How to Create Fabulous Wedding Invitations With Your Computer by Eisla R. Sebastian Planning a wedding can be both exciting and stressful, especially if you are trying to plan your dream wedding on a tight budget. If you are computer literate and have access to some sort of word processor or card design software, then you can save hundreds of dollars by designing and printing out your own wedding invitations. This DIY option not only provides you with affordable wedding invitations, but it also allows you to implement your own creativity into your wedding invitation designs. DIY Unique Wedding Invitation Option Number One - Printable Cards: The first option that you can use for your wedding invitations is to use your word processor or greeting card creation software to design and print out your wedding invitations. A box of 100 blank folding cards with envelopes can be purchased for about $15 in most office supply stores. The cost for printing out your cards will depend on what type of printer you have, and whether your cards are in black and white or color. If you have less than 25 guests that you are planning on inviting than printing your invitations on your home printer is fine. However, for large guest lists it is probably more cost effective to print out a master copy and have a professional printer like Kinkos print out your invitations on the cards that you bought. This will cost you about $.10 per black and white copy and $.20 per color copy, which is a bargain compared to the cost of ink cartridges. When designing your wedding invitations incorporate elements and images that are important to you as a couple. You can include a favorite photograph of the two of you, your favorite poem, or a copy of your favorite painting. To further personalize your wedding invitations you can also
personalize your stamps. There are several online companies that now offer you the opportunity to design your own stamps. You can use your engagement photo or any other graphic that is representative of your style and love. Prices for these stamps will vary depending on how many sheets you order and what vendor you use, however, they usually run between $13 and $18 per sheet of twenty $.39 stamps. DIY Unique Wedding Invitations Option Number Two - Invitation Postcards: If you want to truly create a unique wedding invitation you may want to consider sending out postcard invitations. These postcard invitations can be created by you using blank, printable postcard stock, or you can simply buy a variety of pre-printed postcards with photographs of something that is symbolic of your relationship or the location of your wedding. For example, if you are planning a Hawaiian wedding you may want to send your invitations on a Hawaiian themed postcard. The cost of pre-printed postcards will vary depending on the size and style, however, vacation style 4” by 6” postcards run about 25 cents each. If you want to design your own postcards then you will need to buy blank postcard stock which usually runs about $19 for a pack of 200 postcards. You can further personalize your invitations by using photo stamps. Photo stamps for postcards cost between $10 and
$15 for a sheet of twenty postcard stamps. DIY Unique Wedding Invitation Option Number Three - Movie Invitations: If you have access to a video-camera, DVD editing software, and a DVD burner, then you may want to consider producing a wedding invitation DVD for all of your guests. This DVD can contain video clips from your relationship, a photo montage set to music, as well as photographs and information on where the wedding will be, how to get there, and all of the other important information about your wedding. This type of invitation is not only a unique way to invite your guests, but it can also be kept as a keepsake. Blank DVDs can be bough in bundles of 1, 10, 25, and 100 at a reasonable price. To find the best prices around keep an eye open for sales, promotions, and special deals. In addition to the cost associated with the DVDs, you will also need to buy DVD mailers, and postage stamps.

Six Time Grammy-Nominated Artist Dave Koz Makes Surprise Appearance at KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival Mission Viejo, CA –Grammynominated saxophonist Dave Koz, along with six other surprise all-stars, graced the stage at the 2013 KSBR Birthday Bash Jazz Festival and Taste of the Bash. Koz, a six time Grammy-nominated contemporary jazz saxophonist surprised roughly 3,000 jazz fans gathered Sunday, May 26 on the Village Green of Oso Viejo Park in Mission Viejo. This year’s Bash was the 25th edition of what has become the largest fundraising event for Saddleback College Radio Station KSBR (88.5 FM), and it also celebrated the 35th anniversary of the station’s jazz programming. Other surprise performers included Peter White, Rick Braun, Boney James, Nick Colionne, Michael Lington, and Eric Darius. Altogether, more than 30 artists appeared at this year’s event, including guitarists Paul Brown and Chris Standring; sax players Jackiem Joyner, Jeff Kashiwa, Elan Trotman, and Grace Kelly; trumpeter Greg Adams; vocalists Spencer Day and Sara Gazarek; bass players Brian Bromberg and Max Bennett; and keyboardists Keiko Matsui and Brian Simpson. Trumpeter Tony Guerrero once again served as the event’s Music Director. “What makes the KSBR Birthday Bash unique is that many of the performers are bandleaders in their own right, but on this day, everyone plays on each other’s songs in various all-star configurations, making each Bash a once-in-a-lifetime experience for both the artists and the audience,” according to Saddleback College Director of Broadcasting Terry Wedel. The concert is co-sponsored by the City of Mission Viejo. The second annual Taste of the Bash, a wildly successful element introduced last year, featured restaurants showing off their finest creations. Guests of the event were treated to tastes from restaurants from all over Orange County. From Mission Viejo, California Pizza Kitchen, Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor, butcher/grocer The Meat House, Rubios and Einstein Bros Bagels; from the City of Orange, Acapulco Restaurant; from Laguna Niguel Bistro K and Powell’s Sweet Shoppe; from Lake Forest Slater’s 50/50; Huntington Beach’s 2nd Floor Restaurant; from San Juan Capistrano A’s Burgers and Sundried Tomato; Citrus Fresh Grill at the Renaissance Sports Club in Aliso Viejo; Something Special Catering and Southern Page 4
