How to choose a high quality swimsuit The only thing worse than choosing the wrong swimsuit for your shape is finding the perfect swimsuit and have it fall apart before a full season of wear. These tips will help you become a savvy swimsuit shopper that knows how to choose a bathing suit that is perfect for your body shape and one that will last throughout the summer. Full Fabric Lining A swimsuit with a full fabric lining will prevent anything from showing through the fabric and preserve the bathing suit’s shape. A swimsuit that only has a few spots lined will bunch up in those lined areas and give a bumpy appearance after a few washings. Also look for a suit that has the same color lining as the outer fabric. The color matched fabric will camouflage any spots where the lining may peek through while you’re suited up. Lycra is Your Friend Lycra provides the support of a friend, to both your body and the swimsuit. Look for a bathing suit that contains at least 18% lycra so it will retain its shape through a multitude of launderings and the lycra content will smooth out your shape while you’re wearing suit. The greater lycra con-
tent, the more holding power the suit will have on unwieldy body parts, but the suit will also be more difficult to get in and out of, especially when wet. Double Stitched Durability To prevent things from popping open and popping out while you’re frolicking in the water, look for double stitching on the swimsuit’s key stress points. The points where the front and back of straps are attached to suit’s
bodice should be double stitched, as should all other strap connections. Bottoms with elastic waist bands should be double stitched around the waist bands too. Layer upon Layer Layers hide figure flaws and add details to a swimsuit. Skirts, shirring and drapes are great for helping us to accentuate the positive and downplay the negative. Just note that the more
fabric a bathing suit has, the longer it will take to dry. Layering (or some other decorative detail) on the top will make things appear bigger than they really are and draw attention towards the upper body. Camouflaging a problem bottom half is often done best with a separate sarong or wrap. The sarong can be worn (or removed) as needed and be kept dry.

The discussion will be focused on how artists find and use inspiration in their work. Both artists have exhibited at the Festival of Arts since the early 90’s. Together they collaborated on a design for the Festival of Arts Runway Fashion Show, which they will bring to the Thursday Art Talk. Using the costume as an example, they will share their inspirations, combination of materials, vision, and the process that went into creating the look. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to create their own mixed media piece during the discussion. This is one of several topics discussed at the Festival’s weekly Art Talks: A Lecture Series. Each Thursday from 12 - 1pm through August 29, Festival artists lead conversations about their medium, inspiration, and careers in this fascinating and stimulating series. ABOUT MIA MOORE: Mia Moore has been creating original, handcrafted collage artwork since 1983. The Asian influences in Moore’s artwork came into play in 1986 when she adopted her daughter of Korean descent. The colors and textures of antique paper are prominent in her work, and this gives it an antiquated feel and place in a modern world of uncertainty and chaos. Mia has been a Festival of Arts exhibitor since 1994.

Family day at the festival of the arts august 3 Families and children are invited to enjoy a day full of art and entertainment at the Festival of Arts Family Art Day on Saturday, August 3, 2013. From 12noon – 3pm, the grounds will be full of fun activities, hands-on art projects, and more! Family Art Day is free with Festival Admission, and children 12 and under receive free admission all summer long. When children arrive, they will be given a booklet containing coupons that they’ll get to redeem for the dif-
ferent projects and attractions. Kids will be able to create their own works of art at the Festival’s ceramic and mixed media workshops and even have the opportunity to make Hawaiian crafts and pendants with Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa. It’s a great way to inspire conversation with the whole family about topics like color, proportion, realism vs. abstraction, 2D vs 3D and all the elements of design. Additionally, the grounds will be alive with entertainment for all ages with marionette shows, balloon art, face painting, live music and more! Gina’s Alfresco will even be getting in on the fun offering a free snack for children. “We love to expose people to the arts, especially children,” said Susan Davis, director of special events for the Festival of Arts. “It’s the perfect event to stimulate conversation and promote the excitement of the total art experience.”

