Give your summer looks something fresh Warm weather has arrived, and with it comes the need for new summer fashions. By now you’ve already gone through your closet and have determined you have absolutely nothing to wear. For this reason, the changing season means it’s time to go shopping and update your wardrobe with this spring and summer’s must haves. You could spend a lot of money purchasing all new clothes that will keep you comfortable and cool, or you can be strategic about giving your wardrobe a refresher with seasonal pieces that work well all spring and summer at affordable prices. Here are some of the latest seasonal pant styles for every woman’s summer wardrobe: * Straight crops with a modern boyfriend fit - Pants are sometimes preferred during the summer months even when the temperature gets hot. If you work in a casual office setting, sit in air conditioning all day or spend your days traveling. Pair them with stylish blouses for a more professional look that will still feel comfortable out in the heat. * Cool and fashionable crops - When you need pants that move but keep you cool and comfortable. They are great for summer days at the office and also for hanging out in the backyard. Choose fun and casual tops for playtime with the kids, or go with dress shirts and blouses for office wear. * Sometimes you just need a

longer pair of shorts for summer activities. You can even dress them up for less casual occasions like neighborhood parties, and date night. They go great with tanks, blouses or even sweaters on a cooler evening. * The any occasion shorts When the temps are rising, shorts are exactly what you need. They’re

perfect for casual wear, play and even dressy events if you pair them with heeled sandals. With a good selection of each of these styles in your closet this spring and summer, you’ll never have to worry about finding the perfect outfit for any occasion. Plus, you’ll be looking cool, comfortable and classy all season long.

Do or do not. There is no ‘Try’ ~Yoda The Newport News

Activate Your Summer with These Simple Tips Fitness ideas to power up your season When short-sleeve shirts, tanks and shorts make their way into your everyday wardrobe, summer has officially arrived. And looking and feeling your best for all of those warm weather activities is important. Busy women know that being active means more than just picking up a few healthy habits; it requires daily dedication. But sometimes despite best laid plans, real life gets in the way. You miss that gym visit or sleep through that workout class. Make the most of your summer days with these tips that are not only fun, but will get you moving, even on the busiest days. Establish a summer schedule. With kids out of school, it can be easy to fall into a more laid-back routine. Fight the urge to turn on the television and create an active schedule with your children. After dinner, have a family walk around the neighborhood or plan for weekend outings to your favorite local nature preserve. Schedule a walking meeting at work. If sitting in an office is part of your daily routine, make a point to be active. Need to go over some items with a co-worker? Avoid booking the conference room, and plan a walking meeting outside or around the building. Getting your heartrate

up and taking in some fresh summer air may be just what you need for successful brainstorming on the job. Find motivation in all forms. Seek the help of like-minded individuals who also want to establish healthy routines. Look online for health and fitness blogs from other women who can share their own journeys toward better health. Or, invest in a wearable fitness device that offers a personalized experience, such as a Mira Fitness tracker, that understands your fitness level and offers tips and inspirational boosts relevant to you.

For more information and to check out their blog visit www.mymirafit.com. Plan for an active vacation. Don’t let travel plans justify inactivity. Use your vacation as an opportunity to get moving, and create new healthy experiences. Visiting a historic town or city? Check out a walking group tour to sightsee. Hitting the beach? Try beach volleyball, surfing or stroll beside the water every night. No matter where your travels take you, you can always find a way to be active. Find ways to beat the heat. Don’t

let the summer sun be your excuse to stay indoors on those extra hot days. Set your alarm early to get your morning run or hike in before those afternoon temperatures rise. Seek a refreshing, cool workout, such as water aerobics at the gym or paddle boarding at the lake when the temps are soaring. Let the inviting sun rays lure you outside and get moving. You may discover your next favorite workout, and other life hacks for a healthier you. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Segerstrom Center Salutes Local Business Leaders

