com were a top priority. Whether viewing the site on a desktop computer, a smartphone or even a tablet, the responsive design allows users to have an experience that is optimized regardless of the device being used. “With this project, our team wanted to offer Balboa Island visitors and residents a site they could easily use and conveniently access from whatever devices best suited their lifestyle,” said Hart. Not only is the new BalboaIsland. com responsive for optimized mobile viewing, but its design includes a new layout and content strategy. This data-driven approach allows users of the site to easily access the most commonly requested and popular features such as such as vacation rentals, events, dining, and transportation options. “An exclusive destination, Balboa Island offers a luxury lifestyle experience unlike any other and it
needed a website to set the tone,” said Hart. “California visitors have no shortage of attractions to enjoy, but the experience afforded by Balboa Island is unique. We wanted to design a web presence that would attract visitors and potential residents as well as businesses to this exclusive community to support and promote tourism and economic development in the area.” According to the most recent data from the California Travel and Tourism Commission, total direct travel spending in the state was $106.4 billion in 2012, a 4.5 percent increase from 2011 spending. Side-splitting Laughs: One Man, Two Guvnors Opens South Coast Repertory’s Season
Laughter will be on tap in South Coast Repertory’s season-opener, One Man, Two Guvnors by Richard Bean, with songs by Grant Olding. The raucously funny show has earned praise from audiences and critics alike during performances in London (West End), New York (Broadway) and the West Coast (Berkeley Repertory Theatre). David Ivers directs the production on the Segerstrom Stage, Sept. 11-Oct. 11. Tickets are now available at www. scr.org. One Man, Two Guvnors is a comedy of mistaken identity. Francis, a failed washboard musician with an insatiable appetite, has to keep his two jobs secret from his two bosses… and they’re hiding a few secrets of their own. Set in swinging ‘60s England, to the tune of a live band, anything can happen (and probably will) in this hilarious show. The play is a co-production with Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Ivers said he is drawn to One Man, Two Guvnors because “the world of farce and physical comedy marries precision with being a child, with childishness innocence, purity and total youthful exuberance with a kind of virtuosity. This is a really visceral, energetic, stupid-in-the-best-way, frolicking mess, with rock-and-roll supporting this absolutely insane, wonderful, chaotic world.” Ivers is artistic director of the Utah Shakespeare Festival, where he has been creating productions as director and actor since 1992. In recent seasons, he has directed Twelfth Night, Twelve Angry Men, Romeo and Juliet and Cyrano De Bergerac, among others. He spent 10 years as a resident artist with the
Denver Center Theatre Company and he helmed a premiere adaptation of The Cocoanuts for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. His other regional work includes productions at Pioneer Theatre Company, the Alabama and Idaho Shakespeare Festivals, Portland Center Stage, Artists Repertory Theatre and Tacoma Actors Guild. Bean was a bread maker, studied psychology, became a psychologist and then a stand-up comic all before turning to playwriting. He found inspiration for One Man, Two Guvnors in an 18th-century Italian farce by Carlo Goldoni, The Servant of Two Masters. Among the awards Bean’s plays have received are the 2011 Evening Standard Award for Best Play for The Heretic and One Man, Two Guvnors and the 2011 Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play and 2012 Whatsonstage.com Award for Best New Comedy, both for One Man, Two Guvnors. His other work includes a stage version of David Mamet’s The House of Games; The English Game; and In the Club, a version of Molière’s The Hypochondriac. His radio plays include “Of Rats and Men,” “Yesterday,” “Unsinkable” and “Robin Hood’s Revenge.” The cast for One Man, Two Guvnors includes William Connell, Brad Culver, Dan Donohue, JohnDavid Keller, Louis Lotorto, Becca Lustgarten, Gerry McIntyre, Sarah Moser, Todd Pivetti, Helen Sadler, Danny Scheie, A.J. Sclafani, Steven Shear, Robert Sicular and Claire Warden. Musicians Casey Hurt, Mike McGraw, Marcus Högsta and Andrew Niven perform as the band called The Craze. The design and creative team
includes Gregg Coffin, music director; Hugh Landwehr, scenic design; Meg Neville, costume design; Alexander V. Nichols, lighting design; and Lindsay Jones, sound design; Gerry McIntyre, musical staging; and Joanne DeNaut, CSA, and Amy Potozkin, CSA, casting. The production manager is Joshua Marchesi and the stage manager is Jennifer Ellen Butler. One Man, Two Guvnors is generously supported by Honorary Producers Joan and Andy Fimiano. The Corporate Honorary Producer is US Bank. The media partner is Orange Coast magazine. Tickets start at $22. Discounts are available for full-time students, patrons 25 years of age and under, fulltime educators, seniors and groups of 10 or more. For complete information, visit: www.scr.org. Related Information for One Man, Two Guvnors Tickets: May be purchased online at www.scr.org, by phone at (714) 708-5555 or by visiting the Box Office at 655 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa. Performances run Sept. 11Oct. 11. Ticket prices start at $22. Low-priced previews run Sept. 11-17.

