ENDLESS FAMILY FUN FOR PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S 25TH SUMMER FESTIVAL AT VERIZON WIRELESS AMPHITHEATER Summer is fast approaching, which means it’s almost time to pack a picnic and head to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine for six musicfilled evenings under the stars with Pacific Symphony, as the orchestra kicks off its 35th anniversary season. Presented by Hoag, the Symphony’s 2013 Summer Festival begins with the annual “July 4 Extravaganza,” featuring the heartfelt classics of Neil Diamond and a stunning fireworks finale. Patrons find themselves transported to another galaxy for “The Planets,” featuring guest conductor Case Scaglione and guest violinist Caroline Goulding, who performs Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. Then, get ready to rock-and-roll with J.T. & Friends in “Roll Over, Beethoven,” featuring chart-toppers from the past four centuries. And music from some of cinema’s most-treasured family films comes alive in “Pixar in Concert,” featuring music and video from “Toy Story,” “The Incredibles,” “Brave” and more! The Symphony concludes the season with “Tchaikovsky Spectacular,” featuring breathtaking cannons and fireworks during the “1812 Overture.” Plus, new this year: a special addon concert, “Video Games Live,” takes place Wednesday, July 17, at 8 p.m. Five-concert subscriptions range from $95-$465, with luxury season packages also available. Single tickets are $25-$99 and go on sale June 2. Gates open at 6 p.m. for picnicking at all concerts except Sunday, Aug. 4, when they open at 5:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony. org. Summer Festival 2013 is made possible by supporting sponsor, Orange County Register; major sponsor, Mercedes Benz; plus, video images are provided by Vizio. Media sponsors include K-Earth 101, KPCC, KUSC and PBS SoCal. “I always look forward to our summer series at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater,” says Music Director Carl St.Clair. “I get to share vibrant music with our gracious audience and wonderful orchestra; combine that with the beautiful Southern California night sky and you have the perfect combination! It’s a wonderfully unique atmosphere and the perfect setting for a concert.” It’s not just Caroline that’s sweet! The Symphony, led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman, opens the summer season with a Page 4
“July 4 Extravaganza,” featuring San Francisco-based Super Diamond, a rock-and-roll band that interprets Neil Diamond’s addictive, feel-good hits alongside the orchestra. Favorite Diamond chart-toppers such as “Sweet Caroline,” “Heartlight,” “Song Sung Blue,” “America” and other classics that have been delighting generations of Americans for years fill the amphitheater with a festive holiday spirit. The concert takes place on Thursday, July 4, at 8 p.m., and includes patriotic favorites, a salute to the U.S. armed forces and a jaw-dropping fireworks finale that pays homage to the nation’s troops and our nation’s history. “As citizens of the U.S.A., the Fourth of July is our annual opportunity to come together to celebrate our beloved country with music,” says Maestro Kaufman. “Each year on our July Fourth concert, we bring our audience the sounds of musical America. This year, we’ll remember the 150th anniversary of Gettysburg with the Oscar-nominated music of John Williams from ‘Lincoln,’ as well as Randy Edelman’s stirring music from the film ‘Gettysburg.’ I am anticipating a memorable musical experience for not only our audience, but for the musicians and most certainly for the conductor (aka, yours truly).” Blast off! The Symphony takes concertgoers on a journey to the far reaches of the solar system for “The Planets,” a concert filled with music inspired by the galaxy itself. This intergalactic multimedia event includes high-definition images from the Hubble Space Telescope projected on the big screen above the stage, as the Symphony performs Gustav Holst’s invigorating “The Planets.” Scaglione joins the Symphony as the concert’s guest conductor along with guest violinist Goulding, who plays Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5. Scaglione currently serves as the assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic and in 2011, was the recipient of the Conductor’s Prize by the Solti Foundation U.S.—an esteemed honor that has only been awarded three times in the foundation’s history. A vivacious violinist, Goulding has received considerable recognition for her musical talent. In 2009, she won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, received the Helen Armstrong Violin Fellowship and received a Grammy nomination for her debut recording. She was also the recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2011. This concert takes place Saturday, July 13, at 8 p.m.

