Your holiday shopping guide : 4 ways to cut through the clutter this holiday season

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but for you and your family, it’s also the busiest. The holidays bring trips to book, parties to plan, meals to cook, homes to clean and of course, work and school schedules to manage. On top of that, you have to tackle perhaps the most daunting task of all - the holiday shopping list. Can it be done? Of course it can! But you can make it a little easier with these four tips guaranteed to cut through the clutter and streamline holiday shopping. * Make your list and check it twice. Along with making a holiday budget, create a detailed list of everyone you need to buy for. Include specific sizes and the dollar amount you plan to spend on each person to save you time when you hit the store. You can also save your list to your phone for easy access right at your fingertips. * Stock up and spread cheer this year. Make sure to stock up on a few generic, gender-neutral gifts to have

on hand during the holidays should you receive an unexpected gift from your next-door neighbor or mailman. This way, you will be prepared to spread the joy of gifting no matter who shares it first! * Decide which deals belong on the naughty and nice list. Use your smartphone or other mobile device to research a store’s holiday deals ahead of time. For example, for a limited time Net10 Wireless is offering at Best Buy a free ZTE Unico smartphone and three months of unlimited talk, text and data up to 3 GB at 4G LTE speeds - all for $99 with in-store activation! (after reaching high speed data allocation service continues at 2G speed). A gift worth staying off the naughty list for! * Make sure the gifts under your tree are price match guarantee. Most stores offer price match guarantees throughout the year, but especially during the holiday season. Hold on to your receipts and keep an eye out for new ads and sales as the holidays get

The holiday season is filled with gatherings of friends and family. As invitations to different holiday events begin to flood your calendar, one of the biggest challenges is figuring out how to attend everything. But for some, hectic schedules and public gatherings fill the holiday season with additional stress as they are combined with low self-esteem or lack of confidence, making this time of year a nightmare. If the holiday season creates worry and stress for you, rather than joy and excitement, consider these confidence-building tips: * Feel free to say “no.” - You don’t have to attend every party or gathering. If your stress and worries are caused by overbooking, make it a goal to only attend one event each weekend, and possibly one additional event during the week. Be sure to include any family visits or dinners in your tally. Limiting your activities will give you time to recharge and thoroughly enjoy the events you are attending. * Boost your smile. - According to

a 2013 Fixodent survey conducted by Wakefield Research, 38 percent of denture wearers admit to skipping something because they feel selfconscious about their dentures. Whether you’re indulging in tasty treats, socializing or even traveling this holiday season, Fixodent provides you with strong hold and protection, helping to seal out food particles and killing odor-causing bacteria for a clean mouth and fresh breath - so you don’t have to miss any of your holiday activities. Visit www.facebook.com/ Fixodent for helpful tips on keeping socially active this holiday season. * Pick the perfect holiday wear. - Sometimes much of the stress caused by the holiday season is a result of the outfit chosen for the event. For women, high heels look great, but can quickly hurt the feet, making it uncomfortable to stand and socialize for long. Consider wearing beautiful flats or heels that have protective cushioning. Look for dresses that not only make you feel good about how you look, but are also comfortable to wear. For men, a

tie presents a stylish look for a social gathering, but if wearing one feels constricting, try a distinguished look by hanging a scarf over a sport coat, instead. * Enjoy the food and drink. Sometimes when we’re stressed, we tend to overeat or consume too much alcohol. Make a conscious effort to sample the foods and drinks provided at the family dinners and social gatherings you attend without overdoing it. One trick to help achieve this is to use a dessert/appetizer plate for entree items, so you’ll take less. This allows you to better mingle, socialize and enjoy the party, and when you go home, you’ll feel better - both physically and about yourself - giving you confidence to attend the next scheduled event on your holiday calendar. Put stress and worry on the back burner this holiday season and look forward to the social events you’ll attend this year with a smile on your face. -(BPT)

