OCTA Marks Major Milestone by Celebrating 40 Years of Transit Service in Orange County OCTA is celebrating its 40th year of bus service with free bus rides during the week of June 18. In 1972, OCTA began bus service with eight buses along three routes. Forty years later, the agency operates a fleet of 550 buses along 77 routes throughout Orange County. “On a daily basis, there are 170,000 boardings of OCTA buses,” said Paul Glaab, OCTA board chairman and Laguna Niguel mayor. “And we look forward to continuing to serve Orange County by getting our residents and visitors where they need to go for another 40 years.” As part of the anniversary celebration, OCTA is encouraging the community to take part in the Dump the Pump week. From June 18 to June 22, riders can make a pledge online to forgo the gas pump and take a bus, train, carpool, bike, walk or telecommute. Teen overcomes challenges to Win National Beauty Pageant In what appears to be a first throughout the world, an autistic teen has won a national beauty pageant. Rachel Barcellona , who suffers from Asperger’s syndrome, which is an autism spectrum disorder, was crowned Miss Teen American Spirit at the American Spirit Pageants on June 3rd at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. To qualify for the national competition Miss Barcellona had made the round of only 20 contestants who were selected out of over 400 online applicants to participate in the competition. She was selected to represent Florida as Miss Teen Florida Spirit. Rachel is fifteen years old and has worked very hard over the years to overcome her disability. She is a spokesperson for the Center of Autism and Related Disabilities and aspires to become a child psychologist in order to help other children who suffer from autism. She is in the process of writing a children’s book and is a member of the National Honor Society and the drama club. The pageant she won, American Spirit Pageants, is the only national pageant system to incorporate charitable fundraising into the judged competition. Therefore, Rachel was required to raise funds for American Spirit Charities prior to the pageant weekend. At the pageant Rachel won individual competitions for best interview, best swimsuit and best evening gown in the Teen Division. The pageant was hosted by N’Sync’s Chris Kirkpatrick and it was judged by a number of prominent celebrities including: Jason London (“Dazed and Confused”, “Man in the Moon”), Holly Hoffman (“Survivor”), Gia Allemand and Jessie Sulidis (“The Bachelor”, “The Bachelor Pad”), Claudia Lopez (VH1’s “Tough Love”, Christy Hemme (singer, songwriter and professional wrestler), Jessica Black (Miss United States 2010) and others. Rachel hopes to use her crown to focus more attention on autism and on American Spirit Pageants. Page 2

Host Families Needed for High School Exchange Students What if someone told you there was a way to contribute to world peace and expose your family to a new culture without ever leaving your home? Does this sound too good to be true? Each year, Academic Year in America (AYA) offers this opportunity to American families. In 2011, AYA will bring almost 1,000 students age 15 to 181/2 to the United States. With AYA’s tailored matching system, families have the unique opportunity to find a student who will be the perfect fit for their household. Students come from more than 30 countries, such as Germany, Brazil, France, Italy and South Africa and have a multitude of diverse talents and interests. There are several key elements to the hosting experience. For five or 10 months, host families provide their student with two meals a day and a place to sleep and study. Most importantly, they welcome their student into their home as if they were a son or daughter. Students have their own spending money and health insurance. To help facilitate the exchange experiene, host families receive assistance from a AYA Local Coordinator. Five Tips For Selecting The Perfect Wedding Wines By David White The arrival of summer means the arrival of wedding season. For many couples, the walk down the aisle is less daunting than planning the reception. Big or small? What’s the budget? Who gets invited? Will your family be offended if your crazy uncle is asked to stay home? With so many decisions, it’s no wonder that most couples ask their caterer to select the wines. Beware of such a move. While some caterers have great portfolios, most are guilty of outrageous markups on pedestrian wines. Fortunately, selecting the perfect wines for your wedding doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive. Here are five simple tips. 1. Bring Your Own Wine. Many venues will let you bring your own wine and only charge a “corkage fee” for service and stemware. If this is an option, go for it. Carting in your own wine can save lots of money. Earlier this year, two friends whose caterer wanted to charge $25 per bottle asked me for help. We inquired about corkage, and learned that the caterers’ fee was just $8 per bottle. So we visited one of my favorite wine shops and selected four different