Good Vision Helps Children Excel in School
With children heading back to school soon, parents’ to-do lists keep getting longer – shopping for clothes, shoes and supplies, going to the doctor for yearly physicals or checkups, and making appointments at the dentist, among other things. What is easily forgotten or put off is a yearly eye exam. According to a survey conducted by KRC Research on behalf of Think About Your Eyes, about 60 percent of parents do not consider eye exams as a necessary part of children’s health checkup schedule. However, skipping these exams means children run the risk of being unprepared for
school with an undiagnosed vision problem or eye disease. While a cough or hurt ankle might trigger you to take your child to the doctor without hesitation, eye problems are difficult to notice without proactive measures. In fact, 84 percent of parents in the same survey admitted they wait for a child to complain of a vision issue before taking them in for an eye exam. Children, however, especially those who have had vision problems for an extended amount of time, aren’t always able to recognize the problem themselves. Although some schools perform

yearly vision screenings, it is important for parents to know that these tests only gauge a child’s ability to see at a distance. A full vision screening from an eye care professional is needed to evaluate how well a child’s eyes function and how well they focus on items closer to the face. With increased up-close reading, such as that required when using a computer, this information is becoming more critical. The American Optometric Association estimates that as much as 80 percent of what children learn – reading, writing, computer work and day-to-day observation – happens through sight, so it’s more important now than ever to have children tested by an optometrist. According to the American Optometric Association, by age six (before they start school), children should receive at least three eye exams. If you find that your child does need glasses, the experts at Essilor offer these tips for selecting the right eyeglass lenses: • Bright reflections and glare can cause irritation, eye strain, discomfort and damage to your child’s eyes. In addition to the right prescription, it is important to purchase lenses that protect against these visual
distractions. Lenses such as Crizal Kids UV lenses offer protection from glare caused by sunlight, whiteboards, fluorescent lights, computer screens and video games. • Skin isn’t the only part of the body that needs protection from the sun’s harsh UV rays. Choose lenses that shield the eye from UV exposure, in addition to taking other preventative measures against sun exposure. • Just like anything else you buy for your child, glasses need to stand up to the test of time. Sturdy frames are important, but the lenses inside your child’s frames are vulnerable and need protection as well. Lenses that are scratch and impact resistant will help ensure a clear line of sight. Some lenses for children, such as Crizal Kids UV No-Glare lenses, also help repel water and smudges, making it easier to weather everyday wear and tear. With the variety of options available, you can easily find the right lenses for your child’s vision needs. Young Jumper Champions Crowned at Showpark All Seasons Tournament Blenheim EquiSports is pleased to host the Young Jumper Championships Western League Finals again this year. After three rounds, one on Thursday, one Friday and the last one today, three young champions in three age divisions rose to the top of the results. Jamie Sailor and Flashdance Capture the Win in the Five-Year-Old Division After Thursday and Friday’s qualifying rounds, all ten entries returned for the final round. Two of the ten, Michelle Parker and Cross Creek Farm’s U.S. Warmblood gelding CCF Yasur (Ocean I x Andiamo), along with Jamie Sailor and Felyn Farm’s Hanoverian gelding Flashdance (For Edition x Quinar), jumped through all three rounds fault free. The two talented five-year-olds returned for a jump-off to determine the winner. First in, Parker and CCF Yasur had an unfortunate refusal at fence 1. With the early morning shadows stretched out in front of the vertical, the young horse was unsure until he took a closer look. They finished with a nineteen fault score and time of 55.37. Sailor guided Flashdance smoothly around the course, securing her win with a clear round and an efficient time of 39.84. Danielle Matlock bred Flashdance. Making their YJC debut together, Sailor, assistant trainer at Mike Edrick Stables, and Flashdance, share a strong bond. “We’ve had him since he was three; I broke him,” she explained. “He knows his job. We hardly even school him at home. He loves the show ring and that’s where he will stay!” Michelle Parker and CCF Caramel Are Sweet in the Six-Year-Olds Out of the 24 entries in the sixyear-old division, the 15 who had accumulated the least amount of faults were invited back for the final round. One third of those who returned had a score of zero after jumping clean rounds on Thursday and Friday. By the end of the third round, Emily Esau Williams with Dayla Fischer’s Dutch mare Eranka B (Zacharov TN x Padinus), and Michelle Parker riding Dana Nemeth’s U.S. Warmblood mare CCF Caramel (Durango LS x Contango), remained fault free, which led to another jump-off, this time with two talented young females.