California Snowie from Rancho Santa Margarita, and from Ladera Ranch Casa Ranchero and Ollie and Jax Restaurants. Wineries on hand were San Juan Capistrano’s Hamilton Oaks Vineyards and Trinchero Family Estates from Napa Valley. The crowd also enjoyed beers from Hangar 24 and Cismontane. Bringing a more artistic touch to the event this year was Tom Clark, a visual artist who paints live at events across the US and a few other countries. He painted two 8’x10’ paintings from inspiration received from the music at the event. Those pieces were then donated to a silent auction to help raise money for the nonprofit radio station. Memorable musical moments of the 2013 Bash included an 8-piece all-star horn section on the opening number “Put It Where You Want It”; Tony Guerrero and Greg Vail teaming up for the song, “Land of Make Believe”, a Chuck Mangione favorite that transitioned into “America the Beautiful,” (a fitting tribute celebrating Memorial Day); Dave Koz hitting the stage with his song “Anything’s Possible” as Keiko Matsui and Brian Simpson traded off solos using the same keyboard; Paul Brown’s song “24/7” had Boney James, Dave Koz and Élan Trotman on sax and Brian Bromberg on bass; Peter White and Boney James playing an amazing

version of Burt Bacharach’s “Walk On By,” which Peter and Boney recorded years ago; Boney James had his pal Rick Braun join him along with Tony Guerrero, Keiko Matsui and others for a rousing rendition of his latest release “Batacuda”; first time Basher Eric Darius had the crowd on their feet with his “Goin’ All Out”; and the whole band came on stage to close the show with a memorable performance of James Brown’s “I Feel Good” with Aubrey Logan and Bill Cantos on vocals. The event included a special tribute to Veterans. The march of the colors was presented by the Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division Color Guard. Headquarters Battalion is the adopted unit of the City of Mission Viejo and has approximately 1600 Marines and Sailors that deploy around the world in support of our nation. The National Anthem was sung by recent NBC’s “The Voice” contestant Luke Edgemon. Platinum and Premium Gold VIP guests were treated to a fine dining experience by Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen in Anaheim, Vintage Steak House in San Juan Capistrano, Savannah Chop House in Laguna Niguel, Delizie’s Restaurante in Mission Viejo, and The Ranch Sports Grill in Ladera Ranch with desserts provided by Tommy Bahama in Newport Beach, Pinkiwi Culinary Produc-
tion and MegaLoad Chocolates. It’s a Grind Coffee in Mission Viejo served up coffee for the crowd and VIP’s. La Pan’s Catering, Ricardo’s Mexican Restaurant and Two Guys Grilling provided a culinary experience for the Bash All-Stars and their families backstage. The artists were also treated to “thank you” gift bags with items generously donated by Tommy Bahamas. Other major sponsors of the event were The City of Mission Viejo, Kaiser Permanente, Norm Reeves Acura, CLI-Worldwide (formerly Blue Moon Limo), Ainsworth Design, Ben’s Professional Electrical Services, Rancho Mission Viejo, Jim’s Music Center, Bennett Productions Unlimited, Omega Events, Cox Communications, Signs Plus, Laguna Beach Festival of Arts, Firebrand Media, Brian and Jean Thompson, Steven and Nancy Dixon and OC Buzz. Located in Mission Viejo, Saddleback College provides quality higher education and training to the greater south Orange County community. Having served more than 500,00 students since 1968, Saddleback College offers over 300 degree and certificate programs to help students reach their personal, career, and educational goals. Whether your summer plans include an exotic trip or simply enjoying sunny days with friends, it’s the perfect time to add a little fun into your beauty routine. Celebrity makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff shares her expert tips to freshen up your look. Don the Dewy Look Sheriff recommends cream products to achieve that dewy, healthy glow. A gorgeous peach cream blush will mimic the skin’s natural summer color – natural enough for a daytime look with the potential to make a statement for the evening. Get a Natural Glow Self-tanners and body glows are the perfect way to look sun-kissed without the harmful rays. To get the best results, skin must be hair-free and smooth. Sheriff’s pick is Nair
Brazilian Spa Clay Total Care Body Trio, the only 3-step depilatory system that offer professional results but at a fraction of the cost of salons. Plus it works while you shower to save time. To stay smooth even longer, try Nair wax strips for results that last up to 8 weeks. For more, visit www. NairLikeNeverBefore.com. Bring on the Color This summer, Sheriff suggests a bright eye liner to bring out the color of your eyes. To get the desired effect, apply two coats along your lower lash line with a shade that complements your eyes. For example, if your eyes are brown, purple eyeliner will make your eyes pop. Less is More Add products to your makeup kit that do double-duty in soaring sum-
mer temperatures: an SPF foundation primer will protect against sun damage and create a sleek canvas while a tinted moisturizer will create a sheer finish. For a flawless application, Sheriff suggests using a foundation brush. The Perfect Pout Red lips are on trend this summer, but finding the perfect red lipstick can be a challenge for many women. Sheriff recommends a sheer red or deep wine gloss for an easy, wearable way to get the look without going too bold. With just a few expert tips in your beauty routine, you can enjoy a renewed summertime look to last all season long. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

Solving the Great Wedding Gift Debate By Phebe Durand Let’s face it, most couples getting married today have lived on their own or as a couple for years, and often have their own established homes. Traditional wedding gifts - the faithful toaster, pots and pans, and dishes - just don’t cut it anymore, since most newly married couples already have the household items that they need. There are creative gift-giving solutions out there, but the cost of the items alone often renders the gift-giver speechless. Despite the ever-changing trends of culture, one thing doesn’t ever seem to change: Newly married couples face a dramatically smaller pocket. Online businesses have made life easier on everyone and present
a perfect solution: the honeymoon registry. Honeymoon registry services offer a solution for couples, their friends and family that creates a meaningful wedding gift which will be remembered throughout the couple’s lifetime together. The way it works is pretty simple. A couple will plan their honeymoon with the help of the registry service. The registry service then takes those plans and puts it in the form of a registry list - the exact same kind of list that you would find at a department store. Instead of containing household items, the honeymoon registry list contains pieces of a couple’s planned honeymoon. Not only can guests help pay for the big items like airfare and resort accommodations, but they can purchase romantic “gifts” like a candlelit dinner or an afternoon horseback riding. What can you think of that would be cooler than giving your newly married little sister a champagne welcome to her honeymoon hotel? This new service is something