William and Kate name Britain’s new royal heir George By Costas Pitas (Reuters) Britain’s Prince William and his wife Kate have chosen three traditional royal names by calling their new-born baby boy George Alexander Louis, William’s office said on Wednesday. The baby, born on Monday to global media frenzy and third in line to the British throne, will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge, Kensington Palace said in a statement. All three names had been among the favorites listed by British bookmakers, and the announcement was relatively quick by royal standards; it took a month for the name of Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, to be announced, and a week for William, his eldest son. George has been the name of six British kings. The last, George VI, was the father of Queen Elizabeth and reigned from 1936 to 1952. Alexandra, the female form of Alexander, is one of the queen’s middle names, and was also the name of the queen consort of King Edward VII at the start of the last century. Louis is one of William’s middle names, and was the given name of Prince Charles’s mentor and greatuncle Louis Mountbatten, who was assassinated by Irish nationalist IRA guerrillas in 1979. The baby’s arrival on Monday
triggered frenetic coverage from global media who had camped for days on the doorstep of the London hospital where he was born, as well as celebratory gun salutes and the illumination of London landmarks in blue. The choice of name, relatively short by royal standards, does not necessarily mean the baby will eventually become King George VII. The queen’s father was christened Albert, but chose to be crowned as George VI. “It’s interesting that they chose to go with just three names. It’s almost as if the royal family is coming down with ordinary people, who tend to have fewer middle names than monarchs,” historian Suzannah Lipscomb, told Sky News. “It is a name that none can find any problems with. George itself can’t be shortened in any obvious offensive way ... They’ve probably gone for something that is safe.” Some commentators said the names appeared to have no direct connection to Kate’s side of the family. “They’ve kept it very simple by not trying to represent all parts of the family,” royal historian Tracy Borman told Sky News. “I think there seems to be genuine joy, warmth and good feeling about this birth and the duke and duchess are so popular. People will be nothing
but pleased.” The interest stirred by the birth has given a further boost to the royal family after the public’s enthusiastic celebration last year of Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne, and Kate and William’s lavish Westminster Abbey wedding in 2011. The monarchy’s popularity sank to a low in the 1990s after a string of divorces and the death of William’s mother, Diana, after which many said the royal family’s response made it appear out of touch with public sentiment. The left-leaning Guardian newspaper described the turnaround as “an incredible recovery”, although its website offered readers a ‘Republican’ button to block out royal stories. Most British newspapers devoted their front pages to big pictures of Tuesday’s first photocall, with headlines such as “Hello World” and “Our Little Prince”. But after weeks of fevered coverage, the couple are expected to try to keep a low profile. They spent Wednesday at Kate’s parents’
home in the village of Bucklebury, in southern England. The royal couple have been living in a remote part of Wales, where William works as a rescue helicopter pilot, but are expected to move later this year to London’s Kensington Palace, William’s childhood home. Royal observers say William is determined to shield his son from the obsessive attention that plagued his mother Diana, pursued relentlessly by the media and killed in a car crash in 1997 after her car was chased by photographers. “William knows only too well that his baby son will be the new favorite creature in the circus he grew up in,” wrote Daily Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson. “Every plan he and Kate have put in place is to protect him.”

Redondo Breakwater: Surfing is a great pastime at Redondo Beach, where the Breakwater waves move in from the left side at over 6 feet and can hold up to 20 feet. It has sandy bottom with difficult surfing level. You are warned that a novice surfer will not make it; you must be advanced in your arts to ride the breakwater waves here. It is a great location for advanced surfers for its big waves. International Surf Festivals are held here
Malibu Point:Malibu is among the Southern California Surf Spots. It isone of the world’s most famous long, slow point breaks, with strong reef waves often coming from the right side of surfing. Great for intermediate to skilled surfer. Trestles: located in a hidden area of San Clemente, Trestles is known for its reef breaks coming from the right. The bottom is filled with rocky reef so you are warned to be at least intermediate surfer to attend. It can have a busy crowd who enjoy the renowned California break produced here. It is known in Orange County for its consistent and great surf. The fact that it is in a hidden location makes it extra special for locals to enjoy it.