Michelle Parker and CCF Caramel
Jamie Sailor and Flashdance Williams and Eranka B laid down a speedy time of 35.96, but with an unlucky four faults at the in of the combination (8a). Knowing what she had to do, Parker skillfully guided her mare, finishing clean and quick in 36.31 for the title of 2015 YJC Western League Six-Year-Old Champion. Parker, thrilled with the win, explained why Caramel is truly part of the Cross Creek Farms family. “My mom, Carol, bred her. I competed on both the dam and sire. The dam was a grand prix horse I had, this was her only foal. The sire I had for a short period of time as a six-year-old, he is a Darco x Chin Chin.” This pair will also compete in the upcoming Blenheim EquiSports $15,000 Six Year Old Young Horse Finals at the Blenheim International Jumping Festival at Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park at San Juan Capistrano. Nathalie Manning and Doriena Secure the Seven-Year-Old Title Having the same qualifying format as the other YJC divisions, 15 of the 20 seven-year-old entries returned for the third round. Only one entry had
zero faults coming into the final day, Misti Cassar and the spotted Selle Francais stallion, Little Indian. The third round changed the top spots a touch. Peter Petschenig with Consider 5 (Pam Bilek & Peter Petschenig, owners), Nathalie Manning and Doriena (owned by Idyllic Imports), and Kasey Ament with Soren Z (owned by KC Jump, LLC), came in with four faults each and all jumped clean in Round 3. Last to go, Cassar and Little Indian, with a score of zero, were unfortunately eliminated due to two refusals. The aforementioned four fault scores were tied and returned for a jump-off to determine the top three placings. Blazing the way with a fast time of 36.46, Petschenig and the Holsteiner stallion Consider 5 (Converter x Landor S), set a tough standard for the rest to match. Manning and the Dutch mare Doriena (Canturano x Grosso Z), executed a handy and clean jump-off track, taking the lead in a time of 35.09. Last in, Kasey Ament and the Zangersheide stallion Soren Z (Sandro Boy x Carthago), ultimately finished in third place with a 4 fault score, in a time of 37.00.
Appreciative, Manning mentioned those that made this win possible. “I am fortunate to have some wonderful clients, Idyllic Imports, who have brought in two horses for me to ride. We bought Doriena about eight months ago,” she said. “She’s a really sweet mare on the ground, super cuddly, and she always tries hard. I’ve been fortunate enough to have Michelle Parker, Alex Alvarado, and Sal Alvarado help me. I want to thank my whole Acorn Farm team - the horses, grooms, family and friends.” Manning is also going to compete at the Blenheim International Jumping Festival in the Blenheim EquiSports $20,000 Seven Year Old Young Horse Finals in just under three weeks. Congratulations to all competitors on a superb week of showing at the Showpark All Seasons Tournament. Blenheim EquiSports moves back to San Juan Capistrano in September for two consecutive shows to wrap up their California season, the Blenheim Fall Tournament and the Blenheim International Jumping Festival. 19th Stars & Stripes Tournament with Sammy Hagar Raises Over $2.8 Million for Orange County Youth Organizations With Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Sammy Hagar providing a hard-rocking soundtrack, Stars & Stripes tournament organizers reeled in a record-setting amount of over $2.8 million for Orange County children’s charities at its 19th annual fishing, golf and music fundraiser in Mexico, breaking the 2014 record of $2.7 million. More than 600 philanthropically minded participants reeled, putted and rocked to support five Orange County youth organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, Miracles For Kids, Orangewood Children’s Foundation, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Orange County, and HomeAid Orange County. The four-day festival, held June 25-28 at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort in Mexico, pushed the figure of total funds raised since 1997 to $22+ million - more than any other fishing tournament benefiting children’s charities in the United States. This year’s sponsors included SASCO, the Honda Center and the Anaheim Ducks. “We have people coming back every year to participate Board Chairman and Founder Dick Gebhard said. “But most of all, participants and sponsors get – and stay – involved because Stars & Stripes exists to help improve the lives of young people and their families. It’s all about the kids for us.” An elected, volunteer board of directors, “The Knights,” manages the event along with Gebhard, which includes members Tim Ryan, CEO of the Honda Center and executive vice president of the Anaheim Ducks, Al Baldwin, chairman at Baldwin and Sons, Jeff Cunningham, senior vice president of Construction Management Services at Shea Properties, Larry Kirkenslager, senior vice president of pre-construction for Sasco Electric Inc., and Charles Ruck, partner