the history of the orange county fair
Shortly after Orange County was created in 1889, the Orange County Community Fair Corporation was formed. This group put on a small fair in 1890 that included a horse race and a few exhibits in Santa Ana. In 1894, another group, the Orange County Fair Association, Inc., took over The first Orange County Fairs were primarily livestock exhibitions and horse races. At the turn of the century, a “carnival of products” was added and the Fair became an annual event. In ensuing years, the Fair was held in Santa Ana, but after World War I it was moved to Huntington Beach for two years and then back to temporary grounds on East Fruit Street in Santa Ana. In 1916, the Fair was taken over by the newly organized Orange County Farm Bureau. The first OC Fair Board was elected in 1925 and the Fair re-
located to Anaheim, across the street from the Orange County Hospital. In 1925, a rodeo and carnival were added to the Fair. OC Fair Clowns After World War II, the state formed the 32nd District Agricultural Association and made it responsible for the Fair. The state
then purchased land occupied by the Santa Ana Army Air Base and some of it was earmarked for a new fairground. The Fair was first held at the new site in 1949 and it soon was designated as the permanent Fairgrounds. In 1953, the City of Costa Mesa was incorporated - the new
city included the Fair’s location. From 1949 to the present, the OC Fair has grown from a small, community, fiveday celebration to a 23-day festival that is one of Orange County’s most eagerly awaited annual events.

Chef Mar Cohen in a thoughtful and imaginative chef, who makes sure every dish leaving the kitchen is exquisitely plated, making the food as pleasing to look at as it is to eat. With each plate serving as a blank canvas, Cohen’s culinary presentations were lauded as edible works of art. Originally from Baltimore, Cohen shows his allegiance to his hometown by bringing fresh fish and seafood to the forefront of his menus. In 1994, he was lured to the west coast by his current partners to be the opening chef and partner of 230 Forest Avenue. With the opening of 230, Cohen created the perfect stage for his distinctive cuisine. ride the OC Fair Express to the Fair OCTA is bringing back the OC Fair Express this Friday with additional service to accommodate the increase in fairgoers looking to save money and avoid the hassle of driving. The OC Fair Express will provide nonstop direct service from eight park and ride lots to the OC Fair from July 13 to Aug. 12. Buses will run hourly between approximately 2:30 p.m. and midnight on Friday and between 9:30 a.m. and midnight on Saturday and Sunday. OC Fair Express passengers also will receive a coupon good for $2 admission to the fair – a savings of $9 off the regular ticket price. “For the same price as a regular bus trip, fairgoers can enjoy a relaxing trip that will drop them off just steps from the gate,” said OCTA Chairman Paul Glaab, also the mayor of Laguna Niguel. “Nearly 26,000 people took advantage of the service last year, and we look forward to expanding the service and giving more people the opportunity to jump on board the savings.” Riders can board for a regular one-way fare of $1.50 and catch the service from two new locations this year, the Laguna Hills Transportation Center and Irvine Metrolink station. Locations include: Fullerton Park and Ride, 3000 W. Orangethorpe Ave. in Fullerton The Depot at Santa Ana, 1000 E. Santa Ana Blvd. in Santa Ana Goldenwest Transportation Center, 7301 Center Ave. in Huntington Beach Anaheim Canyon Metrolink Station, 1039 N.

MYSTERIOUS NEW SPECIAL EVENT AT THE FESTIVAL OF ARTS: “PAINTING WITH GHOSTS” FILM SCREENING WITH AWARD-WINNING FILMMAKER PHIL SAVENICK Master artists, mysteries and ghosts! On July 14, July 28 and August 4, Festival of Arts visitors get the chance to explore the enigmas of great artists Van Gogh, Picasso, Cezanne and Matisse with award-winning filmmaker Phil Savenick. In the video presentation “Painting with Ghosts,” Van Gogh’s ghost welcomes Phil to paint sunflowers in the garden outside his studio window; Picasso’s ghost is less inviting and kicks him out. Only after an intervention with Cezanne’s ghost does Phil get to see where Pablo made his magic… then it’s off to live in Matisse’s Villa Le Reve for a week to invoke the spirits and paint in the master’s studio. Festival visitors can expect the unexpected as the ghosts lead Phil on artistic adventures into the very heart and soul of their genius! “Festival visitors will be delighted,” said Martin Betz, director of exhibits, collection and education at the Festival of Arts. “We are proud to host Phil Savenick at the Festival. The ‘Painting with Ghosts’ series is not only educational; it’s simply a lot of fun. Who doesn’t like a good ghost story?” Festival visitors are encouraged to attend special screenings of “Painting with Ghosts”, followed by a fun-filled Q&A with the filmmaker, on July 14, July 28 and August 4 from 1pm–3pm in the Festival of Arts Forum Theater above Gina’s Alfresco. “Painting with Ghosts” is free with Festival admission.
