PACIFIC SYMPHONY ROCKS THE END OF THE 2011-12 SEASON It’s a flashback of the best kind, when Pacific Symphony concludes its 2012-13 season with one of pop music’s heavy hitters: Grammy Awardwinning vocalist songwriter Peter Cetera, singing hits from his solo career and as lead vocalist of the band Chicago. Bobby Grich will join fans to ride Metrolink to the game as part of the Angels Express service. Bobby Grich, who played for the California Angels from 1977 to 1986, will join fans at the Laguna Niguel / Mission Viejo station on Wednesday to ride Metrolink to the game as part of the Angels Express service. Baseball fans will have the opportunity to ride the Angels Express Train with former Angels player Bobby Grich on Wednesday from the Laguna Niguel / Mission Viejo Metrolink station. Grich is a six-time American League All-Star and the first player elected to the Angels’ Hall of Fame in 1996. Riders will have the chance to meet Grich, take photos and enjoy free food provided by Jerry’s Wood-Fired Dogs. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. at the station, 28200 Forbes Road in Laguna Niguel. Grich and riders will depart on the 5:50 p.m. train to Angel Stadium in Anaheim. “Angels fans have the unique opportunity to meet one of the most well-known players in the league, as well as ride the train with him,” said Paul Glaab, OCTA board chairman and mayor of Laguna Niguel. “I look forward to enjoying the pre-game festivities with our riders and encourage fans to join us for a fun and hassle-free game day.” The Angels Express trains provide service to all weekday home games starting at 7:05 p.m. from Laguna Niguel / Mission Viejo, L.A. Union Station and Riverside to Anaheim station. Trains will depart from the station 30 minutes after the end of each game. On Friday nights, the Angels Express trains will leave 45 minutes after the game, allowing riders to enjoy the post-game fireworks. Tickets are $7 round-trip for adults, $6 for seniors and disabled, $4 for youth (ages 6-18) and free for children ages five and under when accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets may be purchased at the station, at participating Ralphs locations in Orange County, the OCTA store, by phone at (714) 5605932 or online.

Reserved Seats for All Action Sports are On Sale Now and Include Free Fair Admission The 2012 OC Fair (July 13-August 12) is turning up the heat this summer with an action-packed lineup in the Action Sports Arena. The 23-day lineup brings something for all sports fans and adrenaline junkies, including motocross, kart racing, bull riding, extreme rodeo, mixed martial arts, BMX, canine agility demonstrations, skateboarding and, new this year, dodgeball and an all-female demolition derby. Opening the 2012 Fair is X-Treme Freestyle Moto-X, featuring high-flying motorcycle stunts on Friday, July 13. The rest of the opening weekend features dirt-flying motorcycle racing during the 38th Annual Speedway Fair Derby on Saturday, July 14, and low-to-theground racing action in the OC Fair Kart Racing Challenge on Sunday, July 15. The first full week of the 2012 Fair is a dream for every cowboy, cowgirl and cattle-roper, with multiple nights of bull riding, rodeo and equestrian action. Two nights of Extreme Rodeo features crazy antics where man versus animal takes on a humorous twist (Wednesday, July 18 and Friday, July 20.) More traditional Bull Riding features professional riders taking wild 8-second rides on Thursday, July 19 and Saturday, July 21. Closing the week on Sunday, July 22, is Fiesta del Charro with impressive roping and equestrian skills. The second week of the 2012 Fair is guaranteed to dazzle with human and canine tricks alike, featuring BMX and skateboarding, mixed martial arts, dodgeball and police canines. Opening the week is two days of competitive BMX riders in MegaRamp BMX/Skate Triples on Wednesday, July 25 and

Thursday, July 26. On Friday, July 27, the Fair showcases human strength and agility with SummerFist V, a multi-bout event featuring mixed martial arts competitors. The action continues Saturday, July 28 with the OC Fair’s all-new Ultimate Dodgeball Championships, where dodgeball teams from all across Orange County will dodge, duck, dip and dive their way to the championship title. Closing the week is the return of the OC Police Canine Association Show on Sunday, July 29, featuring the talents of Orange County’s four-legged officers. The third week of the 2012 Fair brings even more canine action in five backto-back days of Jump! The Ultimate Dog Show at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. daily Wednesday-Sunday, August 1-5. The 2012 OC Fair’s final week is mass destruction with the Fairgoerfavorite demolition derby in three different formats. The classic Orange Crush Demolition Derby features cars crashing and bashing for the coveted trophy and prize money on two separate nights, Wednesday, August 8 and Saturday, August 11. Cars are replaced with motor homes – toilets and all – for the Motorhome Madness Demolition Derby on Thursday, August 9 and Sunday, August 12. On August 10, the Fair shows demolition isn’t just for the boys with the all-new Damsels of Destruction Demolition Derby, featuring pink pickups and all female drivers. Choosing the Right Light Bulb