beyond unique, it is something special that helps a couple begin their new life together in a romantic way. Traditional items like toasters and china will get old and break, but a honeymoon gift will be in the hearts, minds, and pictures of the couple throughout their lives. Before deciding on a registry service, do a little research. Not all honeymoon registry services are created equal - some travel agencies even advertise a registry service, but all that this service includes is allowing your friends and family to mail in checks towards your trip. As a couple planning your honeymoon and helping everyone with their giftgiving, you need to make sure that the service you choose will provide you and your guests with the best possible service. Ask the following questions to help you determine which honeymoon registry is right for you: *Does the company provide an itemized registry list, or do they simply ask friends and family to
contribute money? The people who love you want to purchase something meaningful for you, so letting them choose from a list of items makes the gift-giving special for them. *How does the registry handle purchases? The process needs to be accessible and easy, so it should include an array of options like acceptance of credit cards, a tollfree 800-number, and the registry list should be available on the Internet so that your friends and family can access it from wherever they are located. *Make sure that the registry sends something tangible to your friends and family, like a gift certificate and receipt. Otherwise, they will tend to feel a bit ripped off and you won’t know who to thank for what. Many couples today find honeymoon registries to be the perfect solution for their bridal registry dilemma. By taking this route, the expense of the honeymoon is eased and the frustration of finding “that perfect gift” is taken away.
DIOCESE OF ORANGE TO ORDAIN NEW TWO PRIESTS The Most Rev. Kevin W. Vann, Bishop of Orange, will ordain two men as Catholic priests at St. Columban Church in Garden Grove (10801 Stanford Ave.) on Saturday, June 8 at10:00 a.m. “These new priests are a blessing from God and a gift to our diocese. Their ministry will be vital to serving all Catholics in Orange County, particularly our Spanish speaking population,” said Bishop Vann. Catholics now comprise more than 60 percent of Orange County’s population, with Latinos making up more than one-third of this population. “It is important that we have priests that not only speak Spanish, but have grounding in Latin American culture and are able to share these gifts with our diverse population,” Bishop Vann added. The Diocese of Orange has experienced exponential growth since its creation in 1976, expanding from a little more than 300,000 Catholics to more than 1.2 million currently. This growth has presented challenges, not only in terms of infrastructure needs, but also in ensuring an adequate number of priests are available to care for the spiritual needs of the faithful. The diocese has grown from 44 parishes at its inception to 62 parishes and Catholic centers. It is of critical importance that the diocese continues to emphasize its vocation programs and form men to care for Page 6
the ever growing spiritual needs of a vibrant Church. The two men to be ordained as Catholic priests are both naturalized US citizens of Hispanic descent Ruben Ruiz from Mexico and Fredy Mancilla from Colombia. Each of these remarkable men will receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders during a solemn and elaborate ceremony steeped in tradition. “This is a very positive and hopeful time for our Diocese. We celebrate the faith and commitment of these new priests as they begin their ministry to the people of Orange County. We are blessed to have such dynamic, dedicated seminarians in service to God’s people,” said Bishop Vann. About diocese’s new priests Ruben Ruiz was born in Tijuana, Mexico and came to the United States at the age of three, the eighth of nine children. Ruben was educated at Santa Ana College and Cal State Fullerton, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. At his home parish, Immaculate Heart of Mary, Ruben served as a Lector, a Eucharistic Minister, worked with the sick and later became President of the Liturgy committee before discerning his vocation in the Priesthood. Ruben attended Saint John’s Seminary where his faith grew through the ministries of detention, hospital, and home convalescence, upon which

he reflected; “My experiences enriched my learning and helped me to better see all the areas that I may someday serve the people of God as a future priest. I give thanks to God for this great gift and look forward to serving His people.” In July of last year, Ruben was ordained a transitional deacon, serving the parishioners of St. Joseph Church in Santa Ana, preaching in both English and Spanish. Fredy O. Mancilla was born in San Gil, Santander, Colombia – the second of five siblings. Fredy was educated in the towns of Garagoa and San Gil until 1999 when he sought a deeper relationship with God following the spiritual journey of his brother (a priest with the Vicentian Fathers). Fredy joined the minor seminary of the Vincentian Fathers at the Seminario Menor la Apostólica in Santa Rosa de Cabal, Colombia. Upon completion of high school, Fredy entered the Seminario Mayor de la Medalla Milagrosa in Medellin, Colombia for the study of philosophy and later admission to the novitiate. In 2005, Fredy came to St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, CA to learn
English, and while there felt a calling for the diocesan priesthood. “After my novitiate I was totally aware of my desire to be a Roman Catholic Priest, but not in a religious order,” says Fredy. “During my experience in the United States, I realized a significant part of my vocation, which I described as “a call within the call” (as Mother Teresa once said). I am very happy about my vocation and I continuously give thanks to God for having me called to serve Him in this particular Diocese.” Fredy recently completed his theological studies at Mount Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon, and as part of his priestly formation program was assigned to St. Edward the Confessor as a pastoral intern for one year (2011-2012). For additional information about the ordination ceremony please contact: Lesa Truxaw, Director of Worship (714) 282-3042.