at Latham & Watkins LLP. As a Stars & Stripes beneficiary, charities not only receive much-needed financial assistance to expand their programs but also increase public awareness about their cause through the Stars & Stripes network. Gebhard came up with the idea when he was a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. He wanted to create a fundraiser unlike any other by combining fishing, golfing and music. He came up with the unique event title to emphasize the youth stars helped by tournament fundraising as well as the striped marlin found in the Sea of Cortez. “There’s nothing like Stars & Stripes. Its friends and supporters are some of the most committed philanthropists in Orange County and beyond,” said Melissa Beck, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. At sunrise each day of the tournament, anglers launched into the abundant waters off the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, a fertile environment for plenty of sport-fish species. The Sea of Cortez also provided the backdrop for golfers playing at the 18-hole, par 72 Chileno Bay Golf Course, The festival has developed a reputation for attracting famed musicians and bands to perform at the signature Saturday night dinner, during which fishing and golfing awards are presented. This year topped previous expectations, with Sammy Hagar ¬playing a concert on the beach with Cabo Uno. Known to fans as the Red Rocker, Hagar is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee responsible for some of the greatest rock anthems ever written. The Stars & Stripes tournament, benefiting youth charities since 1997, is a world-class charity fundraiser that combines spectacular deep-sea fishing and golf on Mexico’s finest courses with beautiful accommodations and top-notch musical entertainment. The hugely popular event has raised and donated more than $22 million to youth charities over its 19-year history, and creates lasting memories for the organizations it assists. Page 10

troops, police officers, firefighters, first responders, and citizens will unite. Close to 50 races across the globe are planned for 2015, with half of net proceeds benefiting the Travis Manion Foundation, which helps families of the fallen, veterans, and active duty troops. The remaining 50 percent will be redistributed to local charities, including the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group. About the 9/11 Heroes Run The 9/11 Heroes Run was inspired by Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion’s visit to Rescue Team One in New York City shortly before his second
and final combat deployment. Travis, who was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor for the courage he displayed under fire, was killed by an enemy sniper in Fallujah, Iraq, on April 29, 2007. After her only son’s death, Travis’ mother, Janet Manion, founded the Travis Manion Foundation with a mission of honoring the fallen by challenging the living. The 9/11 Heroes Run is one of the Foundation’s pillar programs, which also include Honor the Fallen initiatives and the Character Does Matter leadership program. PAY LESS TO ADVERTISE TO REACH THE HIGH INCOME HOMEOWNERS OF NEWPORT BEACH, BALBOA, CORONA DEL MAR, AND NEWPORT COAST WHO WOULD LIKE TO BUY FROM YOU 1. Newport News Readers can afford your very best! According to reliable sources such as the U.S. census bureau the area served by the Newport News is one of Orange County’s highest income groups. These affluent nearby homeowners in Newport Beach, Balboa, Corona del Mar, and Newport Coast have more money to spend and the time to spend it. Make sure that these readers are aware of your company and what you do by keeping a regular, affordable advertising message in the newspaper that all of them read every week 2.Why pay more to reach your most preferred customers? Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the most expensive advertising is advertising that doesn’t work. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would bring you customers. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in Newport News? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like the Newport News which is received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners with advertising that costs you far less money. The Newport News is attractive, effective and affordable. 3. Why do Newport News Readers read the Newport News? Since 1907 The Newport News has been the favorite weekly publication of Newport Beach. On July 15, 1997, the Superior Court of Orange County adjudicated (approved) The Newport