The way you light your home is changing, starting with how you shop for light bulbs. In addition to new choices in technology – state of the art LEDs or CFLs, for example – you have a variety of options in terms of brightness, as well as how long you want the bulb to last. In addition, you have the option of spending more money up front on an energy efficient bulb that can save you money in the long-run. The good news is you don’t have to be an Edison to find the right bulb. Use these tips and resources to pick the perfect bulb for your home: C a l c u l a t e Yo u r S a v i n g s Before you hit the stores, do your homework. Determine what lighting attributes are important to you, whether it’s long life, instant-on, dimming capabilities, bulb shape or luminosity. Different bulb technologies offer different benefits. To boil down how much switching to a more efficient bulb means for you, look for resources like the savings calculator GE offers at www.gelighting.com/ lighttransforms. It shows consumers how much they’ll save with a simple switch from incandescent bulbs to GE’s Energy-Efficient Soft White bulbs, which operate much like incandescent bulbs but are up to 28

percent more efficient. Check the Facts The back of every new light bulb package now includes a “Lighting Facts” label that is similar in form to the nutrition label on the back of food boxes. The Lighting Facts label provides information about lumens (brightness), energy cost, life expectancy, light appearance (warm versus cool light), wattage and mercury content. Mandated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the label is meant to standardize how companies in the lighting industry convey light bulb features, helping you to quickly make comparisons between bulbs and bulb technologies. Look for Lumens, Not Watts In addition to the Lighting Facts label, some light bulb packaging is placing more emphasis from classifications by watts instead classifications by lumens. While you may have equated watts with brightness every time you made a bulb purchase, in true lighting terms, this gauge isn’t accurate. Watts are merely the measure of electrical energy used to light a bulb. A lumen is a measure of the bulb’s

brightness. Simply put, the higher the lumen number, the brighter the bulb. So, if you are looking for a brighter light, look for a higher lumen number on the box. The same isn’t necessarily true for watts. In fact, a 13 watt CFL may be brighter than a 60 watt incandescent bulb. Examine New Packaging Along with the Lighting Facts label, some manufacturers are going one step further in helping consumers decipher differences in bulbs by changing their packaging. For example, GE Lighting has implemented a color-coding system to help you

better understand the light that will be emitted from each bulb. Color selections are modeled after the natural cycle of daylight, from sunrise to sunset. For example, yellow boxes represent bulbs with strong, vibrant light ideal for home cooking, cleaning and grooming, while purple boxes represent subtle and reassuring light for use at night. Making Technology Work for You With technology dominating more and more of people’s personal and professional lives, it’s easy to lose track of passwords for smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops and more. In addition, for many people, keeping track of online user names and passwords for various accounts – email, shopping, social networks, etc. – has also become a hassle, and therefore an inconvenience. In fact, according to a survey conducted by Norton by Symantec, when given a list of potentially challenging activities, 40 percent of people ranked remembering passwords among one of the top three most difficult tasks. This ranking preceded even balancing a checkbook. That same survey also found that 70 percent of respondents had forgotten at least one password in a single month, which is why for many, opting for an easier-to-remember, though weaker password is preferred. But weak passwords leave accounts and devices more vulnerable to hackers and scam artists, which also plays a role in identity theft. Therefore, it’s important to create strong passwords. Creating a Strong Password According to the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT), following these steps

can help you create a stronger password: Use a combination of both uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters when possible. Longer passwords are more complicated and thus stronger. If a website allows for passwords between six to eight characters, make sure to take advantage of the longer character allowance. Refrain from using personal dates, such as birthdays, or names, such as those of your spouse or child. This information can be discovered by people within your social circle, as well as hackers, so creating codes around words you’ll remember makes for stronger passwords, rather than full words or names. Do not use the same password across multiple accounts. For example, if you have created a password for online banking, do not use that same password to access your work or personal email account. Laguna Beach celebrates “World Music” with its Annual Fête de la Musique The Laguna Beach Sister Cities Association (LBSCA) is pleased to announce their 5th annual Fête de la Musique on Saturday, June 16, 2012, featuring a variety of performing artists singing and playing throughout the downtown area of Laguna Beach. The Fête de la Musique, which was awarded Laguna Beach Arts Alliance’s “2010 Best New Arts Program,” is held in conjunction with “World Music Day” to celebrate the coming of summer each June. The Fête de la Musique was originated in France and is celebrated worldwide on, or near, the beginning of summer. LBSCA has crafted its Fête de la Musique to promote Laguna Beach performing arts through live music by a variety of local musicians and singers. The Fête de la Musique will begin at 1 p.m. with an opening ceremony at the Main Beach Cobblestones. Following the opening ceremony, approximately 25 musicians and singers will perform a variety of music genres, at a number of locations throughout downtown Laguna Beach, including a number of accomplished Laguna Beach student performers. The festival of musical day will conclude with a sing-along closing ceremony at