Attention gamers! In a unique and special summer event, the Symphony presents “Video Games Live,” a concert celebrating the exciting collaborations of music, art and interactive technology that make up the video game industry. With liveaction visuals, synchronized lighting, exclusive video footage, soloists and electronic percussionists—plus the powerful sound of the full symphony orchestra—it’s an explosion of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. This concert features music and video from the most popular video games of all time, including “Diablo,” “Halo,” “Guitar Hero” and “Warcraft,” as well as the nostalgic classics from yesteryear such as “Frogger,” “Mario,” “Sonic,” “Zelda” and more! Plus, selected audience members are chosen to come up on stage and play games while the orchestra performs. Taking place Wednesday, July 17, at 8 p.m., tickets are sold separately ($25-$65), not as part of the Summer Festival package. Get ready to dance! Join the Symphony, Maestro St.Clair and J.T. & Friends for a night that is sure to prove widely entertaining. “Roll Over, Beethoven” juxtaposes some of the most popular works by Beethoven, Mozart and Tchaikovsky with rockand-roll hits from the 1940s to today. Joining the orchestra onstage is J.T. & Friends—a 46-musician band led by John Tu of Kingston Technology—which has brought down the house at the Symphony’s Gala for the past three years with its myriad of fun-loving songs by the Temptations, Elvis, Rod Stewart, Gloria Gaynor and more! Now the band joins the orchestra onstage for a powerhouse of sound and an evening that is sure to have the audience dancing in their seats! “This is going to be a great night at Verizon,” says St.Clair. “I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday evening than listening to classics by the masters and the adored hits of rock-and-roll. It’s the perfect fusion
of the two genres and it’s definitely going to be a great time.” The concert takes place Sunday, Aug. 4, at 7:30 p.m. Gates open early at 5:30 p.m. Family night! Beloved children’s films and music come together for the Symphony’s presentation of “Pixar in Concert,” on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 8 p.m. The orchestra brings to life the cherished musical moments of such popular and captivating films as “Up,” “Brave,” “Cars,” “Wall-E” and many more. While the Symphony fills the amphitheater with music from the film scores, scenes from the movies play on a big screen overhead, giving concertgoers a truly unique multi-media experience. Award-winning conductor Sarah Hicks joins the Symphony as a guest, bringing her ingenious talent and artistry to the stage. Hicks graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a degree in composition. She has received numerous prestigious awards, among them the Doris Cohen Levy Prize for conducting and the Thomas Hoopes Prize for composition, both from Harvard University. This presentation is licensed by Disney Concert Library © Disney/Pixar. End summer with a magnificent bang! The Summer Festival series concludes its season on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 8 p.m., with “Tchaikovsky Spectacular.” Filled with cannons, fireworks and thundering scores, this concert is the perfect culmination to the festival’s season and a fantastic way to salute summer’s end. Led by St.Clair, the program includes Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 4” and “1812 Overture.” The concert also features the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition medalist. “This concert serves as both a farewell and a salutation,” says St.Clair. “While we bid adieu to summer, we greet the approaching fall season with a hearty hello. It’s a marvelous way to celebrate both the ending and beginning of two wonderful seasons.”

by Amanda Austin Memorial Day is more than just a weekend off from work, an excuse to throw a picnic, or a reason to take a weekend trip, it is a national holiday. The history behind Memorial Day seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle throughout the years. With May 27th growing closer, take time to familiarize yourself with the history of Memorial Day, and why we celebrate this holiday. Memorial Day, originally known as “Decoration Day,” was established on May 5 1868 by General John Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. The first observation of Memorial Day took place on May 30th 1868, by decorating the graves of fallen Union and Confederate soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery. Here is an excerpt from General Logan’s “General Orders No. 11,” officially declaring “Decoration Day.” “The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and
hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.” New York was the first state to officially recognize Memorial Day as a Holiday in 1873, and all of the Northern states had followed suit by 1890. The Southern states didn’t recognize Memorial Day until after World War 1 when it was changed from recognizing soldiers who lost their lives fighting in the Civil War, to soldiers who lost their lives fighting in any war America participated in. The reason that students and employees are given the day off on Memorial Day, is so they can properly observe the holiday. When the holiday was originally established nationally it was intended to give patrons the opportunity to visit the graves of our
fallen soldiers, attend memorials, fly the American flag at half staff until noon, and acknowledge the “National Moment of Remembrance” at 3:00 PM. The “National Moment of Remembrance” is when everyone has a moment of silence and if you are in a public place “Taps” is played. So, this year on Memorial weekend take a moment to remember why you don’t have to go to work or school. If you are taking a trip with your family, make your rest stop at a memorial or Veteran’s cemetery and observe the men who have fought for our country. If you are having a get together at your home, or attend one at someone else’s home, give a little speech at 3:00 and call for a moment of silence to remind your friends and family why you are all able to get together that weekend.
