Cystic fibrosis “Pipeline to a Cure” flip flop gala To Honor The Kirby Family of Ladera Ranch

The 8th Annual Pipeline to a Cure “flip-flop” gala is about two months away. This year’s event will honor The Kirby’s of Ladera Ranch and will also feature our honorary co-chairs Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama. The event will be held at the Hyatt in HB. Annual Gala Has Raised Millions for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Noelle Kirby has never let having cystic fibrosis slow her down. At 37, Noelle is among a growing number of adults who battle the inherited disease with hours of daily breathing treatments and an extensive routine of more than 50 pills a day that keep her digestive system in check. Noelle’s husband of 10 years, Jason fell in love with her enthusiasm for life and optimistic attitude. Together they are fighting for a cure, and along with the Kirby family, are being honored by Pipeline to a Cure. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s 8 th Annual Pipeline to a Cure gala take place on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort and Spa in Huntington Beach, Calif. “Noelle Kirby’s courageous fight against cystic fibrosis and her enthusiasm for life have been a source of inspiration to so many. Noelle, Jason and the Kirby family are making a big difference in the lives of those with cystic fibrosis, Page 4

and we are honored to recognize their efforts at Pipeline,” said Judy Burlingham, chairperson of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Pipeline to a Cure. On July 11th the Kirby family will be joined by legendary watermen Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama, Jamie Mitchell, other athletes, musicians and surf industry giants who will gather to celebrate the healthful connection between surfing and cystic fibrosis. Pipeline to a Cure celebrates the discovery that cystic fibrosis children who surfed had significantly healthier lungs. Australian researchers determined that inhaling saltwater mist has a powerful effect on rehydrating the lining of the lungs, which allows individuals with cystic fibrosis to more easily eliminate bacteria-contaminated mucus. This discovery led to the development of hypertonic saline solution, which individuals with cystic fibrosis around the world now inhale every day. In essence, individuals with cystic fibrosis now mimic a “surf session” on a daily basis. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually

The Ladera Ranch News

thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections, and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food. With no public funding, funds raised from the private sector provide a tremendous and critical lifeline to the more than 70,000 children around the world with cystic fibrosis. The last three events attracted a groundswell of support from the business and surf communities. Current and past sponsors include Ladera Ranch News, Variant, Wahoo’s Fish Taco, LAcarGUY, American Airlines, Coast Benefit Consultants, BJ’s Restaurants, Nick Alexander Imports, Kaiser Permanente, Crown Imports (Pacifico), Quiksilver, Volcom, HB Surf School, Newport Surf Camp, Coca-Cola, Raj Manufacturing, TOMS, Kid Creature, Modern Health, CBS Sports, Health Management Services, Newport Beach Aquatic Center, Quikblade, Surf Industry Manufacturers Association, Skilled Pharmacy, Smart & Final, Time & Alarm Systems, Rutan & Tucker and KROQ. The Pipeline gala begins at 6pm for cocktails and silent auction, dinner and live auction program begin at 7:30 pm. Tickets for the event are $350. Table and other sponsorships are available. Tips for making your child’s birthday extra special this year For many young children (especially those between the ages of 3 and 6), a birthday is the most important and anticipated day of the year, ranking even above Christmas or Easter. The challenge, however, is that with more two-income families, increase in single parent households, and busier work and school schedules, finding the time and the creativity to make kids’ birthdays extra special is difficult. “There are many fun and easy ways to make your child feel extra special on their birthday. It is amazing how these little touches can make such big and lasting impressions,” says Tish Dahlby, the author of Pinklejinx, a new children’s book that tells the story of Joy, the birthday fairy. Here are some simple ideas to help your child feel special. * Start the celebration early. While the child is sleeping, sneak into the bedroom and decorate with balloons and streamers. Cover the floor or stuff the closet with balloons. Form a trail of confetti that leads from the bedroom to the breakfast table. * Provide surprise birthday wishes throughout the house. Hide birthday wishes in unexpected places. Using soap, craft a birthday greeting on the bathroom mirror, the kitchen window or the rear window of the car. * Involve the whole family. If there Page 6

