All-American Boys Chorus Presents Free Concert for Veterans & Active Military

The internationally acclaimed ALL-AMERICAN BOYS CHORUS, under the direction of Wesley Martin, will present a “Concert for Veterans” on March 27 at 6:30 pm at the San Clemente Community Center, 100 Calle Seville, San Clemente. Tickets for U.S.A. Armed Forces Veterans and active military personnel are free; other adults are $10; and children under 12 are $5. Tickets may be acquired online at www.taabc.org or by calling (714) 708-1670. Tickets will also be available at the door. The performance is part of a series of concerts presented by the AllAmerican Boys Chorus throughout Orange County to salute and honor veterans and to raise funds for veterans organizations. All proceeds from the concert on March 27 will benefit the South Coast Marine Corps League. AABC Artistic Director Wesley Martin states that “the centerpiece of the program is a patriotic tribute by the 40-voice ensemble featuring a medley of the five U.S.A. Armed Forces songs, God Bless the U.S.A., America the Beautiful, and the Marches of John Philip Sousa.” He adds that the choristers, ages 10

to 15, “will also present audience favorites—from the California sounds of the Beach Boys to Broadway selections from The Lion King and West Side Story to pop standards of the 70’s and 80’s including songs from the Jackson 5, the Mamas and the Papas and Chicago.” He goes on to say that “we’ll also include swinging songs from the Big Band era, as well as great jazz standards from the pens of Duke Ellington and Jimmy McHugh.” AABC Executive Director, Anthony Manrique, states, “Concerts for Veterans is a community outreach project of The All-American Boys. We’re proud to be collaborating with each city, which is donating the use of the concert venue. Our wonderful veterans will be entertained and honored. AABC choristers will have the honor of performing for, and will get to meet, great Americans who have given and sacrificed much on behalf of freedom.” The All-American Boys Chorus, a non-profit organization based in Costa Mesa, provides a worldacclaimed music and performing arts curriculum that educates, motivates and builds character in boys through

unparalleled opportunities for performance, leadership, travel and community service. The Chorus has performed for more than 65,000 school children through its music outreach education programs. To date, the AABC has released five albums and has performed to standing ovations in concerts worldwide. In August 2013 the Chorus toured for 22 days in New Zealand and Australia, giving workshops and master classes in six schools and presenting seven public concerts, including a joint concert with the Southern Gospel Choir in Tasmania. This summer the choristers will travel to western Canada on a 24-day

concert tour. AABC choristers have sung before some of the nation’s most prestigious audiences—from U.S. presidents to well-known celebrities, including Josh Groban, Tony Bennett, Paul Anka, Melissa Manchester, Mary Hart, Bob Hope and Victor Borge. There are also artistic collaborations with the Disney Company, Pacific Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Additionally, the AABC has provided its members with a taste of stardom earning them television credits for nationwide commercials for Mazda, Toshiba, KFC and Pacific Life. Gleaming with glamour and virtuosity, Sarah Chang, one of the world’s foremost violinists, returns to Pacific Symphony to perform Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, which takes full advantage of the violin’s expressive range, from the rippling high chords to the growling alto notes. With an international career that spans more than two decades, Chang, the “thrill seeker” who made Mendelssohn “sizzle” (Orange County Register) when she opened the Symphony’s 2011-12 season enthralls once again—this time alongside guest conductor Tito Muñoz. Opening the concert and having its West Coast premiere is a sensuous work by Adam Schoenberg, “Finding Rothko” (2006). Inspired by four bold paintings by American Abstract Impressionist painter Mark Rothko, the work is a musical depiction of the emotions Schoenberg felt embodied in each of thepaintings.Embrace art, music and mastery at “Sarah Chang Plays Sibelius” Thursday through Saturday, April 10-12, at 8 p.m., in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Tickets are $25-$99. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. “The Sibelius concerto is one of my favorite violin concertos, and I say this as a violinistmyself,” says Maestro Muñoz. “I also have known of Sarah Chang since I started learning music,so it will be a thrill to work with her for the first time in these concerts.” The Symphony opens the evening

