One of Orange County’s most enjoyable summer music events, this year’s Baroque Music Festival will feature an all star line up of Baroque musicians and singers dedicated to the era’s preeminent composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. World renowned Baroque violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock serves as the festival’s artistic director, bringing her eloquent performing talents as well as her passion for Baroque music. Known for her insightful commentary during the concerts, she also provides astute program notes that add rich context to the experience. Now in her fifth year as artistic d i r e c t o r, B l u m e n s t o c k h a s programmed this season’s “Bach Fest” with both familiar and little known works. Most pieces are performed on period instruments or authentic reproductions in three intimate venues, similar to the concert environments of the Baroque era. Blumenstock, who plays a 17th century Guarneri violin, will be joined by soloists Kathryn Adduci on trumpet, Judith Linsenberg on recorder, Christopher Matthews on flute, Kathryn Montoya on oboe, Ian Pritchard on the organ and harpsichord, and other guest artists. Vocal soloists and the Festival Orchestra will round out the ensemble. The festival continues its tradition of inviting concertgoers to arrive early for each performance to enjoy Baroque music performed al fresco by the South Coast Brass, beginning 45 minutes before curtain time. Another festival custom features a reception after each performance,

Festival Quick Facts: BAROQUE MUSIC FESTIVAL, CORONA DEL MAR Started in 1981 by California State University, Fullerton music professor Burton Karson and art historian Irmeli Desenberg, the Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar has become an Orange County cultural institution. Acclaimed instrumentalists and vocal soloists come together for the annual festival, performing primarily on period instruments in intimate settings for five concerts offered over an eight day period in June. Concertgoers have described the performances as “rapturous” and “riveting”; music reviewers from the Los Angeles Times, Orange County Register and other local publications have consistently given them glowing reviews. The Festival’s all volunteer Board of Directors is committed to bringing high quality Baroque music to Corona del Mar every summer. ARTI S TI C D IRE C TOR ELIZABETH BLUMENSTOCK

Baroque violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock is widely admired as an artist of compelling verve and eloquence, and her technical sparkle and enthusiasm bring an infectious passion to the Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar. Since 1981, she has assumed the roles of soloist, concertmaster and leader with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. She has also performed throughout the U.S. and abroad, with the Boston and Berkeley Early Music Festivals, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and the Finnish Oulunsalo Soi Festival, among others. Her love of chamber music has involved her in California’s finest periodinstrument ensembles, including Musica Pacifica, Live Oak Baroque and the Galax Quartet. She is a regular concertmaster with American Bach Soloists, the Goettingen Handel Festspielorchester and Il Complesso Barocco orchestra, recording over 100 CDs with these ensembles, and serves as an adjunct faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Her 1660 Andrea Guarneri violin is on loan from the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Period Instrument Trust. TICKETS A five concert Festival subscription is $275, assuring premium priority seating and a private post concert dinner with the musicians in the Fellowship Hall of St. Mark Presbyterian Church after the final performance. As one subscriber remarked, “The concerts alone were well worth the cost, but dining with the artists was priceless!” Single tickets are $30 for Monday night, $45 each for Wednesday and Friday nights, and $40 each for the Sunday afternoons. Festival subscriptions as well as single tickets may be ordered from the Festival website, www.bmf-cdm.org, or by calling (949) 760-7887.

3 expert tips for starting a successful vegetable garden Warm weather begs green thumbs across the country to break out their gardening gloves and till the soil for the season’s plantings. Whether this is your first year tending a home garden or it’s something you’ve been doing for decades, gardening offers many rewards, including time spent outdoors, the ability to feel closer to Mother Nature, and of course, the fresh fare plucked just steps from your kitchen. Anyone can have a successful home garden no matter where they live by following a few steps from professional gardeners. Consider these three important tips for starting your garden right so you can enjoy fresh produce faster, thanks to the experts at Outdoor Essentials makers of garden beds, compost bins and other gardening necessities. Step 1: Research appropriate early plantings Springtime is ideal garden time thanks to milder weather, and a good place to start is by researching proper plants for your region’s early season. If you have questions, consult your local nursery or call your local extension office for specialized advice. In general, good early plantings include brassicas, a family of plants that includes kale, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbages. Additional cool-season crops to consider include radishes, beets, peas, potatoes and carrots. These plants will thrive early in the season and produce yields quickly. In addition to quick-producing plants, the early season is the best time to plant other varieties that take a long time to mature. Onions, for example, require a lengthy growing season and should be planted early so that in late summer, gardeners can enjoy the maximum yield possible. Want produce quicker? Consider purchasing starter plants, also called

