Angels Win 7th Straight Josh Hamilton and Hank Conger homered as the Los Angeles Angels topped the Kansas City Royals 7-0 on Saturday for their seventh-consecutive victory. Billy Buckner (1-0) limited the Royals to just two hits over five innings for his first win since 2009. The Angels have outscored their opponents 54-18 during their longest winning streak of the young season. “It hasn’t changed the expectations at all,” manager Mike Scioscia said. “Obviously, confidence as a team builds as you start to move in the right direction. Right now these guys feel good because we’re playing the type of baseball we had hoped we would play the first month, but it didn’t appear. The current winning streak has vaulted the Angels right back into contention in the AL West. “I kind of look at that as we’re not done yet,” Conger said. “We’ve won a lot. We’ve got things rolling, but you look at the big picture. We really need to continue this momentum in order to be in the position we want to be later on down the road.” The Royals have now lost sevenstraight home games, and 15 of 19 overall.

Angels, Anaheim working toward new deal By Zack Meisel The Angels and the city of Anaheim have commenced discussions on a pact that would anchor the team to the town for the foreseeable future and perhaps also provide the club a renovated ballpark. The Angels are currently tied to the city through the 2016 season, after which the team’s lease with Angel Stadium is set to expire. “The City of Anaheim and Angels Baseball have entered into discussions relating to the current lease agreement,” Angels president John Carpino said in a statement. “These discussions, which are in the early stages, are focused on maintaining a highquality fan experience for many years to come.” Arte Moreno purchased the franchise in May 2003. Later that year, the ballpark, owned by the city, was renamed Angel Stadium of Anaheim. CUSD TRUSTEES APPOINT INSTRUCTIONAL LEADER FOR SAN CLEMENTE HIGH SCHOOL The Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees on Wednesday night appointed Michael Halt, an education veteran with 20 years of experience and colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, as the next principal for San Clemente High School. Halt is currently principal at West Tisbury School in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. During his tenure at West Tisbury, Halt was awarded the Governor’s Commendation for Achievement in 2012 and was named a pilot candidate for National Board Certification for Principals. “Having conducted a nationwide search, we have found a natural leader who will continue to lead San Clemente High School on its current trajectory of success,” Board President John M. Alpay said. “Michael Halt’s experiences as a combat officer and school administrator will serve him well as he becomes an integral part of our community. I look forward to working closely with him as he applies his knowledge, skills, and abilities to the task of propelling San Clemente’s high school to extraordinary achievements and accomplishments.” Halt succeeds George Duarte, Ed.D., who was earlier appointed to be the principal at Ladera Ranch Middle School. Duarte is a former senior non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. “I am pleased that we can appoint another proven leader with a passion for our educational mission as principal at San Clemente High School,” said Trustee Amy Hanacek, who represents parts of San Clemente. “We fully expect Mr. Halt to com-

mand a strong presence, be actively involved, and work collaboratively with students, staff, parents, and the community to make San Clemente High School an outstanding school for every student.” Halt became an active duty Marine officer in 1987. He served as a combat leader in the First Gulf War, where he earned a Combat Action Ribbon and a Navy Commendation. Since 1992, he has served in the Marine Corps Reserve. During his post-9/11 tours, he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, earning a Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. As an educator, Halt has taught history and

coached track and field at Cathedral City High School in Cathedral City, Calif. from 1993-1997, and at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School in Oak Bluffs, Mass. from 1997-2000. In 2000, he became an assistant principal at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School. He took on his current position as principal at West Tisbury School in 2004. Halt earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Southern California and master’s degrees from Chapman University and Endicott College.