Santa Monica Chevron Reef : Chevron Reef is Los Angeles County’s first artificial reef breaks created by oil firm Chevron and the Surfrider Foundation in a beach erosion settlement. It is situated just off the coast of Marina Del Rey, close to LAX. Great wave breaks at four feet and can hold to 15 feet or more in all directions. Seal Beach Pier: Seal Beach is among the top Long Beach Southern California Surf spots. It has pier breaks surrounded by sandbar reef. Its rivermouth wave comes from the right and the left to break in any type of conditions, especially when in a south swell. It is great for intermediate surfer.

The first one was at Hamilton Oaks Winery San Juan with the Boot Campaign; the second event was at the City National Grove of Anaheim with the Semper Fi Fund. Starting with the Boot Campaign, Hamilton Oaks Winery San Juan Capistrano was the setting as over 100 Marines from Camp Pendleton and their families were invited to a full blown BBQ dinner, music and fun hosted by the FX Channel and their hit show “Sons of Anarchy”. The vineyard was the perfect place to host these families as the children were able to run around on the grass, get their faces painted, enjoy balloon animals along with pop corn and cotton candy. Bad to the Bone BBQ in San Juan Capistrano served a true backyard bar-b-que feast for the event. The marines had a great time with their families, but what they did not know was the surprise visit from the Sons of Anarchy cast, Theo Rossi aka “Juan Carlos ‘Juice’ Ortiz”, Kim Coats aka “Alex ‘Tig’ Trager”, and Mark Boone Junior aka “Robert ‘Bobby’ Munson”. All three came riding up on their motorcycles as the set was staged for a promotional filming for the hit show as well. The event was staged for the Marines paying tribute to them as well as giving awareness to the Boot Campaign with the cast members helping out The Brotherhood of United States Marine Corps Riders came out to by signing autographs and taking photos with everyone. Talking with Theo, show their support for the Boot Campaign at Hamilton Oaks Winery Kim and Mark afterwards, they told me they are honored to help out in any San Juan. At the City National Grove of Anaheim, about 300 active and retired members of local law enforcement, fire and military personnel were at the 5th Annual SafetyHeroes.org fundraiser. Notable attendees including Ted Nugent, Leigh Steinberg, and Davey Lind along with SafetyHeroes.org Founder and event producer, Mark Peacock of Newport Beach, all delivered moving presentations and over $20,000 was raised in support of the cause. SafetyHeroes.org Founder, Mark J. Peacock of Newport Beach opened the evening welcoming guests and introducing members of Semper Fi Fund with a touching video detailing the organizations efforts. Double leg amputee, MSgt Davey Lind, USMC (Ret), presented his personal story and how Semper Fi Davey Lind with Ted Nugent and Mark Peacock, founder of SafetyHeFund provided priceless assistance in his recovery process. While talking with Nugent, he told me he’s humbled by the military families and their sacrifices they make, “It takes a special specimen to see a fire and race towards it...they bring a spirit of righteousness...that’s a unique attribute that only a small percentage qualify for, and I don’t qualify, but if I qualify to be among them, there’s no words to describe how cool that is.” Multiple Taylor guitars, original artwork and other collectible items signed by Ted Nugent were part of the silent auction that helped raise funds for the cause. Other bidding items included sports lessons and outdoors activities donated by various Olympic athletes that were in attendance at the event including two-time USA Olympic kayaking team member, Cathy Marino and Olympic track cyclist, Connie Paraskevin among others. The Semper Fi Fund directs urgently needed resources to post 9 11 members of the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard who serve in support of Marine forces. Body Surfing Guide: An Easy Technique to Ride Your First Wave By Jeanne Rose Body surfing can be a very fun and enjoyable experience for someone who likes riding the waves on the beach. Body surfing is essentially when you have the ability to ride a wave with your body instead of a surfboard. You do not usually need equipment for body surfing since you are using your body, which makes it a great spontaneous thing to do. Body surfing can be very dangerous because it is not as easy as it might look so you should always have someone with you the first time. Body surfing is something everyone should do at least one time in their life if they enjoy the water and riding the waves. As with most things in life, body surfing will take time and practice in order to perfectly ride a wave. If you want to body surf but you are unsure how to go about it exactly, here are some techniques you can use to body surf. Body surfing does not require you to use any equipment, although you might want to get a pair of swimming fins. The swim fins are something you will need if you want to body surf farther out into the water, which is something you should only do after you have gotten the hang of it You can get basic swim fins or the body board-