UCI MIND ANNOUNCES MARIA SHRIVER AS CELEBRITY HONOREE FUCIOR 8 TH ANNUAL “A DECEM B ER TO REMEM B ER ” GALA MIND, Orange County’s only state and notes that Orange County is particularly susceptible

federally-funded Alzheimer’s disease research center, has announced that Maria Shriver, internationally renowned Alzheimer’s disease advocate, founder of The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement, and former First Lady of California, will be honored at its 8th annual A December to Remember Gala on Saturday, December 2, 2017. “Maria Shriver is a champion for Alzheimer’s disease research, and is a voice of strength for many families and individuals who are suffering as a result of this disease,” says Dr. Joshua Grill, Co-Director of UCI MIND. “We are proud to partner with Ms. Shriver and honor her important work that continues to shine a light on Alzheimer’s disease.” Shriver is the founder of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement (WAM), a global alliance of individuals, organizations, researchers and industry leaders who are committed to studying Alzheimer’s disease and why it disproportionately affects women. “Every 66 seconds a new brain develops Alzheimer’s. Two-thirds of them belong to women, and no one knows why that is,” explains Shriver, who began her advocacy for the cause when her father was diagnosed with the disease in 2003. “This is a devastating disease that must be stopped. Through the support of local communities and research organizations such as UCI MIND, we will continue to work towards a cure.” Shriver’s organization seeks to bolster scientific pursuits to understand why women are at increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease, and to help all people take steps to improve brain health. WAM also raises money to support gender-based research, and shares stories and resources for patients and loved ones battling Alzheimer’s. Dr. Frank LaFerla, Dean of UCI’s School of Biological Sciences and Co-Director of UCI MIND,

to the pressures of Alzheimer’s disease. “More than 84,000 people in Orange County are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and that number is anticipated to increase 74% by the year 2030,” Dr. LaFerla explains. “The only way to avert this crisis is through research, which is precisely where the proceeds from this event will be applied.” With support from the local community, UCI MIND funds projects that allow researchers to seek out scientific advances that will help identify ways to prevent or slow the onset of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s. “Thanks to the tremendous generosity of our attendees, last year’s gala raised over $375,000 to support innovative research on new studies and clinical trials,” says Dr. LaFerla. “This year, we’ve extended an invitation for guests to attend an exclusive pre-event cocktail reception with Maria Shriver prior to the Gala, along with various unique sponsorship opportunities that we hope will continue to support our research efforts surrounding Alzheimer’s disease.” UCI MIND is one of only 30 NIH-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers in the nation. “The research being done at UCI MIND provides hope for millions of individuals who are affected by this heartbreaking disease,” LaFerla adds. “It’s through attending events like our annual gala or participating in clinical research trials that Orange County residents can, in fact, make a difference and help researchers get closer to a cure.” For more information about the 8th annual A December to Remember Gala, or to inquire about sponsorship opportunities, please visit gala.mind. uci.edu or contact Danny Harper, Senior Director of Development at UCI MIND, at 949-824-3793.

Tips to spruce up your home for the holidays Holidays are when most people open their homes for friends and family. Sharing the season’s greetings is always the priority but these gatherings are also an opportunity to show off improvements made during the year. This is one of the reasons that autumn is a popular time for home improvements. Fifty-two percent of homeowners plan to make home improvements this fall, according to the leading real estate website Zillow. It is also a great time of year for deals as retailers unload inventory to make room for new styles. Creating a warm and inviting atmosphere includes much more than just poinsettias and Santa Claus centerpieces. There are a number of affordable steps homeowners can take to add a real “wow factor” to their holiday entertaining. Kitchen updates The kitchen is commonly one of the busiest rooms during the holidays. Since guests often gather there, it makes sense to make the space the focus for a few improvements before the holidays. Simple and inexpensive updates, such as adding new knobs and handles to cabinets or installing a new backsplash, will make a big difference. Stylish new light fixtures can also give your kitchen a quick facelift that will impress your guests. Install hardwood floors The warmth and beauty of hardPage 6

wood floors can transform the look and feel of your home to create a space that will stun your guests. And unlike carpet, hardwood floors do not stain or wear as easily from inevitable spills and foot traffic that the holidays bring.-Moreover, carpet traps dust, pollen and other particles that can cause allergies and respiratory issues. Visually unique flooring options such as Lumber Liquidators’ Bellawood Bamboo bring together both the aesthetic and practical advantages

The San Clemente News

of hardwood flooring. This flooring carries a 100-year transferable warranty that assures these benefits will be sustained for a lifetime of holiday gatherings. De-clutter It’s important to create inviting open space for guests to enjoy. Decluttering bookshelves and removing miscellaneous furniture can help make a room feel larger and more open, and will allow room for festive seasonal decor. Spending time to organize the refrigerator will make

space for any holiday dishes a guest brings. Improve the entry The front entry provides the first impression of a home, so it’s important to create a stylish, cared-for and welcoming look. Homeowners can complete small projects outside, such as updating house numbers, painting the front door and creating holidaythemed arrangements. Simple decor updates just inside the door - such as adding family photos and new rugs - will add a warm and personal feel.

