Chocolate and cranberries - a holiday gift of taste! Black and White Holiday Bark with Cranberries Yield: 25 pieces Recipe from America’s Test Kitchen Holiday Cookies 2010 Special Issue Use good quality bittersweet and white chocolate in bar form. Chocolate chips contain less cocoa butter so that they can better hold their shape when baked in cookies, but this makes them harder to melt. Using bar chocolate will give you a much better texture in this bark. Scorched chocolate is a very sad thing, so keep a close eye on your chocolate as you melt it. You can also melt your chocolate in a double boiler instead of the microwave if you want. Ingredients 1 pound bittersweet chocolate, chopped, divided 1 cup Rice Krispies cereal 3/4 cup dried cranberries or dried cherries, chopped, divided 1 pound white chocolate, chopped Instructions Line an 8-inch square baking pan with aluminum foil, allowing at least a two-inch overhang on all

sides. Measure out and set aside 2 tablespoons of bittersweet chocolate for the topping. Microwave the remaining bittersweet chocolate in a bowl at 50% power for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides and stir. Continue to microwave the chocolate for 15 second intervals at 50% power, stirring between intervals, until just small lumps remain. Stir until smooth and pour into the prepared pan. Smooth the top and chill in the refrigerator until firm, about 30 minutes. Combine the Rice Krispies and 1/2 cup of dried cranberries and mix them together. Melt the white chocolate using the same method as the bittersweet chocolate, keeping in mind that white chocolate melts at a lower temperature than bittersweet chocolate. Gently fold the cereal mixture into the white chocolate until evenly incorporated. Spread over the bittersweet chocolate and smooth the top. Sprinkle with the remaining dried cranberries and return to the refrigerator to chill for another 30 minutes.

Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of bittersweet chocolate and pour into a small plastic bag. Cut a small hole in the corner and drizzle the chocolate over the bark. Allow the bark to warm up slightly, about 10 minutes, and pull it out of the pan using the aluminum

foil overhang and transfer to a cutting board. Carefully peel away the foil and cut bark into small squares with a sharp chef’s knife. The bark will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

CASA ROMANTICA PRESENTS D. YODER FAMILY SUNDAYS, FREE ADMISSION ON THE FIRST SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH IN 2017

Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, a nonprofit southern California cultural center, will begin offering D. Yoder Family Sundays in 2017. D. Yoder Family Sundays will enable free admission for all visitors to Casa Romantica between 10 am and 2 pm on the first Sunday of each month for activities and a noon-time program thematically based on Casa Romantica’s Casa Captivating programs for all ages. Visitors will also enjoy the beauty of Casa Romantica’s treasured ocean bluff home and gardens built by San Clemente’s founder, Ole Hanson. D. Yoder Family Sundays are made possible by the generosity of Ms. June Yoder, and will be established to honor the memory of David Yoder, the son of Paul and June Yoder. David passed away in 2011 at the age of 46, leaving his wife Karen and children Molly and Lucas. The June Yoder family contribution to Casa Romantica began at its inception. During the Capital Campaign in 2007. Ms. Yoder dedicated $25,000 to the Casa Romantica central courtyard garden, naming it the Paul A. Yoder Courtyard

in memory of her husband. Since then, Ms. June Yoder has continued her valued support to Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens in many ways, and has been integral to its growth. “Casa Romantica is a rich source of knowledge and community memories for San Clemente and south Orange County, said Casa Romantica Executive Director Berenika Schmitz. “Providing free access to this resource is a fulfillment of Casa Romantica’s mission to provide arts and culture for everyone, and we are thrilled that Ms. June Yoder, through her philanthropy, has made this a possibility.” The inaugural Sunday will be held on January 8th due to the New Year holiday. The opening celebration will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, live music, cake, and refreshments. D. Yoder Family Sundays will be held on the first Sunday of each month for the remainder of the year. A sampling of events includes an interactive music exhibit with several upright pianos, an ocean conservation lecture, plein air watercolor painting workshops, a historical trivia contest, live classical and contemporary music, dance performances, and docent-led tours

of the home and gardens. Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and is the historic home of the founder of the City of San

Clemente. Casa Romantica provides programs for all ages in arts, music, history, and horticulture and is a premier Southern California cultural center. www.casaromantica.org

