A SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR CASA ROMANTICA San Clemente, CA - Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens will hold its annual meeting on Thursday, June 27 at 8:30 a.m. At that time, Mike Evans, board president, will present the annual progress report for the Casa’s fiscal year which ends June 30. According to Evans, the Casa has had a very successful year. A board management steering committee of William Carson, Kay DaltonSimpkins, and Debra Wilkens was responsible for oversight of daily operations since June 2012. Karen Ahola, Director of Marketing and Programs has been the staff liaison and manager. “We owe a debt of gratitude to these individuals for leading the Casa and building a strong financial base for the organization, says Evans. “The board members’ expertise, coupled with Karen’s professional experience and longevity serving the community, made this the perfect combination to run the Casa during this interim period. Karen has been invaluable to the Casa as a staff member and advocate for 7 years, so her

historical knowledge and her ability to work seamlessly with everyone have been integral to the success of this organization not just this year, but for many. During the past 12 months the Casa has hosted 26 cultural events for the community, implemented a children’s educational program, raised $145,000 from the Toast to the Casa, and successfully increased revenues from a deficit to a surplus. In the months ahead more enriching educational programs have been scheduled through December 2013. This can all be attributed to the solid management oversight and the significant abilities and dedication of the Casa Romantica staff. Casa Romantica is truly a vital resource for the health of our community and I personally thank everyone who has contributed to its success. As I finish up my second one-year term as board president, I know that the Casa is now positively positioned to move on to the next stage as we complete our executive director search.”

Although June is national rose month, gardeners can keep their roses healthy and blooming all summer long. Through proper care and a few simple strategies both existing and new roses can continue to look their best throughout the summer months – maximizing their beauty and enjoyment for all. Water thoroughly whenever the top few inches of soil are crumbly and moist. Use soaker hoses or drip irrigation to apply the water directly to the soil where it is needed. You’ll lose less water to evaporation and reduce the risk of disease by avoiding overhead irrigation. Mulch the soil surface with shredded leaves, evergreen needles or other organic matter to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve the soil as they decompose. Keep your plants blooming and looking their best in spite of the heat, humidity and pests of summer. Immunize your plants against common environmental stresses such as heat and drought, while building their defenses against insects and diseases natural defenses with an organic plant strengthener, such as JAZ™ Rose Spray (gardeners.com). Researchers discovered when some plants are stressed they produce hundreds of molecules that help them better tolerate environmental stresses as well as insect and disease attacks. When applied to plants in the form of a plant strengthener, the treated plants improve their own defenses, much like immunizations do for us. Gardeners

will notice less damage from stress, better recovery, reduced yellow leaves, and healthier plants overall. Proper fertilization will help keep roses healthy and producing lots of flowers. A soil test is the best way to determine how much and what type of fertilizer is best for roses growing in your landscape. Check your plants throughout the season for signs of insects and disease. Early detection makes control easier. Remove insects or infested plant parts when discovered. Look for the most ecofriendly control options when intervention is needed. Enjoy your efforts and improve your roses appearance by harvesting a few rosebuds for indoor enjoyment. Prune flowering stems back to the first 5-leaflet leaf. You can prune back farther on established plants, but be sure to always leave at least two 5-leaflet leaves behind on the plant’s stem. Those gardening in cold climates should stop deadheading roses toward the end of the season. Allow the plants to develop rose hips. This helps the plants prepare for the cold weather ahead and increases hardiness. Plus, these red to orange fruits

