Handy Holiday Reminders Santa makes a list and checks it twice so he doesn’t forget anything. Do you? There are a few things that a lot of people forget during the holidays, according to a survey by RadioShack. So you might want to double check your own to-do list, just to be sure that everyone’s holiday can be jolly. Thank you notes – 44 percent of those surveyed forget to write a note of thanks for a gift. Stock up on thank you cards early – then put a “Thank You Day” on the family calendar between Christmas and New Year’s so that everyone can take care of this important task before too much time goes by. Batteries – 36 percent forget batteries for the gifts they buy. There’s nothing more frustrating than getting excited about a new present, then not being able to use it right away because there are no batteries. When you buy an electronic gift, make sure you put the right size batteries in the cart before you check out. Stock up on some of the more common sizes in case someone else forgets the batteries for your gift, too. Accessories for gifts – 31 percent tend to forget gift accessories, such as carrying cases, battery chargers, headphones or cleaning kits. If you’re not sure what kind of accessories your gift should have, you can always include
a gift card so that the recipient can buy just what they need later on. For more accessory and gift ideas, visit www. radioshack.com. Hostess gifts – The holidays are filled with parties and special occasions, yet 29 percent don’t remember to bring a host or hostess gift with them. Keep a little stash of ready-to-go gifts such as gourmet cocoas or coffees, boxed chocolates or scented candles so you have something handy for even the most last-minute events. Receipts and return options – Sometimes, despite your best efforts, a gift just doesn’t work out, so you need to make it easy for the recipient to return it. If you’re one of the 70 percent who said they plan to do the majority of their holiday shopping in stores this year, be sure to ask for a gift receipt along with your regular receipt. If you’re one of the 26 percent who plans to do 50 percent or more of shopping online, find out what the site’s return policies are. Print up any documentation for the gift and make it available to the recipient should they need it. Taking care of these little things now will help make the holidays go more smoothly, and let you enjoy them even more.

A New Twist on a Traditional Holiday Recipe
Everyone loves traditional holiday fare – mom’s stuffing, grandma’s sugar cookies, or that best-kept secret recipe that keeps friends and family coming back for more. But where does tradition end and boring begin? This holiday season, if you’re looking for unique twists on traditional family recipes, or are looking for something entirely new to introduce into your holiday menu, you’re not alone. In fact, many families are looking to wholesome ingredients as a way to add flavor and healthfulness to their holiday meals and baked goods. One
way to steal the culinary spotlight is with California Raisins, which bring natural sweetness to a multitude of seasonal dishes, from indulgent confections to savory main courses. “The versatility of raisins is endless,” said Larry Blagg, senior vice president of marketing for the California Raisin Marketing Board. “Because they are an all-natural, dried-by-the-sun fruit with no added sugar, California Raisins add nutritious sweetness to any holiday meal or favorite dessert.” In addition to their wide range of uses in holiday cooking, California raisins are also the most economical dried fruit, making them one purchase this season that won’t break the bank. For a fresh take on holiday staples that are sure to become new traditions in your household, try this delicious recipe, or look for other holiday recipe ideas at www. LoveYourRaisins.com. Blue Ribbon Raisin Apple Hand Held Pies Servings: 16 individual pies Raisin apple filling: 1 1/2 cups chopped tart apples 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons water 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 3/4 cup California raisins
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon granulated white sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg Pinch ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter Blue ribbon pastry: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon white granulated sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/3 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into chunks 1/3 cup vegetable shortening 4-5 tablespoons cold water Egg wash: 1 egg Pinch of salt For filling, combine apples, brown sugar, water, lemon juice and raisins in 2-quart saucepan. Cover and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes until apples are just tender. Meanwhile, in small bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt and spices together well, and add liquid from cooking apples to make slurry. Then, add all to pan with apples and continue to cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 2 minutes.
Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and butter. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile for pastry, measure flour, sugar, salt and cinnamon into large bowl and with pastry blender, fork or two knives, cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing after each addition until flour is moist and dough just holds together. Turn onto lightly floured surface; knead together and shape into flattened disk. Divide into 4 equal pieces; wrap separately in plastic wrap or wax paper and chill for at least 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F. On lightly floured surface, roll out pastry dough, one piece at a time, and cut each piece into 4 small rounds with 3 1/2or 4-inch cookie cutter. Place 1 scant tablespoon filling just below center on each piece; moisten edges and fold over, sealing edges with fork. Arrange on baking sheet and prick tops of each handheld pie in several places with fork or cut one small slit with sharp knife. Beat 1 egg with pinch of salt for egg wash and brush onto pies. Bake at 375°F for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned. Cool and serve. Note: McIntosh apples recommended.
8-Time Olympic Medalist Jason Lezak to Light Fashion Island’s Huge Friendship Menorah Hanukah - The Festival of Lights - for many of us brings back fond memories of childhood years, and serves to renew our sense of identity. The Chanukah lights provide us with warmth, joy, strength and inspiration. Such is a purpose of a community-wide Menorah lighting and celebration. Fashion Island joins Chabad Jewish Center in inviting the entire community to celebrate the Festival of Lights at a public Menorah Lighting ceremony on Tuesday, December 16 at 6:00PM in Fashion Island’s Atrium Garden Court. The celebration begins with a holiday musical performance by a group of young special needs children from the Friendship Circle. The lighting of the huge Friendship Menorah, painted by children with special needs will be kindled by 8-Time Olympic Medalist, Jason Lezak. Participants will enjoy gifts and treats, Hanukah crafts, face painting and balloon animals. Participants are encouraged to bring along a Page 4
gift for the community toy drive and distribution to underprivileged children, making these deserving children’s holiday that much brighter. Hanukah, a celebration for all time, is highlighted by the kindling of the Menorah each night of the Holiday. “It is a holiday that enriches our lives and strengthens our tradition”, said Rabbi Reuven Mintz of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life. “In ancient times, our ancestors rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, we rededicate ourselves to making this world a better and brighter place. Hanukah also transmits the universal message that ultimately good will prevail over evil, freedom over oppression and light over darkness.” Event Calendar Summary Menorah Lighting at Fashion Island Date: Tuesday, December 16th at 6:00 PM Location: Fashion Island’s Atrium Garden Court – Near Barnes and Noble Info www.JewishNewport.com ~ (949) 721-9800

Tips to help you shop smarter this holiday season The holiday season is all about celebrating with family and friends, which means more merry-making, staying organized and enjoying the time spent shopping for the perfect gifts. A smart shopper is able to access and keep organized great deals and discounts, reduce time with online shopping and check for last-minute opinions if absolutely necessary. To help be a smarter shopper this holiday season, consider putting these tips to use: * Keep the deals and discounts organized - At this time of year, everyone’s inbox is flooded with promotions with varying expiration dates. Holiday-themed emails began filling inboxes across the country starting mid-October, and will continue to increase over the next two months, according to an Experian study. Being able to train your inbox to manage these promotions for you will help save time while online shopping. Outlook.com has a sweep feature that allows users to move everything from a particular sender to a single folder with a quick push of a button, and then delete everything except the most recent communications. In a matter of seconds, the hundreds of holiday deals clogging your inbox are sorted and deleted except for the deals you need in order to receive a discount on your online purchase. More than half of holiday shoppers will shop online this season, according to the National Retail Federation, but you’ll be ahead of the game with your promotions organized for quick access. * Make certain your online shopping
is secure - Identity theft is a big concern during the holiday season, and keeping your credit card and account information secure should be a priority, especially when shopping online. Start first with the Internet browser you’re using. Internet Explorer 11 is the most secure browser among its competitors, according to NSS Labs. By keeping your browser and other software updated you’ll have the most upto-date security protection on your computer. Also, when shopping, make certain you’re on a secure site. The SmartScreen Filter on Internet Explorer 11 helps warn you about unsafe sites before you share your account information with people who could misuse it. * Share your wish lists - Many families create wish lists to help in finding the perfect gift for each recipient - you wouldn’t want anyone receiving another fruit cake! But sometimes a typed list doesn’t convey the full idea of exactly what you’re
looking for. Use visuals to remove any confusion about what you really want by uploading and sharing a photo wish list on SkyDrive. That way, you know the wish list will always be with you through the cloud. * Get a last-minute opinion Sometimes the shopping list fails or you’re in need of an urgent gift, and find yourself in a crowded store faced with a gift dilemma. Grab a second opinion with a friend or family member using Skype on your phone. You can use both video calls and messages to communicate your quandary, and quickly arrive at a mutual agreement, allowing you to finish your shopping and enjoy the rest of the holiday season. Smart shopping helps remove stress from the holiday season, and you can accomplish your shopping to-do list much more efficiently. You’ll soon discover you have free time to hang out with friends and family more often and really enjoy the holiday season.