Smart ways to create calm as you rush from holiday to holiday

Less than a month separates Halloween from Thanksgiving. And, this year, Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are all within a day of each other, and the two multi-day holidays both end on New Year’s Day. With end-of-year celebrations coming one after another, transitioning from holiday to holiday can ratchet up your stress level. If you really want to enjoy the holiday season to the fullest, it’s important to find ways to create calm in the chaos of party preparations, gift shopping, meal planning and other forms of busyness. Here are some tips to remain calm and in control as you move through the hectic pace of the holidays: Have a plan The holidays are busy and stressful enough without adding uncertainty and last-minute challenges into the mix. Plan ahead for holiday celebrations so that you know well in advance what you’ll need to make a memorable gathering. The further ahead you plan, the more time you’ll have for preparation, so go ahead and create your Thanksgiving menu while you’re sneaking treats from the kids’ Halloween stash. Start your Christmas shopping list at the same time. Establishing a budget can also Page 6

help ensure you stay calm during the holidays. Overspending is one of the most stress-causing experiences of the season. Planning how much you’ll spend for gifts, decorations and entertainment can help remove the stress of watching the bills pile up. Relieve stress with renting The amount of clutter you need in your home always seems to increase with the holidays - from Halloween costumes and decorations, to dishes and silverware for meals. Trying to gather everything in time can be stressful, and figuring out where to store it all after the holidays are over can be even more frustrating. Renting holiday-related items can be a hassle-free way to get what you need without the expense of buying, the logistical challenges of borrowing and the headache of storing stuff after the holidays. Local rental stores carry everything you need to move quickly and calmly from holiday to holiday. You can rent Halloween costumes; chafing dishes, silverware, dishes and linens for a big Thanksgiving meal; and decor for Christmas and New Year’s. You can find tables and chairs, lighting, centerpieces and even portable dance floors for New Year’s parties. Visit www.rentalHQ. com to find an American Rental Association member store in your

The San Clemente News

area, and remember to reserve items early as the holidays are a busy time for rental stores as well. Repurpose recipes Your guest list probably changes from celebration to celebration. The big Halloween party might include friends from the neighborhood or co-workers; Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are for spending time with family; and your annual New Year’s Eve party involves practically everyone you know. Trying to make different dishes and entirely unique menus for every one of those holiday celebrations could drive you crazy. Try repurposing recipes and reusing dishes that are easy to make, impressive to eat and work for you and your budget. For example, the punch you made for Halloween could also be great for New Year’s, especially with a grownup flare. The pumpkin cheesecake that was the perfect ending to your Thanksgiving menu can be just as delicious for New Year’s. Since each event will probably have a different guest list, it won’t look like you’re repeating yourself. Soothe your senses Gaudy store displays, flashing holiday lights, blaring TV and radio commercials - the sights and sounds of the season can sometimes get to be too much. Soothing your senses

can help create calm amid the chaos. While it may not be possible to completely unplug from the sensory overload the holidays can become, certain tactics can help relax you. Try using aromatherapy at home and even in the office to create a scented oasis of serenity. Scented candles, potpourri or room spray in popular holiday aromas like pine, cinnamon, peppermint and vanilla can subliminally create calm. Music is also one of the most enjoyable aspects of the holiday season. If you love holiday music, playing it in the background while you tackle chores like meal prep or gift wrapping can help relax you and put you in a festive mood. Or, if you’re feeling overloaded with holiday music, put on something else that you find soothing - classical music, jazz or hip hop. Whatever works for you is the right background music to help you enjoy the season! (BPT) -

As the saying goes, sharing is caring, and nothing spreads a little love like a potluck gathering among family and friends. Whether you’re celebrating the holidays or at a watch party for your favorite team, bring a simple make-and-take recipe for a tasty good time. Not only does a potluck menu take some pressure off the host, it gives each guest the chance to share beloved recipes and introduce new dishes featuring favorite ingredients. One sure bet for a crowd pleaser is the rich flavor of Musselman’s Apple Butter, a classic Pennsylvania Dutch spread made with apples and cinnamon that can add a special touch to your favorite sweet or savory recipes. Be sure your dish arrives looking as good as it tastes with these tips for smart food transport: Keep plastic wrap or foil from touching food on a serving platter by inserting toothpicks to create a tent. For hot dishes, such as these Sweet Bacon Smokies, prevent the condensation that accumulates in the lid from dripping on food by wrapping

CONSTRUCTION WORK BEGINS ON NORTH BEA CH San clemente SAND REPLENISHMENT PROJECT

The City of San Clemente will commence work on the North Beach San Clemente Sand Replenishment project on November 28, 2016. The project work will consist of unloading and spreading beach sand that will be obtained from the County’s Lower Santa Ana River Dredging Project. The City will bring 12,000 cubic yards of sand to North Beach over

the course of approximately two weeks. The sand will be pushed above the mean high tide line for the winter months. The project work hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and is expected to be completed in early December 2016. During the construction, the contractor will access the beach through the

Capistrano Shores Mobile Home Park near the train station in North Beach. The City of San Clemente has a Coastal Development Permit from the California Coastal Commission that allows the City to receive tested and approved sand during the project timeframe that will have minimal impact on biological resources.