provide winter food for birds as well as attractive winter interest in the garden. And if you don’t have roses, make this the summer you add one or more of these beauties to your landscape. 35th ANNUAL GREEK FESTIVAL BRINGS “A TASTE OF GREECE” TO ORANGE COUNTY JUNE 21-23 Orange County’s 35th annual “A Taste of Greece” festival will be held on June 21-23 at St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church (4949 Alton Parkway, between Culver Drive and Jeffrey Road, Irvine, CA 92604). More than 11,000 guests are expected to attend the three-day festival, which will feature traditional Greek cuisine, wine tasting, live music, authentic Greek dancing with lessons and boutique booths reminiscent of the Plaka, a well-known picturesque historical neighborhood of Athens. Festival hours are 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, June 21; noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 22; and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 23. Festival admission is just $3 per person with free admission on Saturday, June 22 from noon – 5 p.m. for seniors older than 65 years. Children under the age of 10 are admitted free (with parents or an adult) throughout the three-day festival. Free festival parking will also be available, with complimentary shuttle buses transporting guests from public parking sites in Irvine. Greek cuisine and hospitality will be the focal points as the festival will feature authentic recipes for traditional Greek dishes, delicious pastries and a variety of beverages, highlighted with a wine “Taverna,” offering Greek wine and beer. The traditional Greek menu will include Chicken, Lamb Chops, Greek French Fries, Gyros, Pastichio (Greek lasagna), Loucanico (Greek sausage), Spanakopita (spinach and feta pie), Dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves), Saganaki (Greek brandy-flamed cheese),

Loukoumathes (Greek doughnut holes), Greek Salad, Calamari and more. There will also be a Greek coffeehouse set up to serve Greek and American coffee drinks in a traditional Plaka setting with Greek dance lessons offered free to all. The Philoptochos, the church’s philanthropic group, will bake around the clock during the weeks leading up to the festival to prepare traditional Baklava and other exquisite pastries. “As Orange County’s largest Greek Orthodox congregation, we are delighted to host a festival that offers an opportunity for the community to experience authentic Greek dining, wine, music, dancing and entertainment,” said Father Steven Tsichlis, St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Priest. “This year’s festival, our 35th annual, will offer something for everyone with a variety of Greek-themed activities, and tours of the Church to view the beautiful

sanctuary that contains Christian artwork done in mosaic patterned after ancient prototypes that are unique in Orange County.” A family-friendly affair, the festival will be lined with boutique shops, a variety of games and a full-scale carnival. Event attendees can also enter an opportunity drawing for the chance to win one of three premiere prizes, with a Grand Prize of $3,000 and 2nd Prize of $1,200 and 3rd Prize of a 60” television. USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER . CCSG 8 Changes Command Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) Eight held a change of command ceremony while deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (IKE), June 14. Rear Adm. Michael Gilday relieved Rear Adm. Michael Manazir in front of assembled members of CSG 8, IKE, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 7, and Destroyer Squadron 28 staffs in the ship’s hangar bay. Manazir spoke briefly about his time with the Strike Group before Gilday read his orders. “I am going to miss Carrier Strike Group Eight,” Manazir said. “But, I leave feeling tremendously rewarded by the superb accomplishments of every single Sailor on this phenomenal team. They impressed me every day!” Carrier Strike Group Eight has been embarked onboard IKE since October 2011, deployed in June 2012 with a brief two-month return to homeport from December 2012 to February 2013, before deploying again to support maritime security operations and Operation Enduring Freedom. Manazir, the son of a United States Marine, entered the U.S. Naval Academy from Mission Viejo, Calif.,

and graduated in 1981. He earned his naval aviation wings in April 1983 and deployed in the F-14A in July 1984. Manazir previously commanded the Tomcatters of Fighter Squadron (VF) 31, USS Sacramento (AOE 1) and USS Nimitz (CVN 68). He assumed the responsibilities as commander of CSG 8 in October 2011. He has been selected to two-star rank. Manazir leaves to take over as director, Air Warfare (OPNAV N98) on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO). In this capacity, he will be responsible for the development, programming, and budgeting of all Naval aviation warfighting requirements. Gilday is a native of Massachusetts and a 1985 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. A surface warfare officer, his tours at sea include command of Destroyer Squadron Seven as sea combat commander for the Ronald Reagan carrier strike group. He also commanded the destroyers USS Higgins (DDG 76) and USS Benfold (DDG 65). Gilday was most recently assigned as chief of staff for Striking and Support Forces NATO in Lisbon, Portugal, which he assumed in June 2012.

Rear Adm. Michael Gilday Gilday said he is looking forward to his time as commander of CSG 8. “I can tell you that Carrier Strike Group Eight’s reputation precedes it,” Gilday said. “This team has been the most active Strike Group in the Navy for the last two years from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and into 5th Fleet. I am excited to be here.”

The Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach raised $12,000 for Laura’s House Photos by Ann Chatillon The Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach was the place to be for The 2nd Annual Wine and Dine Event, which raised $12,000 for Laura’s House, a nonprofit whose mission is to change the social beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate domestic violence, while creating a safe space in which to empower individuals and families affected by abuse. Guests dressed in “spring chic” attire including colorful cocktail dresses and casual suits and were treated to an array of gourmet delights as they mingled with other guests, perused the silent auction Wine Wall featuring more than 100 bottles of wine, tasted wine selections from more than 30 wineries from California, Argentina, France, Italy and New Zealand, and enjoyed a selection of Chocolates by Next Organics. Big Canyon Country Club Master Sommelier Steve Poe was on-hand to provide expert advice in choosing wines. Guitarist Jerry McFarland provided the evening’s entertainment. Special guests at the Wine & Dine event included a Laura’s House survivor who spoke about her experiences with domestic violence, what brought her to Laura’s House, and how through the programs and services she received, she has built a life that is free of violence for herself and her children. “We are delighted that more than 125 guests chose to join us for our 2nd annual ‘Wine & Dine’ event at Big Canyon Country Club, and we would like to thank the participating wineries for donating their wines for this event, as well as our pourers who volunteered their time to help make this event such a great success,” said Margaret Bayston, CEO and Executive Director, Laura’s House. “Proceeds from the event will be used to support our counseling, emergency shelter and outreach programs for families who are impacted by domestic violence. Where to Find the Best Beaches Along the Shores of Orange County, California

By Jim Shawt Being raised in Southern California, it was almost mandatory to become a surfer. I had an immediate attraction to the ocean because of the calming feeling I got from the salt air and the sound of the waves. In addition, I have been to almost every break from the Oregon coast to Ensenada Mexico, but I think that Orange County beaches are the best, hands down! In the 60s and 70s, the best beaches for surfing and sunbathing were in Los Angeles. But today the crowd has shifted south to Orange County, most likely due to water pollution. If you are visiting Southern California and looking for the right beach to visit, many of the locals will guide you to a crowded and not so attractive spot. This is because there are only a few spots that are not yet discovered…… well until now.

To reach surfside, drive south on Warner Ave, all the way to the beach, turn right immediately after you pass Jack-In-The-Box. Head all the way down and park when the street ends. There are many good surf spots and plenty of sand to find a good place to sunbathe. Heading south on PCH will take you to beautiful Huntington Beach. There are two good breaks in Huntington Beach. The first spot is called ‘the cliffs’, this beach can be reached by driving south on Goldenwest, then take a left on PCH (parking is available on the street). This beach is great to spend a sunny afternoon with family or friends. The other break in Huntington Beach that is worth visiting, is the Huntington Beach Pier. The pier is famous for professional surfing events and a hot spot for tourism. However, to beat the crowds, drive

The best spots are from 45th St to 54th St. I love this place because there is something going on every day. Also, the city takes good care of the sand and the water is clean. The next stop on our tour is Laguna Beach. In its infancy years, the city was regarded as an artist colony. Today Laguna Beach is famous for its eclectic beachfront stores and great restaurants. The main strip will lead you to the pier, which is very crowded in the summer, but still it’s a great beach to visit. Aliso Beach Park features sandy beaches, rocky promontories, and scenic coastal foothills. These geological features combine to form one of the most recreationally appealing areas along the entire California coast. The park consists of two sections, the beach itself and an inland area surrounded by native coastal chaparral. Aliso Creek winds its way down from the Laguna foothills

Since 1937 San Clemente has been one of the most popular beaches in California. The mile long beach stretches between the curling ocean surf and the foot of a steep bluff. Midway between Los Angeles and San Diego, the park attracts water sports enthusiasts and those seeking respite from the inland heat or an escape from nearby metropolitan areas. Orange County has a beach for everyone, from partygoers to the typical family man. Most the spots have free parking, which can be found in residential neighborhoods near the shore, i.e. avoid beaches where you have to drive through a pay booth. Well, bring a lot of sun tan lotion and have a great time!

