EASY DO IT YOURSELF GIFTS FOR EVERYONE ON YOUR HOLIDAY LIST You want to find unique gifts for everyone on your list this holiday season. Rather than search endlessly, have you considered making your own presents? DIY gifting is a growing trend, providing people the opportunity to create the ideal present with loved ones’ personalities in mind. Because it’s homemade, it’s customizable and one of a kind, with deeper meaning than anything that can be purchased at a store. Whether you’re an amateur DIYer, an avid crafter or don’t consider yourself creative at all, you can make the perfect holiday gift guaranteed to impress everyone on your list. Here are five easy holiday DIY projects for inspiration: Canvas handprint art Handprint art is great if you want to involve kids in DIY gifting. This is a present that can be proudly given from the entire family and has loads of meaning for recipients like grandparents or aunts and uncles. First, get white canvases and acrylic paint from your local craft store. Then gather the kids and cover up clothing (acrylic paint is not washable) and decide what you want to create with their tiny handprints. From

green wreaths and holiday trees to thumbprint snowmen and snowflakes, options are endless to make a unique gift that perfectly freezes a moment in time through their hand impressions. Family ornaments DIY ornaments become cherished holiday decorations that are loved year after year. Stylish, classic and sentimental, ornaments featuring the silhouettes of your family are guaranteed to become keepsakes. Using the ultimate smart cutting machine, Cricut Maker, you can upload images of your children and family in Cricut Design Space, quickly create a design and then the machine seamlessly cuts the design from your choice of materials. A timeless black vinyl silhouette adhered to a natural wood round, both cut on Cricut Maker, is an elegant ornament. Or, get creative with a standalone silhouette design cut from black leather brushed with glitter. You can even use images of pets if you want to include fur-family members, too. Hot chocolate in a jar Tasty treats are plentiful during the holidays, but instead of going with the standard cookies, gift a beautiful mason jar filled with all the ingredients for decadent hot chocolate. Start

with a glass mason jar and fill about two-thirds full of hot chocolate mix. Then add in a few small layers of dry extras to customize the flavor, such as chocolate chips, crushed candy canes or peanut-butter chips. Finish with a layer of mini marshmallows and screw on the top. Add a bow and directions for making the hot chocolate and you have an adorable gift for anyone on your list. Custom t-shirts Does your mom have a fun nickname? Does your brother have a trademark greeting? Does your best friend adore the ‘80s? Pick up any type of plain shirt and get ready to make it spectacular with a few fun catch phrases or designs. Iron-on projects are an easy and fun way to make your gifts truly personal this holiday season. To make custom t-shirts, use the Cricut Maker to cut out your designs and the Cricut EasyPress 2 to get perfect iron-on results in 60 seconds or less. Not feeling a t-shirt? Consider customizing a canvas bag, hat, a special blanket or the sides of socks or a special blanket, if you want to try something different. All-in-one movie night in Give the gift of a wonderful night in by creating a movie gift basket

customized to your loved one’s personality. First, start with a big container that can hold all the goodies, such as a themed plastic popcorn bowl. Then choose a movie of special meaning, such as a beloved childhood film or one you watched together on a special occasion, like a first date. Include the movie and every treat you can imagine to complete movie night, from popcorn and classic theater boxed candy to comfy extras like a blanket or throw for staying cozy. With a little DIY ingenuity, some crafting materials and smart tools, you can make the ideal present for everyone on your list. Let your imagination soar and get creative during the most festive time of year. - (BPT)

HANDCRAFTED AMERICAN FURNITURE BUILT TO LAST Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you. That quote by Frank Lloyd Wright is ever so present in the work of Sean Woolsey Studio. Based in Costa Mesa, Sean Woolsey and his team design and meticulously craft handmade furniture built to last for generations. “Our pieces are purposefully designed to last generations , in contrast to a ”throw away” mass market approach. The core of what we do is informed by the beauty, structure, and simplicity in nature” Woolsey says. Growing up Woolsey was influenced by his father, a reputable stained glass artist building lamps and custom doors and windows for high profile clients all over the country. “My dad taught me a lot, and was a role model to me in many ways. “I grew up building skate ramps, then had a stint in the apprel industry (having his own 2 brands) then working for Hurley in Costa Mesa. I ultimately wanted to make things with my hands, built things with purpose and out of the best materials possible. Pieces that I would be proud to own myself.” Woolsey left the apparel industry and forged a new path in hand crafted furniture. Today Sean Woolsey Studio makes everything in southern California, from chairs and desks to pool tables and ping pong tables.