are siblings or other relatives in the house, have them wait on the birthday child. Even the family pet could wear a special birthday hat. * Create a festive environment fit for royalty. Consider dining at the fancy table in a room reserved just for special occasions. There you can pull out all the stops to make your child feel like a real prince or princess. The Pinklejinx birthday keepsake kit provides everything you need, including the storybook you and your child can read the night before to create a new family tradition of welcoming Joy, the birthday fairy. The kit includes a brightly colored felt birthday banner along with a festive felt chair cover with ribbons and tassels that turns any chair into the seat of honor. A velvety crown provides the full royal treatment and is durable enough to be worn for hours or even days after the birthday festivities have ended. Breakfast can be served on the colorful cake plate or pedestal bowl, along with birthday candle-shaped utensils. The most important ingredient, of course, is the Pinklejinx sprinkles, which should be sprinkled just before making the birthday wish. * Celebrate loud and clear. If possible, find a way to celebrate the exact moment of the child’s birth with lots of hoopla - perhaps blow some

The Ladera Ranch News

horns or bang the pots. * Break the routine. This is a day unlike any other, so don’t follow the same routine. Get creative with the food you serve, its color and how you serve it. Instead of making the child wait to open presents, start the day by opening at least one very special present. * Communicate what’s special about your child. This is the time for letting your feelings show. Take turns going around the table and let everyone in the family give one reason why the birthday child is special. * Lunchbox surprise. Pack school lunches as normal but take a few extra minutes to wrap the birthday

child’s sandwich in gift wrap. Imagine your child’s smile as he or she unwraps the most special sandwich at the lunch table. * Start a new tradition. Make this birthday so special that your little ones will already be counting down the days until the next birthday. Consider doing the same thing every year. Start by reading the Pinklejinx birthday story the night before the celebration and prepare for the coming of the birthday fairy. Or take a photo in the same location doing the same thing each birthday to see how much has changed in just one year. Nathalie Manning and Con Spirit Sail Away with a Grand Prix Win

With an entourage of family, friends and clients, Manning was surrounded with smiling faces The $30,000 Markel Insurance Grand Prix at the Blenheim Red, White, & Blue Classic finished in style as Nathalie Manning won her first grand prix blue aboard her own Con Spirit. The pair were the only double clean of the day. The class included future show jumping stars such as sixteenyear-old Sophia Mossman and seventeen-year-old Morgan Dickerson, both alternates for the North American Junior and Young Riders Championships this July, as well as riders with impressive miles like Mexico’s Eduardo Sanchez Navarro and American Michelle Rodal. A strong local contingent also competed, including last week’s Markel Insurance Grand Prix winner, Marc Grock, and the 1.40m event once again offered another solid yet not overwhelming grand prix opportunity. In 2014, the wildly successful Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series hosted classes with up to 96 entries and a competitive final at the Las Vegas National. Returning as the sponsor for a second year, Brandon Seger, Director of Equine Operations for Markel, is pleased with the response to these events. “We wanted to do a sponsorship with Blenheim EquiSports, and they had the brilliant idea to do this ‘meter forty’ series. They explained that it would be a class where up-and-coming riders, as well as amateur riders, could compete with some of the pros,” he commented. “And I thought what a cool opportunity to get involved in a class that brings everyone together, and gives them a chance to rise to the occasion.”