Think outside the chocolate box when hosting a holiday cookie exchange The holidays provide a good excuse to bake and eat cookies. Not the traditional chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies that most of us eat during the rest of the year, but those special recipes that have everyone going back for a second taste. Hosting a cookie exchange is a great way to expose your friends to a wider variety of cookie recipes this holiday season. But before sending out invitations and asking your friends to make their favorite cookie recipe, consider thinking outside the chocolate box for your party this year. There are tons of ways to make your cookie exchange party unique. Start planning your party right away using a couple of these ideas. * Make it a themed cookie exchange. Theme parties are fun at any time of year, but take it one step further with your cookie exchange. Invite your guests to follow the theme with the recipes they choose to make. For example, consider hosting a black and white cookie party, explaining to attendees that the cookies must have a black or white element. Coconut, white or dark chocolate candies, nuts and sugar for icing are just several ingredients that fit the bill, and you can find dozens of recipes featuring these items. Or make it a chocolate party, where all of the recipes have a
chocolate ingredient in them. Many cookie recipes include nuts, so a nut theme would also be a great idea. In addition to the recipes featuring the theme, also decorate the party room to match. In need of a recipe? The following white chocolate crunch recipe is great for all three themed parties: Hawaiian Host Whole Macadamia White Chocolate Crunch Ingredients: 1 box, 7 ounces, 18 pieces Hawaiian Host Whole Macadamia White Chocolates 1 cup Rice Krispies 1 cup mini marshmallows 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter Directions: Melt chocolate in a microwave oven in 4 quart casserole at 70 percent power for 3 - 4 minutes, stirring periodically, until melted. Stir in peanut butter. Add corn cereal and marshmallows; stir. Pour into buttered 8-by-8 inch square pan or dish. When firm, cut into squares. * Up the game on the party favors. The purpose of a cookie exchange is to leave the party with a variety of holiday cookies, but you and your guests can have a lot more fun. Ways to think outside the chocolate box include holding a wine pairing with the cookies. Red wine and chocolate go well together, and your guests can
determine which pairing works best for their holiday tables. Or indulge by serving some chocolate martinis alongside the cookies. If your group is into games, make up fun names for the cookie recipes everyone brought, or make a unique recipe just for the party, and have guests guess the ingredients in the mystery cookie. * Introduce unexpected ingredients into the cookie recipes. One of the holiday season’s most popular confections is Hawaiian Host chocolate-covered macadamia nuts that tempt frequent snacking all season long. But chopping up these chocolate-covered nuts and putting them into a cookie recipe will introduce a new surprise to all your guests. Try them in the following butter cookie recipe: Hawaiian Host Milk Chocolate AlohaMac Butter Cookies Ingredients: 14 pieces Hawaiian Host Milk Chocolate AlohaMacs, chop into pieces 1/2 cup butter, unsalted 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup light brown sugar, granulated 1 large egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/4 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Mix butter and sugars in large bowl until light and fluffy. Add egg and beat, then add vanilla extract. Mix flour, salt and soda, and add gradually to butter mixture. Fold in chocolate pieces. Drop rounded spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake 8 - 10 minutes in the preheated oven, until light brown. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes. Then place on a wire rack to cool completely. Hosting a cookie exchange is a lot of fun, and when you think outside the chocolate box, you can take the fun to a whole new level. So start planning your party, find some unique cookie recipes and get started with your holiday baking. Easy and beautiful holiday looks for the everyday woman Feeling your best during the holiday season helps make celebrating that much more meaningful. When you look beautiful, your confidence and charisma can shine, whether at a work party or a family gathering. You don’t have to dress like a fashion model to have a festive look, simply remember these fashion tricks and trends for a gorgeous, comfortable appearance no matter what you’re celebrating: Accessorize - Just as the holiday lights sparkle, so too should your accessories. This is the perfect time of year to use your costume jewelry to jazz up any outfit. Pair a statement necklace with a simple blouse for a cheerful look. Heading outdoors? Broaches are back - so pin that sparkler to your jacket collar or to your knit hat for a little extra pizzazz. Denim - You can’t go wrong with a great pair of jeans. Be sure to choose a pair that complements your best features, like dENiZEN (R) from the Levi’s (R) brand, which is sold exclusively at Target, includes a line for curvy gals. Being fashionable doesn’t mean being uncomfortable: with their innovative Essential Stretch fabrication, their denim is 40 percent more stretchable, plus it will maintain
its shape and soft feel for all-day comfort. Whether you’re heading to an ice rink or a restaurant, pair dENiZEN jeans with a cable-knit sweater for a wonderful winter outfit. Blazers - Blazers are back and ideal for winter weather. A classic tweed blazer makes for memorable holiday attire when paired with stylish jeans, or jazz up a houndstooth blazer with black slacks and a cashmere scarf. Not only will you have cool style fitting for women of every generation, but you’ll also have an extra layer to block the chill of Old Man Winter. Sweaters - Perhaps no other piece of clothing embraces the feeling of the holidays better than a great sweater. Chunky knits and cowl necks are big, proving a warm sweater has its place in everyone’s closet. Take queues from the traditional holiday hues and wear a sweater in ruby red, emerald green or rich metallics. Pair with leggings and boots and you’re ready to hit the town. Black jeans - Switch out your LBD (little black dress) for the LBJ (little black jean)! You can rock them by day with a blazer to the office, or with a feminine frock for an office happy hour by night. One look that is great to experiment with over the holidays
is a twist to the woman’s tuxedo. Take a pair of black skinny jeans, like the ones from dENiZEN(R) from the Levi’s(R) brand. Wear with a tuxedo jacket, a black blouse, bowtie and satin stilettos for a look that will turn heads all night. Textures - An easy way to breathe new life into your closet is by thinking outside the box and matching pieces you normally wouldn’t pair together. Blending textures is a great way to create new outfits - pair a silky shirt with a twill scarf, an angora sweater with a leather skirt, or those funky boots with a conservative cardigan. You’ll be surprised at the new looks that can be inspired. Makeup - The holidays are the perfect reason for playing up your makeup routine. Whether you rarely wear makeup or you have an extensive daily routine, hit up your favorite retail store and treat yourself to a few new
products. Nothing says “mistletoeready” better than red lips, but the shade is glamorous on nails, too. For eyes, metals are trending. If the idea of gold or silver on your lids intimidates you, just dab a bit on the inside corner of your eyes for a little touch of shimmer. The perfect holiday outfit isn’t something to fret over. Celebrate all the good tidings of the season and feel great in an outfit that looks great while letting your personal style shine through.

Lighting up your home with style... Its that time of year again…the time to take the Christmas lights out of the attic. You know the drill, plug them all in to see which ones are working and which ones are only half lit. We love to decorate for the holidays. One thing we want to point out is that lights aren’t EVERYTHING! Here are some tips to help you think outside the bulb: • •
•
•
Come up with a theme – it can be anything from reindeer to snowmen. But if you have a theme, try to keep it consistent; Don’t put your The over the top, show off? reindeer with your snowmen. Garland – We love it! You can never have enough of it. But please make sure if you do use it, use it with purpose. Don’t just hang one little strand and call it good. Think outside box and use it in different ways. Wrap your posts with it or create a wreath out of it. You can even add some starfish and beads and make your own custom coastal garland. Outside decorating doesn’t mean you can’t use pieces that you would normally use indoors – if you have a covered porch feel free to bring out your favorite nutcracker or big Christmas ornaments. The Playful – overuse of the fiber Just remember to keep in mind; scale. Small decorations that optics? can’t be seen from the road are no good. Don’t forget the windows! This is where the details count. Think it through and make sure you go outside to see what it looks like from there.
