2012 PAGEANT HONORS THE MASTERS IN “THE GENIUS” The king of trial and error Thomas Edison once famously said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and 99% perspiration.” Few people are more aware of the amount of time and effort that will be required to turn her inspiration into the 2012 Pageant of the Masters than its director Diane Challis Davy. But, even as she finalizes her selections of artworks for next summer’s world-famous theatrical celebration of art in “living pictures” - tableaux vivants - Challis Davy is excited about the possibilities inherent in its theme, The Genius. “The theme actually originated back in 2009 when we produced The Muse,” Challis Davy explained. “That show examined women’s roles in making and inspiring art, and was selected from a feminine point of view. I thought it would be interesting to craft a ‘companion’ show, one with a masculine sensibility, focusing on the power, strength and intelligence inherent in masterful works of art.” Challis Davy has also chosen a secondary theme for The Genius, the relationship between art and advances in science and technology. “I’m curious about the materials and techniques used by the old masters,” Challis Davy said. “One hundred fifty years ago, artists had to make their own paints! You almost had to be a chemist or alchemist. And I’m fascinated by the huge roles played by developments in optics and photography in painting realistic works.” She was quick to add, “But, you won’t have to be a rocket scientist to enjoy The Genius.” Clearly, the 2012 Pageant will be very different from the whimsical escapism of last summer’s Only Make Believe. Tributes to the lives and masterpieces of extraordinary artists whose works have withstood the test of time will be in the forefront of the 2012 Pageant, including Michelangelo, Vincent van Gogh and the Dutch Masters, to name a few. Legendary composers will be feted in series of artworks dedicated to the “Maestros of Music,” and scientific innovation will be highlighted in “The Stars of Astronomy.” And Pageant traditionalists will no doubt welcome the return of the Renaissance master, Leonardo da Vinci, whose “The Last Supper” has been the Pageant finale, with rare exceptions, since 1936. “’The Last Supper,’ is arguably the most recognizable masterwork of all time,” Challis Davy observed, Page 2
“and Leonardo da Vinci was a genius for the ages, no question. He was not afraid to experiment and take chances,” she said. Longtime Pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling, already busy researching the narration for the show, added, “Genius exists in every field of endeavor, and it’s a fantastic source for moving stories of triumph, tragedy and courage. If you’re looking for inspiration, this show is going to dare you to think big.” When asked about what surprises might be in store for 2012 in terms of music or special effects, Challis Davy, preparing for her 17th year as Pageant director, noted there are plans for some advances in sound design and digital projection, and hopes for some “unexpected light effects.” Laughing, she added, “Sorry, no 3-D glasses.” With its ambitious selection of acknowledged masterpieces, The Genius will certainly be an exciting centerpiece for the Festival of Art’s celebration of its 80th anniversary. The Pageant’s annual open casting calls will take place in January where volunteers sign up, get their photos and measurements on file and then wait to hear if they’ll be a part of the upcoming Pageant. Last year, more than 1,100 people turned out. Everyone associated with the production understands the Pageant wouldn’t be possible without that spirit of volunteer dedication. As Challis Davy acknowledges, their dedication and loyalty are the remarkable engines that sustain the Pageant. “I love art AND theatre,” Challis Davy said, “and I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who love the hard work it takes to produce a very elaborate show. I get inspiration from my scriptwriter, my staff, my composers, and from the scores of enthusiastic research volunteers who come up with great suggestions!” The Pageant of the Masters will be performed nightly from Saturday, July 7, through Friday, August 31, 2012. Tickets for The Genius, the 2012 Pageant of the Masters, are currently on sale to Festival of Arts members, and may be purchased by the general public at www.PageantTickets.com, beginning December 1st. Tickets start at $15. For further information, call 949-497-6852, or toll free 800-487-3378. photos by Kate Noelle