plant starts, rather than relying on packets of seeds. These are the small plants that have already germinated and have a basic root system. These are easy to transfer to your own garden and, with proper tending, will grow quickly and produce fruit faster. Step 2: Prepare garden spaces for accelerated growth After months of not being used, your garden’s soil is likely compact and will require some tilling to loosen the dirt and encourage plant growth. You can do this with a garden rake; for large gardens, some people prefer to rent a power tiller. People who live in smaller homes, a townhouse or condo might prefer to use raised garden beds. Stylish and functional, raised garden planters from Outdoor Essentials eliminate the need to bend over to tend garden, a benefit that has made them vastly popular. Raised garden beds can be used virtually anywhere outdoors, including on a deck or patio, and they can be moved, too, if necessary. Whether you create a garden plot in your yard or add a few raisedgarden planters to your patio, make sure the dirt is nutrient-rich and ready for your plants. Typically it’s wise to mix black dirt in with your soil to ensure that plants grow strong. If you’ve had trouble growing in the past, consider getting your soil tested to verify pH levels.

Step 3: Tend daily and enjoy the fruits of your labor For best results, tend your garden on a daily basis. Check for soil moisture and water as necessary. Make sure to pluck weeds and watch for pest infestations. If done daily, it should only take a few minutes to verify the health of your garden, plus it’s fun to watch plants grow and flower. As fruit and vegetables mature, it’s time to enjoy the season’s first harvest. The healthy fresh fare tastes even better knowing you grew it yourself, plus it cuts down on grocery bills. If you find you have too much of one type of produce at once, share with neighbors, coworkers and friends - everyone loves fresh garden delights. Keep in mind that as plants grow, you need to make sure they don’t overcrowd each other. This can limit growth and yield production. If your garden starts to look overgrown, you may need to pluck out a few plants to open up space and encourage proper growth and healthy root systems. Spring to it! The mild, moist weather and longer days of the early gardening season make the conditions ideal for plant growth. With a few simple steps and a watchful eye, you’ll be enjoying fresh produce at almost every meal.

From floor to fixtures: Top spring home decor trends add style and personality Spring is in the air and summer is right around the corner, which means it’s time to refresh your indoor spaces to reflect the energy and optimism of the season. The top home decor trends of spring 2015 take a fresh approach to traditional design elements to create an aesthetic that is fresh and full of life. Best yet, the trends are easily accessible, so anyone can update their space with a few simple tips. Carpet More homeowners are seeking the beauty, comfort and safety that carpet provides, making it a top flooring trend for spring 2015 and beyond. What types of carpet are popular? “New soft fibers,” says Vickie Gilstrap, director of design services for The Dixie Group, a top U.S. carpet manufacturer. “Consumers went away from wall-to-wall carpet, as hard surface flooring gained in popularity. Then, people began to miss the softness and warmth

of carpet. Carpet absorbs sound, making homes quieter, and traps dust at the base of the carpet fibers so that dust doesn’t circulate in the room air.- The soft fibers give us a reason to put carpet down again.” She is also seeing increased interest in “mixed-media” carpet styles - with hi-lustre and low-lustre yarns used in the same carpet. Additionally, patterns are being featured on top of texture, giving a multi-dimensional appearance to flooring. Not only stylish, carpet is healthy, too. People with allergies or other sensitivities can choose carpet as a way to improve indoor air quality. A recent study supports previous findings that carpet, when effectively cleaned, traps allergens and other particles, resulting in less dust, dander and airborne contaminants escaping into the air. For more information, visit the Carpet and Rug Institute at www.carpet-rug.org. Color Thoughtful use of color in home design is a top trend for 2015. “Colors are getting warmer,” notes Gilstrap. “Taupe is the bridge color taking us from gray to browner tones. Warm pinks are returning, as well as warmer greens like moss and olive - even apple.” Keep in mind adding personality to a space through use of warm

