The holiday season is filled with gatherings of friends and family. As invitations to different holiday events begin to flood your calendar, one of the biggest challenges is figuring out how to attend everything. UCI MIND ANNOUNCES MARIA SHRIVER AS CELEBRITY HONOREE FUCIOR 8 TH ANNUAL “A DECEM B ER TO REMEM B ER ” GALA MIND, Orange County’s only state and notes that Orange County is particularly susceptible
federally-funded Alzheimer’s disease research center, has announced that Maria Shriver, internationally renowned Alzheimer’s disease advocate, founder of The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement, and former First Lady of California, will be honored at its 8th annual A December to Remember Gala on Saturday, December 2, 2017. “Maria Shriver is a champion for Alzheimer’s disease research, and is a voice of strength for many families and individuals who are suffering as a result of this disease,” says Dr. Joshua Grill, Co-Director of UCI MIND. “We are proud to partner with Ms. Shriver and honor her important work that continues to shine a light on Alzheimer’s disease.” Shriver is the founder of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement (WAM), a global alliance of individuals, organizations, researchers and industry leaders who are committed to studying Alzheimer’s disease and why it disproportionately affects women. “Every 66 seconds a new brain develops Alzheimer’s. Two-thirds of them belong to women, and no one knows why that is,” explains Shriver, who began her advocacy for the cause when her father was diagnosed with the disease in 2003. “This is a devastating disease that must be stopped. Through the support of local communities and research organizations such as UCI MIND, we will continue to work towards a cure.” Shriver’s organization seeks to bolster scientific pursuits to understand why women are at increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease, and to help all people take steps to improve brain health. WAM also raises money to support gender-based research, and shares stories and resources for patients and loved ones battling Alzheimer’s. Dr. Frank LaFerla, Dean of UCI’s School of Biological Sciences and Co-Director of UCI MIND,

Lana Peterson, 37, of Orange, has been reappointed to the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board, where she has served since 2016. Peterson has been director of public affairs at the Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center since 2017, where she has held several positions since 2010, including senior public affairs representative and senior communications specialist. She held several positions at Cox Communications from 2004 to 2010, including senior communications specialist, communications specialist and public relations coordinator. She earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Chapman University. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $250 per diem. Peterson is registered without party preference. Daniel Selmi, 67, of Newport Beach, has been reappointed to the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board, where he has served since 2016. Selmi has been a professor of law at Loyola Law School, Los Angeles since

Real at the U.S. District Court, Central District of California from 1975 to 1976. Four-step PLAN Helps Shoppers Save on Black Friday Retailers call the day after Thanksgiving “Black Friday,” because the holiday spending that happens that day generally moves their balance sheet into profitability and “the black.” Barbara Stark, director of community development and education at the national non-profit American Debt Counseling, Inc., serving clients throughout California, recommends following her simple, four-step P.L.A.N. during the holiday shopping season to keep your holiday budget in the black as well. “Retailers offer all kinds of deals to kick-start their all-important holiday sales numbers,” Stark explains. “The key is to have your own game plan for the day so that you take advantage of the opportunities to save on your holiday shopping without being tempted to spend more than you should.”
Stark recommends following her simple four-step P.L.A.N.: Prepare a strategy that puts your financial resources to their best use. Realistically outline your holiday obligations and how much you have to spend. Just like at the grocery store, you’ll spend more at the mall without a list. Next, decide what gifts on your list are “must have” and set your sights on getting them for the best price while they are still available. Layaway is a good alternative to credit cards for expensive purchases if the store or online site’s fee is less than 10 percent of the value of the items. You can reap the same bargains and enjoy the same selection as shopping on credit as well as the added bonus of knowing it is all paid for when you take it home. Layaway
is also a good way to curb impulse buying later in the holiday season by enabling you to buy the gift you really want at a good price. Each store has its own rules and it is important to read the fine print carefully to be sure you understand the fees and cancellation policies. Avoid using credit. Shoppers spend 30% more on average when shopping with credit cards rather than cash. Also think twice before opening a new line of credit for a discount on that day’s purchases since any fees associated with a new credit card can end up costing you more than the money you’re saving. Cash, checks and debit cards are the best choice,
but if you must use credit, choose the card that gives you the lowest interest rate and most benefits, such as reward points or extended warranties. Navigate the deals. In their efforts to get you into their stores and not the competitions’, retailers advertise their sales. Many post them online as well as place ads in the paper. There are also internet sites devoted to announcing Black Friday sales in advance. Some stores open early or even on Thanksgiving Day and you should begin looking for the deals at the start of Thanksgiving week to be ready to put your holiday shopping and savings PLAN into action.

