Casa Romantica’s Artist-in-Residence Exhibits at Casa Romantica Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens artist-in-residence, Gianne Harper, will exhibit her works at Casa Romantica in an upcoming exhibition, titled In the Garden of the Casa. The exhibition will be open to the public from Saturday May 11 through Sunday June 9. In the Garden of the Casa is the culmination of a three month residency during which time Harper has captured the Casa’s exquisite bluff-top gardens and plant-life in a series of unique and striking canvasses. Unlike traditional plein air artists who paint in small format, tightly, using a distant subject, Harper chooses large formats and open brush work. She uses the painting technique of “negative space”, compressing dimensional planes for the depth of field, so that the spectator sees the landscape subject globally, yet close up. Harper uses an old master technique of détrempe, one of the original forms of painting. Unlike many plein air artists who are able to carry their paints, brushes and canvasses in a backpack to a chosen rural spot or ocean bluff to create their art, Harper’s is an intensive artisanal process that involves stretching the canvas, hot glue canvas preparation, fabrication of natural primers, fabrication of natural painting medium, and mixing the palette in front of the subject, rather than using “direct tube colors.”
According to Harper, “I paint with the most natural approach adapted to landscape and garden; painting in “plein air” in front of the subject. Mine is an interpretive impressionism, catching the vibration of the living and growing plant in the ever-changing natural light.” In addition to its creative significance, Harper’s work sends an important message in relation to the growing need for water conservation. “I am at the intersection of art and the environment. Through my paintings, I inspire people to see the inherent beauty in plants and to plant water wise gardens. Water conservation is one of the most important social issues today and my painting brings this to the public consciousness; a convergence of art and the sustainable garden.” Prior to her residency at Casa Romantica, Harper completed a residency in the Domaine du Royal on the southern coast of France, which focused on art as the inspiration of sustainable gardening. In concert with her exhibition, Harper will speak at the Casa on May 16th at 7:00 P.M. In her presentation, Harper will talk about the inspiration for her work and her artisanal painting techniques. She will also share anecdotes from her many residences painting esteemed gardens around the world. Tickets for Harper’s evening presentation are now
on sale and can be purchased by calling the Casa office at 949.498.2139 ext. 10. In the spring of 2014, Harper will paint on the Italian Ligurian Coast at the renowned Thomas Hanbury Gardens. Harper has been invited to show at the Descanso Gardens, and is in negotiations with the Annenberg Foundation for a residency at Sunnylands.
Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is open to the public Tuesday – Thursday from 11:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. and Friday – Sunday, from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Closed Mondays. Admission $5. Children 12 and under, free. Admission price includes entrance to the permanent and rotating exhibition galleries.

Free Mother’s Day Gifts - Love Doesn’t Have to cost money Are you short on cash this Mother’s Day, and desperately searching for a free gift you can surprise your Mom with on her big day? Well, you are in luck because Moms are sentimental creatures. How many times did your Mom set aside the diamonds or roses your father brought home and marvel over the macaroni necklace and card you brought home from school? Here are a few ideas to get you started on your free Mother’s Day gifts. You can surprise your Mom with a few of these gifts, or go all out and give them all to her this year, without spending a dime! Coupons Give your Mom coupons this year on Mother’s Day. No, don’t sit down and cut out all the coupons from the Sunday paper. Get out the doilies, construction paper, and crayons, and make up some super cute coupons for your Mom to cash in whenever she pleases. Some examples could be: “One Free Back Rub,” “A Walk In The Park With Yours Truly,” or “Good For One Free Clean House.” Try to make the coupons personal, or for something you know she really loves to do. For example, if your Mom is an avid hiker you could make a coupon to take a hike with her at her favorite location.
Photo Collage Get out the craft supplies and put together an elaborate photo collage for your Mom on Mother’s Day. The more frill and photos you add, the more effort it will appear you put into it. Google a few sweet poems and quotes about Moms, and include those on the collage. Some appropriate song lyrics could also be added. While you got the craft supplies out, throw together an elaborate Mother’s Day card. If you make it personal with photos of you two together it will out-do any store bought card she receives year. Breakfast in Bed Breakfast in bed never grows old, and has withstood the test of time as a monumental gesture. And, the best part about it is breakfast is the cheapest meal to prepare! Sneak into your Mom’s kitchen while she is still asleep on Mother’s Day, and whip up every breakfast food she has in the kitchen. Then, surprise her with a smorgasbord of breakfast foods before she gets out of bed. While she is eating her breakfast buffet, present her with your card and coupons.