It wasn’t until 1981 that French Cultural Minister, Jack Lang, adopted the idea. The first Fête was held in France the following year. “The Fête has spread to over 110 countries and 250 cities around the world, and Laguna Beach’s Fête de la Musique is now included in this circle of live music celebration,” says LBSCA President Karyn Philippsen. “Anyone, any age, is invited to participate. Every genre of live performing music is welcome. Amateur musicians play alongside professionals, and the entire community engages in the experience. There is no admission fee charged and all are welcome to enjoy and participate in the festivities. Annual Enchanted Evening Fundraiser Nets $100,000 for Vocational Visions An estimated $100,000 in net proceeds was generated at Vocational Visions Enchanted Evening fundraising event that honored Pavilion’s Stores as its 2012 Employer of the Year. About 380 guests donned western attire for the “Enchanted Evening…with County Flair!” themed event at the Irvine Marriott Hotel. Pavilion’s has been instrumental in facilitating employment opportunities for men and women with developmental and other disabilities at seven of their south Orange County stores. Pavilion’s managers are committed to hiring Vocational Visions participants for long-term employment and go out of their way to accommodate their special scheduling needs. Chaired by community leaders Linda Baird and Donna Haskill, the event began with an expansive silent auction featuring over 175 items, followed by multi course dinner, awards presentation to Pavilions, live auction and live country western entertainment by Rodeo Drive. Master Sommelier Peter Neptune served as event emcee and auctioneer for the lively affair. An evening highlight was a heartwarming musical presentation by Vocational Visions participants including western dance routines to Walking After Midnight, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Happy Trails. Vocational Visions has provided comprehensive vocational, economic and social services to Orange County adults with disabilities since 1974. Based in Mission Viejo, Calif., the nonprofit organization creates possibilities for men and women with disabilities by providing on and off-site job opportunities, a variety of social programs and rehabilitation and medical assistance as needed. OCTA Deputy CEO Shares I-405 Project Updates With Newport / Balboa Rotary

Deputy CEO Darrell Johnson shares with the Newport / Balboa Rotary members the different alternatives under public review to improve the San Diego Freeway (I-405).

Deputy CEO Darrell Johnson presented to the Newport / Balboa Rotary last Wednesday on the I-405 Improvement Project. Johnson outlined the three build alternatives proposed for the I-405 freeway between the SR-73 and I-605 freeways and highlighted the increased mobility provided by each option. The trip reliability and increased throughput provided by Alternative 3 or the Express Lanes Alternative was of particular interest to some Rotarians who commute on I-405 to work in Los Angeles County. The OCTA team is conducting additional civic, business and community briefings throughout the I-405 Improvement Project public review period that is scheduled to conclude on July 2. Great Bulbs of Fire! and the Transit of Venus.

The Fullerton Arboretum has two exciting classes coming up in the coming week. On Saturday, June 2nd, we have “Great Bulbs of Fire!” This class will teach you about California Native Bulbs and some more exotic varieties that are horticulturally suitable for this area and will thrive. Class begins at 9:00 AM and is $20/members and $25/non-members. On the following Tuesday, we welcome the Cal State Fullerton Physics department onto our grounds as they showcase the Transit of Venus, a once in a lifetime celestial event. This Summer, Drink Pink! By David White With Memorial Day behind us, summer has officially arrived. This means more time outside, and consequently, a different cocktail menu. For lazy days by the pool or at the beach, it’s hard to beat a piña colada, margarita, or other tropical drink. When enjoying a hot dog or hamburger at a barbeque, beer is the obvious choice. For wine drinkers, finding the perfect summertime match can be daunting. When lounging on the deck or patio, red wine can seem too heavy. And sometimes, that simple white wine is just, well, too simple. That’s why it’s hard to beat a crisp rosé when the weather is warm. It’s easy to dismiss pink wine. After all, most Americans associate rosé with cheap, sweet “blush” wines, like Sutter Home’s white Zinfandel. This style of wine traces its roots to the early 1970s. Back then, demand for white wine outpaced supply, so many California winemakers started producing white wine from red grapes, taking advantage of the fact that even red grapes give off white juice. In 1975, the winemaker at Sutter Home, Bob Trinchero, had a problem while making his white Zinfandel. A portion of the wine experienced a “stuck