3 ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR TRAVELING WITH A PET DURING THE HOLIDAYS

The holidays mean different things to different people. Every family seems to have its own set of traditions, but one thing seems to be common among Americans during this time of year, and that’s traveling. Like Santa Claus making that long journey from the North Pole, it’s estimated that more than 90 million Americans (36 percent) will travel this holiday season, according to a recent survey conducted by Extended Stay America hotels and Kelton Global. Santa and his reindeer will hit the road during the 2017 holiday season - and he’s not alone, as nearly threequarters of Americans (69 percent) will do the same with their pets. “Pet parents are increasingly including their furry family members in their travel plans, especially during the holidays,” says pet expert Andrea

Page 4

Arden, who has over 20 years of experience in the industry. “In fact, our companion animals can be such a great source of comfort while we’re away from home, that some people can’t even conceive of a vacation without their dog or cat by their side.” To ensure you and your animal companion bring cheer wherever you go, Arden has provided three essential tips for traveling with a pet this holiday season. 1. Prepare your pet Like finding the perfect gift for your loved ones, the earlier you start to plan and prepare, the easier it will be. A great holiday vacation begins with a trip to the veterinarian to make sure your animal is in good health, has all the medications they might need (and perhaps some extras) and is up-to-date on vaccines. Along

The Newport News

with their physical health, you want to make sure your dog or cat is mentally prepared for a journey that may involve new places, new smells and new people. To get your four-legged friends ready for the adventure, bring your pet to unfamiliar places like a local park and have them interact with new faces. When you do this, be sure to bring plenty of treats to praise your pet and reinforce that these new experiences are positive and fun. 2. Avoid guilty faux paws Forty percent of traveling pet parents feel guilty about leaving their pets home during the holidays. That’s because pets are considered part of the family, and nearly onethird of Americans (27 percent) say pets should be included in all holiday festivities. Places like Extended Stay America can help alleviate some of the stress (and guilt) pet parents might feel during this time of year; the hotel’s more than 600 properties nationwide welcome pets year-round, so families don’t need to make the difficult decision of leaving their animal companion behind. To make things even easier this season, if you book before Dec. 31 at esa.com/ holiday, your pets stay free. Consider it a retreat from the holiday madness for you and your four-legged friend. In addition to helping pet owners stay connected with their animals, Extended Stay America offers all the comforts of home for guests. That’s important, since nearly half

(47 percent) of travelers this holiday season plan to be away from home for five days or more. With fully equipped kitchens in each room so guests can still contribute a dish to their family gathering; on-site laundry facilities to keep guests looking their holiday best; and free, in-room Wi-Fi, it’s easy to feel at home at Extended Stay America. 3. Practice good petiquette We know, sometimes it’s hard to believe that your lovable, furry friend could misbehave. When traveling to unfamiliar places, a calm, happy animal makes everyone else calm and happy, too. Here are some pointers to ensure your pets stay on the nice list this holiday: * Teach your cat or dog to rest calmly in a crate before you leave, so they have a familiar spot when traveling. * If driving, take frequent breaks to walk your dog or check in on your cat. * Bring along a chew toy that is filled with a little bit of food, as this serves as a great distraction for an anxious or bored animal. * Outside, keep your pet on a leash and walk them away from public areas like flowerbeds. And always remember to clean up after them! * Never leave your pet in a room alone, unless you are sure they will not disturb neighbors. If you must, leave the “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door, so housekeeping won’t startle them. - (BPT)

YOUR 2018 GUIDE TO EARTH-FRIENDLY HOLIDAY GIFTING Each year, many people count down the days to the holiday season and save their money for festive decorations and gift giving. In fact, the average American will spend over $1,000 on holiday gifts, according to the National Retail Federation. But before you start checking gifts off your list, consider going green this year. The best gifts not only have the latest features and styles, they also save energy and protect the environment. It’s a gift that gives back to your loved ones and the planet. Cutting-edge electronics Many of the latest models of your favorite gadgets have earned the ENERGY STAR label, meaning they are independently certified to save energy and money and protect the environment. You can find TVs, laptops, tablets, speakers, soundbars and more with this certification something for everyone on your list. Look for ENERGY STAR on electronics while you’re out holiday shopping. Advanced appliances Appliances might not be the most flashy or exciting gifts around, but if they are ENERGY STAR certified, they’re gifts that keep on giving. Certified appliances use less energy

and water, saving money on utility bills with every use. Treat your loved ones with the convenience of a new refrigerator, washer, dryer or dishwasher. Smart thermostat As temperatures drop, your heating bill is on the rise. For the average American household, almost half of the annual energy bill goes to heating and cooling - more than $900 a year. If you’re concerned about your energy usage this winter, an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat can help you stay warm without breaking the bank. And those energy savings add up to a greener planet. If everyone used an energy-efficient certified smart thermostat, savings would grow to 56 trillion BTUs of energy and $740 million per year, offsetting 13 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions. Modern lighting Candy and socks are common stocking stuffers, but how about something unique this year? Give your friends and family something they really need. ENERGY STAR certified LED light bulbs last over 13 years with typical use and save nearly $55 in electricity costs in that time. LED light bulbs are available in

