High hopes head injury program raises $100,000 to help brain injured adults On Sunday, July 12, 2015, Eric Marienthal, Patti Austin, Chuck Loeb and Peter White performed at the 17th Annual Eric Marienthal & Friends Benefit Concert at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach. The event raised $100,000. All proceeds from the event go directly to High Hopes Head Injury Program, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, which is dedicated to helping brain injured adults regain their independence, through low-cost rehabilitation and care. More than 800 people came out for the concert, which was emceed by Talaya Trigueros from 94.7 The WAVE and Mark Desmond, the director of High Hopes. Desmond was thrilled with how the event came together so well. “We try to outdo ourselves each and every year. From the planning, staff, Hyatt Regency Newport Beach and Tulsa Rib Company to our sponsors, donors and attendees, I couldn’t have asked for a better event. All of this support for the event helps our brain injured students with scholarships so they can attend High Hopes.” High Hopes thanks the event sponsors for their support. They included Lincoln Consulting Group, LLC, H & H Lee Charitable
Foundation, Robert Homan, Dani & Tom White, Citibank, Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, The Winery, Safelite AutoGlass, Xerox, Smooth Jazz News, KSBR 88.5 and 94.7 The Wave. Plans are already under way for next year’s 18th Annual Eric Marienthal & Friends Benefit Concert, scheduled for July 17, 2016. Sponsorship opportunities are available by calling High Hopes at (949) 733-0044. TREKKIES ALERT! PACIFIC SYMPHONY REVIVES 2009 HIT MOVIE, “STAR TREK” Pacific Symphony’s 2015 Summer Festival propels its audience across the universe, when it embarks on a thrilling and music-fueled adventure aboard the USS Enterprise for “Star Trek.” On the big screen boldly going where “no man has gone before” is J.J. Abrams’ 2009 blockbuster film starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as a young Captain Kirk and Spock in an alternate reality many years before the original television series. On stage, the Symphony performs Academy Award-winner Michael Giacchino’s epic score live, beneath the stars, providing the ideal backdrop for the intergalactic film. It’s an immersive concert experience and the perfect evening for music lovers, film-goers, science-fiction fans and anyone who loves the cult films and television series or wants to introduce them to someone new. Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman leads the orchestra in this symphonic night at the movies, which takes place on Saturday, Aug. 22, at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre ( f o r m e r l y Ve r i z o n W i r e l e s s Amphitheater). The film begins at 8
p.m. and guests are encouraged to pack a picnic and arrive at the venue as early as 6 p.m., dressed in their best “Star Trek” gear. Concert tickets range from $25 (lawn seating) to $107 (orchestra). For more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 7555799 or visit www.PacificSymphony. org. Abrams selected Giacchino to compose the scores for “Star Trek” and “Star Trek Into Darkness” (2013) after years working with him on the television shows “Alias” and “LOST.” Abrams’ first interest in Giacchino’s music came from his years writing scores for video games, including “The Lost World: Jurrasic Park.” Giacchino’s credits feature some of the most popular and acclaimed film projects in recent history, including “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and “The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” Giacchino’s 2009 score for the Pixar hit “Up” earned him an Oscar, a Golden Globe, the BAFTA, the Broadcast Film Critics’ Choice Award and two Grammy Awards. This summer, Giacchino has three major films in theaters: Disney’s
“Tomorrowland,” Pixar’s “Inside Out” and Universal’s “Jurassic World.” “What an honor it is for me to be a part of the ‘Star Trek’ legacy,” says Giacchino. “I was a huge fan of the series when I was a kid. For this opportunity, I must thank my friend and collaborator, J.J. Abrams, who made these films incredibly fun to work on. J.J.’s inspired new vision of the ‘Star Trek’ saga brought me immediately back to my childhood, as if I were watching Gene Roddenberry’s brilliant creation for the first time on television. J.J. and I are among the lucky few who get to hear the world’s most talented musicians bring a score like ‘Star Trek’ to life in person. But now that’s all changed. For me, the most exciting aspect of the ‘Star Trek’ film with orchestra concerts is that audiences now have an opportunity to experience the films in a way that can’t be replicated in their living rooms with a full orchestra.” The original “Star Trek” series was created by Gene Roddenberry in 1966 amid the “space race” of the Kennedy era. Not only was the talented TV writer deeply inspired by the “new frontier,” but he also made
sure to develop characters and plots that shared his values of humanism, inclusiveness and tolerance. The crew aboard the starship Enterprise was fueled by faith in human goodness and the joy of discovery. Despite its short run of only three seasons on NBC, the show was syndicated and from there gathered a loyal following and zealous group of fans who call themselves “Trekkies.” It spawned a wide array of cult films, cartoons, comics, novels and spin-off television shows.