If all else fails, immortality can be assured By a spectacular error. -John Kenneth Galbraith The Newport News

Memorial Day Table Setting Ideas Memorial Day is great time to celebrate and have fun! We often gather for and plan parties, lunches, events or dinners on this wonderful occasion. It is nice to present our food and drinks on a wonderfully decorated table. If you are hosting such an event, here are some great tips for decorating your table on Memorial Day! My first and favorite choice is the red, white and blue table setting. This is a pretty and colorful way to show your Memorial Day spirit! This table setting idea has many variations that you can choose from! You can use a red table cloth, blue table cloth or white table cloth for this table setting. My favorite is the red table cloth. It does not show spills and stands out. I like to use white plates. If it is an informal gathering or party, white paper plates can be used, though I recommend the plastic plates or sturdiest plates you can find. This will make your guests more comfortable and they will be less likely to spill their plate. Use white napkins. This can be paper napkins or cloth ones. Serve the beverages in blue cups. They can be blue plastic cups or blue glasses. The effect of the white plates, white napkins and blue cups look very nice on a red tablecloth. Add a beautiful
basket or vase of red, white and blue carnations in the center of the table. I like to use silk flowers. If you like, you can use real red and white carnations. For an added touch, place small flags in the vase or basket, among the flowers! If you decide to use a blue table cloth, use red or white plates, white napkins and blue or red plastic cups or clear cups or clear glasses. If you use a white table cloth, red plates, white napkins and blue cups or glasses look wonderful. For silverware, any type can go with this idea, even white plastic. This Memorial Day table setting is easy to set up and very affordable. It looks great! For a Spring like look that is festive and very pretty, use a flowered table cloth. For plates, the color choice is white, napkins can be white and the beverages can be served in clear plastic cups or clear glasses. Use silverware or white plastic ware. A large vase of all different types and colors of flowers look great in the center of this table setting. You can also just use white carnations in a basket. This table setting is colorful, attractive and very easy to do. It is very nice and makes a great Memorial Day table setting, if you do not wish to use the red, white and blue color theme. For an outdoor gathering, a red
and white checkered table cloth looks very festive with white plates, white napkins, white plastic ware and red or blue cups or glasses. My preference is using red cups or glasses. I like keeping to the red and white theme on this idea. It looks fancy, yet simple. I add a basket or vase of red and white carnations to the center of the table and it gives the table setting a fun and fancy look. This Memorial Day table setting is sure to please! Depending on how much money you want to spend, you can find many Memorial Day themed table cloths to buy. Some are flag themed and some are red, white and blue checkers, stripes or a mix. If you use these, use white napkins, white plates, white plastic ware or silverware, and blue cups or blue glasses. Place a basket or vase of white carnations in the
center of the table. You can also place small flags in the flower arrangement. This table setting idea is creative and looks great! These Memorial Day table setting ideas are sure to make your holiday table look special. They are very easy to do and cost very little. Your table will look beautiful, festive and fun!

