THE COMMUNITY IS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN PUBLIC MEETINGS TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF SAN CLEMENTE’S BEACHES, PARKS AND RECREATION The San Clemente Beaches, Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting public meetings to get the public’s input and help establish priorities for the future of beaches, parks, trails, recreation facilities, programs, and services in San Clemente. Pamela Passow, Assistant Director of Beaches, Parks and Recreation Department said, “This 10 year Beaches, Parks, and Recreation Master Plan will set the framework for decision makers in the planning, maintenance, and development and/ or rehabilitation of our beaches, parks, and recreation facilities.” The City has hired PROS Consulting, Inc., a national parks and recreation management consulting firm to lead the project. The meetings will be held at the San Clemente Community Center located at 100 N. Calle Seville, scheduled as follows: Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. “The City values public input as it seeks to maximize your enjoyment of
our many public facilities. I encourage everyone to get involved in the process and share their opinions on current and future beaches, parks and recreation projects. If you can’t attend a meeting, please share your comments online at the website
www.scparksplan.com,” said Mayor Bob Baker. In addition to these public meetings, the Consulting Team will be conducting a statistically valid survey to households throughout the City and interviews and focus groups

The City of San Clemente is offering a surveillance camera loaner program. Surveillance cameras are a great way to provide security for your home or workplace. As well as providing you with video footage of any events that may happen, they also act as a visible deterrent to criminals and assist the local authorities in their investigations. Through the City’s loaner program, members of the community can try out a surveillance camera before they buy. The City has purchased two (2) Ring Stick-Up Cameras at a discounted price to use as loaner cameras. The camera is weatherresistant and has a wire-free mount to see, hear and speak with your guests. All systems are easy to set up and do not require a professional to install. The loaner program allows residents to check out the camera for a one-week period. Due to demand, a wait list may be created but the availability will be first-come, first-serve. Residents will need to sign a hold harmless release form
before checking out the loaner camera. After the one-week loan, residents who want to purchase one will receive $25 off the $199 purchase price when purchased through Ring by using the promo code, 7sanclemente at ring.com. Ring has been working with hundreds of police departments and neighborhood watch groups across the country. An example of a city Ring has worked with recently is the City of Lafayette in the Bay Area on a similar loaner program. Since Lafayette implemented their program they have seen a considerable drop in residential burglaries. Del Mar Reopens Third Year of Second Season

How about a second season with cooler weather, less traffic, robust increases in Del Mar’s on-track and overall handle and a massive $1-million Pick Six winner? Del Mar’s “second season” – called the “Bing Crosby Season” after the seaside track’s iconic founder – began last Friday, November 11, for a 15-day run that will end Sunday, December 4. The track opened with a special Veterans’ Day Salute to past and present veterans. The opening event included sky divers, the unfurling of the huge Holiday Bowl flag, a Pinups for Patriots fashion contest, a country concert and food from Cali Comfort Bar-B-Q. The Opening Day Stars & Stripes Fashion Contest drew more than 100 contestants who participated in categories including Most Patriotic and Best Pin-Up or Celebrity Look. Pin-Up contestants wore a variety of glamorous looks from bygone days. The Bing Crosby Grand Prize winner was Wendy Venable of Boulevard, CA, who competed in the Most Patriotic category, and was awarded a one-night stay at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar and dinner for two at Addison Restaurant. Special events continued on the opening Saturday, November 12, with a post-race concert featuring star Ben Harper with his group The Innocent Criminals. On Sunday, November 13, the first of four “Free & Fun Sundays” offered free admission, free seats, free programs and discounted drinks. The track’s three-day attendance tally was up by 6.9 percent, increasing from 22,170 to 23,709. The daily average rose from 7,390 to 7,903. After the three-day opening, Del Mar will have four-day weeks – Thursday through Sunday – until the end of the season. First post daily will be at 12:30 p.m. on all days with the exception of Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, November 24) when racing begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. in time for fans to make it home for a turkey dinner. Highlighting the 15 days of thoroughbred sport are 14 stakes races, starting with Opening Day’s Kathryn Crosby Stakes for fillies and mares; a pair of Grade I features – the Hollywood Derby (Saturday, December 3) and the Matriarch Stakes (Sunday, December 4); and Page 6