Go Red For Women Luncheon Raises $400K The American Heart Association’s 2013 Orange County Go Red For Women Luncheon at The Island Hotel in Newport Beach drew 550 attendees and raised $400,000 for the fight against heart disease – the No. 1 killer of women. The sold-out event featured two-time Olympic swimmer Chloe Sutton as the Keynote Speaker. “Opportunities can present themselves at any time, but if you don’t take care of yourself and “heart your heart,” these opportunities can pass you up,” said Sutton, a Mission Viejo resident. “My wish is for all of the women, and men, in this room to heart their heart. To be brave and chase new goals and go on new exciting adventures. It’s not too late and each and every one of you is worth it.” The luncheon is held annually to bring Orange County women together to learn more about heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women, and empower them with information and tools to live heart-healthy. This year’s theme was “Heart Your Heart…You’re Worth It.” The half-day event kicked off with a health expo and silent auction featuring purses of different brands, shapes, sizes and color. UC Irvine Healthcare’s Dr. Shaista Malik hosted an educational session on preventing heart disease in women. Edwards Lifesciences shared the latest on integrative medical approaches to heart health. In addition to Sutton, the Luncheon program featured passion speaker Christine Wanamaker, wife, mother and heart attack survivor from Laguna Niguel. Culinary and lifestyle expert and sommelier Jamie Gwen, of KFWB News Talk 980’s “Food and Wine with Chef Jamie Gwen,” was the mistress of ceremonies. Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death in women, claiming the lives of 430,000 mothers, daughters, sisters and grandmothers every year. More women die of cardiovascular diseases than the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer. Go Red For Women raises awareness of heart disease in women and empowers them to take charge of their health. Funds raised at the Go Red For Women Luncheon help the American Heart Association continue its support of lifesaving heart disease and stroke research. Since 1949, the American Heart Association has invested more than $3.3 billion in research. That investment has yielded or contributed to many important discoveries, including CPR, life-extending drugs, like clot-busters; pacemakers, bypass surgery, the heart and lung machine and surgical techniques to repair heart defects. These and other advances make it possible for many to call themselves “survivors.” The Orange County Go Red For Women Luncheon is nationally sponsored by Macy’s and Merck and locally by Edwards Lifesciences, UC Irvine Healthcare, SMS Specialized Marketing Services, Abbott Medical Optics and Independence Bank. Additional supporters include Allergan Foundation; Dorsey & Whitney; Gibson, Dunn, & Crutcher LLP; Haynes and Boone LLP; Kaiser Permanente; KPMG LLP; The Leets Consortium; Navigant; O’Melveny & Myers LLP; St. Joseph Hospital Heart and Vascular Team; Paul Hastings; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP & Affiliates; Snell & Wilmer; and Standard Drywall. The media sponsors are Riviera Magazine, OC Metro and Ability Magazine. For those interested in next year’s Luncheon, or in making a donation to the fight against heart disease, visit www.OCGoRed.org or call Marissa Fortuno at (949) 885-1514. Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s solution to save women’s lives. With one out of three women still dying from heart disease, we are committed to fighting this No. 1 killer that is preventable. GoRedForWomen.org, a premier source of information and education, connects millions of women of all ages and gives them tangible resources to turn personal choices Page 12

Affordable Pet Care at Home Dogs and cats provide “parents” so much love and affection. So, it’s only natural that pet parents want to return that love by taking care of all their pet’s health and wellness needs. Fortunately, now top-ofthe-line routine care can easily be provided at home using veterinarianquality pet health products, which will help save money and possibly a trip to the vet. When shopping for pet health products, it’s important to look for products that have the same active ingredients as the leading veterinarian brands, such as the new VetTrust line from PetArmor. Taking the extra time to read the labels and compare ingredients can provide significant savings. Try This at Home Help your pet live a longer, happier life with the gift of good health. Providing basic health care and picking the right vitamins and supplements can be easy with a little know-how: Supplemental care. The diets of cats and dogs can benefit from vitamin and mineral supplements. A high-quality supplement helps support immune health. Support joint mobility. As pets get older, they may start to slow down and have trouble with stairs.

Joint health products, such as VetTrust Joint Health Chewable Tablets and Soft Chews, contain glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM for maximum cartilage support to help pets maintain a normal, active lifestyle. Time for a trim. Nail trimming is an important part of a regular dog grooming routine. Long nails often break, leading to pain and infection. Purchase nail scissors from your local pet store then gently trim the tip of your dog’s nail. Take care not to clip too far down, or you could cause bleeding, then file nails, if necessary. Brush up on Routine Care Many pet parents already provide routine care to their cats and dogs. Savvy owners know grooming is a great way to shower extra attention on pets. Using vet-quality products also helps let the caring begin. Clean up their act. Proper grooming is essential to the physical, mental and emotional well-being of both dogs and cats. Brush longhaired breeds at least twice per week. Those with shorter hair may not need to be brushed as often. Baths should be given if dirt or odor becomes noticeable. Cats usually don’t need regular bathing, unless something unusual happens, as they