The Newport News

Stephanie Watts, “Aretha”, Nancy Muth, Dee Higby, Photo by Segerstrom Center for the Arts held its second annual Arts and Business Kimberly April Leadership Awards Dinner fundraiser to support Center education and community engagement programs; the event raised $300,000. The evening included a networking cocktail party, dinner and awards in Samueli Theater, a performance of the hit Broadway show Motown the Musical in Segerstrom Hall and a post-performance cast party hosted by Scott’s Restaurant and Bar. This year, the Center honored Rick J. Muth, president, ORCO Block & Hardscape, with the Distinguished Leader Award and Andrew Y. Low, vice president and senior director, BNY Mellon Wealth Management, with the Rising Leader Award. The event was chaired by the co-chairs of the Center’s Business Leadership Committee: John L. Ginger, Board Chairman of the Center’s Board of Directors and CEO of J. Ginger Masonry and William F. Meehan, partner, Rutan and Tucker and a Center board member. The room was decorated in great detail with a “Motown” feel, from the decorations on the table to the music, everyone was transported back to when Berry Gordy launched musical greats such as Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. John Ginger opened the evening’s awards presentations remarking, “When a community fosters a strong arts sector, neighborhoods transform, attracting new businesses and bright minds. Creativity flourishes, creating Andrew Low and Bill Meehan, Photo by Doug Gifford a vibrant, lively culture fueling an unstoppable economic engine. We are lucky to have such vibrancy here in Orange County, thanks to the support of the business leaders in this room tonight and, especially, our honorees, Rick Muth and Andrew Low.” While introducing Rick Muth, John Ginger noted, “Rick’s efforts have contributed significantly toward building Orange County’s thriving arts economy and, quite literally, toward building the Center itself.” Accepting his award, Muth said, “The reason we are here is to raise funds for the enrichment of our community by community education and leadership for our community. We give entertainment for a laugh, for the soul, for relaxation, to give us knowledge of other persons, persuasions and people from different nations.” As he introduced Andrew Low, who has two young daughters, Bill Meehan said, “Recognizing the importance of the arts to all families in our community, Andrew sought ways to get involved more closely with the Center. He recognizes the Center’s deep commitment to education and children, and that endeavor is near and dear to his heart.” “As a child,” said, Low, “I did not have any background in the arts. Then, in middle school, I was exposed to the violin, orchestra and drama, and it made me come alive! In working with teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds, I have seen how they blossom, and some come out of their shells. The arts bring out the joy and sparkle in their eyes. They emerge with confidence. Rick Muth and Andrew Low, John Ginger and Rick Muth, Yes, academics help, athletics help, but the arts help them become alive!” Photo by Doug Gifford After the awards program, everyone was escorted over to see a Photo by Kimberly April performance of the hit Broadway show Motown the Musical in Segerstrom Hall. After the performance, a post-performance cast party hosted by Scott’s Restaurant and Bar was enjoyed by everyone. Dancing went on until almost midnight with the cast and VIP’s in attendance. For more than 30 years, Segerstrom Center for the Arts has brought arts programs to schools and community events throughout Orange County. It is the leading provider of arts education programs of any not-for-profit arts organization on the West Coast, reaching nearly 300,000 young people, adults and educators each year in six California counties. In addition to providing opportunities to enhance knowledge of and appreciation for the arts, when Center programs are integrated by teachers into their daily classroom lessons, they also deepen learning experiences and improve academic achievement for their students. In the years ahead, the Center plans to build upon its role as a civic partner and establish new cultural, educational and community partnerships to enhance its capacity to serve all of Orange County’s many diverse communities. Proceeds from the Arts and Business Leadership Awards Dinner will help make these many programs possible while also ensuring they are accessible to every young person in Orange County. First Win for Jamie Barge and Luebbo in the $30,000 Summer Festival Grand Prix

Barge and Luebbo celebrate their first grand prix win Rain loomed over the grounds of the Del Mar Horse Park as the $30,000 Summer Festival Grand Prix, presented by SmartPak, got underway. It drizzled throughout the class, but the weather didn’t stop Jamie Barge on Kylieco’s Luebbo from earning her first Grand Prix win. Due to the rain, the jumps for the Grand Prix were moved to ground that had not been used for previous classes. Although only 20 of the original 32 entries ventured out onto the wet course, the footing held up well. FEI course designer Ivan Tagle presented a few tight rollbacks with options to go wider, kept the height to standard, and focused on the technical aspects. The eighth element on the course, a vertical-oxer-vertical triple combination, and the final jump, a big airy oxer with lots of flowers, were the trouble spots. Only five pairs made it to the jump-off, and just two of those went double clean. After the first three jump-off attempts scored one rail each, Nick Hein Ruus rode Big Red (Gerardo Pasquel, owner) double clear in 51.06. Last to go, Barge had the Page 12

advantage of knowing what she had to do for the win. Shaving corners just a touch and taking advantage of her horse’s big step, she crossed the timers clean in 44.41. Young yet determined, Barge has made a name for herself on the California grand prix circuit. Earning a spot in several jump-offs and consistently bringing home ribbons, the big win had eluded her for a couple of seasons. Most recently, she finished 3rd in the Markel Insurance Grand Prix at the Blenheim Red, White, and Blue Classic on Kylieco’s Lasse and was second in Friday’s Markel Insurance Grand Prix with Luebbo. She has been riding Luebbo, a 10-year-old Oldenberg, for two years now and she loves his ‘I’ll do my best’ attitude. “I still can’t believe it,” she said of her win. “My horse has been good this week, jumping really well. I’m really proud of him today.” When asked if she considered scratching the class, she replied, “Honestly, yes! I almost scratched before I went in. And I thought, you know what, I’ll jump the first jump, see how I feel,” she explained. “I went in

The Newport News

and he took me right to the first jump. So then I thought, okay I guess we’re going.” On this date last year, Barge’s coach Gabby Salick won this same grand prix, making the victory today that much sweeter. Starting tomorrow, Blenheim EquiSports welcomes the US Junior Hunter National Championship, West Coast. Classes commence for

Nick Hein Ruus and Big Red

the Showpark Racing Festival on Wednesday, with a $7,500 CashCall Mortage U25 Qualifier on Friday, a $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on Saturday and the $40,000 Racing Festival Grand Prix, presented by the EQ Almanac, on Sunday. Photos by : CapturedMomentPhoto.com

PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated (approved) The Newport

News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons

and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising. 8. Extremely Affordable Classified Advertising Only a Dollar a Word.

In keeping with our motto of providing highly fact if advertising at an affordable cost, the Newport News offers weekly classified advertising for only $1.00 a word with a 15 word minimum. You’re very welcome! 9.What does Good News mean to you? Most other news media is full of crime, war, celebrity scandals, and other kinds of bad news. We guarantee that when you place your advertising in the Newport News your ad will never be next to any kind of bad news. Our unusual but extremely delightful editorial policy of only printing good, positive family-friendly news makes reading this newspaper a pleasure. Keeping our readers happy keeps them in a pleasant mood when they are reading your advertising message. 10. Silent Salesman Works for you Seven Days a Week Our surveys show that the Newport News has more “coffee table life” with readers keeping a copy of the newspaper in their homes as long as a full week which is far longer than any daily publication. If you’d like to see a little excitement in your sales figures, place a call to Newport News for fast action on advertising that is effective, attractive, and affordable. Ask for one of our cheerful display advertising representatives to put some real power in your advertising when you call (949)-589-9990
