Modern convenience has made it so all we have to do is go to the local mega mart and buy an Easter Egg Coloring Kit. They come in all sizes and styles. You can buy them with the latest cartoon character stickers, or with wax sticks, these are better known as crayons. You can buy the ones with sparkles and stripes and rollers. There a lot of choices and isles full of great ideas. Easter Egg glitz and glitter will light up most children’s eyes. But there are other ways to decorate your Easter Eggs. You can make your own Easter Egg Dye. You have to use a container that is big enough to hold your liquid dye. You will need to keep in mind that you will be placing a boiled egg, or blown egg shell in it also. Take just 2/3 cups of water and 2 teaspoons of distilled vinegar and you have the base for your egg coloring ideas. Equip yourself with food coloring you can find on the spice isle in the grocery store and you are in business. You will need to add about a total of ¼ teaspoon of food color, about 24 drops to each mixture. Here is where those basic kindergarten skills come into play. Remember that red and blue make purple and that yellow and blue make green, red and yellow make orange and so on. Add the colors drop by drop until you have the color you like. You may not be able to tell what color that you have by looking down into you mixture, you may want to place a drop or to on a piece of white paper to see exactly what shade you have made. Now that you have your mixture made up, all you need is a boiled egg or a blown egg shell. Carefully place it into the liquid dye. The longer you leave it in the dye the darker your colored egg will be. The general rule is about for two minutes. You can also have the kids get out the crayons and draw on their Easter Eggs. Be careful if using just blown shells sometimes a child, or an adult, can push to hard with the crayon and break or crack the shell. Where ever the crayon is used it will resist the Easter Egg dye. Rubber bands work
well too. You can wrap them all around your egg before putting them in the color. Any where the rubber band is there will be no color. Painters tape will work well also here. Another neat technique is to make strips. You can use pipe cleaners to suspend only half the egg in one color and then flip it to make the other half of your egg another color. Want to go all natural? There are plenty of things around your kitchen that can make wonderful colors for your Easter Egg coloring fun. You start by placing your eggs in a single layer, and covering with water. You then add a teaspoons of distilled vinegar. You will then add what ever natural ingredient you are going to use for your dye and bring the water to a boil. Then simmer for about 15 minutes. You can then remove you eggs and dry on a paper towel. What can you use to for color? There are some great things in your pantry. You can start with fresh beets, cranberries or frozen raspberries these will make your eggs a pale red. Want orange? Try onion skins. Spinach leaves will give you green eggs and blueberries will give you blue eggs. Strong coffee will make your eggs brown to beige. You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to decorating your Easter Eggs. Kids will have great fun coming up with ideas on how to decorate them. Using finger paints? Decoupage? Let yours and your child’s imagination free when it comes to decorating your Easter Eggs. You can add glitter and sparkles and even dig into your sticker supply and use them after your Easter Egg has been dyed and is completely dry. All those great skills they are learning in grade school art class will come into play when decorating Easter Eggs. Have fun with your kids and make some sparkly beautiful Easter Eggs. Easter Egg making is fun and builds lifetime memories for both children and adults. If you make your own dyes or purchase the supplies all in a box at the store, have fun with it, and be creative! The Environmental Nature Center (ENC) recently installed an Electric Vehicle Charging Station, and purchased an Electric Vehicle (EV) to be used as an eco-friendly mode of transportation for its Traveling Naturalist. The ENC is celebrating 40 years of providing quality education through hands on experience with nature. To celebrate this milestone, the ENC purchased an EV for its new Traveling Naturalist program, which conducts off site environmental education programs at schools and for community groups. “Over the last 40 years, the ENC has served as our community’s foremost authority on ecological responsibility, sustainable practices and environmental education,” Bo Glover, Executive Director said. “The ENC is committed to promoting sustainability. The vehicle and charging station will launch the ENC into a new era, and inspire others to protect the natural world.” The ENC purchased a new Ford Transit Connect Electric van that can travel up to 80 miles on a single charge, and can be recharged using either a 240-volt or standard 120volt outlet. A motivating factor for the ENC was the opportunity to reduce its impact on the environment
by recharging the vehicle using the energy obtained from solar panels at its facility. “I think it’s great that we’re able to ‘practice what we preach’ when it comes to being green and sustainable,” said ENC Traveling Naturalist Sama Wareh, who also designed the wrap for the new vehicle. “As I’m driving to schools, loaded up with hawks, owls, snakes and tarantulas, I feel proud knowing that my vehicle is producing zero emissions. When I plug in at schools I feel like I’m setting a positive example and educating people through my actions!” The charging station accommodates two vehicles. One of the spaces will be designated for the ENC’s charging needs, while the other will be made available to Center visitors and community members.