Flowers Flowers have become a traditional Mother’s Day gift. Unfortunately, stores and floral shops have caught on to this, and bouquets are pretty expensive during the month of May. Luckily, Mother’s Day always falls in the Spring, so you have another option. Pick your Mom a bouquet of wild-flowers from your local park or playground, or alongside the road if you live in a rural area. If you are desperate you can always borrow a few flowers from your neighbors’ garden, but don’t forget to ask their permission.
Give The Gift That Keeps On Giving If your Mom is a movie fan, you could surprise her with an instant Netflix or Redbox membership on Mother’s Day. Inside your home-made Mother’s day card, you could include the username and password for her new account. Both sites offer a membership to watch unlimited movies online for only $8.00 a month. The first month is free on both sites, so you won’t have to start forking over the $8.00 until the next month.

Life’s Lessons from Your Mother By Bryan Golden Your mother tried to teach you some valuable lessons. Moms have a unique ability to impart essential wisdom. Specializing in music lessons for all ages OC Music in RSM is very pleased to welcome back Stephanie B. - one of South Orange County’s favorite music teachers over the past ten years. Stephanie has been teaching voice and giving piano lessons to children in South Orange County for over ten years. She began studying music herself when she was only six years old under the tutelage of several music teachers who specialized in teaching beginners. As a vocalist Stephanie loves to sing and has performed in churches and other venues around Southern California, Brazil, England, France, China, and the Philippines. She also had the pleasure to direct a women’s vocal ensemble that toured Thailand and Vietnam. While Stephanie’s formal vocal training is mostly classical, the truth is, she teaches basic essential vocal techiniques that are important building blocks for learning how to properly sing in any and every style of music. Stephanie has an MA in Literature from Dominguez Hills, but her lifelong passion for music compelled her to pursue an advanced music degree at Azusa Pacific University, where she earned a BA in Music Arranging. While attending APU she continued to play the piano and regularly performed with the University Choir, the Oratorio Choir and the schools Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

52nd Annual Patroness Tea by the Sea On a breezy Thursday afternoon with sailboats in the background, the Adoption Guild of Southern Orange County celebrated its 52nd Annual Patroness Tea by the Sea. Beneficiary for the Event is Holy Family Services Adoption & Foster Care Agency (“HFS”). Guild President Jeanette Perry welcomed approximately 200 guests to the beautiful Lido Isle Yacht Club, which was bathed in a sea of pink and lavender for the occasion. Proceeds from the Tea, Silent Auction, and vendors benefit potential adoptive and foster children located throughout Southern California. While guests dined on light tea fare, Ms. Julie Brown, Executive Director of HFS, introduced new Parents Dan & Erica and their beautiful baby daughter, Liliana. Dan shared his inspirational experience with the adoption process, the initial disappointment of a cancellation and joy of success in adopting Liliana. HFS was a support every step of the way, he stated. In the end, a loving family was created. This Tea was highlighted by “Fashion Show Fun” featuring Adoption Guild Members modeling clothes by Tropez Boutique of Newport Beach. Jewelry was provided by William Harold & Sons of Newport Beach. Member Models included Kelly Knight, Lorna Pattengill, Gemma Snell, Laurie Moroch, Julie Ahlert, Julie Sherwin, and Linda Torr. The hit of the show was Guild member Katie Richardson, herself an adoptee, accompanied by her daughter and son, Boston and Austin Richardson. Entertaining the Audience with sparkling fashion commentary were Lido Isle residents Cathy & Tim O’Neil. Silent Auction items included an array of interesting packages highlighted with a week in a Penthouse suite at the Ala Moana Hotel, Waikiki, Kate Spade purse, Hermes scarves, Jo Malone Perfume and party for 10, La Mer Facial Cream and Serum Collection, a hair makeover and products by Laurel Chirico of Platino Salon, and Myer Beef Gift Certificates. Tea by the Sea also featured shopping with boutiques such as The Passionate Collector, Treasured Bliss offering handmade candles, Kohala, with handmade natural fabric jackets, Tropez Boutique, Love Reusable Bags, The Women’s Door, William Harold Jewelers, and Olive Oil and Beyond, with a selection of flavored oils and vinegars. All vendors donated a portion of proceeds to Adoption Guild. The Tea Menu was created by “Cuisine by Jeanine” and featured layers of cucumbers and watercress finger sandwiches; rolled crepes with asparagus and fresh dill; open-faced mini-sandwiches of egg, curry chicken and ham salad, pinwheels with smoked salmon, cream cheese & capers, savory tarts with goat cheese, dates & bacon and spinach, feta & curried wild rice. Desserts were mini lemon tartlets with assorted berries, chocolate-dipped strawberries, tiny double-chocolate crinkles, and currant scones with raspberry butter. When you swim with a buddy, if one of you has a problem, the other may be able to help, including signaling for assistance from others. At least have someone onshore watching you.
8. Life Jackets = Boating Safety: Some 80% of fatalities associated with boating accidents are from drowning. Most involve people who never expected to end up in the water, but fell overboard or ended up in the water when the boat sank. Children are particularly susceptible to this problem and in many states, children are required to be in lifejackets whenever they are aboard boats. 9. 10. At Home, You’re the Lifeguard: Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in many states for children age one and two. A major reason for this is home pools, which can be death traps for toddlers. Many of these deaths occur in the few moments it takes a parent to answer a telephone or doorbell. NEVER leave a child alone anywhere near a pool. Make sure it is completely fenced, that the fence is locked, and that there is no access from the home to the pool. Don’t let your child or a neighbor’s child get into the pool when you’re not there.