Festival Green sizzles with Jazz The Festival green will sizzle on the afternoon of July 7th when Jessy J, one of the most exciting young artists to hit the contemporary jazz scene in years, brings her Latin-spiced jazz melodies to Laguna Beach. Jessy J will kick off the Festival’s special event series “Jazz on the Green,” which throughout the summer will headline many of jazz’s most notable figures. In just a few short years, Jessy J has emerged as a unique talent. A jazz prodigy with Mexican roots, Jessy J represents a nontraditional yet incredibly exciting classic jazz sound with a slightly Latin flare. Her critically acclaimed song “Tequila Moon” won “Contemporary Jazz Song of the Year” from R&R and Billboard in 2008, and Jessy J was named “Debut Artist of the Year” the same. Jessy J also received high critical acclaim from publications across the board, including Latina Style Magazine, Jazziz Magazine and Saxophone Journal Magazine. She was even credited with starting a new movement in Jazz in the May cover story of JAZZIZ magazine and “increasing the boundaries of jazz both musically and demographically.” People en Espanol says simply this young Latina
is “revolutionizing jazz.” “We could not have asked for a better artist to launch our Jazz on the Green series than Jessy J,” said Susan Davis, director of special events for the Festival of Arts. “She’s young, she’s beautiful, she’s delightful, and her zesty sound is sensational. She’s going to make Festival attendees want to come out for every Jazz on the Green performance of the season!” Jessy J will perform on July 7th from 1pm - 3pm on stage at the Festival green. There is no extra cost beyond admission to the Festival of Arts for guests to enjoy the performance by Jessy J. The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters are sponsored in part by Acura, Cox Communications, Fidelity Investments, KOST Radio 103.5, the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, and The Orange County Register. In celebration of the Festival’s 80th Anniversary this summer, The Festival of Arts – California’s Premier Fine Art Show – is pleased to launch the exhibit’s first self-guided cell phone based audio tour. The audio platform, provided by Guide by Cell, allows visitors to use their cell phones to dial a designated local phone number and enter the booth number of the artist they’d like to hear from. Each three to five minute prerecorded audio message may include a short biography of the artist, a brief explanation of the work being presented, or insight on a certain medium or technique. “Artists are the ideal people to tell their own story,” says Festival Marketing and Public Relations Director, Sharbie Higuchi. “By listening to the new Audio Guide, visitors will gain a greater appreciation for an artist’s work from the knowledge of who the artist is and what makes his/her work unique.” Participating in the 2012 Festival of Arts are 140 of Orange County’s finest painters, sculptors, ceramists, jewelers, photographers and other artists who display and sell original works on the festival grounds. The summer exhibition also includes art
workshops, educational classes, demonstrations, live musical entertainment and special events. The Festival of Arts audio tour launches July 2012 and will be available during the run of the 2012 exhibition, July 1 – August 31, 2012. LOCAL MILITARY FAMILY OUTREACH RUNNING IN ALL DIRECTIONS THIS SUMMER In explaining his relativity theory, Albert Einstein once stated, “Time is what keeps everything from happening at once.” Don’t expect that to be much reassurance to San Clemente Military Family Outreach (SCMFO), a south county all-volunteer nonprofit that is literally doing everything at once this summer in getting ready for its Fall campaign. The organization has received steadfast support from the community since its predecessor, Friends of San Onofre Marines, was founded over nine years ago, but the needs for emergency assistance to north Camp Pendleton military families continues to grow. Aid is provided day in and day out to those families struggling with the cost of gas, food, diapers, formula, school supplies, car repair and other unexpected expenses. This time of year, attention is centered on planning a summer mail campaign and a Fall variety show fundraiser-- both tied to a Thanksgiving morale event through which over 1,000 low income Pendleton families each receive a turkey, roasting pan, stuffing, vegetables and all the fixings of the traditional dinner. The Outreach has been doing this annually and makes the distribution on base a few days before the holiday. Over the past decade, an estimated 7,500 birds have been handed out. Complicating the schedule, though, is that this morale booster also overlaps with SCMFO’s “Thank a Family” giveaway of Christmas gifts to other needy military families. And the bulk of the funding for all these events and ongoing year-around services must be generated between mid-August and October. This crowded schedule is probably what the founders-- Lt. Col. Bill McReynolds and wife Sidonia-- had in mind when they launched the group almost 10 years ago. Theanniversary is now being celebrated, and Sidonia McReynolds was presented the SCMFO “Impact” award at a recent meeting. “The need still exists and is still being faithfully met,” said McReynolds in accepting the award. Information on SCMFO programs and events can be found at www. militaryfamilyoutreach.com.