Healthy happy family travel Looking to take a road trip but dread hearing the infamous “Are we there yet?” or “Can we please, please stop for fast food?” questions. Never fear, Registered Dietitian, author and mother, Pamela Nisevich Bede, offers creative ways to keep your family (and you) satisfied and entertained while traveling. * Who cares if we’re there yet? Avoid hearing “Are we there yet?” by packing plenty of entertaining options for little travelers. In

addition to today’s technological offerings, think back to what kept you occupied while sitting in the backseat. Equip your pint-sized passengers with books and travel board games, and play no-equipment-needed games, such as license plate bingo, I spy, or 20 questions. * Energy to burn. you get there, do a quick round of family jumping jacks or a 10-minute game of tag. It might feel silly, but releasing pent up energy will definitely make the car ride more peaceful. * Plan ahead. There’s nothing worse than being buckled in the car for hours with nothing healthy to snack on. For your next trip, avoid feeling trapped by packing all-natural, healthful snacks such as those from Gourmet Nut. They combine great flavor and healthy ingredients in a line of Gourmet On the Go snack mixes, such as Mega Omega and Almond Cranberry Crunch. They are full of protein-containing nuts and antioxidant-packed, fiber-filled dried fruits sure to please the pickiest passenger. * Drink up. Make sure you and your family stay hydrated during road trips by packing refillable water bottles for the long ride. Visit your local dollar store to stock up on different colored water bottles to
assign to each person. If you’re feeling crafty, have your kids decorate their own bottles with markers, stickers, puffy paint and anything creative from the craft store. Your family will not only enjoy drinking water from their own personalized bottle, but everyone will be proud of their handiwork. * Don’t fight it. As the saying goes, timing is everything. When planning your next road trip, work with your child’s schedule and not against it. Put them to bed at their regular time and feed them breakfast as you always would. For example, leave before the sun comes up so your child is still able to sleep during part of the ride. Once it’s time for a rest stop, you’ll be able to gas up and give your kids a proper, healthy breakfast at their regular time. You’ll be grateful for the quiet moments at the start of your trip and for happier children as the ride continues.

the history of the Sawdust festival The Sawdust was originally called the Laguna Artists and Gallery Owners Association after breaking away from the Festival of Arts in 1965, in protest of that show’s jurying system. That first festival was located on a vacant lot at the bottom of Park Avenue (on the Peacock lot) with only a few dozen exhibitors. It was called the ‘Rejects Festival’ by the media. There was no show in 1966, but the show did reappear, with more exhibitors, in 1967 on an empty lot on North Coast Highway (The Kronquist lot). That show was a great success and led to the artists moving to its current location on Laguna Canyon Road, leasing the property from Walter and Dorothy Funk, and when the artists spread sawdust on the ground to combat the dust and mud, the media called it the ‘Sawdust Festival,’ and that name has identified the show for decades. Looking for room to expand, in 1968 the show moved to its present three-acre site at 935 Laguna Canyon Road, welcoming one and all with the promise to educate the public as well as provide a sales outlet for unrestricted art.Today, artists demonstrate their art in designated “demo” booths where the public is invited to participate, as well as working in their own booths. The lovely eucalyptus grove with its rippling waterfall provides an irresistible background. The Sawdust Art Festival is truly a local event. All artists exhibiting in the festival are residents of Laguna Beach. Unlike some other non-profit organizations dedicated to the arts, the Sawdust Art Festival’s administration is made up of exhibiting members. Each year, exhibiting artists are elected as members of the Board of Directors. In addition, booth locations are determined by an annual lottery, usually held in February. Because the show is non-juried, enthusiastic amateurs display their work along
One of the first facades ~1978~
Some of the first booths ~1968~ with accomplished veteran artists, providing the spice and variety that make every show different from the last. In keeping with the spirit of its beginnings, the Sawdust Art Festival intends to be different from other art shows, visualizing itself as an artists’ “happening” rather than a stuffy exhibit. To that end, the artists themselves build a unique village of individual booths from the ground up each summer. The architectural
designs are as varied and interesting as the work they showcase. Once the booths are finished, the sawdust goes down, the landscaping goes in, music fills the air and once again the Sawdust Art Festival magically returns for another summer. It is truly a unique experience in the arts that brings visitors back year after year. To g e t m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n on the Sawdust Festival visit: sawdustartfestival.org