Is Your Pet Ready for Warm Weather Fun? Before heading outdoors, make sure your pet is ready for the season. Dr. Kemba Marshall, PetSmart veterinarian and pet care expert, knows it’s important to pay extra attention to your pet when temperatures climb. “Pet parents can make sure their pets stay comfortable, happy and healthy by preparing for the day ahead,” says Dr. Marshall. She suggests these tips for pet parents looking to include their canine companions in warm-weather activities. Keep pets groomed. A winter indoors often leaves pets with dry skin, tangled fur and a thick undercoat, which begins to shed when the weather warms. Take your dog to a professional grooming salon, like those found in PetSmart stores, to help keep them cool with services like a bath, brush or hair cut to remove loose hair. Have their skin and coat moisturized with a soothing conditioner and their nails trimmed. After grooming, brush your dog frequently and trim nails regularly to keep them clean and minimize dirt and debris collected from playing outdoors. Keep grooming tools, such as the Martha Stewart Pets Massager Brush and nail clippers, handy by hanging them behind the back door or tucking them into a basket.

Keep pets hydrated. Pets need lots of water, especially when it’s hot. Be sure to pack extra bottles of water for your dog when heading outdoors for a long hike, walk, jog or trip to the park. “Remember, if you’re feeling hot, tired and thirsty, your pet likely feels the same way,” says Dr. Marshall. Wet food also helps pets stay hydrated, so consider adding wet food to dry kibble, along with extra water. Keep pets sheltered. While the outdoors beckon pets to play, high temperatures can be dangerous. Keep your pet indoors during the hottest part of the day to help them avoid such conditions as dehydration, heatstroke and paw injuries from overheated pavement. Consider taking your dog to an indoor play center to keep them happy, such as the Doggie Day Camp at PetSmart. They’ll spend the day interacting and exercising with other dogs and trained pet-loving professionals while you’re at work or running errands. Keep pets pest-free. Pets are susceptible to a variety of bugs and pests – especially fleas and ticks. While fleas can trigger allergies and dermatitis, ticks may carry zoonotic diseases, which can be passed to humans. lyon air museum summer vehicle exhibit Lyon Air Museum will host their summer vehicle exhibit showcasing seven iconic American Woodie automobiles. It’s only appropriate that these prime icons of American summer culture kick off their debut on the 4th of July at the museum, located on the west side of John Wayne Airport in Orange County. The Woodies Exhibit, featuring Fords and Chryslers, will carry on Lyon Air Museum’s reputation for displaying fine, vintage vehicles alongside historic aircraft. Last summer brought in seven exclusive Packards and the year before, ten impeccable classic Duesenbergs. This year’s exhibit will run through August 4, 2013. The first Woodies date back to the railroads of the early 20th century, when wagons were used to transport passengers and luggage between stations and other points. These “station wagons” utilized the forward section and chassis of a production automobile, coupled with a custom, lower cost wooden body. Although initially built for commercial use, they soon became available to the general public. Woodies were often rather attractive, but were popular mainly due to their economically sound price point, especially during the Depression years of the 1930s. Cost savings were a further factor as World War II brought on shortages of steel which was in great demand for the war effort. Post World War II saw a soaring Page 14

economy, with many Americans opting for a safer, all-metal automobile. The days of the Woodie appeared to be numbered. But what propelled the Woodie to its initial popularity resurfaced in the 1960s in a whole new culture – surfing. Woodies of the past were being sought after because they were inexpensive and had a high carrying capacity. Soon spacious Woodies were toting surfers, surf boards, food and beach party gear to the best surf spots around. The scene quickly caught on to the rest of the country through movies such as Gidget and Beach Blanket Bingo, and through music by The Beach Boys and Jan and Dean with songs like Surfin’ Safari, Surf City, and Boogie Woodie, all of which referenced the Woodie and further increased its

popularity. Today, the Woodie automobile is highly desired by car collectors, and by those who yearn to cruise the coastline in a symbol of sun, sand and surf. So throw on your flip flops and cruise on over to Lyon Air Museum to catch a bit of 20th Century pop culture. Lyon Air Museum represents the fulfillment of a dream of Maj. Gen. William Lyon, USAF (Ret), who held the position of Chief of the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1975 to 1979.