Mother’s Day Isn’t Just for Mothers: A Brief History and Ideas for a Unique Mother’s Day Celebration by Bridgitte Williams On Mother’s Day, we celebrate the wonderful moms in our life. It is a joyful holiday, full of love, gifts and laughter. Families gather to honor the mom. In some families, mom isn’t always known as mom. She may be the aunt, the sister, the relative or friend that raised you. She may be a he. Yes, I know that there is a Father’s day. Still, that does not quite show the true meaning of motherhood. So, on Mother’s day, do not be afraid to honor the mom in your life. Be creative. Be different. Be brave. Do not worry about what others may think. It would be a shame to leave the one who raised you out of this celebration. I notice that Mother’s day cards are very unique, this year. You can find a card to suit that significant other that you consider to be your mother. It is not hard. Be daring. You will surprise and delight the person that you love most, in your life. A cake made to honor this person works great. You can personalize it to say exactly what you wish. If you want to give a Mother’s Day party for this person, that works even better. It can be a surprise party. It can
be anything you want it to be. Make this day unique. Do not be restricted by old standards. Go all out. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the first national Mother’s day. Julia Ward Howe wrote the original Mother’s day proclamation, in 1870, as a call for peace. Her idea came from Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, who attempted to start what was know as Mother’s work days. These days were intended to promote sanitary conditions through the civil war era. This caused Mother’s Day to become well known and spread to all states, even before it was declared a holiday. Now, many countries celebrate this wonderful holiday. It is also said that the very first Mother’s Day occurred in ancient Greece. Mother’s Day has a tradition of being unique. Mother’s Day has a great history of being all about change, peace, support, teaching and helping others. That is the true meaning of being a

mom. Even if you are not called mom, you certainly have a right to be celebrated, on this great day, for raising children as your own, even if they are not yours, biologically. ACCLAIMED ORGAN VIRTUOSO, HECTOR OLIVERA TO PERFORM BENEFIT CONCERT ON LEGENDARY HAZEL WRIGHT PIPE ORGAN The free concert held May 18 at the future Christ Cathedral seeks to share the beauty and dynamism of the world’s fourth largest pipe organ (in a church) with the public and to seek help in raising funds for its refurbishment. The centerpiece, and perhaps most striking visual element of the internationally recognized Crystal Cathedral is the world’s fourth largest pipe organ within a church and largest European built organ in America. With over 16,000 individual wind pipes – the organ is recognized globally as a unique and powerful instrument. Beginning service in 1982, the present instrument is a marvel of technology and innovation, combining components taken from the historic AeolianSkinner Organ, originally played in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City and the fivemanual Ruffatti Organ of the church’s former Sanctuary in the Arboretum. A new string organ and east and west Chamade divisions were added by Ruffatti to complete this immense and complex instrument. The pipe organ is actually a combination of fourteen organs or divisions that can be played in any combination from the largest drawknob console in the world.
During its 30-year performance-life, the pipe organ has been exposed to all manner of deterioration and is in need of a comprehensive refurbishment. In an effort to preserve this unique instrument, the Orange Catholic Foundation (OCF) is raising funds to restore this masterpiece of engineering and design. The renovation and re-installation process is expected to last two years and cost close to $2 million. The Christ Cathedral Organ Restoration Committee and OCF hope to raise the requisite funds over the coming months and begin dismantling the pipe organ and preparing its parts to be sent half-way around the world for repair and renovation. Some of the work will take place locally while the majority the restoration will happen at the Italian workshops of Fratelli Ruffatti in Padua, ITALY. The benefit pipe organ concert to begin the fundraising and restoration effort will be held May 18, 2013 from 8 – 10 p.m. Admission is Free. To register your attendance visit http://organbenefit.eventbrite.com/ The concert location is the Future Christ Cathedral (Formerly Crystal Cathedral) at 13280 Chapman Ave. Garden Grove, CA 92840
SCHS Hosts Special Olympics Competition
Students Volunteer to Host Third Annual Event Special Olympics were held last week at San Clemente High School. George Duarte, the principal expressed how pleased he was to be able to host the third annual Special Olympics. In addition to San Clemente High School, students and staff from Dana Hills High School, Tesoro High School, and Vista Del Mar Middle School were in attendance. Events included a torch relay, the shot put, the 100m dash, long jump, swim races, tug-of-war, “fun” games including sack races, three-legged races, and hula-hoops. Of course, the festivities concluded with an awards ceremony and closing festivities. Page 16