International course designer Jack Robson’s track handled the mix of experience well. With a tight time allowed, two riders finished with only time faults, Rodal on Morgan Hill Partners’ Albert II and Jamie Barge on Kyelico’s Luebbo. In a winning round format, faults accrued for the top six scoring riders in the first round carried over to the jump-off. The two riders with time faults returned first, followed by the four who were clean in round one. The first of the four were Manning and Con Spirit who rode fault free in 45.85. The next three attempts, Misti Cassar on Gavin Brodin’s Allstar

5, Eduardo Sanchez Navarro on his Pacifico and Jamie Barge aboard Kylieco’s Lasse each had rails. Manning galloped away with a double clean victory. Grinning from ear to ear, the California professional was ecstatic as she came out of the ring. She had huge praise for her nine-year-old mount. “He’s perfect,” she says of Con Spirit, a horse she got when he was six years old. “I’ve never had a grand prix horse. And this is our first grand prix win!” Bringing along another young horse, Manning also won the Six Year Old Jumper Classic on the same day

aboard Helium. A pro since 2009, Manning is coached by Michelle Parker and runs Acorn Farm at the nearby Oaks Facility. “I just want to thank Michelle Parker and Salvador Alvarado, Alex Alvarado, and all of Acorn Farm and Guillermo Flores for all their help. I couldn’t do it without my team! Manning and Con Spirit plan to continue in the grand prix classes at Showpark this summer. The shows head south to Del Mar in just over two weeks with the Showpark Summer Festival, Racing Festival and August Festival. Photos by McCool

There were nine items up for grabs plus a premium opportunity drawing for a chance to win a David Yurman ring and bracelet pair valued at $3,125. The winner of the jewelry was Diana McCutchen of Aliso Viejo. Some of the opportunity items were a $1,000 South Coast Plaza Gift Certificate and a Diptyque Basket, Tom Xavier was the lucky winner. Colleen Davidson of Newport Coast took home the 4 Diamond Club Angels tickets pus parking and a Prime Cut Café gift card while Jackie Cisneros won the Mercedes Benz S-Klass Ride on Car for Kids with 2 tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific and 2 round trip passes on the Catalina Flyer. Other items included an Anaheim Duck Experience, OC Restaurant Experience with Golf, Disney passes and designer fashions. The luncheon program started with a welcome from Event Co-Chair Carey Clawson. A video was introduced of how important it is to support this organization and what it does for our youth. Founded in 1999 by Susan Samueli, 44 Women for Children contributes to Orangewood Children’s Foundation by nurturing, supporting and inspiring adolescents emancipating from the foster care system on their 18th birthdays. Scholarship student Karla was then introduced to talk about her experience with 44 Women for Children. She started her speech by showing a video about her past that she created. She described the abuse she endured while living with her family but transitioning from the video to her speech, Karla said, “First things first. Please smile, my story is not a sad one.” She shifted the focus from her past to her present, sharing with the audience five great things that have happened to her in the past five years, including graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree, joining Teach for America and spending two years teaching in Hawaii, and being accepted into a master’s degree program at John’s Hopkins University (funded in part through an Orangewood Advanced Studies scholarship). “My heart is bursting with gratitude,” she said. “I see the faces of the people who love the ones who feel unlovable. Your contribution delivers miracles. You took a chance on me and now I no longer contemplate ‘how will I get there?’ I contemplate ‘of all that is possible- what will I choose?’” Actress Holly Robinson Peete sat down for a Q&A session with Orangewood Board member and NBC4 News Orange County Bureau Chief Vikki Vargas. The two women, both working mothers, exchanged light banter on the topics of fame, family, and bad 80’s hairstyles. On a more serious note, Peete shared with the audience what drove her and her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, to create their HollyRod Foundation, which supports those affected by Parkinson’s (which Holly’s father battled) and autism (with which the couple’s eldest son is diagnosed). She spoke about the value of an education telling the story of how she stopped acting to return to school and of support for marginalized youth who often don’t have a voice in society. Wrapping up her time on stage, Peete shared a quote with the crowd by Marian Edelman, the 1st woman accepted to the Mississippi Bar, “Service is the rent we pay for living,” and applauded those in attendance for their service to Orange County foster youth. 44 Women for Children focuses on three key areas: providing mentoring and education; increasing community awareness about child abuse and neglect; and hosting annual fundraising events.