color doesn’t necessarily require a complete interior overhaul. Consider incorporating spring colors using accent pieces. It’s easy to switch up pillows, throws or artwork without investing a lot of time or money. Plus it’s a fun way to update the personality of your favorite spaces every season. Texture and pattern This spring, more homeowners are using textures and patterns to make a visual statement through design. Strategic use of texture and patterns can highlight certain interior spaces, manipulate the light within the room and influence scale. Blending both adds visual interest and helps homeowners create a unique space to call their own. “Layering of pattern and texture - in floors, walls, upholstery, window treatments - gives a more individualized feel,” says Gilstrap. Scared of mixing patterns and textures? She suggests placing patterns on stairs or in hallways. If big and bold patterns aren’t your taste, consider sticking to small, neutral patterns that can be a subtle way to add visual interest and design complexity to interior spaces. Lighting Lighting plays an important twopronged role: it makes a space functional and also helps define its design aesthetic. Adjusting the task

lighting within a room can instantly make the space more livable and highlight the design motif. Another easy lighting update is purchasing new lamps or simply adding new shades to existing lamps - a great way to refresh a space with minimal cost. Keep in mind, when selecting fixtures, there’s no longer a need to avoid gold tones. “Gold is coming back- we are seeing more gold and copper and less silver,” says Gilstrap. Want to really redefine your home’s lighting? Ornamental lighting is big this year with designers thinking outside the box when it comes to how and where these fixtures can be used. For example, dramatic chandeliers are no longer reserved for formal spaces such as the dining room or foyer. This spring, you can add a touch of elegance to any space by adding a stylish chandelier, plus it doesn’t take up much design real estate space. Bedrooms, basements and bars are just a few unique areas where chandeliers can be featured.

Eight ways to get the most out of your trip to the farmers market When spring arrives, leaves, flowers and robins aren’t the only signs of warm weather to reappear. Spring also heralds the return of farmers markets. A trip to the market is a great opportunity to indulge in fresh healthy produce and to expand your horizons by trying new items or preparing them in different ways. Here are eight tips to make the most of your visit to the local farmers market: * Note the hours and dates of your local market on your calendar. Set reminders on your smartphone that will alert you when favorite items such as tomatoes, peas, beans and strawberries come into season. * Prepare your refrigerator and kitchen for the season’s harvest. Clean out your fridge’s produce drawer, and stock up on items that complement fresh produce, such as salad dressings and seasonings that can be used to turn basic veggies into delicious meals. Make sure to choose organic options, such as Simply Organic’s Greek Yogurt Dips (great for broccoli and cauliflower florets). * While farmers market vendors will almost certainly have plastic bags on hand, take your own reusable bags or baskets to carry your purchase - they’re better for Mother Nature. If you’ll be buying

perishable items, consider packing a cooler as well. Remember to place heavier items (like melons) on the bottom of the bag and lighter ones (such as berries) on top. * You’ll find the freshest produce and best selection early in the day. Setting your alarm to wake you a bit early could ensure you get the pick of the day’s produce. * Leave the $20 and $50 bills at home. Smaller bills will provide you with greater buying flexibility, and vendors will appreciate the change. * Scope out the entire market before you begin making purchases. Certain popular items, such as tomatoes, cantaloupe, melons, peas and potatoes will be available from multiple vendors. Strolling through the market first will allow you to compare prices and taste samples to ensure you’re picking the best and most delicious buys for your family. * Unpack bags as soon as you’re home and store each item appropriately. Create a menu plan for the week that incorporates everything you’ve purchased to help ensure nothing goes to waste. Don’t forget to incorporate snacks into your meal plan. * Every week, try something new. By all means, enjoy your familiar favorites, but also add in new items like kohlrabi, chard or broccolini.

