5 Best Dog Breeds for Families By Ashley L Do you have a child that is bugging you constantly for a dog? Are you running out of excuses for getting one? Maybe it’s time to add that new furry member to your family, but before you decide, there are a few key factors you should take into consideration. While we all tend to choose the cutest puppy we see, it’s not necessarily the best way to choose a dog. When looking for the perfect dog for your family, be sure to also consider size, temperament, your living situation, and cost of ownership. Gaining knowledge of these factors, will ensure you find the best suitable breed for your family’s lifestyle. With over 150 dog breeds to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming finding the right breed for you. So, to lend you a helping hand, I have compiled a list of 5 of the best known dog breeds for families. 1. Labrador Retriever Recognized by the AKC, as the most popular dog breed in the United States, these gentle and affectionate dogs make excellent pets for families. Smart, obedient, and devoted, Labs are good with children of all ages, as well as other dogs and pets. Although, they are known to be very friendly, they are also a very protective breed, and are great choices for those wanting added security for their family. As a member of the working class, Labradors are extremely energetic and require lots of exercise to stay healthy. 2. Golden Retriever Similar to the Labrador, Golden Retrievers are very sweet and affectionate family dogs that love pleasing their owners. Their patience and gentle disposition, make them great companions for children of all ages. Whether it’s chasing a ball, swimming in a lake, or hiking in the mountains, these highly intelligent animals are ready to take on any challenge that comes their way. Like other larger dog breeds, Golden Retrievers are extremely energetic and require daily exercise, to keep healthy and burn off excess energy. 3. Beagle Known to most as the hunting dog, these floppy eared hounds make great pets for families with children. They are very gentle, loving, and loyal animals with spunky personalities, that are sure to win over your heart. Although, Beagles are very intelligent animals, they have been known to be quite stubborn, and love to get into mischief. Their innate ability for tracking and curious nature often get these pups into trouble. For this reason, they do best in homes, with large fenced in yards, to provide security and decrease the chance of your pet running off. Beagles do well in most living situations, but are very energetic and require lots of exercise. 4. Bulldogs Don’t let their tough exterior fool you, Bulldogs are one of the most gentle dog breeds and have a very sweet personality. Their thick, rugged build make them an excellent choice for families with rambunctious children. Although, they are not the most energetic of dog breeds, they love to play and require lots of attention. The Bulldog’s mellow attitude make them a great indoor pet, and perfect for families who live in apartments or have small yards. 5. Dachshund Nicknamed the “weiner dog”, for its hot dog shaped appearance, Dachshunds have been a family favorite for years. Their short, stubby legs and long, floppy ears are sure to make you smile. Similar to the Bulldog, Dachshunds are definitely not the most energetic breed, but love attention and make great indoor pets. Although, they tend to be shy around new people, they adapt well to most living environments, and get along great with other pets and children of all ages.

Dog Obedience Training - How to Teach Your Dog Basic Obedience Commands By Crystal Ray Obedience training can make a remarkable difference in a dog’s behavior, and every dog can benefit from obedience training. After successful obedience training, a dog that was once out of control becomes alert to the commands of his owner, and a dog with obedience training often calms down considerably. There are dog obedience classes available for professional assistance in dog obedience training, but you can begin obedience training at home. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your dog picks up your commands, and your dog will benefit from obedience training at home before beginning formal obedience training classes. The following information will help you teach your dog basic obedience commands. Most dogs will be able to pick up these obedience commands relatively fast. After your dog learns these basic commands, your dog will be ready to begin other training that will turn your dog into an obedient well-behaved family member that you’ll be proud to take in public. Praising and Reprimanding Your Dog Before beginning home obedience