wines that averaged out to about $9 each. By skipping the caterer’s wines, my friends saved nearly $1,000. If corkage isn’t an option, don’t be afraid to negotiate. Many caterers have wiggle room in their wine prices. 2. Skip the Champagne. Under European Union trade laws, wine can only be sold as “Champagne” if it comes from the Champagne region of France and is made in the “traditional method,” which is a very expensive process. While real Champagne is a treat, it’s quite expensive -- even “budget” options cost upwards of $35 per bottle. Fortunately, there are plenty of affordable sparkling wines from regions outside Champagne. Consider Cava, a delightful sparker from Spain that’s produced just like Champagne, but using native Spanish grapes. Prosecco, a sparkling wine from Italy that tends to be a bit sweeter, is another option. Many top Cavas and Proseccos can be purchased for around $10 each. After all, no one is going to ask if they’re drinking “real” Champagne while toasting the bride and groom. 3. Avoid the familiar. Napa Valley makes some exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. But it’s nearly impossible to find a decent

bottle for less than $25. Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley produces some lovely Chardonnay, but most cost $20 or more. Fortunately, the world is awash in affordable, great-tasting wine. Finding such wines is as easy as opening up your palate to unheralded regions. 4. Remember the crowd. While values are found outside the wine world’s more popular regions, there’s no sense in terrifying your guests. So avoid esoteric grape varieties and choose wines with wide appeal. Washington State Merlot, for example, is always a great value. Other regions for affordable reds include Chile, France’s Côtes du Rhône, and Italy’s Chianti. For whites, it’s hard to go wrong with a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or South African Chenin Blanc. A rough rule of thumb? Stick to wines with easy-to-pronounce names. Guests won’t be afraid of them. 5. Taste! Most couples consider multiple venues for their reception before deciding where to celebrate. Selecting your wines might not be as important, but the process is typically more fun. If you’re looking for one white and

one red, try to sample at least five or six of each before making your decision. Serve everything blind, pouring the wines from paper bags to mask their prices and where they’re from. Hopefully, you’ll be pleasantly surprised and learn the least expensive option is your favorite. Your wedding is a celebration -- not a wine tasting. Former Angels baseball second baseman and Hall of Famer Bobby Grich came to Laguna Niguel / Mission Viejo Metrolink station on Wednesday afternoon, meeting with enthusiastic fans of the team he once played for three decades ago and waiting with them to board a northbound Angels Express train to the stadium in Anaheim. One of the fans he came across at the station has a special story to tell. Retired Army Maj. Louis Zobel served in World War II, having fought in the Invasion of Normandie in 1944. He earned a Purple Heart after being shot by a sniper in the chest. The Laguna Woods resident also is a Silver Star recipient for his courage under enemy fire. In 1982, Zobel attended an Angels game when Grich played for what was then known as the California

Angels. He recounts his experience from that particular game 30 years ago and how he had hoped to meet Grich himself at the time. “Baltimore played the Angels in 1982. I caught the foul ball that Grich hit, and he got a double,” Zobel said. “I held onto the ball for all this time.” Thirty years later, the World War II veteran, now 91, finally met the man he had been longing to see in person even though Grich retired from baseball only four years after the game that Zobel attended where he caught the ball. Zobel brought with him the ball that he caught 30 years ago along with the original ticket stub from the game – both of which he had longed for Grich to sign throughout the years. “People sometimes talk about professional athletes being heroes,” Grich said. “As a baseball player, I get

hit by a baseball four times a night. [Zobel] was out there all hours of the night in front of bullets and bombs, so you guys are certainly the true heroes of our country – no doubt about it.” OCTA Board Chair and Laguna Niguel Mayor Paul Glaab also echoed Grich’s sentiments. “We certainly recognize his contribution and service to our country,” Glaab said. “We always call out our veterans whenever we can, and it is certainly a great day for Laguna Niguel.” Board Director Patricia Bates and Vice Chairman Greg Winterbottom as well as OCTA CEO Will Kempton also participated in the festivities that concluded with Grich and an estimated 1,100 passengers taking the Angels Express train to the game against the N.Y. Yankees.