Not sure how to prepare something new? Seasonings are a great way to add flavor without fat. Spice-filled marinades or rubs are a perfect complement to produce. Throw your veggies on the grill to bring out the freshness. On its website, www. simplyorganic.com, Simply Organic offers numerous flavorful fresh produce recipes. Here’s a tasty recipe to try on your grill today: Adobo Grilled Asparagus Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 8 to 10 minutes Total time: 15 minutes Servings: 4 to 6 Ingredients: Use organic ingredients where possible. 2 ounces slivered almonds 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons Simply Organic adobo seasoning 1/2 teaspoon Simply Organic paprika Directions: In a dry 8-inch skillet, toast the almonds, stirring often, until fragrant and lightly golden, about five to eight minutes. Remove and pour the almonds into a small bowl and set off to the side.In a shallow dish, toss the asparagus with the olive oil, adobo seasoning and paprika.Preheat your grill. Real wood charcoal tastes best,

but gas works fine. Avoid briquettes; they make food taste like lighter fluid. Aim for medium-high heat - if your grill lid has a thermometer built into the lid, it should read about 375 degrees.Once hot, lay the asparagus perpendicular to your grill grates and cook for eight to 10 minutes, turning once until fork tender yet still firm.Serve on a platter topped with toasted almond slivers.

Cheech Marin Hosts Orange County Family justice Center “Runway of Strength Gala” Photos by Elise Souza The Orange County Family Justice Center (OCFJC) Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides direct victim assistance, empowerment and prevention resources to victims and families whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence had their largest fundraiser with Actor and Comedian Cheech Marin as host. Marin, known for The Lion King (1994), Nash Bridges (1996) and Cars (2006) was Master of Ceremonies for inaugural “Runway of Strength Gala” at the home of long-time OCFJC supporters Patrick and Jolynn Mahoney in Anaheim Hills at their Lost World Estate. This VIP event raised $250,000, featured a silent auction, live auction, passed appetizers, food stations and cocktails among the 480 guests who attended the event. Culminating in a high fashion modeling show featuring Betinnis Fashions, models made up of survivors of family violence, celebrities, and dignitaries strutted down the “Runway of Strength”. Guests were privy to a feast designed by Debbie Juliani from Aramark Sports and Entertainment as well as a tour of the Lost World Estates. Wth its sprawling gardens covering nearly 2 acres of tropical plants, rare palms, water features and a variety of seating areas, guests enjoyed the sights and dense vegetation that surrounded the 11,000 square foot home. The fashion show was hosted by Cheech Marin with Chadia Alameddin, owner of Betinnis in Brea. Marin’s funny personality shined as he introduced the “models” as they came out dancing, strutting and seriously having a good time showing off the latest in fashions by Betinnis. From casual wear to formal gowns, it was a true party atmosphere on the runway! The crowd went wild clapping and dancing along with the creative moves from the models. Honored for the John Welter Community Partner Award were Dr. Cynthia Coad and her husband Dr. Thomas Coad. Cynthia served on the OCFJC board of trustees from the inception; she and her husband Thomas have been contributors to its programs and its growth for the past 9 years. Also honored for the OCFJC Corporate Partner of the Year were CW Industries, Inc. with proprietors Roseli and Craig Wildvank. Since the OCFJC was founded, the Wildvank’s and their business CW Industries, Inc., have been very generous with their annual support – it has enabled the center to expand its programs and serve more victims of violence each year. The live auction gave folks some spectacular items that are not normally available for purchase such as The Lost World Wine Cellar Dinner for 10 – the winning bid came in at $4,000.00 where ten folks can enjoy a five course gourmet meal by Aramark Chefs paired with champagnes and fine wines from Pat and Jolynn Mahoney’s family wine cellar along with a tour of the lush grounds which includes their whimsical and surrealistic art collection. There was also the Bordeaux France/St. Emilion Experience – that lucky winner paid $5,200 for a 5 day 4 night trip at the Chateau Des Amis, which is a 4 bedroom Luxury Villa owned by the proprietor of Rarecat Wines. It’s a luxurious and charming chateau in the heart of St. Emilion where this lucky couple will receive a private guided winery tour and tastings at top Grand Cru Chateau’s in Bordeux’s wine country. There was more including a deep sea fishing trip, a custom jewelry piece, and a men’s Corum watch. The after party with live music by local Blues band Detour 91 had everyone on their feet dancing the evening away. The After Party food was just as amazing – guests enjoyed Cali Street Dogs, Shrimp Corn Dogs, Petite Cuban Sandwiches, Bags of Bacon Carmel Pop Corn, Dave’s Hand Crafted Pizza and a Hand Crafted Dessert Display that had a variety of sweets to choose from. All proceeds from the “Runway of Strength” Gala will fund essential programs provided by the OCFJC. Founded by retired Anaheim Police Chief John Welter in 2006 serves all of Orange County providing direct victim assistance, empowerment and prevention resources to victims and families whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault and elder abuse. The OCFJC transforms victims into survivors breaking the cycle of violence. The OCFJC serves 5000 victims of family violence annually. There are plenty of delicious options to satisfy even the biggest sweet tooth while keeping your family’s balanced diet in check. Best of all, these desserts can be made right in your own kitchen. By preparing your own creations, you can please even the pickiest of eaters and give your kids some extra nutrients with hidden servings of fruits or vegetables. The whole family will applaud your efforts. Whole fruit ice cream If you love frozen treats, try a healthier, homemade ice cream using whole fruit. Create a quick raspberry ice cream by combining 1 cup milk, 3/4 cup sugar or your favorite sweetener, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and 1 pound frozen raspberries in a Vitamix 5200. Turn on the blender and slowly increase the speed from one to 10, using the tamper to push the mixture down. In less than a minute, you’ll have a creamy, softserve style ice cream. You can make a variety of flavors by substituting blueberries, peaches, pineapple, strawberries or other frozen fruit for the raspberries. Non-dairy “ice cream” Whip up a batch of green apple ice cream for a non-dairy, vegan alternative to traditional ice cream.