tend to groom themselves. However, dogs should be bathed at least once every three months. All about the ears. Regular maintenance of the ears is essential for both cats and dogs. In fact, ear infections are the second most common veterinarian diagnosis. Products, such as an Ear Wash, clean away debris while hindering the buildup of bacteria. Medicated Ear Rinse will kill both yeast and odor-causing bacteria while gently cleaning away dirt and wax. Beware of burnt paws. Prevent burns and blisters on pet paws by avoiding walking your pet on hot

pavement or sand. If you notice irritation or redness, apply a conditioning lotion with colloidal oatmeal to moisturize and restore healthy paws. People love to spend time with their pets and caring for basic needs at home provides extra bonding time. It can also ease any pet anxiety or financial strain extra veterinary visits may cause. Of course, an annual visit to the veterinarian is recommended for a nose-to-tail checkup and vaccinations. Good care with quality at-home products can mean many more long, happy years together.

“THE MIDTOWN MEN”... FOUR SINGING SENSATIONS FROM THE ORIGINAL CAST OF “JERSEY BOYS CLOSE PACIFIC SYMPHONY’S 2012-13 POPS SEASON Proclaimed by The Calgary Sun to be “ambassadors of the ’60s,” the four stars of The Midtown Men bring their Broadway talent, top-shelf choreography and unique onstage chemistry to Pacific Symphony for the final concert of the 2012-13 Pops season, led by Principal Pops Conductor Richard Kaufman. Taking the world by storm as the original cast of the jukebox musical and Broadway hit “Jersey Boys,” the talented quartet reunites as The Midtown Men to perform favorite 1960s hits from not only The Four Seasons, but also The Beatles, Motown and more, all backed by the lush sounds of the full symphony orchestra. Tony Award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony Award-nominee J. Robert Spencer share their oldschool singing style in a one-of-akind concert experience celebrating the music that defined the ’60s. The concert takes place Thursday through Saturday, June 13-15, at 8 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Tickets are $35-$185; for more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. “It will be exciting to have these four performers on our stage after doing ‘Jersey Boys’ together on Broadway,” says Maestro Kaufman. “And having Pacific Symphony right behind them will be an amazing experience for all of us as well.” During their time in the mega-hit musical “Jersey Boys,” these four artists shared the stage for more than 1,000 performances and delighted television audiences with appearances on “Today,” “The Late Show with David Letterman” and “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve.” Since forming in 2007, The Midtown Men have reached a national audience performing coast to coast in 77 cities this season. Keeping the music of the ’60s alive and fresh, their self-titled debut album “The Midtown Men: Sixties Hits” was met with critical acclaim and garnered five-star album reviews across iTunes. Many of the songs from this hit album are performed in the evening’s concert including such iconic 1960s singles as, “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Up on the Roof” and “Time of the Season.” Other exciting highlights include “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “California Dreamin’” and “Happy Together.” “The music of the ’60s takes us back to a simpler, more innocent time,” says Kaufman. “The melodies are wonderful, and the lyrics are Page 14

all about love. It’s a chance to get away from our stress-filled world of today and have a great time listening to some of America’s most memorable songs. It’s all about fun! “In the ’60s, singers were starting to use more than just a rhythm section on their recordings,” he continues. “Strings, woodwinds, harps... these all became part of the background in some of the most memorable songs ever recorded. Having these arrangements played by Pacific Symphony will make the instrumental sounds even more vivid and wonderful.” Christian Hoff won a Tony Award for his performance as Tommy DeVito in “Jersey Boys,” as well as a Drama Desk Award, a Drama League Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination. He was named “The Master of Mimicry” by Entertainment Weekly. His voice-over accomplishments have earned him notable success including Foreword Magazine’s 2008 Audio Book of The Year, when his voicing of over 200 characters surpassed the audio book world record. As the voice of Richie Rich in the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series, his voice-over career was launched and continues today with numerous audio books, television and radio campaigns. Theatrical highlights include the roles of Frank-n-Furter in the Los Angeles production of “The Rocky Horror Show,” King Herod in the national revival tour of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Governor Hugh Dorsey in the Los Angeles revival of “Parade,” George M. Cohan in “George M!,” Will Rogers in “The Will Rogers Follies,” Huck in “Big River,” and his Broadway debut in the Tony Award and Grammy Award-winning “The Who’s Tommy.” Michael Longoria is best known for his star turn on Broadway as Frankie Valli in “Jersey Boys.” He made his Broadway debut in the smash hit musical “Hairspray” (2003 Tony Award for Best Musical), and later created the role of Joey in the original Broadway cast of “Jersey Boys” before taking over the role of Frankie Valli. This took his career to new heights beginning with a solo performance for hundreds of thousands of fans in Times Square for “Broadway on Broadway.” He went on to numerous