warm to cool white light, so your gift can help set the mood in any room. You can also find energy-efficient light fixtures that come with LED light sources integrated right into their design that use up to 90 percent less energy. Creative wrapping paper Materials used to make gift wrapping paper are often not accepted for recycling, especially if it’s dyed, laminated or contains nonpaper additives like glitter or plastics. Get creative when wrapping presents this year with old fabric, maps, sheet music, magazines or newspapers. You can even use baking pans or

festive reusable tins. Do-good donation What do you get that friend or family member who has everything? That’s easy. Donate to a charity or service organization that they support in their name. For example, donate to a local organization that promotes environmental research or conservation. Your gift could also include a promise to volunteer with an organization. Follow this guide to green-up your holiday gifting. For more earth-friendly holiday gift ideas, visit energystar. gov/holiday. - (BPT)

DO IT YOURSELF HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY ‘Tis the season for baking and crafting - the perfect ways to feel festive and bond with loved ones of all ages. From trying new recipes to creating crafts that will be cherished for years to come, plan a date for some holiday fun and let the memorymaking with friends and family begin! These five festive projects will inspire laughter and good cheer while helping you mark the season with togetherness: PEEPS Snowy S’mores Classic s’mores get a holiday makeover with a tasty and adorable twist thanks to PEEPS(R) marshmallow and its fun seasonal shapes. Just follow the simple instructions and everyone will enjoy a delicious treat. Don’t forget to make a few extras to give away! See instructions below: Curated by Good Housekeeping magazine on behalf of PEEPS(R) Servings: 3 Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: less than 1 minute Ingredients 9 ct. pack of PEEPS(R) Marshmallow Snowmen 9 graham cracker squares 1 pack of mini candy canes 6 chocolate squares Directions 1. Turn on the oven broiler and place the oven rack in the center of the oven. Line a baking sheet with foil. 2. Break the graham cracker and the chocolate bars into squares. 3. Arrange six graham cracker Page 6

squares on the baking sheet and top each with a square of chocolate. Place a PEEPS(R) Marshmallow Snowman on top of each chocolate. 4. Place the tray in the oven for 35 seconds. Check to see how toasted the Snowmen are - they should be slightly puffed, looked melted around the sides, and begin to form a goldenbrown crust on top. If they don’t look melted enough, leave them in for another 5 to 10 seconds. Keep a very close eye on them and use extreme caution when broiling PEEPS(R) and pulling them out of the hot oven. 5. Remove the tray from the oven and immediately begin to build the PEEPS(R) Snowy S’mores by stacking two melted PEEPS(R) topped graham crackers. 6. Finish off with a clean graham cracker and top off with a PEEPS(R) Marshmallow Snowman. Adhere the Snowman to the top of the graham cracker with a dab of melted chocolate, and then adhere the candy cane to his hand with chocolate - to appear as if the Snowman is holding the candy cane. 7. Break up a candy cane and sprinkle bits to the melted chocolate and PEEPS(R) Marshmallow Snowman. 8. Make sure to enjoy while the treat is still warm! Gratitude tree The family tree gets a thoughtful update in this project that serves as a reminder of what matters most during

The Newport News

the holiday season. Use cardboard or poster board to cut out a tree trunk and branches to hang on the wall. Then cut out leaf shapes with construction paper and ask each person to write down what they are grateful for. Then share with each other before adhering the leaves on the branches to create a one-of-akind family tree. For a holiday theme, place an evergreen tree on the wall and decorate with paper ornaments with notations of gratitude instead. Hand-print wreath Every person is unique and so is the size and shape of their hand. Outline each person’s hand on green felt and cut out individually. Then use glue to adhere the hands together in a circle shape to create a wreath, adding in a few red circles for berries or a bow if you desire. Alternatively get a white canvas and green acrylic paint from the local craft store. Gather everyone and paint the palms and underside of fingers and press each family member’s hand firmly on the canvas to create various prints in a beautiful wreath shape. Cup of joy Want a simple project that is as much fun to create as it is to give? From neighbors and the mail-carrier to teachers and school friends, it’s easy to show you care when you create a treat that lets everyone enjoy a cup of joy. Simply get packets of classic hot chocolate and PEEPS(R) marshmallow in seasonal shapes

like gingerbread men, snowmen and holiday trees. Tie together with a bow and add a tag with a holiday greeting or fun saying like, “You’re our favorite ‘PEEP’le, thanks for being great neighbors!” Salt-dough ornaments Kids love to play with clay, so they certainly will enjoy creating saltdough ornaments. All you need is flour, salt and water to get started. Look up “salt dough ornament recipe” on the internet and you’ll find quick and easy recipes. Traditionally, you’ll roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters before baking and painting. You can also make three-dimensional ornaments like snowmen or people, too. Get creative by using household utensils like a garlic press to create hair or beards. Spending time with loved ones is the best part of the holidays. Let these five DIY activities inspire your friends and family to get together and feel the joy of the season. - (BPT)