San Onofre, Birthplace of Southern California Beach Culture How many of us living in southern California know that Marines developed surfboards with sonar as a plan to help map Pacific atoll reefs during the invasion of the Japanese held islands in WWII? Do people who drive by the millions past Camp Pendleton on Interstate 5 know that the exit Basilone Road is named after the most decorated soldier in WWII? Ever heard of music trees? On June 23, in collaboration with the Surfing Heritage Culture Center and the California Surfing Museum, Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens will launch its 2013 Coast Culture Exhibition, San Onofre, Birthplace of Southern California Beach Culture. This fascinating exhibition will explore the rich history and significance of San Onofre; bringing to life the unique story of our local natural treasure, renowned state park and internationally acclaimed surf beach with displays of rare photographs, special surfboards, fascinating artifacts, paintings and vintage memorabilia. According to Jim Kempton, curator of the San Onofre exhibit for Casa Romantica, author of the San Onofre Yearbook, former editor of Surfer Magazine and current President of the California Surfing Museum, “Of particular interest is the significant depth and breadth of the exhibit and the connections between all of the various elements that make up
San Onfore’s history. We have endeavored to present a kind of James Michener’s Hawaii type of timeline with the geological formations, the plants and animals, then the first people, President Nixon’s giant gift of the park to San Onofre, the Camp Pendleton story and San Onofre’s rise to international surfing fame; with all of it connecting to the beach culture that evolved in southern California out of a passionate commitment to the surf lifestyle.” The exhibition will include a comprehensive section on the story of surfing at San Onofre including displays of special surfboards; lifesize photos of the sonar equipped surfboards; saddles, branding irons, and other artifacts from the Ranch period; historic photos of the original bunkhouse, cattle drives, ranch house and chapel rarely seen outside the Base; period military uniforms, helmets and ordnance from the days early days of the Base along with great photos of visiting Presidents and military maneuvers on the beach; plus Native Acjachemen artifacts and displays on San Onfre’s unique plant life, animal life and geology. San Onofre, Birthplace of Southern California Beach Culture will open with a special luau for the community on June 23, from 4 – 7 P.M. The luau, which is free and open to the public, will include the unveiling of the exhibit, fabulous food by the Hawaiian
Surf Club (nominal charge for food and drinks), live entertainment and a meet and greet with legends of the surf world. In concert with the exhibition Casa Romantica will present four evening presentations that explore the most significant and fascinating aspects of the San Onofre story. The first, San Onofre: The Making of the Park, will be held on June 27 and will be presented by Steve Long, Chief Lifeguard and later, Park Superintendent for San Clemente, San Onofre and Doheny State Beaches from 1978 to 2008. As Senior Advisor to the San Onofre (Parks) Foundation, Long is the keeper of contemporary State Park history as it relates to these “crown jewels of the south coast.” The second San Onofre presentation , The Story of Camp Pendleton, from Bunk Houses to Barracks will be held on on July 11, followed by First Footsteps of San Onofre: Native American Acjachemen
on July 24 and San Onofre: The Most Exclusive Club in the World on August 15. All evening presentations will begin at 7:00 P.M. Admission price is $10 general admission, $5 Casa Romantica members, President’s Circle Members complimentary and Students/Children, free. Call 949.498.2139 Ext 10 for reservations. Casa Romantica invites the community to view and enjoy the San Onofre, Birthplace of Southern California Beach Culture exhibition on display at Casa Romantica from June 23 through August 25. Casa Romantica is open to the public Tuesday – Thursday from 11:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. and Friday through Sunday, from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. Closed Mondays. PBS SoCal Raises $600,000 at 2013 Gala Photos by Ann Chatillon PBS SoCaL celebrated education in Southern California at its 2013 “A Lifetime of Learning” Gala; the sixth-annual gala attracted more than 400 Southern Californians to The Atlantic Aviation Hangar at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana. The event benefits the station’s PBS educational outreach in the greater LA region and honored Patricia S. Harrison, President and CEO of Corporation for Public Broadcasting; Sesame Workshop represented by CEO H. Melvin Ming; and the 2012 PBS SoCaL Community Champions. Special guest Mark L. Walberg from “Antiques Roadshow” welcomed guests to the gala that was emceed by “Real Orange” hosts Ann Pulice and Ed Arnold, and featured on-air personalities Maria Hall-Brown, Cami Dixon and Rick Reiff. Guests were entertained musically by a special appearance by the 35-member All American Boys Chorus, who performed two songs made famous by Sesame Street, followed by JT & Friends, a talented 55-member ensemble of horns, strings, woodwinds, keyboards, percussion and singers fronted by John Tu. Attendees also tapped their toes to the surprise performance by “Mel and the Mel-Adjusteds” featuring PBS SoCaL President and CEO Mel Rogers, and the Mel-Adjusteds Andy Russell, Jim Mazzo, Rick Reiff and Glenn Stearns. The evening’s festivities not only featured a hosted cocktail reception, dinner, special musical performances, but also a live auction that included opportunities to bid for four unique dinner parties with iconic PBS celebrities titled “An Evening With…” PBS Newshour’s Judy Woodruff, Producer/Musician Peter Asher, Dancer/Choreographer Desmond Richardson, or Senior Executive Producer of NOVA Paula Apsell; a Corum watch and a seven-night getaway to Tallus Mammoth Lakes Private Ski and Golf Residence Club. The live auction was followed by a Fund-The-Need campaign supporting PBS SoCaL’s education goals, which was introduced by Jamie Annunzio Myers, PBS SoCaL Vice President of Education Services and Community Engagement. PBS SoCaL made close to its goal of $600,000 