The fourth largest pipe organ in the world is comprised of 287 ranks and over 16,000 individual pipes, all playable from a five-manual console. The South Balcony divisions of the organ contain 5,000 pipes, and in the East and West Balconies are 549 horizontal trumpet pipes – the largest collection of such pipes in the world. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mr. Olivera began playing the pipe organ when he was three. At age five he played for the legendary Eva Perón; at twelve he entered the University of Buenos Aires and by eighteen had performed for heads of state and celebrities throughout Latin America. When offered a scholarship at the renowned Juilliard School of Music in New York, he moved to the United States. Three years later, Mr. Olivera’s outstanding professional concert career was launched when he won the AGO’s National Improvisation Contest. Mr. Olivera has performed solo concerts throughout the USA, Europe, Asia, Australia, Central and Latin America and as guest soloist
with prominent symphony orchestras worldwide. Whether in a prestigious venue like Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, Constitution Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, or in conjunction with a celebrated event like the Olympic games or the Classical Newport Music Festival, the most sophisticated and demanding organ aficionados claim that Maestro Hector Olivera is ‘one of the greatest organists in the world today.’

wings of freedom at Lyon Air Museum The Wings of Freedom Tour of the WWII Vintage Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator and North American P-51 Mustang Announce Unique Display at Lyon Air Museum – John Wayne Airport from May 8 to May 13 Participating in the Collings Foundation’s WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine” WWII Heavy Bomber, Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft” WWII Heavy Bomber and P-51 Mustang, will fly into John Wayne Airport at Lyon Air Museum in Santa Ana, CA for a visit from May 8 to May 13. This is a rare opportunity to visit, explore, and learn more about these unique and rare treasures of aviation history. The B-17 is one of only 10 in flying condition in the United States, the B-24J and Full Dual Control P-51C Mustang are the sole remaining examples of their type flying in the World. Visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out - $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12 is requested for access to up-close viewing and tours through the inside of the aircraft and through the Lyon Air Museum. Discounted rate of $9 for seniors and Veterans. Visitors may also experience the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to actually take a 30-minute flight aboard these rare aircraft. Flights
on either the B-17 or B-24 are $425 per person. Get some “stick time” in the world’s greatest fighter! P-51 flights are $2,200 for a half hour and $3,200 for a full hour. For reservations and information on flight experiences call 800-568-8924. The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR will be on display at Lyon Air Museum, 19300 Ike Jones Rd in Santa Ana located at John Wayne Airport in Orange County California. It opened at Lyon Air Museum – John Wayne Airport at 2:00 PM on May 8 and will be on display at Lyon Air Museum until the aircraft departs May 13 at 12:00 PM. Hours of ground tours and display are: 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Wednesday, May 8; 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Tuesday, May 9 through May 12; 9:00 AM through 12:00 PM on Monday, May 13. The 30-minute bomber flight experiences are normally scheduled before and after the ground tour times above. P-51 Mustang flights available throughout the day. The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR travels the nation a flying tribute to the flight crews who flew them, the ground crews who maintained them, the workers who built them, the soldiers, sailors and airmen they helped protect; and the citizens and families that share the freedom that they helped preserve. The B-17 & B-24 were the backbone of the
American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945 and were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission. Despite the risks of antiaircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the harrowing environment of subzero temperatures, many B-17s and B-24s safely brought their crews home. The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers “Little Friend” – saving countless crews from attacking axis fighters. After the war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum to rebuild a nation in post-war prosperity and therefore very few were spared. The
rarity of the B-17, B-24 & P-51 - and their importance to telling the story of WWII is why the Collings Foundation continues to fly and display the aircraft nationwide. At each location we encourage local veterans and their families to visit and share their experiences and stories with the public. For aviation enthusiasts, the tour provides opportunity for the museum to come to the visitor and not the other way around! Visitors can find out more by visiting our website at www.collingsfoundation.org.