Lastly, for those of you who insist on using lights for your Holiday décor, Keep it tasteful. No matter the colors or size, have a plan. No one wants to see light vomit on your front yard. Take your time, think The tasteful and simple – white it through. Use the proper equipment – lights that are falling down or lights? sloppy can bring down a neighborhood fast. So…which lighting culprit are you? SKD Studios wishes all of you a very Happy Holidays! Don’t forget to make your appointment for the new year! Angelitos de Oro Raises $300,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters With the sole purpose of raising funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County’s “High School Bigs” mentoring program, Angelitos de Oro, a Newport Beach-based volunteer women’s auxiliary group, raised $300,000 for the nonprofit during its 13th annual Angelitos Card fashion fundraiser at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. Angelitos de Oro has donated more than $5M to the nonprofit since the auxiliary’s inception in 1961. “Angelitos de Oro is a deeply valued supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, and we are so grateful for their continued commitment to our vision that every child should have the opportunity to succeed in life and live up to their full potential,” said Melissa Beck, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. “The 2014 Angelitos Card program was another amazing success and we thank the Angelitos for putting on this fantastic annual fashion fundraiser to benefit at-risk youth.” A partnership between Angelitos de Oro and South Coast Plaza, the Angelitos Card program consisted of more than 100 boutiques and restaurants at South Coast Plaza who offered a 20% saving to Angelitos cardholders for one week. Stores that participated in the Angelitos Card fundraiser included Bottega Veneta, Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, St. John, Giorgio Armani, Saint Laurent, Anne Fontaine, M.Missoni, J.Crew, DKNY and TOD’s. The card was sold for $60, and all proceeds benefited the nonprofit. A Preview Day event was held October 7 in South Coast Plaza’s Jewel Court, where fall fashion trends were presented by participating luxury boutiques, including Bottega Veneta, Donna Karan and M.Missoni, champagne and a light lunch were served, and Card holders learned more about how Angelitos de Oro’s generous contributions support the important mentorship programs Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County provides in the community to at-risk youth. All boutiques participating in Preview Day generously donated 10% of their sales proceeds that day to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. Angelitos de Oro raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County’s “High School Bigs” program, which matches a volunteer high school “Big” with an elementary school “Little” and once a week after school the “Bigs” provide age-appropriate peer-to-peer mentoring. The program is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year and served 590 elementary and middle school students in 2013. The nonprofit has found a significant decrease in truancy as well as increased academic performance as a result of the program. A Tustin-based nonprofit organization that helps youth to realize their potential and build their futures, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County provides over 2,400 children facing adversity with professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships to change their lives for the better. Youth (“Littles”) are matched with volunteer mentors (“Bigs”) to develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on their lives, with results including: in 2013-2014, 98% of “Littles” graduated high school on time, with 70% of “Littles” being the first in their family to receive a high school diploma. More so, 83% of “Littles” enrolled in college and 100% said their “Big” was their biggest influence to pursue a higher education for a better future. For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters live in single-parent and low-income families, or households where a parent is incarcerated. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”). Providing a system of ongoing evaluation and support, Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven by independent studies to help families by improving the odds that “Littles” will perform better in school and avoid violence and illegal activities, and have stronger relationships with their parents and others. Headquartered in Dallas with a network of nearly 400 agencies across the country, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves a quarter million children annually. In 2013, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County served over 2,400 children. To learn more about Angelitos de Oro, visit angelitosdeoro.org. For more information, visit www.bigbrooc.org. Page 10

MORE THAN A PIPE DREAM! PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S ANNUAL “HOLIDAY ORGAN SPECTACULAR” FEATURES CHRISTMAS FAVORITES