eight other graded races. Other extras are a reggae fest led by Iration (Saturday, November 19), College Day at the Races (Saturday, November 19), a craft beer and cider festival along with a food truck roundup (Saturday, November 26) and a deluxe fleece blanket free giveaway (Saturday, December 3), a “Taste of the Turf Club” feed every Sunday, “Daybreak at Del Mar” breakfasts Saturday mornings (8 to 10 am), free Thursday admissions for all seniors and a family fun run and a puppy adoption event on Thanksgiving morning in partnership with the Helen Woodward Animal Center. According to Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s president and general manager, Joe Harper, “The fall racing season at Del Mar has taken up its own special spot now on the Southern California racing calendar. It’s a low-key happening for real racing fans, and it is growing warmer and friendlier as we go along. Del Mar in the summer is great; Del Mar in the fall just feels good all over.” Del Mar Thoroughbred Club opened in 1937 with owner Bing Crosby there to greet the first fan. Its spectacular views, balmy climate and warm ambiance have made it a destination for celebrities, horse aficionados and others seeking elegant entertainment. While the turkey typically receives all the attention at holiday gatherings, rounding out your meal with the perfect snacks, sides and desserts is the key to a successful feast. Without the right preparation and execution, however, your bird could fall short. Finding a turkey that’s just the right size for your expected party is the start to a successful gathering. One common rule of thumb is to buy 1 pound of turkey per person – so for a 10-person meal, purchase a 10-pound turkey. Don’t forget that nearly everyone loves leftovers, so you may consider buying a few pounds more than necessary. 2. Be patient. If you opt for a frozen turkey, don’t rush the thawing process. For larger turkeys, it can take days to defrost properly. 3. Timing is everything. Finding the right amount of time for your turkey to spend in the oven is crucial but not always the easiest thing to do. For an 8-12-pound bird, aim for 2.5-3.5 hours; 12-16 pounds for 3.5-4 hours; 16-20 pounds for 4-4.5 hours, and so on. The key is bringing the turkey to a temperature reading of 170 F. 4. Let it rest. Instead of pulling the turkey out of the oven and
immediately carving it, give it a chance to rest for 20-30 minutes, which allows the juices to soak into the meat and moisten it up. Caramel Macchiato Ice Cream Pie Servings: 10 Prep time: 20 minutes Total time: 4 hours, 55 minutes Crust 9 graham crackers 1 cup finely chopped almonds 1/4 cup granulated sugar 4 tablespoons butter, melted Filling 1 container (1.5 quarts) Dreyer’s or Edy’s Grand Coffee Ice Cream, softened 1/2 cup Nestlé Toll House SemiSweet Chocolate Morsels, chopped, divided 1/2 cup Nestlé La Lechera Dulce de Leche 1 tub (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed 1/2 cup sliced almonds, toasted To make crust: Heat oven to 325 F. In food processor, add graham crackers and pulse until crackers resemble fine crumbs. Add crumbs to bowl along with chopped almonds, sugar and butter; stir to combine. Press into bottom and up sides of 9-inch deep-dish pie plate. Bake 5 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely. To make filling: Spread ice cream into cooled pie crust, smoothing out over bottom. Sprinkle with half of the chopped morsels. Heat dulce de leche in microwavesafe bowl on high for a few seconds to soften; stir. Pour over chocolate morsels, spreading evenly. Spoon whipped topping over dulce de leche, covering entire surface of pie. Sprinkle with remaining morsels and almonds. Freeze 30 minutes. Remove pie from freezer and cover with foil. CONSTRUCTION WORK BEGINS ON NORTH BEA CH OPPORTUNISTIC SAND REPLENISHMENT PROJECT
The City of San Clemente will commence work on the North Beach Opportunistic Sand Replenishment project on November 28, 2016. The project work will consist of unloading and spreading beach sand that will be obtained from the County’s Lower Santa Ana River Dredging Project. The City will bring 12,000 cubic yards of sand to North Beach over
the course of approximately two weeks. The sand will be pushed above the mean high tide line for the winter months. The project work hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and is expected to be completed in early December 2016. During the construction, the contractor will access the beach through the
Capistrano Shores Mobile Home Park near the train station in North Beach. The City of San Clemente has a Coastal Development Permit from the California Coastal Commission that allows the City to receive tested and approved sand during the project timeframe that will have minimal impact on biological resources.