‘As You Like It’ Shakespeare in the Japanese gardens The Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles (SCLA), under the artistic direction of Ben Donenberg, returns after 16 years to The Japanese Garden on the grounds of the VA West Los Angeles Healthcare Center Campus with a summer production of William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy “As You Like It,” directed by Royal Shakespeare Company artist Kenn Sabberton – July 10 to 29. The cast is led by Tessa Thompson as Rosalind; she is known for roles on “Veronica Mars,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Heroes” and upcoming BBC America “Copper,” as well as Juliet in “Romeo and Juliet” and Cordelia in “King Lear” here in Los Angeles. Peter Cambor, who played Nate Getz on “NCIS: Los Angeles” plays Orlando; Michael Dorn, well known as the Klingon Lt. Commander Worf from “Star Trek,” plays both Duke Frederick and Duke Senior; Diane Venora, who played Hamlet for the New York Shakespeare Festival, as Jacques; John Lavelle, who played Ben in “The Graduate” on Broadway, as Touchstone; and veteran Los Angeles stage actor Tony Abatemarco as Adam and Corin. The cast also features McKinley Belcher, Kendra Chell, Brian Joseph, Gabriella Rhodeen, Andrew Schwartz, and Lindsay Rae Taylor. Ben Donenberg, Artistic Director of The Shakespeare Center said, “We are returning to the VA grounds to present Shakespeare – this time at the Japanese Garden, one of the loveliest outdoor venues on the West Side. Here we have a chance to enjoy one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, with a great company of wonderful Los Angeles Shakespearean actors, led by a 10-year veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company, complete with live music – an important part of our productions – on a lovely mid-summer evening, with al fresco dining. Additionally this allows us to continue working with Veterans, who will serve as valued members of our backstage and front of house team. Two veterans will also be part of the performing company, and we are making complimentary tickets available to active military personnel and veterans.” The production features original music by Brian Joseph, who wrote original music for the Shakespeare Center’s 2010 production of “Much Ado About Nothing,” featuring Lyle Lovett and Helen Hunt. Director Kenn Sabberton has set the play in present day Los Angeles, where Shakespeare’s court is likened to the corridors of governmental and corporate power and financial influence, and where the events of the day have brought about a sorry and sour state of affairs, stemming from family strife and political maneuverings among the characters. Since this is Shakespeare, after all, the characters repair to the forest. The Forest of Arden has become the local rural orange groves, adjacent farmland, and campgrounds where the characters gather to sing, dance, fall in love, and discuss what is truly important for their own health and the health of mankind – as many Angelinos who regularly enjoy the natural settings that are easily accessible to all who live here. “In Shakespeare, as in life, there is a restorative power of nature and in creating music, dance and song, as a healing force,” said Sabberton. “It is the transformative Shakespearean experience that an audience can enjoy – as audiences have for hundreds of years –under the moon and the stars.” This production brings the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles back to the VA grounds for the first time since 1992. The VA location speaks to many long-time themes of the Shakespeare Center – including presenting Shakespeare in a relevant way through settings that speak to present-day Angelenos, working with veterans, and using theatre as a tool for personal and community transformation. Kenn Sabberton, who directed the 2009 outdoor production of “As You Like It” on the plaza of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, has been an actor, director and teacher for over thirty years. He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for ten years, working in London, Stratford-Upon-Avon and New York. While there, Sabberton was heavily involved with the education department’s school programming, and directed shows for the RSC fringe for which he served as Artistic Director. Sabberton went on to work in London at the Royal National Theatre, followed by the Aquila Theatre Company in New York and the NYU Center for Ancient Studies, where he was responsible for studying, lectur-