with a work by Schoenberg, whose music has an ability to create “mystery and sensuality” (The New York Times), and has been called “open, boldand optimistic” (Atlanta JournalConstitution). The four movements, based on Rothko’s paintings, are played without interruption, flowing from the sunny heights of “Orange” and “Yellow” to the deep and mysterious tones of “Red” and “Wine.” The night swings into a close with the cheerful rhythms of Symphony No. 8, abundant in the folk music of composer Dvořák’snative Bohemia. Full of energy, the symphony toys with woodwinds in the opening, reflects on the joys and sorrows of country life in the second movemennt, transitions to a lusciously scored waltz in the third and uses a trumpet fanfare in the finale. “I think that Dvořák may actually have had a very indirect influence on Adam’s work,” says Muñoz. “Since her debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of 8, Chang has performed with some of the most esteemed orchestras, conductors

and accompanists worldwide. Her most recent recording for EMI Classics—her 20th for the label— featured the Brahms and Bruch violin concertos with Kurt Masur and the Dresdner Philharmonie, and received excellent critical and popular acclaim. In 2006, Chang was honored as one of 20 top women in Newsweek magazine’s “Women and Leadership, 20 Powerful Women Take Charge” issue. In 2008, she washonored as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. In 2012, she received the Harvard University Leadership Award and in 2005, Yale University dedicated a chair in SpragueHall in her name. In 2011, she was named an official artistic ambassador by the United States Embassy, and hhas since traveled the world to connect audiences through what she says is the “one and only universal language”— music.“Chang is a complete package as a player—technically assured, colorfully expansive, subtly probing, boldly commanding.” — Grand Rapids Press

Creating a pollinator-friendly habitat in your backyard Pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, bats and beetles play an important role in producing healthy plants and food for people and wildlife. Without pollinators feeding on nectar and moving pollen from one flower to the next, most plants would not produce fruit or seeds. You can attract pollinators to your lawn and garden by following these

steps to create a pollinator-friendly backyard habitat. * Grow a diverse assortment of trees, shrubs and flowers. Place water sources throughout your lawn and garden to draw a variety of pollinators to your yard, while providing them with food and sheltered nesting areas. * Add color to your backyard. Each

pollinator is drawn to specific plants based on its size, shape, color and scent. Bees are attracted to yellow and blue flowers, as well as fruit and nut trees with strong fragrances. Hummingbirds prefer large red or orange tubular flowers with no odor. * Select flowering plants that bloom at different times to provide nectar sources throughout the growing

season. Place plants in clumps to supply large areas of color and coverage that attracts pollinators. * Choose plants native to your area to encourage healthy pollination activity. In the South, flowers from mint, oregano, lavender and other herbs attract bees, while pink azaleas and coral honeysuckle vines entice hummingbirds into your yard. In the Northwest, birds are drawn to flowering grape holly shrub and blue columbine flowers will draw butterflies into your outdoor space. Pay attention to how you apply lawn and garden products. “When using insecticides, carefully read and follow label directions to protect pollinators,” says Aaron Hobbs, president of RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment) a national organization representing the manufacturers, formulators and distributors of pesticide and fertilizer products. Pollinators are as essential as sunlight and water in the production of flowering plants, many of which are important food sources. Support your backyard ecosystem while attracting pollinator populations and surrounding your home with colorful arrays of native plants.

Get a jumpstart on digital spring cleaning by tackling an overloaded inbox If you spring clean your home every year, you might want to consider an often forgotten and usually cluttered space - your email. Your digital world can get just as messy as any other area of the home with all the photos, emails and documents you’re creating and storing. Your inbox is a great place to tackle first considering the average person will receive more than 10,000 emails this year, according to The Radicati Group, Inc. According to Outlook.com, 80 percent of the average inbox is commercial mail, such as newsletter and daily deals. All those emails could take hours to sort; however, with a few email tools, you can easily, and quickly, unclutter and organize your inbox. Try the following tools to make your email spring cleaning easier: * Mass delete unwanted emails. The first step most users take when cleaning their Inbox is to get rid of emails that they don’t want. For these emails, features like Sweep in Outlook.com allow users to easily delete (and, if you want, block) emails in bulk by deleting a large number of emails from certain senders, keeping only the latest and most relevant messages. You can even schedule a Page 6

cleanup, saving you time in the future. This comes in handy when you want to clean up all of those newsletters or daily deals. In fact, the sweep feature helps Outlook.com users move or delete 7.5 million emails every week. * Categorize emails, making it easier to access when needed. By creating categories based on topics that commonly appear in your inbox such as coupons, calendar related activities or personal conversations, you can then archive email to keep yourself organized and find emails quickly. * Create folders so you can automatically file away emails and easily find in the future. You can take this a step further and let your email service do the work for you by creating rules that move email to folders as soon as they hit your inbox. * Set up actions to help you review all your emails quickly. Once you’ve uncluttered your inbox, tools like Outlook.com’s Instant Actions allow users to focus on important emails by quickly accomplishing the most common inbox tasks such as delete, flag and mark emails as unread without having to actually open an email and read it. * Leverage your email to stay