With approximately 20 other charging stations located throughout Orange County, the ENC will be joining the effort of providing a recharging destination for drivers that have opted for an eco-friendly vehicle powered by electricity rather than gasoline. The ENC encourages local residents to come by the center for a refill of nature and electricity. The ENC’s 3 1/2 acre outdoor classroom displays 15 native plant communities that range from a desert, to a freshwater marsh, to a redwood forest. For more information about the electric vehicle recharging program call 949-6458489, or visit www.ENCenter.org.

The American Heart Association’s 2012 Orange County Go Red For Women Luncheon at the Balboa Bay Club drew 500 locals and raised more than $246,000 for the fight against heart disease – the No. 1 killer of women. The sold out event celebrated medical milestones and highlighted local heart disease and stroke survivors whose lives were saved by innovations in cardiovascular science and medicine. The Luncheon is held annually to bring Orange County women together to learn more about heart disease and empower them with the tools to live a heart-healthy life. The half-day event included educational breakout sessions, hosted by Edwards Lifesciences and St. Joseph Hospital, and a silent auction featuring exquisite purses of all shapes, sizes, and color. Each purse came with free cardiovascular screening courtesy of St. Joseph Hospital. Opening up the luncheon were several speakers who told their personal story about their battle with a heart related issue. They came from different backgrounds, were various ages, but all were women who had one thing in common, they were there to support the Go Red for Women campaign. Lynn-Holly Johnson, an actress who survived a stroke caused by a hole in her heart; Judy Brandt, a local HR consultant who had open-heart surgery to (left to right) Dr. Shaista Malik, Lisa Hennigan, Molly Nunez, Ellen Bristol, repair a defective heart valve last year; Loretta Beaumont, a teacher whose Dana Stradling and Nathalie DeMichelis life has been saved by both CPR and the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator); Judy Voltmer, survivor of quintuple bypass surgery; and Victoria Collins, 2012 Honorary Chair of the Go Red For Women Luncheon and a heart disease survivor who is thriving with a pacemaker. Bernadette Reyes, Regional Design Manager for Clark Construction, talked about her mother who died of sudden cardiac arrest. Her tearful story touched many as she related the day’s events leading up to her mother’s death. “Life is so precious” she said after losing her mom 18 months ago. Life was forever changed for her and her family so she’s making it her mission to end heart disease, challenging everyone to join the “Red Boa Feather Society”. Those who gave a donation received a feathery red boa. Kelly Perkins, a heart transplant recipient known for her landmark accomplishments in climbing mountains with a donor heart, was the keynote speaker. Her husband joined her on stage where they tagged team the story of her heart problems starting in 1995, their journey together climbing major peaks across the world, to her first book “The Climb of My Life; Scaling Mountains with a Borrowed Heart”. (from left to right) Scharrell Jackson, Victoria Collins, Jacquin Davidson What’s nice about this luncheon is the food that was being served went and Aimee Weisner along with a heart healthy lifestyle. The first course was a Duet of Porcini Mushroom Bisque (made with chicken stock, not cream) along with a fresh salad of Arugula, provolone, sun-dried tomatoes with grilled breast of chicken on focaccia. Dessert gave guests a trio of sorbets – mango, coconut and raspberry with fresh berries and small biscotti. Jacquin Davidson, First Vice President Business Banking Officer at First Independence Bank, chaired the event. Davidson’s father died of a heart attack in her arms when she was 15 years old and years later, she survived a stroke. Her team of volunteers included Lee Ann Canaday, Scharrell Jackson, Renee Mazeroll, Nella Webster, and Aimee Weisner. Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death in women, claiming the lives of 430,000 women every year. More women die of cardiovascular diseases than the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Go Red For Women raises awareness of heart disease in women and empowers them to take charge of their health. For information on how to get involved next year, visit www. OCGoRed.org.