Your kids will love the green hue of this after-dinner delight. Plus, they’ll get an extra helping of spinach, which is loaded with vitamins - especially A, C and K - on top of antioxidants and minerals like potassium and iron. Simply add 6 ounces of thawed apple juice concentrate, a peeled banana, 1 1/2 cups fresh spinach and 4 cups ice into your Vitamix. Blend on high for about 40 seconds and you’ll have a healthy dessert for your family to enjoy. The kids will never know this non-dairy delight is also nutritious. Satisfying dessert (or snack) For an easy option that will keep you full well into the evening hours, create a fruit and yogurt parfait. Fill a tall glass with alternating layers of Greek yogurt, fresh fruit and granola. Popular for its thick, creamy texture and rich taste, Greek yogurt is typically lower in sugar and higher in calcium and protein than regular yogurt. Mix in a touch of honey for extra sweetness. Your family will love the varied flavors and textures. Plus, you can choose any combination you like - from the classic vanilla yogurt with fresh berries, to strawberry yogurt with peaches. A parfait is also a smart breakfast option, providing the calories and energy needed to keep your kids moving throughout the morning.

Avocado-based mousse Everyone knows that avocado makes a great guacamole, but did you know it can also be used in desserts such as mousse, pudding, sorbet and ice cream? It may sound strange, but the fruit’s rich, creamy texture lends itself well to many sweet treats. For the chocolate lover in your family, try a smooth chocolate avocado mousse. This raw food recipe uses avocadoes, almond milk, dates and coconut butter for the base, along with cocoa or carob powder for the chocolate flavor. It’s best to prepare the mousse ahead of time or while dinner cooks, because it needs to chill for at least an hour

before serving. Top with fresh berries or a bit of shaved chocolate for those with an extra-strong sweet tooth. Making dessert at home puts you in control of the ingredients. It’s also a great way to increase the level of vitamins, minerals and healthy nutrients in your family’s diet. Fruit is naturally sweet, so it’s a great place to start. To enhance flavor even more, experiment with other natural sweeteners, such as agave nectar, honey or stevia in place of granulated sugar. Whether dessert is a nightly ritual in your household or an occasional treat, use these ideas to satisfy your family’s cravings.