Page 4

training with your dog, it’s important to know how to properly praise and reprimand your dog. When your dog successfully obeys a command, praise your dog calmly and quietly by gently rubbing his head and saying “good dog.” If you get too excited when your dog obeys a command, your dog will think it’s time to play, and this will only encourage hyperactivity. If your dog is slow to learn obedience commands, don’t lose your patience with your dog. Never hit your dog or raise your voice when he doesn’t properly preform a specific command. This type of behavior won’t help your dog learn the command. It will only instill unnecessary fear in your dog. A dog who is scolded during obedience training will consider obedience training an unfavorable experience. The more upset you become the more nervous you’ll make your dog, and in the end, he won’t learn a thing. Always use the same tone of voice and the same simple phrase when giving commands to your dog. Changing the pitch of your voice or changing the words in a command will only confuse your dog. Consistence and kindness are the keys to successful obedience

The Newport News

training. Before Beginning Obedience Training People often make the mistake of trying to teach their dog commands without the use of a leash. A long leash is required to properly teach your dog obedience commands. A leash will allow you to guide the dog, and a leash will help him understand what he’s suppose to do. A pocketful of treats is also quite helpful during obedience training. When your dog successfully executes a command, offer him a tasty treat as a reward as well as verbal praise and a pat on the head. Don’t offer a treat every time your dog obeys a command. Treats are helpful during training, but they shouldn’t be required after your dog understands what you expect of him. Sit Command Teaching a dog to sit is one of the easiest commands a dog will learn, and this command is often the first lesson in obedience training. A dog must first learn to sit on command before he will be able to learn other commands. To teach your dog to sit, push your dog’s hind end to the floor, and gently pull up on his leash while commanding him to sit. Immediately upon sitting, praise your dog and offer him a small treat for his efforts. Before long he’ll know exactly what you want him to do when you tell him to sit. Heel Command Heeling is a command all dogs should learn. Heeling is helpful when going for walks in crowded locations, and walking with a dog who heals is much more pleasant than walking with a dog who pulls and meanders. A heeling dog walks next to the left leg of the owner, and the dog’s nose is slightly in front of the knee. To teach your dog to heel, simply

command your dog to sit next to your left leg. Command your dog to heel while using his name. For instance say, “Frisky, heel,” and begin walking energetically forward. If the dog pulls ahead or lags behind, sharply yank the leash and command him to heel. If your dog doesn’t understand the command, walk briskly in the pattern of a figure eight. He will be forced to heal while walking in this pattern, and if you praise him he’ll eventually learn the command to heel. Eventually you’ll be able to walk your dog with slack in his leash while he heels properly. Stay Command Dogs instinctively want to follow their owners, but teaching a dog to stay really isn’t very difficult. Dogs live for love and praise, and even the most rambunctious dogs can learn to stay. To teach your dog to stay, simply command your dog to sit next to your left leg while you loosely hold his leash. Place your palm downward, and a few inches from his nose. In a firm voice, tell him to stay. Walk several feet away, and if your dog stays where he is told, go back and praise him with a treat and a gentle pat on the head. If your dog follows, take him back to the original position and try it again. Eventually your dog will understand the command, and he’ll look forward to your praise. Come Command A dog must first learn to stay before you begin teaching him to come to you on command. Once the dog is good at staying on command, walk several feet away from your dog with his leash in hand, and tell him to come while facing him and gently tugging on his leash. When the dog comes to you praise him with a tasty treat and a pat on the head. After he becomes good at responding to this command, you’ll be able to remove his leash and increase the distance.

It’s only natural for man’s best friend to stay close by his master’s side, but for dog owners who drive frequently, bringing Fido along for the ride can be risky. The problem is particularly worrisome for older drivers; a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham showed that for people 70 years and older, crash rates were higher among those who frequently drove with pets in the car. But for many drivers, leaving precious pets behind isn’t an option. The best compromise is to find solutions that will get you from point A to point B without compromising the safety of human or animal passengers. Distracted driving is a growing concern and a loose pet in the car certainly numbers among the potential hazards that can take your eyes - and mind - off the road and lead to accidents. While older drivers might not be as likely to be distracted by texting or smartphone surfing, even those who have spent many years navigating the roads need to honestly assess how having a pet in the car can divert their attention away from the road. To stay safe on the road when Fido is with you, remember these tips: * Don’t allow pets in the front seats. Having a pet sit on your lap is obviously distracting, but if he’s in the front passenger seat, the problem can be just as bad. In the front seats, your pet is more likely to be within your line of sight and obstruct your view of the road. An unrestrained dog in the front seats could also be easily injured if you have to slam on the brakes or

