My husband and I had the most wonderful experience working with Amy. In the past 2 years we have worked with three realtors, none of which were as professional or insightful as Amy. She clearly understood our housing market and understood how to price our home so that not only would we make money, but it would sell quickly as we were in escrow on another home prior to listing our home. Within two days of listing our home- we had a full price offer. We have met and worked with several realtors and have often felt like one of many- we are not provided updates, status, ect. and it is darn near impossible to reach them. Amy never once made us feel like a number, but we always felt like her priority. We never once had to follow up with her to find out how a showing went, status on escrow, ect. she kept us informed every step of the way which was greatly appreciated and credits her professionalism. Amy is also without a doubt one of the warmest individuals we have ever had the privilege of working with. I will refer her to all our friends and family and I can confidently say we will never work with another realtor. Thank you, Amy!!

Tips for healthier air travel Ask people who fly frequently, and they will tell you that it takes a mental and physical toll on them. Psychologically, air travel can make you feel like a nameless face in a herd of sameness. The combination of spending hours in airport lines, dragging around luggage to avoid bag fees and being wedged into tiny seats drive people to near madness. The confluence of monotony and feeling unappreciated has made air travel a lethargic chore instead of, at the very least, a necessary means to an end. The possible physical effects of air travel are even more troubling. Dry cabin air and altitude changes can compromise a passenger’s immune system. Long stretches of inactivity can also contribute to circulatory conditions such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), which some have contentiously called Economy Class Syndrome. The good news is that there are common sense ways to keep your mind and body healthy while traveling. * Hydrate to energize - Dehydration can lower energy, and also affect your mood and the ability to think clearly, according to a study conducted at the University of Connecticut. Pack a refillable bottle in your carry-on and be sure to fill it once through security. When in the air, ask for water or juice instead of soda or alcohol, which can increase dehydration. Hydration can boost energy levels once you arrive at your destination. * Assert your personality - Find a way to bring along something that reminds you of home. This keeps you grounded and can spark conversations that make air travel more enjoyable. A new and unique way to do this is with a MyFlyBag. This personalized luggage features a photo or image of your choice - your family, a pet, a favorite vacation spot

- turning an otherwise boring piece of luggage into a personal billboard. * Limit stress - Stress is the body’s enemy. Mitigate it by arriving at the airport early, so you can navigate the ticketing and security lines without having to constantly look at your watch. Arriving at the gate early also gives you a chance to meet new people. * Stimulate the mind - At the airport, pick up a book of crossword puzzles,

math games or even a newspaper from a foreign country printed in English to stretch the brain in new directions. A little planning and a positive outlook can change the entire air travel experience for the better. You will stand out, be energized and will be ready to make the most of your business trip or personal vacation.

Before borrowing money from a friend, decide which you need more. ~Donald Trump The San Clemente News

Dana Point celebrates the annual Gray Whale migration with a two-weekend whale festival And a Parade The Dana Point Festival of Whales began over 40 years ago as an annual community event in the coastal town of Dana Point, located in picturesque Orange County, California. Residents and visitors celebrate the migration of Gray Whales and other marine wildlife with ocean-themed activities and presentations emphasizing education and environmental responsibility. A variety of events are scheduled for in and around the Dana Point Harbor area and the premiere event is, of course, whale watching. Gray whales can be seen off Dana Point from December through May. The whales are often are seen within just a mile or two of the shoreline, where they are believed to use Dana Point’s headlands as a landmark on their journey. Gray whales make one of the longest migrations of any mammal. The whales travel 10,000 to 12,000 miles from the cold waters of the Chukchi and Bering Seas to the warm lagoons of Baja, California. There the gray whales mate and have their calves.

Festival of Whales Parade March 7 This event is weather permitting The Festival of Whales Parade begins promptly at 10 AM with a route along Pacific Coast Highway beginning at Selva Road and ending at Golden Lantern in Dana Point. We are pleased to announce our Grand Marshal Wyland and Community Grand Marshal Jay “Sparky” Longley. FREE shuttle service to and from Harbor parking lots will be available beginning one hour (9 AM) from the parade start time. Arrive early, enjoy breakfast harbor side, board the free shuttle and then spend the day visiting all the great events located throughout the Harbor. Parade entrants are encouraged to embrace the Festival’s theme of Magical Migration when designing parade floats and costumes. For inquiries about giant balloon sponsorships and other parade questions, please contact Sherry Murphy, Recreation Manager at the City of Dana Point (949) 248-3533 or smurphy@ danapoint.org.