5 WAYS TO SIMPLIFY YOUR HOLIDAY DECORATING It’s here, the season of go, go, go. The time of year when there is so much to do, especially if you’re hosting holiday festivities. You want everything to be magical and so you’re planning events, buying presents, making plans for where everyone is going to sleep and all while working a full-time job and taking care of your family. It’s a whirlwind but you wouldn’t have it any other way. Now you just have to find time to decorate. With so much to do and so little time, you’re naturally looking for ways to make the holidays special without too much effort. This can be true of your decorating as well. Instead of decorating lighter, opt for easier with the tips below. Each one

is guaranteed to help fill your home with the holiday spirit, all without a big time commitment on your part. * Add a little color to your home. In the summer colorful flowers can make any room welcoming, but in the winter your options for foliage are ... limited. Don’t fret or forgo the opportunity to add some natural accents to your home. Evergreen sprigs added to vases can bring a flora component to any room and infuse a seasonal dash of color. Holly is a great addition because it produces berries for a perfect pop of red. Place these in the same areas you would summer flowers and you’ll love the seasonal effect they create. * Photo-friendly options. Family photos are a mainstay in any home and this season is the perfect time to take your photo displays up a notch. Free-standing photo panels - available at CVS - provide a new and exciting way to showcase your favorite family moments. Available to order at cvs.com/photo, they offer a unique and easy way to bring these images to life. * Let there be light. Stringing

holiday lights around the outside of your home is an annual tradition, but why not do the same thing indoors as well? String lights through the main entertaining areas of your home using insulated holders, just be sure to check the wires for fraying before you do. This is a great way to add a festive spirit to a large area, and because so many lights run on batteries and can be equipped with timers, it’s easier than ever to conserve energy while showing your holiday spirit. * Décor panels add a festive feel to your space. What do the holidays mean to you? Whatever it is, display it on a customizable décor panel from Kodak Moments, also available at CVS. Choose from a wide array of designs and once you find one you love, your décor panels can be personalized with text as well. Matching the perfect message with the perfect design will give you an accent piece you’ll want to keep up in your house all year long. * Put those extra ornaments to use. Whether you’re taking a minimalist approach to your tree this year or you simply have too many ornaments,

there’s no reason to leave the extras in the box. Unwrap them and place them in bowls or on serving dishes and surround them with pine cones or pine branches. Then place them around your home as a festive accent. This decoration idea also makes for the perfect holiday centerpiece and is an easy way to deliver seasonal pops of style wherever your guests congregate. Start your planning today The holidays are fast approaching and as they do, your time is running short. Optimizing your decorating with the tips above will keep your home looking fresh and festive without a lot of effort, and that’s something that will bring you peace and joy this holiday season. - (BPT)

HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS TO SAVE MONEY AND REDUCE STRESS Lines, crowds and stress - if that describes your holiday shopping experience, you’re doing it all wrong. The cost of gifts and decorations can add up quickly, but there are plenty of ways to reduce the dent in your wallet. Here are six money- and timesaving tips from The Home Depot to minimize your shopping stress and get the most out of holiday sales: Make a gift list From your nearest and dearest to coworkers and teachers, write down everyone you need to shop for and assign a dollar amount next to each name. Online gift guides, like The Home Depot’s Holiday Gift Center, make it simple, with gift ideas categorized by price point. This will help you stay organized and setting price limits will keep your budget on track. Review the deals Collect all the ads from your favorite stores and use them to create your shopping plan of attack. When the day comes, get to the store early for the best selection and savings. At The Home Depot, these ads are also located on the online home page, and many items are also available for instore pick up or delivery. The Home Depot has many holiday

deals, which kick off on Black Friday, including Special Buys on power tools and accessories from Milwaukee, Makita, Ryobi, Ridgid and DeWalt; Mechanics Tools Sets and Storage from Husky; Smart Home products from Google and Nest; among others. Check online for your local store for hours and availability. Don’t procrastinate The easiest way to overspend on holiday gifts is to wait until the last minute. Shopping at the latest possible moment adds unnecessary stress. For the people on your gift list who are impossible to buy for, a Home Depot gift card is a favorite that’s sure to get a smile. With so many tools to help you shop, you can get your shopping done quickly and spend more time with family and friends. Follow brands on social media Check out your favorite brands on social media, where you can likely find up-to-the-minute info on savings right in your news feed. Many companies post special promotions, news and last-minute sale announcements every day, especially during the holidays. The Home Depot keeps its deals updated daily online, including up to 40 percent off select power tools and accessories and up to 40 percent

