Fresh for the season: Top budget-friendly wardrobe trends

As the weather outside evolves to a fresh season, wardrobes are evolving too. Whether you’re shopping with your kids or you want a few new pieces for you and your spouse, incorporating some of the season’s top trends into your look is an easy way to stay stylish. The good news: this season is full of trends that are not only comfortable, but affordable too. Here are six trends for this season that will keep you looking great without breaking the bank: Innovative fabrics Being fashionable doesn’t mean

being uncomfortable. That’s where modern innovative fabrics take center stage. Many designers are now using fabrics that breath, stretch or wick perspiration. For example, dENiZEN from the Levi’s brand jeans, feature essential stretch, a denim that has a four-way stretch of up to 40 percent. These trendy jeans not only flatter in all the right places, they offer all-day comfort for any type of adventure. Colorful hats Beanies, fedoras, baseball caps, oh my! When it comes to fashion meeting function, there’s no better option than a great hat. Having a few in your collection means you can mix and match depending on your mood. Remember, accessories can be a good way to experiment with color, so a hat in rusty orange or vibrant teal might be the perfect way to integrate unique hues into your wardrobe. Classic patterns Checkers, houndstooth and pinstripes are classic patterns that never go out of style. Plaid is also -on-trend this season, popping up on runways around the world. Luckily, these patterns are available relatively cheap at many stores. Alternatively, hit vintage boutiques for affordable options that feature patterns that stand the test of time.

Slimming features From tanks that tuck and jeans that smooth, designs that slim are hot. Pants are a great way to incorporate this trend into your look. The innovative slimming features of dENiZEN from the Levi’s brand jeans create a fashion-forward look that complements any body shape. Available exclusively at Target, get a few in some of the season’s most popular styles, like the Essential Stretch Modern Skinny and Essential Stretch Modern Boot-cut. Lovely layers Layering is a fashionable way to stay warm when temperatures dip. Stay on trend by mixing textures and prints for a one-of-a-kind look. The trick to layering is to start with light fabrics and then build thickness with each layer. For example, start with a cotton tank or T-shirt, layer with a light cardigan or sweater, and finish with a thicker jean jacket or military-style blazer. Chunky knits From oversized sweaters to wool scarves, chunky knits are perfect to snuggle into on cool days. Cableknit sweaters are a great example, providing a preppy yet comfy look for both men and women. Keep in mind jewel tones are some of the hottest

colors; select a chunky knit in emerald green, royal purple or ruby red and you’ll have a ravishing, versatile addition to your wardrobe. These affordable trends will have you looking great no matter which way your personal style leans. From modern fabrics to classic patterns, your wardrobe will stand out this seasons and beyond.

Bedtime tips to encourage kids to get to sleep

Despite parents’ best efforts, bedtime can be the most stressful time of the day. Many kids fight sleep and resist going to bed, and questions of “but why do I have to go to bed?” are often answered with an unsatisfying, “Because I said so!” To h e l p e l i m i n a t e b e d t i m e frustrations, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommends parents take the following steps to positively influence their child’s sleep habits: * Keep a bedtime routine. A consistent routine (10 to 15 minutes long) - brushing teeth, changing into pajamas and reading a book - helps children go from alert and active to a quieter state, giving them the ability to fall asleep on their own. * Focus on timing. Kids who go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time every morning sleep better and have fewer night wakings. Studies also show that kids who go to bed around the same time each day have fewer behavior problems and perform better in school. “Research has shown consistent bedtimes and bedtime routines encourage cognitive development,” says Dr. M. Safwan Badr, president Page 4

of the AASM. “Educating children on necessary sleep health and establishing effective bedtime routines will help foster healthier lifestyles as they grow into adolescents and adults - reducing the epidemic of insufficient sleep in America.” * Teach and demonstrate the value of sleep. Getting enough sleep is critical to the health and wellbeing of every child, and sharing the importance of quality sleep will help them understand why. Two interactive apps developed by the AASM give parents new resources to teach their children about the value of sleep using tablet devices. The apps - I See the Animals Sleeping and The Animals Sleep - use interactive storytelling and activities to show animals’ sleep patterns, environment and adaptations. They illustrate how sleep is important for all animals, and people too. Based on two educational children’s picture books, the apps will help kids understand the need for a soothing sleep environment and the importance of developing healthy sleep habits that will last their lifetime. “It’s important that children develop an understanding of why they have to go to sleep because it will help them