Vietnam Memorial Volunteers Gear Up for Memorial Day by Yancy Caruthers When visiting one of D.C.’s most popular monuments, one is likely to notice a few people in yellow hats, talking to visitors and answering questions about the history of the 30-year old monument. Charlie Harootunian is one of those volunteers. A veteran of the war himself, he served with the II Corps in the Central Highlands of Vietnam for a year in 1967-68. He started working at The Wall in 1986, just four years after the wall was built.. “When I first started, we would see the children of those names,” he reveals. “Now we are seeing the grandchildren.” Under his arm is tucked a copy of a directory, which he uses to help people find specific names on The Wall’s dozens of panels. He also carries a supply of paper and pencils to help visitors create etchings if they wish. “We see thousands of people every day, young and old, and lots of international visitors,” Charlie said. I was surprised to learn that Char-
lie isn’t a local - he travels from his home in Massachusetts to spend a weekend at the Wall. He assures me that this isn’t unusual. A volunteer named Nancy, who worked with the Red Cross during the Vietnam war, travels thousands of miles from Alaska each year to spend some time educating visitors. Her brother’s name is carved in one of the center panels, where she will tell her stories to those willing to listen. Nancy is expected to join them to welcome the huge crowds drawn by Memorial Day weekend. A ceremony will be held at the monument, but the day’s biggest event will be “Rolling Thunder,” a gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts who ride in honor of veterans everywhere. Groups such as the Patriot Guard Riders and the Combat Motorcycle Veterans of America will participate. A number of “Gold Star Mothers,” a term given to those who have lost a son or daughter in armed conflict, will lead the procession. “It keeps getting bigger every single year,” Charlie says enthusiastically.

KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival Announces Line-Up Saddleback College Radio Station KSBR (88.5 FM) is proud to announce that Spencer Day, Jackiem Joyner, Keiko Matsui, Bill Cantos, Chris Standring and Sarah Gazarek will be among the more than 30 musicians appearing at this year’s KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival. The Birthday Bash takes place this Sunday, May 26, 2013 on the Village Green of Oso Viejo Park in Mission Viejo. Some of the other artists appearing at this year’s event include trumpeter and one of the founders of Tower of Power, Greg Adams and two-time Grammy Award winner Paul Brown. As always, there will be at least seven very special guests who, because of contractual obligations, cannot be announced until they come on stage. Previous surprise artists have included Dave Koz, Mindi Abair, Patti Austin, Chris Botti, Larry Carlton, Brian Culbertson, Bob James, Boney James, Joe Sample, Tom Scott, and Peter White. “At most festivals, one band takes the stage, followed by a break, and then another band, and so forth. But, at the Bash, the headliners leave their bands behind and play with each other in an all-star musical party,” according to Saddleback College Broadcast Services Director Terry Wedel. The concert is co-sponsored by the City of Mission Viejo. This will be the 25th year of the station’s largest fundraising event, and it celebrates the 35th anniversary of jazz on KSBR (88.5 FM). Organizers are excited to announce the second annual Taste of the Bash, which was a wildly successful element introduced last year and will again feature more than 20 restaurants showing off their finest creations. The Taste is an added value so those purchasing tickets to the concert will be admitted to the Taste of the Bash for no additional charge. The Birthday Bash is the major fundraising event for KSBR, Mission Viejo’s own community radio station at Saddleback College. Some of the restaurants that are confirmed to serve are 2nd Floor Restaurant in Huntington Beach, California Pizza Kitchen in Mission Viejo, Acapulco Restaurant in Orange, Sundried Tomato in San Juan Capistrano, Bistro K in Laguna Niguel, Slater’s 50/50 in Lake Forest, Citrus Fresh Grill in Aliso Viejo, as well as wineries Hamilton Oaks Vineyards from Trabuco Canyon, Napa Cellars in Napa Valley and breweries Cismontane Beer in Rancho Santa Margarita and Hangar 24 Brewery in Redlands. More restaurants and wineries that will be at the Taste of the Bash can be found at www.ksbr.org. Platinum and Premium Gold VIP guests will be treated to a fine dining experience by Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen in Anaheim, Savannah Chop House in Dana Point, Delizie Ristorante in Mission Viejo, The Ranch Sports Grill in Ladera Ranch and Vintage Steak House in San Juan Capistrano; dessert will be provided by Tommy Bahama in Newport Beach and MegaLoad Chocolates. It’s a Grind Coffee in Mission Viejo will also be serving coffee. La Pan’s Catering in Mission Viejo, Ricardo’s Place in San Juan Capistrano, and Two Guys Grilling from Dana Point will be providing meals for the Bash All-Stars and their families. The event will include a special tribute to Veterans. Saddleback College’s Veterans Memorial is the most significant tribute to veterans at any community college campus in the nation. In recognition of this event and the role that the college’s VETS (Veterans Education and Transition Services) Center plays in the community, the festivities will include a color guard performance and a special musical tribute to kick off the concert. In addition, veterans and active military personnel may purchase general admission tickets for just $25 through the Saddleback College VETS Center (949) 582-4252. The Center is open Monday – Thursday 9am to 4:30pm and Friday 9am to 12 noon. Doors open at 3:30 pm; the Taste of the Bash will run from 3:30 P.M. to Page 10