City lifeguards have been monitoring and documenting existing wave and surf conditions for two months prior to the beach nourishment project, and will continue to do so for two months afterwards. Shea Theraputic Riding center BBQ Raises $1.3 Million Photos by: Pixel That! Guests of all ages gathered for an evening for the 38th annual BBQ and Family Faire at the J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center in San Juan Capistrano. This event must be one of the largest events I have ever attended - with over 1500 of the Center’s sponsors and friends present to support its mission; what a crowd! Their mission is to improve the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic horse-related programs. And that they do! It had all the fixin’s for a family-style BBQ with carnival games, a scrumptious BBQ, great hospitality and therapeutic riding demos and hundreds of unique auction items all set in a country family atmosphere, even the lemonade was perfect! Near the front gate, the Sponsor Saloon offered passed hors d’oeuvres and an array of beverages created by the Montage Laguna Beach staff. There were many small touches adding fun, such as a sleight-of-hand magician who entertained guests with “close up” magic. Country faire games of skill, led to prizes of stuffed animals, hats, and other souvenirs. One of this year’s most popular additions was the petting zoo, with its goats, donkeys, a zebu (a small cow), a miniature pig, an alpaca and bunnies. Shea Center Executive Director, Dana Butler-Moburg, welcomed the guests at the rail of the Klein Family Arena where the evening’s featured rider, Navy veteran Kevin Whitney, age 26, presented the colors. He then gave a riding demonstration to show his progress following a parachuting accident that left him with a spinal injury and paralyzed legs. Whitney returned later in the evening in the Samueli Arena to lead one of the evening’s most heartfelt moments, the “Parade of Stars.” This procession of 70 Shea Center clients, their families, and support volunteers moved through the dinner tables to a standing ovation. A stirring video was shown documenting Whitney’s success story that began in a wheelchair at The Shea Center front door and ended with him running and carrying his bride down the aisle at their wedding just eight months ago. Returning this year was popular emcee and auctioneer Shawn Parr, known as the ambassador of country music. Parr knew The Shea Center from his work in Los Angeles when he was the top-rated country music radio disc jockey. He served as the BBQ’s emcee and auctioneer, until moving to Nashville, where he now hosts a nationally syndicated radio show. This year he was able to return to serve up his usual high-energy style that keeps the evening lively and the bids coming. Food for the evening was prepared and served by volunteer members of the Montage Laguna Beach staff. Music through the evening and for dancing was provided by country band Swingshift. There were over 340 unique and fascinating items at the silent auction tables and eight live auction favorites. These included a packet of 4 VIP Jimmy Buffet tickets to one of the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre’s last ever concerts. Another bidder won tickets to “Oldchella,” officially known as “The Desert Trip” in Indio, CA. The festival featured Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Roger Waters, The Rolling Stones and The Who. Long-time Shea Center partners, Jenny and Bill Klein, issued a matching challenge grant for the first $150,000 raised in the Fosheim Rider Support Fund portion of the evening. Then, in a moment of exceptional generosity, Bill Klein jumped up and agreed to match the entire total amount raised for the Fosheim Fund. The Shea Center’s programs address 60 physical and cognitive disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delay, speech disabilities and Down syndrome. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3), the organization receives no federal, state or county funding. Rider fees contribute only 12% of The Shea Center budget. The rest is funded solely by grants, donations and fundraising events. The Center is ranked at the “Premier” level by PATH, Intl, the accreditation organization for equine assisted activities. The Shea Center is one of the top five among more than 840 therapeutic riding centers in North America. For more information, visit www.sheacenter.org. Page 12

F a l l I n L o v e w i t h T h e s e F a l l P l a y Id e a s Shorter days and crisp weather can only mean one thing: fall is in full swing. With pumpkin patches popping up and the smell of apple cider in the air, this season is full of celebrations for the whole family. But many of these activities aren’t the most physically active. It’s important for kids to participate in active play all year round; not only does it lead to healthier bodies, but it also helps kids develop healthy minds. According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, regular physical activity promotes psychological well-being and reduces feelings of depression and anxiety. As families are busy preparing for the holidays and getting the most out of the season, they can incorporate small changes to make sure their autumn fun encourages the whole family to get up and move. Here are a few ideas: Host a family cooking challenge. Whether you’re hosting a fall holiday meal or prepping a tailgate spread, parents spend a lot of time in the kitchen this season. Get the kids