The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters are sponsored in part by Acura, Cox Communications, Fidelity Investments, KOST Radio 103.5, the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, and The Orange County Register. GEAR UP FOR A LITTLE GUITAR ALONG WITH YOUR ORCHESTRA Enjoy “Spanish Nights and American Flair” in Irvine (for the first time in the Great Park), Lake Forest and Mission Viejo, plus pre-concert entertainment including Musical Playground for kids; and a food drive Featuring guitar ensemble Triada, the program includes light Spanish-flavored and American pops and classical tunes, plus popular patriotic songs Grab a lawn chair, pack a picnic and head to a nearby park for an evening of free outdoor music and entertainment when Pacific Symphony’s 2012 Target Symphony in the Cities (SITC) concert series celebrates summer with a mix of American and Spanish music (and more)! For the eighth year in a row, Target returns as the title sponsor for this popular event, which attracts thousands of people annually to parks throughout Orange County. This year’s concerts, “Spanish Nights and American Flair,” led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, take place in three cities: Mission Viejo’s Oso Viejo Park (July 28), Irvine’s Orange County Great Park (July 29) and Lake Forest’s Pittsford Park (Aug. 19). Featuring the popular guitar group Triada, the program offers light, Spanish-infused classical and pop music by Rodrigo and
Bizet, favorite patriotic songs and a little Tchaikovsky for good measure. For more information about these concerts, call (714) 755-5799 or visit PacificSymphony. org/SITC. “To complement our traditional Target Symphony in the Cities patriotic singalong, marches and, of course, the unforgettable moment when the children help me conduct the concert, we are pleased to offer an evening of Spanish-influenced music!” says Music Director Carl St.Clair. “From the sizzling overture to Bizet’s beloved opera ‘Carmen’ and the dances of the Farandole, to the famous Triada guitar quartet, we will have the audience smiling and tapping their toes! It will be another great time under our beautiful California summer sky!” For this evening of cool American favorites and hot Latin rhythms, the Symphony welcomes the brilliant guitar ensemble Triada, which combines the unique talents of Bulgarian brothers Nikola, Petar and Vasil and their sister Petya Chekardzhikov. Individually, the family members are virtuoso guitarists and their intuitive sense of synergy makes their performances appealing and unique. Triada tackles Latin-flavored gems such as Farandole from
“L’Arlesienne,” Suite No. 2 and tasty morsels from Bizet’s alluring “Carmen.” The audience is also treated to Triada performing a special arrangement of Rodrigo’s “Concierto andaluz” for four guitars. Plus, the concert includes selections from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker,” John Philip Sousa’s rousing “Hands Across the Sea,” a salute to our armed forces and a patriotic sing-along. All concerts get underway at 7 p.m., with the Symphony’s pre-concert Musical Playground, featuring many interactive and hands-on activities for children (including making an instrument, playing in a drum circle, visiting an instrument petting zoo and meeting Symphony musicians) beginning at 5:30 p.m. (in Irvine and Lake Forest); Mission Viejo’s “Prelude in the Park,” begins at 4 p.m. and offers an array of pre-concert festivities, with the Symphony’s Musical Playground beginning at 4:30 p.m. Prior to the concert—and back by popular demand—children are invited to take part in a conducting workshop led by Maestro St.Clair at 6:45 p.m., in preparation for assisting him lead Sousa’s “Hands Across the Sea” during the concert. Also, fourth- and fifth-grade students from Santa Ana Summer
Strings (a new violin program that is the result of a partnership between Pacific Symphony, Santa Ana Unified School District and the academic support program, THINK Together) are providing pre-concert entertainment at the Great Park. Attendees are encouraged to pack a few cans of food along with their picnic and help support neighbors in need. Look for donation barrels in each park: in Mission Viejo, South County Outreach in partnership with the City of Mission Viejo is planning to be on hand to accept donations; at the Great Park and in Lake Forest, Orange County Food Bank is accepting donations.

