Seahorse Rare to California Found Near Eelgrass Restoration in Newport Bay Photo by: Robin Madrid On May 7, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife discovered a rare Pacific Seahorse during a monthly survey near an eelgrass restoration site in Upper Newport Bay. Orange County Coastkeeper says the finding is a sign that eelgrass restoration efforts are working and providing homes for both native and visiting species. “During one of our Marine Life Inventory programs, Fish and Wildlife staff collected a Pacific Seahorse in the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve. The last time this species was found in the reserve occurred sometime between 1999 and 2000,” said California Department of Fish & Wildlife Education Program Coordinator Robin Madrid in a statement. “It measured about six inches in height, and they can grow up to 12 inches.” This is only the tenth reported sighting of this species north of Baja since the 1800’s, as its typical range is from Baja, California to Peru and the Galapagos. In 2012, the Pacific Seahorse became classified as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with its population steadily decreasing
since the early 2000s, dropping by 50 percent between 2007 and 2012. The Pacific Seahorse relies exclusively on seagrass beds and coral reefs for its habitat, thus declines in seagrass habitat contribute to the demise of the seahorse, as does capture for traditional medicine and capture for pet trade. “It’s thrilling to see the seahorse, a species that really needs our help, find its way to our bay and seek refuge in our eelgrass beds,” says Marine Restoration Director Sara Briley. “Though its presence may only be temporary, finding the seahorse in our restored eelgrass bed is very encouraging and showcases the success of our program in returning valuable habitat back to Newport Bay.” Eelgrass provides an ideal habitat for the Pacific Seahorse because it: • Serves as refuge from predation: The seahorse blends almost perfectly within the seagrass habitat, as its thin body shape and similar body coloring make it nearly invisible to all predators but those with the sharpest eye. • Serves as a “holdfast”: As weak swimmers, the Pacific Seahorse
spends much of its life with its tails wrapped tightly around the blades of the eelgrass to prevent from being dragged away by strong currents. • Serves as foraging grounds: As eelgrass attracts many species, both large and small, eelgrass habitat provide a buffet of food sources to hungry seahorses. Last summer, Coastkeeper ’s Eelgrass Restorations Project in Upper Newport Bay successfully reached its goal of planting over 1,000 square meters of eelgrass. With the project now in its fifth year, Coastkeeper is expanding its efforts to restore Newport Bay with more restoration dates, launching its Living Shorelines Project to naturally buffer against sea level rise and partnering with the City of Newport Beach to assist dock owners with eelgrass mitigation. O R A N G E C O U N T Y COASTKEEPER: Orange County Coastkeeper is a member of the International Waterkeeper Alliance, which has 236 different independent programs across 29 countries. Newport Beach 36th Baroque Music Festival features sounds of the British Isles, June 19-26
One of Orange County’s most enjoyable summer music events, the Baroque Music Festival, Corona del Mar, brings a British theme to its 36th season. Over an eight day period from June 19th through 26th, a talented array of instrumentalists and vocalists will perform at venues in Corona del Mar and Newport Beach in five distinct concerts, offering a broad spectrum of music associated with the British Isles that flourished in the Baroque era and beyond. World renowned Baroque violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock is the Festival’s artistic director, esteemed for her eloquent performance and her infectious passion for Baroque music as reflected in her insightful commentary during the concerts. Blumenstock has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad, and serves as concertmaster with California’s finest period instrument ensembles. She plays a 17th century Guarneri violin and teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Juilliard School of Music. Page 4
Blumenstock has programmed this season’s concerts with music of British composers as well as of those who migrated to the Isles or simply appreciated them from afar as a source of musical inspiration. All pieces will be performed on period instruments or authentic reproductions for audiences in intimate venues, similar to the concert environments of the Baroque era. Following Festival tradition, concert audiences are invited to arrive early to enjoy Baroque music performed al fresco by the South Coast Brass, beginning 45 minutes before curtain time. Another Festival custom is a wine and waters reception following each performance, when musicians and audience members have an opportunity to mingle for conversation and refreshment. The Festival offers a subscription for all five concerts at $280 that provides priority seating at each event and a private post concert dinner following the Festival Finale on Sunday, June 26th. ENVIRONMENTAL NATURE CENTER OFFERS OUTDOOR OPTION FOR KIDS THIS SUMMER Children have fun and make friends while learning about nature in an outdoor, hands-on setting. On June 27, 2016, the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) will begin its 39th year of Summer Nature Camp for children entering Kindergarten through 6th grade. Camp will be held Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with ½ day camps available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information please visit encenter.org “Summer is my favorite time of year,” said ENC Camp Director Lori Whalen. “Watching our campers learn while having a great time is priceless. Young children’s minds are stimulated by nearly everything around them, so the more diverse and engaging their surroundings, the more their minds learn and grow. I get to see a lot of growth in a lot of kids each Summer!” Since 1977, the ENC’s Nature Camp has provided quality science education in an outdoor, hands-on setting. This year’s Summer Nature Camp is divided into eight week-long sessions where campers will spend most of their time outside observing nature up close using tools like binoculars, magnifying lenses and microscopes. Weekly themes include Nature Detectives, Weird Science, Amazing Animals, Journey Through Time, Outdoor Explorers, Nature Play, Outdoor Creativity and Tail Tales, in which camp teachers align their daily activities with children’s literature. “Outdoor environments are
important to children’s development of independence and autonomy,” said ENC Executive Director Bo Glover. “Children’s stress levels fall within minutes of seeing green spaces. Play protects children’s emotional development whereas loss of free time and a hurried lifestyle can contribute to anxiety.” About the ENC Founded in 1972, the ENC is a fascinating combination of 15 California native plant communities, wildlife habitat, walking trails, and sustainably designed, LEED Platinum certified learning center. For over 40 years, the ENC has been shaped and caressed into a 5-acre landscape for learning, a sanctuary from life’s pressures and a place of preservation and instruction. Serving over 22,000 students and thousands of visitors annually, the ENC is recognized as a
leader in science and social science education providing opportunities for increasing our community’s knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the natural world. The ENC recently purchased property to develop a nature play area, and construct our community’s first nature based preschool. With a mission of providing quality education through hands-on experience with nature, the ENC inspires all generations to protect the natural world by serving as our community’s foremost authority on ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental education. The ENC is a non-profit 501(c)-3 public benefit corporation. For more information call 949-645-8489, or visit www.ENCenter.org. The ENC is located at 1601 16th St. in Newport Beach.

Conversation with Ken Seeley, Renowned Substance Abuse Expert and Host of the Emmy Award Winning Television Series; Intervention The phones are always ringing at Ken Seeley’s spacious Palm Springs offices. Some calls are as important as life-and death where families of addicts are calling desperately to get Seeley’s advice about a chronic drug-abusing family member and other matters of a serious crisis tone. Ken Seeley’s secretary interrupts our interview with “Mr. Seeley, I have a CNN producer on the phone wanting to get your opinion on a show they’re doing this weekend.” “Ask them if can call them back,” Seeley replies calmly. Major television news producers and onair talent usually seek out Ken Seeley for input for important topics involving celebrity substance abuse. Seeley is a regular contributor to CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS, Fox, and ABC on the topic of addiction. Ever since the powerful Emmy award winning series ‘Intervention’ ran on A&E for fourteen seasons, Ken Seeley has been regarded as the foremost expert in the field of drug, and alcohol abuse. Those familiar with the Intervention series know the format which follows real life dealing with the frantic struggles faced by many different kinds of addicts. Each episode followed one or two participants, each of whom has a substance dependence or other type of severe addiction. The subjects believe they are being filmed for a documentary on their problem, but their situations are actually being documented in anticipation of an intervention by family and/or friends. During the intervention, each participant is given an ultimatum: go into rehabilitation immediately, or risk losing contact, income, or other privileges from the loved ones who instigated the intervention. Often, other tactics are used to persuade the addicted person into treatment, which vary depending on the situation; some of these include threats to invoke outstanding arrest warrants, applying for custody of the addict’s children, foreclosing on the addict’s property, and break-up of marriages or other relationships. The producers usually follow up months later to monitor the addicted person’s progress and film it for “follow-up” episodes of the series The reporter asked Ken Seeley why he left the Famed Interventionist Ken Seeley popular television series for a time after completing dangerous, a nurse travels with the addict to the the intervention for Linda in Season 8? “I determined it was an important time for me rehab center, providing medical assistance to to focus on my personal intervention service, keep the addict from suffering during the journey. The book is about overcoming the denial that leads to common addictions while bringing guidance to those struggling with addiction. Face It and Fix It has been said to “leave you with a greater sense of self-awareness and the skills you need to both improve your relationships and to live the life you deserve” The reporter asks;” If