DIRECTOR Diane Challis Davy DEBUTS HER 20th PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS “The Pursuit of Happiness,” the 2015 Pageant of the Masters – Laguna’s world-famous theatrical celebration of art in tableaux vivants – “living pictures” – is shaping up to be a big crowd pleaser this summer. It’s an exciting mix of classic Americana, vivid storytelling, wildly diverse international art and social history all presented in the outdoor splendor of the Festival of Arts’ Irvine Bowl, with live music, narration and dazzling theatrical illusions, effects and stage magic. It’s also exactly the sort of polished, professional entertainment Pageant audiences have come to expect from director Diane Challis Davy during her 20 years at the helm of this unprecedented production. It was the fall of 1995 when Diane “Dee” Challis Davy assumed her role as director/producer of the Pageant of the Masters. In the two decades since, Challis Davy has proven herself to be a tireless risk-taker in her efforts to complement the show’s artful presentation of tableaux vivants with imaginative additions to the programs’ theatricality. During her tenure, the program has incorporated more seamless transitions, occasional use of live singers and dancers, special effects and video projection, even
animal co-stars, all in a concerted effort to keep the Pageant theatrically vital. But, of all her innovations, it is her assigning of different themes to her programs that has set her shows apart from the rest. In the process, her themes have had another beneficial effect: they encourage happy patrons and enthusiastic volunteers to keep coming back to see what she’ll do with her new themes year after year. And these days, Challis Davy especially enjoys watching as her themes seem to have a knack for unintentionally dovetailing with popular online social media memes. After serving as assistant director for more than a decade, Challis Davy already had themes in mind when she took over as director. “The idea of doing a themed show was Don Williamson’s,” she said, referring to the Pageant’s director from 19641978. Challis Davy was far more modest about her 20-year tenure, longer than any other director in Pageant history. “Our audiences expect a great night of theatre and music, and we want them to have a great time, tell their friends and want to come back. Same for my backstage artists
and volunteers. Obviously, we can’t please everybody all the time. But, that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to give it our very best shot.” Director Diane Challis Davy’s own “pursuit of happiness” seems to have led to right where she wants to be, directing the show she knows inside out and has loved for as long as she’s been at the Pageant. ABOUT THE PAGEANT OF THE MASTERS Presented by the Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach The Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. Audiences are amazed and enchanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (“living pictures”), incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. Keeping kids stimulated all summer can help prevent the summer learning slide For most kids, the final school bell signals a break from learning and a focus on summer fun, but for parents it often means an uphill battle to beat the “summer slide” in their child’s learning. Significant knowledge and skills gained during the previous school year can be lost if children don’t participate in enrichment and learning activities during summer break. In fact, children run the risk of losing newly learned Common Core curriculum skills they developed during the year. The good news for parents who are concerned about the summer slide is that several Common Core teachings can be easily adapted from the classroom to fun summer projects conducted at home and in the community. “The summer slide can mean a child may spend the first two months of the new school year playing catchup instead of learning new material,” says Dr. Ashley Norris, assistant dean of the College of Education at University of Phoenix. “Parents need to plan a balanced mix of activities for their children during the summer that not only include sports and extracurricular activities,
but learning activities that emphasize math and reading skills.” Norris, who prepares prospective and current teachers to address dynamics in schools and the classroom, recommends parents incorporate Common Core themes into the summer curriculum they plan for their children. Here are six fun, educational activities that can help kids avoid the summer slide and also provide parents with opportunities to connect with their children. 1. Turn everyday activities into learning opportunities According to a recent University of Phoenix College of Education survey, 38 percent of teachers believe Common Core curriculum ties learning to real-world scenarios. Errands are an easy way to engage children in reading and math skills. Consider having your child help make the grocery list, go shopping with you and practice adding up the bill and calculating the tax. 2. Seek inspiration from community events and activities Visit the farmers market to learn about vegetables and teach the importance of healthy eating. Attend concerts and then ask your child to research his favorite musical
instruments. Head to the local nature center to learn about native plants and then return home and ask the kids to draw what they saw. 3. Embrace technology and create interactive projects and activities Apps and websites such as Pinterest are making Common Core projects available for parents to set up at home. Pinterest has new math and reading challenges that are posted daily. You can also search for Common Core apps developed by schools across the country combining video games with math and science skills. 4. Focus on core competencies Look for activities that emphasize core skills such as math and reading. Creating a cooking project is one of the best ways to integrate these skills as children are required to follow directions of a recipe and learn about cooking elements such as time, temperature and measuring ingredients. 5. Balance academic and social engagement Look for activities or summer camps that not only promote social skill development, but allow for knowledge in specific content areas.