ing and researching Shakespeare. During his time with Aquila Theatre Company and the NYU Center for Ancient Studies, Sabberton worked on many Shakespeare productions and was named an associate artist. Most recently, he directed shows in London, which have toured around the United States and played off Broadway. Currently, Sabberton is touring in a production of Bill Naughton’s Alfie, directed by Oliver Award winning director David Thacker. Sabberton is a registered fight director and a registered foster carer, CRB certified to work with Young People. He has taught in many drama schools and has run a number of summer acting schools for children with disabilities. Fashion Show Rave brings in $68k for Friends of Dorothy Guild More than $68,000 was raised at this year’s Friends of Dorothy Guild 5th annual Spring on the Runway Fashion Show Rave that supports AIDS Services Foundation Orange County. The splashy fundraiser, chaired by The Friends of Dorothy Guild founder Barbara Venezia, was held at a warehouse owned by Susie and Kevin Coleman that backs up to the runways of John Wayne Airport used for private aircraft (thus the name of the event). The proceeds brings ‘the Dorothys’ contributions to more than $677,000 for the non profit. Folks were treated to a smorgasbord of dining options from The Meat House, Tommy’s Burgers, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Sundried Tomato, Diva Cakes, and a salad bar created by Dorothy Guild committee member Carolyn Stoaks. Barefoot Wine and Bubbly once again hosted its wine tasting bar. Designers and manufacturers from San Francisco, Los Angeles and Orange County took the spotlight on the 70-foot runway. The sold-out crowd of 500, which was the largest so far in the history of the event, cheered one-of-a-kind gowns by LA Designer Clay Sadler; casual menswear from Margaritaville Apparel, also from Los Angeles; ladies spring /resort wear by Costa Mesa’s Tulum Island Boutique; custom tailored menswear by Rod Alan , also of Costa Mesa; leather from San Francisco-based West Coast Leather and the OC’s own Dark 8 Leather. The signature of any Dorothy fashion show is the men’s underwear finale – always a crowd pleaser. Underwear was provided by LA’s Freedom Reigns. This year, even the female models wore the men’s underwear accessorized with red Dorothy Guild t-shirts and sporting bra-shaped bags from DOCE XII. The men, well, they just wore the underwear, oh la la! A treasure of exciting items were snatched up by eager guests in the silent auction, and the raffle included Angels Baseball tickets, Dom Perignon, a baseball cap autographed by Elton John and a leather jacket by Dark 8 Leather. The surprise auctioneer was Dave Hester, star of the hit A&E series Storage Wars. “I knew Dave was going to be at the event but I didn’t know he was going to be so generous as to throw in a special auction package for a lucky person to spend the day on the set of Storage War. He’s a good friend and a great guy”, said Venezia. Afterwards, the crowd and the models rocked to sounds of DJ Golden Mike. Twenty-year-old Tina Di Landri Gets It Done In The $30,000 Blenheim Classic Grand Prix The June Classic I wrapped up today and it could not have been a better day to spend at the Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park. The sun was shining and the competition was hot as up and coming star Tina Di Landri was able to outride the international field by over a second in a nail biting jump-off. The competition will only get better as the series runs for another three weeks in San Juan Capistrano. The Zone 10 North American Junior and Young Rider Championship Team Trails were the prelude to the young blood domination of the week. Both Junior and Young Riders rode towards a cumulative high point standing over the course of the week. By Sunday, the top ten riders were named to each team. The top four riders from Junior and Young Riders are named to the team with the fifth rider named as the team alternate and fifth individual rider. Both teams will continue on to the NAJYRC Finals later in the year in Lexington, Kentucky. Team names are listed below. Nineteen horse and rider pairs took on course designer Linda Allen’s Grand Prix course this afternoon in the $30,000 Blenheim Classic Grand Prix, presented by St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort and Spa. Veteran rider Rusty Stewart, and his trusty mount Bristol, led the International field as the first clear round in the 90 second time allowed track. “It’s a course suitable for the horses starting out and for the experienced ones”, mentioned Allen, “it’s always fun to see a mixed group tackle the same course.” Challenges included multiple tight turns, a triple bar, an oxer-vertical double, an optional water jump and a finishing line that included a vertical-oxervertical triple combination. Six other riders were able to go clear and join Stewart in the jump-off. Four nations represented the jump-off field, including Brazil, Mexico, Australia, and the United States. Allen adjusted the track for the jumpoff leaving contenders with a very demanding course but with numerous options. The competition’s intensity grew by round as each horse and rider were able to stop the clock and claim the lead. Riding for his 100th Grand Prix victory, Hap Hansen and Linda Smith’s Archie Bunker were able the best the men in the field and secure the lead with a time of 35.452. Three ladies wrapped up the field but with an unfortunate rail, Michelle Parker, and her magnificent nine-year-old Selle Francais mare Xel Ha, would become the fastest four faulters of the day. It was deja vu as Brazilian rider Josephina Nor Lantzman galloped into the ring, looking to better the time of legend Hap Hansen, just as she did earlier this season in Thermal when she barred Hansen of his record win by just a few hundredths of a second. Lantzman took charge of the course, cutting corners and galloping between lines knowing that Chello Z was capable of topping the leaderboard yet again. Gunning to the wire, Lantzman and Chello Z stopped the clock in a blazing 35.151, to take the lead, and yet again, put Hansen’s 100th win on hold for another day, settling for 3rd respectively. With one rider to go in the jump-off, it seemed near impossible to better the time of current leader Lantzman. Young rider, and up and coming Grand Prix star, Tina Di Landri did not let her nerves get to her but rather kept a sense of calm going into the ring. “I knew I’d have the upper hand riding last in both rounds and watching everyone else go before me.” Tina shared. “The course was great though. It wasn’t super technical, but the time allowed was tight so there was no room for error. We needed to cut some corners to avoid time faults.” Di Landri and the 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse Avargo have been riding as a team for two years, and began