The San Clemente News

connected in other ways. Connect your email to Skype, Facebook, Twitter and other social chat tools. In addition, when you connect other services, some email services automatically update contact information for your

people so they’re always up-to-date. Once you have your inbox spring cleaning accomplished you can get back to using email as a personal and productive tool rather than viewing it as a chore.

Money-Saving Tips for Seniors By Jason Alderman We all love a good bargain, no matter what our age. But if you’re a senior citizen on a fixed income, finding discounted goods and services can mean the difference between making ends meet and going without. The good news is that tons of senior discounts are available – often for people as young as 50. One caveat right up front: Although many senior discounts are substantial, you sometimes can find better bargains – especially on travel-related expenses like airfare, hotels and rental cars. So always do your research first before requesting the senior rate. Here’s a roundup of some of the best senior discounts I’ve found: An AARP membership costs only $16 a year for anyone over age 50, including free membership for spouses or partners (www.aarp.org). AARP’s discounts website features discounts on dozens of products and services including rental cars, hotels, restaurants, clothing and department store chains. AARP also offers an inexpensive driver safety course for drivers over 50 (members and nonmembers alike) that can lower auto insurance premiums by up to 10 percent or more. Popular AARP discounts include: • 20 percent discount on installation or upgrades to ADT home security

systems. • 45 percent off membership to Angie’s List. • 20 percent off purchases from 1-800-FLOWERS.com. • Up to 25 percent off car rentals from Avis and Budget. • Up to 20 percent discount at many hotel chains including Hyatt, Hilton, Wyndham, Best Western, Days Inn and Ramada, among others. • 10 to 20 percent off at many restaurant chains, including Claim Jumper, Denny’s and Outback Steakhouse. • 15 percent off many Geek Squad services from Best Buy. • A free 45-minute consultation with an Allstate Legal Services Network attorney, as well as 20 percent off member attorneys’ fees. A quick Google search will uncover numerous other senior discount resources. One popular site is SeniorDiscounts.com, an online directory of more than 220,000 U.S. business locations that offer discounts to people over 50. Registration is free, although they also offer a $12.95/year premium that offers members-only discounts and other perks. Other good sites include Brad’s Deals, Sciddy.com and Savvy Senior. Other commonly available senior discounts include: • A 15 percent discount on the

lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains for travelers over age 62. • Greyhound offers a 5 percent discount on unrestricted fares (over 62). • Southwest Airlines offers senior fares (over 65). Although not necessarily their lowest available rates, Southwest’s senior fares are fully refundable. • The U.S. Geologic Survey senior pass (over 62) provides free lifetime access to more than 2,000 government-managed recreational sites (including national parks), as well as discounts on camping and other amenities. Senior passes cost $10 in person or $20 by mail (http:// store.usgs.gov/pass/senior.html). • Verizon Wireless offers discounted mobile phone service for subscribers over 65. • Both Walgreens and Rite Aid offer monthly senior discount days for members of their rewards programs when most non-prescription items are 15 to 20 percent off. Ask your neighborhood pharmacy if they offer similar programs. In addition, many restaurants, department stores, movie theaters, museums, theme parks, banks, credit card issuers, utilities (including gas and electric, water, garbage, telephone and cable) and other

businesses offer special discounts or promotions for seniors. Always ask before your purchase is rung up. Bottom line: Abundant resources are available to help seniors save money on purchases large and small. You just have to do a little research – and ask whether senior discounts are available. Remember, 10 percent here and 20 percent there can really add up. Jason Alderman directs Visa’s financial education programs. To participate in a free, online Financial Literacy and Education Summit on April 2, 2014, go to www.practicalmoneyskills.com/ summit2014.