swerve, or are hit from behind. The force with which airbags deploy also poses a safety hazard for dogs in the front seat - if you’re in an accident and they inflate and hit your dog, he could easily sustain an injury. * Create separation. There are a variety of pet barriers on the market that can keep your pet from moving between the front and back seats of your car. Installing a barrier will help keep your pet out of your way and diminish concerns about him being propelled forward in case you have to make a sudden stop. * Restrain your pet. There are a number of options for pet restraints in your vehicle. Pet seatbelts and car seats will help keep a dog safely in place. Keeping a crate in the car is also a good option. Make sure it’s secured and large enough so that he can stand up, turn around and comfortably sit or lay down. Add a soft pad in the bottom of the crate and it might just become your pet’s favorite

new way to travel. * Brush up on your driving skills. Today’s driving environment is probably very different than it was when you first got your license. A refresher course, like those offered by AARP Driver Safety, is an ideal way to ensure that your skills are up to date. Brushing up on defensive driving techniques and the essential rules of the road will help keep everyone in your car safe - and you may even qualify for a multi-year automobile insurance discount from your insurance company (check with your agent for details). AARP Driver Safety courses are available in a classroom or online setting, in both English and Spanish. Pets are important members of the family, so it’s only right that drivers consider their safety, just as they would for any other passenger. For more safe driving tips and information about AARP Driver Safety, visit www. aarp.org/drive.

Choosing a Dog to Match Your Personality So, You’re Going to Get a Dog. That’s Wonderful and I Urge You to Consider Rescuing One from Your Local SPCA or Another Shelter L. V. Paganini So, you’re going to get a dog. That’s wonderful and I urge you to consider rescuing one from your local SPCA or another shelter. You’ll get a great pet and friend and save him/ her from being put down. There is usually a small fee which pays for the physical exam, getting neutered and possibly include a microchip. They normally have a large selection of dogs and some of them are puppies. I got my German Shepherd mix, Morgan, from my local animal shelter and have never regretted it. So, you’re going to get a dog. It’s time to decide how to select

your dog. It’s a good idea to match your dog to your personality - the things you enjoy doing and your lifestyle. If you’re a jock you’ll want an active dog. But if your idea, of exercise is kicking back on the couch with a good read, you’ll prefer a dog that doesn’t require a lot of exercise. Consider your lifestyle - if you work until late into the evening it will be difficult to exercise and play with your dog. Is there a neighbor who would spend some time with your pet during the day while you’re gone? (My exneighbors had three kids who loved to play with Morgan even when I was around. I’m sure Morgan is very sorry we moved.) Are you out of town a lot? If so, you’ll need to think about who will care for your pet while you’re gone. You want to find a pup that complements your personality and your lifestyle. Here are some characteristics of some the various breeds of dogs. Intelligent dogs • Australian Sheepdog • Belgian Sheepdog • German Shepherd • Keeshond • Poodle Dogs that don’t require much exercise • Brussels Griffon

• Dachshund • French Bulldog • Manchester Terrier • toy breeds (such as a Chihuahua or Pekingese) Good with kids • Beagle • Basset Hound • Brittany Spaniel • English Cocker Spaniel • Old English Sheepdog • Pug Good city dogs • Basenji • Boston Terrier • Bulldog • Lhasa Apso • Pug • Scottish Terrier • Welsh Corgi Quiet dogs • Basenji • Borzoi • Chesapeake Bay Retriever • Greater Swiss Mountain Dog • Whippet Friendly dogs • Bearded Collie • Brittany Spaniel • Bichon Frise • Golden Retriever • Labrador Retriever • Old English Sheepdog These are for purebreds but it’s a

very general rule of thumb. Morgan is a German shepherd/Burmese Mountain Dog and is very, very friendly. Consider try going to a dog show, a pet shop and a couple of trips to the local animal shelters. And, talk to friends who have dogs. If this sounds too much work, reconsider why you want a dog. They are a lot of work, albeit very rewarding work. If you take good care of your dog, he/she will be a wonderful companion. But, you must realize there will be chores to do, exercising and playing with your dog and the expense of feeding and caring for your pet.