fermentation,” meaning the yeast died before all the sugar had converted into alcohol. Rather than “fix” the wine by adding more yeast, Trinchero decided to let it sit for two weeks. When he revisited the wine, he knew it would be a hit -- and Sutter Home’s modern-day white Zinfandel was born. Countless imitators would soon follow. This style of pink wine remains quite popular and it will always have fans. More often than not, though, white Zinfandel and other blush wines are just too sweet. Many taste more like Kool-Aid or strawberry fruit punch than wine. True rosés are bone dry, textured, and refreshing. And they can be just as complex and food friendly as traditional wines. True rosés are made in one of two ways. In the first method, the winemaker crushes red wine grapes and leaves the juice in contact with the skin for a brief period, typically one or two days. She then discards the skins, allowing the juice to finish fermentation on its own. Thanks to the short period of skin contact, the wine retains some color. Here, rosé is the only goal. In the second method, rosé is a byproduct of red wine fermentation. Red wine obtains color, tannin, struc-

ture, and flavors from grape skins. If a winemaker wants to increase the skin-to-juice ratio during fermentation, she can simply remove some juice at an early stage. This pink juice can be fermented separately to create rosé. This method is known as saignée. True rosés have been a part of life in France for centuries. In the southeastern part of the country, residents and visitors alike have long recognized the splendor of pairing rosé with warm weather and coastal cuisine. France remains the source of many fantastic rosés - great examples can be found in Bandol, Tavel, Sancerre, and many other regions. When looking for French rosés, it’s best to look for reliable importers, like Kermit Lynch, Beaune Imports, Weygandt-Metzler, and Robert Kacher. All four bring in a number of knockout wines. Plenty of delightful pink wines come from outside France, as well. Across the world, more and more producers are making top-notch, authentic rosés. In the United States, some producers to look for include Alexander Valley Vineyards, which makes a splendid rosé of Sangiovese, Copain, and Ponzi. Another favorite is made by Mulderbosch in South Africa. The world is still awash in bad rosés,

of course. It’s still quite easy to accidently wind up with a bottle that’s too heavy, alcoholic, or sweet. So if your local wine shop offers tastings, be sure to stop in when rosés are open - you might find a crisp, refreshing wine that’s worth stocking up on. Concept Cars - Cars that Never Left the Garage! Concept cars are generally made just for one purpose- to test a concept. Manufacturers use the concept cars to test customer reaction to new styles or technology they are planning to use in their future productions. These types of cars are used in Auto shows, where the customers are given a sneak-preview. After gauging their reactions, the designs undergo changes before they are made road-safe or cost effective. Many just end up being destroyed or some really good ones end up in Museums. Few of the top concept cars which never saw the light are listed below:

BMW M1 1) 21st Century BMW M1 One of the top auto manufacturers in the world, BMW had created the BMW M1 in the early ‘70s. In 2008, to mark the 30th anniversary of their first and only mid-engine-car, they revealed their new BMW M1. It was created as homage to the original one. The classic Liquid Orange Metallic paintwork, popup headlights with recessed lamps, squinting front end reflect the classic M style. The original M series was powered by a 207kW 3.5-litre inline six-cylinder that propelled the car to a super speed of about 260km/h. The new version would surely have surpassed that. To the dismay of many car-lovers, the manufacturers for some reason did not go any further and the car never went into production.

And the vehicle can run on only four cylinders or 16 at a time. This would be useful when maneuvering over difficult terrains. Again, the cost to mass-produce such a vehicle would be enormous and the Jeep Hurricane was also put on the shelf.

Well, that is what “Concept” is all about. Some of the features from these ideas, if not in its entirety, can be seen in other models which have been made by the above companies. So, some good has come out of these concepts. Still, wouldn’t it be cool to have one of the above mentioned spectacular vehicles to call your own!!