The Newport News

grow and play and feel better during the day - and not just because their parents say so,” says Dr. Shalini Paruthi, spokesperson for the AASM. “The best method to teach children about a new topic is to start with something that interests them; in this case, that topic is animals.” The AASM recommends tablet use with children during the daytime for educational interaction. The illustrated books that inspired the apps are both available in hardcover for use as part of a child’s bedtime routine. The kids’ sleep apps are available for download on the iPad,

Kindle Fire or Android tablets. Parents should pay special attention to any persistent problems such as loud snoring, which is a warning sign for obstructive sleep apnea. If parents have concerns about how their child is sleeping, they should discuss them with their child’s doctor. I See the Animals Sleeping and The Animals Sleep are available for free download from the App Store, Google Play and Amazon. For more information on children’s sleep health or the AASM, visit SleepEducation. com.

Three tips to extend the life of your smart phone We sit on our smartphones, toss them into a purse and sometimes, quite accidentally, douse them in the toilet. And that doesn’t include what grimy-fingered kids do to smartphones as they play games. Generally, we are not very nice to the technology that has become central to our lifestyles. “Most smartphones are pretty durable, but they are not tanks,” says Iza Perez, a product marketing manager for Sony Mobile. “Smartphone damage is typically user-inflicted but they can be usercorrected just as easily.” Here are three tips she recommends to reduce wear-andtear on smartphones to extend their life: 1. Water salvage Let’s be honest: 75 percent of us use our smartphone in the restroom, according to marketing firm 11Mark. And software-maker Plaxo found that nearly one in five people drop their phones in the toilet. Hey, it happens. So what do you do if you’re one of those unfortunate souls that wets their phone? (Don’t forget rain storms and swimming pools.) First and most obvious: Dry it immediately with a soft, absorbent cloth. Second, remove the battery and place the damp phone and battery separately into an uncooked bag of rice to absorb the moisture. Don’t be in a rush to put it back together. And if that doesn’t work, well, you’ll likely need a new phone. Fortunately, many case makers and smartphone makers are introducing water-resistant features

to help minimize water damage. The Sony Xperia Z, for example, can stay submerged in 3 feet of water for 30 minutes, which should be plenty of time for a long bathroom break. 2. Keep it clean Smartphones are germ magnets because they are constantly touched with unwashed hands. Did you know that the average smartphone user checks their device 110 times a day? That’s according to a 2013 study by Locket, an app maker, who checked how often its 150,000 users activated their phones by swiping the screen or tapping a home button. To reduce germs from clinging to your phone they can live up to 48 hours, by the way - regularly clean your phone with microfiber cloth and a spritz of sanitizing screen-cleaning solution. Likewise, you can remove dirt and grime build up in crevices with a microfiber cloth or a cotton swap and a touch of solution. If you have

a case, remove it every once and a while to thoroughly clean that as well. 3. Battery preservation Aside from the cool touchscreen, the battery is a smartphone’s lifeblood. There are a few simple things you can do to extend battery life on a daily basis that will help reduce the number of times a recharge is needed. Dimming screen brightness and reducing the number of alerts you receive - particularly those that vibrate - will save a lot of juice. Closing apps when finished is also a plus, particularly those that use location features. Apps running in the background doing nothing still suck battery life.- Also, check your settings menu for battery saving features. Most phone makers now include software to automatically adjust usage - but not close opened apps. When shopping for a new phone, consider one with advanced battery-saving features.

Tips for new pet parents Whether you’re acquiring a new puppy or kitten for your household or adopting an adult pet from a shelter or rescue organization, the following tips will help you get off on the right foot with your newest family member. * What’s up, doc? Just as you require regular visits to your doctor and dentist to make sure you stay healthy, so does your new pet. A veterinary visit should be a oncea-year event, minimum, and more frequent check-ups may be needed, depending on your pet’s age and health status. Regular visits are likely to include a thorough exam, weigh-in, immunizations and parasite checks (a heartworm test and fecal exam). Blood tests and dental cleanings are also routine procedures. * Healthy eating. Your new pet may be eyeing your plate with interest, but don’t give in. Pets shouldn’t eat like people. Cats are carnivores; they need plenty of protein in their diets roughly twice the percentage that you do - and they need it in the form of meat, poultry or fish. And while your dog, like you, is an omnivore, that doesn’t mean he should share your meals. A food formulated especially for dogs is much better and treats should make up no more than 10 percent of a dog’s caloric intake. * Parasite prevention. You’ve probably heard of pests like