Forget Fad Diets and Focus on Health If you recently committed to managing your weight or dieting, it may be time to change your approach. For long-term results, ditch fad dieting and adopt a balanced approach to eating with a focus on healthy foods. Being healthy isn’t just about fitting into skinny jeans. According to a recent national survey, there are many reasons why women consider dieting: 68 percent want to improve their health, 51 percent want to look their best, and 39 percent want to have more energy. With these goals in mind, it may not come as a surprise that survey participants reported being on an average of nine diets in their lifetimes. In fact, 76 percent of American women who have dieted admit to having tried a fad diet. However, nearly two out of three women believe fad diets are difficult to maintain. What’s more, these diets may even be unhealthy, according to the Weight-control Information Network (WIN). Some fad diets fail to provide your body with the nutrients your body needs. In addition, sustained rapid weight loss can increase your risk of gallbladder problems, and heart problems can result from consuming too few calories for too long. To maintain a healthy weight and healthier lifestyle, the experts at WIN suggest focusing on establishing these healthy habits: Page 6

* Choose healthy foods, with a diet rich in fruits and veggies. * Manage calorie intake and portion size. Keep on track by using a smaller plate, paying close attention to nutrition labels and weighing portions on a scale. * Make exercise part of your daily life. Even activities such as gardening or taking the stairs can make a difference.

Managing your metabolism - how your body uses calories - is another key to healthy eating. Eating foods that deliver plenty of protein and fiber are all keys to maximizing your metabolism. When it comes to healthy food, look for wholesome, nutritious options, even when you snack. “We believe when it comes to healthy eating, the secret is, there

is no secret,” said Mangala D’Sa, Senior Director of Marketing for Post Foods. “A fad-free diet, complete with wholesome, nutritious foods is key to healthy eating.” A balanced approach to eating, coupled with a few lifestyle changes, are all the tools you need to succeed on your weight control quest. During the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented Academy Awards (commonly referred to as Oscars) in 24 categories. The ceremony, televised in the United States by ABC, was produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan and directed by Hamish Hamilton. Actor Neil Patrick Harris hosted the ceremony for the first time. In related events, the Academy held its 6th Annual Governors Awards ceremony at the Grand Ballroom of the Hollywood and Highland Center on November 8, 2014. On February 7, 2015, in a ceremony at The Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, the Academy Awards for Technical Achievement were presented by hosts Margot Robbie and Miles Teller. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Grand Budapest Hotel won the most awards, tieing with four each. Birdman ‘s awards included the Best Director, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for Alejandro González Iñárritu, while The Grand Budapest Hotel ‘s awards included Best Original Score for Alexandre Desplat. Whiplash, the only other film to win multiple awards, won three including the Best Supporting Actor for J. K. Simmons. Other winners included The Theory of Everything, Still Alice, Boyhood, The Imitation Game, Big Hero 6, Ida, Citizenfour, Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1, The Phone Call, Feast, Selma, American Sniper, and Interstellar. The telecast garnered Page 8

nearly 36.6 million viewers in the United States, making it the least watched Oscar ceremony since the 80th Academy Awards in 2008 and a third-lowest watched in Oscar broadcast history The nominees for the 87th Academy Awards were announced on January 15, 2015, at 5:38 a.m. PST (13:38 UTC), at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California, by Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy, directors J. The winners were announced during the awards ceremony on February 22, 2014. All of the films competing for Best Picture received at least one award in another category, making it the first time this has occurred since the Academy expanded the category to more than five nominees in 2009. Alejandro González Iñárritu became the second consecutive Mexican winner for Best Director, with the statue having been awarded the previous year to Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity. Alejanndro was the most awarded individual of the ceremony, winning all of his three nominations. Emmanuel Lubezki became the consecutive recipient of Best Cinematography award after winning for Birdman as he also won for Gravity last year, and second Mexican winner of ceremony. Ida became the first Oscar winner for Poland in Best Foreign Language Film category, with an overall ten nominations since 1963. It became the first time in Oscar history that the films receiving the same number of nominations were also tied with earning the same number of wins.