Five sure-fire steps for planning the most memorable family vacation of your life

It’s no secret that families are busy these days. Between mom and dad’s careers, the kids’ school demands and extra-curricular activities, quality time together as a family is hard to come by. This busy lifestyle is inspiring a new travel movement, and 2015 is positioned for the grand rebirth of the family vacation. If you want to take an unforgettable family vacation this year, the idea of planning might seem overwhelming. But travel experts agree that planning ahead and researching your options

are important steps to ensure your trip is stress-free and full of fun. Follow these five steps to plan a trip your entire family will love and remember for years to come: Step 1: Make a travel wish list Kick off your travel planning by talking to all family members about what they’d like to see and do on vacation. Keep it light-hearted and have some fun - chat with your 4-year-old over breakfast or text your teen after school. As you have these conversations, notice commonalities, such as location and experiences. Step 2: Research, research, research After your initial conversations with your family, it’s time to do your research. The Internet has made selecting a travel destination that much easier - or harder because there are so many options. Check out tourism organizations, such as a Chamber of Commerce or Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CVB). Look up online hotel and travel reviews these sites can provide invaluable information for travelers. Many sites even have free online travel planners

or visitor’s guides. Step 3: Choose a destination for everyone Perhaps the most important consideration when planning a family vacation is to select a destination that has something for every person in your group. Myrtle Beach, S.C. is a great example of a location that is great for all ages. The 60 miles of pristine beaches are just one reason to visit - foodies can indulge on the best Southern and low-country cuisine; cultural enthusiasts can experience beautiful art museums and plantations; golfers tee off at a one of the many championship courses in the area. From water parks to natural wonders, Myrtle Beach is a true gem for family vacations. Visit www.visitmyrtlebeach.com to learn more. Step 4: Select your ideal accommodations Whether you’re vacationing for a long weekend or multiple weeks, it’s important to choose the right accommodations for your family. For example, if you know you’ll be at the beach daily, stay at a shore-

side resort. If you want to save on eating expenses, look into condos with kitchens. For big groups such as family reunions, consider a beach house that allows everyone to stay in their own room within one shared space. Step 5: Create a fun-filled itinerary This is a vacation, and while you shouldn’t plan out every hour of every day, having a basic itinerary gives direction to your trip and will help your group build excitement prior to your departure. Plus, planning ahead allows you to seek out deep discounts on tickets to shows and theme parks like the Alabama Theatre or Wild Water & Wheels in Myrtle Beach. You can even explore free activities like festivals and celebrations in the area that would be worthwhile to attend. If you feel like it’s time for your family to take a break from the stress of everyday life, a family vacation might be just what everyone needs. Follow these steps to select a family friendly destination such as Myrtle Beach to ensure a vacation full of unforgettable memories.

Nothing to sneeze at: tips for seasonal allergy relief Spring is upon us, and if you have seasonal allergies, you may be less excited about that than most. After all, what fun is finally freeing your face from that scarf if you’re just going to bury it in a tissue? It’s no fun at all, but allergies don’t have to make you miserable. “The key to surviving allergies is knowing what triggers your symptoms,” said allergist James Sublett, MD, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). “Because there can be millions of pollen particles in the air, finding allergy relief can seem nearly impossible for some. But by knowing what triggers your allergy symptoms, and how to avoid these allergens, you can be on your way to a sneeze-free season. Here are tips from ACAAI to help you find relief and enjoy spring. * The feel of cotton. For allergy suffers, not all clothing materials are created equal. Research shows that when synthetic fabrics rub against one another, they create an electrical charge that attracts pollen, which, as it turns out, is also electrically charged. Natural fibers such as cotton also breathe better, so they stay drier and less hospitable to moisture-loving

mold. * Adjust your workout routine. After months indoors, you can’t wait to exercise outside. However, exercising causes you to breathe more deeply and inhale the pollen that affects your allergy symptoms. If you’re planning a vigorous workout, try to stay indoors and if you’re planning on taking a casual walk, take a nondrowsy antihistamine before you go. Exercise outdoors when pollen counts are at their lowest - before dawn and in the late afternoon or early evening. * Garden smart. Think your spring allergies are going to force you to quit gardening? Think again. Taking an antihistamine about half an hour before you head outside will help. You should also wear gloves and a NIOSH-rated 95 filter mask if your tasks including digging in the dirt, which can stir up pollen. Avoid touching your eyes, and be sure to wash your hands, hair and clothing once you go back indoors. * Take something a little stronger. Over the counter intranasal steroids (nasal sprays) as well as non-drowsy antihistamines and decongestants can be beneficial for those suffering from mild allergies. However, people suffering from more severe allergies