heartworms, intestinal parasites, fleas and ticks but understanding how and when to prevent them is a different matter. Dogs and cats can become infected with heartworms, although the resulting disease differs somewhat between the two species. Heartworm disease can be deadly, or it can reduce the quality of life of both dogs and cats. Mosquitoes spread heartworms and dogs and cats need to be protected year-round, thanks to a mosquito’s ability to survive in a variety of environments. A bonus is that many heartworm preventives also protect pets against other internal parasites. For more information on how to protect your new pet against heartworms and other parasites, talk to your veterinarian and visit the American Heartworm society website at heartwormsociety.org. * Bathing. Most of us wouldn’t dream of letting a day go by without a shower or bath. But daily bathing is unnecessary for pets and can dry out their skin and hair. Most dogs are fine with a bath every three months, unless they get extra dirty or have silky hair. Cats usually keep themselves clean without any help although brushing long-haired cats on a regular basis is advised to keep their fur tangle-free and help prevent hairballs. * Making a connection. Dogs and

cats relate to their owners in different ways. As a pack animal, dogs expect you to lead their pack and give them rules to follow. Dogs make faces - in fact, it’s estimated that they have 100 different facial expressions, thanks to their mobile ears. Cats attach to their people as social partners and use affectionate behaviors, such as purring, kneading and rubbing against you to show their affection. They’re also quite vocally expressive and can produce more than 100 different sounds. * Sleep habits. While cats have a reputation for dozing, both cats and

dogs spend more than half their time in slumber. Like babies, puppies and kittens sleep more than adults, although their sleep patterns can be erratic. Keep in mind that excessive sleeping can be a sign of boredom. Most pets will be glad to forego a nap for playtime or a walk. Bringing a pet into your home is one of the greatest joys in life, but it means new responsibilities. Understanding your pet’s behavior, as well as the do’s and don’ts of pet health care, will help make your bond with your pet a lasting one.

US Ambassador to Iraq Featured at World Affairs Council OC Photos by Ann Chatillon The World Affairs Council of Orange County held a special dinner at the Weston South Coast Plaza Hotel in Costa Mesa with featured keynote speaker, former Ambassador to Iraq Paul Bremer who spoke on the subject, “America-Still the Indispensable Nation: Lessons Learned in the Aftermath of Iraq and Afghanistan”. Orange County Chapter Chairman Tom Pappa welcomed approximately 200 attendees to the Event and among the distinguished guests in attendance, recognized were Lewis Johnson, CEO Alelo, Inc., UC-Irvine’s Dr. Peter Navarro, OCBJ’s Jerry Sullivan, Judge Jim Gray, Irvine Mayor Steven Choi, World Affairs Council National Board Members Timor Rafiq and Serge Tomassian, Joanne Sokolski, Orange County office of Protocol, and Dr. and Mrs. Kamal Batniji, who has performed extensive medical humanitarian work worldwide. Dinner was served – folks dined on mixed winter greens with dried cranberries, candied pecans, and crumbled goat cheese with balsamic vinaigrette for starters. Main course served was a delicious braised boneless short-ribs with forked mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables, then dessert had a trio of Pistachio Crème Brulee, dark chocolate mousse, and a wild berry shot. Ambassador Bremer started his day with breakfast with five students selected by the World Affairs Council where he answered questions about his job and the world at large. He then spent lunch with a group of 30 young professionals where he addressed some of the tasks included in his job as ambassador. The evening caped his visit in Orange County with his keynote address; he stated the United States remains the only capable leader to defend the values of the Western World. He also answered questions from the crowd, was very charming and received a standing ovation. During three decades as a professional diplomat, Bremer served in numerous capacities including Ambassador to the Netherlands and Ambassador at Large for Counter Terrorism in the Reagan administration. He was appointed Presidential Envoy to Iraq by President George W. Bush in 2003. The Ambassador received the State Department Superior Honor Award, two Presidential Meritorious Service Awards, and the Distinguished Honor Award from the Secretary of State. In 2004, Ambassador Bremer received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his service in Iraq. Paleo Diet Success - Simple Reasons Why Losing Weight with Paleo Diet Works By Troy Powers Ever thought about eating foods that the caveman ate during the Paleolithic Era? There are thousands who asked his or her self that exact same question, and subsequently decided to do it. Most folks never really think about the diet of a caveman very seriously, and assume that they whatever they could find. Quite a few will not try because they do not fully understand how the caveman functioned. Others are turned off simply by the quantity of work they think it could take. Still other folks have realized that the caveman was a healthy individual capable of great physical activity. Now just hold on here a moment! Are those valid reasons? Was any consideration given to the reasons in favor? Was that consideration fair and well balanced? The downsides were covered, but did the positives get a fair shake? Perhaps that should be reconsidered. Perhaps we ought to think about say, 5 reasons why perhaps you should eat the foods of the caveman’s diet as the advantages are tremendous. To start, the caveman had incredible strength and endurance. You have a