Wells of Life’s mission has been to provide clean water to communities in Eastern Africa. Their team is committed to building water wells in communities that are otherwise forced to travel miles a day for just a few buckets of fresh water. By building these wells, Wells of Life gives the local communities a new chance at sustainable living. Wells of Life participated as Platinum Sponsors at The First Official Movieguide® Awards Backstage Gifting Suite Experience in Association with the 22nd Movieguide® Awards. The awards gala and gifting suite benefited Good News Communication Inc., a non-profit ministry dedicated to promoting positive values in the entertainment industry according to Christian morals. The Awards ceremony was hosted by comedian Bill Engval and included special performances by Richie Sambora and Billy Ray Cyrus. Thankfully with the help of the Movieguide® Awards Gifting Suite Experience, Hollywood will gain awareness and join us on our mission of providing clean, safe drinking water,” states Nick Jordan Founder of WOL. Along with Jordan, board members Michelle Yegsigian, Pete Callahan, and Michelle McCullagh also were on hand to represent Wells of Life. At the gala and gifting suite experience, Wells of Life representatives mingled with studio executives and celebrities where they were able to introduce Wells of Life and discuss their philanthropic goals. During the gifting suite, Jordan, Yegsigian, Callahan, and McCullagh, presented specially made gift bags for the celebrities in attendance. The ecofriendly, reusable gift bags included baseball caps and t-shirts with the Wells of Life logo, handmade glass heart necklaces that acted as a symbol of the Wells of Life mission, and an invitation to their exclusive gala in Mission Viejo for October 25, 2014 with world-renowned Irish tenor Anthony Kearns performing (he is a founding member of The Irish Tenors). Alexander Berman Earns Spot on 2015 Summerall Guards Cadet Alexander Maxwell Berman of San Clemente, CA, has earned a position on the 2015 Summerall Guards, a silent drill platoon at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. Cadet Berman is among 61 rising seniors that have gone through rigorous drill and physical training to be selected as members of the Summerall Guards. Cadets are chosen for their ability to precisely execute selected portions of the drill series they will perform as Summerall Guards, as well as, their demonstrated level of physical fitness and stamina. The 2015 Summerall Guards made its debut on March 15, 2014, during Corps Day Weekend. The Corps of Cadets this year celebrated its 171st birthday. The platoon was created in 1932 and named for Gen. Charles P. Summerall, former chief of staff of

the U.S. Army and president of The Citadel from 1931 until 1953. Its purpose is to exemplify the exactness and thoroughness with which Citadel cadets are trained. The drill, which is verbally passed down from class to class, is a unique series of movements based on the old German close order drill and performed to a silent count. Each year’s Summerall Guards take responsibility for teaching the next year’s unit the intricate steps of the drill. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a public, coeducational military college in Charleston, S.C., that offers a classic military education for young men and women seeking a college experience that is challenging, meaningful and academically strong. With the core values of honor, duty and respect, The Citadel prepares principled leaders for the military as well as the global workplace.

California Festival of Speed: Largest Porsche Event in the Southwest The 13th running of the California Festival of Speed is fast approaching! This Porsche Club of America event is the largest Porsche event in the Southwest. At its core, the Festival is a PCA Club Race, however, this weekend features something for everyone. Autocross, Concours, Time Trial, Pirelli Cup Racing, Parade Laps, Porsche Corral and super car displays and a hospitality area featuring a vendor row, food court, goodie store and more. The 13th running of the California Festival of Speed is fast approaching! Hosted by Zone 8 of the Porsche Club of America, this event will take place April 4-6 at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA. The Festival is the largest Porsche event in the Southwest. At its core, the Festival is a PCA Club Race, which is amateur racing at its best. This sport sees Porsches old and new out on the track for a weekend of exciting wheel-towheel action. Of course, even more important than having fun, safety is the primary goal as nobody has corporate sponsors bankrolling them or their cars. Everybody wants to go home in one piece, with the only hits being taken by bruised egos. Much more than a club race, however, this weekend features something for everyone. Autocross, Page 14

Concours, Time Trial, Pirelli Cup Racing, Parade Laps, Porsche Corral and a hospitality area featuring a vendor row and goodie store and more. This is a festival because it has something for everybody! At the Festival the autocross isn’t intended to be a normal competitive event. Rather, the goal is to try to capture the attention of those that won’t normally seek out a performance driving event. Maybe, just maybe, they’ll get caught up in the excitement of the races and be willing to give it a try themselves. From there, who knows? There are plenty of autocross events throughout Zone 8 waiting for them should they catch the bug from this “taste of autocross.” The Time Trial is the perfect breeding ground for future club racers, and a great stepping stone up from Autocross. This event emphasizes learning how to deal with traffic (in addition to car control). Their final racing event is the Pirelli Cup racing team. This group of award winning pros always join for a few sessions each day to practice for their upcoming series events; which certainly contributes to the excitement of the weekend. For those that aren’t driving, the center of activity is vendor row. They feature dozens of vendors that specialize in products for your