Four-step PLAN Helps Shoppers Save on Black Friday Retailers call the day after Thanksgiving “Black Friday,” because the holiday spending that happens that day generally moves their balance sheet into profitability and “the black.” Barbara Stark, director of community development and education at the national non-profit American Debt Counseling, Inc., serving clients throughout California, recommends following her simple, four-step P.L.A.N. during the holiday shopping season to keep your holiday budget in the black as well. “Retailers offer all kinds of deals to kick-start their all-important holiday sales numbers,” Stark explains. “The key is to have your own game plan for the day so that you take advantage of the opportunities to save on your holiday shopping without being tempted to spend more than you should.”

Stark recommends following her simple four-step P.L.A.N.: Prepare a strategy that puts your financial resources to their best use. Realistically outline your holiday obligations and how much you have to spend. Just like at the grocery store, you’ll spend more at the mall without a list. Next, decide what gifts on your list are “must have” and set your sights on getting them for the best price while they are still available. Layaway is a good alternative to credit cards for expensive purchases if the store or online site’s fee is less than 10 percent of the value of the items. You can reap the same bargains and enjoy the same selection as shopping on credit as well as the added bonus of knowing it is all paid for when you take it home. Layaway

is also a good way to curb impulse buying later in the holiday season by enabling you to buy the gift you really want at a good price. Each store has its own rules and it is important to read the fine print carefully to be sure you understand the fees and cancellation policies. Avoid using credit. Shoppers spend 30% more on average when shopping with credit cards rather than cash. Also think twice before opening a new line of credit for a discount on that day’s purchases since any fees associated with a new credit card can end up costing you more than the money you’re saving. Cash, checks and debit cards are the best choice,

but if you must use credit, choose the card that gives you the lowest interest rate and most benefits, such as reward points or extended warranties. Navigate the deals. In their efforts to get you into their stores and not the competitions’, retailers advertise their sales. Many post them online as well as place ads in the paper. There are also internet sites devoted to announcing Black Friday sales in advance. Some stores open early or even on Thanksgiving Day and you should begin looking for the deals at the start of Thanksgiving week to be ready to put your holiday shopping and savings PLAN into action.

KidWorks Foundation for Success Luncheon Raises More Than $768,000 Photos by Ann Chatillon A record of more than $768,000 was raised at the 2017 KidWorks’ Foundation for Success (FFS) Luncheon held at the Doubletree Hotel in Santa Ana – all to help fund afterschool educational and leadership development programs. This is the largest sum raised since the inception of the luncheon in 2007 and represents much of the after-school program budget funding academic enrichment, tutoring, leadership development, and college readiness programs at the expanded KidWorks Dan Donahue Center. Attendees always look forward to this event as the luncheon is emotionally charged because of the positive effects of KidWorks has on the challenged children served by the organization. The prestigious 2017 Dan Donahue Leadership Award was presented to David A. Pyle, Philanthropist, Founder/Chief Executive Officer of American Career College and Shareholder of West Coast University. “This very special award recognizes Mr. Pyle’s fervent support for KidWorks’ youth and families,” said David Benavides, KidWorks’ Executive Director. “For decades, Mr. Pyle has been a leader and innovator in the private, postsecondary education community, and he is as passionate about the community as he is about supporting health care and educational programs that aid underserved children and families.” “I have been a supporter of KidWorks because these young men and woman are being developed as our future leaders and will be making a difference in our communities,” said Pyle. “Seeing firsthand the interaction of the kids, family members, staff and volunteers as they grow is inspiring and something I am proud to be a part of.” The menu was purposefully simple; a salad with beef, rolls plus dessert and the centerpieces were Uncle Dan stuffed bears, named after Dan Donahue, the late benefactor of KidWorks and namesake on the Dan Donahue Center. The event’s keynote speaker Chad Williams, author of the bestselling book, “SEAL of God,” talked about his coming to terms with the direction of his life and his subsequent journey through the grueling Naval Ops training. He was one of only 13 to make it to graduation day and has served his country on multiple deployments to defend freedom. Also recognized at the event was Alfredo Padilla, one of KidWorks many amazing student success stories. He is a recent California State University, Northridge graduate, where he earned his degree in kinesiology. Since its inception in 2007, KidWorks’ annual Foundation for Success event has raised nearly $5.8 million to fund programs at the KidWorks Dan Donahue Center. As a 501(C)(3) nonprofit, KidWorks offers educational support, leadership and character-building programs, and health and fitness activities that begin with preschoolers and follow youth into their college years. KidWorks’ main building, the Dan Donahue Center, serves the highest number of children and offers a state-licensed preschool. In total, KidWorks operates four centers that have become safe havens in gang-heavy, highcrime and overcrowded residential areas in central Santa Ana. KidWorks serves 1,000 children, youth and parents weekly and reaches over 4,000 community members annually. For more information, please visit www. kidworksoc.org.