valid point when you note that is was essential for the caveman to posse’s great strength to be able survive during his time. This is a good point. Having said that, take into account that, the meals the caveman ate fueled his strength. Moreover, consider that over a typical day the caveman would walk 12 miles; this couldn’t be done unless proper food and nutrition was obtained. Second, the cavemen were built with a strong immune system. That is true because as the caveman was able to survice great dangers without any medical knowledge. As a result of all that, the caveman’s body’s defense mechanism must be strong being a persons defense mechanisms is relevant to the foods consumed. Third, the caveman failed to experience deadly heart disease we view so common today. In addition heart problems are probably the greatest killers in our world today as is also proportional towards the processed food everyone is eating at alarming rate! Fourth, the caveman did not have deadly diseases like colon cancer. Once again this deadly disease is

because of the meals we eat which usually is fast food or processed foods loaded with preservative. Fifth, the caveman was not obese. Now, look at all of those reasons and evaluate them. Those reasons produce a fairly strong case for why you need to continue with the caveman

diet more commonly known as the Paleo diet. Look them over once more and consider each of those factors. Don’t you think that perhaps, just maybe, you really should look into the caveman diet?

Veterinarians Warn Pet Owners of the Dangers of Pet Dehydration Balboa Veterinary Hospital in San Diego is warning pet owners about the dangers of animal dehydration during the warm summer months. According to the San Diego veterinarians, higher summer temperatures and extended outdoor playtime increases the risk for dehydration in dogs and cats. Dehydrated pets are at greater risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Without veterinary intervention, heat stroke can be fatal for pets. The animal hospital is urging pet owners to keep pets hydrated, learn the warning signs of heat stroke, and to be vigilant about pets’ overall health during the summer months. Warmer summer temperatures and increased outdoor activities raises the risk for dehydration and heat stroke in pets, says the veterinary team at Balboa Veterinary Hospital. The veterinarians are urging pet owners to be vigilant this summer and keep pets hydrated. “Dehydration is common among pets during the summer months,” said veterinarian Dr. Juan Pablo Romero. “Animals, just like humans, require additional water intake during warmer weather in order to stay hydrated. Additionally, due to increased outdoor

activities, pets are at a greater risk for over-exertion, which elevates the risk for dehydration.” Water is essential to all living beings, including dogs. Water makes up 80% of a dog’s body, says, Dr. Romero, and a drop in fluid levels can have a significant impact on an animal’s overall health. Dehydration occurs when fluid levels drop below normal due to decreased water intake or increased fluid loss. Symptoms of dehydration include sunken eyes, lethargy, dry mouth, loss of appetite, and depression. “During the summer, dehydration can occur after outdoor activities, such as an afternoon playing on the beach in Coronado, a long run, or even a vigorous game of fetch,” said Dr. Romero. “Pet owners need to be vigilant about not only providing water after outdoor activities, but managing their pet’s level of exertion.” Dr. Romero says pet owners should provide pets with constant access to fresh water and change it regularly. If pets will be outside for extended periods, the veterinarian recommends partially freezing a pet’s water bowl. As the day progresses, the water will melt, giving pets constant access to

fresh water. During the summer months, Balboa Veterinary Hospital reports an increase in the number of pets who are dehydrated or suffering from heat exhaustion. “Many of these cases could be prevented through vigilance and reduced outdoor activity,” said Dr. Romero. “Pets can become dehydrated even on overcast days that are not ‘hot’. Vigilance and early intervention are key to preventing more serious health problems.” Pet owners who suspect their pets

are dehydrated should contact their veterinarian, says Dr. Romero. Balboa Veterinary Hospital is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Associations (AAHA). The vet hospital provides comprehensive wellness care services, including vaccinations, annual exams, pet surgery, and dog grooming. With amazing scenery, trails, El Prado, three clubhouses and a full calendar of events, it’s no wonder Sendero is selling so quickly and was named 2014 Best Master-Planned Community not only in Orange County—but in the entire U.S. Now, Sendero Farm is nearly here. It’s a sustainable farm, including a produce stand, your own place to plant and farm-fresh eggs from Sendero hens. There’s even a friendly community farmer overseeing it all, from carrots and kale to arugula and herbs. Farm-to-fork dinner parties and seasonal events will take place amid the fruit orchard, community toolshed, children’s garden and fields of flowers.