A literal “who’s who” in the music industry, past Bash artists who have been on the stage have been Melissa Manchester, Dave Koz, Mindy Abair, Brian Culbertson, Peter White, Brenda Russell, Patti Austin, Bob James, and so many others. For this private event, VIP’s were privy to tasting the fine creations from those restaurants who have graciously donate their food as sponsors of the event for 2015: The Vintage Steak House they served up a delicious pork tenderloin in a Madera wine sauce paired with a roasted shallot wild rice; The Ranch Sports Grill served up three different amazing sliders, each with lettuce, tomato and dressing. Folks were able to choose from a regular beef patty, BBQ Chicken and a Veggie burger and all came with a potato or green salad. Word has it that for the VIP’s at the Bash, they will be adding a seafood – crab and shrimp slider to the menu. Delizie’s Restaurant gave out servings of a very yummy Three Cheese Baked Rigatoni along with sausage, peppers and onions, while Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen served up some tasty Bayou Pasta and mini Muffalletta Sliders for guests to enjoy. Attendees were able to taste wines from Robert Oatley, the Chardonnay and Cabernet as well as Giessen Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris along with Chakras Malbec, Foppiano Estate Russian River Pinot Noir and Beach House Chardonnay. It’s a Grind Coffee provided folks with coffee for the evening as well. KSBR Major Supporters Brian During the evening, Vincent Ingala gave guests a real treat playing Vincent Ingala and Jean Thompson standards, his original music as well as a few songs he sang from the 60’s - what an incredible talent he is! Ingala released his first CD, North End Soul when he was just 17 years old but his musical journey had started with a drum set and guitar at the age of four. He joined the school band in fifth grade and switched to sax and took off from there. His second CD, Can’t Stop Now drew raves when released in 2012 and produced 5 smash singles. Headline gigs at the Newport Beach Jazz Festival, Catalina Island Jazz Trax Festival, Seabreeze Jazz Fest and several Dave Koz Cruises are just a few of the items that now fill up his resume. Now a full-time Southern California resident, he has been handpicked to host the Sunday Brunch at the Dave Koz Lounge in the new Spaghettini Restaurant in Beverly Hills. Spotted at the event were international recording artist Tony Guerrero who doubles as the Music Director for the KSBR Birthday Bash; the legendary Max Bennett of Peggy Lee/Ella Fitzgerald/Frank Sinatra/Joni Mitchell fame and City of Mission Viejo official Dave Leckness. KSBR is a community service of Saddleback College. Sponsorship are still available for this year’s KSBR Birthday Bash. Is it better to look good or feel good? Both, when you’re pondering pedicures Whether you’re getting ready for a romantic evening out, or looking ahead to when sandal days are back again, treating your feet to a pedicure can help you look and feel your best as long as you keep foot health front of mind. It’s important to ensure your pedicure is done properly, whether you’re doing it yourself at home or enjoying a professional treatment in a nail salon or spa. The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) offers some pedicure pointers to help you love how your feet look and feel: * Start with a good soak in warm water for at least five minutes. This will help soften calluses and prep feet for removing dry, rough skin. To exfoliate, use a pumice stone or foot file. Never use a foot razor to remove dead skin, and ban your pedicurist from using one on you. It’s too easy for a quick slip-up that could cause permanent damage or lead to serious infection. * Shave your legs a day or two before your professional pedicure, but not the day of. Shaving can cause

minor abrasions and fissures in the skin, allowing bacteria to enter while your feet soak or the nail technician handles your feet. A little bit of stubble won’t bother her at all. * When doing a home pedicure, use toenail clippers with a straight edge and cut nails straight across. Avoid other cutting tools, such as manicure scissors, as they can increase the risk of ingrown nails. For salon pedicures, bring your own tools; shared tools can spread bacteria if they haven’t been properly cleaned. Use an emery board to smooth and round nail edges. * Never permit a nail technician to cut or trim cuticles, which protect nail beds from bacteria. Instead, use a rubber cuticle pusher or liquid remover to gently push back cuticles just a little bit. Use a wooden or rubber manicure stick - never metal or anything sharp - to clean beneath nails. * Remove polish after it’s been on for a while. Keeping nails polished for extended periods may promote fungal growth. Leave toe nails polish-free for

a few days between pedicures. * Post pedicure, don’t walk around in flimsy flip-flops, especially the ones salons sometimes give customers before they leave. They don’t provide adequate protection or support for your feet. * Look for foot-friendly products that have earned the APMA’s Seal of Acceptance or Approval. Podiatrists

have evaluated these products and found them to be beneficial to foot health. Finally, never put up with foot pain. Discomfort and pain that lasts longer than several days could be a sign of a more serious problem or infection. Seek treatment from a podiatrist - the foot and ankle expert.

