Fill Up Without Filling Out When it comes to losing weight and taking care of your body, it’s really about a couple of basic principles: eat smart and move more. Combined with an active lifestyle and low-fat diet, eating greater amounts of fruits and vegetables and fewer high-calorie foods at meals can help you control your weight. A deliciously simple way to fill up without filling out is to bring watermelon into the mix. Watermelon contains 92 percent water. Every cup packs a gram of fiber for only 46 calories. It’s fat free, cholesterol free and has no sodium. It all adds up to the perfect recipe for losing weight and feeling great. Here are some easy ways to fill up your recipe repertoire with watermelon: Spoil your appetite with a slice of watermelon before your meal. Being mostly water, this appetizer will help curb your hunger by satisfying your
taste buds. Pair watermelon with a protein-rich food, such as shrimp or peanut butter, and you have the perfect combination for weight management. Add a slice of juicy watermelon to chicken sandwiches, or try it on a turkey sandwich instead of tomato. To p g r i l l e d s a l m o n w i t h a watermelon salsa. Start a meal with a watermelon soup seasoned with mint, ginger and lemon. Satisfy a late-night sweet tooth with watermelon sorbet made from fresh watermelon, lime juice and a touch of sugar or sugar substitute. Shrimp Watermelon Sate Makes 4 servings 1/2 cup seasoned rice vinegar 1/2 cup chunky peanut butter 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger 1 teaspoon soy sauce or to taste 1 dash hot pepper sauce or to taste 16 shrimp jumbo, cleaned, poached and chilled 16 pieces 2 inch cubes seedless watermelon
1 serving fresh basil leaves or baby romaine leaves for garnish Slowly blend seasoned rice vinegar into peanut butter until completely blended. Stir in garlic, ginger and soy sauce until mixed well. Season with hot pepper sauce to taste. Pour all but 2 tablespoons dressing
over shrimp and toss to coat them well. Chill for 1 hour. To serve, alternate shrimp and watermelon cubes on 4 skewers, and baste with remaining dressing. Serve over fresh basil leaves or romaine leaves.

Prepare your car for winter with these simple tips Getting ready for winter is no small feat. It takes time and planning to make sure your family and your home are ready to brave the elements. But is your car as ready as you are? If you haven’t thought about preparations for your vehicle, these simple tips will help you prepare for the colder months ahead. * Check your tires. You depend on your tires more during the winter than any other season. So before the roads get slick, check your tires to be sure they aren’t worn and that they are properly inflated. You should be able to find the proper tire pressure on the inside of your driver’s side door. Once you’re sure your tire pressure is appropriate, make a note to check again later in the winter. Cold air will
cause the air in your tires to compress and may cause your tires to lose pressure. * Check your brakes. Your brakes will work harder once the icy conditions of winter set in. Make sure they are up to the task by bringing your vehicle in to your mechanic for a thorough brake inspection. * Wash and wax your car at a professional car wash. Putting your car through the car wash during the sloppiest season of the year may seem a strange idea but a thorough wash can remove harmful compounds that may cause damage when mixed with sand and road salt. Experts from the International Carwash Association also recommend a coat of wax for an extra layer of protection from the elements. Besides protecting your car, you’ll also be protecting the environment. Professional car washes can save up to 20 percent of the amount of water you’d use by washing your car at home. They do this by treating and reusing their water, rather than releasing toxic chemicals and grime into the storm drains, which can often occur when you wash your car yourself. You can

It’s good practice to stay on top of fluids such as oil, windshield washer or transmission fluid. But in the winter, no fluid is more important than your coolant because, if you’re out of coolant, you’re out of heat. Your owner’s manual will tell you how much coolant you need as well and provide the correct blend. It’s also never a bad idea to keep an additional bottle of coolant in your car for emergencies. * Test your battery. A lack of coolant will stop your heater from working and so will a dead battery. Before you head out this winter, be sure your battery is working properly. No one wants to be stranded by the side of the road with a dead battery and, in the cold winter months, being stranded could be dangerous. * Check your wipers. You checked the wiper fluid along with your other fluids but don’t forget the wipers themselves. all the preparation in the world can’t prevent a winter emergency. If you find yourself stranded by the side of the road, a winter survival kit can be very helpful. Include an ice scraper/ brush, extra blankets or clothes - including hats and gloves - snacks and bottled water and a first aid kit. A small shovel can come in handy if you get stuck and a bag of cat litter can be used to provide needed traction for your tires. Getting your vehicle ready for winter while temperatures are still mild is a proactive approach to preventive maintenance that helps ensure safety, reliability and fewer unexpected repairs when severe winter weather strikes. By planning ahead you can ensure that your family and your car will be in for a smooth ride all winter long.