Mission Hospital Earns Prestigious Magnet Recognition For Providing Excellent Nursing Care to Patients Mission Hospital recently received Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, which is considered the highest national honor bestowed upon nursing services at a hospital. With this credential, Mission Hospital joins the Magnet community – a select group of 393 health care organizations out of nearly 6,000 U.S. health care organizations. “Magnet Recognition is a symbol of the hospital’s commitment to excellence in the delivery of patient care,” said Linda Johnson RN, MSN, NEA-BC, vice president of patient care and chief nursing officer for Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach. “It took tremendous teamwork and collaboration amongst all staff to achieve this recognition.” Johnson said the hospital is honored to receive Magnet recognition during the year-long 100th Jubilee celebration of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. “Our Magnet journey theme has focused on the mission and ministry of the Sisters, and we believe that our responsibility is to carry on the work of the Sisters through our commitment to providing excellent nursing and patient care, with a focus on Dignity, Service, Excellence and Justice,” Johnson said. She shared that the Magnet surveyors Page 6
were impressed with the “strong integration of the values at all levels of the organization.” Mission Hospital is the second St. Joseph Health hospital to achieve Magnet status with St. Joseph Hospital of Orange previously receiving this honor. St. Joseph Health is a 14-hospital, non-profit, Catholic health care delivery system sponsored by the St. Joseph Health Ministry that includes acute care hospitals, home health agencies, hospice care, outpatient services, skilled nursing facilities, community clinics and physician organizations serving California, Texas and New Mexico. Magnet recognition is determined by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®, which ensures that rigorous standards for nursing excellence are met. Magnet recognition has become the gold standard for nursing excellence and is taken into consideration when the public judges health care organizations. In fact, U.S. News & World Report’s annual showcase of “America’s Best Hospitals” includes Magnet recognition in its ranking criteria for quality of inpatient care. To achieve Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands wide-

spread participation from leadership and staff. The process begins with the submission of an electronic application, followed by written documentation demonstrating qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding patient care and outcomes. If scores from the written documentation fall within a range of excellence, an on-site visit will occur to thoroughly assess the applicant. After this rigorous on-site review process, the Commission on Magnet will review the completed appraisal report and vote to determine whether Magnet recognition will be granted. Family-Friendly Treats Make For Summertime Fun Kids love to help in the kitchen. “Made It Myself” Tasty Treats provide a perfect summer activity that every kid will enjoy decorating – and eating. Rice cereal treats may be known for being square, but with some dazzling decorations and a little imagination, this take on the classic snack is totally outside the box. Mom and Dad will need to stir up the ingredients – dried fruits and nuts bring extra flavor and crunch to the traditional recipe – but once the treats cool, the kids can get in the kitchen. San Clemente Cupcake Maker Teams Up With FAM to Help Feed The Hungry It is difficult to believe that hunger exists in Orange County. Most people think of hunger in terms of famine and mass starvation, terrible tragedies; not something that affects people every day in our own community. Hunger in our community is often more subtle. It’s a child who stuffs his pockets during lunch at school so he has food to eat at home in the evening. It’s a parent who is ironically overweight, because sugar and carbohydrateladen foods are often the least expensive at the local store. It’s a senior citizen who goes without food in order to buy medicine, further jeopardizing their already fragile health.
Courtside Restaurant is a beautiful location specializing in exquisite and memorable events. We offer casual elegance for any type of event.