performances on television, including Broadway “Under the Stars: A Tribute to Harold Prince,” The U.S. Open and “America’s Got Talent” season nine finale with Susan Boyle and Shakira. His journey recently led him back to Atlantic City with feature performances in “That’s Life!” with Joe Piscopo at Caesar’s. As a singersongwriter, Longoria has shared his one-of-a-kind talent at such venues as New York City’s CB’s Gallery, Cutting Room, Joe’s Pub, The Knitting Factory and Caroline’s on Broadway. Daniel Reichard is best known for his portrayal of original Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio in the boxoffice smash “Jersey Boys,” a role he originated both on Broadway and in the La Jolla Playhouse premiere. He followed “Jersey Boys” with a critically acclaimed performance as the title character in Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide” at the New York City Opera. His talent paved the way to starring roles in New York City and beyond, including his portrayal of artist/ social activist Keith Haring in “Radiant Baby” at Joe Papp’s Public Theater; “Man in The Thing About Men”; and Emmet in the world premiere of the musical version of Jim Henson’s “Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas” at the Goodspeed Opera House. As a concert singer, Reichard has had sold-out engagements at New York City’s Joe’s Pub, Metropolitan Room and Ars Nova. Other concert appearances include Symphony Space, The Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, BB Kings, Town Hall, Firebird and the Cutting Room. He can be seen as Frankie in the 2009 film version of the hit musical comedy “Forever Plaid.” J. Robert Spencer is a Tony Awardnominated actor, independent film director, producer and writer. In 2004, he originated the role of Nick Massi in “Jersey Boys,” and in 2008, he originated the role of Dan Goodman in the critically acclaimed Broadway production of “Next To Normal,” and nominated for the

Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actor and for a 2008-09 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical. In 2004, Spencer appeared as a psychopathic killer in the independent feature film “Night of the Dog.” The role earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Smmash Film Festival, and the film won Audience Awards for best feature film at Palm Beach, Santa Barbara, Smmash and PBIFF film festivals. In 2005, he began his independent film company, 7 Spencer Productions, for which he produced his first feature, “Farm Girl in New York.” The film was featured on “Today” and selected for the Sacramento International Film Festival (nominated for Best Comedy and Best Actress), Big Apple, Atlanta Film, Buffalo Niagara and the Seattle True Independent film festivals. As the Pops season comes to a close, Kaufman reflects: “It’s been a great season of music and terrific performers, many who have made their Pacific Symphony Pops debut. Most of all, it’s been another season where our audiences have been able to experience the awesome talents of our orchestra. I’m sure that anyone who heard the orchestra in concert this past season is already looking forward to the coming season, and more exciting and superb performances from one of America’s great orchestras, Pacific Symphony.” The Symphony’s 2013-14 Pops season includes Michael Cavanagh singing songs of Elton John and more, Christmas with LeAnn Rimes, Valentine’s Day with Burt Bacharach, Michael McDonald, Cirque de la Symphonie and rock band America, plus “Night at the Copa” featuring guests to be announced. Subscriptions are on sale now; single tickets are available August 18. “The Midtown Men” are not a performance of or affiliated with the show ‘Jersey Boys.’”

Angels hit 4 HRs, beat Royals 5-4 Joe Blanton got some backing from the Angels’ bats and bullpen, and finally got his first win of the season. Mike Trout and Albert Pujols hit solo home runs, and Mark Trumbo hit a two-run shot to help Los Angeles beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 Thursday night. With Jered Weaver set to return to the Angels’ rotation, Blanton could have been feeling pressure after going winless in his first nine starts. “I’ve been doing it a long time, why should I feel a sense of urgency now,” Blanton said. The right-hander held the Royals to seven hits and two runs in 6 1-3 innings. Trumbo put the Angels up 5-2 in the eighth with his team-leading 11th homer before the Royals made it interesting. “I thought we showed a lot of life at the end of the game,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “We’ve got a four-game set, and their closer came in and had to throw close to 40 pitches in the first game of the set, and I thought we had a good approach. Any time you can put the tying run at second base and the winning run at first base in the ninth inning, you’ve done something, especially when you’ve been down three.” Ervin Santana (3-4), who spent 12