Science and technology camps provide hands-on learning projects such as bridge building, mouse-trap cars or the construction of robots. Many science museums offer home projects on their websites. 6. Plan a trip to the library Common Core requires students to conduct in-depth research from multiple sources and then discuss their findings with peers. Families can do similar activities throughout the summer. Each family member can search for information on a chosen topic then set a time to gather and discuss the findings, which research tools were used and if more information is available. Make it a game by voting for the family member who found the most interesting or unique fact. If you keep them engaged during the summer break, your children can pick up right where they left off when the school bell rings in the fall.

2015 Philharmonic Society Benefit Gala Raises More Than $100,000 Photos by: Peggy O’Donnell The Philharmonic Society of Orange County presented its 2015 benefit gala ALL THAT JAZZ: A Night on Bourbon Street at Samueli Theater, Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Chaired by Kathy Hamilton and Bobbitt Williams, ALL THAT JAZZ transported guests to a festive evening in New Orleans and featured a performance by the two-time Grammy-nominated Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Proceeds from the evening, which netted more than $100,000, benefit the Philharmonic Society and its nationally recognized Youth Music Education Programs. The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra’s performance was just delightful; they played big band favorites and jazz standards, including Frank Sinatra’s “On the Sunny Side of the Street” and a slowed down, romantic arrangement of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Heart and Soul.” The gala live auction featured seven items and a Fund a Need. Kenton and Marti Anderson won the luxury shopping and dining package at South Coast Plaza, including a $1,000 gift certificate, dinners at Marche Moderne and Capital Grille, and two bottles of Cabreo Il Borgo 2011. David and Anne Rosenberg won a dinner party for eight in home with Chef Ugo Allesina of Prego Ristorante, including three bottles of wine from Araujo Estate. The Rosenbergs were also the winners of Xan Confections’ Chocolate Party for up to twelve guests who will enjoy premium wine, chocolate pairings, assorted appetizers, and hands-on experience working with chocolate. Shell Grossman and Linda Rahn took home the 2016 Ojai Music Festival package, including three nights of hotel stay, two festival passes, and exclusive artist experiences with an intimate group of Philharmonic Society supporters and classical music aficionados. Darrel and Marsha Anderson won the Opera Lover’s Desert Getaway, including two nights of hotel stay, two tickets to any 2016 Santa Fe Opera performance, access for two to the Santa Fe Opera’s Preview Buffet and Opera Club Lounge, and a backstage tour. Gary Capata and Phil and Karen Ridout won the VIP concert experience with Yo-Yo Ma, including a meet-and-greet opportunity and tickets to the Philharmonic Society’s 2016 benefit gala, while Carl and Elaine Neuss won the VIP concert experience with violinist Joshua Bell. The performances with Yo-Yo Ma and Joshua Bell are part of the Philharmonic Society’s 2015-16 season. The Fund a Need portion of the evening, which raised $39,000 for the Philharmonic Society’s “Strike Up the Band!” program, began with a performance of two patriotic songs played on the bass by sixth grade student Maxwell Ramirez, accompanied by his teacher Ethan Reed. Julie Metz, instrumental music instructor for the Savannah School District in Anaheim where Maxwell attends, testified that one year ago, Maxwell, like many of the other students who reside in the Savannah School District where 15% of families live below the federal poverty threshold, had never seen an orchestra instrument up close let alone dream that he could play one as well as he does now. The Philharmonic Society’s previous two galas, An Evening with MANCINI (2013) and UNFORGETTABLE (2014), enabled the Society to serve 14 middle schools in Orange County, putting more than $130,000 worth of new musical instruments and materials into the hands of schoolchildren just like Maxwell. The