The reality is that there are hungry people in Orange County. Family Assistance Ministries of South Orange County (FAM) was founded in 1999 by Ellen Gilchrist to continue to accommodate families that the Episcopal Service Alliance could no longer serve. They started with 135 and now they provide assistance to nearly 2,000 people every month; half of these are children and the elderly. The newest bakery in San Clemente, Oh For Sweets Sake at 111 Avenida Palizada in Old City Plaza, is teaming up with FAM, and will sponsor a canned food drive that will run July 1st through July 31st. Folks can bring a canned or boxed good and save $1 on a single treat or bring in 2 food items to save $3 on a six-pack. Donations received through the drive will help FAM feed those in need throughout South Orange County. Food items that are being accepted are cans of food of any kind and box food like macaroni and cheese, etc. (No glass items please) A contribution means much needed help, and hope, will be available to those who need it. Your generosity makes a difference. Your donation makes a difference! Visit Oh For Sweets Sake at www.ohforsweetssake.com and Family Assistance Ministries at www.family-assistance.org

Vanguard University Dedicated New “Veterans Courtyard of Honor” Some 150 local veterans and supporters joined Vanguard University’s (VU) Director of Veteran Affairs Brent Theobald and the Vanguard Veteran Advisory Board to celebrate the dedication of the new “Veterans Courtyard of Honor.” While some universities have “memorials” in dedication to veterans, VU has created a unique courtyard supported by pillars with plaques representing the armed services as a place to gather in remembrance and honor. Former Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) and VU Board Member Admiral Vernon E. Clark, USN (Ret.) served as the keynote speaker. Admiral Clark, who retired in 2005 after completing the Navy’s second-longest tenure as CNO, spoke about his experience in leadership and addressed the difficulty facing veterans today as they transition from the military to civilian life. “This special courtyard serves as a symbol of our appreciation for those of you who have chosen to wear the ‘cloth of the nation,’” stated Admiral Clark. Following the keynote address was a moment of silence to the song “Taps.” “Value Pillars” are positioned around the courtyard to honor the sacrifice and legacy of family, friends and comrades. Donors of each pillar chose a value and a quote or scripture verse and donated resources in honor of a loved one. A ceremony unveiled the pillars which represented “Honor” - Kenneth E. Gail, USN; “Gratitude” - Clifford A. Taylor, USN; “Camaraderie” - Miriam E. Dotson; “Commitment” - Paul Oddo, USN; “Justice” - Jack E. Dotson; “Truth” - Leonard L. Wheeland, and “Integrity” - Thomas W. Prince. The courtyard on campus holds extra sentimental meaning to VU President Dr. Carol Taylor who personally donated funds for a pillar in honor of her father, Clifford A. Taylor, who served in the Navy in WWII. “The Veterans Courtyard of Honor stands as a beacon to say to our veterans, ‘welcome home. Thank you for your service. You are not alone. We pray for your peace and for the day when wars will be no more,’” stated President Taylor. A very touching moment was during the Service Melody as veterans stood to the melody from their branch of service. Other highlights of the ceremony included the Presentation of the Colors by USMC Color Guard Mag 39 and the national anthem sung by VU student Caitlin Barney ’13, the invocation by Chaplain Captain David Sarmiento, USAF. The Challenge Coin Ceremony was another special moment in which VU honored each of their graduating veteran students by presenting them with a unique Vanguard University Challenge Coin. Dating back to WWI, challenge coins are traditionally carried by military members to display pride and recognition. The event concluded with the unveiling of the pillars and benediction by Chaplain David Brooks, Costa Mesa PD, Ret, Police Captain and Vietnam Veteran. Distinguished guests in the crowd also included Fred and Ruth Waugh, Jack Hammett, Edison Miller, Adele and David Oddo, Dixie and Ed Arnold, Tessy and Col. Ron Nipper, Jack Hammett, Col. Stewart Navarre, and Don Andrews. The “Veterans Courtyard of Honor” is an enduring symbol of gratitude to honor the service of military personnel and veterans. The courtyard was created as part of VU’s commitment to honor the legacy of all veterans while preparing the next generation as they transition out of the military during this difficult economic time. The courtyard will be used to host University events and receptions. There are still naming opportunities with all proceeds going directly to Student Veteran Scholarships. For more information about the “Veterans Courtyard of Honor” watch this video at http://vimeo.com/42732202 or visit http://veterans.vanguard.edu/. Photos by David Ahntholz Page 12