off appliance special buys. Shop savvy with your smartphone Before you head back for seconds of Grandma’s desserts, finish your wish list. Mobile apps, like Home Depot’s mobile shopping app, make it easy to search for your favorite items. If you find a gift in store that breaks your budget, use your phone to search for a better price elsewhere. Some stores will price match if you show them another retailer selling the same product at a lower rate. Don’t overlook shipping costs An online item might seem like a

steal compared to the in-store version - until you see the shipping charge. Remember to take note of any extra delivery or service fees, as well. Many retailers offer free, fast delivery on many items; for example, The Home Depot will offer free shipping on all Christmas décor and live trees this holiday season. Follow these tips to accomplish all your holiday shopping goals and get back to enjoying the season with loved ones. For more tips, visit homedepot.com - (BPT)

Newport Properties Australian Auction Process Hits US Real Estate Market Have you noticed the number of Auctions going on in Southern California lately? If you didn’t know any better, you might think we are back in 2008. But if you look closer, you’ll realize it’s different; the properties going to Auction are non-distressed. In the last 24 months, Harcourts has managed to create curiosity and excitement about a unique selling process that is empowering both buyer and seller alike. Harcourts, one of the largest real estate franchises in the world with offices in 10 different countries, has been refining residential real estate auctions for nearly 130 years.

“Our process doesn’t replace traditional sales, it simply enhances them by providing owners another option for selling their property,” says Director of Harcourts Auctions Ben Brady. For decades in the USA, the auction process has been associated with foreclosures and distressed properties. During that same period most realtors could only provide one option for helping their clients sell their homes. Our Aussie friends saw this as an opportunity when they brought Harcourts as well as the Harcourts Auction Platform to the USA.

How is it different than other auction platforms in the USA? 1. No buyer premium. 2. Don't have to wait for the auction date to offer on the home. More than 57%, sell prior to the live auction date. 3. Fully disclosed process: all reports, disclosures, inspections, termite report, request for repairs, etc. are done upfront increasing the success of closing to 90% vs. 70% as seen in traditional sales. 4. Fully financeable just like a traditional sale. 5. Attractive process for all buyers, especially owner occupiers. IN THE LAST 12 MONTHS TOTAL PROPERTIES LISTED PROPERTIES SOLD AVERAGE DAYS ON MARKET

DAOU A BEACON OF FINE WINE IN PASO ROBLES

Considered the birthplace of modern winemaking and an amazing terroir for producing Cabernet Sauvignon, 2,300 foot DAOU Mountain stands tall in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles. Off to the west of the 101, in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles, about a half day journey or so on the road from north San Diego, stands a solitary mountain of some 2,300 feet, producing magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon. Everything about this mountain is so right for the highest quality Cabernet. When the brother team of Georges and Daniel Daou staked their claim after growing up in France with a love of wine, then achieving great success in America in academics and in the tech world, the dream of DAOU Mountain turned into the discovery of a lifetime. It did not come quickly. As a matter of fact, when the decision was made to pursue their vision of making the best Bordeaux French style wines in the world, it took them 8 years to find this location. 12 years ago, DAOU Mountain was named and planting began at the pinnacle of what would become the largest wine country in California, Paso Robles. “It was wild country then and we struggled to quickly put up a single building to start making wine,” Daniel Daou told me. “We were just 14 miles from the ocean and you could feel it. The calcareous lime soil had a very similar make up to what makes Bordeaux vineyards thrive. Our wines have lots of minerality and natural acidity. Over time, wine experts have applauded our efforts and now expect us to make great Cabernet Sauvignon. The American dream is still alive. We have challenged ourselves to produce wines that will rival the greatest. There is no question that we have the terroir. This

terrior is naturally inclined to produce wines of extraordinary staying power. We spare no amount of imagination or technology in harnessing that power to make wines of dimension and elegance.”

