Boating Community Comes Alive Memorial Day Weekend Some Safety Tips from BoatUS After the brutal winter there’s a mad rush for boaters to get back on the water for the summer boating season’s annual kick-off, Memorial Day weekend. But the nation’s largest recreational boaters group, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) says “not so fast,” and urges boaters to be prepared by following these five tips: Ensure all safety gear – life jackets, radio, flares and other items – are ready to go. If you have the newer, more comfortable inflatable life jackets, be sure to open them up, inspect and test by filling with air and let them sit overnight to ensure they will keep you buoyant. A free Vessel Safety Check is offered by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and US Power Squadrons can also be requested by going to www.safetyseal.net. Avoid a springtime sinking by ensuring any drive gear such as outdrive bellows (inboard/outboard), shaft packings (inboards), livewell and engine cooling plumbing, or through-hull fittings are not cracked, rotted or severely corroded. Boaters, in their rush to get back on the water, sometimes take short cuts on these critical safety and spring
commissioning items that end up biting them on their undersides. Follow the step-by-step free spring commissioning checklist at www. BoatUS.com/springchecklist. For freshwater boaters: If you keep your boat in a marina or dock that has electricity service, test and inspect to ensure no stray current is leaking into the water where it could potentially lead to
Electric Shock Drowning, an often misunderstood and overlooked safety item. See http://www.BoatUS. com/esdexplained for more. Have a back up plan to get home in case your boat won’t get you back to the ramp or dock. On water or on the road assistance for a disabled boat trailer can be summoned with the free BoatUS Towing App, available at www.BoatUS.com/app.
Have fun and make everyone an important part of your crew. In some areas, boating traffic could be significantly up so use the extra sets of eyes as lookouts, share the sunblock and have plenty of water aboard to stay hydrated. If alcohol is in your plans, celebrate the opening of the season back at the dock or home where you’ll be in a much safer spot.

Top Chops for the Grill
When looking for inspiration on the grill, nothing beats the tender, juicy pork chop. This hearty protein is a versatile canvas for a wide range of mouthwatering rubs, glazes and marinades that will ignite taste buds with bold new flavors. To fire up your grill creativity, look to simple, fuss-free recipes that pack big flavor. Take your pork chops on a jaunt through the Mediterranean with a savory Basil-Garlic Rub. Or, spice up the chop with a Fire-Lovers Rub, featuring a robust blend of Southwestern-inspired spices. No matter what tastes you crave, the pork chop is your perfect partner on the grill all year long. For more on how to get the most
out of pork on the grill, turn to these tips from the National Pork Board: Know your chops. Did you know there are five different pork chop cuts? From the richly marbled blade chop to the lean iconic loin chop, there are many delicious options for quick-cooking chops on the grill. Ask your retailer or butcher to help choose the cut that’s right for you—it might just result in a new favorite. Make it your own. Pork chops pair perfectly with a virtually endless variety of tasty rubs and marinades. Experiment with your own flavor combinations by taking standby recipes and swapping out or adding ingredients to suit your family’s tastes. Mind your cook time. For
juicy, tender pork, the USDA now recommends cooking chops, roasts and tenderloins to an internal temperature of 145°F with a 3-minute rest. Be sure to use a digital cooking thermometer for the most delicious results. For more details on pork chop cuts, tips and mouthwatering recipes, visit www.PorkBeInspired.com. You can also follow the National Pork Board on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ PorkBeInspired and on Twitter @ AllAboutPork. by Amanda Austin Memorial Day is more than just a weekend off from work, an excuse to throw a picnic, or a reason to take a weekend trip, it is a national holiday. The history behind Memorial Day seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle throughout the years. With May 27th growing closer, take time to familiarize yourself with the history of Memorial Day, and why we celebrate this holiday. Memorial Day, originally known as “Decoration Day,” was established on May 5 1868 by General John Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. The first observation of Memorial Day took place on May 30th 1868, by decorating the graves of fallen Union and Confederate soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery. Here is an excerpt from General Logan’s “General Orders No. 11,” officially declaring “Decoration Day.” “The 30th day of May, 1868, is des-
The San Clemente News
ignated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.” New York was the first state to officially recognize Memorial Day as a Holiday in 1873, and all of the Northern states had followed suit by 1890. The Southern states didn’t recognize Memorial Day until after World War 1 when it was changed from recognizing soldiers who lost their lives fighting in the Civil War, to soldiers who lost their lives fighting in any war America participated in. The reason that students and employees are given the day off on Memorial Day, is so they can properly
observe the holiday. When the holiday was originally established nationally it was intended to give patrons the opportunity to visit the graves of our fallen soldiers, attend memorials, fly the American flag at half staff until noon, and acknowledge the “National Moment of Remembrance” at 3:00 PM. The “National Moment of Remembrance” is when everyone has a moment of silence and if you are in a public place “Taps” is played. So, this year on Memorial weekend take a moment to remember why you don’t have to go to work or school. If you are taking a trip with your family, make your rest stop at a memorial or Veteran’s cemetery and observe the men who have fought for our country. If you are having a get together at your home, or attend one at someone else’s home, give a little speech at 3:00 and call for a moment of silence to remind your friends and family why you are all able to get together that weekend.