3 Original Dog Biscuit Cookie Treat Recipes Your Dog Will Love By Slate Stone Natural Ingredients and Made with Love Treat Your Dog Today. You love your dog. Your dog loves dog treats. Why not whip up a batch of dog treats you can make as easily as a simple cookie recipe? Here are 3 tasty dog biscuit recipes sure to get your furry pal or pup happy and tail wagging and wanting to kiss you as he begs for more. It’s nice to be in control of the ingredients and food your dog eats, and what better way to get to his heart and stomach. These recipes are easy and real dog pleasers. Beefy Bark Bites Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour 1/2 cup powdered milk 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon wheat germ 2 teaspoons beef bouillon granules 1/4 cup softened margarine 1/4 cup bacon bits (you can use the jar kind sold in the grocery aisle where they sell salad dressings) 1 egg 1/2 cup ice water 2 tablespoons cold milk Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In

mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, powdered milk, wheat germ, and beef bouillon granules. Then stir in egg and softened margarine. Then stir in bacon bits. Then, a little at a time, stir in first the cold ice water and then the cold milk, so the dough becomes sticky. You can then drop the dough by the tablespoon full on an ungreased baking sheet to make dog cookies, or else if you prefer to make cute shapes, you can roll the dough out on a lightly floured board and use a simple shaped cookie cutter to make cookie shapes. Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees, then remove from oven and let cool before serving to your dog. You can wrap the cookies in plastic food storage bags and refrigerate until ready to use. Yum Yum Butter Bones Ingredients: 2 cups whole wheat flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 cup unsalted natural peanut butter 3/4 cup milk 1/4 cup applesauce (unsweetened, natural) 1 teaspoon honey Directions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In

mixing bowl, combine whole wheat flour, baking powder and milk. Stir in natural peanut butter, applesauce and honey. Blend thoroughly, so that ingredients are evenly distributed throughout. With hands, knead the dough until it forms into one big ball. Then wash and dry your hands and grease a couple of cookie sheets. Take the dough and roll into little balls and flatten between your hands and drop onto the cookie sheets spaced about an inch or so apart. Bake for 25 minutes in oven until firm or lightly golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool before serving. You can wrap the cookies in plastic food storage bags and refrigerate until ready to use. Hammy Whammy Treats Ingredients: 1cup wheat germ 1 jar (2.5 ounces) of strained Ham baby food (you can substitute strained beef baby food if you like) 1/2 teaspoon of beef bouillon granules

1 tablespoon grated mild cheddar cheese 2 teaspoons milk Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In mixing bowl, combine wheat germ, baby food, bouillon granules, and milk. Roll into dough with hands and then work in cheese. Lightly grease cookie sheet. Roll dough into small balls about 1 inch in size and gently pat with hands and place on cookie sheet. You can lightly press the cookies with a cold fork to make a criss cross pattern, the way you would press peanut butter cookies. Bake for approximately 20 minutes and remove from oven and cool before serving. You can wrap the cookies in plastic food storage bags and refrigerate until ready to use.

Pacific Symphony Celebrates Opening & Raises $165k for Artistic and Education Programs Co-chairs Nick and Karlyne Greenko with Ruth Ann and John Evans pose with dancers.