Give it up for our Marines Again, I am collecting golf club sets, golf clubs, golf balls and golf gear for our amazing Wounded Warriors at Camp Pendleton. Then they can play golf and have fun with their able bodied Marine peers when not on deployment. Yes, in the past many in this community have given up their no longer needed golf items for this cause. Every golfer has things to give up. Merely browse through your garage with an open and giving mind. The next step is to notify me that you have golf supplies to give up for our very own Marines. Call me at the phone number listed under my name below or, send me a “yes I will” email reply. Then we can make hand off arrangements. I do pick ups all the time. My collection goal is lofty as in the past. Please take a moment to think about the difference you and/or your friends can make in the lives of our Marines at Camp Pendleton by giving up your no longer needed golf equipment. Now, if you like this idea and message take action by contacting me, then forward this email message to all your golf buddies and/or friends. Ask them to give it up for our amazing Marines too. The right thing to do. Thank you very much. I am eager to hear from you now. My goal includes the round up of all this gear within the next 4-6 weeks. Sooner rather than later is best. The Rancho Santa Margarita planning commission unanimously approved the application of Athlete’s Choice to operate an 8,624 square foot athlete’s training facility in the business park at 23252 Arroyo Vista during their regular meeting last week. Athlete’s Choice would primarily focus on sports instruction for children and teenagers ranging in ages from 7 to 17 years old. The owners of Athlete’s Choice, Kevin and Maria Hickman have experience teaching sports instruction to youth that would use part time and full time instructors for training sessions. During the week they feature fitness classes and boot camps starting at 5:30AM and running until 7:30PM. Sports training classes start at 4:30 PM with the last at 6:30 PM. On Saturday a boot camp session would be offered at 6:30 AM and sports training sessions offered between 9:30 AM and 1:30 PM. Each training session would be 50 minutes long with a 10 minute break between sessions. Kickboxing, Yoga, PiYo, Pilates, Body Conditioning, Zumba and Kids Yoga and Kids Zumba classes take place in the NEGU Fitness room (dedicated to the late Jessie Rees who died of cancer in January) during the other sports training classes. One-on-one specialized training sessions are offered all day as well. The facility has ample parking with a surplus of 32 additional parking spaces. Kevin and Maria Hickman, owners of Athlete’s Choice are local area residents and appear to be well qualified to operate the facility as Kevin played college football at the United States Naval Academy where he holds the record for Most Receptions by a Tight End and Third All-Time Leading Receiver and then played in the NFL as a tight End for the Detroit Lions, where he was selected to be a member of the 1996 Muscle and Fitness Magazine’s All-NFL Strength Team. Kevin understudied the renowned Phil Emery, GM for the Chicago Bears, where he learned about Strength and Conditioning. Kevin and Maria his wife of 14 years have 5 children and they attend Saddleback Church where Maria leads in Women’s Ministry. Maria serves on the board of Santa Margarita Pop Warner of which Kevin is a Head Coach. Kevin is currently working on his PhD in Education with an emphasis on Leadership. Maria comes from a long line of successful business owners. Both Kevin and Maria are dedicated to improving the community’s health and fitness and doing it in a fun, affordable and exciting way. Opening day for the facility is April 2nd.

“Kevin (Owner of Athletes Choice) came into my life at a crucial point. I was entering high school, and he saw something in me that no one else saw. Most saw my athletic talent, which he saw too, but Kevin saw more than that. He cared about me as a person and wanted me to succeed off the field as much as I hoped I would on the field. A big part of where I am today has to do with the time, attention and effort Kevin gave to me at such a young age. He taught me that accomplishing my athletic goals had as much to do with my character, self discipline and attitude as it did with my talent. Kevin was like a father to me and gave me so many chances when everyone else wanted to give up on me. I owe him so much and am very thankful that he chose to stick with me through the good times as well as the bad. I am so happy and excited to see he is still giving back to the youth of today through Athletes Choice. Anyone who is mentored and trained by Kevin will be blessed.”