Richard Spooner Pilots Quirado RC to the Win in the $51,800 Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series Final

Richard Spooner and Quirado RC with (l-r) Brandon Seger, Lisa Seger, Monica Ward, Josh Mullins, Melissa Brandes and Lauren Dreyer Photos by McCool With twenty-four of the top point earners in the competitive Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series vying to take home the lion’s share of the $51,800 in prize money, and ten riding fault-free over Oscar Soberon’s course, it was certainly exciting until

the last horse finished the jump-off. Supporting the growth of young horses and young riders, as well as new horse and rider pairs, the Markel Insurance 1.40m Grand Prix Series Final was the ideal opportunity for Richard Spooner to encourage his eight-year-old mount, Quirado RC,

Chandler Meadows and Damian Page 14

owned by Rancho Corazon, LLC, to be competitive. Fifth in the jump-off, Spooner executed the first and fastest double-clean ride, stopping the clock at 35.55. Soon afterward, twentyone-year-old Chandler Meadows and her own Damian slipped into the second spot, clean in a time of 38.06, relegating Jenni McAllister and Sweet Chocolate PJ’s double-clean effort to third. Meadows noted that she gained solid miles during the 2017 season. “This series has been a building block for me this year. Damian is a bit younger and I’m still a bit inexperienced. This has helped me build a solid foundation while competing through difficult tracks over fences that are not too big.” Spooner spoke highly of his mount. “Quirado is an eight-year-old, and he has only been jumping for a little over two years. I’m very excited about his future. He is very special and very careful. Standing a bit taller than eighteen hands, he has a wonderful mouth,” the veteran show jumper said. “I’ve tried to keep things simple with him in terms of my training regime. Now that I’ve gotten him to follow my hand I’ve been able to find a way around his size. I’m getting more and more confident with him. Speed was a difficulty in the beginning due to his size and youth, but over the last

few months it has come together. I had a plan to stick on the inside bend and have faith in him.” Looking into the future, Spooner wisely said, “I’m optimistic that Quirado will do the 1.50m classes next year. I have the same plan with my other horses. I’m hoping to move them up. With any new string of horses, you go through ups and downs, so I’m hoping for more ups than downs.” And he summed up his victory with a comment about the show and facility, where for many years, he has chosen to end his season. “The Las Vegas National is a great place to show, in that it’s designed with horses and horse sport in mind. For competition, it has to be the best indoor venue in the country.” ABOUT BLENHEIM EQUISPORTS Blenheim EquiSports, an equestrian event management company based in San Juan Capistrano, CA, produces events in three locations: San Juan Capistrano, Del Mar and Las Vegas, NV. The events include USEF “Premier” and “National” rated hunter-jumper shows featuring multiple grand prix events, a Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League event, USHJA International Hunter Derbies, Pony Finals, Medal Finals and more. Holiday havoc? Consider it handled The holiday season is full of magic and wonder - until your flight gets cancelled, your budget is blown and you fall ill at the worst possible time. Fortunately, staying merry despite common holiday conundrums is easier than you think with the right attitude and a few simple steps. Here are some of the most notorious holiday hurdles, with practical advice for overcoming them and enjoying the best of the season. Holiday hang-up: Blown budget The holidays can get expensive fast. Buying something for everyone on your list shouldn’t put you in debt. Instead, think outside the box. Solution: Organize a gift exchange where each person draws one name and buys one gift. Additionally, consider homemade gifts to cut costs, as well as experiences, like taking kids sledding or ice skating. Holiday hang-up: Sickness From holiday travelers being