Photos by: Nicholas Koon Photography More than 270 guests decked out in black-tie regalia gathered at the Center Club in Costa Mesa to celebrate Pacific Symphony’s 35thanniversary season opening night. The evening of Russian splendor, “Rachmaninoff - From Russia with Love,” rolled out a variety of treats, revealed one after another like Russian nesting dolls. Hosted by the Symphony’s board of directors and co-chaired by Ruth Ann and John Evans and Karlyne and Nick Greenko, the grand event included a pre- and post-concert reception, dinner, entertainment and the first concert of the 2013-14 Hal and Jeanette Segerstrom Family Foundation Classical Series: “Conrad Tao Plays Rach 3,” led by Music Director Carl St.Clair. The dinner and party, presented by South Coast Plaza with support from retail partner Omega at Tourbillon Boutique, raised $165,000 in support of the Symphony’s artistic and education programs. “We were thrilled the evening was such a success and exceeded its fundraising goal,” says co-chair Nick Greenko. “It was an elegant, intimate affair with wonderful overtones of Old Russia and full of people delighted to be Bill Gillespie poses with Susan St. Clair, and Carl St. Clair, Music there. Dancers from the UCI corps de ballet and a soprano from the Pacific Director of the Pacific Symphony. Chorale singing the Rachmaninoff ‘Vocalise’ added an even deeper dimension to the event and we are so pleased at the collaboration we have between the symphony, the Chorale and UCI.” The night of Russian merriment began with a swanky cocktail reception, where high-top tables were draped in gold, black and teal and accented with flowers. Guests mingled while sipping wine and “Tolstoy Tangs” (lemon and vodka cocktails) and munching on an array of hors d’oeuvres. The musical trio Third Wheel played live music and five members of the UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts, Department of Dance delighted onlookers by performing Russian folk dances. Attendees were then escorted into the Grand Ballroom, adorned in Russian elegance with teal tablecloths and gold and crystal candelabra centerpieces decked out with candles, purple roses, white hydrangeas, gilded gardenia foliage and pieries. The Symphony’s board Chairman Michael Kerr welcomed guests and thanked fellow board members and event sponsors. As they dined, guests were treated to a performance of Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise” by soprano Kellee King accompanied by pianist David Clemensen. At the conclusion of the meal and at the center of the grand evening was, of John Daniels and Sandy SegerPianist Conrad Tao performing course the concert taking place across the arts plaza in the Renée and Henry strom Daniels. on stage during Concert. Segerstrom Concert Hall. Led by St.Clair, the program was full of drama and thundering piano, as internationally celebrated pianist Conrad Tao, just 19 years old, provided a dazzling display of virtuosity, tearing into Rachmaninoff’s demanding Piano Concerto No. 3 (featured in the 1996 hit movie “Shine”). Already an audience favorite, Tao was returning for his third appearance with the Symphony. Hailed as both an “exciting prodigy” and “breathtaking,” Tao gave a jaw-dropping performance of the highly demanding and muchloved work - drawing multiple standing ovations and resulting in an encore that delighted the audience. The program, which opened with the short and jubilant “Festivities” by California-based composer Peter Boyer (who was in attendance), concluded with Brahms’ monumental Symphony No. 4, a piece that was sweeping with melodic writing and dual emotions of joy and sorrow. The Opening Night celebration continued with a private intermission reception in the Box Circle lobby of the concert hall. At the conclusion of the performance, guests were welcomed back to the Center Club’s Encore Lounge for a post-concert party to enjoy champagne, a variety of Russian chocolates, other candy and desserts, plus music by The Joey Sellers Quartet. An appearance by the star of the evening, Conrad Tao, was the cherry on the cake. Hot tips for cool crops: Get growing on your fall garden You might think the end of summer means bidding farewell to fresh, homegrown veggies. Not so - many cool-season crops hit their heyday as autumn temperatures drop, and some even taste better when nipped by a light frost. As long as their basic growing conditions are met, vegetable plants don’t care what season it is. If you live in a warmer climate, you may be able to grow your fall garden all winter long. If, however, you live in a colder area, your growing season will be shorter. In most regions of the country, gardeners plant fall vegetables in August or September for harvest in October and November. You’ll need to carefully calculate your growing season so you can ensure plants have time to produce before freezing weather arrives. Generally, you should plant fall vegetables when daytime temperatures range between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (the cooler the better); night temperatures should be above 40 degrees, and you’ll need enough sunshine to ensure plants will get at least six hours of sun per day. You’ll also need to give plants at least an inch of water per week. To get started, remove all the debris left over from your summer garden so fall crops have plenty of room to grow. Add compost to your garden beds and

landscapes. Soil should be light, wellaerated and well-draining - since fall gardens are more likely to get soggy from rain. Mulch will keep the soil cool and moist during the last days of summer. You can also mix in an all natural fertilizer like Bonnie Plants, Herb and Vegetable Plant Food, made from soybean oilseed extract, known to contain 150,000 nutritional and organic compounds that include vitamins, minerals, amino acids and proteins, enzymes, plant hormones and carbohydrates. All are vital to plant growth. Next, find out your local frost and freeze dates. For most areas, frost doesn’t have to end the fall growing season. Monitor your local weather forecast during late September and early October so you know when frost is coming. Once you know your local frost and freeze dates, you can begin planning - and planting - your fall garden. Remember, when growing vegetables in the fall, plants need to be in the ground in time to mature before the first frost, and to yield most of their harvest before the first heavy freeze. Some cool-season crops mature in as little as 30 to 40 days, while others may take several months to produce. Since time is of the essence when planting a fall garden, start out with transplants that are already growing.

Choose fast-maturing varieties, like Bonnie Plants, to get the most for your harvest. The gardening experts at Bonnie suggest these fall crops: * Winterbor kale - This vigorous producer weathers winter easily, even in very cold climates. Cut outer leaves so that the center can continue growing. Space transplants about 12 inches apart * Georgia collards - Another leafy green similar to kale, Georgia collards are prized for their sweet, cabbage-like flavor. Space transplants 36 inches apart. * Romaine lettuce -- Romaine packs more vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients than other popular types of lettuce. Space transplants 18 inches apart. * Early dividend broccoli - Popular, productive and easy to grow, this broc-

coli is high in fiber and calcium. Set transplants 18 inches apart. * Mustard greens - Offering spicy hot leaves, this is a very fast-growing, nutritious vegetable. Mustard greens always taste sweeter when nipped by frost. Space plants 12 inches apart. * Bonnie hybrid cabbage - Bonnie’s best cabbage is high in beta-carotene, vitamins C and K, and fiber. Space transplants 24 inches apart. * Arugula - These fast-growing leafy greens are super-food for your bones. The leaves are “nutrient dense” and low in calories. Leaves grow best in cool weather. You can continue to enjoy fresh, homegrown vegetables through fall and even into winter when you start with some expert knowledge and the right plants. To learn more about growing a fall garden visit www. bonnieplants.com.

Creating Personal Space for Your Dog By Threesia Goff If you’re a dog owner, you likely know how important it is to provide your dog with a space of their own inside your home. That space doesn’t have to be huge or anything fancy, dogs just need a small corner where they can retreat when they feel overwhelmed. One great place is under a large end table because the table is already using up space, and it’s secluded enough to make the dog feel secure. Now that we know what type of area is a good fit, let’s think about what to put in that area. Here are a couple of things you can add to your dog’s personal space, and what you should leave out. A dog bed There are many different dog beds on the market today, and some can be quite expensive. My dog, Daisy currently has three beds in different areas of the house, and I’m planning to make her a fourth. If you are a crafty person like me, who likes to crochet, you can make your dog a bed with a little effort and with little more than a few skeins of yarn. Here are four free pet bed crochet patterns to choose from. 1 Skein Pet Bed Crocheted Dog Bed Pet Bed from Recycled Sweaters

on. Giving your dog something of their own to use for nesting in their private space is a good idea. Daisy likes any type of blanket, old shirts, and even old towels. If I don’t give her something to use she will steal something from around the house. What to leave out of the space Since this is a place the dog can go when he/she wants, there is no need to have things like food or water in the