an individual wants to reach out for help for them self or a loved one, how do they emotionally get to that place to ask for help and where could they contact you?” Ken Seeley replies: It is easy, well not for them. It takes a brave person to pick up the phone to begin the journey to get a loved one’s life back. Just call, someone will be there to answer your questions. Wayne’s performance included his hits, “Sara Smile, Do You Believe in Me Now?” and “I Love you This Much.” He spoke about his mission as a former foster child to bring awareness to kids who age out of the system and become homeless, which included his 1,700-mile walk from Nashville to Phoenix to bring attention to it. “I’ve been given this platform to help these kids,” he said of his homeless/foster care experience, and he lauded Olive Crest’s work with foster youth. His new book, Walk to Beautiful, is a tribute to mothers in celebration of Mother’s Day, as well as to Wayne’s late foster mother Bea Russell. His book was a gift to all mothers attending, and the dedicated author autographed copies of it following his performance. The evening included a festive cocktail reception in keeping with the concert atmosphere, with tray-passed and stationary appetizers, as well as tempting silent and live auction items. The live auction included tickets to the Country Donna Giordano, Dave Hirz, and Olive Crest National Director of Music Awards, tickets to the award-winning Broadway show, Hamilton, and Development Rhonda Tagge a Bristol Farms sushi party for 20, which sold twice for $3,500. The evening’s estimated net proceeds of $118,500 benefited Olive Crest’s Project Independence, a unique and comprehensive program that provides foster youth, ages 14 to 24, the support necessary to become independent and successful adults. The Founder’s Award was presented to Dave G. Hirz, CEO and President of Smart & Final Stores, Inc. Presenting the award were Olive Crest founders Dr. Donald and Lois Verleur. “Dave is truly committed to bettering the kids’ lives at Olive Crest,” Lois said. The Champion for the Children Award recipient was Rutan & Tucker, LLC, with partners and Olive Crest trustees William Meehan and Lisa Neal accepting. In presenting the award, Olive Crest CEO Donald A. Verleur said, “Rutan & Tucker has a huge heart for children.” Among those who were integral to the fundraiser were Honorary Chair Kendra Doyel, Vice President of Public Relations, Ralphs Supermarkets; Honorary Emcee Dennis L. McIntyre, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Stater Bros. Markets; Tim Bauer, Olive Crest Executive Director of Development; Benefit Co-Chairs and Olive Crest Trustees Lorraine Bader and Lori Feeney; Dennis McIntyre and Kendra Doyel Lori Feeney and Lorraine Bader Olive Crest Board Chairman, Jim Woodside; Grocery Industry Co-Chairs: Mickie Sharp-Villanueva, The Performance Group Business Development Mgr, So Cal, and Paul Dalton, The Coco-Cola Co. and Kroger Account Executive for Minute Maid Chilled and Shelf Stable Brands. Among the major event underwriters were the Kylie Schuyler and Doug Hodge family, DSW Shoe Warehouse, Arizona Canning Company, Coca-Cola Refreshments, Monster Energy, Niagara, Pepsi Beverage Company, Snyder’s Lance/Jack Links, Sunny Delight, The Performance Group, and Young’s Market. Since 1973, Olive Crest has transformed the lives of more than 70,000 abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families. The nonprofit works tirelessly to meet the individual needs of kids in crisis by providing safe homes, counseling and education for both youth and parents. The many innovative programs offered reflect its conviction that strengthening the family is one of the most powerful ways to help heal children. The evening’s proceeds benefited Olive Crest’s Project Independence program. Whether a youth is in foster care, a group home, transitional housing, or living on his or her own, the program creates a relationship-based plan designed for each youth’s specific needs. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated
(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people
of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

ANDRÉ WATTS, RETURNS TO PACIFIC SYMPHONY FOR A SEASON FINALE PERFORMANCE OF BEETHOVEN’S BREATHTAKING PIANO CONCERTO NO. 4
André Watts Concert also includes Berlioz’s extraordinary “Symphonie Fantastique” More than 50 years after Leonard Bernstein introduced him to the world at the age of 16, André Watts remains one of the most celebrated and beloved piano superstars. Having played before royalty in Europe and heads of government in nations all over the world, it’s hard to find a more accomplished pianist than Watts. In his hands, Beethoven’s revolutionary Piano Concerto No. 4 becomes a fitting finale to Pacific Symphony’s 2015-16 classical season. A longtime friend of Music Director Carl St.Clair and the Symphony, Watts returns for his sixth performance with Pacific Symphony. Led by St.Clair, Beethoven’s masterpiece shares the stage with Berlioz’s musically riveting work, “Symphonie Fantastique,” inspired by the composer’s infatuation with a British ingénue. Full of vivid descriptions of obsession and dreams, tantrums and tenderness, suicide, murder, ecstasy and despair—the piece is a musical wonder. This concert takes place Thursday through Saturday, June 2-4, at 8 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Page 16