In medium saucepan, heat cream, coffee creamer, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cloves, brown sugar and 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Stir frequently to dissolve sugar. Bring to boil then
immediately remove from heat. Set aside to rest 10 minutes. In large bowl, whisk egg yolks until frothy. Slowly whisk in cream mixture then whisk in pumpkin puree. Set 16 medium oven-proof ramekins in 13-by-9-inch baking pan. Divide custard evenly between dishes. Add boiling water to baking pan halfway up sides of ramekins. Bake 40-55 minutes, or until center is set but still jiggles. Remove from water bath; cool about 15 minutes then refrigerate 2-3 hours. When ready to serve, remove ramekins from refrigerator and dust tops with remaining granulated sugar. Caramelize sugar with kitchen torch or place under hot broiler 1-2 minutes. Let cool 1 minute and top with whipped dairy topping to serve. (Family Features)

KidWorks Foundation for Success Luncheon Raises More Than $768,000 Photos by Ann Chatillon A record of more than $768,000 was raised at the 2017 KidWorks’ Foundation for Success (FFS) Luncheon held at the Doubletree Hotel in Santa Ana – all to help fund afterschool educational and leadership development programs. This is the largest sum raised since the inception of the luncheon in 2007 and represents much of the after-school program budget funding academic enrichment, tutoring, leadership development, and college readiness programs at the expanded KidWorks Dan Donahue Center. Attendees always look forward to this event as the luncheon is emotionally charged because of the positive effects of KidWorks has on the challenged children served by the organization. The prestigious 2017 Dan Donahue Leadership Award was presented to David A. Pyle, Philanthropist, Founder/Chief Executive Officer of American Career College and Shareholder of West Coast University. “This very special award recognizes Mr. Pyle’s fervent support for KidWorks’ youth and families,” said David Benavides, KidWorks’ Executive Director. “For decades, Mr. Pyle has been a leader and innovator in the private, postsecondary education community, and he is as passionate about the community as he is about supporting health care and educational programs that aid underserved children and families.” “I have been a supporter of KidWorks because these young men and woman are being developed as our future leaders and will be making a difference in our communities,” said Pyle. “Seeing firsthand the interaction of the kids, family members, staff and volunteers as they grow is inspiring and something I am proud to be a part of.” The menu was purposefully simple; a salad with beef, rolls plus dessert and the centerpieces were Uncle Dan stuffed bears, named after Dan Donahue, the late benefactor of KidWorks and namesake on the Dan Donahue Center. The event’s keynote speaker Chad Williams, author of the bestselling book, “SEAL of God,” talked about his coming to terms with the direction of his life and his subsequent journey through the grueling Naval Ops training. He was one of only 13 to make it to graduation day and has served his country on multiple deployments to defend freedom. Also recognized at the event was Alfredo Padilla, one of KidWorks many amazing student success stories. He is a recent California State University, Northridge graduate, where he earned his degree in kinesiology. Since its inception in 2007, KidWorks’ annual Foundation for Success event has raised nearly $5.8 million to fund programs at the KidWorks Dan Donahue Center. As a 501(C)(3) nonprofit, KidWorks offers educational support, leadership and character-building programs, and health and fitness activities that begin with preschoolers and follow youth into their college years. KidWorks’ main building, the Dan Donahue Center, serves the highest number of children and offers a state-licensed preschool. In total, KidWorks operates four centers that have become safe havens in gang-heavy, highcrime and overcrowded residential areas in central Santa Ana. the last horse finished the jump-off. Supporting the growth of young horses and young riders, as well as new horse and rider pairs, the Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series Final was the ideal opportunity for Richard Spooner to encourage his eight-year-old mount, Quirado RC,

owned by Rancho Corazon, LLC, to be competitive. Fifth in the jump-off, Spooner executed the first and fastest double-clean ride, stopping the clock at 35.55. Soon afterward, twentyone-year-old Chandler Meadows and her own Damian slipped into the second spot, clean in a time of 38.06, relegating Jenni McAllister and Sweet Chocolate PJ’s double-clean effort to third. Meadows noted that she gained solid miles during the 2017 season. “This series has been a building block for me this year. Damian is a bit younger and I’m still a bit inexperienced. This has helped me build a solid foundation while competing through difficult tracks over fences that are not too big.” Spooner spoke highly of his mount. “Quirado is an eight-year-old, and he has only been jumping for a little over two years. I’m very excited about his future. He is very special and very careful. Standing a bit taller than eighteen hands, he has a wonderful mouth,” the veteran show jumper said. “I’ve tried to keep things simple with him in terms of my training regime. Now that I’ve gotten him to follow my hand I’ve been able to find a way around his size. I’m getting more and more confident with him. Speed was a difficulty in the beginning due to his size and youth, but over the last
few months it has come together. I had a plan to stick on the inside bend and have faith in him.” Looking into the future, Spooner wisely said, “I’m optimistic that Quirado will do the 1.50m classes next year. I have the same plan with my other horses. I’m hoping to move them up. With any new string of horses, you go through ups and downs, so I’m hoping for more ups than downs.” And he summed up his victory with a comment about the show and facility, where for many years, he has chosen to end his season. “The Las Vegas National is a great place to show, in that it’s designed with horses and horse sport in mind.