HISTORIC LE MANS RACERS AND OTHER CLASSIC CARS BRING HISTORY TO LIFE AT THIS MONTH’S CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE More than 250 classic cars and vintage motorcycles will line the St. Regis golf links during the Concours Historic Le Mans racers and some of the most famous collectible car marques in the world will be featured during the 30th anniversary HYPERLINK “http://www. danapointconcours.org” Dana Point Concours d’Elegance® on June 23-24, at the St. Regis Monarch Beach resort in Dana Point, Calif. As part of a field of more than 250 American and European autos, the event will honor “Legends of Le Mans: Racing in the ‘60s,” as well as the 50th anniversary of Shelby American. Enthusiasts will enjoy a rare opportunity to see a special collection of cars owned by Checkered Flag 200 Founder Bruce Meyer, along with a variety of classic cars and motorcycles from across the country. “We’re bringing together one of the greatest show fields ever in Southern California,” said Jeff Spellens, president of the Dana Point Concours. “The variety and quality is truly breath-taking. A trio of cars that represent the Golden Era of Le Mans will sit near examples from the Nethercutt Museum. Nearby, American hot rodder Carroll Shelby’s legendary cars will be parked close to Ducati’s that raced decades ago. We’ll bring history to life through some of the most important cars ever built.” As part of the Le Mans celebration Dana Point Concours will display rare competition cars from Ferrari, Shelby, Chevrolet and Jaguar. From the collection of the 2012 Dana Point Concours d’Elegance Automotive Icon Award recipient Bruce Meyer is a 1961 Ferrari 250 SWB that won its class at Le Mans in 1961. Placing third overall, this classic won the Manufacturer’s Championship for Ferrari. Meyer will also exhibit the first Corvette to compete in the 24 hour endurance race. Owned and sponsored by Briggs Cunningham in 1960, the team finished eighth over-all and First in Class. The Corvette’s mortal enemy will also be present as Meyer’s displays a 1962 Shelby Cobra, which was the first production Cobra ever built. Like all the original Cobra’s, it was originally a street car, then modified by Ford Racing of Europe to FIA specifications, including a 289 c.i.d. engine, rack-and-pinion steering, Weber carbs and flares. Cobras were a mainstay of Le Mans racing in the 1960s. Dana Point Concours Unveils Feature Cars Line-up (page 2/3) One of the most famous endurance racers a decade earlier, a 1956 Jaguar Factory Team Longnose D-Type is scheduled to be exhibited at the Concours. One of six long nose D-Types constructed during 1956 as a factory team car, this beautiful racer carries the serial-number

of XKD604. It was the only ‘56 D-Type to compete with an independent de Dion rear suspension. Recipients of the coveted Best of Show award last year, the Nethercutt’s will return with three beautiful vehicles from their private collection. The group includes a front-wheel drive 1930 Ruxton, which is one of less than 500 built. It features unusual horizontal bands of color to emphasize the long-low silhouette of the body. Body number 23, the Ruxton generates 100 horsepower, which was a stunning achievement at the time. Another vehicle from the Nethercutt collection is a 1932 Ford 18 hot rod originally built by legendary hot rod builder Tom “Itchy” Otis. It sports genuine 1932 Ford components on the chassis and body with a 327 c.i.d. Corvette engine and fourspeed transmission. A second ‘32 Ford Atterbury roadster hot rod built by Dick “Magoo” Megugorac will also be displayed from the collection. Commissioned by George & Darcy Atterbury, this awardwinning ‘32 “Deuce” roadster features a supercharged 350 c.i.d. Chevy V8. “The eclectic collection of vehicles at the Concours represents some of the very best examples of notable automotive marques in the world,” noted Spellens. “From Ferrari to Ford, General Motors, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Shelby and Kurtis Kraft, each of these vehicles come with a unique and impressive history.” To honor 50 years of Shelby American, the Concours will highlight vehicles from the manufacturer, including a Nightmist Blue on black 1967 Shelby GT500. Restored to factory-specifications, this GT500 is fully documented by Shelby American Automobile Club and is one of only four delivered to Spain for the festival of Seville in 1967. The Shelby was then

used as a display car at the festival of Barcelona later that year. A 1953 Kurtis Kraft 500 M will exhibit on the St. Regis golf links. Frank Kurtis, who designed the M model sport car, built only 18 examples and had the bodies manufactured by Robert McCulloch. This 500 M is one of only nine still known to exist and comes with a correct Cadillac V8, 331 c.i.d. engine and original Edelbrock intake with Stromberg carburetors. Mercedes-Benz will be represented with a pristine 1957 220S Cabriolet. Only 3,429 total 220S Cabriolet’s were produced between 1956 and 1959. This

Mercedes-Benz features a Type M180, six-cylinder engine and was hand-built at Sindelfingen to the very highest standards set forth by the European auto manufacturer.