ing swim fins at surf shops or other retail stores in the sporting goods section for about 30 dollars. If you are body surfing early in the season or in cold water you might also want to buy a wetsuit which will protect your body against the coldness of the water. Generally, a wetsuit will cost you about 50 dollars to 100 dollars depending on the brand and style. You can find a wetsuit at your local swim or surf shop or at many retail stores in the sporting goods section. If this is your first time body surfing, you want to be in the more shallow water and have someone else with you in case of an accident. You never want to try body surfing for the first time alone and you might even want to make sure a lifeguard is on duty at your location. A wave can come up and hit you very fast and take you under the water, and if you are not skilled in swimming in the ocean then you might get into trouble. The best beaches for water surfing are the beaches will shallow grades which will have more gentle waves. You can go pretty far out into the water on a beach where the waves are gentle and it is best for a beginner. You do not want to go to a beach that has a sudden drop off in the water
depth because you can really get caught in a bad wave. You want to find a wave that does not crash suddenly and that is about one to four feet in height. Do not be body surfing right on the beach; make sure you are farther out into the waters. Once you have found that perfect wave to body surf then you can focus on the technique to try to body surf correctly. You want to stand so your back is to the wave and you are facing toward the beach itself and wait until the wave is a few feet behind you. Push off from the bottom of the water and begin to move your legs like you are trying to kick. The wave will lift you off and then you want to angle your body so you are facing downward. The lower half of your body should be rising above the top half of your body. Make your body long and straight like a surfboard as you begin to slide in the wave and keep your legs together. Hold your arms straight out in front of your head and arch your back a little. Once you do this you should be sliding on your chest most of the time. You can paddle your arms and
legs a little to keep your body in that position and it will help you body surf the wave. When the wave begins to break then you want to turn away from the wave or dive under the water so the wave can pass. When you first start body surfing, you want to glide straight down the waves so that you get the hang of the feel of the experience. After you have gotten experience you can then proceed to change your formation and body surf the waves in other directions. It might take several days or weeks for you to successfully body surf the first time so be patient. The main thing to remember about body surfing is you want to keep your body in a position similar to a surfboard so you can ride the wave without causing yourself to go under the water.

Riesling: Oregon’s Best Kept Secret HAPPY GRAPES
By David White If you play word association with a wine enthusiast and throw out the word “Oregon,” chances are pretty high that the response will be “Pinot Noir.” For good reason. In the 1960s, a handful of young vintners moved to the state, all passionate about wine and eager to be a part of something new. Within a decade, those who believed Oregon’s climate would be too cold and
wet for grapes were proven wrong when a Pinot Noir from one of those trailblazers, David Lett, took home gold at the 1979 Wine Olympics in Paris. Over the next 30 years, hundreds of winemakers set up shop in Oregon, eager to produce world-class Pinot Noir. Today, the state’s wine industry promotes itself with posters and other promotional items that say “Drink Pinot, Think Oregon.” But while Lett and other pioneers were focusing on Pinot Noir, a number of other vintners were giving it a go with Riesling. Indeed, about a quarter of Oregon’s vineyards were planted to Riesling in 1980. As Pinot Noir acreage exploded, however, Riesling became overshadowed. Today, though, Oregon Riesling is experiencing a resurgence. And it’s better than ever. Many consumers recoil at the sight of Riesling, as it’s still associated with the sweet, simple German wines of yesteryear, like Blue Nun. Wines like these are still produced and they’ll always have fans. But they do a dis-

service to true Riesling. It’s not by accident that Riesling has long been known as the “noblest of the noble grapes.” For one thing, Riesling is honest. Because most Riesling is fermented in stainless steel, it isn’t manipulated through oak aging or other winemaking techniques. So it’s remarkably transparent and excels in capturing terroir, or a wine’s sense of place. As Robert Parker, the world’s most famous wine critic, once explained, “If you want to talk about terroir, talk about German Rieslings or Alsace Rieslings, where the wines are naked -- there’s no makeup.” Riesling is also quite versatile. Some of the world’s best Rieslings are syrupy and lusciously sweet, while others are bone dry. Most fall somewhere in between, and all are extremely fragrant. And thanks to its high acidity, Riesling is an extremely adaptable food wine. Misconceptions still abound, but fortunately, consumers are starting to recognize that Riesling is a serious grape.
