31st Annual Dana Point Tall Ships Festival This weekend
September 12-13, 2015. Sunset Parade Friday September 11. Every September the Dana Point Harbor becomes a forest of towering masts, billowing sails, and stately wooden ships in early September during the annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival, the largest gathering of historic sailing ships on the
West Coast. www.tallshipsfestival.com The Toshiba Tall Ships Festival started in 1984 and is the Ocean Institute’s premier annual event, drawing thousands to Dana Point’s beautiful harbor. This festival celebrates the return of the brig Pilgrim from her annual summer sail as an ambassador of good will for the City of Dana Point and the Ocean Institute. Equally important, the festival highlights the community’s rich cultural heritage as chronicled in Richard Henry Dana’s classic American novel, “Two Years Before the Mast”, when the Pilgrim explored and traded along this coastline in the early days while California was still owned by Mexico The brig Pilgrim and the other tall ships of her era represent an important chapter in our nation’s history. This era represents history’s last large-scale technological transportation system whose fabrication and implementation had little or no carbon footprint. In evoking the history, heritage, and romance of the Age of Sail, Tall Ship festivals also symbolize the capacity of humanity to achieve world-changing developments through the use of sustainable technologies. About the Ocean Institute The Ocean Institute has become nationally known for its hands-on marine science, environmental education and maritime history
programs. More than 115,000 K-12 students and 8,000 teachers annually participate in the Institute’s 61 award-winning, immersion style programs. The Institute is primarily an educational facility specializing in innovative marine and social science programs. 24200 Dana Point Harbor Dr. Dana Point, CA 92629. 949.496.2274 www.ocean-institute.org About Tall Ships America: The Tall Ships Challenge Series Tall Ships America’s TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® is an annual series that rotates on a three-year cycle between the Atlantic Coast, Great Lakes and the Pacific Coast. Since 2001, Tall Ships America has coordinated more than 87 TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® events in 54 cities, attracting more than 22 million visitors and stimulating in excess of $1.8 billion in aggregate economic and tourism activity for the host ports. Founded in 1973, Tall Ships America serves as the hub for tall ship activity, expertise, and information in North America, and is commended by Congress as the National Sail Training organization representing the United States in the international forum. In addition to organizing the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® Series, Tall Ships America supports the people, ships and programs of sail training through grants, scholarships, conferences, education, publications, and public events and advocacy.

Registration Now Open for Orange County Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19 Orange County Coastkeeper expects thousands to gather to pick up trash across 91 miles of coastline. Orange County residents can now sign up to participate in Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19. Volunteers across the state head to California’s coast and inland waters by the thousands to lend their hands in support of clean beaches and waterways. This year, Orange County Coastkeeper and Jim Meyer with Trails4All take on all 42-cleanup sites in Orange County—organizing site captains and volunteer registration. The cleanup efforts help collect trash and debris from sites spanning across 91 miles of coastline. Last year, 7,053 Orange County volunteers collected more than 67,000 pounds of trash and recyclable materials during the three-hour event. With increased awareness about the impact of water pollution, Coastkeeper aims to beat that mark this year. “Most people don’t think about their personal impact on pollution until they see items lying on the sand that they throw away every day,” says Courtney James, Orange County Coastkeeper ’s coastal cleanup director. “It is nothing short of inspiring to see thousands of people cleaning our waters and realizing that they can influence the future of our natural environment.” Vast amounts of debris litter the world’s waters causing harm to
oceans, wildlife, coastal economies and beach-goers. Beaches serve as collecting spots for trash that travels from city streets and highways via inland waterways, storm drains, sewers and on the wind. Beach cleanups stand as a last line of defense to prevent debris from entering the ocean. Coastkeeper aspires to accomplish a zero-waste event and asks that volunteers bring their own cleanup supplies including a bucket or reusable bag, gloves and reusable water bottle. In addition to volunteering, residents and businesses can support Coastal Cleanup Day with donations and sponsorships. To register for Coastal Cleanup Day and find the site closest to you, visit www.coastkeeper.org/ccd. For more information, contact Courtney
James at courtney@coastkeeper. org. ORANGE COUNTY COASTKEEPER: Founded in 1999, the mission of Coastkeeper is to protect and promote sustainable water resources that are swimmable, drinkable, and fishable. Coastkeeper is a nonprofit clean water organization that serves as a proactive steward of our fresh- and saltwater ecosystems. We work collaboratively with diverse groups in the public and private sectors to achieve healthy, accessible, and sustainable water resources for the region. We implement innovative, effective programs in education, advocacy, restoration, research, enforcement, and conservation. For more information, visit www. coastkeeper.org or call 714-8501965.