City lifeguards have been monitoring and documenting existing wave and surf conditions for two months prior to the beach nourishment project, and will continue to do so for two months afterwards. Discovery Cube’s Gala Raises Over $1.1 Million for Science Education More than 350 Orange County philanthropists, business and community leaders gathered on for Discovery Cube’s ‘Wild West at the Cube’ annual gala, which commemorated the Cube’s growth throughout the year and raised $1,151,425 for science education. The celebratory event, held on-site at Discovery Cube, kicked off with a cocktail reception featuring tray passed hors d’oeuvres, opportunity drawings, a trick roper greeting guests, as well as poker and a saloon girl dance trio in keeping with the Wild West theme. The dinner began with the live auction and fund-a-need, followed by the award presentations. At the event, Discovery Cube honored the Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club and Jay Witzling, former vice president and deputy program manager of Boeing’s Delta Rocket program, with prestigious Cube Awards for their outstanding contributions to the Discovery Science Foundation and Discovery Cube. The Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club, who received Discovery Cube’s 2016 Arnold O. Beckman Award, are among the biggest supporters for the Cube and played a huge part in the creation of the “Science of Hockey” exhibit. Talking turkey: It’s platter season What’s your idea of the perfect Thanksgiving meal? A big family buffet, or perhaps an intimate evening with a few close friends? Thanksgiving brings us together from near and far for all sorts of fun-filled traditions that are uniquely our own. And while those traditions may vary somewhat as families grow and our lives change over time, there’s one constant at the heart of Thanksgiving entertaining the beloved turkey platter. “Turkey platters really are the Christmas tree of Thanksgiving,” says Keith Winkler, product marketing manager at dinnerware giant Replacements, Ltd. “When you talk about Thanksgiving, I think most Americans picture that iconic Norman Rockwell painting with the mother serving the perfect turkey on a huge platter. Even though that image has been reinterpreted in so many ways as times have changed, the platter has always remained the centerpiece of the gathering, even for those who by-pass the bird to serve another main course for their Thanksgiving meal.” Winkler notes there’s also a strong sentimental attachment to this seasonal favorite. Turkey platters often become heirloom pieces, handed down in many families,
making the platter even more special. Turkey dinnerware history 101 The history behind Turkey patterns and ultimately the iconic platter is literally as old as the holiday itself. When Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving official back in 1863, English potters seized the opportunity to target the growing American market by producing turkey-themed dinner plates and platters. Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 3 hours, 35 minutes Servings: 16 Pumpkin Cake: 1 package (2-layer size) yellow cake mix 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted 1/4 cup milk 2 eggs 2 teaspoons McCormick Pumpkin Pie Spice 1 cup chocolate chips Caramel Sauce: 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter 1 teaspoon McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Pumpkin Pie Spice Spray inside of 6-quart slow cooker with no stick cooking spray. For the Cake, mix all ingredients in large bowl. Pour into greased slow cooker. Place towel over slow cooker and cover with lid. Cook 3 1/2 hours on low or until cake is almost set. Meanwhile, for the Caramel Sauce, cook and stir all ingredients in small saucepan on medium-high heat 5 minutes or until sauce is smooth. Carefully remove slow cooker insert and place on wire rack. Pour 1/2 of the Caramel Sauce over the cake. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes to cool slightly. Serve cake with remaining sauce and ice cream or whipped cream, if desired. Substitution: Use 1 cup chopped candy bars in place of the chocolate chips.

Stir in bread cubes and sausage-vegetable mixture. Cover. Cook 45 minutes on high. Uncover and stir. Cook, uncovered, 30 minutes longer.

Did you know that according to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, nearly as many aesthetically-oriented consumers are bothered by their double chin (67%) as by lines and wrinkles around the eyes (69%)?
