORMER PAVILION IN LADERA RANCH Haggen Brings Exciting New One-Stop Grocery Shopping Experience to California, Arizona & Nevada. Conversion of 100 New Stores Taking Place March-June. West Coast regional grocery chain Haggen (pronounced “hay-gunn”) took ownership of its very first store in California, the Albertsons located at 7660 El Camino Real in Carlsbad, California, at 12:01 am Monday, March 9. The new store, refreshed to reflect Haggen’s focus on fresh, locally sourced products alongside everyday big brands, opened its doors to La Costa shoppers on Wednesday, March 11. The store was the first of 100 stores in California, Arizona and Nevada it plans to acquire and convert to the Haggen brand in the first half of 2015. Once the acquisition is completed, Haggen will expand from 18 stores with 16 pharmacies to 164 stores with 106 pharmacies; from 2,000 employees to more than 10,000 employees; and from a Pacific Northwest company with locations in Oregon and Washington to a major regional grocery chain with locations in Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada and Arizona. “We’re excited about the changes we’re making to enhance these stores with more locally sourced food offerings, genuine service and homemade quality, and we’re confident customers will like the new look, convenience and value offered at our new Haggen one-stop, fullservice grocery destinations,” said Bill Shaner, Haggen CEO Pacific Southwest. “Haggen has built its 81-year-old business on providing excellent fresh produce and high quality meats and seafood. That focus will definitely be reflected in each of the 100 stores we’re opening in California, Nevada and Arizona, introducing shoppers to Haggen’s unique mix of healthy, hassle-free

Local Gymnast kayli tran Wins Western Regional Titles By Irene Palatics Olympica Gymnastics’ Level 8 gymnast, Kayli Tran, has won back to back Western Regional Championship titles after competing in Phoenix, Arizona April 17 – 19. Tran competed against top gymnasts from California, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. Tran won first on bars, scoring

9.625. She also took the top podium spot on beam (9.525) as well as on floor (9.550). The 14-year-old freshman from Santa Margarita Catholic High School (SMCHS) finished her successful season by winning gold in the overall competition with a final score of 37.800. Olympica’s Head Coach, Brent Gohres applauded Tran’s success, saying, “ I am super proud of this young athlete. It’s very difficult to win an all-around title at the regional level but to win back to back regional titles is quite an accomplishment. It’s not surprising though, as Kayli is a very gifted athlete with a tremendous work ethic and positive attitude. Put those all together and you’re going to have success.” In this season’s 8 meets, Tran won five third place finishes, four-second place medals, and 10 first place podium spots. “It is a pleasure to coach Kayli, and I’m looking forward to next season,” said Gohres. Kayli Tran trains 20 hours a week year round at Olympica Gymnastics Academy in Laguna Hills. Capistrano Unified School District Announces Early, Pre-Labor Day Starts for Next Two Academic Years The Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) announced earlier pre-Labor Day start dates for its next two academic years. The Board of Trustees recently approved starting the 2016-2017 school year on Monday, August 15, 2016. This follows the previously announced Tuesday, August 25, 2015, start date for the 2015-2016 school year. The earlier start in 2016 will align the calendars of CUSD’s elementary, secondary and adult transition programs with local colleges and Orange County school districts and eliminate breaks in the flow of classroom instruction. “The Board of Trustees has taken a major step forward in optimizing instructional time for our students and teachers and facilitating opportunities for academic growth,” said Superintendent Kirsten M. Vital. “Starting the school year before Labor Day will ensure the most continuous instructional period that Capistrano Unified School District has had in years. With the semester now ending before winter break, we have lessened the number of breaks in instructional time within a particular course of study, and our students, teachers, and their families will now

be able to enjoy a ‘true’ break, with the semester ending at the winter break.” In addition to the elementary, secondary and adult transition program calendars being brought into alignment, the CUSD and Saddleback College instructional calendars will also now align. This will better position CUSD students to take advanced coursework and participate in a wider range of summer programs

offered at the college. Students in Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs will also benefit by receiving additional direct instruction during the school year to optimize instructional opportunities prior to testing. This schedule will also better align with post-secondary programs, allowing our graduating seniors to participate in graduation ceremonies as well as

college transition activities. “Prioritizing instructional time in the classroom is a top priority,” said CUSD Board President Lynn Hatton-Hodson, “and it is incumbent upon the Board of Trustees to facilitate as much of that quality education time as possible to ensure an environment most conducive to student achievement.”