seasons in the Angels’ organization before being traded during the offseason to the Royals, struck out eight without a walk, but allowed five runs and eight hits - four of which were homers. Chris Iannetta hit one in the fifth. The Royals scored on ground outs by Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakas . Ernesto Frieri gave up two runs in the ninth on three hits and a walk. Perez, who had three hits, and George Kottaras hit RBI singles before Robert Coello was summoned to get the final out. He retired Alcides Escobar on a fly, to strand two runners for first big league save. “We won,” Frieri said. “That’s what matters. That’s why I’m happy.” The Royals have lost 13 of their past 18 games to fall two games be-

Angels Will Make the Playoffs

by Jed Rigney The Los Angeles Angels are about 10 games out of first place and almost as far out of a wild-card spot. Their offense has been ordinary and their pitching wishes it could be called ordinary. But I’m telling you right now, they are making the playoffs. That’s right! You heard me (with your eyes). Yes, I mean the Los Angeles Angels. Yes, I mean the 2013 playoffs. No, I am not crazy. Just sit tight and I’ll lay it all out for you. The Texas Rangers are going to win the American League West. That’s a given. Their team is so well-built that not even a mediocre manager like Ron Washington can crash that ship. But the Angels don’t have to win the division, they just need to have the fourth- or fifth-best record in the American League to make the playoffs. So far, the Angels are off to a very slow start this season -- continuing last season’s disappointing performance. They have a losing record and just really aren’t playing that well. But what we’re seeing is the Angels at their worst. The world is filled with examples of things that started off poorly and then were huge successes. The television show Seinfeld was almost cancelled a couple Page 18

times, the band U2 was once just another alternative rock band, and The Shawshank Redemption was a box-office flop. With the talent this team has in the lineup and the pitching staff, the Angels have everything they need to not only overcome their slow start, but also to push themselves to the front of the line for a playoff spot. So, here’s how this is all going to play out: Improved Offense This season, the Angels have been in the middle of the road when it comes to scoring runs. But get ready to see this team light up scoreboards like a beer-league softball team in the next few months. They are loaded with hitting talent and can easily be one of the top runproducing teams in the league. The lineup is solid all around and also happens to have three former league MVPs in Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols and Mike Trout (give it a rest, Miguel Cabrera fans, your old-timey Triple Crown bores me).

so many pitchers under-performing, they have been hemorrhaging runs and the pitching staff is at or near the bottom in almost every old-school or new-school statistical category. So, this is an easy area of improvement. Don’t get me wrong, this pitching staff is, at best, going to be in the middle of the pack. However, with a combination of some statistical regression and the return of Jered Weaver and his golden locks, it should be able to stop the bleeding. Lackluster Competition

This isn’t just about the Angels improving, but it’s also about the quality of their competition in the race for those two wild-card spots. There just aren’t that many good teams in the American League this year. Yeah, sure, I guess any one of the Cleveland Indians, Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles might also make it to the playoffs, but none of them have the Angels’ secret weapon: playing 18 games against the Houston Astros. The historically terrible Astros got put in the AL West this year and it is sure to be the gift that keeps on givImproved Pitching ing the whole year -- and for at least a couple more seasons, as well. I can This is really where the Angels only hope the AL Central teams tried have been stinking up the joint. With to lobby the Commissioner’s Office to

The San Clemente News

prove that the Astros should actually be in their division (Houston is in the Central time zone). The Oakland Athletics are also in AL West with the Angels. They have a decent team and also get to join in on beating up the Astros. But I think we all know their ride this season ends on Game 162. Historical precedent Actually, now that I think about it, I don’t even need to cite historical precedent, because: A) We’re only 50 games into the season, B) There are still over a hundred games to play, and C) A hundred games is a heck of a long time. You and I could design and build a Red Bull Flugtag flying machine in that time. Even the most casual baseball fan knows about the unpredictability of baseball and that one winning streak can turn things around for a club. Come on, we’ve all seen the movie Major League. There are many months of baseball left. Anything can happen. And, of course, I don’t know what’s going to happen exactly or what will happen in the playoffs. But I do know, for sure, the Angels will be at that dance and they’ll be ready to shake their moneymakers with the best of them.