Concert Hall. Tickets range from $25-$110. A preview talk with Alan Chapman begins at 7 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. Also on Saturday, June 4, is the Symphony’s fifth “Plazacast and Community Festival.” This free party on the Plaza outside Segerstrom Center for the Arts begins at 5 p.m. with food trucks, music, dance and art before the Symphony’s concert is projected simultaneously on the wall at 8 p.m. Another chance to hear Berlioz’s fascinating work, “Symphonie Fantastique,” takes place during Sunday Casual Connections, on Sunday, June 5, at 3 p.m., when Maestro St.Clair and the orchestra uncover the semi-autobiographical story of an artist’s self-destructive passion for a beautiful woman. Tickets for the Connections performance are $25-$96. In discussion, Maestro St.Clair pointed to the Los Angeles Times review of Watts’ April recital at the Broad Stage. The headline read: “At 69, André Watts is playing like a teenage phenom.” The article went on to say: “Watts, who turns 70 in
The Newport News
June… demonstrate[d] the young virtuoso in him is alive and well but tamed by an expressive and mature artist. Throughout his recital, Watts achieved a level of authority and command seldom heard from a pianist of any age.” “This is why I have a rewarding and long-lasting musical relationship with André,” says St.Clair. “He is a consummate artist and one of America’s most distinguished musicians. We are so fortunate that he chooses to join us as often as he does. This is the second of the five Beethoven Piano Concertos that he has performed with me and Pacific Symphony. It is always an enlightening musical experience when we share this great music of our beloved master Beethoven with André.” Beethoven completed his five piano concertos between the ages of about 19-20 to when he was just 38. Six years later, he started a sixth, but abandoned it, marking the end of his writing for this form. Like Mozart, Beethoven was a composer who had stunned audiences and made loads of money by composing ridiculously difficult piano concertos and effortlessly performing them in concert. Unfortunately, this was about the time Beethoven began growing deaf, and he could no longer trust himself to perform. For this particular concerto, his fourth, the piano begins alone, playing for just five bars with a gentle theme that sets the tone for the whole movement. The second movement is no longer gentle—the piano and orchestra seem to exist in different worlds, like a couple that can’t get along—angry, charming, petulant. At the premiere of his Fourth Concerto, two boys stood by the piano holding candles. At one point, Beethoven leapt up, knocking the candles to the floor. The element of the unexpected was another reason audiences flocked to Beethoven’s concerts! Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto is light years ahead of its time and the perfect vehicle in the hands of a legendary pianist like Watts. For years, Watts has always been the musician Pacific Symphony calls when they want to celebrate— whether it’s a show-stopping start or a memorable end to a season. It was in September 2012 that the superstar pianist last lit up the stage, opening the Symphony’s 34th season by playing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 to standing ovations. In June 2010, Watts joined the orchestra for St.Clair’s 20th anniversary
celebration, the final concert of the season, performing Grieg’s sweepingly romantic Piano Concerto. In 2008, Watts rocked the concert hall by performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. But it was in 2004 that Watts last performed one of Beethoven’s piano concertos—his third. Many sense in Berlioz’s ‘Symphony Fantastique’ the classical tradition and presence of Beethoven. At the same time, Berlioz strove to write “new music”—meeting with tremendous success. The most remarkable of first symphonies, “Fantastique” sounds and behaves like nothing ever heard before. A self-portrait of its composer and an epic for a huge orchestra, through its movements, “Fantastique” tells the story of an artist’s obsession over a beautiful woman. The symphony describes his extreme emotions in all their glory and horror. Leonard Bernstein described it as the first musical expedition into “psychodelia,” because of its hallucinatory and dream-like nature, and because history suggests Berlioz composed at least a portion of it under the influence of opium. According to Bernstein, “Berlioz tells it like it is. You take a trip, you wind up screaming at your own funeral.” “Symphony Fantastique’ is a unique work in the orchestral repertoire,” says St.Clair. “It is often thought that it comes from the late 19th century, at the end of the Romantic Period. Actually, it was premiered in 1830, three years after the death of our dear Ludwig. The first rehearsal of the ‘Symphony Fantastique’ had to be cancelled because—and get this—there weren’t enough chairs or candles to light the room or seat the number of performers. “The piece is SO far ahead of its time and it lit the path for many of the Romantic composers to follow, including Wagner, Liszt and others,” St.Clair continues. “It also is the first extensive tone poem with a story and a musical connection via the idée fixe that Wagner later uses in his opera, especially his ‘Ring Cycle.’ It is a miracle—and a musical journey not to be missed as it concludes our 2015-16 series.” Pacific Symphony’s classical series performances are made possible by the Hal and Jeanette Segerstrom Family Foundation, with additional support from the Avenue of the Arts Hotel, KUSC and PBS SoCal. The Plazacast is supported by The James Irvine Foundation and Sunday Casual Connections receives additional support from KPCC.