Sharpen Students’ Minds with Proper Nutrition Bells will soon be ringing, and parents may experience a sense of déjà vu for the first several weeks of school. That’s because the early part of each new school year is commonly spent reversing the effect of “summer brain drain” – when kids lose skills they mastered the previous year. According to a recent survey by DSM Nutritional Products and Pop Warner, 78 percent of parents are concerned about students’ difficulties retaining what they learned in school throughout the summer. A majority of surveyed parents understand the role of nutrition in physical and academic performance, but don’t make the connection to nutrition’s role in preventing brain drain. While many parents encourage their children to take vitamins and minerals to supplement nutrition, nearly half admit they aren’t clear about which nutrients support children’s brain health. What’s more, maintaining a well-rounded and healthy diet and taking vitamins and other essential nutrients that support brain health ranked significantly lower than other strategies parents use to prevent brain drain, such as sports and academic activities. Nutrition plays an important role in brain health year-round, says Elizabeth Somer, a nationally acclaimed registered dietitian, nutritionist and author. To help keep your students’ minds sharp as they head back to school, consider these tips from Somer: Eat fatty fish twice a week for dinner or supplement omega-3s. Omega-3s are highly concentrated in the brain and important to brain health, yet according to research published in the British Medical Journal, the average American diet contains less omega-3s from seafood than most other developed countries. Children and adults
should get the recommended two servings of fatty fish, such as salmon, per week. Offer a variety of healthy food options in the house. Giving children choices teaches them to take care of their bodies and empowers them to make better food decisions in the future. Stock the kitchen with lots of colorful fruits and vegetables, such as baby carrots, berries and bananas for snacks, and broccoli, green peas and mashed sweet potatoes for dinner. The nutrients in these foods are important for the brain. Along with calcium, low-fat milk supplies vitamin D, which is a nutrient essential for brain development.

Consider taking a multivitamin. No one eats perfectly. It is important to talk with your physician or registered dietitian about whether you or your children could benefit from a multivitamin. According to research published in The Journal of Nutrition, only 10 percent of Americans get the nutrients they need from their food, and supplementation can help fill that gap. Ribs, Pigs and Watermelon Raises $50,000 for American Family Housing As we say goodbye to summer and another season of spectacular things to do along the Southern California coast, American Family Housing’s 4th annual fundraiser, Ribs, Pigs and Watermelons Professional BBQ Competition and Summer Festival, is sure to be remembered for its feel-good cause and unique theme of events that attracted thousands to Huntington State Beach during the August 7-9 weekend. Shedding light and a little lightheartedness on a somber subject, the non-profit organization teamed up with a long list of loyal sponsors to pull off a culinary extravaganza that raised awareness and critical funds to support homeless adults and families in Orange, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties. With over fifty professional BBQ teams filling a quarter-mile stretch of the State Beach parking lot alongside the boardwalk, the event engulfed the beach with that unmistakable smell of spicy barbeque smoke and the powerful scent of craft beers, raising over $50,000 for American Family Housing programs that provide an array of urgently needed social services and affordable housing options to vulnerable populations facing barriers to housing stability. Sponsors of the event included Yelp OC, Southwest Material Handling, Inc., OC Mazda, Rainbow Environmental Services, Chef Jason Fullilove, Hub International, US Bank and BJ’s Brewhouse, who provided all of the handcrafted sodas and beers for guests. Sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society, the event attracted top nationally ranked BBQ teams -- including teams from the TLC reality television show BBQ Pitmasters -- who competed for the $10,000 grand prize while cooking up some savory meats for the hungry crowds. The winning teams included Grand Champion Pig Skin BBQ from Iowa and Reserved Grand Champion Hickory & Spice from Tustin, Calif. The People’s Choice Award, determined by the public in attendance, went to Twisted Brisket from Costa Mesa, Calif. The best tastings throughout the weekend included bacon candy, moink balls—an all-beef meatball wrapped in bacon—ribs, chicken, tri-tip, brisket, sausage, bacon-flavored kettle corn and cotton candy and more. Thousands of pounds of watermelon were on hand for consuming, with competitions attracting children and adults alike. On Saturday afternoon, families joined in for the Kids Que, an event that allowed children ages 6 to 15 to compete in their own BBQ competition. Parents stood by as their children barbequed burgers and steaks. Team “Brenden’s Smokin’ Hart” won the 6 to 10-year-old division and team “Jayden’s Smokin’ Hart” won the 11 to 15-year-old division. Guests who wanted a home-on-the-range experience had the unusual opportunity to compete in cow-milking contests, and for those who were less apt to get their faces and hands dirty, a classic car show provided an atmosphere of old-fashioned fun. Without a doubt, the eating contests provided the most entertainment for both participants, who got to stuff their faces, and the bystanders who watched in shock and awe. People truly ate their hearts out, devouring ribs and watermelon in record time. Later, they got a chance to dance it all off with live music from some great local bands that included the American Vagrants, Rockaholics, and Maureen and the Mercury 5. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated
(approved) The Newport News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people
of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising.