JOYFUL CHILD FOUNDATION GALA RAISES NEARLY $100,000.00 P h o t o s b y D r e w Wy m a n a n d M i c h e l l e P e r a l e s The Joyful Child Foundation’s California coastal-themed fundraiser gala at the Fashion Island Hotel in Newport Beach was an elegant affair that generated nearly $100,000 to support the organization’s BRAVE Initiative. Through the BRAVE Initiative, The Joyful Child empowers children and teens, ages 5-18, how to protect themselves and stop violence through self-advocacy, verbal and practical defense techniques, and resiliency skills. A special highlight of the evening featured unveiling the breathtaking painting created by the formally trained and very talented Parisian artist, Laurent Dareau. The painting, which Dareau commissioned specifically for the event, revealed a stunningly joyful depiction of young Samantha Runnion, in whose memory The Joyful Child was established. Founding Director, Erin Runnion, announced that the masterpiece would serve as the focal point for the new Champions for Children Wall at The Joyful Child’s Headquarters, in Irvine. This wall will feature the names of inaugural donors to the newly established Samantha’s Legacy Fund, honoring their support for The Joyful Child’s national movement for child protection and prevention education. Laura Diaz, the 14-time Emmy Award winning and three-time Imagen Award winning Fox11 news anchor and reporter who has been a longtime friend to The Joyful Child, Emcee’d the event with finesse and poise, while framing the context for The Joyful Child’s mission and call to action. Ms. Diaz also introduced a short video of the up-and-coming Eliana Sweet, current president of a local high school BRAVE Club who produced a short film titled “The Joyful Child – Erin Runnion’s Story.” Ms. Sweet’s full-length video was nominated for Best Spot Feature at The Orange County Film Festival. Erin Runnion herself delivered a powerful message, applauding all in attendance for being champions for children, celebrating the victories of the past year through collaboration with a myriad of community partner agencies, and emphasizing the urgent need to “do what needs to be done to stop the cycle of violence so that we can protect every child, whether it be within their schools, communities, or families.” The Joyful Child annually honors a community partner whose work has gone above and beyond to expand the BRAVE Initiative into their communities. This year was no exception, as Ms. Gloria Huerta and the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department each received a stunning crystal Champions for Children award for their consistent and steadfast work teaching BRAVE to children in the Inland Empire. As a community united for child protection, they have empowered over 1,000 children with knowledge and skills to keep themselves safe from abduction, abuse, and exploitation. The gala’s Co-Chairs Darryl Tallon and Debbie Nguyen orchestrated the details of the evening, including the cocktail reception with silent auction and the sit-down dinner, down to the details of the gorgeous coastal-glam-inspired centerpieces designed by Julie Khuu Interior Design, which one lucky guest from each table had the privilege to take home. Zack Krone of California Coastal Auctions provided lively, jovial entertainment for the fundraising activities, including auction packages and opportunities for travel to places near and far, from as close to home as Pelican Hill in Newport Beach, to Key Largo, Florida and even the Caribbean island of Antigua. This event was an elegant and joyful evening to celebrate this important work for child protection! Since 2002, The Joyful Child Foundation has been dedicated to preventing crimes against children through programs that educate, empower, and unite families and communities. The BRAVE Initiative provides empowering, interactive life skills lessons for children in grades K-12 with the help of teachers, community partner agencies, and law enforcement, as well as through parent education opportunities. The goal is to bring these lifesaving programs to every child and family to reduce the risk of childhood victimization, including providing low-cost and free training opportunities for children in very low-income, homeless and transitional living situations. ASSEMBLE A HOLIDAY CHEESEBOARD GUARANTEED TO IMPRESS

‘Tis the season for getting together with friends and family to celebrate. Food is at the heart of the holidays, so whether you’re hosting an event or attending as a guest, you’ll want to whip up something to impress a wide variety of taste buds. The perfect solution: A holiday cheeseboard. Creating a cheeseboard like the ones you see in food magazines might seem intimidating, but it’s actually surprisingly simple. With a little planning and a few flairs, you’ll put together a cheeseboard

that guests will nosh on until every last crumb is devoured. Just follow these five steps to a delicious holiday cheeseboard that’s guaranteed to get rave reviews. 1. Select a serving tray: A wood cutting board is timeless, but feel free to get creative with your serving vessel. You can choose your grandmother’s crystal platter, that festive holiday tray or repurpose a favorite cake plate. The only rule is the tray must be large enough to hold all your cheese plus accompaniments

without being overcrowded. 2. Choose cheese wisely: Select three to five varieties of cheese for your board. This provides nice variation without overwhelming guests with too many options. When in doubt, remember this rhyme when shopping: Something old, something new, something stinky and something blue. Consider an Italian cheese theme and choose from a variety of Stella cheeses. From fresh mozzarella and tart feta to aged Asiago and buttery Fontina, you’ll have nice variety for everyone. 3. Get the right amounts: You want enough cheese to satisfy everyone but you don’t wants loads of leftovers. Typically 4-6 ounces of cheese per person is a good estimate, but increase or decrease that amount based on time of day and other foods being served (for example, a bountiful luncheon versus a light cocktail hour). The Stella Cheese online cheese calculator can help you determine appropriate amounts considering these variables if you need assistance. 4. Add accompaniments and garnishes: For a well-rounded cheeseboard, extras are essential. Crackers, crostini and bread as well as nuts, dried fruit, olives and meats can be customized to your tastes. For