for the Gala, benefiting PBS SoCaL Education, which is focused on making the station the leading educational force in homes throughout the Southern California area. The 2013 PBS SoCaL “A Lifetime of Learning” Gala, organized by a gala committee co-chaired by Peggy Goldwater Clay and Ardelle St.George, would not have been possible without the support of Premier sponsors: Marybelle & S. Paul Musco and Mary & John Tu, and Platinum sponsors: Argyros Family Foundation, Emulex Corporation and Phil & Mary Lyons. Among the honorees, Sesame Workshop is the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street and so much more. Sesame Workshop’s mission is to use the educational power of media to help children everywhere reach their highest potential. Their work promotes learning with real, measurable results, a fact born out by numerous studies and sustained through a research-intensive process. It began as a simple yet revolutionary idea in the United States: to teach kids through television. 40 years later, it is a worldwide educational phenomenon, teaching millions of children in more than 150 countries. At the helm of CPB, Patricia S. Harrison pilots an organization that is the leading grantor of funds for public radio and television in America. Under her leadership, Harrison has strengthened public service media through the strategic focus of CPB. Harrison created “American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen,” a nationwide public media initiative to help communities across the country identify and implement solutions to the high school dropout crisis. The 2012 PBS SoCaL “Community Champions” recognized at the gala are those individuals and organizations that make an extraordinary impact on the lives of others through their everyday efforts, within the station’s diverse Southern California communities. The 2012 honorees included: Maynard Brown, Crenshaw High School teacher, Los Angeles County; Rueben Martinez, Chapman University and Libreria Martinez Books and Art Gallery, Orange County; Centro Latino for Literacy, Los Angeles County; Heal the Bay, Los Angeles County; Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles County; Junior Achievement of Southern California, Los Angeles County; School on Wheels, Los Angeles County; Vital Link, Orange County; Women’s Leadership Council Arrowhead United Way, Inland Empire; YMCA of Greater Long Page 12

Keep the Guests in Mind When Planning Your Wedding by Joanne Faries There are two kinds of people in this world - those who dream of their wedding day and have it planned thoroughly, and those who seek advice on the internet and cobble a wedding together. For those folks who are winging it, I have sage advice for you. When you are thinking about writing those wedding vows, the first one to write is, “I vow to not torture my wedding guests with a long boring service, and I vow to serve wedding cake promptly.” This article will guide you through the ins and outs of designing a wedding with your wedding guests in mind. I have been to plenty of weddings, and unfortunately I am coming off of a truly mind-boggling boring affair. So, take heed and avoid a wedding that is not to remember. It might seem selfish to be guiding you to plan the wedding based on your guest’s requests. However, if you wanted the wedding to be truly yours alone, you would elope and leave us poor souls out of it. So, if you or your parents want this to be show time, then plan accordingly. Keep in mind that your guests wish you well, but they are coming for the free meal. With that in mind, make the service short and sweet. Or, make the service optional and give the time on the invitation for the actual start of the reception - not the fake “ reception immediately following the service”. There’s picture taking and all sorts of rigamarole that factors into the word “immediately”. Let’s pin down a time folks. Be considerate on timing your wedding. An evening wedding that does not begin until seven thirty means dinner is not being served until nine thirty at night. That is ridiculous. The poor waiters with hors d’oeuvres trays will be attacked by hordes of hungry wedding guests, especially if there appears to be only three trays circulating for two hundred people. What are you thinking? If you plan to serve dinner, have the wedding at four in the afternoon, appetizers at five, and then start the meal by six o’clock. If you are doing lunch, then have the wedding at eleven, appetizers by noon, and grub on the table by one in the afternoon. Now, back to the actual wedding service itself. First, if you are having all of your friends in the wedding party in full gown and tux regalia, then the ushers should also wear tuxes and actually haul people to their seats. I witnessed a lot of milling about in the church lobby, and ushers in street clothes standing around. No one was asking if you wanted to sit on the bride side or the groom side. It was chaos. If you are having a traditional wedding, then stick with the traditions that people
expect. Once people are seated and the service begins, try to avoid too many readings from your bridal party. Having someone clomp in heels from one end of the church to the other, to come up and stumble over some scripture is excruciatingly boring for your audience. You quickly lose your guests interest. We want to hear the “I do, I do” and “You may kiss the bride”. If you have come this far in the wedding plan, then stick with tradition. You are now a Mr. And Mrs., and you and your family and bridal party should be in line to greet your wedding guests. I was amazed that this did not occur at this last wedding I attended. Grandparents were not introduced. Our family (this was a nephew getting married) did not meet the bride’s parents. It was very odd. The bride and groom went back into the church for pictures and the guests were left to stand around. There was no rice or birdseed thrown as the couple leaped into a limousine. There was no limousine. Again, if you are planning a formal wedding and blowing plenty of dollars, then rent a limousine, for goodness sakes. Once again, it is time to discuss the reception. Hopefully, you have settled on a proper time and your guests are not fainting from hunger. If you have planned this much, then go ahead and make the effort to create a seating plan. You should have the bridal party at the head of the room at one table. Again, I witnessed no organization at this last wedding. If there is a buffet line, the wedding party should be first to go through it. Again, I was amazed to see the maid of honor at the back of the line. I have no food ideas for you. Food is very subjective and can be very expensive. Use your own judgment based on the amount of people you are feeding. You cannot please everyone, so be sure to choose food you and your new spouse like to eat. In regards to beverages, have water glasses and pitchers on the table. Otherwise, having sodas,