will benefit from seeing an allergist. “An allergist will help you develop an action plan with ways to avoid allergy triggers and determine what treatment is best for your individual needs,” says Dr. Sublett. Many severe allergy sufferers find relief in immunotherapy - allergy shots that help the body build resistance to the effects of the allergen. While there is no cure for the more than 50 million Americans suffering from allergies, immunotherapy is known to modify and prevent disease progression. * Eliminate uninvited guests. You can make your spring allergies more bearable by limiting your exposure

to indoor allergens. Vacuum your furniture, leave your shoes by the door, shower frequently, cover your floors with washable throw rugs and use a dehumidifier to limit your mold exposure. All of these steps will help, and look for a good air purifier with a HEPA filter. Spring allergies are a fact of life but you don’t have to let them dictate yours. Employ the tips above, and you’ll be able to enjoy the warmer weather without constantly reaching for a tissue. The new time to have fun and bond with your family: breakfast Families are always looking for new ways to celebrate and spend time together. Why not start your weekend off on the right foot with a little family time in the kitchen over a delicious hot breakfast? Cooking in the kitchen is a great activity for families, including children of all ages. Consider the following ways you can get your children up and out of their nests each morning for fun family time together over a delicious breakfast: * Little children - The youngest members of the family are excellent ingredient mixers and are really good at decorating the table. Give them a craft project to create a table placemat for each plate, or teach them how to fold the napkins in a pretty way. * Older children - If you have kids in elementary school, ask them to put their math skills to use in measuring ingredients for the meal. They can also pour the milk or juice drinks and put the finished breakfast meal on a plate in a decorative way for serving at the table. * Teenagers - Ask your teenagers to be responsible for cooking the food. Anything dealing with the stove or oven is their responsibility, and they should also keep an eye out for

younger siblings getting too close. * Parents - You are the overseers of the entire kitchen project. You get to determine the final menu, and make certain that all the breakfast foods will be prepared for serving at the same time so everyone can sit down and enjoy the meal together. Once the food is ready and plated, have everyone sit down at the table together to enjoy the creation. Soon it will become a tradition that you celebrate your weekend breakfasts together as a family, creating fun memories for everyone. As you begin your family breakfasts together, try the following fun recipe your kids will love. Hungry Jack Hashbrowns are used to create nests, with some eggs and cheese in the middle for a creative springthemed breakfast dish. Hungry Jack Hashbrowns are ready to use, fully seasoned and cook perfectly crispy every time. They are made of 100 percent Idaho potatoes and do not require refrigeration. This recipe also can be used for a brunch if you are having company over. Cook eggs for 5 minutes, or until creamy and soft enough to easily scoop with a spoon. Season to taste with salt. Place two small cheese squares in the potato-lined muffin cup and top with about a tablespoon of the scrambled eggs. Sprinkle each muffin cup with bacon bits. Bake for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Gently run a butter knife around the edge of each muffin cup, to loosen. Allow nests to cool for 5 minutes, then remove from the pan and serve.

PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated (approved) The Newport

News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons

and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising. 8. Extremely Affordable Classified Advertising Only a Dollar a Word.

In keeping with our motto of providing highly fact if advertising at an affordable cost, the Newport News offers weekly classified advertising for only $1.00 a word with a 15 word minimum. You’re very welcome! 9.What does Good News mean to you? Most other news media is full of crime, war, celebrity scandals, and other kinds of bad news. We guarantee that when you place your advertising in the Newport News your ad will never be next to any kind of bad news. Our unusual but extremely delightful editorial policy of only printing good, positive family-friendly news makes reading this newspaper a pleasure. Keeping our readers happy keeps them in a pleasant mood when they are reading your advertising message. 10. Silent Salesman Works for you Seven Days a Week Our surveys show that the Newport News has more “coffee table life” with readers keeping a copy of the newspaper in their homes as long as a full week which is far longer than any daily publication. If you’d like to see a little excitement in your sales figures, place a call to Newport News for fast action on advertising that is effective, attractive, and affordable. Ask for one of our cheerful display advertising representatives to put some real power in your advertising when you call (949)-589-9990