a festive take on your cheeseboard, add quintessential holiday-themed foods such as cranberry jam, roasted chestnuts, fresh figs and even pumpkin butter. For pops of color, add in fresh berries and sprigs of rosemary. These extras not only add a plethora of flavors, but they beautify your presentation. 5. Consider proper preparation: One of the best parts of a cheeseboard is it can be prepared ahead of time. This means less work and more time to spend with loved ones during holiday events. To get started, organize your cheeseboard in an eye-appealing manner with cheeses from mildest to strongest flavor as that’s the best way to sample them. Keep in mind you can set cheese out about an hour before serving as this time allows cheese to adjust to room temperature which maximizes flavors. Then add extras to fill in the spaces on the board, placing garnishes like jams and honey in the middle. Whether you’re hosting a casual neighborhood gathering, a festive celebration with family or a formal get-together with business partners, a delectable cheeseboard is ideal for guests to nosh on. HOW CONSUMERS CAN MAKE THE MOST OF THEIR MONEY, STRESS LESS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

The arrival of the holidays brings with it a whole host of considerations and things to do. According to a recent survey by Chase, eight in 10 Americans say they have holiday stress. Whether you’re out to find the perfect gift, or just entertain the kids as school winds down, the common denominator is the holiday season sees Americans strapped for time and spending more money than at other times of the year. With all the season’s craziness, it can be easy to let important to-do’s slip through the cracks. With proper planning, and a credit card provider that has your back, options abound for making sound decisions even in the face of increased spending. Chase is there to make sure you have one less thing to stress about when holiday crunch time hits. Chase offers consumers options for saving money throughout the holiday season. Chase Financial Education Ambassador Farnoosh Torabi says money-conscious consumers can shop smarter, offering tips that consumers can keep in mind while they’re in-store. “If you pay with Chase, there is one less thing to worry about when you’re shopping and gifting this holiday season,” Torabi said. “Chase has made it easier and quicker to redeem your points for gifts, keep track of

your cards and ensure a safe, secure check-out experience.” As many Americans look for deals and coupons after Thanksgiving, Chase provides customers convenient ways to save money right on their phones. “Before you even get to the store, gear up for great deals with Chase Offers,” Torabi said. “When you log into your Chase Mobile app, you can select offers from top retailers, add them to your card, and automatically get a credit when you shop in the store - no coupons or vouchers needed!” Recent findings also show that more than half of Americans say they are gift card givers when under pressure. In that event, shoppers should keep in mind that there are several opportunities to make the most of your money by redeeming credit card rewards. “If you earn points through Ultimate Rewards, you have a lot of flexibility to use them for gifting,” Torabi said. “Through the Ultimate Rewards site, you can get a gift card to popular merchants, use them to purchase Apple products, and even use them at checkout when you use the Chase Pay mobile wallet.” Money isn’t the only concern of Americans during the holiday season - there’s time, too. As the

holidays wind up and the frenetic pace of family and fun begins to set in, Americans begin looking for ways to save time so they can enjoy the things that mean the most. In fact, one-third of Americans (34 percent) say that the holidays can leave them strapped for time so they use points to get gift cards for family and friends. “Shoppers should also keep the Chase Pay app in mind,” Torabi said. “Imagine you’re out shopping for holiday gifts and your hands are full of everything from toys to wrapping paper - and even your kids! Instead of rummaging through your bag to find your wallet, the Chase Pay app

allows you to pay with your phone.” Between the office parties, family and friend get-togethers and rushing to stores for last-minute gifts, you may wind up forgetting something. If you leave your card behind or misplace it, Chase credit cards now have a lock/ unlock feature. From your phone or computer, you can instantly block new purchases, cash advances and balance transfers the moment your card isn’t in your wallet. Check out chase.com to learn more. And if you want to check out Chase Offers, go to chase.com/ chaseoffers. - (BPT)

LUXURY ENTERTAINING FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The holidays usher in a sense of celebration and opportunities for lavish seasonal gatherings. Awardwinning Chef Michael Voltaggio knows how to create an experience that will not only entertain, but also thoroughly impress. When it comes to holiday hosting, Michael integrates seasonal ingredients and offers finishing touches that will leave a luxurious, lasting impression. Experiential considerations Take a holistic perspective and use expert forethought when planning a festive dinner party. Similar to designing a new restaurant, Michael sees a night of entertaining as an opportunity to create a comprehensive dining experience. At the start of the event, greet guests with a cocktail topped with fragrant garnish, and introduce attendees to a curated evening with unexpected details, such as a passed amuse-bouche atop a slate serving platter. Consider ambiance from every angle - choose classical music for formal affairs or upbeat jazz for an evening of seasonal glamour and complement a crackling fireplace with tabletop candlelight to set the tone. Entertaining essentials Every touchpoint of an event should exude the same level of luxury, from the carefully chosen linens to the culinary tools used to prepare the menu. For Michael, this is especially true of kitchen faucets. Whether it’s the main fixture, a pot filler or a prep faucet, these are his essential tools for the entire entertaining process. The Artesso SmartTouch Pull-Down Prep Page 16

