To p T e n B ac k -To - Sc h o o l Car s f or 2013- 2014 By Rhonda Manning Tools for school have become more high-tech, not to mention more costly since I attended high school and college. Today, there are 9.5 million young adult drivers on the road. Parents not only shop for pens, paper, notebooks, and backpacks, now they make a trip to their local car dealer. When it comes to selection, safety and style rank high. Parents also consider such factors as cost, value, and fuel economy. Kelley Blue Book (KBB.com), a well-known source for new and used car information, has come out with their choice of cars for student drivers to begin the new 2013-2014 school year. Something else parents will be glad to note-the price is right on most of the models, which start below $20,000. Here are KBB.com’s top 10 recommendations: #10 2014 Fiat 500L

Aesthetic-wise, this is my favorite car. It’s cute and it even looks economical. The 500L makes for a roomier interior that can easily seat up to 5 passengers. Loading and unloading is a breeze with a hatchback and ample space in the back. The fuel economy isn’t bad either: 24 for the city; 33 highway, and 27 combined miles per gallon. I call it Euro elegance that handles well! #9 2013 Subaru Impreza

Versatility is the best feature of the Impreza. This Subaru boasts standard features such as Bluetooth and iPod controls, all-wheel drive, and cargo-hauling. Either a sedan Page 2

or hatchback will appeal to practical students or those with busy lifestyles. The fuel economy is decent with a combined mpg of 30; 27 city and 36 highway.

#5 2013 Honda Civic

#8 2013 Toyota Prius C

If gas mileage is a priority, then this is your car! Zip around the city in this cute little baby and you’ll get a whopping 53 mpg! Tops in the car industry. Yes, it’s a hybrid that can possibly save you a bundle. Add to that the Toyota name and their years of manufacturing America’s favorite cars, and you are off to a great start for the school year. Cha-ching! #7 2013 Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf is German engineering with an attitude that is gentle on the pockets. The entire car design, a sporty hatchback, fits a student’s lifestyle with ease. The fuel economy is average, with a combined mpg of 26. #6 2013 Kia Sportage

Though mileage isn’t one of this car’s attractions, being selected as a 2103 IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick is one of the Sportage’s best features. A very comforting fact when your teen is behind the wheel. The price tag is parent-friendly, and so is the warranty, which is lengthy.

The Newport News

How amazing that you can still get this gem-of-a-car for under $20,000! I bought my daughter a Honda Civic back in 2004 for $18,000. Now, that’s value! Built to last, she drove it for years. Two-door coupe or 4-door sedan, you can’t go wrong with a Honda. The Civic gets good mileage, too at 28 city, 39 highway, and a combo mpg of 32. #4 2013 Mazda MAZDA3

Our number 4 car, the MAZDA3, has another distinction parents may find value-worthy. It has been featured on KKB.com’s list of 10 Coolest Cars Under $18,000 every year of its existence. Plans are to introduce a new MAZDA3 in 2014, so finding a good deal on this 2013 model should be a breeze. Plus, the MAZDA3 gets a hefty 40 mpg on the highway. Time to ride! #3 2014 Chevrolet Sonic

First, let me welcome an American car to the list. And, I am happy it is a Chevy! Very popular back in the day! This Chevy is sharp and the hatchback design resembles the Volkswagen Golf. It’s compact and sporty. You can also get this little beauty in a sedan. There is so much to love about the Chevy Sonic. Let’s start with the fuel economybetween 37-40 mpg on the highway. Impressive. How about 10 airbags? And, are you ready for this? The cost is just below $15,000. Sweet! #2 2014 Ford Focus

Here’s another nod to American car manufacturing at its best. Because of its sleek design and contemporary appointed interior, the Ford Focus can easily stand proud next to its European counterparts. Its good looks, Euro-flavor, top safety ratings, and impressive fuel economy make the Ford Focus an all-around great car. Yoo-hoo for the US! #1 2014 Nissan Versa Note Our A #1, list topper is a zippy compact that designers didn’t cut corners with its style or beauty, plus they added versatility to boot. The 2014 Nissan Versa Note features a new-tech interior, 40 mpg on the highway, 5-door hatchback styling, and a price that starts under $15,000. Did I hear the word s-a-v-i-n-g-s? Versa Note will look fabulous on a high school or college campus. Need I say more? It’s back to school in style!

tech trends that keep kids in touch Chances are your young kids love to play games on their tablets or even your smartphone, and your teens and college students rely on technology to stay in touch with friends. But as they head back to school, keep in mind technology can also help students discover the joy of learning, and keep them on track with their schoolwork. “Technology is a natural part of learning for kids today,” says Conor Kearney, vice president of computing for office supply giant Staples. “And where once teachers might have viewed technology in the classroom as a distraction, today they are finding ways to integrate it into lessons - and helping students connect with material through the technology they already love.” As your children head back to school, here are a handful of tech trends that can help make the school year more productive and fun: Chromebooks put the shine on learning - Chromebooks are easyto-use, lightweight laptops that run the popular Google operating system. Their portability and ease of use make them perfect for youngsters just learning how to use technology in the classroom. Samsung, HP and Acer all offer Chromebooks, and you can find them in Staples stores across the country or online at Staples.com.

Page 4

And talking about tablets - Smaller, lighter weight and powerful, tablets are a great alternative to full-sized laptops, fitting easily into backpacks and totes. Tablets such as the Microsoft Surface, Google Nexus, Samsung Galaxy, Samsung Note 8.0 and Kindle Fire HD help students stay connected online and in and out of the classroom. There’s an app for that - No conversation about technology is complete without the right software to complement your hardware. Learning apps abound, so start out by consulting with your child’s teacher to see if he or she will be working with students using a specific app or website this year. Then head over to pcmag.com for reviews and information on the best learning apps for children. Accessories make the tech Although technology is becoming more durable every year, most kids can still use some help keeping their tech tools in good shape. Jansport sleeves combine fashion and function in a wide assortment of tablet sleeves and laptop cases. Kids can choose from animal prints to plaids and even neon accents. For those who want to combine the roominess of a backpack with the protection of a laptop case, the Jansport Superbreak Sleeve is a durable and fashionable option.

Free university learning Parents who purchase a qualified touchscreen laptop from Staples can also enroll their college-age students in Microsoft Office 365 University for free. The program (usually sold for $79.99) provides students with four years of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, OneNote and Outlook for free. To b e e l i g i b l e , purchasers must show valid college/university identification or an original acceptance letter to a postsecondary school along with their photo ID. Making it all easy - Wireless networking, cloud backup, data protection - it c an all get pretty confusing for a parent. F o r t u n a t e l y, Staples EasyTech associates have the expertise and answers to help. They offer a variety of tech services for just $99 each, including setting

up your student’s PC, getting your data vault (including cloud backup, Internet security and virus protection) up and running or coming to your home to make sure your wireless network is functioning properly.

Graduation season is over, but families with college-bound teens know the gift-giving season is still in full swing. Whether you’re looking for a gift that will ease the transition for a new college freshman or something to milestone the beginning of a senior’s final year, choosing a back-to-school gift can be every bit as important as selecting a graduation gift. A back-to-school gift is also your opportunity to demonstrate your uber-coolness, and pick something that will entertain, delight and empower your college kid. From items that will dress up any dorm, such as a removable wallpaper mural, to ones that will help them stay healthy, like an ergonomic backpack, back-to-school gifts need to be smart and exciting. Here are four gifts ideas that are sure to be both useful and enjoyable for college kids heading back to school this fall: 1. Dorm-dazzling decor Despite fairly recent efforts by some schools to make dorms more appealing, dorm rooms are still hardly a decorator’s dream canvas. Bright, cheerful bedding can help add personality and comfort, but the walls are the biggest workable space for decorating, and often they start out bland. Painting is out of the question, so rock band posters have long been a staple of college dorm decor. For wall decor that really rocks, however, consider giving the college student in your life a creative teen mural from Murals Your Way that clings to virtually any flat surface using space-age technology and no

adhesives of any kind. You can choose from a wide range of sizes and scenes, from a full wall cityscape to a window-sized sports theme. You can even customize a mural so your college student can decorate her dorm with an image of friends, family or a favorite memory from high school. Log on to www. muralsyourway.com/ to learn more and view available images. 2. Super storage - Sure, a dresser or bureau will probably come with the dorm room, and if he’s lucky he may even have a wallet-sized closet. But college kids have a lot of stuff to store t h r o u g h o u t t h e s c h o o l y e a r. Creative storage solutions that are functional and fun can be a great gift. Whether it’s a pocket sleeve that fits over the back of a standard desk chair to hold those items she needs at her fingertips, or an overthe-door shoe rack to keep all his athletic shoes off the floor, your storage gift can help a college kid stay organized. If the dorm room is big enough, consider storage that can do double-duty as extra seating, such as a foot locker. For smaller rooms, look for solutions that get stuff up off the floor, like cork boards for assignments and jewelry. 3. Safer technology solutions - It’s probably safe to say there’s no such thing as a totally tech-free college kid anymore. Laptops, tablets, smartphones and desktop PCs are all important tools for both school work

and fun. Your college student probably already has his favorite mobile device in hand, but you can help him protect it with safety solutions designed specifically for use in college. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for your student’s favorite device, and give her hardware specifically designed to deter theft, such as an alarm, security plate or cable lock. Ensure that even if his laptop does get lost or stolen, he won’t lose all his data by giving him a year’s subscription to an online backup service. 4. Better backpacking - A backpack is as much a staple of college life as heavy books and lots of studying. Overloaded backpacks, however, can cause back pain. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends limiting the heft of backpack contents to no more than 10 to 15 percent of the carrier’s body weight, but most college kids carry much more than that. Look for a backpack that’s designed to redistribute the weight of contents to minimize strain on the wearer’s back and shoulders. Fortunately, it’s easy to find plenty of good-looking, back-friendly backpack options, both in stores and online.

Go for it now. The future is promised to no one. ~Wayne Dyer The Newport News

Laguna College of Art and Design Announces Inaugural Exhibition in Their New Downtown Gallery, LCAD ON FOREST NEW SPACE, Laguna College of Art and Design’s (LCAD) appropriately titled inaugural exhibition at its new downtown gallery, LCAD ON FOREST, opens at 6:00 p.m. on October 03, 2013, during Laguna’s First Thursday Art Walk festivities. NEW SPACE, the first of ten scheduled exhibitions over the next ten months at LCAD ON FOREST, is comprised of meticulously detailed illustrations by award-winning illustrator, designer and LCAD Illustration faculty member, Luc Desmarchelier; original paintings by astronomical illustrator, fellow and founding member of the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA), Don Dixon; and spaceinspired collages by visual artist Janice Lowry. Curated by LCAD Gallery Director, Andrea HarrisMcGee, NEW SPACE is meant to inspire and embody the awe, wonder, dreams, adventure, ambition and quest for discovery that a gaze into the night sky has long aroused in humankind. LCAD’s Gallery Director, Andrea Harris-McGee noted, “It’s important for our students and the community to have access to works by artists of such merit. I look forward to presenting exceptional works of art that will

inspire and challenge our students, the community of Laguna Beach and beyond. LCAD ON FOREST is a venue that brings LCAD’s rich and diverse programming to the widest audience in the institution’s 52-year history. I look forward to seeing everyone from students, Laguna residents, industry leaders and visitors in the gallery soon.” Located at 225 Forest Avenue— and also known as ONE Laguna—the state-of-the-art collaborative space is the brainchild of Firebrand Media LLCChairman, Allan Simon. Simon and LCAD’s President, Jonathan Burke, conceived of the mutually beneficial partnership in which LCAD will occupy the ground level of the ONE Laguna building. LCAD ON FOREST will feature curated exhibitions and special programming that will bring unprecedented visibility to California’s leading higher educational institution of representational art. “I’m thrilled to be a part of extending the college’s presence from Laguna Canyon to downtown Laguna and being able to share our diverse gallery program with the community” added LCAD’s President, Jonathan Burke. On the building’s upper level, Simon and the ONE Laguna and Firebrand Media LLC staff are in the process of

developing a central, cutting edge, technology-based e-commerce portal that will connect Laguna Beach businesses, recreational activities and more to Orange County through the first-of-its-kind interactive and educational touchscreens and other computer-generated technologies. ONE Laguna will launch late in 2013 or early in 2014. Simon stated, “I’m pleased that we can be helpful to LCAD and to residents of Laguna and visitors to Laguna, who now can see more of LCAD’s great works. Upstairs at 225 Forest, Firebrand will be introducing a high technology experience in e-commerce, in contrast to the LCAD gallery below. We hope that “where art meets technology” will become a destination point for a diverse set of visitors to our facility.” Closing out the year at LCAD ON FOREST are The Art of John K and ALIVE: Moving Nature. Both exhibitions will open at 6:00 p.m. during Laguna Beach’s November 2013 First Thursday Art Walk festivities and will remain on view through Thursday, December 19, 2013. The Art of John K, curated by LCAD’s Chair of Animation and Laguna Beach High School alumni, Dave Kuhn, will feature work from

John Kricfalusi the famed creator of The Ren & Stimpy Show. Kricfalusi is also the creator of the world’s first interactive web-based cartoon and founder of animation studio Spümcø. ALIVE: Moving Nature, curated by LCAD’s Gallery Director, Andrea Harris-McGee and presented in collaboration with the Laguna Art Museum’s Art & Nature initiative will feature works by artists Ellen Jantzen, Misako Inaoka, Barry Underwood and more.

Photos by: Carla Rhea Mission San Juan Capistrano’s Romance of the Mission benefit gala featured a spectacular concert by actress/singer Susan Egan and estimates net proceeds at $220,000. Over 400 guests were on hand to experience an elegant evening under the stars highlighted by honoring longtime Mission San Juan Capistrano supporter and former Mission Preservation Foundation Board member Mike Hagan. Event proceeds will further the preservation of historic Mission San Juan Capistrano including the initial investigation work necessary for conserving the historic Sala building. Mission San Juan Capistrano Executive Director Mechelle Lawrence Adams was joined by Mission Preservation Board President George O’Connell to welcome guests and recognize the extensive support and commitment of 2013 honorary chair Mike Hagan. Attendees then stepped through the historic Resurgam displaying artifacts from the Mission’s collection into the Main Courtyard for a gourmet plated Matt Griffin, Barb and Don Beier and Krysti Griffen four-course candlelight dinner masterfully prepared and served by The RitzCarlton, Laguna Niguel. Lawrence Adams commented, “Tonight is about celebrating all that we’ve accomplished since last year’s event and honoring both past and present donors. New traditions this year included the first-time ringing of the bells at 6:00 p.m. to officially commence the evening festivities, then our guests entering the Mission’s front gardens through the new Gate House Entry and Mission Store.” The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange Bishop Kevin Vann led the invocation prior to dinner. During a short program, Gala committee members were recognized by Don Dorkowski and The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel’s General Manager Bruce Brainerd and Mission Preservation board member Connie Spenuzza drew opportunity drawing winners for a Ritz-Carlton get-a-way; vintage pendant, ring and earrings by Barbara Parkers, Inc.; a diamond cross by Roberto Coin; and a “Shop and Sip” event at the Mission Store. Cru Beaujolais: Fresh, Vibrant, and Perfect for Early Fall HAPPY GRAPES

By David White All wines are appropriate for all seasons. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying a simple white or crisp rosé in the winter, and big reds work all year long. But our diets change with the weather. Just as we look forward to watermelon and fresh-from-thegarden tomatoes in the summer, we crave soups, stews, and roasts in winter. So our go-to wines change, as well. As the fall begins, I find that I’m craving a light red with virtually every dinner. Cru Beaujolais almost always does the trick, as its vibrant acidity and freshness offer a refreshing pairing for September dishes. If you’re scratching your head,

then you’re probably thinking about Beaujolais Nouveau, the easy drinking, fruity wine that floods ashore every November. Both styles hail from Beaujolais, a region in France sandwiched between Burgundy and the northern Rhone, home to some of the world’s most prestigious vineyards. And both are produced with Gamay, a thinskinned grape marked by bright red fruits that traces its lineage to Pinot Noir and an obscure white called Gouais Blanc. But unlike Beaujolais Nouveau, Cru Beaujolais is serious; the wines can offer wonderful depth and complexity and age for decades. And right now, they’re extremely well priced. As Maggie Hoffman, the drinks editor at Serious Eats, explained last year, “[Cru Beaujolais] offers some of the best value in red wine that you can find… it’s seriously well-made, balanced, food-friendly, delicious, and evocative of place, and it’s way underpriced.” Consumer confusion helps explain why Cru Beaujolais is undervalued. Ever since Georges Duboeuf introduced his Nouveau to the U.S. marketplace three decades ago, Americans have associated Beaujolais

in the cellar, and making real wines. Their bottlings are worth seeking out, especially if you have a trusted wine merchant to help guide you. Once upon a time, oenophiles everywhere knew that Beaujolais could produce some of the world’s most complex, aromatic, and lively wines. The region still produces gorgeous wines, but they’re mostly ignored. So before word gets out, be sure to stock your cellar. with the mass-produced, gimmicky plonk that sells by the truckload every November. Beaujolais Nouveau has certainly improved in recent years, but the whole concept still seems silly; it’s bizarre to celebrate Beaujolais’ new harvest with cheap wine that has been flown across the world. Consumer preference also explains why Cru Beaujolais is underappreciated. When consumers think of light wines, they tend to think of whites and rosés. For Americans, especially, a light red is an oxymoron -- reds are supposed to be dark, powerful, and served alongside steak. Cru Beaujolais hails from one of ten small villages in the northern part of this French wine region. Just as Napa Valley’s sub-appellations -- think Stags Leap, Oakville, Howell Mountain, and the like -- boast of special growing conditions, so do these ten villages. Good wine shops should stock wines from Fleurie, Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, and other Beaujolais crus. Most Nouveau is produced in southern Beaujolais. That said, many artisanal producers are working to change the reputation of the south by keeping yields low, rigorously sorting their grapes, avoiding manipulation

It’s a great time to dress up your home for fall entertaining; whether that means friends gathered around the television rooting for your favorite team or the ultimate traditional Thanksgiving feast. “Decorating trends for this fall are really fun and functional,” says visual merchandiser John Griffith. “Colors that evoke a sense of nostalgia and family are a really big part of the visual design message for autumn 2013. Reds, golds and oranges are trending this fall. These hues are not only warm and comforting; they’re

reflective of the season.” Griffith and teammate Julie Robbins add their own unique spin on the latest trends to create seasonal design vignettes for Replacements, Ltd., the world’s largest retailer of old and new china, crystal, silver and collectibles. Whether you are planning a casual family gathering or an elegant dinner party, Robbins suggests easy ways to mix in great fall colors. This can be as simple as adding a charger plate or colorful serving pieces. “Using colored glass is fantastic way of infusing autumn colors to create a seasonal feel,” says Robbins. “Amber colored glass is really popular this fall because the rich, warm color goes with so many patterns and designs. I’m big on the pressed vintage patterns; depression glass, coin glass and sandwich glass are all very lovely and nostalgic. We’re actually mixing and matching patterns from historic American glassmakers

including F e d e r a l , Indiana Glass and Fostoria on our tables. It looks great to mix designs which share the same colors or combine an array of colors within a place setting.” Metal serveware is another popular trend this fall. “We’re incorporating metal serveware into many of our displays because you can do so much with it from a design standpoint,” says Griffith. “These are great accent pieces you can dress up or down, plus it is family- and football-season friendly. Metal serveware is also very functional. Once heated, the alloy retains warmth to keep food warmer longer or cooler if you chill these pieces. Plus it is easy to clean and doesn’t have to be polished. We’re using a lot of fun shapes, like leafshaped pieces and turkey platters.” Fall’s bountiful harvest translates into the home this season. Robbins

is using natural elements in her table designs that evoke a sense of the first Thanksgiving. “I suggest filling vases, glasses or serving bowls with dried beans, acorns or even kernels of dried deer corn. Not only does this look pretty, you can also mix in candles or flowers and use these natural elements to hold those items in place.” Robbins adds apples, gourds, pumpkins and green pears are among fruits and vegetables you can use on your table or anywhere in your home to create a brilliant splash of color. She says you can find more decorating ideas at Replacements’ YouTube channel and Facebook page.