involved and make a game out of meal prep. Create an ingredient scavenger hunt and challenge your sous chefs to find ingredients in the refrigerator and pantry within a time limit. You can even make a game out of cleaning up. Not only will this keep kids moving and engaged, but it could also inspire healthier eating habits and an interest in cooking. Play ball. Get into the spirit of the season and host your own football tournament. Whether it’s just for an afternoon or lasts throughout the fall, create a family football league in your backyard or at a local park. You can modify rules so they are appropriate to the players’ ages and skill levels to ensure that everyone gets an opportunity to participate. Face off against families in your neighborhood and treat the group to a tailgate celebration after the big game. Explore the outdoors. No matter where you live, fall brings about beautiful weather that begs you to get outdoors. Plan a nature hike for your kids around the neighborhood or at a national or state park. Play nature games during the walk to keep them

engaged, like creating “leaf angels” in piles of leaves. The whole family will get a chance to be active while also enjoying the great outdoors. Give back. The fall is a great time to teach kids about giving back to those in need and being grateful for what they have. Sign the whole family up for a local charity run or walk and talk to your kids about the cause and why it’s important to help out. Nothing’s better than a little sweat for a good

cause! For more information about ways to keep kids active and playing this fall, check out Let’s Play, at LetsPlay.com. Let’s Play is a Dr Pepper Snapple initiative to get kids and families active nationwide. The website has hundreds of play ideas that are searchable by season, age range and group size. H a n dm a d e f o r t h e H o l i d a y s A holiday-ready home is filled with small touches that celebrate the season. Welcome guests with these easy DIY projects that lend an extra special feel to your home. Extend a warm greeting with a faux fur wreath that dresses up the front door, such as this design from the crafting experts at Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. Then, put some empty Mason jars to use with a display perfect for an entryway table or ledge. Make it even prettier by nestling the jars among some evergreen branches and finish them off with a pretty bow or twine. Find more ideas for DIY projects to spruce up your home this holiday season at joann.com.

If the inside of the jar was spray painted, trace the shape on the glass with a Sharpie. 3. Fill in each design using a detail brush and white enamel paint. Apply additional coats as necessary. 4. Paint jar rims gold. 5. Apply a thin layer or dry brush gold acrylic paint on jelly jars for added texture and dimension. 6. Brownie Cake Cones

C

FAMILY FEATURES

reating one-of-a-kind desserts doesn’t have to take hours in the kitchen or even exceptional baking skills. With a little imagination and the right tools, you can whip up surprisingly delicious sweets that will surprise and delight your friends and family. Focus on flavor If your baking repertoire typically consists of white cake and chocolate frosting, spice things up a bit by experimenting with new fillings and flavor combinations. Opt for complementary or contrasting tastes for a truly delectable dessert. For example, pair fudgy chocolate cake with tangy berries, or see how a bold flavor like lemon adds a new dimension to a mild vanilla. Add a special touch Infusing new flavors into your favorite cake or brownie recipe is surprisingly easy when you use bakeware made for the purpose. Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware helps home bakers easily create “treat-filled” desserts. Each bakeware set comes with two pans: One pan creates the bottom half of the cake and forms indentations in the cake you can fill with fruit, puddings, candy and more, while the second pan creates the top half of the cake, which hides the surprise fillings. Shape it up Artfully applied frosting and other decorations can instantly dress up a basic cake, but another option is upgrading the shape of the cake itself. In addition to traditional square, round and sheet cake pans, the Baker’s Advantage Fillables Bakeware collection includes mini heart cakes, fluted cakes, mini loaf cakes and a cake cones pan. These special shapes make it easy to create enviable desserts out of classic recipes. Find more surprisingly easy dessert ideas at FillablesbyBakersAdvantage.com.

Judging from the number of decorating crews working in the local area neighborhoods, it appears that the holiday season is fast coming upon us. In times past, many homeowners would bring out their own ladders , go to the store and purchase their own lighting to hang on their homes. However, in recent times, many homeowners opt to hire a crew of professionals who are well-equipped to race up and down scaffolding and ladders to hang the decorating lights, arrange the electronics and timers to make the holidays much happier. these professionals make this task much simpler and exceptionally quicker. A two-story house shown in the photo above, was recently decorated with a complete array of lighting and installation and under one hour.another great selling point

from the decorating crews is that they come back after the holidays, pack the whole thing up and put it in the garage for you or take it away whichever is your pleasure. Nearly all of the local communities hold decorating contests and competitions to determine the best decorated homes in the area. Judging usually takes place between Thanksgiving and December 10 so if you are contemplating joining any of these contests, now would be the time to commence the decorating job at your house. This cheerful band is from the crew of holiday lighting including the Scotty Martin, Alex Bale, Connor Ziencing,Dave Collins, Mike Collins, Anthony Cann,Joshua Fawcett, and Donovan Decair