News as the official newspaper for The City of Newport Beach and the County or Orange. That’s why you regularly see stories about the Newport News Chamber of Commerce, and prominent Newport News residents in the Newport News. So when you advertise In the Newport News you get the most popular weekly for Newport Beach readers. 4.U S Post office plus selected delivery makes this newspaper special! While everyone knows that the Newport News is delivered to nearly every single family residence in Newport Coast by the United States Post office, the Newport News is also hand-delivered each week to local Newport News area businesses, professional offices, library, and several centrally located news racks other popular gathering spots where Newport News residents can easily pick up a copy. 5.Who is this woman that raises hundreds of millions of dollars and how can she help me grow my business? If you don’t know her already, get to know Kelly Bennett, the top society columnist in Orange County. She also has the top rated radio show and television program “Breakfast with Gary and Kelly. Readers eagerly await her weekly column in the Newport News which features major charity events where the beautiful people of Orange County gather for fashionable luncheons
and dinners which regularly raise millions of dollars for worthy causes. Permit us to say that placing your advertising where it is seen by people who can afford to give away millions is the best advertising purchase you will ever make. Read Kelly Bennett’s “Society Scene “column every week in the Newport News and see why. 6. Free Online Advertising Newport News Version each week. While many people still prefer to have a hard copy of the Newport News to hold in their hand, our online version is equally popular for those who want to access our entire newspaper on their smartphone, tablet or computer. Your regular ad will appear in our online edition at no extra charge. Just click on the Thenewportnews.com. 7. How Fast Will this Home be sold? We’d like to share some actual quotes from local Newport News area realtors: BUYERS CAME IN WAVING the ad that appeared in the Newport News.” Two factors determine how fast a house will sell: 1.Choose a skilled real estate professional 2. Advertise it in the Newport News Whether you are selling homes or other desirable goods or services you should consider the Newport News for your advertising. 8. Extremely Affordable Classified Advertising Only a Dollar a Word.
In keeping with our motto of providing highly fact if advertising at an affordable cost, the Newport News offers weekly classified advertising for only $1.00 a word with a 15 word minimum. You’re very welcome! 9.What does Good News mean to you? Most other news media is full of crime, war, celebrity scandals, and other kinds of bad news. We guarantee that when you place your advertising in the Newport News your ad will never be next to any kind of bad news. Our unusual but extremely delightful editorial policy of only printing good, positive family-friendly news makes reading this newspaper a pleasure. Keeping our readers happy keeps them in a pleasant mood when they are reading your advertising message. 10. Silent Salesman Works for you Seven Days a Week Our surveys show that the Newport News has more “coffee table life” with readers keeping a copy of the newspaper in their homes as long as a full week which is far longer than any daily publication. If you’d like to see a little excitement in your sales figures, place a call to Newport News for fast action on advertising that is effective, attractive, and affordable. Ask for one of our cheerful display advertising representatives to put some real power in your advertising when you call (949)-589-9990

Boost Back To School Success with These Breakfast Tips A daily breakfast leads to not only better overall nutrition, but better school performance as well. A simple breakfast at home or school can ensure that your child doesn’t start the day hungry. It also ensures that your child has the nutrients and energy he or she needs during the morning to concentrate on learning. Research shows that kids who eat a morning meal have better memory, attention and behavior, and score higher on tests. Eating a nutritious breakfast is a great way for children to be on target to meet their daily needs for key nutrients, like calcium the bonebuilding mineral found in milk, cheese or yogurt. Children who don’t eat breakfast also are less likely to get all of the essential nutrients they need each day to thrive. Dairy and breakfast go hand in hand. Dairy delivers a unique package of nine essential nutrients in a variety of tasty and affordable options, and dairy protein helps supports healthy muscles while keeping young tummies feeling full until the next meal.
With so many types of milk, cheese and yogurt to choose from, it’s easy for every family member to find their favorite way to start the day with a healthy dose of dairy. Try these ideas to boost school success: • Build a yogurt parfait or whip up a yogurt smoothie, such as this PeachMango and Cereal Smoothie. • Eat pizza for breakfast; it’s sure to put a smile on your kids’ faces. • Build a breakfast burrito bar so kids can create the breakfast they love. Prepare toppings the night before and in the morning, scramble the eggs and warm the tortillas. This school year, call on dairy and breakfast to set your kids up for success in the classroom.