Faucet by Brizo offers visual intrigue in a newly expanded Brilliance Luxe Gold finish, bringing a gilded warmth to the space and offering intuitive touch technology - perfect for event preparation. Lavish pairings From hors d’oeuvres to after-dinner aperitifs, pay acute attention to detail and establish pairings that will create an evening of opulence. Offer elevated ambiance and refinement for the table by placing candlesticks of

various heights to accent bone china and complete the tablescape with a faceted decanter and glassware to enhance the overall aesthetic. Take cues from Michael, who enjoys selecting thoughtful wine pairings with seasonal dishes, such as a butternut squash soup complemented by the flavors of a robust Chianti. Culminating provisions When choosing courses for a dinner party, tell a story with each plate, adding finishing touches that will set

the menu apart. To Michael, cooking and entertaining are opportunities for creative exploration. Ornament an autumnal risotto with shaved truffle to bring rich depth of flavor or infuse a wintry dessert with liquid nitrogen for an unexpected dining experience. Continue to surprise and delight guests with personalized, calligraphed place cards, and end the evening with brushed gold champagne flutes for a group toast that will leave a lasting impression until next season. - (BPT)

SEGERSTROM CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND ATTILA GLATZ CONCERT PRODUCTIONS PRESENT SALUTE TO VIENNA NEW YEAR’S CONCERT Photo by Chris Lee Usher in the New Year with the dazzling spectacle of Salute to Vienna New Year’s Concert at Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 8 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. This concert, celebrating 24 years of bringing romance and OldWorld elegance to North America, is a crystalline moment of timeless beauty. Inspired by the annual Viennese “Neujahrskonzert,” this frothy celebration blends acclaimed European singers and dancers with a full orchestra in a fresh new program. Step into Vienna’s Golden Age and spend the evening caught up in the joy, grandeur and music of a time past but not forgotten. Join Viennese conductor Matthias Fletzberger and The Strauss Symphony of America, who will perform with Viennese soprano Monika Rebholz and tenor Alexandru Badea, as well as members of the National Ballet of Hungary and International Champion Ballroom Dancers. Audiences young and old will be carried away by the first notes of the eternal Blue Danube Waltz. Single tickets start at $49 and are available online at SCFTA.org, at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa or by calling (714) 5562787. For inquiries about group ticket savings for 10 or more, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. Segerstrom Center for the Arts applauds its corporate partners including Kia Motors America, Official Automotive Partner; and United Airlines, Official Airline. About Attila Glatz Concert Productions Attila Glatz Concert Productions produces, promotes, and manages classical, jazz, folk, country, movie, and video game music performances worldwide. Other company highlights include the North American tours of the Vienna Mozart Orchestra, and KlangVerwaltung Orchestra, as well as a cinematic concert series with films including H a r r y P o t t e r , E . T. T h e Extraterrestrial, Amadeus, and The Godfather. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is an acclaimed arts institution as well as a beautiful multi-disciplinary cultural campus. It is committed to supporting artistic excellence, offering unsurpassed experiences and to

engaging the entire community in new and exciting ways through the unique power of live performance and a diverse array of inspiring artsbased education and community engagement programs. Previously called the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Segerstrom Center is Orange County’s largest non-profit arts organization. In addition to its six performance venues, Segerstrom Center is also home to the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School. The Center presents a broad range of programming for audiences of all ages, including international ballet and dance, national tours of top Broadway shows, jazz and cabaret, contemporary artists, classical music performed by renowned chamber orchestras and ensembles,

family-friendly programming, free performances open to the public from outdoor movie screenings to dancing on the plaza and many other special events. Segerstrom Center is a leader among the nation’s performing arts centers for providing education programs designed to inspire young people through the arts. The Center’s programs reach hundreds of thousands of students each year in five Southern California counties. Community engagement programs developed through the Center for Dance and Innovation and Center Without Boundaries also connect the Center more comprehensively with Orange County’s many diverse communities. The CDI supports flagship artistic programming and a wide range of projects that celebrate innovation, nurture creativity and engage audiences of the future. It is home to the ABT Gillespie School and the School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities. The Center Without Boundaries develops partnerships with noncultural organizations to help them in their own efforts to respond to the ever-changing needs of the community. Segerstrom Center for the Arts is also proud to serve as the artistic home to three of the region’s major performing arts organizations: Pacific Symphony, Philharmonic Society of Orange County and Pacific Chorale, who contribute greatly to the artistic life of the region with annual seasons performed at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. In addition to Segerstrom Center for the Arts as a presenting and producing institution, it also identifies the beautiful 14-acre campus that embraces the Center’s own facilities as well as two independently acclaimed organizations: Tony Award®-winning South Coast Repertory and a site designated as the future home of the Orange County Museum of Art.