The Art of the Perfect Gift Mother’s Day gifts she’ll remember Mother’s day is next weekend. When it comes to honoring that special mother figure in your life, nothing says it better than a clever and thoughtful gift. Whether she’s a fitness fanatic or fashion queen, wrap up the perfect gift that shows your appreciation and love for mom this Mother’s Day. She does so much. From helping you buy the latest must-have heels to showing you the magic of a little black dress, your mother played a vital role in helping you develop your own sense of style through the years. This Mother’s Day, it’s time to return the favor by giving mom a chance to embrace her own individuality. Make her special holiday one she’ll remember with gift ideas that let her see how you know and appreciate the woman she is, such as these: Customize her connectivity. Let your high-tech mom reach out to family and friends in style with a personalized tablet cover or case. She’ll love the sleekness of a cover in faux snake skin or leather from her favorite handbag designer. Many cases and covers offer personalization, so you can add a special message or her initials. Express her style. Jewelry isn’t just jewelry, it’s celebrating the “Art

of You.” It’s the story you share alongside the loving mother figure in your life, and how you create and celebrate those moments. The next time mom puts on a piece of jewelry, let it remind her of a specific moment in time or a string of memories you created together. Reach her fitness goals. You’ve always been grateful for how she’s cared for you. Now, help mom take care of herself with the gift of a wearable fitness tracker. Sporty moms will love swapping out colored bands to match workout outfits. Some options even include designer bands and pendants made from metallic materials, so she can keep counting those steps while out on the town. Inspire her education. Through the years, mom taught you plenty. Now show your support for her personal interests by signing up for a class that lets you enjoy learning together. Photography, cake decorating, gardening – the options are nearly endless. What better way to show mom you appreciate her than to join her in exploring the hobby or activity she enjoys the most. From the expert baker to the stylish sort, every mother deserves a gift that will make her swoon.

CASA Celebration of Children: Raised Over one million Dollars! Photos by Xuong Do from Happy Photos Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), held their annual Celebration of Children: Black & White Ball at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel with 435 guests joining to celebrate CASA’s 30th Anniversary. The event contributed to a net of one million dollars for CASA’s largest fundraiser of the year. Lauren Wong and Brenda St. Hilaire, both of Newport Beach, co-chaired this lovely evening, which began with a cocktail reception and silent auction featuring over 100 captivating items. Former NFL Quarterback to the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys, Paul McDonald, served as Master of Ceremonies for the night, which included Keynote Speaker, NFL Quarterback to the Philadelphia Eagles, Mark Sanchez, a gourmet dinner, a live auction, dancing and entertainment. The event started with a VIP reception then a scrumpous dinner served starting with the first course of Heirloom tomato wedges, local burrata cheese, pesto cream, extra virgin olive oil, micro basil. The Entrée was amazing duo of signature dry-rub filet mignon with a merlot wine sauce along citrus glazed salmon with leek fondue with parsley potato mash, and a seasonal vegetable medley. The decadent dessert was a Dark chocolate flowerless cake which everyone enjoyed. The program started with Keynote speaker, Mark Sanchez, inspiring the audience as he discussed and shared his own personal experiences of growing up in Orange County and the importance of giving back to society’s most vulnerable population. Mark spoke from his heart and talked about how his Father would continually make him practice both his athletic skills simultaneously while working on his educational development while he was growing up and how all children need to have that support around them to thrive. Jennifer and Anton Segerstrom received CASA’s highest given award, “Children’s Champion” for their many years of support and personal dedication to children’s well-being while in the foster care system, and South Coast Plaza was honored as “Outstanding Corporation” for their commitment to assisting CASA grow and prosper over the last 30 years. Tustin Ranch resident, Joy Winger was honored as “Advocate of the Year” for her passion and dedication of service to child abuse victims by being a Court Appointed Special Advocate to 6 different children over the last 13 years. Austin Howle, the evening’s youth speaker described painfully growing up in the foster care system, “I was in 17 different placements from the age of 5 and a half to the 6th grade”, which often led to him changing schools and being separated from his siblings. Nineteen-year-old Howle, also described in detail that without his CASA’s “relentless” conversations on the importance of doing well in school, he would not have received his high school diploma or gained admission to Cal State University, San Bernardino, where he is finishing up a successful freshman year. The live auction then got everyone participating with items up for grabs which included a Dream Vacation Home Experience in Phuket, Thailand, Versace Spring/Summer 2016 Runway Show in Milan for two, and a “Once in a Lifetime Anaheim Angels Experience” including eight front row tickets, opportunity for a child to act as a bat boy/ bat girl, one adult throwing the first pitch of the game, and more. David Yurman generously donated an 18 karat gold wide sculpted bracelet that was valued at over $10,000 and was won by a lucky attendee through the evening’s Opportunity Drawing. Young MC and DJ Miles closed out the evening’s program and began the magnificent after-party with 3 songs including the hit “Bust A Move”, which got the crowd out of their seats and onto the dance floor. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Orange County is a privately-funded non-profit organization that serves severely abused, neglected and abandoned children through the recruitment, training and continued support of volunteers who advocate and mentor these children, representing their best interest in the courtroom and other settings. Orange County Community Foundation “iheartoc Giving Day” Raises Over $1.8 Million for Orange County Nonprofits

The Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) raised $1,813,460 for Orange County nonprofits during iheartoc Giving Day, the first-ever county-wide day of giving held from 6 a.m. Tuesday, April 21 through noon Wednesday, April 22. The goal was to inspire members of the community to show their love for local nonprofits by donating to their favorite charity or cause via the iheartoc.org website. A total of 6,138 donations were made in just 30 hours to 347 organizations – with donations going to 100 percent of participating nonprofits. “We are thrilled to have raised more than $1.8 million during iheartoc Giving Day as our gift to the nonprofit community in celebration of OCCF’s 25th anniversary,” said Shelley Hoss, OCCF’s president. “We were moved and inspired by Orange County’s response to our challenge to “give where your heart lives” in support of the work of outstanding local nonprofits, whether the cause was feeding the hungry, educating youth or preserving the environment.” OCCF set up an online platform with searchable profiles of participating nonprofits at iheartoc.org where givers donated to their favorite nonprofit, with a minimum donation of $25. Participating nonprofits will share $535,000 in bonus awards and prizes. Ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, 74 prizes were awarded during the event, including 30 Golden Ticket awards of $1,000 each to one randomly selected nonprofit per hour. Plus, eight Mega Multiplier awards were given in each nonprofit budget category for the highest number of unique donors during Giving Day, including $5,000 to the first place winners: Together We Rise located in Brea for the small organization category (with an annual budget up to $750,000) and to Operation

Underground Railroad located in Anaheim for the large organization category (with an annual budget of more than $750,000). And, for raising the most money during the 30-hour period Top Dog prizes of $5,000 each went to HomeAid Orange County located in Irvine for the large organization category and to Animals for Armed Forces Foundation located in Fullerton for the small organization category. Additionally, in celebration of iheartoc concluding on Earth Day, special prizes were available for environmental charities including $4,000 awarded to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center located in Laguna Beach for the highest number of unique donors and $4,000 awarded to the Environmental Nature Center located in Newport Beach for the highest total amount of funds raised. Community Partners Helped Rally Support! An A-list of Orange County businesses joined OCCF as iheartoc community partners, including Angels Baseball, Anaheim Ducks, Cox Communications, The Irvine Company, PBS SoCaL, Wahoo’s Fish Taco and Disneyland Resort, as well as many of the foundation’s individual and family donors. View the full list here. OCCF hosted a full day of festivities to fuel giving on April 21 including a family-friendly rally and mobile donation station at the Giant Wheel Court at the Irvine Spectrum Center in Irvine. Festivities included face painting, a DJ and dance contests, bubble play and exhibits by nonprofit organizations including Discovery Cube, The Ecology Center, The Pet Rescue Center, and Pretend City Children’s Museum. Overcoming the top 5 challenges of being retirement ready in 3 simple steps It’s no secret that Americans aren’t saving enough for retirement. Many people are coming up short when it comes to funding their nest egg. But why is the problem so wide-spread? Insight can be found in the human behaviors that tend to get in the way of saving adequately. With National Save for Retirement Week the third week in October, now is the perfect time to learn more about the most common hurdles of retirement savings. The experts at Prudential Retirement note the top five challenges to being retirement ready include: 1. Living longer Did you know a baby born today is more likely to live to 100 than to be born with blue eyes? The fact is, people are living longer, and it’s hard to know how long you’ll live. You may live many years beyond retirement, a time when you’re no longer creating income. The challenge is we still believe we’re living to 70 or 75 - but think about it. How old is the oldest person you know alive today? Chances are, you know someone who is well into their 90s. Saving for retirement now prepares you for the exciting possibility of having a longer retirement. 2. Procrastination It’s human nature to procrastinate. And while some things take the