Fresh for the season: Top budget-friendly wardrobe trends

As the weather outside evolves to a fresh season, wardrobes are evolving too. Whether you’re shopping with your kids or you want a few new pieces for you and your spouse, incorporating some of the season’s top trends into your look is an easy way to stay stylish. The good news: this season is full of trends that are not only comfortable, but affordable too. Here are six trends for this season that will keep you looking great without breaking the bank: Innovative fabrics Being fashionable doesn’t mean

being uncomfortable. That’s where modern innovative fabrics take center stage. Many designers are now using fabrics that breath, stretch or wick perspiration. For example, dENiZEN from the Levi’s brand jeans, feature essential stretch, a denim that has a four-way stretch of up to 40 percent. These trendy jeans not only flatter in all the right places, they offer all-day comfort for any type of adventure. Colorful hats Beanies, fedoras, baseball caps, oh my! When it comes to fashion meeting function, there’s no better option than a great hat. Having a few in your collection means you can mix and match depending on your mood. Remember, accessories can be a good way to experiment with color, so a hat in rusty orange or vibrant teal might be the perfect way to integrate unique hues into your wardrobe. Classic patterns Checkers, houndstooth and pinstripes are classic patterns that never go out of style. Plaid is also -on-trend this season, popping up on runways around the world. Luckily, these patterns are available relatively cheap at many stores. Alternatively, hit vintage boutiques for affordable options that feature patterns that stand the test of time.

Slimming features From tanks that tuck and jeans that smooth, designs that slim are hot. Pants are a great way to incorporate this trend into your look. The innovative slimming features of dENiZEN from the Levi’s brand jeans create a fashion-forward look that complements any body shape. Available exclusively at Target, get a few in some of the season’s most popular styles, like the Essential Stretch Modern Skinny and Essential Stretch Modern Boot-cut. Lovely layers Layering is a fashionable way to stay warm when temperatures dip. Stay on trend by mixing textures and prints for a one-of-a-kind look. The trick to layering is to start with light fabrics and then build thickness with each layer. For example, start with a cotton tank or T-shirt, layer with a light cardigan or sweater, and finish with a thicker jean jacket or military-style blazer. Chunky knits From oversized sweaters to wool scarves, chunky knits are perfect to snuggle into on cool days. Cableknit sweaters are a great example, providing a preppy yet comfy look for both men and women. Keep in mind jewel tones are some of the hottest

colors; select a chunky knit in emerald green, royal purple or ruby red and you’ll have a ravishing, versatile addition to your wardrobe. These affordable trends will have you looking great no matter which way your personal style leans. From modern fabrics to classic patterns, your wardrobe will stand out this seasons and beyond.

Investing Our Hearts in Champagne

HAPPY GRAPES

By David White “Here you have this wonderful, miraculous thing, with hundreds of thousands of little tiny bubbles that are defeating gravity and exploding in this gentle fragrant foam on the lip of the glass. There is something beautiful in a kind of giddy way about just the sight of Champagne.” It was slightly surprising to hear wine importer Terry Theise make this statement. Since the dawn of global wine consumption, large producers like Moet & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot have dominated the Champagne market. These companies purchase their grapes from thousands of growers across the region to deliver a consistent product each year and spend millions trying to convince us that their wines are best enjoyed when celebrating. Theise has spent the past 20 years

urging Americans to ignore these companies and instead drink “farmer fizz,” or Champagne produced by the farmers who grow the grapes. And he’s worked harder than anyone to dispel the notion that Champagne should only be consumed on New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, and other special occasions. But Theise recognizes that Champagne carries an emotional charge. There is, to put it simply, something special about Champagne. As Theise writes in his most recent catalog, “we invest our hearts in it.” Theise and I connected because I wanted to find out why he started importing Champagne. Theise first brought in wines from the region in 1997. He was already a well known importer of serious wines from Germany and Austria, countries that were and still are curiosities for most Americans. Convincing consumers to drink grower Champagne must have seemed like yet another Sisyphean effort. After all, while the region and its wines were always associated with prestige and luxury, only serious wine enthusiasts knew that top Champagne was on par with the finest wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. For good reason, everyday Americans poo-pooed Champagne. The good stuff was too expensive and rarely seemed worth it. The imitation