And I’m proud to be an American, Where at least I know I’m free. And I won’t forget the men who died, Who gave that right to me. ~Lee Greenwood

John French and Center Court Ace the Competition in the USHJA International Hunter Derby
John French and Center Court with Melissa Brandes of Blenheim EquiSports Photos by: CapturedMomentPhoto.com Calm and cool described the unusual weather as well as the unusually talented horse who earned the win in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. After a rainy morning that drenched Del Mar, the cool afternoon air created an interesting challenge for the high performance hunters. However, sixyear-old Center Court, piloted by John French, impressed the judges from the first jump. The eleven elements in the Classic Round included a three-obstacle line requiring five strides from fences two to three and three to four. The flowing course continued with several long bending lines and three 4’3” options. The two panels of judges included the honorable Susie Schoellkopf and Mickey Maestro on Panel One and Bill Ellis sat with Rob Gage as Panel Two. Four professionals earned two spots each in the Handy Round. With top twelve scores ranging from 156 to 184, Nick Haness returned in the twelfth position on Karina Sanchez’s Zanzibar and in the fourth position on the Spring Classic III Derby Winner, Countdown (Sachi Porto, owner). Michael Leon rode West Coast Equine Partners’ C Coast Z and Celano (Robert Peters II, owner) Page 8
in the tenth and sixth spots. Tara Metzner was sitting eighth on Davlyn Farms’ Come Monday and third on Chad Keenum’s High Five. And finally Derby veteran John French piloted the top two horses, previous Derby winner Soldier (Elizabeth Gabler, owner) and the young Center Court (Hiller Farms, owner), who came into the second round with a pair of 90s, four points ahead of Solider and ten points ahead of High Five. Emma Waldfogel aboard Kings Peak was the one amateur who battled it out with the pros in the second round. The Handy Round required choosing an option of 3’6” or 4’3’ vertical as jump one, galloping up a small hill to negotiate fence three followed immediately by a trot jump, directly to another option with either a bold one-stride at 3’9” in and 4’ out or an even bolder 4’3” two-stride. Scores in the eighties with wellearned Bonus points made for an exciting end to the competitive class. Known for his handiness, Haness and seven-year-old Countdown moved up two places with 18 total bonus points combined with scores of 82 and 87, for a well-earned second place. But the equine star of the day was Center Court, expertly piloted by John French. The pair earned 88 and 88 with 11 total bonus points
The San Clemente News
for a commanding ten point lead and the win. French recognized the horse’s ability at a young age, and went slowly as he matured. “We bought him as a four-year-old in England. I saw a video of him that I really liked. We didn’t do much with him last year, just a few shows. He turned six this month.” “He is the bravest horse,” the winning rider explained. “We started him in the First Years in Thermal, but there aren’t too many horses that can jump the big jumps like he can, so I thought why not do him in the High Performance. He was champion one week in Thermal, one week during the Blenheim Spring Series and also here at Ranch & Coast.” French then commented on today’s performance. “I’m just really happy with him. His first round was amazing. It was one of those rounds you remember for a while. He jumped so slow and so high over everything.” And the praise continued. “He’s probably one of the scopiest hunters that I’ve ever had. The fence could be 5’ and you could canter down to it slowly, and not feel like you have to leg him or tell him where to leave the ground, he just does it like no big deal. I think that is what is so appealing to the judges - he has that relaxed
look and then jumps so high over the jumps, so effortlessly.” As the inaugural USHJA International Derby Finals winner, French may have his next contender. “I’m tempted to take him back to the Derby Finals because I know he will just jump around whatever they put out there.” Wrapping up a cool, highperformance Friday, show jumping returns to the Grand Prix field with tomorrow’s $7,500 CashCall Mortgage Futurity followed by the $60,000 Grand Prix of California, presented by Equ Lifestyle Boutique.