competing at the Grand Prix level only last summer. Going into the jump-off, “it was all about turning and having momentum,” noted Di Landri. “After watching how slick Hap (Hansen) moved around the course and how intense Josephina (Lantzman) went, I knew coming in I had to be quick and shave off as much time around turns as possible. I was very happy with him (Avargo)”. Di Landri was able to ride a flawless course stopping the clock at a remarkable 34.120, over a second faster and good enough for 1st. “I couldn’t be happier,” Allen smiled, “there’s nothing a course designer could be happier with then to have the final rider win it all.” While everyone holds their breathe for Hap Hansen

to clinch that 100th victory, “we’ll all just enjoy riding along with him until that day happens. It’s wonderful to see Hap (Hansen) riding so well and I hope that the two young ones (Josephina Lantsman and Tina Di Landri) are riding just as well at his age.” The competition continues next week in sunny San Juan Capistrano with Saturday’s $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and Sunday’s $30,000 June Classic Grand Prix, presented by Royal Champion. COACH of the month Athlete’s Choice is pleased to announce our Coach of the Month, Robert DeVault I’ve lived in California all my life. I grew up in Northern, CA. so I’m a big fan of the San Francisco Giants and 49er’s. We moved to Rancho Santa Margarita 14 years ago. It’s a great place to live! Awesome families and friends. My beautiful wife Mary and I have been blessed with four wonderful kids, Desmond 21, Sage 16, Eve 12, and Duke 6. I started coaching 20 years ago in all different sports. My first coaching experience was with my younger brother. I coached his 15 year old baseball team. Coaching at that level right out of the gate was by far my biggest challenge. Although it was tough my brother and I became closer from the experience. Since then I have coached several years in Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football. It sounds like a cliché but I love coaching sports because of the players. Each season it’s like being part of a family. You grow together, learn together, laugh together, cry together, and love together. During the process you compete with yourselves and others to be better at the sport you enjoy. The greatest part of coaching is the help you receive from volunteers during the process. I have had wonderful assistant coaches, parent volunteers, and friends who have helped me not make a mess of things for many years. I thank them for their time, energy, and encouragement. Outside of coaching I spend time hanging out with my family, golfing , and having fun with friends. Also I volunteer as a board member for Tesoro High School Lacrosse and Santa Margarita Pop Warner Football. I want to thank Kevin and Maria Hickman at Athletes Choice for this honor and also for opening their business in Ranch Santa Margarita. Peace.