Embracing the Obscure HAPPY GRAPES
By David White This past weekend in Sonoma County, California, 17 vintners gathered for a wine tasting they dubbed “The 7 Percent Solution.” As the organizers explained, “roughly 93 percent of Northern California vineyard acreage is planted to eight major grape varietals. The remaining 7 percent is home to numerous lesser-known varietals, [which] are finding anchor with a small but growing number of winemakers.” The event enabled consumers to explore the wines being produced by California’s revolutionary vintners -- those willing to embrace the state’s vast and varied climate by avoiding popular grapes and bottling the obscure. Whether they’re producing Pastor Rev. Fred K. Bailey
unusual varietals or exploring unheralded regions, these winemakers are worth celebrating. That certain regions of California might be better suited to, say, Albarino than Chardonnay makes sense. Across the globe, commercial wine is produced from a whopping 1,368 different grape varieties. It defies logic to assume that grapes native to central France will thrive in all the world’s new vineyards. This topic was explored at this year’s Drink Local Wine conference by Joseph Fiola, Ph.D., a University of Maryland professor who has spent over 25 years researching and teaching about experimental viticulture. During his lecture, Fiola spent a great deal of time praising the Old World for its commitment to growing varieties that are adapted to local growing conditions. “Local varieties have been growing in those areas for hundreds, maybe thousands of years,” he explained. “Year in year out, they get ripe. Year in year out, winemakers can control production. Those areas know how to grow the grapes; they know how to make good wine. And it’s the local grapes that are the best. [Winemakers]

aren’t going to grow Cabernet Sauvignon all over Italy because people know the name!” Fiola went on to compare southern Italy’s climate to southern Maryland’s. Yet he acknowledged the temptation to focus on well-known varieties. “Trying to convince a Maryland winery that has to worry about marketing to people who can barely pronounce Chardonnay to sell Nero d’Avola, Negroamaro, Sagrantino?” he asked, naming three esoteric varieties from Italy. “That presents a challenge,” he conceded. Europe has an advantage, of course. The continent has been producing wine for thousands of years, so vintners there understand which grapes do best. In France, for example, winemakers in Burgundy know to focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Just as German vintners recognize that Riesling thrives in the country’s Mosel region, Spanish vintners recognize that Albarino thrives in Galicia. Wine production in the United States is still in its infancy. But winemakers know that American consumers enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc, so that’s what most produce.
Only the most courageous vintners would eschew these varieties. One of these courageous vintners is Matthew Rorick of Forlorn Hope, who poured at this weekend’s tasting in Sonoma. Since 2005, he has been producing “rare creatures from appellations unknown and varieties uncommon.” His “rare creatures” are truly unusual. He produces delightful reds from Sangiovese and Barbera, two Italian grapes that few California winemakers take seriously. He produces a delicious Verdelho, a white wine that’s typically associated with Portugal. He produces the nation’s only 100-percent St. Laurent, a thought-provoking, highly aromatic red that’s almost impossible to find outside Austria and the Czech Republic. Each year, he crafts more than a dozen different wines -- and virtually all are produced in lots of fewer than 2,500 bottles. The fact that 17 vintners like Rorick were able to fill a room this past weekend is a testament to the fact that an increasing number of winemakers are willing to take risks. And, perhaps more importantly, American consumers are growing more comfortable exploring the unknown.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 573-1965 or visit this Internet Web site www.priorityposting. com, using the file number assigned to this case 13-49853. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The Declaration pursuant to California Civil Code, Section 2923.5(a) was fulfilled when the Notice of Default was recorded on 2/8/2013 Date: 5/9/2013 Old Republic Default Management Services, A Division of Old Republic National Title Insurance Company, as Trustee 500 City Parkway West, Suite 200, Orange, CA 92868-2913 (866) 263-5802 For Sale Information Contact: Priority Posting & Publishing (714) 573-1965 Heather Marsh, Trustee Sale Officer ““We are attempting to collect a debt, and any information we obtain will be used for that purpose.” P1038747 5/17, 5/24, 05/31/2013