beer, and wine available is a nice touch, along with a cash bar option. The alcohol factor is expensive and again subject to one’s family situation and other social issues. That is your call entirely. Speeches and toasts should follow the meal and be kept to a minimum. Then before any music begins, there should be the cake cutting. The wedding cake is part of the grand finale. Spare no expense, and frankly I love the tradition in the South to have a groom’s cake along with the regular wedding cake. Two cakes is a brilliant idea. When you plan your wedding, go to a lot of bakeries and act thorough in your cake selection. The final test of a successful wedding is the cake. This seems shallow, and yet I write the truth. A delicious cake can make up for the tedious service, the endless waiting, and any disorganization. Your guests, in a sugar stupor, will declare your wedding the loveliest they have ever attended. The wedding I have chronicled in this article as the recipe for disaster did not present cake by eleven thirty at night. Our group left grumbling and I have no idea when cake was served. It looked pretty enough, but we did not leave in a cake glow. Reception music is your choice, again due to expense. A deejay, a band, or karaoke can fill the bill. You cannot please all of your guests on music, so pick what you like and be sure to have a dollar dance to help recoup expenses. Finally, a little wedding souvenir is a nice touch for your guests. A CD mix, candy, a small packet of coffee - I have seen a variety of guest gifts and it is a thoughtful way to thank your guests for sharing in your special day. There are a lot of decisions to be made for a wedding, and I have seen success from weddings planned in a month, to disaster from one planned for a year (I’m still not over not getting cake before midnight!). In the glow of getting married, be sure to keep your guests in mind when planning YOUR special day.

Wedding Guestbook Ideas By J.C. Meeker Many couples these days are opting to do something a little more creative for their wedding guestbook. Instead of the traditional lined paper guestbook that people sign there names in, guests are asked to sign there names on something a little more unique. Check out these 37 cool wedding guestbook ideas. I have created a Pinterest board to help you visualize the idea and see how other people have brought these ideas to life. A Polaroid message guestbook would be a lot of fun for the guests to interact with. Frame a large blackboard and ask your guests to take a Polaroid photo of them and post the photo to the board and write a message. Ask your guests to write a message on a piece of paper and roll it up and place in a bottle. This message in a bottle guestbook would be great for a beach or nautical themed wedding. It would also make a great conversation piece for your home. A birthday calendar guestbook serves as a dual purpose. Ask your guests to sign their name to the date of their birth on the calendar. This also lets the couple know when everyone’s birthdays are and they can send a nice card to their guests on their birthday with an additional thank you for being a part of their lives. Ask your guests to sign some nice stones and keep them in a jar as an artistic display in the couples home or us them in a rock garden. Having your guests sign Christmas ornaments is a festive addition to a Christmas or winter wedding. These ornaments will be used to decorate the couples’s tree as they celebrate their first Christmas together as a married couple. Guests could sign large Champaign bottles and the happy couple could crack a bottle open on their upcoming anniversaries. What would even be nicer is to save the Champaign bottles for a milestone like their 10-year anniversary and share these bottles with some of the guests that originally signed them at their 10-anniversary party. Large monogram letters would make a great guestbook that could be hung in the couples home as a piece of art for one of their rooms. Plates are another idea that could be signed by guests and hung as an artistic display in their home. Paper butterflies punched out of paper can be signed and framed to make a really pretty piece of artwork. Be creative with the type of paper you use. I would highly recommend using scrapbook paper because the papers are typically treated so they do not fade. However, if you want to use something Page 14
like old sheet music you can purchase a can of archival spray that you can spray your papers with so that they will last for years to come. Also be creative with the shape. You do not have to use a butterflies, any shape that would look great framed in your home would be perfect. Guests could take photos of them with a Polaroid camera and place them in an already made scrapbook with a message to the happy couple. This is really awesome because at the end of the day you have a completed Polaroid photo scrapbook and the bride and groom didn’t have to do a thing to it. Keep the cover blank and later add a photo of the couple in their wedding attire or the wedding party or you could use an engagement photo as the cover. Advise cards are fun for the guests to fill out as an alternative to a guestbook. These cards could be stored in a wide variety of boxes and containers. The advice could be serious or funny. A nice way for each guest to give the bride and groom a personal message. Balloon picture is another really fun idea. A framed photo of a bride and groom holding a large number of balloons in which each guest will sign. Makes for a great piece to hang in their home. Asking your guests to sign quilting squares or completed quilt is a really unique idea. This quilt would look great in the new couples home. A globe that the guests could sign is another piece that would look great in a den or man cave. For those jet-setting couples this could be a fun addition to a travel themed wedding. Wine corks signed by guests are a