Society plans to expand the “Strike up the Band!” program further this year with the funds raised at ALL THAT JAZZ: A Night on Bourbon Street. Founded in 1954, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County is Orange County’s oldest and most recognized music organization, presenting the world’s most acclaimed symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, performing organizations and artists. A catalyst for cultural and educational development throughout its region, the Philharmonic Society is a key resident company in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. New Partners Francisco Pasquel and Naranjo Win the 2015 CashCall Mortgage Futurity Final Riders competed in the $15,000 CashCall Mortgage Futurity Final on an unusually wet and rainy Southern California Sunday afternoon. Francisco Pasquel and his new mount Naranjo trumped the competition in blazing fashion and went home with the top prize. Those not quite ready to step into the grand prix classes can gain valuable mileage with this agerestricted series and final dedicated to horses under 10 years old. In addition to the experience, each class offers good prize money. Argentinian FEI course designer Ivan Tagle designed a fair track for the young horses in the class. The seventh element, a vertical-oxervertical triple combination, each one stride apart, proved to be a tough question, as it was there that rails fell for a third of the riders. Eight qualified for the jump-off, including Friday’s Markel Insurance Grand Prix winner Lane Clarke, today aboard MH Wardance. Three of the eight in the jump-off round went double clean. Arturo Parada Vallejo on his own Estano set the pace, clean in 42.84. Third to go, Pasquel and the talented Naranjo, shaved seconds off the leading time with tight turns and bold angles, clean Page 12
Pasquel and Naranjo celebrate the win in the 2015 CashCall Mortgage Futurity Final in 39.68. Last to go, Vani Khosla on her own Billy Mexico, knocked Vallejo from the second spot, stopping the clock clean in 42.54. But no one could catch Pasquel. A new partnership, Pasquel purchased Naranjo less than two months ago. “He’s eight years old,” Pasquel said. “I bought him in France.”
The Newport News
The connection between the two during the class gave no hint of their short time together. “I’m so excited for the future with this horse. It’s my second show with him,” exclaimed the winner. Incredibly rare in the summer months of Southern California, the last remnants of Tropical Storm
Dolores created some wet weather. Not a problem for Pasquel. “We got all wet - Calgary-style in Cali!” Pasquel laughed. “But it was a super course design. In the end, the footing was amazing here.” Photos by: CapturedMomentPhoto.com

PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated (approved) The Newport
News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons
and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising. 8. Extremely Affordable Classified Advertising Only a Dollar a Word.
In keeping with our motto of providing highly fact if advertising at an affordable cost, the Newport News offers weekly classified advertising for only $1.00 a word with a 15 word minimum. You’re very welcome! 9.What does Good News mean to you? Most other news media is full of crime, war, celebrity scandals, and other kinds of bad news. We guarantee that when you place your advertising in the Newport News your ad will never be next to any kind of bad news. Our unusual but extremely delightful editorial policy of only printing good, positive family-friendly news makes reading this newspaper a pleasure. Keeping our readers happy keeps them in a pleasant mood when they are reading your advertising message. 10. Silent Salesman Works for you Seven Days a Week Our surveys show that the Newport News has more “coffee table life” with readers keeping a copy of the newspaper in their homes as long as a full week which is far longer than any daily publication. If you’d like to see a little excitement in your sales figures, place a call to Newport News for fast action on advertising that is effective, attractive, and affordable. Ask for one of our cheerful display advertising representatives to put some real power in your advertising when you call (949)-589-9990