Porsche and more, as well as a food court of LA food trucks. Surrounding vendor row will be several car displays. On Saturday they feature the Porsche Timeline, a car show that this year will feature a display of the four and eight cylinder Porsches that have produced over the years. Next to the timeline will be a Concours, where the Porsches will be judged and their owners rewarded for their efforts in the cleanliness and preparation of their vehicles. On Sunday they will have a Supercar Paddock which will feature exotic and rare cars of all types. During the lunch break each day, the track will be open for Parade laps.

For a small fee you too can see the track from the racers point of view, imagining the excitement as you take your car through the twists and turns of the track. Plenty of parking is available each day so don’t be afraid to come down to the California Festival of Speed. Saturday is Porsche Corral day, where attendees bringing Porsches will be parked according to model. Sunday is Car Club day, where participating car clubs will each have their own parking area available. 8 Tips for Pet Parents on Suitable Etiquette for Pets 1. Keep barking under control: The pet parent with the barking dog is most likely not the most popular neighbor. Although barking is not always preventable, ensure pets receive proper training so they don’t bark incessantly. Avoid leaving dogs alone for long periods of time, especially outdoors. Making sure pets have enough exercise and plenty of toys to provide mental stimulation will help curb barking. For tips and tricks, consult one of Petco’s Positive Dog Trainers. All Petco dog trainers are certified in AKC Canine Good Citizen and STARR Puppy testing. The AKC STARR Puppy training is designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. The AKC Canine Good Citizen certification is a widely-recognized high standard of polite behavior and excellent preparation for therapy dog training. Each dog who completes these courses will receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. 2. Don’t let cats wander: Although cats can exhibit very independent behavior, the outdoor cat that is always wandering into their neighbor’s yard, may not be welcomed with open arms. Keep cats from visiting the family next door by providing

them a cozy space inside the home with enough toys to keep them mentally stimulated throughout the day. Petco’s Playscapes Modular Cat Furniture will ensure cats can satisfy their need for exploration and climbing without wanting to leave the house. 3. Keep the hair and smell at bay: When dining out with pets, ensure dogs are properly groomed to keep shedding to a minimum. A smelly dog shedding its winter coat is never pleasant near food so bathe pets regularly and use a shed control shampoo. When entertaining at home, make sure guests want to return by removing pet hair from furniture and smelling of the animal. Be sure the cat’s litter box is scooped daily and use an odor absorbent litter such as Petco Dual Odor Guard Scoopable Cat Litter. Keep small animal and reptile habitats clean and use potty pads, like Four Paws Wee Wee pads to help cut down on guests stepping in a new puppy’s “accident.” 4. Clean up waste: Walking into the front yard and stepping in a pile of poop from a neighbor’s dog can be upsetting. It may sound simple, but be sure to pick up waste when walking a dog. Products, like the eco-friendly

Earth Rated Poop Bags, easily hook to the dog’s leash making it simple to carry along on a walk. 5. Obey the rules: Keep dogs leashed at all times while at parks and in other dog-friendly public places. Excited dogs who are off-leash may run and jump on people or children or hurt themselves by running away from their pet parent. Only take a dog off-leash at a dog park that allows it. Remember to obey all marked rules at the dog park and don’t forget to close the gate behind you so other dogs can’t escape. 6. Positive reinforcement is key: Barking orders is not the way to encourage a pet to behave, especially when it is done in public. Disciplining pets in front of others can make people uncomfortable. Instead, train pets by reinforcing good behavior with loving attention or a treat. Keep a calm tone and never raise your voice, especially when in public. 7. Use table manners: Petco understands that pet parents love their animals, but others may be uncomfortable when certain people take it to the extreme, especially while at a restaurant. Never feed pets from the pet parent’s lap or plate. Not only can certain people food be

dangerous for pets, but this behavior can encourage pets to beg. Always feed pets from their own food bowl away from human consumption. 8. Not everyone loves animals: It may be hard to believe, especially since pets are such a part of family life, but not everyone is an animal lover. Some people may be allergic to dogs or cats and some can even fear animals. To avoid an unpleasant run in, never let pets run up to a stranger. When taking out other types of pets like birds, reptiles or rabbits, keep in mind that others may feel uncomfortable around these animals. On the other hand, these pets may attract more attention since they are not seen in public as often, so keep them safe by always encouraging strangers to ask before petting or handling them.

Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. The Rise of the Nanny Gadget by Rob Walker Are you brushing your teeth properly? Are you eating too fast? Are you slouching? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then perhaps you should consider a trendy new type of gadget that I’m going to call the nanny device. These are devices that nag you about these and your many other personal failures. (No offense.) These nanny devices seem to have proliferated in the past year. The forthcoming Oral-B smart toothbrush may be “disappointed i n y o u r b r u s h i n g , ” a s Ya h o o Tech reported from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week: The gizmo hooks up to an app and provides “realtime feedback” on your oral hygiene skills, joining a similar smart toothbrush from Kolibree. Last year, the smart HAPIfork attracted a wave of attention with its promise to vibrate if it catches you eating at an unhealthy pace. A company called Lumo offers a belt-like contraption that zings you into straightening your spine and has been pre-selling a clipon device that similarly prods you to “bring your shoulders back and lift your head.” Sensoria Fitness Socks strive to straighten out your running gait. If that’s still not enough hightech mothering for you, you can preorder a more all-purpose system, reportedly due out soon, that promises to let you equip a variety of household objects with sensors, endowing them with the power to pester you to take your vitamins, drink more water and close the refrigerator. This product is called … Mother. Mother and its sensors. Perhaps the future will yet bring traitorous machines we fear, like HAL, or seductive technology we literally fall in love with, as in Her. But what seems to be happening now is an onslaught of technically sophisticated nagging. It may sound like I’m making fun of nag tech — and, well, yeah, OK, I guess I am. But I may as well just confess: I’ve preordered the newer Lumo device. I have terrible posture, and I can’t quite see myself sitting around with a book balanced on my head at this point in my life. So maybe this device can straighten me up? In any case, the nanny avalanche is partly a logical result of converging tech trends: the so-called “quantified self” Page 18

movement, the popularity of various fitness-tracking apps and gadgets, and the future of communicative, WiFi-connected devices promised by the muchballyhooed Internet of Things. The Kolibree toothbrush, which will coach you as you brush. C l e a r l y, t h e t e c h n o - n a n n y supply is here. But what about demand? Do we really want data-driven machine nagging in our lives? “We all want a life coach to a certain extent,” suggests Christian DeFeo, innovation manager and futurist at tech firm Newark Element14. Sometimes, being coached by an object might be “better than dealing with another person.” For starters, the gadgets promise factual accuracy — maybe your mom was right about your slouching; maybe she

The San Clemente News

wasn’t. I’m not going to be able to bicker with that Lumo gadget. On the other hand, DeFeo adds, technology is also far easier to ignore if you just don’t feel like being hectored: Unlike your mom, these things tend to have an on/ off switch. And no doubt some buyers of magic diet-control forks and judgmental toothbrushes will be roughly analogous to people who buy a gym membership and never go. DeFeo speculates that other nanny tech users will be those among us who are already conscientious in our behaviors — a tool, basically, for positive reinforcement, or just self-congratulation. In other words, Nagging 2.0 is also a function of an American tendency that is not new at all — the self-improvement urge, which has sold countless unread books

and inspired endless forgotten motivational talks. Translating this bottomless desire for shortcuts to a better life into taking orders from a toothbrush raises a familiar debate: Is technology making us smarter and better — or simply more dependent on technology? When we modify our behavior to accommodate our devices — speaking in a way Siri understands, crafting social media expression for maximum shareability — it arguably raises questions about free will itself, and whether our new tools work for us, or the other way around. DeFeo points to a scenario in which a smartcar responds to what it deems your poor driving habits by causing your insurance rates to go up. The most pessimistic critique of nanny objects accuses them of amounting to “social engineering disguised as product engineering.” But … really? I think this category should be parsed d i f f e r e n t l y. W h a t ’ s a c t u a l l y fascinating about the technology of nagging is that it involves explicitly seeking a tool to route around situations where free will has failed. I’ve chastised myself about my slouchiness for decades; if this gizmo can help me, I’m for it! And if it gets on my nerves, I’ll toss it in a drawer and slump back into my previous routine. As Marshall McLuhan most certainly did not write, “We shape our tools, and thereafter our tools badger us relentlessly until we turn the damn things off.”