New Things for New Years: the Challenge By Christi Bowers This is a challenge for you to do new things on New Years Day to start off the New Year right. If you just do anything, no matter how crazy, no matter how stupid, no matter how unlike you- you’re making your beginning to changing things for the better for 2015. You may think that nothing will change if you do something different, but you will never know until you try. And, the silliest things may be the ones that do the most good for you. I am going to give you a list of potential things you could do on January 1, 2015 (or January 1st of any year). Try any ten out of fifteen of these, or come up with some on your own. Brainstorm. Get together with a friend. Make it an activity for New Years day. Just do it, and come up with the ideas and then make them happen! 1. Call a relative you haven’t spoken to for the past year. Surprise them! Stop saying that if they wanted to talk to you, they would have called you. Stop worrying that they still hold a grudge for something you did ten years ago. Start the reconnection, and see what happens! 2. Visit a relative that you don’t often visit. Call first, or just show up! So what if they aren’t there, at least you made the effort! If they are, they may be truly surprised and gracious to see you! 3. Go to an old folk’s home and offer to volunteer for an hour doing anything they need. If you have a talent, you could offer to sing for an hour or do magic tricks for an hour.
4. Go up to one person in Walmart or any store that you don’t know, and introduce yourself and make a new friend. If all the stores around you are closed on New Year’s day, then just take a walk in your neighborhood and talk to someone. This might be best done in daylight hours! 5. Call a charity and make a $10 donation. (You could give more if you can afford it.) 6. Say one nice thing to someone you care about. 7. Wear something totally out of context for yourself. If you always wear jeans, wear a dress. If you always wear coat and tie, put on some jeans. 8. Make a recording of yourself singing, and send it to a record company. If you have a different talent, do that. For instance, if you write poetry, send a poem to a publishing company or submit to a new website. 9. If you’re a content producer, write an article for a subject you
have never tackled, or a new category like finance. 10. Go New Years day carolling. Go to your neighbor’s houses and start singing songs outside their doorstep! Sing songs that celebrate the new year! 11. Take a drive down a road you have never been on before, and enjoy the view. 12. Instead of using lights, use candles all evening long once it gets dark on New Years day. 13. Say one romantic thing to your partner. You could even write a small poem. Who cares if it rhymes. Let me tell you that just getting any poem can melt someone’s heart, even if it doesn’t make any sense and isn’t anywhere near being a poetic masterpiece. 14. If you’re a child, offer to do the dishes. Do some chore other than what is normally asked of you. 15. Go outside and take a walk. Don’t come back until you learn at least one new thing about your neighborhood.