Champagne served at weddings think Cook’s and cheap Prosecco was, well, gross. Theise’s professional history with Champagne dates back to the early days of his relationship with Odessa Piper, the well-known restaurateur and chef. When they began dating, Piper lived in Wisconsin and Theise was settled in Washington, D.C. “As happens in long-distance relationships,” he explained, “you have a lot of misery and heartbreak when you’re apart. But when you come together, it’s a big celebration. So we quickly ran through all the grower Champagnes that were available in the U.S. market and I found myself thinking. Is this really all? There have to be more good growers than this.’” So Theise planned a trip to Champagne with Piper, armed with advice from other serious wine geeks. “This was all personal,” he continued. “All I wanted to do was to buy some Champagne to ship back to myself so I’d have stuff in the cellar to open up with Odessa. So we visited a number of producers. And I came away with my mind expanded I had not realized the profound degree to which Champagne was a wine of terroir, just like every other wine of Northern Europe.” By the conclusion of his trip, Theise decided to add Champagne to his

import portfolio. And slowly but surely, he found an audience for his new offerings. Consumers appreciated the fact that these wines had personality and couldn’t be found at the local corner store. Sommeliers appreciated the opportunity to advocate for Champagne at the dinner table. Sales for Theise really began to take off in 2003 and the growth has been impressive. While growers accounted for just 0.62 percent of America’s Champagne market in 1997, they now account for about 5 percent of it. That percentage continues to rise. And overall shipments of Champagne to the United States have been climbing steadily since 2009. Theise doesn’t like the fact that large Champagne producers have relegated their wines to “beverages of ceremony,” but only because their marketing “presumes that ceremonies are few and far between.” As he explained, “there are weekly, if not daily ceremonies.” Champagne warrants such romanticism, especially from Theise. Shortly after that first trip to Champagne, Theise and Piper tied the knot. David White is the founder and editor of Terroirist.com, which was named “Best Overall Wine Blog” at the 2013 Wine Blog Awards. His columns are housed at Grape Collective.

Choosing a Dog to Match Your Personality So, You’re Going to Get a Dog. That’s Wonderful and I Urge You to Consider Rescuing One from Your Local SPCA or Another Shelter L. V. Paganini So, you’re going to get a dog. That’s wonderful and I urge you to consider rescuing one from your local SPCA or another shelter. They normally have a large selection of dogs and some of them are puppies. I got my German Shepherd mix, Morgan, from my local animal shelter and have never regretted it. It’s time to decide how to select Page 16

your dog. It’s a good idea to match your dog to your personality - the things you enjoy doing and your lifestyle. If you’re a jock you’ll want an active dog. But if your idea, of exercise is kicking back on the couch with a good read, you’ll prefer a dog that doesn’t require a lot of exercise. Consider your lifestyle - if you work until late into the evening it will be difficult to exercise and play with your dog. Is there a neighbor who would spend some time with your pet during the day while you’re gone? (My exneighbors had three kids who loved to play with Morgan even when I was around. I’m sure Morgan is very sorry we moved.) Are you out of town a lot? If so, you’ll need to think about who will care for your pet while you’re gone. You want to find a pup that complements your personality and your lifestyle. Here are some characteristics of some the various breeds of dogs. Intelligent dogs • Australian Sheepdog • Belgian Sheepdog • German Shepherd • Keeshond • Poodle Dogs that don’t require much exercise • Brussels Griffon

very general rule of thumb. Morgan is a German shepherd/Burmese Mountain Dog and is very, very friendly. Consider try going to a dog show, a pet shop and a couple of trips to the local animal shelters. And, talk to friends who have dogs. If this sounds too much work, reconsider why you want a dog. They are a lot of work, albeit very rewarding work. If you take good care of your dog, he/she will be a wonderful companion. But, you must realize there will be chores to do, exercising and playing with your dog and the expense of feeding and caring for your pet.