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pay as you go or pre-pay your order or get an extra 15% off. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona Del Mar and Newport Coast? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

5 Ways to Save Money on School Gear Families are working to stretch their back-to-school shopping budgets further this year, according to a recent survey by the National Retail Foundation. But saving money isn’t just about how much you spend on supplies; it’s also about making school supplies and equipment last as long as possible. Here are some tips for protecting your students’ school gear to help stretch your budget – and their gear: Talk with children about handling tech devices. Kids will be kids, and sometimes that means they’ll be tough on their stuff. Unfortunately, their school-mandated tech devices – such as calculators, tablets and laptops – can’t always take the beating. To reduce the risk of accidental breakage, talk to kids about proper handling and storage of their devices and the potential risks for breakage when drops, spills and hard impacts occur. Lighten the backpack load. Between books and laptops, students tend to pack a lot of heavy items in their backpacks during the course of a school year. As the load increases, backpack zippers may break, and seams may tear from the daily stress. Reduce the wear and tear by ensuring your kids don’t over-pack their bags. Not only will this reduce strain on their backpacks, it will lighten the load on
students’ backs as well. Consider a protection plan. Research shows that some school essentials – such as backpacks and laptop batteries – break or stop functioning within the first 1-2 years of use. To help keep costs down, many retailers offer reputable protection plans, such as SIMPLR, which can help repair or replace the equipment for free or a fraction of what you’d normally pay on your own. Sharing isn’t always caring. Even if your child handles his calculator or

until funds become available to the payee or endorsee as a matter of right. The property offered for sale excludes all funds held on account by the property receiver, if applicable. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. Notice to Potential Bidders If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a Trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a Trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same Lender may hold more than one mortgage or Deed of Trust on the property. Notice to Property Owner The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the Mortgagee, Beneficiary, Trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about Trustee Sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call In Source Logic at 702-659-7766 for information regarding the Trustee’s Sale or visit the Internet Web site address listed below for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, CA08001562-15-1. laptop with care, his friends might not. Establish guidelines with your kids at the start of the school year about what items can be shared with others at school and which cannot. For those things that can be shared, consider encouraging your child to establish ground rules when sharing with friends. Guidelines could include when the item should be returned, tasks for which the item will be used and an understanding that items will be handled with care. Don’t forget about bikes. Kids
who ride their bikes to school can be just as hard on their bikes as they are on their school supplies. A tuneup at the start of the school year can keep the bike running smoothly and help catch wear and tear, such as damaged spokes or worn tires and brake pads.