Ladies Dominate the Field in the $30,000 Red, White and Blue Classic Grand Prix
Josephine Nor-Lantzman (BRA) aboard Chello Z It was déjà vu this afternoon as Josephina Nor-Lantzman (BRA) and Tina Di Landri went head to head in the jump-off for the $30,000 Red, White and Blue Classic Grand Prix. The first week of the series featured the $30,000 Blenheim Classic Grand Prix where both riders returned in the jump-off as the final two rounds. Di Landri put up the final time and bested the field, leaving Nor-Lantzman (BRA) in second, respectively. Today, Nor Lantzman (BRA) was able to scare off the competition and seek revenge without fault to take the $30,000 Red, White and Blue Classic Grand Prix, presented by Ritz Carlton - Laguna Niguel. Seven nations represented the twenty six rounds of today’s Grand Prix. Leaving it to the young rider from Brazil, Josephina NorLantzman (BRA) was the only rider to post two clean rounds and master the course designed by fellow Brazilian, Anderson Lima. “She did a phenomenal job.” Lima complemented Nor-Lantzman, “We set a tough course, but Josephina (Nor-Lantzman) handled it great.” Of the sixteen efforts, riders found complications coming into a wide oxer with only four strides to regroup and set for a skinny vertical. Other challenges riders faced included a vertical-oxer-vertical triple combina-
tion, an oxer with a liverpool, a triple bar to vertical combination and a tight time allowed of 87 seconds. After three rounds, “we decided to adjust the time to allow to 92 seconds,” noted Lima “for a little more comfort around the course and to allow them to jump better, “The level of horses was great and I’m glad the design complimented all of them.” Nor-Lantzman (BRA) took a strong focus of the course and was able to guide her twelve-year-old Warmblood, Chello Z, to a fast and clean time of 84.999 seconds. “The course was tough enough,” Nor-Lantzman commented, “There were a lot of short lines to verticals that made you have to ride a little bit.” Only two rounds later, Di Landri was also able to put up a fault free effort under the time allowed in 87.350 seconds, creating a jump-off. With five riders to go in the class, Tiffany Sullivan and Hayley Farms’ Tristan were able to qualify in a time of 87.517 seconds and join Nor-Lantzman (BRA) and Di Landri in a ladies’ jump-off. After a quick reset and Sullivan pulling out of the jump-off, NorLantzman (BRA) and Di Landri were once again going head to head for the win. Nor-Lantzman (BRA) and Chello Z galloped in and immediately presented Chello Z to the first obstacle on the opposite end of the
field, a wide oxer that was not used in the qualifying round. “My plan for the jump-off was to just go for it,” Nor-Lantzman commented, “There was a new fence so I was careful, but I didn’t want what happened the first week to happen again. Everything went perfectly, and he jumped great!” Di Landri and Avargo came in knowing they had to beat the swift time of 37.680 seconds, but with the confidence of knowing it had been done before, Di Landri wasn’t nervous. “My plan for the jump-off was to be loose and have a tight enough roll back to cut off some time. “noted Di Landri, “Avargo’s turns are so good I knew he could do it.” Di Landri had an unfortunate rail on the first oxer and decided to retire and finish second, respectively. “Unfortunately my plan didn’t work out.” Di Landri continued, “Avargo is such a great horse though and I was so proud of him.” With only one round in the jumpoff, it was going to take a brilliant ride and a careful horse to get though it without fault. “The jump-off was designed for the riders to reach all areas of the course.” revealed Lima (BRA). “The turn after the first jump was meant to be the hardest but Josephina (Nor-Lantzman) handled it great. I thought it was a fun class.” “I love having a course designed
by a Brazilian because it gives me more fire and more adrenaline when I ride and it sure pays off. I thought Anderson (Lima) designed a great course,” smiled Nor-Lantzman. “I’m still laughing though because this week is the Red, White and Blue Classic and the first week of the series I got a red, the second week I got a white, and this week a blue! I was so proud of Chello Z. He always tries his heart out.” Nor-Lanztman will return home to Del Mar to prepare for the Showpark July Series. The Blenheim Red, White and Blue Classic wrapped the four weeks of top level Show Jumping and High Performance Hunters in San Juan Capistrano, CA. With daily sunshine, green grass footing, intense competition and exciting spills and thrills, the summer show season has only just begun. The Blenheim EquiSports horse shows will shift to The Del Mar Horsepark for the Showpark July Series. Highlights include the $30,000 Racing Festival Grand Prix, presented by EquiFit, inc, the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, the $30,000 August Festival Grand Prix, presented by Mary’s Tack and Feed, and much more! 80 Years of Art Front and Center: The Festival of Arts – California’s Premier Fine Art Show & Pageant of the Masters Return to Laguna Beach