The San Clemente News
creative idea that could be stored in a really beautiful glass jar. Could be beautifully displayed in a Tuscan themed kitchen or a rustic room. A guestbook tree is a cute idea where guests hang cards they sign with messages on them. Large engagement or wedding photo would be a beautiful piece to have your guests sign and could be hung in a great room or family room of the couples home. Having an engagement scrapbook made with lots of extra room for signatures and messages would be another awesome guestbook idea. Wine bottles signed by guests can be set aside to be cracked open on the couples 1st, 5th, 10th, etc. anniversary. A monogrammed canvas board would be another awesome piece guests could sign and could later hang in the couples’ home. Guests could sign ceramic tiles that could be used in the home on walls, decorative pieces or furniture. I loved this peacock picture I saw on Pinterest where the guests sign the feathers of the bird. It would be really beautiful for a peacock themed wedding. A video guestbook is really fun for the guests and the bride and groom. This is fun for the couple to actually see their guests give them a message. Something they will cherish forever! A piece of art on canvas that might go with the theme of a room in their home would be a nice piece to have everyone sign. A guest blog is another fun high-tech idea. A computer can be set up for the
guests to jump on and leave a message. The fun part about this is that everyone can check out the blog and see what other wrote! Postcards signed by guests are a great idea for those designation weddings. Purchase post cards that have photos of area attractions and landmarks of the place the wedding is held. Ask guests to sign them with a message or advice. This would also be a nice idea for those couples that plan or would like to travel together. You could have postcards of places the couple has been or would like to visit together. These photo postcards would look beautiful compiled in a scrapbook. Another unique idea is to have a large butcher block, bar or counter top signed by guests to be installed in the couples home. A blank journal book would be a really nice idea for those that would like their guests to leave them messages and advice. This would look great as a personal coffee table book for the couple. Vinyl records are becoming more and more like a pieces of art. Ask guests to sign records and hang them in an artistic way on a wall of the couples home. Great for those couples with a passion for music. Having guests sign a guitar is a really cool idea. This could be displayed on a wall or nestled in the corner of a home. Large wooden music notes (monogrammed letters or letters the spell out a word) signed by guests would make a cool wall accent for any room.

What to wear to a wedding by Rebecca Black Surprisingly, the most asked question I receive as an etiquette consultant is: what do I wear to a wedding? In theory, discerning the formality of a wedding should be easy when we know the formality of the invitation, chosen venue, and time of day of the wedding. In reality, even knowing the particulars, may not quell our confusion. As an example of just how confusing decoding the dress code can be, let us look at the following common scenario. A couple chooses to create their wedding invitations, which appear rather informal. Yet, the ceremony will take place in the afternoon in a Catholic Church, with the reception scheduled for 5:30 pm at a country club. While interpreting these formality clues, we find a mixed bag. The invitation is informal indicating informal attire. A Catholic Church wedding dictates formal daytime attire; and the dress code for evening country club events is typically cocktail attire. Since there are conflicting messages here, we use an educated guess and ignore the informality of the invitation. Thus, the advice would be for wedding guests to wear conservative -- not too much skin -- cocktail attire. This calls for a suit for men and the little black dress or its equivalent for women. Answers to common wedding attire questions.
Question: Is it appropriate for a woman to wear black to a daytime wedding? Answer: Absolutely! There was a time when wearing black to a wedding was a two-fold faux pas, as it could appear the guest thought poorly of the union and black attire symbolized mourning. Thankfully, this is not the case today. Black is a popular color choice. In fact, wearing red is the only taboo color for wedding guests. Question: May I wear a formal dress with sequins for daytime wedding? Answer: Unfortunately, sequins and beaded gowns are formal evening attire. Most likely, unless this is a very formal wedding/reception, guest attire would be daytime appropriate cocktail attire. Question: I found the perfect blue strapless gown for my best friend’s wedding. Would this be appropriate for a semi-formal evening wedding? Answer: If you would still like to be friends after the wedding, then it is best to save the strapless gown for another occasion. Strapless gowns tend to draw the eye, especially if you are lucky enough to be well

endowed. It is best to shop for a more conservative dress. Question: Is it more appropriate to wear a suit for a daytime church wedding or can I wear a sport coat and slacks? Answer: It depends. If the wedding were held in a Catholic Church, which is typically more formal, then you would wear a suit. Additionally, if the invitation states “Formal Attire”, you would wear a suit. Other than that, you could wear your sport coat and slacks. Question: The wedding is very formal with a reception following at 5 pm. May I wear my tuxedo? Answer: Strict etiquette rules state that a tuxedo is formal attire worn

after 6 pm. However, most do not know this rule. There is some wiggle room since the reception begins at 5 pm--only an hour early. Alternately, this also means that the wedding probably begins around 4 pm, which is much too early. So, follow your gut feeling. If you feel that there will be other guests wearing tuxedos, you should not feel too out of place. Question: My legs are very white. May I wear nylons with strappy sandals? Answer: Wearing nylons with opentoe shoes is considered a fashion faux pas. I suggest either wearing closed- toe shoes or splurging on a spray tan.