Vista del Mar Middle School Participates in National History Day - Orange County Students from Vista del Mar Middle School were among 469 students from 34 Orange County schools who competed last weekend in the National History Day - Orange County competition. The competition required students to choose historical topics related to this year’s theme, “Leadership and Legacy in History.” The students conducted independent research using extensive primary and secondary sources, analyzed and interpreted their findings, drew conclusions about the significance of their topics in history and then created projects to present their work. A panel of volunteer judges evaluated each entry, looking for historical accuracy, use of primary sources, analysis and interpretation, balance of perspectives and a variety and breadth of types of sources. Two students from Vista del Mar, Koosha Jadbabaei and Carlie McCleary, were selected to advance to the state competition representing the Individual Documentary and Individual Performance categories respectively. Jadbabaei was selected
for her performance on “How the Leadership of Jacqueline Cochran and the WASP Helped Female Pilots Soar,” while McCleary was selected for her documentary, “Every Life is Sacred: Leadership and Legacy of Medecins San Frontieres.” From among all of the students competing in each category (historical paper, performance, documentary, exhibit and website), only two per category are chosen to advance to the state competition. “San Clemente schools have a long history of competing in History Day and have sent students to California History Day every year,” said English teacher Julia Dewees. “Students from Vista del Mar and the other middle schools in Capo Unified have also represented California in the National History Day competition over the years, as well. We are so very proud of our students this year.” Representing Vista del Mar Middle School in this year’s OC History Day were: •Koosha Jadbabaei (Documentary) - Every Life is
Sacred: Leadership and Legacy of Medecins San Frontieres. • Carlie McCleary (Performance) - How the Leadership of Jacqueline Cochran and the WASP Helped Female Pilots Soar. • Nathan Melcher, David Quach, Sophia Calkins and Emelia Bravo
(Website) - The Effect Of Hatshepsut Ruling Egypt Today And Long Ago. • Kaitlin McClure (Exhibit) Milton Bradley: The Name of the Game. • Isabelle Peloso (Performance) - Pete Seeger and the Movement of Music.

United Cerebral Palsy of OC’s Life Without Limits Gala Raises $657,000 Photos by: Jon Didier Grace and Leonard Borrmann with Allergan Honoree, David Pyott United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County (UCP-OC) set a fundraising record of $657,000 in gross proceeds at their beautiful black tie gala at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach. Kathy and Chris Dubia as well as Allergan were honored during the event. Over 400 guests showed their support of UCP-OC which provides a range of vital programs and services to more than 3,700 children - and their families- with cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, Down syndrome and developmental delays. Guests were met by child ambassadors with special needs and their families as they arrived. A lively cocktail hour and expansive silent auction followed, and once inside the elegant black and white ballroom, attendees enjoyed live music with dancing, gourmet dinner, live auction, family speakers, and heartwarming videos with UCP-OC families and awards ceremony. UCP-OC Board Chair James Corbett and CEO Deborah Levy welcomed guests and acknowledged the evening’s major sponsors including The Allergan Foundation, Argyros Family Foundation and Horowitz Group. During the awards program, Gavin Herbert, Sr. recounted Allergan’s history as a company and longtime charitable support, before introducing Event Co-chair Dana Dowers with Honoree Chris Dubia David Pyott who accepted the Corporate Impact Award. Allergan has made substantial financial contributions and provided leadership and dedicated volunteers to UCP-OC for over 20 years. Event co-chair Dana Dowers gave a moving presentation of Kathy and Chris Dubia’s friendship and their longtime support and commitment to UCP-OC. The couple – who attended with their son Brian and daughter Christine - were honored with the first-ever Legacy Award for their 25 years of dedication to the health and welfare of people with disabilities. Margo, the featured speaker, was joined on stage by her son Deen and service dog Knobby as she shared their story of moving to Orange County two years ago and their struggles of finding childcare support. Deen has a diagnosis on the autism spectrum, is completely deaf on one side and suffers from epilepsy, high anxiety and sensory integration disorder. Through UCP-OC’s Respite and Inclusive Childcare programs, Deen is getting the support he needs throughout the day and is now thriving. UCP-OC board members and business leaders Dana Dowers, D.L.D. Insurance Brokers and Matthew Maletta, Endo Pharmaceutical served as the event co-chairs. Honorary committee included David Ball, Michael Hayde, Gavin Herbert, Sr., David Horowitz, Douglas Ingram, James Mazzo, David Deen and Margo Chadwick with Pyott, Geoffrey Stack and Michael Tenerelli. Nick, Lisa and Jacoby Gonchar An elegant multi-course gourmet dinner included pan seared sea bass, Deborah Levy and service dog Knobby lobster ravioli with royal trumpet mushroom followed by a delicious main course of pan seared filet of beef with jumbo prawn brochette, potato gratin with broccolini and baby carrots. Dessert alternated between blueberry mascarpone torte, lemon crème anglaise and chocolate brownie torte with caramel drizzle. Jim Nye was the event emcee and auctioneer. The top live auction item was a BBQ dinner on the beach in Irvine Cove with Rod Carew, Dennis Kuhl and Chuck Finley which brought in $15,000. Other popular packages included a suite for a 2015-2016 Ducks game and an ultimate demo derby experience donated by Ben’s Asphalt, Inc. Musical entertainment was provided by The California Band. For more than 60 years, United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County has helped children with a wide range of disabilities to lead a Life Without Limits and achieve their full potential and inclusion into society at all levels. UCP-OC provides vital services that support more than 3,700 children and families each year to improve individual well-being from birth through early adulthood. For more information about the gala or United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County, call 949.333.6410 or visit www.ucp-oc.org/gala. Michelle Hatch with Angel’s Baseball Chairman Dennis Kuhl Page 12