same amount of time to do whether completed today or a year from now, others only get harder to do the longer you delay them. Saving for retirement is one example - every year you don’t save for retirement is less money you may have when it comes time to retire, making it that much more difficult to reach your goals and pursue your dreams. 3. Optimism People in general are optimistic, which is a wonderful quality, except when it comes to retirement planning. It’s easy to think bad things won’t ever happen to us - including unexpected health issues, loss of a job, or a bad accident. It’s important to be realistic when planning for retirement, and always plan for the unexpected. 4. Following the pack Humans are social beings. If enough people are doing something, we tend to want to follow because we assume there must be a good reason. The urge to follow the pack can get us in trouble, though, particularly when it comes to saving and investing. Make sure you define your own goals for retirement and work with a financial advisor to create an individual plan that works for you. 5. Instant gratification The newest car, computer or video game - it’s easy for Americans to feel like they need to keep up with

the Joneses. Spending too much on impulse purchases rather than funding savings can be devastating, particularly for your retirement. Learning to delay gratification and keep a budget is key. We all want to imagine living out our dreams in retirement - rather than worrying about money. Whether you’re in your 20s or your 50s, retirement savings should be top of mind. In addition to knowing and conquering the top challenges of retirement readiness, here are three simple things you can do today to ensure you’re on the right path: 1. Workplace retirement opportunities If your place of work offers a retirement program, sign up for it as soon as possible. From

employer matches to potential tax benefits, retirement programs deliver numerous positives for employees. Remember, compound interest is an important factor in building retirement income, so it literally doesn’t pay to put saving off. 2. Diversification Putting all your eggs in one basket is risky when it comes to retirement funding. A diversified investment strategy can help protect you from the unexpected. 3. Financial planner Working with a professional can help you learn about various savings options for reaching your personal retirement goals. The expertise of a financial planner can make the stressful and confusing process easier.

Three-room makeover takes homes from simple to sensational this spring Spring is the season of new beginnings, so is it any wonder that many Americans think about home improvement and brightening their decor when the weather warms? Simple updates can bring the cheerful perspective from the outside indoors, and revive any room just in time for warmer weather. Make your bathroom bloom Relaxed modernity is ideal for a bathroom, and a serene palette is a great step to create this calming oasis. Use the beach as your muse; pastels such as light blue and eggshell white will create an oceanfront vibe no matter where you live. To bring the coastal feel to the forefront, you can easily add waves to your walls with new FrogTape Shape Tape. The tape is a pre-cut painter’s tape available in wave, chevron and scallop patterns, perfect for decorative painting. Shape Tape is treated with PaintBlock Technology, which creates crisp paint lines - keeping your painting projects looking professional. It’s simple to add ripples of waves to your bathroom walls, accessories or even the shower curtain. The finishing touches tie any room together, and the bathroom is no exception. The right accent rug

and towels will transform the look of your bath with minimal effort and deliver maximum style. Updating your decorative accents will complement your new spring color scheme, and leave the space feeling refreshed season after season. Spring-ready sleeping chambers Light hues are a great go-to for spring home decorating; utilize one of 2014’s hottest trends with a whitethemed bedroom. Not only is white timeless and versatile, but it allows an array of interior design options. Add crisp white curtains to your windows to brighten the room, and for a chic addition, add a delicate white canopy to soften the atmosphere even more. For a hint of color, add in shades of muted teals - a top color for spring this year - on accessories throughout the room. If your spring style calls for more color, add vibrant bursts throughout your boudoir. As the bed is the focal point of the master bedroom, make it the center your attention as well. Fresh fabrics and linens are essential for spring, so opt for a delicate coverlet in your favorite pattern. Also, incorporate decorative vases filled with fresh flowers throughout the space, allowing the fragrance

of spring to accompany your fresh decor. Spring-spruce the living room To kick off spring with color and character, add an assortment of patterned throw pillows to your living room. Mix and match fabrics and patterns - geometrics, florals and stripes pair well together. It will give your living area visual texture and is the perfect way to perk up this room for the season. If you’re not in the mood for a complete room redo, use your existing color palette as inspiration; simply add in complementary shades to create a modern and harmonious look. Looking to turn heads with a simple spring update? Reposition your furniture. First, determine the main furniture piece in the room, and place it in a position that welcomes guests so that it serves as the focal point. Next, rearrange your other furnishings, photos and artwork for a whole new look that will take your

visitors by surprise, without spending a dime. Be sure to keep items from blocking any natural light - a well-lit room is great for any time of year, especially spring. With these simple home updates, you’ll be sure to awaken your abode with springtime appeal. For design inspiration and more information on Shape Tape, visit FrogTape.com.