California State Parks 2015 Annual Pass Program Brings Back an Old Favorite, Introduces Tahoe Regional Pass Today, California State Parks is launching the Annual Park Pass Program, bringing back the popular “Golden Poppy” and introducing a new Tahoe area regional pass. The Annual Park Pass Program consists of four different passes with a variety of admissions to parks statewide, and price points designed to meet visitor’s individual needs. Specifically, the 2015 annual passes include: * “California Explorer” Annual Pass ($195.00): Offers vehicle entrance to 134 state parks, including the Southern California beaches along the Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego Coasts. * “Golden Poppy” Annual Pass ($125.00): This popular pass is making a comeback, and includes vehicle entrance to 112 state parks. * “Tahoe Regional” Annual Pass ($75.00): This new regional pass was created this year specifically for one of the jewels of the state, the Lake Tahoe region. The pass includes admission to D.L. Bliss State Park, Ed Z’Berg Sugar Pine Point State Park, Emerald Bay State Park, Kings Beach
State Recreation Area and Donner Memorial State Park. * “Historian Passport” ($50.00): Includes admission for up to four people to State Historic Parks that generally charge a per-person admission fee. Pass holders will be able to tour a California missions, see where the gold rush happened and experience Native American culture. * “Off Highway Vehicle” Day Use Annual Pass ($50): unchanged from last year. Annual Passes are available in the following: * California State Parks Online Store * Park Pass Sales Office at 1416 9th Street, Room 144 in Sacramento On Monday January 5, 2015, passes will be available at state park units where fees are collected. All of these passes are valid for a floating 12-month period from the date of purchase. The 2015 Annual Passes (Surf Explorer, 150th Commemorative, California Park Experience), are available for purchase until December 31, 2015 at walk-in locations, and
will be honored for a full year after the date of purchase. Sales of the 2015passes will be discontinued on January 1, 2016. Smart Fitness & Exercise Tips to Help You Stick with Your New Year’s Resolution By Ellie Perico It is well known that some of the most common New Years resolutions are to eat healthier, lose weight, get in shape, etc. So, as my first blog in several weeks (due to a WAY too busy holiday season) I figured I would interview some of my closest friends and co-workers and ask them what the smartest diet and exercise tips they had to offer. These tips come from people that have fought the weight loss battle and won so take them and apply them to your daily life. They just may help you stick with that New Year’s resolution after all... or at least stick with it longer than you expected! Since I got so many responses, there will be a part 2 & a part 3 to this post! 1. Save money and buy in bulk BUT separate out portion sizes into small, snack size sandwich bags. This not only saves money, it is also helping you eat healthier by minimizing how much you eat. If you eat out of the large containers, you will liable to eat much more than just one or even two servings. The snacks that often come in those 100 calorie packs also tend to be not so healthy choices. Instead of eating 100 calories of mini Oreos, Page 6
crackers, etc, separate out bags of almonds, dried fruit, whole wheat crackers, etc. 2. If you are not feeling like working out, try and remind yourself of the feeling you get when you are done. More often than not, you feel 100 times better and more refreshed than if you had opted to forgo your workout. 3. Retrain your appetite. Instead of eating when you are bored and when you are not really hungry, wait about 10 minutes before you decide to dive into a meal. It is common for people to eat just because it is lunch time or eat out of boredom. Go for a walk, make phone calls, answer emails and, if you are still hungry, then eat. 4. Try to plan your meals at least a day or two in advance, if not a week in advance. It sounds difficult but it’s really not. Make several chicken breasts on Sunday night and separate them out. Then make some whole grain rice and maybe grill some veggies. Many foods will keep in your refrigerator for at least a week and you can eat these foods as a lunch or dinner. Make a chicken sandwich on Monday, Chicken Parmesan for dinner Tuesday, fajitas on Wednesday, etc.

It’ll help you avoid poor food choices when you don’t have anything ready to eat at hand. 5. If you are on a diet, focused on your New Years resolution or recently started a strict exercise regimen and you slip, do not give up!! Move on and work twice as hard the next day to make up for it. We all slip sometimes.. 6. If you joined a gym, signed up for classes or got yourself a personal trainer recently, try and pay for the memberships or fees up front and in advance. Knowing that you have already forked over all of that cash will give you the incentive to keep going and not miss. 7. Put a mirror on your fridge! When you are about to reach in there for some impulsive eating (boy am I all too familiar with that!), look yourself in the eye and make sure you are really hungry and really want to do that. Believe it or not, it is helpful and helps you confront what’s really driving you to food. 8. Say no to the little things. Avoid eating out of the candy jar at work, grabbing an extra serving at lunch, eating that sample at the grocery store, etc. Little bites like these can add anywhere from 75 - 150 extra
calories a day to your diet. In about a month, that adds up to just over a pound gained (or lost if you avoid them!) 9. Bet on it. A lot of people at work and at places of employment of friends of mine have started a Biggest Loser contest in the new year. They put $50 each into a pot on the first day. Then they diet and exercise for the next 30 - 90 days. At the end, the winner gets all of the money. If even just 10 people join, that’s $500 you win! 10. Eat slow. Eating slow can help you feel full much faster, helping you eat less at each meal. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the point where your body will tell you your full so give yourself time to get there before it is too late and you stuff yourself silly!