25 Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding By L. V. Paganini The “average” US wedding costs between $26,000 - $30,000 dollars and many cost far more than that. There are always ways to save a little money here and there when planning a wedding. These small amounts can add up to a big savings overall. Best of all, by saving money in one area, you can splurge in another area more important to you. Here are 25 tips to help you save some money 1. Consider hiring a wedding planner. You can often save money because she will know the best vendors and venues. If it’s someone she’s worked with often, they may offer you a lower price. 2. Always make the final decision on your vendor, cake, dress, etc., yourself. That way you can keep track of your expenses and your budget. 3. Keep a running total of your expenses. Organize them by deposits paid, payments made and when additional and final payments are due. By doing this, there won’t be any unpleasant surprises. 4. Do you have any family members and/or friends who would be willing to handle certain tasks - make flower arrangements or bouquets, make favors, act as your “day of” co-coordinator, etc. (Just make sure the person(s) chosen isn’t a bridal party member, is very responsible, and be very sure the “day of” person is very, very organized. 5. Ask each vendor, if that offer is the best they can do. If not, is there anything they can add at no additional cost? 6. Serve a signature drink, (punch, favorite cocktail) instead of a full bar. 7. Serve beer, wine and soft drinks instead of a full bar. 8. Have a short cocktail hour. You’ll save on both appetizers and drinks. 9. See if you can buy your own wine. You’ll pay a corkage fee (per bottle) but this usually saves
you money. (Check the figures both ways, so you’ll know if this saves money or not.) 10. Check wine (and liquor) prices with discount liquor stores before buying your wine and check the prices in various cities. (For my father’s 90th birthday party, the white wine we chose was $1.50 per bottle cheaper in my city than where my parents lived.) Once you select a wine, ask the store if it will be going on sale before the wedding. 11. Most liquor stores offer a 10 percent discount when you buy by the case. Sometimes they will offer a larger discount if several cases are purchased all at once. 12. Do a taste test on wine that’s available in magnums (double the size of regular bottle). It costs less per ounce, and the corkage fee will go twice as far. 13. Ask your liquor store to allow you to return unopened bottles of wine (and liquor). Most stores will do this. 14. Have just one glass of champagne served only when it’s time for the toast(s). 15. Try to use local produce that is in season. You’ll save money and it will taste and look better. 16. If your wedding venue/caterer allows it, get an outside bakery to provide your wedding cake. Shop around and do some taste tests - you’ll usually be able to get it at a lower cost that having your caterer make it. (Again, check the figures both ways, so you’ll know if this saves money or not.) 17. Order a small fancy cake to be displayed and for the cake cutting, plus a sheet cake (or, as many as necessary). The sheet cake(s) can be made in many flavors, but will be decorated with just icing and will be less expensive. (Since it’s served from the kitchen, your guests will never see the sheet cake(s). 18. I you want a large cake, have your baker make only the amount necessary. The additional

tiers can be made of cardboard and iced to match the others. 19. Talk to your florist about using flowers that are in season. 20. One candle inside of a hurricane lamp makes an elegant centerpiece instead of a more costly flower arrangement. 21. Consider purchasing some of the flowers at Costco - to go around the cake, etc. 22. Use some silk or dry florals and lots of ribbon mixed in with the real flowers to save money on the arrangements. You can also include pinecones and berries during certain seasons. 23. Place the bridesmaids’ bouquets on the cake table instead of using other flowers to decorate this table. 24. A wedding held early in the day will mean a less expensive reception. Breakfasts, brunches, luncheons and teas are the least expensive meals to provide. You’ll also save money on drinks because people will drink less earlier in the day. 25. Consider the date of your wedding - if you can book your venue during the off-season, you’ll usually save some money. Happy Wedding Planning!

Five Beautiful Wedding Gowns for Summer 2013 By Mary Thatcher The upcoming summer 2013 season can be summed up in one brief phrase to describe wedding dresses: sheer elegance. From lace to embroidery and beadwork, not to mention detailed pleats and ruffles, these dresses are meant to last for and be worn by several generations of brides in a family. What is really unique here are the different styles of skirts, from A-line to full and mermaid tail. So there is quite a variety to choose from, and the colors here range from basic white to ivory and off white. Here are the five most beautiful wedding gowns for the summer 2013 season: The lacy high neckline and mermaid tail is what makes this Oscar de la Renta wedding dress really stand out. The floral decoration in the lace literally cascades down the body in this silhouette lined dress, with a
white satin underlay. This is the kind of bridal dress that any bride will want to wear in an outdoor setting, such as a garden or beach wedding. Price available upon request through Oscardelarenta.com. Oleg Cassini has long been known for designing garments with classic lines for women the world over. This Cassini wedding gown has a full ball gown skirt made from white organza, a bodice with exquisite beaded embroidery, and a chapel style train. For the bride who dreams of having an elegant wedding, this is the gown to purchase. Available from David’s Bridal for $850.00. Now here is a wedding dress that is sweet and delicate without being too frilly or elaborate. Designed by Rivini, this design is called Collette and is made from silk Peau d’Ange and tulle. The architectural lines of this dress will make a petite bride ap-
pear statuesque. The bodice top is ruched, and the striking contrast here is the beaded belt. More information and price can be requested through Rivini.com. This wedding dress, from the Claudine Bridal by Alyce collection, is showy enough to please a peacock. The skirt is made of tightly ruffled taffeta, while the bodice has a Vcut at the neck, complete with a back zipper. It’s
the beading and fabric draping in the bodice that makes it look very elegant and ornate. Any bride who dreams of a fairy tale wedding will want to wear this gown for a summer 2013 wedding. Available from Net Fashion