Ray Parker Jr . To Make Debut Appearance at KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival & Taste of the Bash! Saddleback College Radio Station KSBR (88.5 FM) is proud to announce that Grammy Award winner Ray Parker Jr. will make his debut appearance at this year’s KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival. Parker will join more than 40 other distinguished musicians in this unique musical jam session, including fellow Grammy winners Melissa Manchester and Paul Brown, Greg Adams, Chieli Minucci, Brian Bromberg, Bill Cantos, Gregg Karukas, and the legendary Max Bennett who will be celebrating his 87th birthday. The Birthday Bash takes place on Sunday, May 24, 2015 on the Village Green of Oso Viejo Park in Mission Viejo. Gates open at 3:30 p.m..; Taste of the Bash from 3:30-5:00 p.m.; Military Appreciation Festivities at 4:30 p.m.; Music at 5:00 p.m. As always, there will be very special guests who, because of contractual obligations, cannot be announced until they step on stage. This year there will be at least eight “secret” guest artists performing. Previous surprise artists have included Joe Sample, Dave Koz, Peter White, Mindi Abair, Patti Austin, Chris Botti, Larry Carlton, Brian Culbertson, Bob James, Boney James, and Tom Scott. “At most festivals, one band takes the stage, followed by a break, and then another band, and so forth. But at the Bash, headliners leave their bands behind and play together in an all-star musical party,” according to Saddleback College Broadcast Services Director Jim Rondeau. The concert is co-sponsored by the City of Mission Viejo. This will be the 27th year of the station’s largest fundraising event, and it celebrates the 36th anniversary of jazz on KSBR (88.5 FM). The Orange County Register named the KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival and Taste of the Bash the
Best Nonprofit Gala for 2013 “Best of Orange” County and last year, the KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival and Taste of the Bash came in first runner up behind the Orange County Fair for “Best Festival” in Orange County for the OC’s Hot List. The event also includes The Taste of the Bash, which features local restaurants showing off their finest creations. The Taste is an added value so those purchasing tickets to the concert can enjoy the Taste of the Bash for no additional charge. Some of the restaurants that are confirmed include California Pizza Kitchen in Mission Viejo, Sundried Tomato in San Juan Capistrano, Slater’s 50/50 in Lake Forest, and The Melting Pot in Irvine. Among the wineries at this year’s Bash are Hamilton Oaks Vineyards in Trabuco Canyon, Giesen Estates, and Beach House Winery as well as Cismontane Beer in Rancho Santa Margarita. Tito’s Handmade Vodka will also be featured. More restaurants and wineries that will be at the Taste of the Bash can be found at www.ksbr.org. Platinum and Premium Gold VIP guests will be treated to a fine dining experience by Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen in Anaheim, Delizie Ristorante in Mission Viejo, The Ranch Sports Grill in Ladera Ranch, and Vintage Steak House in San Juan Capistrano. It’s a Grind Coffee in Mission Viejo will also be serving coffee. Ricardo’s Place and Mission Grill in San Juan Capistrano will be providing meals for the Bash All-Stars and their families in the Artist’s backstage area. The event will include a special tribute to Veterans. Saddleback College’s Veterans Memorial is the most significant tribute to veterans at any community college campus in the nation. In recognition of this event and the role that the college’s VETS (Veterans
Ray Parker Jr. Education and Transition Services) Center plays in the community, the festivities will include a color guard performance and a special musical tribute to kick off the concert. In addition, veterans and active military personnel may purchase general admission tickets for just $30 through KSBR’s Membership Services office: (949) 582-4501. New this year is the Silent Auction tent where donations from around
the world have been coming in. Items such as an African Safari, concert tickets, hotel packages, wine and more can be bid on off the web or from a smart phone. More information about the silent auction and how you can bid can be found at the station’s website at www.KSBR.org. For the first time in 27 years, all VIP tickets have sold out in advance. General Admission tickets are still available at $55 in advance and $60 at the door. GA Tickets can be purchased at www.KSBR.org, in person at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, and the Saddleback College Fine Arts Ticket Office (949) 582-4656. The concert takes place on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at Oso Viejo Park, 24932 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo. L o c a t e d i n M i s s i o n Vi e j o , Saddleback College provides quality higher education and training to the greater south Orange County community. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 or visit this Internet Web site www.ndscorp.com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 13-21526-SP-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