CASA fashion show Raises $200,000 Friends of CASA, a fundraising auxiliary of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), hosted its 2014 Holiday Luncheon, at The St. Regis Monarch Beach in Dana Point; the event netted more than $200,000 that will go directly to supporting CASA’s mission. Top Tier Diamond Starfish Sponsors of this event included Microsemi, Lugano Diamonds, and Don and Soogie Kang. The elegant event was held during the day, in the middle of the week AND during the Holiday Season – they had an amazing attendance of 520 women and men, which is quite impressive for this time of year! Guests were able to enjoy an exquisite lunch and champagne reception with a fashion show presented by MaxMara as well as a premium silent auction. One lucky winner of the opportunity drawing, sponsored by Lugano Diamonds, went home with a beautiful Pearl Necklace with Diamond Clasp that contained 13mm Tahitian, White South Sea and Golden pearls as well as round brilliant diamonds valued at $18,000. CASA Board Member Patty Juarez, who serves as the Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Wells Fargo Regional Commercial Banking Office, and current Chairwoman of the Orange County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, chaired the Luncheon and was assisted by a team of nearly 60 women. The day’s festivities also included trees adorned with “starfish ornaments” that detailed the wishes of foster youth that were available to fund for the holidays. Guests listened attentively when keynote speaker Debbi Swerdlow, a CASA for the past three years, spoke of her personal journey with her physically disabled foster youth. Consistent with CASA’s call to action, “I am for the Child,” Swerdlow, expressed her continued fulfillment in supporting and advocating for the youths in the foster care system, and how doing so brings a profound meaning and perspective to her life. The lights went low and the fashion show began. The runway show took us on a journey through a few of the worlds of MaxMara with a preview of MaxMara’s new Resort 2015 Collection. The S’ Collection is designed for easy living along with its innovative CUBE Siberian Goose down Coats. The Sportmax Collection of Resort Fall styles are straight off the streets of Milan and finally the “must have” Max Marra Winter Coat collection quenched everyone’s Holiday desires. Lunch was served and along with the lovely champagne and Chardonnay wine, guests started with a Butter Leaf Lettuce, Charred Roasted Tomato, Crumbled Feta, salad served with a Oregano-Basil Dressing. The entrée gave us Grilled Herb Crusted Chicken Breast with Organic Faro, Capers and Tomatoes, Herb-Lemon Beurre Blanc sauce. Dessert was even more divine with an Exotic Dome of White Chocolate Mousse, with Chocolate Dacquoise, and Caramel Rum Sauce along with a Pineapple Compote, simply decedent! Friends of CASA are committed to raising funds for CASA of Orange County’s mentor-advocate program for abused and neglected children in the foster care system. Through the annual Holiday Luncheon, the Friends of CASA raise awareness of the CASA program, recruiting volunteers and long-term donors to CASA. Over the years, this dedicated group of women has been responsible for raising well over 1.5 million dollars that has gone directly to addressing the needs of some of our community’s most vulnerable children. Court Appointed Special Advocates of Orange County is a privatelyfunded non-profit organization that serves severely abused, neglected and abandoned children through the recruitment, training and continued support of volunteers who advocate and mentor these children, representing their best interest in the courtroom and other settings. Founded in 1985, with major support from the Junior League of Orange County, they serve annually approximately 1,000 of the children who move through the court system as a direct cause of abuse and neglect. Making wellness programs work for your wallet and lifestyle By now you’ve probably heard the message loud and clear: Staying well through preventive steps is cheaper, healthier and easier for everyone than waiting until a health condition becomes an issue.