confined in planes and trains to loved ones gathering under one room for festivities, it’s no surprise that germs are rampant during the holidays. Germs are not a gift anyone wants to receive and they can quickly strip a joyous occasion of all its fun. In fact, a recent survey by Robitussin found that 68 percent of people have been sick and miserable during holiday gatherings and 24 percent have had a holiday gathering ruined because a family member was sick. Solution: Tis the season of giving, but sharing your germs will get you on Santa’s naughty list. One sick person at Christmas dinner can turn into the whole family ringing in the New Year while sick in bed. If you feel ill, be prepared with a medicine like Robitussin Severe Multi-Symptom Cough Cold + Flu, which provides relief for your worst symptoms. If you’re still not feeling yourself when festivities are occurring, it’s best to stay home. Try putting on comfy pajamas and binge watching your favorite holiday movies while you rest up. Sure, it stinks to miss the fun, but in the long run you’re protecting others from getting sick and giving yourself the rest you need to get well again. Holiday hang-up: Kids get the

“gimmes” Commercialism runs high during the holiday season. Kids’ wish lists seem to grow with each passing day. You want them to focus on the “season of giving” and they want to focus on “the season of getting.” Solution: Show kids how good it feels to give back. There are many ways to help those in need, especially around the holidays. Try volunteering at a local nonprofit, donating gifts to a local shelter or assisting an elderly neighbor by shoveling their driveway. Be sure to encourage your kids to participate, too! Holiday hang-up: Travel problems Whether it’s a missed connection, delayed flight or the weather is too bad to drive, travel is difficult during the holiday season. Solution: If you’re stuck at home, make the best of it with a staycation. Sleep in, make yourself a big breakfast and do all the things you never get to do. Explore the fun that’s available in your hometown, whether that’s a trip to the museum or splurging on tickets to the local theater. Spontaneous adventures can be some of the most memorable! Holiday hang-up: You burned the food Did you mess up Grandma’s famous

apple pie? Do your gingerbread men look a little deranged? Are your kids concerned that Santa will refuse your holiday cookies? Kitchen fails happen to even the most skilled chefs. Solution: Always have a backup. An extra store-bought pie or cookies in the cupboard provide peace of mind. Plus, during the holiday crunch, avoid trying new recipes. Best to stick to tried-and-true for the best shot at success. Holiday hang-up: Unexpected party guests When your cousin RSVP’d for one but ended up bringing his new girlfriend, there’s no need to panic. Unexpected holiday guests can put you in a tailspin, but being flexible is all part of a memorable holiday adventure. Solution: Don’t stress! Now is a good time to remember the old saying, “the more the merrier!” Put out an extra table setting, grab that bottle of wine from the cupboard and slap a bow on the top for a quick gift. Savvy hosts and hostesses will plan ahead by keeping a few extra gifts on hand, so whether there’s an extra child looking for a present under the tree or an adult who needs a bit of holiday magic, you’re always set with the perfect present. - (BPT)

QUARTER PAGE COLOR This month I have terrific low prices on quarter page full color ad packages. Plus you can choose to either pre pay or pay as you go. But remember these rates apply only if you order this month. Smart business owners and marketing experts agree that the best advertising program is one which brings you clients and customers. Savvy business managers are wise to be concerned about high volume publications that don’t deliver a strong local audience that would generate immediate income for your business. Major daily newspapers like the Times and the Register reach nearly a million readers, but do you really need to pay their high prices to reach your customers in San Clemente, Talega, Dana Point? While some glossy monthly magazines are stylish, their costly rates may not be realistic compared to choosing a highly effective newspaper like these reasonably priced local newspapers which are received by your most likely preferred customers of high income homeowners. This advertising costs you far less money. These five local newspapers are attractive, effective and affordable. Let’s talk today!

HISTORIC LEGACY ESTATE

A European Count with a passion for architecture built this home originally. This Legacy Estate provides ambiance of an authentic Spanish Hacienda in the middle of the prestigious Los Ranchos Estates neighborhood of Coto De Caza. The property was later owned by a celebrity in the music business for sixteen years. It was a popular weekend destination for legendary musicians. Prominent local ranchers owned the property after that and did a major remodel of the home. Amenities include an outdoor Casita with fully equipped bar, a night lighted Tennis Court, Pool, Jacuzzi, a separate Guest Quarters and an Equestrian improvement with three stalls, turn-out area and Tack Rooms.