Since 1932, the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts has been dedicated to showcasing the most talented artists, promoting the finest art and producing the most unique and fascinating art events in the state of California and even the nation. The Festival has come to be known for two principle events that span. the length of July and August of each year. The Festival of Arts – California’s Premier Fine Art Show is a rigorously juried art show that in 2012 is featuring 140 of Orange County’s finest artists. Pageant of the Masters – Where Art Comes to Life is an intricate stage production featuring faithful art re-creations of classical and contemporary works with real people posing to look like their counterparts in the original pieces. In the summer of 1932, when the country was suffering the ravages of the Great Depression, a group of Laguna Beach artists decided they were going to do something to lift the spirits of those around them (and maybe earn a little bit of muchneeded money). They transformed the main street in Laguna Beach into a virtual outdoor art gallery and the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts was Page 18
born. Eighty years later, The Festival of Arts — California’s Premier Fine Art Show is consistently named among the top ten art shows in the nation, and it is the flagship event in the art colony culture for which Laguna Beach is now so well known. In 2012 the Festival of Arts is offering 140 of the finest photographers, sculptors, painters, and jewelers the opportunity to display and sell original works of fine art. The beautiful Festival of Arts grounds, with exhibitor spaces arranged elegantly around an inviting lawn area (the Festival Green), makes for a warm, classy venue perfect for live entertainment. The Festival’s Art Center provides a spacious area perfectly suited for visitors to create their own art with the help of artists. That’s why the Festival of Arts has become a summer entertainment mecca as well as an art appreciation destination. Enjoy hands-on art activities such as workshops in printmaking and ceramics, plus nightly live entertainment on the green. Special events such as a world-class jazz concert series, cooking demonstrations, youth arts education days, a fashion show with an ecologically

artistic twist, celebrity events and much, much more will keep you happily coming to the Festival of Arts all summer long. The show is open daily from July 1 – August 31, 2012, from 10am to 11:30pm (July 1 – 4, 10am to 6pm and August 25, 10am to 3:30pm). General Admission: Weekdays $7, Weekends $10; Students & Seniors: Weekdays $4, Weekends $6; Free Admission for Children 12 and under, Military, and Laguna Beach Residents. There is quite simply nothing like the Festival’s extraordinary production, Pageant of the Masters - where art comes to life. The Pageant of the Masters is an internationally acclaimed production of tableaux vivants – “living pictures” – that for the last seventy-nine years has combined the worlds of theater and art. Under the guidance of an experienced and talented staff, volunteers are magically transformed into life-sized re-creations of classical and contemporary paintings, sculptures and other works of art. Presentations are accompanied by the music of a full, live orchestra and live narration in a beautiful, starlit amphitheater in Laguna Beach. The 2012 Pageant of the
Masters presentation of The Genius will showcase the fascinating and unpredictable relationship between art and technology. Running nightly July 7 – August 31, 2012 at 8:30pm. Tickets for Pageant of the Masters are $15 - $100 (depending on seat location and night of the week). Pageant of the Masters ticket holders can present their stub at The Festival of Arts front gate for free admission to the art show all summer long. The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters are sponsored in part by Acura, Cox Communications, Fidelity Investments, KOST Radio 103.5, the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, and The Orange County Register. The Festival of Arts is a non-profit organization that produces The Festival of Arts – California’s Premier Fine Art Show and the Pageant of the Masters. For general information, call (949)4941145 or visit the website at www.LagunaFestivalofArts.org. The event is located at 650 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, California. Proceeds support the arts and art education in and about Laguna Beach.