1st Annual “Wine & Dine” Benefit for Laura’s House Nets $15,000 Overlooking the Golf Course at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, around 100 guests were treated to culinary delights and tastings of wines from wine-growing regions throughout California all to benefit Laura’s House, a nonprofit whose mission is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence. The 1st Annual Wine & Dine event was a successful hit where guests dressed in “summer chic” attire. They were treated to an array of gourmet delights as they perused the silent auction Wine Wall, tasted wine selections from more than 30 wineries situated throughout California’s wine growing regions, and received expert advice on choosing wines from Master Sommelier Steve Poe, of Big Canyon Country Club. “We are very excited that our first annual ‘Wine & Dine’ event was such a great success, and we are thankful to those who joined us for a beautiful evening in Newport Beach,” said Margaret Bayston, CEO and Executive Director, Laura’s House. “The event helped us raise the much needed funds we need to support the programs and services for families who are impacted by domestic violence, while shining a light on this issue that affects so many individuals throughout the Orange County community.” Among the items featured on the gourmet menu for the 1st Annual Wine & Dine event were a selection of passed hors d’oeuvres including braised cocktail meatballs with Manchego cheese, pine nuts and spicy tomato sauce, and truffle and goat cheese beignets. Stationed menu items included imported and domestic cheese display with charcuteries, dried cranberries, peaches and walnuts; panzanella salad; asparagus, mushroom, parmesan and Italian sausage risotto; smoked scallop sliders with lime, arugula, greens and citrus aioli; open-faced prosciutto and Jarlsberg “Sandwich” with Granny Smith apples and watercress on rustic bread; goat cheese stuffed peppadew peppers with chimichurri sauce; Mexican bay shrimp cocktail with avocado and lime in an Asian spoon. The silent auction included wine tastings and tour experiences for Giracci Vineyards & Farms, Newport Beach Vineyards & Winery and AmByth Estate; a Wine Dinner at Canaletto Newport Beach; and, a Wine Wall including more than 100 bottles of wine from the Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast, Paso Robles and other wine growing regions around the world. Proceeds from the 1st Annual Wine & Dine event will be used support the programs and services that Laura’s House provides to families that are impacted by domestic violence throughout Orange County and beyond. Over the past eighteen years, Laura’s House has provided residential shelter and support services to nearly 3,500 families, and counseling, life skills education and legal assistance to over 40,000 individuals. The mission of Laura’s House is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and the behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence while creating a safe space in which to empower individuals and families affected by abuse. Easter Seals Free Online Screening Tool Easter Seals wants to ensure all children are meeting their developmental milestones and, if not, that they receive early intervention services. Easter Seals is providing online access for parents and caregivers to a free online screening tool, the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) typically used by doctors, therapists, professionals and educators, to easily track a child’s development. When parents or caregivers complete the ASQ at Easter Seals’ Make the First Five Count website they will find out if a child is developing typically or if there are concerns. If there are concerns parents will be referred to their local Easter Seals office or other service provider for follow-up. This free tool gives children a fighting chance to gain access to early intervention and treatment during their critical window of development from birth to age 5. The ASQ can be used by parents to monitor their child’s development and identify potential issues so concerns can be readily addressed to make sure a child is on track and ready to enter school. “Easter Seals uses the ASQ at our Child Development Centers as an effective first step toward identifying if a child can benefit from early intervention services,” says Betty Reckard, VP of Children’s Services at Easter Seals. “Now parents and caregivers can use the tool for their own children and they can also let family, friends and others know that this tool is available for free. Through early intervention we all can really make a difference for kids in the long-term.” Easter Seals “Make the First Five Count” campaign is supported by a grant from the CVS/Caremark Foundation. “Make the First Five Count” advocates for early intervention for kids through age five so they can have a chance for a good start in life and the opportunity to succeed. Visitors can also sign the online petition at the Make the First Five Count website or download a hard copy in English and Spanish. The petitions are delivered to federal and state political leaders in the fall to let them know it’s important to maintain early intervention funding. Page 16

If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage
