The Daily Deals Site Experience by Christine Cadena Holiday shopping can lead to stress and anxiety for most of us - especially when we are struggling to find the perfect give while sticking to a strict budget. If you are like me - looking for ways to save money this year on holiday shopping - let me introduce you to Holiday Shopping 2.0. Developed as my own term, Holiday Shopping 2.0 refers to the online shopping adventure that is more than just a quick browse of online holiday deals with famous brand name retailers. In the 2.0 version of shopping this year, I’m taking shopping to a whole new level by picking up awesome, unique holiday on several different daily deal sites. What is a daily deal site? In most cases, these are small, family owned businesses, offering unique boutique items at extremely discounted prices. By offering the items for a limited time - usually 3 days - the mass hysteria that comes with group shopping results in massive quantities sold and low, low prices? For my holiday shopping this year, I’ve picked up cute sweater, blouses, monogrammed house décor, and even a few baby items - all at extremely low prices - saving as much as 75% off of retail. I have no affiliation with any of these stores, other than I
am a fan of the shopping experience and I really love the opportunity to stretch my holiday shopping dollars even farther. Want to try the Holiday Shopping 2.0 experience? It’s quite easy to find these sites. Just do a quick search engine browse for daily deal sites and you’ll find some of the biggest names in this new online shopping experience names like Snatchndash. com, SassySteals.com, a n d e v e n To A d o r n . com. Sign up for their newsletters and you’ll be kept apprised of their daily steals via email. Keep in mind, however, that there are limited quantities on these items so purchase your holiday gifts quickly. I learned the hard way - if you want to “think about it”, you may wait too long and that perfect holiday gift will be gone. Holiday shopping this year does not need to be as stressful as it has been in years past. Save money, save time, and find some of the coolest
holiday gifts online with the daily that addiction may carry over into a deal websites. If you are like me, year of savings, as you shop into the you’ll become addicted to such a cool 2014 Spring fashion season. shopping experience this holiday and

DIY decorating that lasts all season long
As the holidays roll around, it’s natural to want to spread good tidings and cheer with festive decorations like wreaths, candy canes and Santa Claus figurines. But this year, instead of digging out the same old holiday decorations, why not create some new looks that will last the entire winter season, even after you put away the gift wrap and ornaments? Stimulate the senses Nothing says winter like the fresh smell of pine and the soft, warm glow of candle light. Repurpose simple glass bottles into an outdoorsy candlescape with Krylon Natural Stone Textured Finish spray paint. Available in eight colors, like Olivine, it goes on easy
and gives you the natural beauty of stone and an elegant, professionallooking appearance. Once dry, wrap artificial garland with pinecones around the bottle’s neck or let the garland cascade down the bottle. Place pine tree-scented white taper candles in the bottle openings, light and enjoy for a fresh look and smell that will stimulate your senses well into 2014. Color works wonders Another easy way to excite the senses during a drab, gray winter is with pops of color. For a decorative display that lasts all season, avoid the red and green color combination associated with Christmas and

branch out with more contemporary choices like teals, blues, purples and pinks. Metallics like silver and gold are also a great way to glitz up the season without looking like the North Pole in overdrive. Try Krylon’s ColorMaster Metallic in Gold to spice up old ornaments, vases, frames, centerpieces and more in no time at all. Group spray-painted ornaments or pine cones in a hurricane vase or glass bowl and display on the mantel for added ambiance to any living room. Deck the halls Looking for a way to display the abundance of holiday cards from friends and family? Repurpose an old window shutter to create a unique display. Start by spray painting it with a festive shade, such as green or burgundy, which adds a touch of holiday spirit. Once dry, hang the shutter in the kitchen or entryway and place holiday cards in the slats of the shutter for a creative way to stay organized. Once the holidays have passed, you can still use the shutter to display birthday cards, thank you notes, party invitations and more all year long. Outdoor decor The inside of the home isn’t the only space you can be creative.
Make a lasting statement before houseguests even step inside your home by focusing decorative attention to the outside. Line walkways and driveways with lights or faux miniature pine trees, and place white flameless candlesticks on each windowsill to add a simple touch of holiday spirit without going overboard. Prop a vintage snow sled outside the front door to welcome guests. So, this year instead of the same decorations, consider some fun and easy ways to re-beautify them into pieces that you’ll be proud to display throughout the winter season. When you have children most talk about what toys they would like for Christmas all year long. If your children are like mine they start a Christmas list for Santa even before summer. Fall is when the attention to the lists really amps up. This coincides with the arrival of holiday toy commercials on television. By Halloween I have already heart so much about toys there is no doubt what the hot toys are for the season. Here are just a few of the top holiday toys for 2013. Just a little help figuring out what your children, no matter their age will be putting on their must have list. Preschool 1) Twilight Turtle Tunes - Both of my daughters have an original Cloud B Twilight Turtle and have been using it nightly for years. This year you can purchase the same popular light with the addition of lullaby’s to sooth your little one to sleep. Each night light projects a constellation of stars on the ceiling and walls. You can choose to have the stars in blue, green or amber. It also is equipped with a timer that will automatically shut off after 45 minutes to help save batteries. It comes pre-set with lullabies or parents can even create a personalized one. This toy is already hard to find online so if you are interested start shopping early. Price ranges from $50- $55 depending on where you shop. 2) Big Hugs Elmo - Elmo is popular with babies, toddlers and preschoolers. This “Sesame Street” favorite has true staying power with kids over the years. Sure to be one of the most coveted toys this Christmas is this big stuffed Elmo. When hugged
he hugs back, it also plays songs, dances and imitates play with your child. Another adorable feature is when he is laid down flat he sings and yawns like he is tired. Elmo is priced at $49.00. 3) Doc McStuffins Get Better Checkup Center - This holiday toy is priced higher at around $89.00. If your children are fans of the popular Disney character and her television show this is a good choice. This doctor center comes with a play lab coat; the x-rays have lights and talk, a medical kit and stickers. Everything a child could want to make everyone well. School Age 1) Razor Spark 2.0 Scooter - Razor scooters have been popular with kids for a few years. This year they have the addition of motion activated LED lights underneath. They also have a replaceable spark bar that creates a trail of sparks as they ride. These scooters are priced regularly $around $70.00. At the time of this article some stores have this scooter on sale for about ten dollars less. With any bike or scooter remember to invest in a helmet and safety gear it is essential. 2) My Little Pony Equestria Dolls - For the 2013 holiday toys the popular “My Little Pony” line has produced dolls based on the horse characters. Starting at $12.99 a doll they are similar to Bratz or Barbie dolls. Each has similar colors and styling of the
horse counterpart of the same name. The dolls come with accessories like sunglasses, wings or a hair brush. 3) Nerf Rebelle Heatbreaker Bow and Arrow - With the phenomenal success of “The Hunger Games” kids of all ages are suddenly anxious to shoot a bow and arrow like Katniss. Instead of investing a lot of money in an expensive, and more dangerous bow and arrow this toy is a perfect compromise. For under $20.00 you can give them a chance to learn how to shoot safely. This surprisingly powerful bow can shoot the safe darts up to 75 feet. For extra fun you can also purchase an extra dart set with an ammo belt.

Hot Toys for Kids for the 2013 Holiday Season For toys to be awesome hits for kids and parents alike, they must be fun to play with right out of the box, but also having staying power to last as well. It’s also important for toys to educate, entertain, and hold a child’s attention for a good length of time. Most of this year’s toys will also appeal to adults, so join in on the fun and enrich your child’s playtime. Here are a few to consider. VTech has launched the InnoTab 3S, which is a Wi-Fi enabled children’s learning tablet. Just like the parents’ electronics, this communication device allows kids ages three to nine to be connected with their parents and friends through both tablet to mobile and tablet to tablet communication with the Kid Connect app. Just think, your child can make you a special drawing or note and you can download it on your smart phone at work and you can reply back to them. This package, at around $100, comes as a kid-safe web browser along with a rechargeable battery pack and AC adapter. VTech’s Learning Lodge app store has a plethora of age appropriate content and curriculum to download plus 20 free apps with this package. It’s never too early to start children on computers as technology is the key to future learning. Understanding the importance of imaginary play, Playmobil has launched its new toy PopStars Stage. Pretend to be rock stars and belt out your favorite tunes in concert to a crowded audience. This toy is MP3 compatible so you can create your concert where your songs are accompanied with drums, guitar solos and flashing lights. Four figures are included (as your band) along with accessories such as drum sets, guitars, microphones, speakers and two preloaded tunes to get you started. This toy is a must for musically inclined kids ages four to ten who yearn to be singing sensations. It’s retailing this holiday season at $39.99. Later you can add to this theme with the PopStars Tour Bus and PopStars Keyboarder. And for the younger set, why not let your youngster play with miles of learning with VTech’s Go! Go! Smart Wheels Airport Play Set? The air-
port helps young children strengthen their fine motor skills and builds their imagination through play. The little airplane teaches letters and sounds and there’s a control tower that turns its antenna to fly the plane. Children may also be interested in this company’s other sets including the Go! Go! Smart Wheels Train Station and Go! Go! Smart Wheels Construction Play Set. These stations range from $25 to $35 in retail stores. You can pack a few Go! Go! Smart Wheels vehicles in a child’s holiday stocking for $7.99 with an assortment of 12 different vehicles to choose from. With a push of a button, they light up, talk and play music. Is your child a foodie? VTech has the 2-in-1 Shop and Cook Play Set, which transforms from a shopping cart to a kitchen in a matter of minutes. The cart responds with cute sounds and phrases and then when the child is ready to cook, there is a pretend cutting board, stovetop, oven, and sink. For children ages two through five, this play set encourages learning about food, colors, numbers, following directions and much more. This toy retails at just under $50. What a fun year for the toy industry and for the entertainment of your children. Take time to enjoy your children’s company and play with them. You’ll be directing their development and absorb the thrill and amusement in their playtime activities.

Ho s te d b y t h e Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, we invite you to celebrate this year as we feature the theme “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree!” Beautiful multi-million dollar yachts, kayaks, canoes and other small boats will light up the harbor as a dazzling array of holiday lights and music fill the air at the Christmas Boat Parade. Many of the boats will be richly decorated with animated Christmas scenes accompanied by music and costumed carolers. Some boat owners in the past have spent over $50,000 to decorate their vessels for the event. The Christmas floats will wind their way some 14 miles around the harbor to give viewers in restaurants, yacht clubs, on public beaches, and in private homes an incredible sight that has delighted millions of people for a century. The Christmas Boat Parade, which has been hailed as “one of
the top ten holiday happenings in the nation” by the New York Times, is truly a magical holiday tradition for all ages. The parade continues to be a premier event during the holiday season in Southern California that brings joy and happiness to all that view it. Parade As Newport Beach’s Christmas Card to the world, the boat parade will set the harbor ablaze for five consecutive nights, beginning Wednesday, December 18 and ending Sunday, December 22, 2013. The parade starts off Bay
Island at 6:30 pm and finishes at the same site at approximately 9:00 pm each evening. Fireworks There will be two nights of Fireworks this year! Opening night December 18th starting at 6:20pm and closing night December 22nd starting at 9pm. Ring of Lights Beautifully decorated bayside homes and businesses surrounding the harbor go “all out” with their own holiday spirit, featuring everything from roof-top animated scenes to dancing Christmas trees. With its
own judged categories and prizes awarded, the “Ring of Lights” has become as celebrated as the boat parade itself. Awards Dinner and Auction Both the Boat Parade and the Ring of Lights competitions culminate at the annual Awards Dinner & Auction to be held on January 24, 2014 at the Island Hotel Newport Beach. 10 Fun Facts About Holiday Shopping HOLIDAY SHOPPING: typically, this activity boosts the American economy between the months of October and December. Most consumers don’t know the length in which store owners go to get their business. They just focus on finding that special gift for a relative or friend. 10 fun facts about holiday shopping: The average holiday shopper spends over one hundred dollars on items for him or her self while out shopping. On Black Friday, most ‘door buster deals’ are in very limited supplies. Each store has less than ten of the products available for sale. Door buster deals are merely a way to lure customers into a store. What makes a customer leave a store even if interested in making a purchase? According to studies by retailers, the answer is the ‘butt brush”, a term describing the invasion of a customer’s personal space. On average, a holiday shopper makes five trips to the mall before obtaining all of his or her gifts for the holiday season. Do you get a ‘rush’ from shopping? Research indicates this activity can flood the pleasure zone of the brain with the chemical dopamine. As a result, you feel ‘high’ like a drug addict does after ingesting an illegal substance. E-mails are another way stores increase their sales. The more a person browses through these types of e-mails, the more likely he or she will buy. The online equivalent to Black Friday is Cyber Monday. On this day, online retailers have special sales. In 2012, 1.465 billion was spent by consumers during Cyber Monday. Around six percent of U.S. shoppers have an addiction to shopping or compulsive buying. Neither of the sexes - male or female - are more likely to develop this problem.
In order to push more products, store owners put up a 50% off signs. Why? It draws in customers who may or may not know the original price of an item or if they are really getting a good discount. Many people are last minute holiday shoppers. Between Dec. 15 and Dec. 24, 40% of the entire
holiday season sales are made. Surprised? These 10 fun facts about holiday shopping reveal the intricacies of this activity. Retailers know how to get people in the door, what happens after that is up to the consumer.

MIRACLES FOR KIDS RAISES OVER $850,000 AT ANNUAL GALA
The Newport News
Sugar Ray Leonard and Harper Heil Miracles for Kids, a nonprofit serving children with life-threatening illnesses and their low-income families throughout Southern California, announced that its 9th annual Night of Miracles Gala held at the St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point, raised over $850,000 making Miracles Are Forever its most successful gala to-date. Proceeds from the event fund the organizations programs that provide aid to hundreds of low-income families who are crumbling under the financial hardship of caring for children with life-threatening illnesses. Miracles for Kids currently operates at CHOC Childrens and Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, and is expanding its programs to support other regional childrens hospitals within the next year. More than 660 of Southern Californias most notable philanthropists and celebrities attended the popular annual event, emceed by Neil Everett co-host the of the 11:00pm edition of SportsCenter. Themed Miracles Are Forever, the 9th annual gala immersed guests in the spectacle of the world’s favorite secret agent, James Bond. Incredible performances by iL CIRCo the critically acclaimed troupe of gravity defying acrobats entertained guests for the second year in a row, in addition to exciting live and silent auctions. Guests also enjoyed an exclusive taste of specially prepared NOLETs Silver Dry Gin cocktails, donated by Miracles for Kids event sponsor and longtime supporter Carl Nolet and NOLET Spirits U.S.A. The success of this years gala is due to the incredible time and energy Javier Sosa, Carl Nolet and David Heil put forth by our board members, staff and volunteers, said Miracles for Kids Board Chairman, Kenneth Gerdau. It is an honor to serve as the Chairman of the Board of such an incredible organization, and to work with such kind and giving people dedicated to helping others. The most impactful moment of the evening arrived just after the most somber. Directly following an incredibly moving patient profile video on Michael Mikey Reyes diagnosed with brain stem glioma at age 6, an aggressive and cancerous tumor inside of the brain stem the galas guests proved why Night of Miracles is such a unique charity event. The Fund-a-Family fundraiser directly followed the video, led by auctioneer Jim Nye and assisted by Miracles for Kids patients, with approximately $292,000 raised from over 200 bidders in the room. One-hundred percent of the funds were donated to the organizations Grant Program, which provides basic living expenses for families with children currently undergoing treatment. Always an enthusiastic auctioneer, Nye led a captivating live auction that showcased luxury getaways, unforgettable experiences, and exclusive packages. This years items included a one-week escape to Tony Robbins Namale Resort and Spa in Fiji that went for $17,000; a one-week vacation to Casa Todo Bien in Punta Mita that raised $22,0000; a Bond-themed package that went for $7,500 which included a flight in a WWII P-51 Mustang and a weekend ownership of a brand-new 2013 Aston Martin; and an adorable, purebred, 10-week-old Silky Terrier puppy complete with a lifetime of obedience classes that went for $8,000. Once again, Miracles for Kids offered electronic bidding technology through Autumn Strier and Kenneth Apolo Ohno and Claire Nguyen BidPal for the silent auction portion of the evening, making the event almost Gerdau entirely electronic. Guests bid on items ranging from luxury hotel packages to unique cases of wine. Prior to the live auction, over 200 guests participated in the Heads or Tails game to win this years opportunity item, a pair of Black and White Diamond Briolette Fringe Earrings, donated by famed jewelry designer, Martin Katz, and valued at $36,000. The evening, designed to celebrate the organizations mission and its supporters, also included revealing the 2013 Miracle Maker recipient David Heil of David August- Lifestyle Outfitters, in recognition of his longstanding personal and professional support of Miracles for Kids and the families it serves. A member of Miracles for Kids Board of Directors, David Heil was congratulated with a video including personally shot clips by friends Tony Robbins, Michael Strahan, Erik Logan, Chris Radomski, and others, as well as by fellow supporters and friends in attendance including Sugar Ray Leonard, Heather and Terry Dubrow, and Jason Vargas. Miracles for Kids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving children with life-threatening illnesses and the families that care for them. With 88 cents on every dollar raised channeled directly into its programs and 100% of Fund-a-Family program donations given directly to each family Miracles for Kids creates stability when families are crumbling from the financial and emotional devastation of fighting for their child’s life. Founded in 2002, Miracles for Kids is based in Amy Stewart, Paula Ansara-Wilhelm, Autumn Strier and Stephanie Orange County and operates programs serving families throughout Southern Morfitt California. Just like the technological advances in electronics where the IPhone changed the way we think about and use phones, there has been a significant technological leap forward in custom orthotics. It is estimated that 95% of the population suffers from mechanical foot imbalances. These are primarily seen as over pronation of the feet. Pronation is where the feet/arches collapse or the ankles tend to fall inward. Abnormal pronation is certainly seen with all flat feet, but people with high arches can also have pronation problems. While the average person might not be able to identify abnormal pronation, one can look at the results of pronation and determine if these new orthotics could be of benefit to them. If you have any of these problems, you are a candidate for the new Perfect Posture orthotics.
This list encompasses about 95% of the U. S. population!

You may ask, “What is so new about these Perfect Posture arch supports?” These orthotics utilize a new casting method that puts the foot into its best position. When the cast is made, the mold is actually the shape of the new orthotic. The new casting process results in a full contact orthotic which supports your foot so that there is contact with all parts of the foot in its optimal position. Another improvement from the old technology is the orthotic device is made of material that is calibrated to YOUR weight. Utilizing this new material and process results in an orthotic which will act as a spring for your arch, as it will flex just the right amount when walking, standing or exercising based on your weight. Should you gain or lose 15% of your weight the orthotic should be recalibrated. For patients who will say I already have orthotics, this situation is analogous to having an old cellular phone. Yes you have a phone but you get so much more function and convenience with smart phones. So discard those old orthotics and come in! You’ll benefit from the latest advances - while you get the most out of your feet - and your life!