Feel the joy and majesty of the holidays through the mighty sounds and vibrations of the William J. Gillespie Concert Organ during Pacific Symphony’s annual “Holiday Organ Spectacular.” The color, beauty and versatility of the organ is showcased in partnership with voice and other solo instruments to bring out the best of treasured Christmas classics. Todd Wilson, curator of the E.M. Skinner pipe organ at Severance Hall and one of the highest-regarded concert organists across the world today, returns with a thrilling mix of classical and popular Christmas carols, including Bach’s “In dulci jubilo” and “Two Chorale Preludes.” Praised for her “exquisite voice, clarity and range” (Harold Prince), soprano Lisa Vroman, who starred for several years on Broadway as Christine Daae in “The Phantom of the Opera,” is featured throughout the program in “Ave Maria,” “O Holy Night,” “Candlelight Carol,” “The Christmas Song” and “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” Adding yet more color and zest to the organ’s palette are the Symphony’s principal musicians Rose Corrigan, bassoon; Barry Perkins, trumpet (playing piccolo/ petite trumpet); and Mindy Ball, harp. Taking place Tuesday, Dec. 16, at
7:30 p.m., this concert launches the 2014-15 Pedals and Pipes series, which spotlights the $3.1 million concert organ created by C.B. Fisk— the visual focal point of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. For more information or to purchase tickets ($15-$75), call (714) 7555799 or visit www.PacificSymphony. org. “[Todd Wilson is]... a fabulous virtuoso with fleet feet, a prodigious memory and technique to burn.” — The Plain Dealer. “We have a wonderful variety of music on this year’s program, ranging from Bach to seasonal favorites like ‘O Holy Night’ and ‘Sleigh Ride,’” says Wilson. “We also have some new arrangements being created especially for this concert. I look forward especially to the arrangement of ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,’ featuring the bassoon as Grinch. It promises to be great fun!” An acoustic delight, this performance features beloved Christmas songs that warm the heart and create the feeling of good cheer. “The First Noel,” “Little Drummer Boy” and “I Saw Three Ships,” are included, as well as two chances for the audience to sing along to the songs, “The Holly and the Ivy,” “Deck the Halls,” “Silent Night” and “Joy to
the World.” Wilson also performs Garth Edmundson’s Toccata on “Vom Himmel Hoch” and Pastorale and Dance by Craig Phillips. “I enjoy this concert year after year because of the special opportunity to collaborate with some of the outstanding musicians of Pacific Symphony, and to play a magnificent organ in a beautiful concert hall,” says Wilson. Setting “the gold standard by which others are measured” (The American Organist), Wilson is acclaimed internationally for his virtuosity. Wilson is head of the organ department at The Cleveland Institute of Music and director of music and worship at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Cleveland. He also serves as house organist for the newly restored Aeolian organ at the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in Akron, Ohio. He has performed in major cities throughout the United States, Europe and Japan, including concerts at Symphony Hall in Birmingham, U.K., Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Severance Hall in Cleveland, Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas and Uihlein Hall in Milwaukee. His latest CDs on the JAV label feature a live recital of American music from the National Cathedral
in Washington, D.C. and “Live from Severance Hall,” a concert of music for trumpet and organ. Establishing herself as one of America’s most versatile voices, Vroman garnered Theatre Critic’s awards for her role in “The Phantom of the Opera” during a recordbreaking run in San Francisco, and she also had a return engagement at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. In 2008, Vroman made her Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Pops, starred as Lili Vanessi in “Kiss Me Kate” with Glimmerglass Opera, sang the role of Birdie in “Regina” with Utah Opera, made her New Jersey Opera debut as Rosalinda in “Die Fledermaus,” and premiered two comic operas by composers John Musto and William Bolcom with the New York Festival of Song. She is a frequent guest soloist with major theatre and opera companies as well as orchestras. Pedals and Pipes continues on March 8, 2015, with an organ recital by Hector Olivera. On April 26, 2015, Dennis James returns for another silent film revival, as he performs the soundtrack to Charlie Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush.” This series is generously sponsored by the official vehicle, Mercedes Benz, Avenue of the Arts Wyndham Hotel and PBS SoCal.

The year is 1914 --- One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the Year 1914: • The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. • Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. • Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. • There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. • The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. • The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. • The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour. • The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year • A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist earned $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. • More than 95 percent of all births took place at home. • Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as “substandard.” • Sugar cost four cents a pound. • Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. • Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. • Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax and egg yolks for shampoo. • Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 848-9272 or visit this Internet Web site www.elitepostandpub.com, using the file number assigned to this case 14-28726. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Dated: 11/22/2014 Law Offices of Les Zieve, as Trustee 30 Corporate Park, Suite 450, Irvine, CA 92606.