I recently tasted through a dozen Oregon Rieslings and was impressed with all them. One bottle worth finding is Chehalem’s “Three Vineyard Riesling.” Marked by exotic citrus fruits, green apples, and chalk-like minerality, the wine is exceptionally vibrant. Other wines worth looking for include Amity Vineyards’ Wedding Dance Riesling, Penner-Ash’s Willamette Valley Riesling, and Elk Cove’s Estate Riesling. All are refreshing and delicious, offering delicate notes of citrus fruits and apples. These four wines do have quite a bit of residual sugar, but they almost taste dry because they’re balanced by bracing acidity. Plus, they’re affordable. While these producers are known for their Pinot Noir -- many of which cost upwards of $50 per bottle -- these Rieslings can be found for right around $20. Riesling might be Oregon’s best kept secret. So make sure you try some before the word gets out.

Tall ship adventure for 26 orange county teenagers! Next Saturday sees the start of a nine day tall ship adventure for 26 Orange county teenagers! All of the youth are members of Mariners 936 sea scouts based in Dana Point Harbor. They will be sailing on The Spirit of Dana Point , a traditionally built, accurate replica of a 1770’s privateer used during the American Revolution, which is owned by the Ocean Institute. According to Jim “Skip” Wehan, leader of the Mariner program and Captain of the tall ship, this voyage is the highlight of the Mariner year. The itinerary includes visits to remote coves in the Channel Islands National Park on Santa Cruz and Anacapa Islands and brief stopovers in Santa Barbara Harbor and Catalina Island. Wehan reports that sailing a 118 foot replica from the early nineteenth century is a very unique experience requiring a great deal of teamwork. In addition, he points out, there are many fun activities for adventurous youth including hiking, kayaking and snorkeling on and around these spectacular islands . This awesome experience often results in bonding and formation of lifelong friendships. Participants prepare for the cruise year round with sail and maintenance training
on Saturdays as well as classroom instruction on Wednesday evenings. The youth will serve as crew members to man the sailing vessel under the supervision of a professional crew. The more experienced of the group will assume responsibilities as junior officers; emphasis on youth leadership is weaved into all Mariner activities. All cruise participants will be assigned to one of three crews serving around the clock watches led by youth officers. Some have spent as many as six years in the program, honing their maritime skills in preparation for their duties as officers, and in keeping with the Mariner motto “Where we go one, there we go all”, they will be expected to pass on their knowledge to the younger Mariners on board. For graduating seniors this may be their last Mariner adventure before starting college in the fall. Although most will continue sailing for recreation and fun, some will be heading to the Maritime Academy in
the fall with the intent of turning their love for the sea into a career. Based out of the County Facility known as the Sailing and Conference Center, Mariners is in it’s 35th year of operation providing ocean experience and training to the youth of Orange County. The program depends on the expertise of 40 adult volunteers and utilizes a fleet of vessels ranging from eight to thirty eight feet in length. Youth in two distinct programs learn
basic through advanced maritime skills in a club atmosphere that is largely youth led under adult supervision. The coed program for 12 and 13 year olds is known as Mariner Juniors while the program for youth ages 14 through high school is known as Mariners.
